By looking at me, you wouldn’t think that anything in particular was wrong, but that wouldn’t be altogether true. My name is Holly and I am looking for a kidney donor. I have lived in the Denver metro area for the majority of my life. My husband and I currently live in Centennial with our three fur-babies. I have two grown children and 2 grandchildren. For the past 20 years, I have worked for the Parker Police Department as a civilian employee. I am currently assigned to the Property and Evidence Section, but have worked in many areas of the Police Department. I have also taught various classes and trainings, and worked on many events for the department over the years. Prior to that, I worked as a Patrol Officer for approximately 18 years in other police agencies in the Denver Metro area.

led a very active lifestyle.

In my spare time, I teach dance classes (mainly ballet) at four locations in the Denver area. I love working with all of the children, and I am honored to have the opportunity to help to change so many young lives. As you can see, I have always

About 5 years ago, I became extremely ill, and the doctors had a difficult time figuring out exactly what the problem was. After a litany of tests, it was determined that I was in kidney failure. The cause is believed to be high blood pressure, which I had never had before that time. There is also the possibility that genetics are involved as my grandfather, aunt, uncle and mother sadly all passed away due to kidney failure. Ironically, back in the 1960’s, my mother was scheduled to be a kidney donor for my uncle in one of the Denver’s first kidney transplants. My uncle sadly passed away before this could happen. In cases such as mine, the best course of action is a kidney transplant. Many people generously donate their organs upon their passing, and many lives are saved in this way; however, the waitlist for a kidney transplant by this means is often 4-5 years because the need is so great! There are currently many living kidney donors who live active and healthy lives after a transplant with one remaining kidney. By donating a kidney to someone in need, you are saving another person’s life. Kidney donors are matched with their recipient, first by blood type, and then by a tissue match, to make sure the new kidney isn’t rejected. In my case, I am an “A” blood type, which means I can be matched with another “A” blood type or the universal “O” blood type. I am hopeful that my donor is out there and, perhaps that by reading this, I will be lucky enough to find my personal donor hero. However the lists are long and every name on them is in need. I am desperately hoping that each and every person reading this will consider being a donor and becoming a hero for someone waiting patiently for the news that could save their life. Southlands Farmers Market

One of the best things about summer is all the fresh produce you can get your hands on at the store. The only thing better than bringing home sun ripened tomatoes and berries bursting with sweetness from the store is bringing it home straight from local growers at the yearly Southlands Farmer’s Market. Get out and enjoy the sunshine, watch the kids hop through the splash pad, spend some time strolling through the market and go home with your bags filled with all the vibrant colors of summer. Shoppers from past years’ markets could select not just from the farm fresh produce, but also from Colorado wines, mouth watering, fresh baked breads, grass fed local beef, locally made salsas and green chilis, just to name a few, as well as unique handmade and hand crafted items created and sold by local artisans. It’s one stop shopping! Beginning May 19th, the Farmer’s Market will be open Saturdays from 8:00am-1:00pm in Town Square at Southlands throughout the summer until Saturday, September 29th. If you

Things just got a little more wild at the Aurora Reservoir!

The city of Aurora invites you to visit the new Senac Creek Nature Center at the Aurora Reservoir. Just last month, the Senac Nature Center celebrated its grand opening and, with summer right around the corner, the center is eager to welcome lots of new and returning visitors through its doors. The completely redesigned nature center (formerly the AWQUA Lounge) boasts a stunning photography display, interactive exhibits, electronic games, hand-made puzzles, animal costumes and more! “The Senac Creek Nature Center is a beautiful, modern facility that will provide educational fun for families from Aurora and beyond,” said Tom Barrett, director of the city’s Parks, Recreation and Open Space Department. “Our naturalists have created a truly unique space that is like no other throughout the Aurora-Denver metro-area.” Visitors of all ages will learn about four ecosystems in Aurora, food chains and the importance of water to our natural and human communities through interactive exhibits and games. School programming available through the Nature Center includes topics such as Ecosystems and Habitats, Insects and Other Arthropods, Aurora Birds and Plants and even Ancient Aurora. Programming for Scout troops as well as a variety of other community programming will continue to be offered throughout the year. A current list of upcoming programs and online registration can be found at AuroraGov.org/Nature. Entrance to the Senac Nature Center is included with your admission to the Aurora Reservoir. Visitors can also experience a wide variety of recreational opportunities available at the reservoir like monkeying around on the playground, nature viewing, casting a line fishing, bike riding and walking along the local trail. Once the summer season is in full swing, you can also enjoy swimming, kayaking and stand-up paddle-boarding in the reservoir’s waters. The Senac Creek Nature Center will be open Wednesday through Friday, from noon to 4:30 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Admission to the nature center and reservoir property is free if you are visiting the nature center only, and just $10 per day, per vehicle when enjoying other reservoir amenities. Dalton’s Moon Foundation

