We Need Your Head!
In just a few short weeks, the entire community will be putting their heads together, literally, to fight for funding to end pediatric cancer. The shears are primed and ready for the Annual Shave the Mayor Event for St. Baldrick’s on Saturday, April 27th. This year marks the 6th annual Shave the Mayor
for St. Baldrick’s event here in Parker. To date, this incredible event has raised nearly a quarter of a million dollars for cancer research, but sadly, the need for funding to find a cure for pediatric cancers remains and that’s where all of you come in.
Head over to shavethemayor.com and sign up to GET SHAVED at the Vehicle Vault on the 27th or simply donate to a Shavee who has already signed up and is working towards their fundraising goal! You can also sign up to volunteer at the event &/or become an event sponsor.
Real superheroes live in the hearts of small children fighting big battles and often, those little warriors are fighting with huge smiles on their faces. Show your support by showing up and being a part of Shave the Mayor for St. Baldrick’s and leave with your heart full and your head bald!
Cancer has touched all of us, in some way. We all know someone who has heroically faced and fought this unforgiving and tenacious disease. Coming together in the fight to find a cure, especially on behalf of the youngest of heroic cancer patients, is a small act that can create a huge ripple effect in the lives of all those affected.

Hats Off to the Class of 2019
It’s nearly time for the pomp and circumstance of graduation. Whether you have a high school or college graduate, it’s a special time and incredible achievement that calls for celebration. In the era of all things Etsy and people trying to out-Pinterest each other, here are some (relatively) easy ways to personalize your graduation celebrations from the pros at HGTV.
A party is nothing without some serious snack game. Try setting up a Popcorn Bar with flavorings and toppings and choose containers that compliment the theme of your party. Bake and serve graduation cap pretzels – yep, it’s a thing. This is definitely something you will want to take a practice run at first, before the party date. Shape the dough into the outline of the cap and tassel, bake and serve with hot mustard or other tasty dipping sauces. If you prefer sweet to salty, consider a Cotton Candy bar, and since this sweet treat comes in all kinds of colors, you can find one that fits with your theme/school colors. Is your grad “one smart cookie?” Carry that theme through with a cookie bar. Bake (or buy) lots of varieties of cookies and display them on plates, tiered trays and bowls to add height to the display. You could also achieve the same effect with a candy bar, displaying sweets in glass cylinders of varying heights, bowls, and in tiered containers to add lots of color and interest to your display. If you are displaying photos of your grad, think about creating a photo wreath. Get creative, use small frames or just attach the photos themselves to your wreath (which can simply be a painted wood cutout or a grapevine wreath) and leave a lasting first impression! Another creative way to display photos is to buy (or make) large letters spelling out the word “GRAD” and then printing a collection of small photos in black and white, then attaching them to the letters, covering them in photos to make a centerpiece that really stands out. You can also create your own graduation year centerpiece display with tissue paper. Using heavy cardstock, cut out large numbers (2019) and attach them to small wooden dowels. Crinkle small pieces of tissue paper (using whatever color(s) coordinate with your theme) and cover each number. Fill four narrow vases or glass bottles with colorful vase fillers and stand each dowel in the vases, creating a colorful centerpiece that makes the graduation year standout! Be sure to designate a spot for cards. Use a decorative box (or
7
April 2019 search lone tree magazine
decorate your own) and make it easy for guests to deliver their well wishes and gifts to the graduate. Having a card box also ensures that cards are all kept together to transport home at the party’s end. To make signing the guest book a little more fun, opt for a more creative approach, such as setting up a Jenga game and having guests sign a block – then the grad has a fun keepsake to take home with all those well wishes! Have a custom decorative pillow case printed and allow guests to sign with a fabric marker, then your grad can cuddle up with a little piece of home wherever they are headed after graduation. It’s common for guests of showers and graduation celebrations to offer advice to the guest of honor. If you’d like to bring this tradition to life at your graduation celebration, set up an “advice tree” using decorative branches in a vase. Place a stack of small cards or note cards, pens and mini clothespins next to the “tree” and guests can leave their words of wisdom clipped to the branches, creating a sweet display by the party’s end. One trend that looks as though it is here to stay is booking a photo booth for your celebration. Buy or make signs and props to capture the moments with all your guests on your grad’s special day. Planning an outdoor celebration? Don’t forget the yard games! Washers, bocce ball, and ladder toss are always big hits. Take the fun one step further and create your own, oversized dominoes (paint the white dots on planks of wood and play your own “big game” on the lawn!) Set up the cornhole for a party tournament and make it personal by buying (or making) school themed bean bags with the university logo of the school your grad is attending. Often, party favors are used as a way of thanking your guests for coming and leaving them with a little memento of the day. If you’re nostalgic, you could always go for the “Future’s so bright, I gotta wear shades” mantra and hand out sunglasses, even go so far as to coordinate the colors of the classes to the theme of your party/school colors. You can also order (or make) labels for mint tins and hand out “commencemints,” order personalized M&M packages, or use the party supplies as favors and have custom plastic cups printed for the occasion and let the guests take those home (bonus is, there’s less to clean up if all the cups leave the party!) Since graduation time is basically the same for all students, be sure to send out “save the dates” or even your invitations early. Make sure your party doesn’t conflict with your grad’s best friend – or better yet, consider co-hosting with other families and combining your grad’s party with his/her friends for one, big celebration (and split the cost and party prep responsibilities!) This is a special time for so many students and parents. Whatever your plans are, enjoy this time celebrating your son’s and daughter’s achievements and toasting the great things yet to come. Congratulations Class of 2019!

