There will never be another Luther, but if there was ever a voice to do Luther justice, it’s that of Ruben Studdard, who was hailed the “New Luther” during his American Idol-winning run. It’s been over a decade since the world met Ruben Studdard and ever since his debut, the man dubbed “The Velvet Teddy Bear” by none other than Gladys Knight, has been winning the world over again and again with his romantic balladry. Studdard has recorded five albums and toured with legends including Peabo Bryson, CeCe Winans, Melissa Manchester and David Foster and was

nominated for a Grammy Award in 2003 for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance. For this performance, there is a 4 ticket limit for this performance and print-at-home tickets will not be available. Friday, March 15th – Rockapella hits the Main Stage In the era of movies like Pitch Perfect and tv shows like The Sing-Off and Glee, you would be hard pressed to find more influential group than Rockapella; one of the world’s most sophisticated, enduring, and imitated vocal groups around today. They first achieved national fame and recognition in the early 90’s after being featured on PBS’s Where in the World is Carmen San Diego?. Since then, they’ve toured the globe and garnered generations of vocal music fans, all while keeping their sound current along the way. See (and hear) this vocal spectacle for yourself as they perform catchy original pop songs and contemporary renditions of Motown, Pop and Soul classics. This performance can be a part of the Design Your Own Package deal with Lone Tree Arts! Lone Tree Arts Center 10075 Commons Street Box Office: 720-509-1000 www.lonetreeartscenter.org

ShamROCK Stampede The dangers our military and first responders face daily are more than most of us could bear, yet they do so willingly and with a bravery that is unmatched. For many, the battles they fight leave them wounded in ways that no one can see, but that those heroic first responders and veterans feel the repercussions of every day. We owe it to the men and women who put our safety and well being ahead of their own to stand with them to fight the ongoing fight to heal those with PTSD. The organizers of the very popular Turkey ROCK Trot have taken this cause, which is very close to their hearts, and created the ShamROCK Stampede 5K/10K for PTSD. The ShamROCK Stampede and ShamJam will kick off with the races. The course spreads out over the East Plum Creek Trail, including a Kid’s 1K ShamScram, the 5K and 10K Grand-Sham! with Pam & Becky

Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail By: Cheryl Strayed

Farmers Markets: A Guide to Small Scale Business and Entrepreneurship

Wild tells the story of Cheryl, who lost her mother to cancer and then witnessed her family scatter. As she struggled with the loss of her mother and her family, her marriage ended in divorce and she was lost. She saw a book about the Pacific Crest Trail and an idea began to grow. She decided to take on this challenge alone, as she attempted to put her life back together and find herself. Although she had a love of the outdoors, she did not have the experience that would prepare her for this journey. She would hike more than a thousand miles of the Pacific Crest Trail from the Mojave Desert through California and Oregon to Washington state. PAM: Within the last few

years, this book was made into a movie, starring Reese Witherspoon. I was intrigued by the trailer, but never had the opportunity to see it. When I recently saw the book on a list of must-reads I felt drawn to the story. Becky, have you seen the movie?

BECKY: I have not seen the movie yet, but I think it would be interesting to see the scenery that was described in the book. I have heard of this trail and am amazed that someone without experience accomplished so much! I found it strange to read a book that already placed Reese in my head as the main character. Usually, it’s the other way around. We read a novel and then create our own version of the character. That threw me off a bit and I struggled to picture Reese in that role. What did you enjoy the most in this book, Cheryl’s story of her life to that point, or the process of completing the elevenhundred mile hike? PAM: I enjoyed her description of the day to day struggle to complete her hike. Honestly, I was frustrated with aspects of the story of her life before the hike and was eager to

13

March 2019 search lone tree magazine

see if she found healing, worth, and understanding through her challenging hike. I completely agree with you about the accomplishment of an inexperienced hiker taking on such a monumental task! Her determination to continue to fight to reach her goal was admirable. I wonder if she would have had as much drive if she was not battling so many demons from her life. Do you think this was the key to her success?

BECKY: That is an interesting question and I wonder how a book club would respond. I wouldn’t say that I viewed her as a goal driven athlete. The story would have drawn me in even more if she was. As I read, I felt like her personality didn’t line up with the physical accomplishments she was making so it was unbalanced for me. I gather that she was at the end of her rope and this was a form of therapy to help her crawl up from hitting rock bottom. She wasn’t prepared for this adventure but she needed to let go of the past and ultimately find a new life for herself. I wonder if her success was due to the fact that she wasn’t ready to return to her regular life. She continued to put one

foot in front of the other until the end. I struggled liking and understanding Cheryl. I admire that she was so honest about her past but I didn’t meld with her story nor did I have empathy for her. Did you connect with her and would you be interested to know more about how she is doing now?

PAM: I also struggled to

connect with her throughout the story. I would be interested to know more about how she is doing now. She shared some very self destructive behaviors during the recounting of her past and I would like to follow up and see if her hiking experience helped her overcome these struggles. Along the trail are small towns where a hiker can have packages sent in order to restock supplies. Do you think it would be interesting to spend some time in one of the towns and talk to the people as they hiked through?

BECKY: That would be very interesting but I honestly would rather be one of the hikers! It’s time to walk away from this story and move on to our April selection. Join us as we discuss The Red Address Book by Sofia Lundberg.

In his new book, “Farmers Markets: A Guide to Small Scale Business and Entrepreneurship”, author Bill English uses his business and counseling experience to provide a guide of helpful hints and counsel for the novice as well as the experienced Farmers Market vendor, to enable the small business man/woman to increase the opportunity to succeed. Within these pages, you will find nuggets of great information that will help you with your business venture. Some of the tenants taught are also applicable to other small business ventures. The book is meant to be a quick read, organized to help you set up a new business or improve an existing business. Those who want to expand their business beyond the single Farmers Market, will find information to encourage entrepreneurship to operate many other Farmers Market booths as well as expand into the wholesale arenas selling to local, regional, state, and national outlets.
