Help Holly Find A Kidney
By looking at me, you wouldn’t think that anything in particular was wrong, but that wouldn’t be altogether true. My name is Holly and I am looking for a kidney donor.
I have lived in the Denver metro area for the majority of my life. My husband and I currently live in Centennial with our three fur-babies. I have two grown children and 2 grandchildren. For the past 20 years, I have worked for the Parker Police Department as a civilian employee. I am currently assigned to the Property and Evidence Section, but have worked in many areas of the Police Department. I have also taught various classes and trainings, and worked on many events for the department over the years. Prior to that, I worked as a Patrol Officer for approximately 18 years in other police agencies in the Denver Metro area. In my spare time, I teach dance classes (mainly ballet) at four locations in the Denver area. I love working with all of the children, and I am honored to have the opportunity to help to change so many young lives. As you can see, I have always led a very active lifestyle. About 5 years ago, I became extremely ill, and the doctors had a difficult time figuring out exactly what the problem was. After a litany of tests, it was determined that I was in kidney failure. The cause is believed to be high blood pressure, which I had never had before that time. There is also the possibility that genetics are involved as my grandfather, aunt, uncle and mother
sadly all passed away due to kidney failure. Ironically, back in the 1960’s, my mother was scheduled to be a kidney donor for my uncle in one of the Denver’s first kidney transplants. My uncle sadly passed away before this could happen. In cases such as mine, the best course of action is a kidney transplant. Many people generously donate their organs upon their passing, and many lives are saved in this way; however, the waitlist for a kidney transplant by this means is often 4-5 years because the need is so great! There are currently many living kidney donors who live active and healthy lives after a transplant with one remaining kidney. By donating a kidney to someone in need, you are saving another person’s life. Kidney donors are matched with their recipient, first by blood type, and then by a tissue match, to make sure the new kidney isn’t rejected. In my case, I am an “A” blood type, which means I can be matched with another “A” blood type or the universal “O” blood type. I am hopeful that my donor is out there and, perhaps that by reading this, I will be lucky enough to find my personal donor hero. However the lists are long and every name on them is in need. I am desperately hoping that each and every person reading this will consider being a donor and become a hero for someone waiting patiently for the news that could save their life. Dalton’s Moon Foundation When you watch someone do something extremely difficult with an ease and grace that makes the impossible look effortless, it’s inspiring. Inspiring others is something Dalton Levine did throughout his lifetime through his amazing dance and orchestra performances, his impressive academic achievements and his eternally optimistic and inspiring way he lived his life while fighting a very rare and aggressive form of cancer, adrenocortical carcinoma (ACC). Diagnosed in high school, Dalton’s resolve never faltered. He remained positive and determined to fight this disease and get better, all while keeping his sense of humor and comforting younger cancer patients fighting the same fight. A warrior to the end, Dalton sadly passed away on December 13th, 2016. Following Dalton’s example of relentless positivity, humanity and kindness; his family was inspired to create the Dalton’s Moon Foundation in his memory. The continual mission of the foundation is to raise funds to empower armies of doctors, nurses, clinicians, scientists and support staff in our hospitals to get the resources they need in order to make cancer a thing of the past. Their dream is that the Dalton’s Moon Foundation will make the dream of “no more cancer” a reality. With these goals in mind, Dalton’s family and friends invite the community to join them in the 2nd Annual Dalton’s Moon Foundation Golf Tournament on Friday, June 15th, at the Spring Valley Golf Club. Funds raised from the tournament, as well as an online auction that will be live from June 8th-15th, will benefit Dancers Against Cancer, Children’s Hospital

Colorado, Children’s Tumor Foundation, and several more deserving causes to be determined. Before his passing, Dalton had participated in Colorado School of Dance’s “Dance for a Difference” show, a fundraiser for Children’s Hospital Colorado, since its inception. To date, this annual benefit has raised well over $100,000 for the hospital. He was also very proud to be chosen as an ambassador for Children’s Hospital in 2016. He represented the hospital at multiple events and supported numerous fundraising initiatives. Funds will also be used for a Legend High School College Scholarship, to be awarded to a student who exemplifies the same qualities and passion for learning and helping others that Dalton did. Despite the rigors of his intense
cancer treatments during his junior and senior years, Dalton continued to excel academically, graduating from LHS with honors, on time, with a better than 4.0 grade point average and in the top 3% of his class. Dalton had plans to attend University of Colorado - Boulder as a Computer Science major and ultimately to go to medical school and become a pediatrician. Rachel returns to her family’s home in Kenya after escaping her banishment to England after the death of her mother. She has been away for six long years and yearns for Africa and all she knew. She returns in the midst of a very unsettled political climate, with the Mau Mau secret society fighting for change in the country. Rachel will have to overcome painful memories, try to rebuild her relationship with her father, and gain acceptance from the woman who replaced her mother in the home.
