n David H Freedman’s article “The Worst Patients in the World,” (The Atlantic, July’19), he blames the American healthcare consumer for the failing and absurdly expensive U.S. system because we are fat, lazy, demanding, and disobedient. He says, “Americans are hypochondriacs, yet we skip our checkups. We demand drugs we don’t need, and fail to take the ones we do. No wonder the U.S. leads the world in health spending,” and “We ought to consider the possibility that if we exported Americans to those other countries, their systems might end up with our costs and outcomes.” But that’s not true and IT’S NOT YOUR FAULT! Unlike every other country, we ingest GMOs at every meal and don’t even have the right to know if it is in our food. No other developed country allows them into the food supply. Unlike every other country, the U.S. farming industry, in conjunction with Monsanto/Bayer, uses millions of tons of Roundup glyphosate to desiccate their crops (lentils, peas, soybeans, corn, flax, rye, triticale, buckwheat, millet, canola, sugar beets, potatoes, sunflowers, wheat and oats) to increase yields and profits. According to the Environmental Working Group (June 2019), 21 of 25 General Mills oatbased products popular with children contain dangerous amounts of the Roundup herbicide - including many varieties of Cheerios. I applaud vaccine science that brought us safety against polio, measles, mumps and rubella. But I cringe with mistrust when the CDC says my infant/toddler should be injected with 117 mercury or aluminum-laden vaccines including those for sexuallytransmitted diseases. Decades of trust in the American Medical Association, big Pharma, the university research system, vaccine manufacturers and industry-beholden government agencies like the FDA, EPA and CDC have left Americans sicker than ever, with mystery illnesses that didn’t exist 50 years ago. (Steven Frank on page 18 will explain how big money has hijacked science and that “studies” don’t tell us what you think they do!) For instance, Pfizer is the biggest drug company in the world. On June 7, 2019, Washington Post reporter Christopher Rowland broke the news that Pfizer had learned that their arthritis drug, Enbrel, seemed to reduce risk of Alzheimer’s up to 64 percent. Yet, with Enbrel approaching the end of patent protection, Pfizer “opted against further investigation and chose not to make the data public.” They would prefer to hide data than share it with the world if they can’t directly profit. In truth, there is hope. American historian Daniel Boorstin said, “The greatest enemy of knowledge is not ignorance, it is the illusion of knowledge.” We have been fed this illusion, but there is hope because you read this magazine – and others like it. The voices that bring light to this ignorance are voices of truth, compassion and healing. Know that your illness isn’t you being fat, lazy, disobedient or demanding; your body is simply responding to the illusion we’ve been taught. It’s time to pull back the curtain. Digesting Life with Body-Mind Connection By Alexandra R. Johnson, MD For a healthy body, we need to eat foods that are fresh, nourishing, and offer a range of nutrients to sustain our physical vitality, enabling cells and organ systems to function in harmony. When digestion is out of balance, we pay closer attention to what we eat and how much, and get help if needed. The same applies to daily perceptions and interactions. What does it mean to digest the multitude of stimuli each day brings our way? How do we become cognizant of what’s needed for balance in dealing with relationships, responsibilities, and world events? It’s possible to approach life with the attitude that all events can offer as much nutrition as food on our table, if we know how to digest them. Most of the time, body, mind, and feelings function separately, so we aren’t connected to our essential nature, which is the source of meaning. When we relate to the world from an experience of wholeness, rather than of separation, we reconnect to our essential nature. The ability to bring body, mind, and feelings together creates a foundation to meet events in the moment, with less reactivity and more ability to respond productively. Breema is a three-fold practice that fosters body-mind connection through Breema bodywork, Self-Breema exercises, and the Nine Principles of Harmony. In his book, “Real Health Means Harmony with Existence,” Jon Schreiber wrote, “When a tree has vital roots, it can regenerate and become healthy, even if its branches break. But if the roots are dried out, a broken branch may cause the tree to become sick. The body operates according to the same principle. When it’s connected to its roots, it has more ability to become and remain healthy.” By giving and receiving Breema in the supportive atmosphere of a class, we can have a direct experience of bodymind connection. That creates a base for having nurturing relationships with one’s body, oneself, and all of life in any situation. Self-limiting fear—of others, of unexpected or undesirable outcomes—falls to the background, replaced with a grounded energy, clarity, and sense of meaning and purpose. Then we can digest the events we encounter and use them to support a truly nourishing and harmonious life. Alexandra Johnson, MD, and Jon Schreiber, Director of the Breema Center, will be presenting Breema at the Shambhala Center in Boulder Aug 9-11. See ad page 12.

