French Quarter Public LibraryFall 2011 PROGRAM: Stacks, Reading Areas, Community Room, Gallery, Media Center, Administration, & Cafe. SITE: In the French Quarter of New Orleans. On a L-shaped site with street frontages on two sides.

Commercial Density and Core of French Quarter

library site

DESIGN: After analyzing site conditions, 3 zones were found in the urban fabric of French Quarter, commercial, public, and residential. The site bridges these 3 zones. Appying the “threshold to the design concept led to a 3-part organizational strategy, courtyard, public, and private areas. The innermost zone is the courtyard, which is the most active place in the library, similar to the way that courtyards are used throughout the French Quarter. The courtyard is wrapped by the public zone which consists of the main reading areas and circulation. The outermost zone is the private, which consists of the library stacks and other administrative programs. The facade acts as the threshold to the library. Use of the motorized louver systems maximizes the environmental performance, and creates a highly dynamic facade.

3D Painting Representation

Fall 2009

DESIGN: Representational analysis of “Glasses, Newspaper, and Wine Bottle by Juan Gris. Through multiple model studies, a scheme utilizing three layers of depth through vertical shifts was created based on the composition of painting.

Pimp My Studio

Spring 2010

DESIGN: To enhance the studio environment, I proposed to redesign the HVAC in studio. By weaving the heating, cooling, humidity control, and air purifying ducts, the HVAC system becomes a sculptual element in the studio. Red ducts also act as a magnetic pin up boards for student work.

Performing Arts Center PROGRAM: Library, lecture hall, theater, and art gallery. SITE: Zimple Quad at Tulane University, New Orleans. Situated on a corner of campus at two major streets.

Spring 2010

DESIGN: “The view is the main idea behind the project as it relates to the urban fabric and surrounding landscape of the Arts Center. From the outside, the building frames the art within, while the views from inside change throughout the time of day and seasons. Rigorous site analysis helped determinine the best views to frame, as well as informing the placement of landscaping that enhances the views and to create user friendly landscape.

Residential Renovation

Soniat Street, New Orleans, LA

Spring Interiors was hired to do a total renovation of this house in Uptown New Orleans. The house is located in the hisotric district, so we had to keep the exterior of building as is. The client has a extensive art collections, and contemporary taste. To highlight his art collections and to enhance the spatial quality, the furnitures have a low and simple profile. For window treatments, we used motorized blind system from Hunter Douglas, which keeps out the harsh New Orleans sun while still bringing in lots of natural light.

Guest Suite: Client had existing furnitures and paintings that he wanted to keep in this space. We consulted to pick a wall color, and to renovate the guest bathroom. The bathroom vanity mimics the minimal furniture profiles throughout the home, and travertine flooring and shower wall creates coherent space. A local artist used a faux finish on the wall to create a tiled look.

Son’s Bedroom (on right page): Our goal was to create a chic men’s room with taste. This bathroom also has a door that’s connected to his father’s office, so we tried to satisfy both son and father’s needs.

The powder room was the fun project! The client already had the vanity and vanity miror ordered from a local vendor when we took on the project. Our goal was for this vanity to be the highlight of the room. We designed the housing/bench, which hosts the BueWorld wall fountain. The local faux-finish artist painted the four sides of wall to create the running water texture, that tied the whole room together.

The “M” Bar is a “martini” bar, that is located in downtown Baton Rouge. It is made up of a bar, sitting area, office, and a space for bands to play music. The challenge of this project was that the space is very narrow and long, with an existing brick wall on one side. The owners wanted to provide a space for young professionals in Baton Rouge where people can enjoy their time after work with a martini in a cozy and chic space.

One of the large scale commercial projects that we worked on. The City Bar is made up of two large bars, kitchen, dining area, sitting area, darts area, VIP area, stage, DJ booth, and restrooms. This space is in a stripmall unit, which used be a local restaurant. To bring life back to the space, we worked with a local metal smith to design the bar height tables and a local lighting designer to locate all the lighting. We also used an innovative wallpaper company in the VIP room and lady’s restroom, which gave glam to the space. The City Bar opened in the summer of 2009.
