Neil Fleming After Georges Braque Glass of Absinthe 1911 Title: After Georges Braque Glass of Absinthe 1911, 2012 Medium: Watercolour Dimensions: 38.5 x 57 cm
“What I produce is what I enjoy and if others find it so then I am happy to share it with them.” Neil Fleming has had a long standing love of drawing, sketching and painting since childhood. A late starter into the art world, since retirement Fleming has had some formal instruction, purely at workshops with Tony Smibert in Tasmania and Steve Hederics locally in Sunraysia but remains an amateur and will enjoy to stay that way.

MAYOR’S MESSAGE It is with much pleasure that I welcome all locals and visitors to our vibrant rural city for the 2012 Jazz, Food and Wine Festival.
The Mildura Jazz, Food and Wine Festival is one of the major events on our spring calendar and is now in its 33rd year. The event showcases so much of what makes our region a wonderful place to live and to visit. The Festival celebrates all our city has to offer and reaffirms Mildura’s reputation as Victoria’s Food Bowl. This year will be no exception with top quality produce and fine wines again on show, at a number of our many fine restaurants and wineries. The event also brings together traditional and mainstream jazz. A fine array of musicians, bands and traditional jazz ensembles feature in the 2012 Festival program. The ever popular Street Party will again be in full swing, along with the Queen of Boogie, Jan Preston and the Sam Leske Trio. Patrons will also be able to enjoy a paddleboat cruise to Trentham Estate and engage with a traditional jazz jam at the Mildura RSL. If you’re visiting the region I trust you will
have an enjoyable stay and encourage you to experience some of the many other wonderful dining, cultural and tourist attractions our city boasts. The Jazz, Food and Wine Festival continues to entrench itself as an important part of our region’s character and provides a quality experience. I wish everyone involved yet another enjoyable and successful event, with the wish to return again next year. Cr John Arnold Mayor Mildura Rural City Council

Excitement is building about the young Sydney band ‘Beaten Bodies’ who are set to bring down the house at the new jazz @ the mildura club with their smouldering fusion sound and sexy vocals. Their first single released in September 2012 went straight to JJJs play list and we can see why. Artsmildura is an independent not for profit community organisation which for 18 years has been presenting festivals and other arts events in Mildura and the surrounding region. Currently we present five festivals each year bringing the best artists, musicians, writers and performers from all over the world and providing opportunities for talented local artists. Each year Artsmildura raises the funds for hundreds of art events. We gratefully acknowledge the support of our many sponsors and volunteers and in particular our principle funding bodies: Arts Victoria, Mildura Rural City Council and La Trobe University, and our principle Jazz Festival sponsors Mildura City and PRIME TV. Hundreds of businesses and individuals contribute to Artsmildura events throughout the year - please support our sponsors so we can continue to support this community - see inside back page for details. Perhaps more Indie than Jazz but with a wild horn section the band mixes dirty, down low grooves and up-tempo rhythms to produce a vintage sound like no other. Vocalist Marli Wilde leads the band with a sound reminiscent of Nina Simone and Amy Winehouse. The band is prolific and progressive, their live shows energetic and encompassing.

‘Easily one of the most entertaining bands on the scene today. Absolutely mindblowing.’ ‘The most exciting dixieland band I have ever heard... You don’t hear traditional New Orleans material played the way Shirazz does nowadays.’ 3BBR FM Shirazz is a young six-piece Melbourne trad jazz and dixieland band, specialising in classic hot jazz of the 20s and 30s, and has been fast gaining a reputation as one of Melbourne’s premier jazz bands. Shirazz plays classic trad jazz as it was meant to be played. With hot solos, driving rhythms and tight arrangements, a set from Shirazz is a step back in time, to a
jumping New Orleans dance hall where fast, hot tunes intersect with swinging standards and laid-back Louisiana street beats. With the odd original tune and some re-imagined pop classics, Shirazz should be enjoyed irresponsibly, and in excess. Shirazz was formed in 2009 exploding onto the scene with roof-raising performances at the Echuca and Moe Jazz festivals in early 2010. Shirazz has performed at the Barham, Phillip Island, Grampians, Jamieson and Thredbo jazz festivals, and many Jazz clubs across Victoria. In 2010 they released their first full-length album, The Window, and their newest album, Enjoy Responsibly, was released in February 2012. www.shirazz.com.au
don mayne trio “Favourites of the 2011 Back Lane Jazz, the home-grown Mildura band - Don Mayne Trio - are back with their irresistible jazz sound.” The Don Mayne Trio first met each other whilst studying Jazz Studies at Adelaide University. Their repertoire consists of the classic and mainstream tunes of the 30s and 40s right up to modern tunes and original compositions. All three members are educators in local schools and are passionate about bringing the next generation of jazz musicians from the classroom out onto the stage. Don Mayne - Trumpet Ben Brown - Bass Luke Peak - Drums

