Dalton’s Moon Foundation Golf Tournament

When you watch someone do something extremely difficult with an ease and grace that makes the impossible look effortless, it’s inspiring. Inspiring others is something Dalton Levine did throughout his lifetime through his amazing dance and orchestra performances, his impressive academic achievements and his eternally optimistic and inspiring way he lived his life while fighting a very rare and aggressive form of cancer, Adrenocortical Carcinoma (ACC). Diagnosed in high school, Dalton’s resolve never faltered. He remained positive and determined to fight this disease and get better, all while keeping his sense of humor and comforting younger cancer patients fighting the same fight. A warrior to the end, Dalton sadly passed away on December 13th, 2016. Following Dalton’s example of relentless positivity, humanity and kindness; his family was inspired to create the Dalton’s Moon Foundation in his memory. The continual mission of the foundation is to raise funds to empower armies of doctors, nurses, clinicians, scientists and support staff in our hospitals to get the resources they need in order to make cancer a thing of the past. Their dream is that the Dalton’s Moon Foundation will make the dream of “no more cancer” a reality.
Golf Club. Funds raised from the tournament, as well as an amazing silent auction, will benefit Dancers Against Cancer, Children’s Hospital Colorado, Flight for Life Colorado, and local student beneficiary scholarships. Before his passing, Dalton had participated in Colorado School of Dance’s “Dance for a Difference” show, a fundraiser for Children’s Hospital Colorado, since its inception. To date, this annual benefit has raised well over $100,000 for the hospital. He was also very proud to be chosen as an ambassador for Children’s Hospital in 2016. He represented the hospital at multiple events and supported numerous fundraising initiatives.
Dalton’s legacy lives on and his family and friends invite the community to celebrate that legacy at the Third Annual Dalton’s Moon Foundation Golf Tournament on Friday, June 14th, at the Spring Valley
If you were fortunate enough to see Dalton perform, you know that his love of life came through in his passion for the arts. If you never got that chance, you will no doubt be just as inspired by

Despite the rigors of his intense cancer treatments during his junior and senior years, Dalton continued to excel academically, graduating from LHS with honors, on time, with a better than 4.0 grade point average and in the top 3% of his class. Dalton had plans to attend University of Colorado - Boulder as a Computer Science major and ultimately to go to medical school and become a pediatrician. Dalton’s commitment to his education is the driving force behind the scholarships now awarded from funds raised by the Dalton’s Moon Foundation.
Dalton through the work of this amazing foundation and the legacy Dalton continues to leave. If you and the family are looking for a little water adventure, check out Paddle Days! Bring your own SUP’s or Kayaks and enjoy the water. Registration begins this month and onsite inspection of water craft is required. Paddle Days for 2019 are May 6th, June 8th, 15th and 23rd, August 11th, 17th and 25th and September 2nd, 8th, 21st and 22nd. Go to rhrecreation.org for more information. Colorado SUP Sports will have Paddle Board/ Kayak rentals and lessons for those looking to get in on the fun that don’t have their own equipment or are looking to try something new. Rentals and lessons are available late May through September, Tuesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, however pre-registration is required. At night, put your food in the car...not your tent. Critters love a midnight snack and you don’t want them waking you up to eat. Dry ice in the bottom of your cooler will keep your ice from melting and help stop the “food soup” that your cooler usually ends up with. Put a magnesium spark tool and dryer lint in a zipper lock style plastic bag to keep it dry. Are You Vintage and Vibrant?
The Seniors’ Council of Douglas County is joining the celebration of “Older Americans’ Month” by hosting a daylong educational event entitled “Vintage & Vibrant: Exploring the Latest Trends in Living Well & Aging Well.” This signature event will be held on May 22nd from 8am - 3:00pm at the Parker Arts Culture and Events Center (20000 Pikes Peak Drive in Parker.) Vintage and Vibrant will focus on educational topics for Seniors that they may not typically experience. It will include keynote speakers, nine interactive breakout sessions, morning refreshments, lunch, guest bags and door prizes! A nominal, $5 pre-registration fee covers it all, however scholarships are available if needed. Onsite registration on at the event on May 22nd will be just $7 for the entire day’s events. Starting off the event, the morning keynote speakers will be discussing the health benefits of laughter and then entertain and engage the audience with comedy skits. During the lunch hour, the festivities will delve into the amazing world of wearable healthcare. This relatively new field is applying technology in ingenious ways to enhance quality of life and in some cases saving lives as well.