For golf lovers, as soon as the frost begins to thaw, they are grabbing their clubs and hitting the links. Golf is a game that can be enjoyed by players of any age, but it is also physically demanding for players of every age. It takes a lot of endurance to handle the amount of swings it takes to get through 18 holes of golf. There are long durations of low intensity (walking, putting) combined with bursts of high intensity (swings) over the course of several hours. Golfers need to be in peak condition physically, and with their cardiovascular health, to perform at the top of their game. Due to the physical demands of the game, golfers often suffer from lower back problems as well as elbow, shoulder and wrist injuries (just ask Tiger Woods how those injuries can take a toll on your game!) Along the constant torque of those muscles and joints, these injuries stem from faulty movement patterns or poor swing mechanics. In order to play your best and avoid suffering from nagging injuries, you need to have flexibility in your trunk, hips and shoulders, as well as good torso and pelvic rotation. Lack of flexibility will not only increase your risk of injury but reinforce those faulty movement patterns, create muscle imbalance and led to the poor swing mechanics that can make golf an even more frustrating sport! 9
April 2019 search lone tree magazine
Flexibility alone is not enough, strength is needed to try to prevent injuries. The term “core” is thrown around a lot, but those muscles really act as a “cylinder of strength,” especially in terms of the mechanics of golf. This “cylinder” covers your abdominal muscles, wraps around your back to help support your shoulder blades and extend all the way to the muscles of your hip joints. Having this cylinder of strength is essential to create the necessary strength needed to get that sweet swing. If you enjoy hitting the greens but are hesitant to get back out there due to some nagging aches and pains from injury, there is something you can throw in your golf bag to get your back out on the course (without an aching back!) Physical Therapy and Pilates can get improve your strength and flexibility as well as increase your cardiovascular fitness – all while bringing down your golf score. Pilates and Physical Therapy offers individualized instruction to address variability in body mechanics as well as addressing poor swing mechanics specific in each golfer. Pilates and physical therapy can also provide modifications and adaptations for each exercise. Pilates increases strength, helps improve balance and alignment, increases flexibility and helps improve movement control. If you are already suffering from aches and
pains, physical therapy can help by first addressing the injury (chronic, long term and persistent/acute or something that just happened recently.) PT can work on decreasing pain and helping create new movement patterns. Danika Henkel is a Physical Therapist and certified Pilates instructor who has a lot of experience with injuries that plague golfers. In addition to treating them in others, she has suffered may of them herself since she began golfing at the age of 12 and went on to competing as a collegiate golfer. She can relate to the aches and pains that come with the sport and understands how those nagging injuries can affect your game and your overall well-being. Danika’s extensive experience as a golfer and expertise as a Pilates trainer and Physical Therapist makes her every golfer’s new best friend. Take a mulligan on aches and pains throughout the summer; visit Danika at Intelligent Motion Therapy and see how what a difference Pilates can make in your strength and flexibility or how physical therapy can help you get your swing back! Douglas County Veterans Golf Tournament The majestic eagle taking flight that is the Veterans Monument, Freedom’s Keeper, in Veterans Plaza in Downtown Castle Rock is a constant, genuine reminder of the selfless and too many times, ultimate sacrifice that our Veterans make for us every day. The Douglas County Veterans Memorial Foundation was started to get that magnificent eagle monument erected. Now that the monument is in place, the focus of the foundation has shifted to continually support our hometown heroes, our local veterans.
Grants are being accepted for the DCVMF Veterans Assistance Grant program. This program is designed to assist with needs that local Veterans have, whether they be transportation needs, ADA home modifications, service dogs, funeral services, or any area where a service gap exists. 11

