ShamROCK Stampede The dangers our military and first responders face daily are more than most of us could bear, yet they do so willingly and with a bravery that is unmatched. For many, the battles they fight leave them wounded in ways that no one can see, but that those heroic first responders and veterans feel the repercussions of every day. We owe it to the men and women who put our safety and well being ahead of their own to stand with them to fight the ongoing fight to heal those with PTSD. The organizers of the very popular Turkey ROCK Trot have taken this cause, which is very close to their hearts, and created the ShamROCK Stampede 5K/10K for PTSD. The ShamROCK Stampede and ShamJam will kick off with the races. The course spreads out over the East Plum Creek Trail, including a Kid’s 1K ShamScram, the 5K and 10K Grand-Sham! The Health Expo with numerous vendors will be open all day and after the races and awards, ShamROCKers can enjoy beers from local breweries, food from local vendors and live music from local bands! Local breweries will be gifting 1 free beer per participant (over 21 years of age) with additional beer available for purchase for just $5. Prepare to have your appetite satisfied with all things Irish by offerings from local food vendors. The musical line up for this inaugural year includes Van Who-
Len, The Voice’s Biff Gore, The Wyatts, American Idol contestant Grayson Little, and Tenderfoot Bluegrass! Enjoy the Expo featuring many vendors and limited giveaways. Kiddos can get in on the fun with face painting, balloon twisting and much more! To show their appreciation and, once again thank you for your service, organizers of the ShamROCK Stampede will offer discounts for all veterans and first responders. Join the team and help create a movement in Castle Rock that will spread nationwide to change the lives of those suffering from PTSD. Together, this community can make an enormous impact right here in Castle Rock. Help elevate St. Paddy’s day weekend for this incredibly important cause. In addition to sponsorship opportunities, there are several Specialty Opportunities available, including Bib Coupons for your business, Media Sponsorships, In-Kind Sponsorships, and Expo Participant, which gives you a 10x10 space at the ShamROCK Stampede for PTSD Health and Wellness Expo, a quarter page digital swag bag ad/coupon (no link; with link, add $100) For more information or if you are interested in becoming a sponsor, at any level, go to www.shamrockstampede.com or email info@shamrockstampede.com
The mission of the ShamROCK Stampede is to elevate the celebration of St. Patrick’s Day with a family friendly Walk/Run and Irish themed festival to increase the awareness and raise funds for organizations that assist our veterans, first responders and others in order to help them break free from PTSD. All proceeds from the event will benefit Invisible Disabilities Association (www.InvisibleDisabilities.org) Not all wounds are visible, but together as a community we can make sure our support is. Spend St. Patty’s Day at Festival Park at the inaugural ShamROCK Stampede and help give back to the community of veterans and first responders who have given so much to us. WE NEED YOUR HEAD Shave the Mayor 2019
Cancer sucks. Not the most eloquent of word choices, but it’s the truth. Those battling it know it all to well and those supporting patients know they would do anything to make things just a little bit easier for their loved ones fighting the toughest fight of their lives. This is never more true than when it’s friends and family of children waging the war against pediatric cancers. These tiny warriors are some of the bravest on the battlefront. They face the same, sometimes scary, side effects of treatment as adult patients, including often losing their hair. This is where you, and your head, come in. You can become a warrior against cancer and help raise awareness and much needed funds to find a cure for this cunning and cruel disease. All you have to do is go to shavethemayor.com and click GET SHAVED button right at the top of the page to become a “shavee” at the 7th annual Shave the Mayor event for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation. After signing up, you will set a fundraising goal and get to work asking friends and family for support in your quest towards beating pedicatric cancer; Be sure to let them know, when you meet your goal you will be going bald to stand in solidarity with kids who are fighting cancer right now. Young or old, boy or girl, no matter how old you are or what you do, we can all pull together as a community of supporters to show

