!

We are excited to host a Provincial newsletter and with the support of the Provincial community would encourage everyone to share this with anyone involved in the game and sign up using the Soccer Nova Scotia website.

!

Thanks again and I hope you find the resources helpful with your involvement in soccer.

Mike Whyatt! Director of Coaching

The purpose of this newsletter is to share the latest coaching and player specific information related to coaching education, LTPD best practice & player opportunities.

Our objective is to help elevate the level of coaching in the Province by providing educational resources, coaching opportunities and the latest hot topics trending across the world.

As coaches we have a tremendous impact on players’ lives and we need to make sure that our

influence is as positive as possible. One of the ways of doing this is through continuing education. Developing a coaching philosophy, mastering specific coaching competencies, and implementing this knowledge into our daily coaching programs are just a few examples of how we can assure we are providing the best possible guidance to our players. This newsletter is the first step in sharing the latest information with you.

! Regional Training Centre I.D Camp 2014 An overview of the SNS U12 I.D Camp to select those players for the Provincial U13 Program

Highlight With over 120 players, 60 male and 60 female. In addition, there were 39 Coaches with 14 of them being Junior Coaches that are present or past Provincial players.

Setting the Scene On August 19th, 20th & 21st the Province’s best players at U12 on both the male and female sides attended a three day camp at Mainland Common to work with a vast majority of those coaches who are shaping and developing players across Nova Scotia.

The format of the camp is to divide the 120 players in attendance in to eight teams, who will then receive seven sessions (electronic copies available soon at www.soccers.ns.ca) around the theme of ‘Soccer IQ’ looking at players to display, when in possession of the ball, game awareness by evaluating solutions and executing the one with the best result.

Players Experience “I thought the camp was a good learning experience and felt challenged competing against a lot of good players. I was really scared on the first day, but when I got on the field, my butterflies went away. One of my favourite things were meeting all the players and coaches. I already knew most of the girls from playing against them but enjoyed making new friendships”.

“I really liked the camp last week. It was a lot of fun and I learned a lot. I thought the level of soccer was high and I really enjoyed working with new coaches.

The best part of the camp was when we were able to play full field. It was really fun”.

Avery McKinnon - Cape Breton

11-aside Format In addition to the sessions, the players got the opportunity to participate in six 9v9 games and two 11v11 games. This was the first time the majority of the players will have experienced 11-aside and with the introduction of a new light size 5 ball, allowed the players to display their qualities with the ambition of being invited for the final selection camp to participate in the SNS U13 Provincial pro-

“I thought the camp was a good learning experience and felt challenged competing against a lot of good players”.

The Women’s EXCEL Program: DEVELOPS A NEW CANADIAN SOCCER DNA

DEBATE: Win Playing Badly or Lose Playing Well?

A Review of the High Performance Programs: REX, Provincial & RTC

Most top managers will tell you they’d rather play badly and win than not win at all. But should youth soccer coaches take the same stance? Would you rather your team played well and lost a match, or played badly and won?

Coach Interview

There have been many games that I have been involved with that I have said “it wasn’t pretty but I will take the win”. While this comment applies to an individual game once in a while it certainly is not a way to base a successful program. As coaches we are responsible for the development of our players to ensure the sport is always moving forward.

Player Interview What is Physical Literacy and how can it help our Players Best Practice - Active Start Club under the Spotlight

We meet this responsibility by teaching them the correct principles of play and how to act while on the field in the face of competition and sometimes adversity. Some go on to say if we teach them to play well, then the results will look after themselves. That brings up a whole other question in whether we should be worried about results at all!!
