Hannah Kidd has risen to national prominence and international award through developing a body of representational sculpture whose hallmarks are broad and significant. Kidd’s works are compellingly accurate, imbued with life-spirit and individual character. Kidd clads her works with recycled corrugated iron. The works contain a rural vernacular that is built from acute observation and understanding. Dogs on the NZ farm are of course as significant and fundamental as the water supply. They are the ubiquitous tool used to work stock and with each dog there are distinguishing subtleties and differences in behaviour, presence and the role undertaken. Kidd reveals this in her acclaimed characteristic and incisive manner. All prices are NZD and include GST; Prices are current at the time of the exhibition
HANNAH KIDD b. 1979, lives Franz Joseph
Domestic Bliss (Pair) (2011)
Franz Josef based sculptor Hannah Kidd predominantly crafts and welds sculptural creations from steel rod and corrugated iron as a means to investigate people and the relationships they have with their surrounding environment. “Kidd’s works remind us we are New Zealanders and explore our relationships with each other and our environments”. (1) Kidd’s subject matter has focused on witty and often comical animal studies which she has used as a vehicle to discuss the human condition. “Kidd’s works are covered with flat tin, spot-welded, and remarkably detailed, notwithstanding their clear origins in bits of roofing iron. She will take on any living subject, from humans to horses.” (2) Hannah Kidd has quickly risen to critical acclaim and her distinctive and unique work has been exhibited around the world, from Australia to Denmark including “I’m sure I’ve seen that before”, Vienna, Austria (2002), Sculpture By the Sea, Sydney (2007) Sculpture By the Sea, Denmark (2009) & (2011), Sculpture By the Sea, Perth (2009) along with numerous group and solo exhibitions throughout New Zealand. Hannah Kidd graduated in 2001 from the Otago Polytechnic School of Art with a Bachelor of Fine Arts majoring in sculpture. In 2010 she was the Winner of the Montalto Sculpture Award, Australia and the People’s Choice Award at NZ Sculpture On Shore. 1. Brown, Warwick ‘Seen this Century’, Godwit, 2009 2. ibid