Sleep Better and Feel Social Coaching for Quirky Kids Happier With Probiotics In further confirmation of the importance of the gut-brain axis, 18 Italian students at the University of Verona from ages 18 to 33 that took a freezedried mixture of four probiotics for six weeks experienced less depression, anger and fatigue compared to a control group of 15 that consumed a placebo. The positive effects continued, as discovered in follow-up testing three weeks later. The probiotics group also slept better. The probiotic bacteria blend of 4 billion colonyforming units included Lactobacillus fermentum, Lactobacillus rhamnosus, Lactobacillus plantarum and Bifidobacterium longum.

Quirky kids. We all know at least one. Some kids’ quirks are endearing and cute, but others keep them on the outskirts of the social world- being lonely at recess, missing birthday party invites, or only connecting with adults. Kids with social learning challenges can be frustrated and anxious, living in a world that doesn’t seem predictable or logical. Parenting quirky kids has its own challenges - a smart kid who doesn’t notice when they are rude or hurtful, or lessons don’t stick. Maybe you feel judged by other parents who don’t understand. Your kiddo might benefit from a social coaching program. While many consider good grades a predictor of success, social skills are equally important. According to the National Association of School Psychologists, good social skills are critical for successful functioning in life. These skills enable them to know what to say, how to make safe choices, and how to behave in diverse situations. Social coaching focuses on the thinking behind the doing so that kids learn to be “social detectives” and are able to join a group at recess, turn bossy behavior into leadership skills, and relate to their peers to be part of the community. Once kids understand what clues to look for and what is relevant in the social world, they are able to engage, build self-confidence and connect with others. Our brains are built to connect with others, and reducing barriers to connection increases positive feelings and overall mental wellness. To learn more about how social coaching can help your kiddo become his best self, contact Breann at Successfully Social. breann@successfullysocialco.com. See ad page 30.

With the aid of a new infrared camera technology called optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA), early Alzheimer’s disease can be detected by checking the back of the eyes for weakened and decreased blood vessels, reports a new study. Northwestern Medicine researchers reached the conclusion by comparing the vessels in the eyes of 32 people that exhibited the forgetfulness typical of early-stage Alzheimer’s with those of another 32 people with normal cognitive

abilities. The vascular changes were detected non-invasively, without the need for dyes or expensive MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scans. The technology quantifies capillary changes in great detail and with unparalleled resolution, making the eye an ideal mirror for what is going on in the brain. Early detection of Alzheimer’s is critical because existing therapies are more effective if they are started before extensive brain damage and cognitive decline have occurred.

A Friendly Reminder to Close the Lid Before Flushing According to a study conducted by the Microbiology Department of Leeds General Infirmary in the UK (Jan 2012), C. difficile bacteria were commonly spread in hospital bathrooms without toilet seat covers. Bacteria were found in bathroom air 90 minutes after the toilet was flushed. Considerable contamination was found in household bathrooms as well. Exposure to C. Difficile causes severe diarrhea and inflammation of the colon. Dr. Oz discussed this topic on his September 18, 2009 show. Research shows that each toilet flush creates an unseen mist that can travel up to 15 feet in all directions; microdroplets of toilet water land on everything within the flush zone, including toothbrushes, cosmetics and drinking cups; and, this unseen mist can stay in the air for two hours where it can be easily inhaled; and these pathogens can live on surfaces for up to one week. Water glasses and toothbrushes should be stored in your medicine cabinet. Close the lid for good hygiene! Sharon Roulhac of Cosmopolitan Colonics LLC can be reached at 720-451-3953. See ad page 11.

People suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which includes emphysema and chronic bronchitis, can breathe easier by taking the Chinese medicinal fungus Cordyceps sinensis, a new meta-analysis shows. Researchers at the Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine conducted a review of 15 high-quality studies that involved 1,238 COPD patients and found that cordyceps significantly improved lung function, exercise endurance and quality of life with no report of any serious adverse effects. Cordyceps, which is said to relax and open the airways, has long been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine as an anti-asthmatic, expectorant and cough suppressant.

5 Keys for Healthy Relationships One of the biggest indicators of human health and happiness is that of having a healthy intimate relationship. These five areas are vital to healthy, happy relationships: 1. Trust. Both partners feel an implicit trust of the other person, because they both know the other person practices personal integrity. Trust is not something that has to be proven or earned. 2. Personal growth. There is enough space in the relationship that each person can explore themselves and their passions, and evolve accordingly. 3. Space for Change. Longevity is not the marker of a successful relationship at the expense of the health and happiness of those involved. If the relationship structure needs to evolve or change over time, there is space to honor that.

