I N TR O D UCT ION The following are the terms and conditions (“Terms and Conditions”) for the sale of products (“Products”) by MilesTek Corp. (“MilesTek”) to MilesTek’s customers (“Customers”). PLEASE READ THIS AGREEMENT CAREFULLY. ANY DIFFERENT OR ADDITIONAL TERMS SET FORTH IN CUSTOMER’S PURCHASE ORDER OR SIMILAR COMMUNICATION ARE OBJECTED TO AND SHALL NOT BE BINDING ON THE COMPANY UNLESS A SEPARATE AGREEMENT HAS BEEN SIGNED BY AN AUTHORIZED OFFICER OF THE COMPANY. BY PLACING AN ORDER FOR PRODUCTS FROM THE COMPANY, OR BY ACCEPTING DELIVERY OF THE PRODUCTS DESCRIBED ON THE APPLICABLE PACKING SLIP, BILL OF LADING AND/OR INVOICE RECEIVED WITH THE PRODUCTS, YOU AGREE TO BE BOUND BY AND ACCEPT THESE TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF SALE. 1. ACCEPTANCE AND CANCELLATION OF ORDERS All orders are subject to acceptance by MilesTek in writing by a duly authorized agent of MilesTek; any written acknowledgement of receipt of an order shall not, in and of itself, constitute such acceptance. Orders accepted and processed by MilesTek may not be cancelled by Customer except as covered by the Limited Warranty. Non-Standard Parts are defined as Products which are special orders, custom orders, orders for non-standard products, products not customarily in stock or orders for value-added products. Non-standard products are Non-Cancelable and Non-Refundable and for these products, all sales are final. Cable Assemblies built-to-order in our facility are Non-Standard Products and are also Non-Cancelable/Non-Refundable (“NC/NR”). In the event of cancellation or other withdrawal of an order for any reason and without limiting any other remedy which MilesTek may have as a result of such cancellation or other withdrawal, reasonable cancellation or restocking charges, which shall include all expenses than incurred and commitments made by MilesTek, shall be paid by Customer to MilesTek. Customer requests to reschedule are subject to acceptance by MilesTek in its sole discretion. Orders may not be canceled or rescheduled after the order has been submitted by MilesTek to the shipment carrier. MilesTek reserves the right to allocate sales and limit quantities of selected Products among its customers in its sole discretion. Product specifications and availability are subject to change without prior notice. 2. PRICES Orders are billed at the prices (in US dollars) in effect at the time of shipment. Prices will be as specified by MilesTek and will be applicable for the period specified in MilesTek’s quote. If no period is specified, quoted prices will be applicable for thirty (30) days. Most current pricing will be as displayed on the MilesTek website found at www.MilesTek.com, or any of it’s affiliated websites (e.g. www.MilesTek1553.com, and others). The catalog reflects the latest pricing information available at the time of printing. Prices shown in the catalog are subject to change without notice. Prices are subject to increase in the event of an increase in MilesTek’s costs or other circumstances beyond MilesTek’s reasonable control. If Customer does not purchase the quantity upon which quantity prices are based, Customer will pay the non-discounted price for the quantity actually purchased and/or a cancellation or restocking fee. Prices are exclusive of taxes, impositions and other charges, including: sales, use, excise, value added and similar taxes or charges imposed by any government authority, international shipping charges, forwarding agent’s and broker’s fees, bank fees, consular fees, document fees and import duties. 3. TERMS OF PAYMENT All payments must be in US Dollars. For Domestic Orders We accept major credit cards MasterCard, VISA, American Express, and Discover. We also offer C.O.D. and Pre-paid by wire transfer, money order, company or personal check (personal check will delay order up to two weeks). Open Account Credit is available to businesses, schools and institutions or as otherwise specified by MilesTek subject to an approved credit application. To obtain a credit application, please contact any Customer Service or Sales Representative by calling toll free at 1-800-524-7444, or (+1) 940-484-9400. You may also download a copy of the MilesTek Credit Application form. For International Orders We offer MasterCard, VISA, American Express, Discover, prepaid by wire transfer, cashier’s check in U.S. Dollars, as well as open account credit to qualified institutions and businesses. We cannot accept personal checks or