the sam leske trio The Sam Leske Trio features three of Adelaide’s top young musicians. The group formed whilst the members were all studying at the Elder Conservatorium at the University of Adelaide. Now that uni days are over, the group still plays regularly together in many different styles of music (rock, pop, jazz, musicals) and have formed the rhythm section for Adelaide bands ‘The Belle - Phonics’ and ‘Chank’ not to mention supporting varying artists in their own right. The trio are delighted to be back at the 2012 Mildura Jazz Food and Wine Festival playing their favourite jazz, blues and latin standards, along with some of trio leader Sam’s original tunes, from his acoustic album ‘Waiting’ (2011). lazy eye Grounded in the blues, Australian band Lazy Eye present a music both contemporary and rich in musical tradition, credible and relevant. Based in Adelaide, and made immediately recognisable by the strains of his Hammond organ accompanying the incredibly soulful voice of Evan Whetter and award winning guitarist Erica Graf, all set to the back beat of drumming legend Mario Marino. Expressing a raw emotional edge, their original material runs the gamut of life
experience. Reflecting influences including B.B. King, Howling Wolf, Hendrix and Led Zeppelin, melded with clear R&B leanings and all the main stream influence one might expect growing up in modern Australian culture. Equally at home in a blues club as on a concert stage, Lazy Eye deliver the goods providing a high energy live show that is both moving and dance inspiring, taking their place in the vanguard of the Australian blues and roots scene.

keys, bass and drums, and a four-piece horn section, including trumpet, trombone, alto and tenor sax. Emerging female vocalist, Marli Wilde, leads the band with a sound and charisma reminiscent of Nina Simone and Amy Winehouse. What makes the Bodies unique is their diverse repertoire, ranging from milk bar ballads to backstreet hip-hop and penthouse neo-soul. The band is prolific and progressive,
their live shows energetic and encompassing; the alchemy of the universal beat and the personal body. The debut single ‘My Mantra’ released September 10th, preceding the release of their self-titled E.P in October/November. Beaten Bodies will follow this with an extensive Australian East Coast tour over summer and a string of shows throughout Victoria and South Australia in January and February 2013. www.facebook.com/BeatenBodies

dixie street jazz band “The irresistibly happy sounds of Dixie Street invite you to experience the ‘moment of performance’ where the collective improvisation of the group provides that special sound of surprise that can only be experienced live.” Dixie Street is a band of thoroughly decent, well-ripened larrikins who formed an ensemble from some of the very best musicians from various States in Australia. When Piano, Sousaphone, Banjo, Drums, Trombone, Trumpet and Reeds get together, the result is the nerves in your feet twitch, whilst some rare musical gems from around 1900 simply grab your whole body and give it a good shake. The musicians bring to their performances ample quantities of good humour which overflows to their audiences, young and old. There are a number of vocalists who also add their colour to each performance. Jazz exists primarily at the ‘moment of performance’. You can make a sound recording of it, and transcribe the notes onto a score. But the next live performance won’t sound like that record or that score. Beyond its historical significance, the music 18
itself is sometimes punchy, full of flair and subtle when required. The band has delighted audiences for many years both overseas and within Australia with their extensive Traditional / Dixieland Jazz repertoire.
and Sigmund Spaeth (1900), Joseph Lamb and Nick La Rocca (1908) and some of the very best Australian compositions from Bob Barnard, Alex Frame, Roger Bell, and Ade Mondsborough.
The band repertoire spans the golden years of early jazz from 1900 to 1930. Clarence Williams, Jelly Roll Morton, King Oliver and Louis Armstrong are featured along with exciting rare tunes from composers such as Neil Moret (1901), James O‘Dea (1903)

maryborough traditional jazz ensemble “The Maryborough Traditional Jazz Ensemble is known for its happy, foot tapping music irresistible to trad jazz fans and dancers alike.” The Maryborough Traditional Jazz Ensemble, always a huge hit at Mildura’s Jazz Food & Wine Festival, are back this year with their happy foot tapping music, playing traditional jazz, and also lots of standard tunes with traditional jazz flavour. Originally formed in 1987 the band has played at various jazz festivals and venues all over Victoria, New South Wales, and South Australia. The three original members are Reuben Tyers on keyboard, Ken Collins on trumpet and vocals, Col Hutcheon on trombone and vocals. Bryan Hodges on drums joined the band in 1995 and Paul Emery on bass joined in 2008. Barrie Currie on reeds and vocals is the latest member to join the band.