these incredibly brave kids that their community stands with them in this fight. Each year this event grows, as do the fundraising goals. None of it is possible without YOU getting out there with your friends and neighbors to raise funds and awareness. Funds raised each year have exceeded our goals, but breaking those records and keeping those much needed funds coming in depends on you! So, cancel any upcoming haircut appointments you have, head over to shavethemayor.com and be a part of one of the most inspiring and important events you will ever be a part of, Shave the Mayor for St. Baldrick’s. Don’t just hit the trails, be a part of the team that keeps the trails beautiful in Castle Rock! Being able to get out and enjoy the beautiful town of Castle Rock is one of the best parts of living where we do. Keeping those trails in tip top shape is a labor of love by local volunteers that would love for you to be a part of what makes Castle Rock such an amazing place to work, live and play! The Ridgeline Wranglers are a group of volunteers that help both maintain and improve the Stewart Trail at Ridgeline Open Space. The group currently consists of five trained crew leaders and approximately 40 active crew members. Crew leaders have all completed backgrounds and are cleared to work with children who wish to volunteer as well, and Town staff members lead maintenance outings. The group meets one Saturday a month at the Ridgeline Open Space trailhead, just off Coachline Road. Additional maintenance outings are scheduled as needed. Work on the trail includes de-rutting the trail and eliminating berms as well as clearing the scrub oak and other brush that may be encroaching upon 9

the trail. The volunteers also eliminate noxious weeds and implement other trail improvements. Ridgeline Wrangler volunteers receive a POST Partners t-shirt and POST water bottle and/or hat as well as an invite to the end of the season party with raffle prizes and food! Participants who are interested in becoming crew leaders will receive free crew lead training. For more information or if you have any questions about this group, email them anytime at mjones@crgov.com. Another great way to get involved with Castle Rock’s amazing outdoors is the new PSM Trail Partners. Formed in 2018, PSM Trail Partners will help maintain and improve the trails at Philip S. Miller Park. Crew leaders of PSM have also completed the background checks required and are cleared to work with children if they are ready to get in and lend a hand as well! The work on the PSM Trails entails the same duties performed by the Ridgeline Wranglers. Volunteers will meet on a weeknight once or twice a month. For those who love putting wheels to the road, so to speak, you may be interested in becoming a part of the Rhyolite Dirt Crew. For nearly a decade, the Rhyolite Dirt Crew has been helping maintain
and continually improve the bike park at Rhyolite Regional Park. In 2012, improvements were made to the bike park berms and jump line with a new mulch practice jump added at the base along with a return. Additionally, a new, 2-mile permanent cyclocross course was established as well. The following year, a new session zone with beginner, intermediate and advanced lines were constructed by Progressive Trail Design and the Dirt Crew. This last year, with new crew leader Zach Vacura, a new picnic area was added, and the session jumps were reworked to breathe new life into the course. Dirt Crew volunteers will receive a POST t-shirt and water bottle &/or hat. If you are interested in volunteering, email the Dirt Crew at mjones@crgov. com or join their Facebook page at www. facebook.com/groups/rhyolitedirtcrew Season Kick-off Meetings Ridgeline Wranglers - Wednesday, March 13th from 7-8 p.m. at The Grange PSM Trail Partners - Wednesday, March 13th from 7-8 p.m. at The Grange Rhyolite Bike Park Dirt Crew - Wednesday, April 3rd from 7-8 p.m. at the MAC For more informatoin on all Trail Maintenance Groups, go to www.crgov. com/2370/Trail-Maintenance-Groups

Something truly amazing is coming to Parker… Miss Amazing. Colorado joined Miss Amazing, Inc. two years ago with just 22 participants. In its second year, Colorado Miss Amazing more than doubled their participants to 51 last year. The hope is that this year’s event brings in even more participants. Colorado Miss Amazing may sound like another pageant; it’s so much more than another pageant. Colorado Miss Amazing provides opportunities for girls and women with disabilities to build confidence and self esteem in a very supportive environment. Miss Amazing is comprised of a community of people that invests in the strengths of girls and women with disabilities, because no matter any young women’s abilities or challenges, she can do great things. Colorado is one of 30 states across the country that host Miss Amazing events where thousands of volunteers have come forward to celebrate diversity and true girl power. To date, 1,700 girls and women have benefitted from Miss Amazing programs. Miss Amazing events provide a public platform 11