4. Communication. Communication and relationship skills aren’t taught in schools, and so many of us struggle in relationships as a result. 5. Self-Responsibility. You are responsible for your own thoughts, feelings and behaviors. Full stop. Blame and shame, or “he/she should do xyz if they really loved me” has no place in a healthy relationship. In the article "Good Genes are Nice, but Joy is Better," Robert Waldinger said, “The people who were the most satisfied in their relationships at age 50 were the healthiest at age 80.” Erin Celeste is a Life Coach specializing in mindset and skill mastery to help people create amazing relationships. Too Blue

Algae Loss Colors Ocean The world’s oceans may be getting bluer, thanks to climate change. The effect is more likely to be detected by satellites than Earthbound people, and is caused by the depletion of marine phytoplankton as seawater warms. A new study from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology published in the journal Nature Communications predicts that more than 50 percent of the oceans’ collective 140 million square miles of surface area will likely be affected by 2100. Marine ecologist and leader of the study Stephanie Dutkiewicz says, “These microscopic organisms live in the water and are the base of the marine food chain. If there are less of them in it, the water will be slightly bluer.” Phytoplankton serves as a food source for small sea creatures that are eaten by fish, squid and shellfish. If phytoplankton populations dip too low, vital fisheries in certain areas could be decimated.

Ireland Declares Climate Emergency The Republic of Ireland is the third country worldwide to declare a climate emergency, with both the government and opposition parties agreeing to an amendment to a climate action report. “We’re reaching a tipping point in respect of climate deterioration,” says Climate Action Minister Richard Bruton. “Things will deteriorate very rapidly unless we move very swiftly, and the window of opportunity to do that is fast closing.” The UK governments of Wales and Scotland have also declared climate emergencies. Suggested responses include limiting oil and gas exploration, and issuing an additional biodiversity emergency measure.

Action Alert

Greenhouse Gases Hit Landmark Certainty that we are facing a climate crisis today and not just in the future was reached in May through an alarming milestone in carbon dioxide levels. Data from the Mauna Loa Observatory, in Hawaii, shows that the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere reached 415 parts per million, the highest ever recorded. However, environmental organizations charge that ominous news like this is not being communicated to the public to the degree warranted. While the CBS, NBC and ABC nightly TV news reports combined devoted nearly 18 minutes of coverage to the birth of the royal baby between May 6 and 12, airtime regarding climate change and extinction during the same period only amounted to one minute and 21 seconds, and only on CBS. For more information and to get involved, including signing a petition to demand that the media cover the climate crisis and extinction more frequently and in greater depth, visit Tinyurl.com/ClimateCrisisCampaign.

D

o you ever feel like you are being led in a certain direction? It seems like everything I read lately leads me toward the practice of transmuting fear with love; giving light to the dark instead of resist, avoid, and numb. Giving love to fear is antithetical to what I’ve been doing for most of my adult life. Let’s take, for instance, anxiety (a symptom of fear) over publishing my first book. It’s very hard to put yourself out there into judgement and criticism, as anyone who has ever posted a divisive opinion on Facebook knows. What do I do with that anxiety when it crops up, even though part of me knows deep-down that everything will be all right? I offer myself holistic remedies like aromatherapy, prayer, a walk or a nap, often trying to talk myself out of it. I try to power through it. The darkness of fear in any form is powerful, though. Sometimes when it’s running me and I can’t get ahead of it, I make a beeline for an adult beverage or a rescue med. Yet, running away from these fears haven’t worked. Has it worked for you? Maybe temporarily, but then I fear the anxiety coming back. I fear the next migraine, the next tweaking of my lower back that will not only be painful, but also temporarily disabling. Next time, try softening into the pain and instead of the usual habitual patterns, sit with it. Let it be what it’s going to be. Treat your pain and suffering like a small child – don’t beat it into submission with overthinking or pretend it doesn’t exist. Acknowledge that you feel it and see if you get any intuition about the root cause, or even a solution that you hadn’t thought of before. If the opposite of fear is love, then giving compassion and love to yourself and your suffering may just be a way to break free from the cycle of resistance and help ease your suffering. Wendy Coleman, founder of LA Urban Farms, works with chefs, resorts, hotels, universities and corporate clients to set up aeroponic tower gardens, such as these kale and lettuce crops.

Cultivate the City manages numerous gardens for clients around Washington, D.C., from elementary school gardens where kids learn to grow, cook and eat nutritious food to corporate gardens inside a new office building for lender Fannie Mae’s employee café. One of its crown jewels is a 6,500-square-foot rooftop garden on the Nationals Park baseball stadium, where edible flowers end up in cocktails and organic produce feeds fine diners and VIP ticket holders.

Yet, enterprising green thumbs across the country are bringing the farm back to plate’s reach, growing hyperlocal food in backyards, on rooftops, through indoor farms and more. City farming reconnects urbanites to their food sources while bettering the environment, communities, diets and health. Urban agriculture, harkening back to the Victory Gardens planted to ward off food shortages during World War I and II, is nothing new. in this locavore resurgence, noteworthy pioneers are forging a path to organic urban agriculture on a commercial scale—tapping into new technologies and markets, and turning challenges like dealing with space constraints into fresh opportunities.

