Welcome Milapfest is the UK’s Indian Arts Development Trust. With 27 years of experience in Indian arts performance, education and artist development, the organisation now brings music students an immersive retreat to learn from outstanding teachers, explore your own talent and broaden your musical horizons. Milapfest has developed a programme of Indian music training that is unique worldwide, and mirrors our successful Dance India International Summer School. Students benefit from intensive training and practice sessions, lecture demonstrations and the evening performances of Milapfest’s INDIKA festival. All of this takes place at the beautiful Creative Campus of Liverpool Hope University, in Great Britain’s wonderful musical and maritime city – Liverpool! Music India is open to students of all backgrounds, as long as you are trained to intermediate or advanced level in Indian Classical Music, or for the Discover Indian Music course, in any musical style. A structured course of 5 days of morning and afternoon sessions focusing on new ragas. with a focus on the background, scales and moods of the music, and a chance to learn a new piece of music in each, this is an intensive and enjoyable musical retreat for Hindustani music trained students or performers. Led by maestro performer and composer Rakesh Chaurasia, this is a chance to add to your knowledge and performance skills.
Bringing together instrumentalists and vocalists, with a separate strand for flute, the Carnatic Music programme gives students 5 days of sessions in 5 different themes or ragas. Each morning features an introduction to the theme of the day, and opportunities to learn about the scales, emotions and background of the subject. Each afternoon, one piece of music in that raga is taught to students, with an example of a recording or performance of that piece of music, the chance to learn about the composition, and the processes behind developing improvisation and performance skills.

For advanced level mridangists, a special 3 day course on learning, practice, improvisation and theory is combined with the chance to learn compositions too.
Open to musicians from any musical genre, this is a chance explore contemporary Indian music with an emphasis on its fundamentals, compositions and nuances. Through the course, participants will have the opportunity to weave Indian music into their own experience, and to appreciate the background and trends in the genre. Discover Indian Music is a fascinating 3 day exploration for music students, aspiring composers, performers or teachers of any genre.

For members of the National Youth Orchestra for Indian Music, Samyo, Music India offers an intensive 7 day course of orchestra skills, individual training, composition and performance training. To prepare orchestra members for future concerts, and give them advanced performance skills, a combination of Music India Gurus, coordinated by Conductor Gaurav Mazumdar, will offer a variety of skills based sessions, including the chance to learn and develop your own creative skills. Members of the orchestra will also get focused instrumental or vocal training from members of the Music India faculty.

Tarang Ensemble Course 12 – 19 August Tarang members will be led on a course of individual training and discovery that nurtures their own musical performance skills, improvisation and composition. Preparing them for touring concerts in the future, it will be a combined course of ensemble training, individual training and composition training. Members of the ensemble will also get focused instrumental or vocal training from members of the Music India faculty.

Fee Payment Terms and Conditions Limited bursaries are available, based on specific criteria. Pleaase contact us for further information on the available schemes. Fees may be paid in three instalments; an early bird discount of £30 will be applied to the first instalment if received before 15th June 2012. Please contact us to arrange an instalment payment plan. Please note that fees may be paid in other currencies such as Euros, USD or Canadian Dollars. The amount should be equivalent to the fees stated above after currency conversion, plus additional £5 should be paid for oversees bank transfer. Fees should be paid by electronic bank transfer only. Fees can be paid in interest free instalments between March and July 2012 on dates mutually agreed Fees are NOT refundable unless the training programme is cancelled by Milapfest Full fees must be paid by 31 July 2012.
Terms and Conditions Milapfest reserves the right to substitute the teaching faculty advertised or alter the programme, without prior notice to the participant in the event of unforeseen circumstances. Milapfest reserves the right to refuse participant admission to its course without explanation to the participant. Participants will lose their right to continue participation if they engage in unacceptable conduct. While all reasonable precautions and information will be provided for participants to ensure a safe working environment, Milapfest shall not accept responsibility for loss of property or personal injury during the course or outside of teaching hours. Milapfest has a Child Protection Policy to ensure the safety of all children. Participants must make sure that they are physically fit to attend the course as they will be involved in at least 8 hours of training each day including dance and physical fitness. Accomplished, responsible youngsters between the ages of 12-16 may be admitted to Music-India on the recommendation of their teachers (in a separate letter attached to the Application), and on the complete understanding of the youngster’s parent/guardian that Milapfest does not and cannot undertake their especial supervision inside or outside of programmed sessions. The admission will be facilitated if a responsible, co-resident adult (including a participant or tutor) takes charge of their conduct, participation and wellbeing for the duration of Music-India.