When you watch someone do something extremely difficult with an ease and grace that makes the impossible look effortless, it’s inspiring. Inspiring others is something Dalton Levine did throughout his lifetime through his amazing dance and orchestra performances, his impressive academic achievements and his eternally optimistic and inspiring way he lived his life while fighting a very rare and aggressive form of cancer, adrenocortical carcinoma (ACC). Diagnosed in high school, Dalton’s resolve never faltered. He remained positive and determined to fight this disease and get better, all while keeping his sense of humor and comforting younger cancer patients fighting the same fight. A warrior to the end, Dalton sadly passed away on December 13th, 2016. Following Dalton’s example of relentless positivity, humanity and kindness; his family was inspired to create the Dalton’s Moon Foundation in his memory. The continual mission of the foundation is to raise funds to empower armies of doctors, nurses, clinicians, scientists and support staff in our hospitals to get the resources they need in order to make cancer a thing of the past. Their dream is that the Dalton’s Moon Foundation will make the dream of “no more cancer” a reality. With these goals in mind, Dalton’s family and friends invite the community to join them in the 2nd Annual Dalton’s Moon Foundation Golf Tournament on Friday, June 15th, at the Spring Valley Golf Club. Funds raised from the tournament, as well as an online auction that will be live from June 8th-15th, will benefit Dancers

Against Cancer, Children’s Hospital Colorado, Children’s Tumor Foundation, and several more deserving causes to be determined. Before his passing, Dalton had participated in Colorado School of Dance’s “Dance for a Difference” show, a fundraiser for Children’s Hospital Colorado, since its inception. To date, this annual benefit has raised well over $100,000 for the hospital. He was also very proud to be chosen as an ambassador for Children’s Hospital in 2016. He represented the hospital at multiple events and supported numerous fundraising initiatives.

graduating from LHS with honors, on time, with a better than 4.0 grade point average and in the top 3% of his class. Dalton had plans to attend University of Colorado - Boulder as a Computer Science major and ultimately to go to medical school and become a pediatrician.

Funds will also be used for a Legend High School College Scholarship, to be awarded to a student who exemplifies the same qualities and passion for learning and helping others that Dalton did. Despite the rigors of his intense cancer treatments during his junior and senior years, Dalton continued to excel academically,

If you were fortunate enough to see Dalton perform, you know that his love of life came through in his passion for the arts. If you never got that chance, you will no doubt be just as inspired by Dalton through the work of this amazing foundation and the legacy Dalton continues to leave. In tribute to Dalton, or perhaps for someone you know who has battle or is battling cancer, please go to www.daltonsmoon.org for more information about the online auction, to register for the Dalton’s Moon Foundation Golf Tournament or simple to contribute to the foundation and their tireless fight against pediatric cancers. Maya Angelou once said, “If you’re going to live, leave a legacy. Make a mark on the world that can’t be erased.” Dalton Levine certainly left his mark, and it’s one that will be impossible to erase. Please consider honoring his legacy by supporting the Dalton’s Moon Foundation at their event next month, and become a part of that legacy.

If you are unable to attend the event, please consider becoming a sponsor through a donation. All donations, including cash and items donated for silent auction, are tax-deductible. Please go to www.daltonsmoon.org to register for the event or to contribute.

Discovering local businesses that make our community great! One Point Wellness 6155 S. Main Street, Suite 245 in Southlands Mall Hours By Appointment Monday through Friday: 9am - 8pm, Sat: 9am - 6pm Closed Sunday (720) 717-1873 www.onepointwellness.com Sometimes, when you have a problem you don’t quite know how to solve, you theoretically “put a pin in it” and come back to it later. Chronic health problems are often too cumbersome to ignore. That is exactly what happened to Kurt Wick, L. Ac., Dipl. Ac. Dipl. C.H., MSOM. At just 29 years old, he was suffering from chronic acid reflux, migraines and general fatigue. Conventional medicine and doctor appointments gave him some minor, temporary relief with prescription medications, but he still feel well over all and was tired of feeling that way all the time. At the urging of a friend, he went to see an Acupuncturist, although he was rather skeptical of what, if any benefits he would reap from the process. After just that first visit, Kurt was astonished with the immediate results and relief he experienced. The acidic feeling in his stomach disappeared, replaced by a cool sensation he’d never experienced before. After just a few treatments, his digestive issues had improved significantly, his energy returned, and he has not had a migraine headache since I started getting acupuncture. He finally felt good again I felt good again and the results were so life changing for him, he changed his career path. This medicine worked and he wanted to help others with it.

MAY 2018 search south aurora magazine

Kurt graduated from the East West College of Natural Medicine in 2007 with a Master of Science in Oriental Medicine and a Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences. He also studied and practiced in hospitals and clinics in Hang Zhou, China. After graduating, he worked in a very busy clinic in Lakewood Ranch, FL for 2 years before founding One Point Wellness in Sarasota, FL. After 4 years of running his clinic in Sarasota, FL, he to Colorado to be cloer to his family and started his new practice here in Aurora. Kurt is a Colorado Licensed Acupuncturist and Board Certified in both Acupuncture and Chinese Herbology. While all Acupuncturists are Board Certified in Acupuncture, very few are Board Certified in Chinese Herbology. He is extremely proud that One Point Wellness has an extensive Herbal Pharmacy on-site, allowing him to help his patients by providing safe, effective, natural alternatives to many conventional therapies and pharmaceutical medicines. The term “One Point” represents balance. This reference is often seen in Qi Gong, Tai Chi, and martial arts. The One Point is also known as the Dantian or Hara. To maintain One Point is to maintain Balance. “This is what I strive to do for my patients... bring balance back to their lives.” This can mean anything from eliminating pain to regulating digestion to alleviating insomnia... and all areas in between. If you have problems that you have been “put a pin in” to deal with later, maybe thinking about ACTUALLY putting a pin in it and consider trying Acupuncture as a means to a healthier, happier life.
