Cá estamos… ora viva e muito bom dia! Boa sexta-feira!

Esta semana o tema sobre educação superior está em cima da mesa. Cargos atri- empo estranho, este ano. Muita chuva. Humidade... bem esse fator não nos abandona, agora a chuvinha. Embora seja uma bênção, já está a tornar-se cansativa. Tempo bom para as lesmas e para os caracóis. Enfim.Este tema é irritante. Não tem tendências a alterar a nosso favor, nem agora, nem jamais. Tudo porque durante e uma quase pós-pandemia, porque ainda andamos a 90%, não se iludam, o cerco ainda não está completamente liberado, por muito que o queiramos. Dizia eu, para não perder o fio à meada que os grandes moguls, os capitalistas que nos controlam muito e quase tudo, usaram a dita cuja pandemia para se auto enriquecerem. Ainda mais!

Como é que se justifica valores tão inflacionados nos últimos 40 anos? Valores na ordem dos 10,4 %? É complicado. Não admira nada que, cada vez mais, os bancos alimentares implorem por ajuda. Ajuda justificada para alguns, porque também há daqueles que lá vão sem necessidade terem. Enfim, esse seria outro tema.

Ir ao supermercado tornou-se, para todos nós, uma aventura. Eu questiono-me a cada vez que o faço. Mas será que se enganaram nos totais? Mas afinal que comprei eu?

Nem carne, nem peixe. Alguns legumes e frutas e pouco mais...

Não está fácil e a este ritmo, muita fome haverá por aí.

Esta semana

Será uma outra vertente a que se destinou o propósito desta pandemia do século 21? Acabar cada vez mais com o pobre, para que o mais abastado prevaleça e se enchafurde nos lucros e no poder? Esquecem-se que também eles morrem e que nada levam. Só a ganância que os motiva. Essa sim, levam-na com eles. É o que é e vai valer sempre o que vale. Ser solidário quando as pessoas necessitam esse sempre foi e será o meu lema.

Até já e não se esqueçam - às 6 horas da tarde, horas de Toronto, mais um Roundtable. Onde a falar é que a gente se entende.

This week’s edition of Milenio Stadium is highlighting an individual’s achievements in Academia. Headlining human beings is never a simple task because over or under advocating for someone more often than not creates imbalances and unfairness which are open to analysis by many who consider themselves to have skills above the commonality of most of us.

Discussing Maria João Maciel Jorge is an analysis of the immigrant who came to a strange country looking for a better life, sometimes by choice and often not. Integrating into the society of our adopted countries requires sacrifice and vision for what is possible without having all the tools in the box. Adopting academia as your life project is an enlight- ened path to serve society in a selfless way.

To consider the value and purpose of a University education you also need the vision that you will be intellectually shaped with transformative experiences that go beyond the acquisition of knowledge and skills, plus the procurement of values, critical thinking and intellectual curiosity. These life altering requirements prepare an individual for professional success and/or inspiration to embrace a mission which results in the betterment of others.

MJ chose and the Portuguese Canadian society is richer because of her choices. The art of teaching and communicating is a lifework which is often thankless because learners do not understand where teaching comes from. Mouthing words is not schooling. Teaching comes from caring about the expansion of those who accept the cultivation of the mind and to have the courage to become better people.

So, why are there individuals who stand at the front of a class colonizing people’s minds with seeds of knowledge often without the appreciation of those who don’t understand what inspired the words they just heard? Those words serve as a catalyst for intellectual knowledge which will expand their world view.

Maria João has taken her steps to the expansion and promotion of cultural and linguistic understanding to hundreds of human minds, resulting in a melting pot of diversity where individuals from various backgrounds and culture enhanced their cultural competence and broadened their perspectives about Lusophone studies.

How fitting that a Portuguese immigrant of humble beginnings has reached a stage in her service to society deserving of our respect and our gratitude for endeavouring to not settle. Universities have difficult tasks ahead in educating a new breed of students in transformative times where AI and social media will affect who they become.