The Red Address Book
Never Pay Retail for College: How Smart Parents Find the Right School for the Right Price
By: Sofia Lundberg
Doris is a 96-year-old woman that lives independently in Stockholm, Sweden. Her life is quiet and for the most part she keeps to herself. One of her greatest joys is her weekly Skype call to her grandniece Jenny who lives in America. They have a special bond and it is her only living relative. Since childhood, Doris has kept an address book that lists everyone she has met. Many now are crossed out and Dead is written next to the name. She decides to start writing about some of the people in her address book so Jenny will know more about her life. Doris had some interesting adventures and Jenny will learn more about her own past through some of these stories. BECKY: This is a debut novel
that doesn’t feel like a first time author. The story is based on the author’s own Aunt Doris. After her passing her address book was found and it inspired this story. I actually keep a physical address book but every few years I buy a new one and some names are deleted as friendships change, addresses are not updated or sometimes through a passing. This book has me pondering the value of if I had kept the names from childhood until now. Did you have the same type of emotion or reflection while reading this story?
PAM: I also keep an address book and update it periodically. I had similar thoughts as I read this book. Doris embraced each memory, whether painful or joyful. This certainly made me think about how we handle challenges with people in our lives. Although it is often preferable to try to forget painful experiences, they help form our characters and values. Doris seemed to truly understand this and hoped to pass all of her memories on to her niece. Doris spent much time alone, with her only living relative very

far away. This also was a point of reflection for me. Did you, as well?
BECKY: It did have me thinking
about how sad it is for seniors that have no family to assist them as they become less able to care for themselves. My family is really quite small and I am blessed to have my mother close by but it was a reminder for me that the time I spend with her is special and limited. I fell in love with this character right away and the story came to life for me. I thought that the transition between the past and present was smooth and the pace of the story was perfect. Did you enjoy one timeframe over the other?
PAM: That is a difficult question! The timeframe of her youth was essential to the story that led to her current time and helped explain her circumstances. I felt more connected to her as an elderly woman because I wanted to jump into the pages and visit with her and help her advocate for her wishes! Her grandniece, Jenny, and her have a lovely relationship and Skype each week. This was an interesting twist to the story and very relevant to our time

of technology. Jenny wants to help, but is very far away and taking care of her young family. Did you connect with Jenny in this story?
BECKY: I loved that the
author included Skype in the story. Please introduce the seniors in your life to Facebook, Messenger or other communication avenues. It has helped my mother connect to so many people that she wouldn’t normally have contact with and keeps her mind active. I certainly did connect with Jenny. My children are not as young but I understand how hard it is to balance caring for your children and a parent. It is a constant juggle. I highly recommend this book but it’s time to close this chapter and move on to the next novel. Pam, what are we reading next?
PAM: We are going to explore the lives of three women that are interwoven with the history of the Lusitania, as we read The Glass Ocean by Beatriz Williams, Lauren Willig and Karen White.