A View From the Roofs

Take Niraj Ray, whose company Cultivate the City is working to transform urban food deserts in the nation’s capital into thriving local food systems. “We want to get more people interested in growing their own food and show them how they can grow more with less square footage through vertical gardens and sustainable techniques like [soil-less] hydroponic systems,” says Ray.

Health, Hope & Happiness

Ray grew his business organically, fueled by passion and curiosity, rather than any horticultural background. “I grew up in NYC, where I had nothing to grow on. When I moved to Florida for grad school, I had a huge backyard to play around with,” says Ray. Like many other urban farms, Cultivate the City offers a seasonal farm subscription known as a community supported agriculture (CSA) program that allows city dwellers to buy directly from local producers. Ray’s rooftop greenhouse, located on top of a local hardware store that sells his edible plants at retail, offers all the fixings for a healthy, diverse diet: hydroponic towers of leafy greens, trays of microgreens for corporate clients, specialty varieties of hot peppers for the company’s hot sauce and stacking cubes of an albino strawberry variety that Ray

By 2050, it’s estimated that 9 billion people will be living on the planet—7 billion in cities. “City planners need innovative solutions like vertical farming to feed the growing population. We can grow at scale, with minimum space and environmental impact,” says Wendy Coleman, who began her Californiabased business LA Urban Farms in 2013. Today, Coleman’s team works with chefs, resorts, hotels, universities, greenhouses and corporate clients like Google and Ikea to set up aeroponic tower gardens across the U.S. and Europe. With aeroponics, nutrient-enriched water is pumped through a garden tower to shower the roots of plants suspended in air. “It actually uses 90 percent less water than conventional growing, which is a huge benefit in a place like California, and avoids any kind of agricultural runoff,” says Coleman. Aeroponics and other innovative farm technologies are transforming spaces in cities across the U.S., reclaiming peripheral and idle spaces like alleys and warehouses to grow herbs and vegetables in abundance, using 90 percent less land by growing vertically, notes Coleman. “With our gardens, diners can see their food growing at their table; they get such a personal connection with their food. keeper John Coldwell, of Fort Lauderdale. Since this humble beginning in 2012 with a few backyard hives, Coldwell and his wife Teresa have been leading a movement to repurpose public land for “microapiaries” and provide apiary education for youth and adults throughout South Florida. Through their entity The Urban Beekeepers, the Coldwells offer beekeeping classes, consult with local governments, sell equipment and rescue “feral hives” to integrate into managed hives. They’ve worked successfully with parks, airports, golf clubs and country clubs to put honeybee habitats on site. Urban beekeeping works in synergy with city farms, as honeybees forage up to five miles for food, and in so doing pollinate a lot of crops. Seventy of the top 100 human food crops are pollinated by bees, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. “We often hear people say their

The FairShare CSA Coalition’s site (CSACoalition.org) offers an interactive Farm Search tool to find community supported agriculture (CSA) programs where city dwellers can subscribe to local farms and receive a share of the seasonal bounty. The American Community Garden Association (CommunityGarden.org) provides resources for finding, starting and managing community gardens. Local Harvest (LocalHarvest.org) has a searchable national directory of farmers’ markets, farms, CSAs and more. Have you ever heard of your local cooperative extension program? The USDA is trying to do a better job of raising public awareness of assistance that’s readily available and free of charge for farmers and home gardeners, especially now that it’s getting more funding. The 2018 Farm Bill provided increases for programs like the organic agriculture research and extension initiative programs, and the USDA is eager to see the constituents are making. garden is doing better than it has in years, thanks to the apiaries nearby,” says John Coldwell. The challenges of growing at scale are a recurrent theme among urban farmers. Ian Marvy, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) outreach specialist for the greater New York City area, ran his own urban farm, grossing six figures for 14 years. However, Marvy says most farmers growing in the city aren’t operating at a profitable scale or producing enough for everyone to eat local. Even so, locally grown produce is a booming market in New York City. Greenmarket, founded in 1976, operates more than 50 farmers’ markets, limited to vendors that grow within a 200-mile radius, some of whom take home five figures on a good day, says Marvy. Interest in growing at the community level has also mushroomed, adds Marvy, who estimates that 90 percent of the city’s more than 500 school gardens weren’t there 15 years ago when he started this work. “The USDA has a huge opportunity here and nationally to make cities more sustainable and feed more people. I’m really excited and committed to that,” he says. While urban agriculture efforts are sometimes criticized for catering to upper income residents that can afford to pay top dollar for specialty items like microgreens, many businesses and organizations are working on multiple fronts, with lucrative

Grow Ohio Valley takes an integrated approach to food sovereignty in Wheeling, West Virginia, and the Upper Ohio Valley. “This part of the Appalachian Rustbelt has lost much of its population, jobs and economic base over the last generation. We want to promote health and wellness through fresh food, while helping to transform the urban landscape from falling-down buildings and vacant lots into productive community assets,” says founder Danny Swan. The operation’s food hub aggregates produce from small local farmers, providing a guaranteed market for their produce and the opportunity to reach a larger market, usually only served by food grown thousands of miles away. The produce is supplemented by four urban farm sites run by the organization, including an apple orchard on the site of a demolished housing project.