terms & conditions certified personal checks. Money orders can result in significant delays. Payment via Open Account Credit can be established for companies having three U.S. references. We also offer Pre-paid by wire transfer, a wire transfer fee of $25.00 must be included. Orders will not be accepted until funds have been received in full and Purchase Order (PO) has been received. Customer is responsible for duties and taxes. 3.1 TERMS OF PAYMENT For All Orders Customer agrees to pay the entire net amount of each invoice from MilesTek pursuant to the terms of each such invoice without offset or deduction. Orders are subject to credit approval by MilesTek, which may in its sole discretion at any time change the terms of Customer’s credit, require payment in cash, bank wire transfer or by official bank check and/or require payment of any or all amounts due or to become due for Customer’s order before shipment of any or all of the Products. If MilesTek reasonably believes that the Customer’s ability to make payments may be impaired or if Customer fails to pay any invoice when due, MilesTek may suspend delivery of any order or any remaining balance thereof until such payment is made or cancel any order or any remaining balance thereof, and Customer will remain liable to pay for any Products already shipped and all Non-Standard Products ordered by Customer. Customer agrees to submit such financial information as MilesTek may reasonably require for determination of credit terms and/or continuation of credit terms. Checks are accepted subject to collection and the date of collection will be deemed the date of payment. Any check received from Customer may be applied by MilesTek against any obligation owing by Customer to MilesTek under this or any other contract, regardless of any statement appearing on or referring to such check, without discharging Customer’s liability for any additional amounts owing by Customer to MilesTek. The acceptance by MilesTek of such check will not constitute a waiver of MilesTek’s right to pursue the collection of any remaining balance. Invoices not paid when due will bear interest to date of payment at the annual rate of eighteen (18%) percent or such lower rate as may be the maximum permitted by law. If Customer fails to make payment when due, MilesTek may pursue any legal or equitable remedies, in which event MilesTek will be entitled to reimbursement for costs of collection and reasonable attorneys’ fees. There is a $25.00 service charge on all returned checks. 4. SALES TAX Only residents of the State of Texas need to remit sales tax. MilesTek does not remit sales tax to states other than Texas. Any sales tax due that is not collected by MilesTek is the responsibility of the customer. 5. DELIVERY AND TITLE All shipments by MilesTek are F.O.B. point of shipment, and the amount of all transportation charges will be paid to MilesTek by the Customer in addition to the purchase price of the Products. Subject to MilesTek’s right of stoppage in transit, delivery of the Products to the carrier will constitute delivery to Customer and title and risk of loss will pass to Customer. MilesTek will make reasonable efforts to initiate shipment and schedule delivery as close as possible to Customer’s requested delivery date(s). Customer acknowledges that delivery dates provided by MilesTek are estimates only and that MilesTek will not be liable for failure to deliver on such dates. Selection of the carrier and delivery route will be made by MilesTek unless specifically designated by Customer. MilesTek reserves the right to make deliveries in installments. Delay in delivery of one installment will not entitle Customer to cancel any other installment(s). Delivery of any installment of Products within thirty (30) days after the date requested will constitute a timely delivery. Delivery of a quantity which varies from the quantity specified shall not relieve Customer of the obligation to accept delivery and pay for the Products delivered.

Higher impedance stub terminators (1000, 2000 or 3000 ohm) are used to simulate future loads from an unspecified device in testing environments. TRS subminiature connectors

Standard (TRB) connectors are designed for extreme durability and heavy-use applications. TRB connectors are the most common interface size (same size as BNC/TNC series). This connector series is not recommended for weight-sensitive applications. The maximum outer cable diameter is 0.475 inches (large-body versions are available for larger cables)

Subminiature (TRS) connectors are preferred in applications that require weight reduction, high packing density, and noise-free guarded circuits. TRS connectors can increase packing density to more than 240% compared to TRB standard connectors. The reduced size limits the maximum outer cable diameter to 0.250 inches.

description

Twinax cable is a two-conductor, twisted, balanced wire line with a specific impedance and a shielding braid around both wires.

technical information

The twisting of the two balanced signal-carrying conductor wires cancels any random induced noise voltage pickup, giving protection against any low-frequency magnetic noise passing through the copper braid. Twinax cable is shielded, insulated from the twisted signal carrying conductors.

MilesTek’s twinax cable design lowers cable losses by adding two dielectric fillers under the braid (separating the braid away from the signal pair), thereby lowering the leakage capacitance to ground. The coverage is improved to up to 93% by using more copper wire in the braid and weaving it tighter. This design also provides protection against ground loops and capacitive fields.

applications

Twinax cables are a cost-efficient and effective option for shortrange, high-speed, differential signaling applications. For this reason, twinax is best suited for low-frequency digital and video distribution systems, like connecting MIL-STD-1553 bus and stub devices. Twinax cable is most effective up to approximately 15 MHz, since it has higher transmission losses above this frequency.