for girls and women with disabilities to define themselves on their own terms and help to dispel stereotypes. The sisterhood develops friendships and provides the opportunity for participants to test their own boundaries and take on new challenges. Colorado Miss Amazing kicks off on Friday, March 29th, at the Holiday Inn on Cottonwood Drive, which has become the Official Colorado Miss Amazing Hotel. Rehearsals and registration will be followed by orientation and then it’s time for the participants to have some serious fun all while preparing for day two’s events. The evening will end with a pajama dance party with live entertainment from Shelvis and the Roustabouts. Day Two will be held at the PACE Center and starts off with the talent showcase. After a 2 hour break for hair and makeup and a dinner for participants and their buddies, the final show will commence at 6pm. There will be incredible surprises, awards and much, much more. Over 350 people attended last year’s event, and more than 30 businesses and organizations have signed on as sponsors
for the Colorado Miss Amazing event; which stands to reason because with an event this special and inspiring, who wouldn’t want to be a part of it? In addition to the astounding things this program is doing for all the girls and women who participate, it’s allowing those same participants to give back to the community. Participants pay a small fee to be a part of Colorado Miss Amazing; 5 cans of food. To date, over 450 cans of food have been donated to local food banks by the representatives of Colorado Miss Amazing. Something this special should be shared with everyone. Whether you might be interested in this event as a participant, a volunteer, or a sponsor, it is bound to leave a lasting mark on your heart. Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail By: Cheryl Strayed
Farmers Markets: A Guide to Small Scale Business and Entrepreneurship
Wild tells the story of Cheryl, who lost her mother to cancer and then witnessed her family scatter. As she struggled with the loss of her mother and her family, her marriage ended in divorce and she was lost. She saw a book about the Pacific Crest Trail and an idea began to grow. She decided to take on this challenge alone, as she attempted to put her life back together and find herself. Although she had a love of the outdoors, she did not have the experience that would prepare her for this journey. She would hike more than a thousand miles of the Pacific Crest Trail from the Mojave Desert through California and Oregon to Washington state. PAM: Within the last few
years, this book was made into a movie, starring Reese Witherspoon. I was intrigued by the trailer, but never had the opportunity to see it. When I recently saw the book on a list of must-reads I felt drawn to the story. Becky, have you seen the movie?
BECKY: I have not seen the movie yet, but I think it would be interesting to see the scenery that was described in the book. I have heard of this trail and am amazed that someone without experience accomplished so much! I found it strange to read a book that already placed Reese in my head as the main character. Usually, it’s the other way around. We read a novel and then create our own version of the character. That threw me off a bit and I struggled to picture Reese in that role. What did you enjoy the most in this book, Cheryl’s story of her life to that point, or the process of completing the elevenhundred mile hike? PAM: I enjoyed her description of the day to day struggle to complete her hike. Honestly, I was frustrated with aspects of the story of her life before the hike and was eager to
13
see if she found healing, worth, and understanding through her challenging hike. I completely agree with you about the accomplishment of an inexperienced hiker taking on such a monumental task! Her determination to continue to fight to reach her goal was admirable. I wonder if she would have had as much drive if she was not battling so many demons from her life. Do you think this was the key to her success?
BECKY: That is an interesting question and I wonder how a book club would respond. I wouldn’t say that I viewed her as a goal driven athlete. The story would have drawn me in even more if she was. As I read, I felt like her personality didn’t line up with the physical accomplishments she was making so it was unbalanced for me. I gather that she was at the end of her rope and this was a form of therapy to help her crawl up from hitting rock bottom. She wasn’t prepared for this adventure but she needed to let go of the past and ultimately find a new life for herself. I wonder if her success was due to the fact that she wasn’t ready to return to her regular life. She continued to put one

foot in front of the other until the end. I struggled liking and understanding Cheryl. I admire that she was so honest about her past but I didn’t meld with her story nor did I have empathy for her. Did you connect with her and would you be interested to know more about how she is doing now?
PAM: I also struggled to
connect with her throughout the story. I would be interested to know more about how she is doing now. She shared some very self destructive behaviors during the recounting of her past and I would like to follow up and see if her hiking experience helped her overcome these struggles. Along the trail are small towns where a hiker can have packages sent in order to restock supplies. Do you think it would be interesting to spend some time in one of the towns and talk to the people as they hiked through?
BECKY: That would be very interesting but I honestly would rather be one of the hikers! It’s time to walk away from this story and move on to our April selection. Join us as we discuss The Red Address Book by Sofia Lundberg.
In his new book, “Farmers Markets: A Guide to Small Scale Business and Entrepreneurship”, author Bill English uses his business and counseling experience to provide a guide of helpful hints and counsel for the novice as well as the experienced Farmers Market vendor, to enable the small business man/woman to increase the opportunity to succeed. Within these pages, you will find nuggets of great information that will help you with your business venture. Some of the tenants taught are also applicable to other small business ventures. The book is meant to be a quick read, organized to help you set up a new business or improve an existing business. Those who want to expand their business beyond the single Farmers Market, will find information to encourage entrepreneurship to operate many other Farmers Market booths as well as expand into the wholesale arenas selling to local, regional, state, and national outlets.