Grow Ohio Valley also works to reach the “last-mile customers” that lack access to high-quality affordable produce via a mobile farmers’ market that goes to housing projects, senior communities and schools six days a week. Their latest project, the Public Market, is a retail location on Wheeling’s Main Street that will serve as a year-round farmers’ market. The organization is also building alliances between local farmers and healthcare providers through a project called The Farmacy. A partnership with a local free clinic, it targets people suffering from diabetes and other diseases linked to poor diets with a doctor’s prescription for organic produce offered free through the organization’s CSA. These urban agriculture pioneers are helping to not only grow food, but community, and are nurturing renewed connections to the Earth. City growing has so many benefits: decreasing packaging, costs and food miles traveled, making it easier to eat organic seasonal food and a more diverse diet. “The connection people feel when they plant seed and get to harvest the mature plant is transformative. Growing food is something we can all do to make a difference, for our health and the environment,” says Coleman. Connect with Washington, D.C. freelance writer April Thompson at AprilWrites.com.

The Evolution of NATURAL MEDICINE By Steven Frank

H

erbal and natural medicine have been traced back at least 10,000 years. It’s likely to have older roots than that (pun intended). Initially the roots, leaves and bark were boiled or chewed and packed into wounds. This lack of sanitary practice presented many problems, but the benefits were clear and the knowledge was passed on from generation to generation… because it helped. What we now call “modern medicine” has only been around a few hundred years, but in that time, technology and institutions of advanced learning have driven the capability and complexity to astounding heights. Yet, just like early forms of herbal medicine, there are problems with modern drug and surgery protocols. As our society has become more educated and health-conscious, many

18

have become more willing to incorporate some “old ways” into our toolbox of remedies. And herbal/natural methods for dealing with life’s common health issues often work better than the established allopathic treatments and with less adverse side-effects. Healers in the past often used a poultice to wrap herbs around a break or damaged tissues. We now have herbal hydrogels, lotions, and salves that can be simply applied to allow the constituents to reach the treatment area transdermally. This product evolution is still resting on age-old knowledge of Comfrey, Arnica and Plantain. Another important step in the evolution of herbal medicine can be seen in the productizing phase. How many times have you looked at shelves of herbs and tinctures wondering, “Which ones do

Health, Hope & Happiness

I need, and how do I use them?” Federal law prohibits the dissemination of information about what they do, how they do it and how to use it. The industry has responded intelligently by making products that are directed towards specific conditions. This allows the un-trained customer to simply pick up a natural product based upon their symptoms and still benefit. An expert has studied the art and put together everything you need into one product for sunburn, hemorrhoids, sore throat, infected wounds, leg cramps… you name it! Herbal combinations have become more sophisticated as many products not only address the symptoms, but also correct the cause, and help the body to heal as well. A mere 20 years ago, most natural products were single-plant tinctures. Most people didn’t know what to buy or how to use it. Now we have combo products from Oriental Medicine, Ayurveda, Western Herbology and plenty of exotics from tribes all over the globe — a true resurgence of remedies and a more wholistic treatment of conditions. PLANT-BASED MEDICINE

Traditional Herbal Support of Intense Athletic Activity nhancing athletic performance is of E paramount importance

to every coach, trainer and athlete. Eating right, proper hydration, sound muscle preparation techniques… all of these are standard fare for the athletes. But what can we do to prepare the body beyond the standard process? Isn’t there something that we can do to run a little faster, jump a little higher or push a little harder? With a synthesis of modern physiological insight and ancient herbal wisdom, we can prepare the body for exertion, enhance the physical output and improve recovery. We can do better… naturally. There are a number of herbs and berries that have been used throughout the ages by warriors, hunters and laborers to improve muscle function, reduce pain and aid in recovery. These herbs were sometimes ingested by chewing or drinking as a tea. Often times they were simply mashed up (macerated) and rubbed on the arms and legs. In modern times, we can make a powerful water-based decoction and easily apply the vital constituents of these herbs as a transdermal gel. In this manner, they are absorbed through the skin directly where they will be needed. Before any activity, there is a stretching and

