Preparing for Your Next Doctor’s Visit One of the most important relationships you will have during the course of your recovery is with your doctor. There are two main types of doctors that a person with schizophrenia or another serious mental illness visits regularly: a psychiatrist and a primary care physician. A psychiatrist is the doctor who monitors your mental health and prescribes medications that treat the symptoms of a serious mental illness.

A primary care physician is the doctor who monitors your overall health and treats conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Good communication is essential in the doctor-patient relationship, so it’s important to prepare in advance for your doctor visits.

Suggested Ways to Prepare: 1. Make a list of the topics you want to discuss. For example, discuss how you have been feeling since your last appointment. Are there any other treatment options available? If something is on your mind, bring it up with your doctor. The sooner you have the conversation, the sooner your doctor can address your needs and concerns.

2. Write down the questions you want to ask. Putting the questions you want to ask on paper will allow you to be prepared in advance of your appointment. Don’t rely only on your memory! Write things down to reduce the possibility that you will forget to ask your doctor important questions.

3. Speak up. It’s your right to get the information you need from your doctor. If the doctor explains something you don’t understand, ask him or her to explain it to you in simpler language.

4. Ask about medications and new treatment options. If you have questions about a medication and its side effects, or you want information about new or different treatment options, just ask. For example, there are pills you can take every day or twice a day and other medications you only have to take every 2 to 4 weeks. It is your right to be an active participant in your healthcare. So don’t be shy about asking questions about the options available to you. Empowering yourself with knowledge is an important part of your recovery.