In addition to the entertaining and informative keynote speakers, numerous breakout sessions will offer a wide variety of intriguing topics that event goers can learn much more about. Memorial Day Veterans’ Service of Remembrance “Those who have long enjoyed such privileges as we enjoy forget in time that men have died to win them.”
Those most poignant words, spoken by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, ring as true now as they did when he first uttered them. Memorial Day marks the end of the school year, beginning of the summer and sometimes the chance to sneak away for a three day weekend with the family. What we as a country can never forget is that Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is a most solemn and sincere day of remembrance for those who have given the ultimate sacrifice. J.S. Parker Cemetery and Ponderosa Valley Funeral Services are once again looking forward to providing a meaningful ceremony as Parker collectively pauses to pay tribute to our fallen heroes at the 10th Annual

Memorial Day Veterans’ Service of Remembrance. The entire community is invited to join them to share and participate in this ceremony honoring our beloved Veterans.
Monday, May 27th, the ceremony will commence at 10:00am with an F-16 Flyover from the Colorado Air National Guard. Parker’s beloved Parker Chorale will perform and the Honorable Mayor Mike Waid will give the Welcome Address. The Service of Remembrance’s inspirational message will be given by Ret. U.S. Army Col. Lindy Blackburn, United States Military Academy Class of ‘69. This year’s service will also include a 21 Gun Salute, TAPS, the folding and presentation of the United States Flag and the reading of veterans’ name and recognition of all veterans in attendance.
Please bring your own chair and umbrella to the event and be advised that inclement weather will cancel the event. Take a moment out of your day to recognize the selfless service of these brave men and women and their families who have sacrificed so much for so many. Join your community in the 9th Annual Memorial Day Veterans’ Service of Remembrance, and remember every day, not just Memorial Day, is the perfect day to thank a Veteran for their service. The Whispering of the Willows

It is April 1915 and we follow two young women as they begin an adventure on the luxurious Lusitania. Coming from very different backgrounds, Caroline Telfair Hochstetter and Tessa Fairweather find themselves on the same passenger liner steaming towards another country. Caroline is hoping to rescue her marriage and find the love that seems to have faded. Tessa is working with her sister on what she is hoping will be her last heist before turning to an honest life. Sarah Blake enters the story as she works in 2013 to unravel the stories that bind these women together. Sarah discovers treachery, intrigue, and love as she investigates the women and the circumstances around their trip,as well as the ill-fated Lusitania. PAM: We have read a book by these three authors, which I enjoyed immensely. When I found that they had written another surrounding the historical topic of the Lusitania, it was immediately on my list. I was drawn immediately to this story and the characters. Did you feel the same, Becky? BECKY: You would think that it would be difficult for three authors to write a cohesive story. Once again, I think that they were successful in making this novel flow. The storyline had a consistent pace and the imagery was similar. There is one storyline that I could sense a difference in depth but it didn’t take away from the overall story. I was not drawn in immediately to the full storyline. It took me a little time to completely pull these three stories together. I was much more interested in one story and one character so I think I rushed through the others to get back to my favorite. Did you enjoy all three storylines or did one grab your attention more? PAM: I also found that I was drawn to one storyline initially. However, as the story progressed, I found that my chosen storyline changed. I began to look forward to the life of a different character, as the connections became more clear and as I became more familiar with all of

the characters in the story. Caroline was the character I was most drawn to initially. She is hopeful to rekindle her marriage during this trip on the luxurious Lusitania. Her husband is more interested in his business dealings than in spending time with her and she is hoping to change his mind. Caroline is also becoming increasingly frustrated as her husband feels that she is too fragile and delicate to handle much of anything. Were you frustrated by her husband’s views of her abilities? BECKY: Her marriage was not ideal and he was not an attentive husband. He treated her like she was an accessory to his life and not a true partner. However, this was set in 1915 so I think you have to take that into account. A woman of her financial status was possibly viewed as arm candy so I think it was appropriate for the timeline and story. Caroline was a modern woman and wanted more from her marriage so she was an interesting character and I always enjoy a strong woman in a story. During the same timeline there is another character, Tessa that is an experienced con. What did you think about this spicy girl? Did you see her as the bad guy or did you secretly cheer for her to be successful in her plan?

PAM: Tessa was a complicated character and she evoked many emotions. She had grown up being involved in schemes and cons with her family. However, she had decided she wanted out and desired to live an honest life. This aspect made me feel for her and cheer her on in her goal to break free from this life. However, she was also cynical and detached. These aspects made it hard for me to connect with and cheer for her character. There were many other angles that made this storyline not what it initially appeared to be. This kept me guessing! Both women are drawn to Robert Langford, a gentleman also on board and who is Caroline’s old friend. What did you feel about Robert’s character and his connection to both women? BECKY: He was quite the charmer and I enjoyed his part in this story. I imagine him as a young Robert Redford. There is a little bit of everything in this story so I think it would appeal to many different readers. It is time to sail away from this ocean story and move on to The Winter Sister by Megan Collins. A mystery that will take on the path of a teenager that goes missing and three days later her body is found.