warming-up phase of preparation. Witch Hazel has been used to increase the muscle fiber lubricity so that the body becomes supple. Native American Indians were known to rub the leaves on their legs before they ran off to deliver a message to another encampment. Lubricious muscles allow for more efficient exertion, engaging the whole muscle body. Well balanced and limber muscles reduce the chance of injury. Peppermint leaf increases circulation through the muscles and Juniper berries help to flush lactic acid. These functions ensure long-term stability of performance from the muscle by facilitating the flow of energy in and waste out. These three botanicals allow for better warm-up and more powerful work-out. While the athlete is competing, it is important for them to push beyond fatigue and beyond the pain of exertion. White Willow Bark acts as an analgesic alleviating the pain, Ginseng provides increased energy flow and Devil’s Claw maintains smooth joint function under pressure. These three herbs allow the athlete to push harder and hurt less. Of course after heavy exertion and competition, there will be muscle fiber damage, micro-tears in ligaments and tendons and bruising in muscles bodies. In order to facilitate the repair of these issues and minimize the recovery discomfort a few more herbs are in order. Any athlete knows the value of Arnica Montana as it reduces pain and improves healing. There are enzymes in

the Arnica that break-up micro-clots in the bruises allowing blood to more effectively deliver healing constituents through the micro-capillary bed. Comfrey has the most pronounced ability to repair damaged tissue. It contains allantoin which increases the activity level of the fibroblasts that lay-down repairative collagen. Certainly cramping can be an un-intended consequence of intense exertion. Sweet Marjoram relieves cramps that are caused when waste builds up faster than it can be removed from the area. These three herbs make the road from over-exertion to “readyto-run” a smooth and efficient transition. So one could make an herbal decoction of these botanicals and spray the liquid all over their muscles. The warm-up enhancement, output improvement and recovery support would clearly be a benefit beyond the standard process. It would certainly be a natural advantage in any athletic activity. But what if this wonderful assortment of botanicals already existed as an aqueous sports gel? Well… that would be one Honey of a Muscle Gel. In fact, we call it Muscle Honey. xz.

Hemp to the Rescue at Detox Sites

Cannabis is enjoying a renaissance of sorts, and one new application for hemp, the no-buzz industrial variety used in fabrics, oils and foods, is cleaning nuclear radiation from toxic soil and removing metals like cadmium, lead, mercury and other pollutants via phytoremediation. Allison Beckett, a cultivation expert at Marijuana. com, says, “Industrial hemp has been used in areas of high radiation, such as Fukushima, [in Japan,] with promising results. Not only does hemp pull toxic, heavy metals from the soil, it actually improves soil structure, making it usable as productive farmland again. Plus, hemp is a vigorous plant that absorbs CO2 rapidly, making it an encouraging solution to climate change.” Hemp phytoremediation has been used in Italy to clean up the small town of Taranto, where a steel plant has been leaking dioxin into the air and soil. The Pennsylvania Industrial Hemp Council and Lehigh University, in Bethlehem, are running a project to test the process in an arsenic-contaminated area in Upper Saucon Township that once harbored a zinc mine.

...continued from page 18 conjunction with the time-tested herbal wisdom has resulted in some truly fantastic natural remedies that are comprehensive and well beyond their historical roots. Starting in the 1880’s, traditional botanic-based apothecaries merged with chemical and dye companies to create and sell synthetic chemical creations. By the 1920s, pharmaceutical drugs blossomed into a very, very large business. And these big profits fueled lots of drug discovery, laboratory testing and clinical studies. While it was an important part of regulating and guiding this new practice of making powerful drugs in a lab, it influenced the way that physicians looked at remedies. Over just a few generations, allopathic physicians have turned their back on anything that has not been laboratoryderived, clinically studied and scientifically proven. They have thrown away thousands of years of observational knowledge by labeling it anecdotal, an old-wives’ tale, snake oil or unproven. Yet, the truth is not decided by decree, produced by testing, or even declared by a panel of experts. The truth simply is. Either a remedy works or it doesn’t. The testing merely demonstrates the truth to one who was not a direct observer. Clinical studies won’t tell you if a drug will work for you - it tells us whether it will work better than a placebo on a group of people. In any study, there are those who experience excellent results and those who experience nothing at all. The only way that a person will know if a treatment will work for them is to try it. Experiential knowledge. That’s where it all began. Most people are comfortable with experiential knowledge as long as they don’t think that a particular product or treatment will hurt them. And this is the next area that herbal medicine needs to see some evolution and growth. We need to be allowed to convey useful information about natural treatments directly to the customers. We need to help the next generation of doctors see the value in adopting natural health products into their practice. Finally, we need to end this fear-mongering which is being used by big pharma and the medical community to scare people away from trying natural medicine. As the next generation begins to take positions in government, the rules restricting our free speech will be changed. As more of this new generation moves through the traditional medical education system, the acceptance of these valuable tools will increase. But how do we wrestle the reins of disinformation and fear-mongering from the faceless, profit-driven, pharmaceutical corporations? That is the job of the people. We must work together to prepare the country for the evolution of natural medicine. Steven Frank is a Master Herbologist with Nature’s Rite. See ad page 19.