Pam: It took a couple of chapters to pull me into this story, but then I found myself engrossed in this book. This author made me have very strong emotions about the characters in this story and I frequently fought the urge to call you and vent about a couple of them! Did you feel strongly about the many characters in this book? Becky: We are on the same page with our opinions of this book. It slowly lulled me into the story and then I couldn’t put it down. The author did an amazing job giving life to each character. I loved some, hated others and had genuine concern during this story. Rachel was easy to like and I felt a great deal of empathy for her situation. She is returning home expecting to fall back into the life she had six years ago and put closure on the loss of her mother. Sadly, life has moved on in Kenya and her distant father does not create a healthy homecoming for her. What did you think about this father figure?

his daughter regardless of his new romantic involvement. Although they were distant, he also had responsibility to inform Rachel of the reality of the hostile environment before she returned. Do you think that the author painted a vivid picture of the volatile situation in Kenya? Pam: I do feel that the author painted a vivid picture. This changing climate and violence was contrasted with the stubborn insistence from the land owners in the area that everything was fine and all would quickly return to their normal. This was clear in the behavior of her father’s new partner, Sara. She was determined to throw a big party to celebrate the coronation of the queen of England, although the threat of violence surrounded them. I felt that Rachel’s father would certainly speak up at this point. Were you surprised by the absurdity of this situation?
Pam: I was so frustrated by Rachel’s father! She returned home hoping to find a familiar place in her family’s home. However, when she arrived, she found a very different environment. Her father has opened his home to another woman and her son. She makes it clear from the first introduction that she is in charge and Rachel is not welcome in this changed home. I felt that Rachel’s father was torn between loyalties and continued to hope that he would be what Rachel needed him to be. Do you feel that this new woman was at fault for the change in the home? Or do you feel that it was also caused by the unsettled climate of their country?
Becky: I think this is part of the reason that I liked this author’s style so much. The characters were interesting and had depth. Sara’s desire to have a party during such a dangerous time was ridiculous. Yet, I love that it spoke to how unconnected she was to the country she was living in. Those details make average characters more interesting. Her desire to ignore what was going on outside of the walls of her home was baffling. Rachel is equally as interesting and unrealistic about the dangers as she crosses some boundaries with some of her father’s employees. Did you find her to be naive or was she still living in the past when it wasn’t life threatening to be friendly to the locals?