Triax cable is coax cable with an additional outer copper braid (insulated from the signal carrying conductors) which acts as a shield protecting the enclosed coax conductors.

technical information

The outer braid is grounded and passes both ground loop and capacitive field noise currents away from the signal-carrying coax. This greatly improves the “signal-to-noise” ratio when compared to standard coax cable. In essence, triax cable provides additional shielding, insulated from the signal carrying coax.

driven shield

Triax cable is also used in “Driven Shield” (see diagram below) applications, where the inner conductor and the inner braid are driven in parallel at the transmitting end, and work against the outer braid which is insulated above ground. The inner braid creates a “Faraday” shield between the inner conductor and outer braid, as it is floating at the receiving end. Thus, the cable’s distributed capacitance, cable losses and loading are greatly reduced.

applications

Triax cables are effective for a broad range of applications, including high-frequency transducer data systems (where the distributed capacity in coax cable limits the data accuracy) and precision low-current measurements. Also, the two braids are useful as a low-impedance transmission line (approximately 12 ohms) to carry high-current pulses to low-impedance laser lamps or exploding bridge wire (EBW) ordinance systems.

A bus controller manages the information flow. Remote terminals interface with one or more simple subsystems to the data bus and respond to commands from that bus controller. A bus monitor is used for testing the data bus. The data bus is comprised of couplers, terminators, twinaxial cable assemblies, and other accessories.

purpose & application of bus couplers

The degree of mismatch and signal distortion due to reflections are a function of the impedance presented by the stub and terminal input impedances. To minimize signal distortion, it is desirable that the stub maintain a high impedances. This impedance is reflected back to the main bus, so, at the same time, the impedances must be kept low so that an adequate amount of signal power can be delivered to the receiving end. For this reason, a trade-off between these conflicting requirements is necessary to achieve the specified signal-to-noise ratio and system error rate performance (for more information, refer to MIL-HDBK-155A).

The bus couplers have such built-in fault isolation resistors providing protection for the main bus in the event of a short circuit in the stub. All devices, including the bus controller, bus monitor and remote terminal, must be connected to the stub ends of the coupler.

cable type

Both ends of the bus must be terminated with 78 ohm terminators, whether it includes a single coupler or a series of couplers connected together. Some couplers have built-in terminators and are generally used at the end of the bus in multi-coupler applications. These types of couplers can be either single or dual-terminated, and are mainly for vehicle applications, as they limit the flexibility of lab test set-ups. In a lab application, the unused stub ports on the coupler do not need to be terminated since the stubs have a higher impedance than the bus. A high-impedance terminator (1000 to 3000 ohms) may be used in vehicle applications to simulate a future load from an unspecified device. In both lab and vehicle applications, an RFI cap over the unused stub is a deterrent to interference and dust.

connector types

The purpose of the bus coupler is to reduce reflections and maintain signal impedance levels. Since directly coupled devices (without couplers) do not provide any DC isolation or common mode rejection, direct connection to the bus should be avoided. Should these directly coupled devices have any shorting fault between the its internal isolation resistors (which are usually found on the circuit board) and the main bus, the entire bus will experience failure because the device’s internal isolation resistors are not sufficient to ensure against the bus shorting out.

bus length considerations

MIL-STD-1553B does not specify the length of the bus. That being said, the maximum length of the bus is directly related to the gauge of the cable conductor and time delay of the transmitted signal. A smaller conductor attenuates the signal more than a larger conductor. Typical propagation delay for a 1553B cable is 1.6 nanoseconds per foot. Thus, a 100 ft. (end-to-end) bus would have a 160 nanosecond propagation delay, which is equal to the average rise time of a 1553B signal. This delay time is proportional to the distance propagated. According to MILHDBK-1553A, when a signal’s propagation delay time is more than 50% of the rise or fall time, it becomes necessary to consider transmission line effects.

Typically, the cable used to connect the bus and stub devices has a characteristic impedance of 78 ohms at 1 MHz. FEP and PFA jacket high-temperature cable are used in vehicles, while the PVC jacket cable is more suitable for lab use.

TRB - There are several types of connectors used on the bus and at the coupler stubs, the most common of which is the concentric twinax connector. These connectors typically have three bayonet coupling slots (plugs) or lugs (jacks) known as TRB type, which have the same envelope size as a coaxial BNC connector. The center contact is high (positive) connected to the twinax blue wire and the cylindrical contact is low (negative) connected to the twinax white wire. The body of the connector is the bus shield. TRS - There is a subminiature version of the twinax concentric connector known as TRS type (same envelope size as TPS coaxial connectors).

waveform characteristics (varying distance)

Consideration must be given to the actual distance between the transmitter and receiver, as well as the individual waveform characteristics of said transmitters and receivers. MIL-STD-1553B specifies that the longest stub length is 20 feet for transformer coupled stubs, but can be exceeded. With no stubs attached, the main bus acts as a transmission line with infinite length without disturbing reflections. When a stub is added, the bus is loaded and a mismatch occurs with resulting reflections.

Systems designers must be aware of cable compatibility of connectors and availability of components before finalizing the design of a data bus system.