RASPBERRIES FIGHT CANCER

erries are known to contain more than one anti-cancer compound, but the star may be a particular category of polyphenols called “ellagitannins” that are most commonly referred to as “ellagic acid.” Ellagic acid is naturally found in many berries and some other foods, including strawberries, cherries, cranberries, blueberries, pomegranates, walnuts and pecans. But by far the highest density occurs in raspberries. Comprehensive studies done at the Medical University of South Carolina’s Hollings Cancer Institute in the 1990’s showed that the equivalent ellagic acid found in one cup of red raspberries per day can help prevent the development of cancer. Higher amounts were then proven capable of causing normal cell death (apoptosis) in existing cancer cells — especially for cancers of the cervix, colon, breast, pancreas, prostate, and esophagus. More recently, research done at Ohio State University (Semin Cancer Biol. 2007 Oct; 17(5): 403–410.) found that black raspberries inhibited the development of oral, esophageal, and colon cancer in rats. Of course, all berries have healing components. But, for fighting cancer, red and black raspberries with their high ellagic acid content may be particularly potent! SUMMER EATING

The Herbal Connection

S

by Kajsa Nickels

ummer is an ideal time to add a healthy dose of fresh, organic herbs to make cool salads, luscious smoothies and other hot-weather eats and treats. Herbs are not only a flavorful addition to any meal, they are also chock-full of health benefits, from lowering blood pressure and improving mineral balance to increasing immune support, hydration, energy and healthy skin. Most people consider using herbs in small amounts as seasonings for recipes such as spaghetti sauce, soups or desserts. However, they are edible plants, just like kale and spinach. Although they tend to have strong flavors when dried, fresh herbs are usually quite mild and can be eaten in large amounts like any other vegetable.

Cool Benefits “Summertime herbs are important for dealing with the heat and humidity that the season brings,” says Nathaniel Whitmore, a Chinese medicine herbalist and shiatsu massage practitioner in Milford, Pennsylvania. An herb that he recommends for this time of year is American ginseng, which, unlike its Chinese namesake, is considered a “cooling” herb and helps keep the body moist. When combined with fresh chrysanthemum flowers, the result is a powerful elixir that both hydrates and energizes. “A piece of American ginseng root and a few chrysanthemums placed in a jar of water and set on a windowsill for a few days

Fresh Is Best While herbs can be used in their extracted and dried forms, the most significant health benefits are often found in the raw, organic plant. “Fresh is better,” says Whitmore. “This is especially true when it comes to the more aromatic plants such as basil and lavender. A lot of the more volatile constituents are lost during the drying process.” Most herbs grow best in dry garden areas that receive at least eight hours of sun each day. Although some herbs can grow in partially shaded locations, they won’t be as flavorful. Many herbs can also be grown in containers or pots. Maria Noël Groves, a clinical herbalist in Allenstown, New Hampshire, and author of Grow Your Own Herbal Remedies: How to Create a Customized Herb Garden to Support Your Health & Well-Being, lists lemon balm, Korean mint, anise hyssop and purple basil as among her favorite summer culinary and beverage herbs that are easy to grow in pots. These make easy pickings for wraps, salads, sandwiches and more. “Lemon balm can also be used to make infused water,” says Groves. “With lemon verbena, lemon grass or holy basil, the result is refreshing and calming.” Just take a few sprigs and place them in either plain or seltzer water. The result is a delicately flavored beverage that’s also healthy and hydrating. Kajsa Nickels is a freelance writer and a music composer. She resides in northeastern Pennsylvania. makes a great cold infusion,” says Whitmore. “You can store it in the fridge for a few days and drink it in small amounts at a time to benefit from its energizing and hydrating properties.” Soft-stemmed herbs such as parsley and dill can be used in large amounts in salads and summer sandwiches. Other heat-tolerant herbs that are easy to grow include lemon balm, rosemary, lavender, mint and basil. “Lemon balm is great for headaches and insomnia that are common during summer heat waves,” says Michelle Schoffro Cook, Ph.D., an herbalist and doctor of natural medicine, in Ontario, Canada. “Basil can help reduce summer achiness, while lavender serves as a relaxant and an excellent bug repellant.” In addition to relieving headaches and restlessness, lemon balm is also beneficial for those that suffer from high blood pressure. A study in the Journal of Herbal Medicine reports that it is helpful in reducing blood pressure in patients with chronic stable angina. Rosemary, another herb used for sleep disorders, was found to also help improve memory and decrease anxiety in a study conducted in Iran at the Kerman University of Medical Sciences. One study in 2009 by researchers in the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Allahbad, in India, revealed that polyphenols found in herbs and plants harbor antioxidant properties that can help reduce the risk of developing cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, osteoporosis and neurodegenerative disorders.