Becky: It would be a combination of both but I think the sole responsibility lies with her father. He should have been committed to
Pam: I felt that Rachel was continuing relationships she had when she was younger. This may be considered to be living in the past,

since this was what her life (and her relationships) was like when her mother was alive. I don’t think she was being naive, but hopeful that these connections could still exist among the turbulence around her. I think your comment about Rachel and Sara being unrealistic about the surrounding dangers is very accurate. In their own ways (completely opposite from each other), they are trying to create their own realities in the midst of changing ways. Rachel reconnects with a young man that served as her tutor when she was younger. How did you feel about this relationship? Was it one that you hoped Rachel would continue? Becky: Inside my head I was screaming for Rachel to stop. Without disclosing too much, this was a complicated situation for several reasons. She is only about eighteen years old, isolated and searching for comfort and he was part of the past she was desperately trying to resuscitate. Did I want it to happen? No, but it was a natural progression in the story. There is some very interesting information on the authors website, www. jennifermcveigh.com, that I highly recommend. Getting out and enjoying the great outdoors is one of the biggest benefits of living in the heart of some of the most picturesque landscape anywhere in the country. Whether you prefer “glamping” it up in an RV or going for the full effect and pitching a tent for the weekend, there are hundreds of choices for a weekend in the wilderness. According to 50campfires.com, these are some of the gems located close to home! CHATFIELD STATE PARK IN LITTLETON–
Reservoir waters in the park allows boating, skiing, sailing or fishing. There are 26 miles of hiking and biking trails and 197 campsites to choose from, all with electrical hookups and many with water and sewer hook ups as well. in the 880 acre Cherry Creek Reservoir, Cherry Creek Campground offers water sports including jet skiing and swimming. You can also enjoy horseback riding trails as well as open space for flying model airplanes and shooting ranges. 131 campsites can accommodate tents and RVs with 50amp full hook up pull throughs. CAMP DICK CAMPGOUND IN AURORA–
History buffs will appreciate the origins of this campground, originally established in 1930s as a Civilian Conservation Corp camp. Right on the banks of St. Vrain Creek, it’s the perfect spot for fly-fishing. You can bring your mountain bike and cruise along one of the many trails at the campsite, taking in the gorgeous scenery. All sites can accommodate both tents or RVs and each includes a picnic table and fire ring with a grill rack. There are no showers on site, so if you want to rinse off, you’ll have to do it the old fashioned
way, in one of the nearby lakes! For more information or to book your dates go to www.recreation.gov COLD SPRINGS CAMPGROUND IN IDAHO SPRINGS– A little under 40
miles from Denver, Cold Springs offers a variety of hiking trails, some easy enough to manage with little ones and one much steeper, but shorter trail that rewards hikers with an incredible view from the top. There are 38 sites that will accommodate tents and RVs (but not RVs with slide-outs.) Vault toilets are also accessible on-site. If you are a Jeep lover (like our Mayor) Cold Springs has great off-road trails too! To book your site, go to www.reserveamerica.com
RAINBOW LAKES CAMPGROUND NEAR NEDERLAND– If you’re looking for an
authentic, old-school , tent only camping trip, this is the destination for you. Just about an hour north of Denver, this campground has 18 different sites that are all first come, first serve (so get there early!) Picnic tables and fire rings are available at each site and vault toilets are accessible as well. There is no source of
drinking water at Rainbow Lakes, so be sure to pack in your own supply. While you’re there, explore the Rainbow Lakes Trail, which takes you on a short hike through the string of ponds that are great fishing spots. Or check out the Arapaho Glacier overlook off Glacier Rim Trail. For more details, go to www.fs.usda.gov. KELLY FLATS CAMPGROUND IN FT. COLLINS– In the heart of the Arapaho
and Roosevelt National Forest, this 29 site campground offers a peaceful ambiance, with camp sites surrounded by towering evergreens. Of the 29 sites, 19 will accommodate RVs up to 65 feet, but there are no hookups and the remaining 10 sites are reserved for tents only. Those tall trees offer up a bit of privacy between sites and to add to the beauty of it all, the Cache La Poudre River runs right through the campground. This river is the only one in Colorado designated as a “Wild and Scenic River” by the National Park Service, which allows for an abundance of fishing opportunities. MORAINE PARK CAMPGROUND IN ESTES PARK– Just northwest of Denver,
Moraine Park Campground, located in the Rocky Mountain National Forest, offers up adventure at every turn. Within the park there are 355 miles of hiking trails, three different lakes for water sports and activities, and much more! The 245 sites are available on a first come, first serve basis and can accommodate tents, RVs, and trailers but there are no hookups of
any kind at any of the sites. Group sites are available to accommodate groups of 10-40 people. For more information, go to www.recreation.gov. Also in the Estes Park area is Aspenglen Campgound. Aspenglen boasts 53 sites for both tents and small RVs (up to 30 feet) but there are no water, electric or sewer hookups available. This gem is only open from May to late September, so reserve a spot early! CARTER LAKE CAMPGROUND IN LOVELAND– Right on the edge of the
Columbia River, Carter Lake is a very popular spot for tourists and residents alike. All sites are paved with 20amp, 30amp or 50amp full hookup options. If you don’t want to “rough it” too much, there is a place to do laundry, free wifi and you will be within walking distance to lots of dining and shopping. There is also a place for your four legged family members to play off leash. Reservations are required, go to www.reserveamerica.com.
PAINTED ROCKS CAMPGROUND IN WOODLAND PARK– This campground
got its name from the gorgeous colors on nearby sandstone outcroppings. Painted Rocks is located on the edge of a grassy meadow, not far from Manitou Lake. Both tent and RV sites are available that come equipped with a fire ring and picnic tables. Vault toilets and drinking water are also accessible from the campsite. Go to www.recreation.gov for more information.
PARRY PEAK CAMPGROUND IN LEADVILLE– The first come, first serve
sites at Parry Peak go quickly as it is a fantastic spot for creekside camping. Sites accommodate both tents and RVs up to 32 feet (but there are no hookups.) Boating, swimming and fishing are options at Twin Lakes or you can go hiking on the Colorado Trail. This 500 mile trail extends from Denver to Durango! If out of this world views are more your thing, climb up to Mount Elbert’s summit and see what the world looks like from 14,433 feet! Go to cpw.state.co.us for more information. CHEYENNE MOUNTAIN STATE PARK IN COLORADO SPRINGS– An hour and a
half from Denver is a camper’s paradise. The park is located on 2,700 acres with 51 full service RV hookup sites and 10 walk-in tent sites, both equipped with restrooms, showers and laundry facilities. There are also group sites available for campers traveling with larger numbers. The state park also offers an archery range with regular, field and 3D targets. For more information, go to cpw.state.co.us MUELLER STATE IN DIVIDE– If sightings of wildlife are a draw, this is the campground destination you need to hit this summer. Mueller State is home to black bears, elk, hawks, mule deer and many bird and small mammals. Enjoy hiking, fishing, and horseback riding during warmer months as well as cross country skiing and sledding
during the winter season. Spaces for tents and RVs are available as well as the capability to rent yurts and cabins! There are also five different geocaches located throughout the park! Go to cpw.state. co.us for more information. GREEN RIDGE CAMPGROUND IN GRANBY– If you are willing to drive
just a bit further from Denver, Green Ridge is an idyllic spot for a wonderful weekend. Nestled between the Colorado River and Shadow Mountain Reservoir, it’s the perfect spot for fishing, boating, swimming, kayaking and canoeing. You might be able to get in some whitewater rafting as well. There are 73 sites for tent and RVs with flush toilets nearby. Pack the sunscreen though, between the water and the beetle damaged trees; there is not a lot of shade to be had here. For more information, go to www.recreation.gov. If you want a little more shade in the Granby area, head to Sunset Point. There are 25 non-electric sites that will accommodate tents, trailers and RVS, all with lots of shade from the summer sun. Each site comes with a tent pad, picnic table and fire ring for cooking. Lake Granby offers boating, swimming fishing and canoeing. This gorgeous, lakefront site also boasts a panoramic view of Table Mountain as well. Go to www.recreation.gov for more details.

WHY DID YOU GET INTO THIS TYPE OF BUSINESS?
Well . . . I grew up eating Cheetos and a Coke and thinking it was good for me. As a family with two busy careers and four kids, we were eating the traditional American diet. However, we had a child who struggled with unexplained health issues. After seeing so many doctors and trying so many prescriptions we finally learned that literally everything he was ailing from was caused by his diet. We made little changes that led to drastic improvements. We then made bigger changes, and even more improvements followed. We all began to feel better. It was not always easy, but as a family we all evolved. We learned all we could

about nutrition and more importantly, became completely engaged and excited about making the most delicious food that would actually properly fuel and help restore good, vital health. That was 12 years ago, and I often think how lucky we were to be able to make those changes. After working a super high stress corporate job for over 25 years, I made a drastic change and decided to do something I really care about. Our entire family is involved, and we are really loving what we are creating.
WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT OWNING YOUR BUSINESS?
I am entrepreneurial by nature. Even though I worked for two very large insurance companies, I always found a way to make it feel like I was running my own business because I cared so much about the people and the results. This is just taking it another step further.