Toning the Vagus Nerve Relief for Pain, Anxiety and Inflammation by Marlaina Donato

R

esearch is helping doctors connect the dots between seemingly unrelated conditions like irritable bowel syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia, revealing a common denominator: the multitasking vagus nerve, the longest in the autonomic nervous system. The superpower of this doublebranched cranial nerve lies in transporting major neurotransmitters along what is

known as the brain-gut axis. “The vagus nerve stems from the brain to the abdomen like a communication superhighway between your gut and brain,” says Hannah Aylward, an Orlando-based certified holistic health coach and gut health expert. “Studies show that the vagus nerve regulates inflammation throughout the body.”

Promising Research

Recent studies have shown that vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) can improve

quality of life for individuals suffering from numerous conditions. One type is a device that can be implanted by a neurosurgeon, which sends electrical impulses to the vagus nerve in children that suffer from seizures and adults with depression as a supplemental treatment when surgery or medications are not possible or effective. There is also a handheld, non-invasive VNS option called gammaCore, a U.S. Food and Drug Administration-approved device that offers hope for sufferers of cluster and migraine headaches. Its effectiveness for chronic pain management, as well as in cases of epilepsy and depression, was published in the Neuromodulation Journal in 2015. PTSD researcher Imanuel Lerman, M.D., and his colleagues with the Veterans Affairs San Diego Healthcare System, found that VNS affects areas of the brain responsible for processing emotional pain. The findings, published in the journal PLOS ONE earlier this year, also show that VNS delays the brain’s response to pain signals in individuals with PTSD.

Mental Health, Trauma and the Gut

When it comes to the vagus nerve, anxiety is physical. Post-traumatic stress is rooted in neurobiology and experienced in the body, not just the mind, says Arielle Schwartz, Ph.D., a Boulder, Coloradobased clinical psychologist and author of The Complex PTSD Workbook: A MindBody Approach to Regaining Emotional Control and Becoming Whole. “This is why you can’t simply think or talk your way out

"I am close to you indeed, my friends. Look for Me then sooner than you think possible. Perhaps not tomorrow, or next week, or even next month, but very, very soon. Raise your voices. “Learning to be aware of our internal state and learning calming techniques helps to regulate the autonomic nervous system and can go a long way,” says Siegel. “High ventral vagal tone means having a state of calm.”

An imbalance in the gut can lead to an inflammatory response in the immune system and a wide range of disruptive symptoms.” Aylward notes that 95 percent of the body’s mood-boosting chemical serotonin resides in the enteric nervous system, which governs the function of the gastrointestinal tract. “The brain-gut axis is becoming increasingly important as a therapeutic target for psychiatric and GI disorders,” she says. Daniel J. Siegel, M.D., clinical professor of psychiatry at the UCLA School of Medicine and founding co-director of UCLA’s Mindful Awareness Research Center, explains the trauma loop. “Developmental trauma impairs the integrative circuits of the brain and nervous system—the prefrontal cortex. When this happens, the brain will be hyperalert, interpreting some non-threatening situations as threatening.

Everyone can benefit from increased vagal tone, which goes hand-in-hand with engaging the parasympathetic nervous system for optimum equilibrium at the cellular level. Acupuncture, chiropractic—with a focus on the cranial nerves—massage, meditation, singing, laughing loudly, chanting mantras, gentle yoga and exercise, positive social interactions, belly breathing and chanting all make the vagus nerve a happy camper.

These activities promote relaxation and help to decrease inflammation. “As a certified yoga instructor, I can attest to a wide range of natural vagus nerve stimulation techniques, especially using the breath,” says Schwartz. “Diaphragmatic breathing creates a gentle massage across your digestive organs, releases the diaphragm and stimulates nerve fibers within the lungs. Heart rate is reduced.” Brief exposure to cold water or cold air improves vagal tone and is a good option when anxiety is high. Eating cold-water fish like wild salmon or other foods high in omega-3 fatty acids such as walnuts, seaweed, hemp, flax or chia seeds provides vagal nourishment. Marlaina Donato is the author of several books, including Multidimensional Aromatherapy. Connect at AutumnEmbersMusic.com.

Vagus-Nourishing Diet Tips Advice from gut health expert Hannah Aylward: ✔ Eat plenty of vegetables, high-quality proteins, fiber and healthy fats. ✔ A diet low in sugar and processed carbohydrates supports healthy vagus nerve function by maintaining a healthy gut microbiome. ✔ Practice intermittent fasting, which stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system (not recommended for people suffering from adrenal fatigue or high stress). ✔ Take probiotics. Lactobacillus has been shown to increase GABA via stimulation of the vagus nerve. Bifidobacterium longum has demonstrated it can normalize anxiety-like behavior in mice by acting through the vagus nerve.
