Our team at Milieu excels at being nimble. We work hard and are deadlines can be chaotic, but the end result is so good I think we sometimes amaze ourselves. This issue is no exception. We dare to be different, and we don’t mind stepping outside of our comfort zone to ensure that our readers are getting an interesting magazine editorially that is designed like no other. This issue we are introducing Fortune 52 STEAM, stories about extraordinary women who are making a difference in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics. All of these women are trailblazers and their accomplishments will hopefully inspire you to learn more about the emerging careers in STEAM and to share their stories with your friends and their daughters. Maria Ryan is on a triple-track career as a dentist, administrator and researcher at the School of Dental Medicine at Stony Brook University. Linda Chan Senior IT at Veeco Instruments is about to embark on a brand new journey of creativity inspired by her lifelong mission of utilizing technology to transform the world for the better. Janice Jijina is also on a triple-track career as an engineer, planner and marine biologist at Cameron Engineering. Jill Rader Levine is an artist, curator and is melding art and charity together. Mona Spector is a geneticist who not only has been credited with groundbreaking research in leukemia, but is an inspiring mentor from Cold Spring Harbor Labs. All of the STEAM women were photographed by Flo Siemsen of Babylon, who brings a special talent of being nimble and having a great eye for beauty. A special thank you goes to Sara Anne for bringing us the story of Melissa Joan Hart. We continue to feature only Long Island women on our covers and this issue is no exception. Melissa hails from Sayville and dishes on her favorite Long Island memories, as well as what she’s been up to since she skyrocketed to fame as an actress, author and star of Sabrina the Teenage Witch and Clarissa Explains It All. Sara Anne and I work many hours to bring you the most up-to-date tips and trends, fashions and everything else that is Long Island. Then when we’re done amassing all of this information, we go out and meet new people and learn even more. We love what we do and are privileged to do it. Our Guys Who Get It are making news in their Lace to The Top initiative, as told by our award-winning writer, Jaime Franchi. The group’s founders Anthony Griffin and Kevin Glynn are both educators who’ve been bucking the Common Core directives. If you have school-aged children, this is a must-read. Our new event listing page, FanFare, includes a calendar of not-to-be-missed Long Island events, and Bon App is all about apples. If you would like to receive a complimentary subscription of Milieu, go to MilieuLI.com and sign up for home delivery. The cooler weather is coming and it’s much more convenient to receive our magazine in your mailbox. Warm Regards, Beverly

TRE Lulu DK Metallic Tattoos

Artist Lulu deKwiatkowski of Manhattan and the Hamptons launched her company lulu dk by transforming her paintings into fabric fantasies. We particularly love her temporary metallic jewelry tattoos with ornamental designs and scripted words. Applied with water, they last up to six days and are easily removed with baby oil. NDY Emerald City
7
Dorothy isn’t in Kansas anymore! Emerald City, a new NBC drama puts a tornado twist on the classic movie, “The Wizard of Oz.” Expect less fairytale and more “lions, tigers, and bears, oh my!” The buzz is new series will keep you on the edge of your seat as you experience “Emerald City” as a dark re-imagining of the City of Oz.
6
We were “all ears” when we heard this look was back in fashion after first creating a buzz back in the ‘90s. Whether your style is edgy or classic, ear cuffs are a trend-forward jewelry accessory that everyone can wear. From dainty to dramatic, studded to sparkly, this new look has everyone smiling from ear to ear.

The Pocket Poppet Do you shiver in the office? Tremble from the a/c in the movie theatre? There’s no more goosebumps if you keep this practical and stylish cardigan-on-thego handy. Its fashionable open-drape style comes in black and in jewel-toned colors. There’s a small inside pocket to stash your cell phone, ID and lip gloss and it folds into a water repellent bag. Your body heat removes any wrinkles quickly so you can be warm and stylish. (ThePocketPoppet.com)
Umbrella Shaped Folding Bicycles
10
After riding this bike, simply push forward on the seat, and it folds into an umbrella-shaped-and-sized package that fits into the included backpack. Although you can’t actually use it as an umbrella, the lightweight bike can be placed in your backpack for the day and taken out when you are ready to ride again. That’s “wheely” clever.

Mathematics
STEAM celebrates Long Island women who are making a difference in the Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics industries. Through print, social media and face-to-face networking Beverly Fortune, publisher of Milieu Magazine, introduces these extraordinary women to the Long Island community.
full steam ahead In the past 20 years, women have made tremendous strides in the traditionally maledominated fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM). The Arts were added to create “STEAM” to meld the creative problem-solving and flexible thinking needed to resolve some of today’s most complex challenges. Often, STEAM careers were considered not suitable for women and some were even forbidden from applying for certain positions. Today, we know that women have not only the capability to excel at these jobs, they have the talent and genuine interest in STEAM fields to tackle such universal problems as global warming and make unprecedented advances in medical research. The women profiled in this Milieu STEAM story are all from Long Island, all top in their respective fields, and are strong, professional and positive influences in their workplaces and communities. In 2012, the Girl Scout Research Institute released a study that found an overwhelming majority of girls want a career that they love. To that end, Suffolk County Girl Scouts recently opened The Discovery World Science and Technology Center at Camp Sobaco in Yaphank to support efforts to foster girls’ interests in STEAM careers. Young girls want careers where they can use their creativity and make the world a better place, so instead of looking at the hard and fast definition of a scientist or engineer, they are learning that STEAM careers can be exciting and have a tremendous impact on their community and around the world. Young girls need mentors who can share 24 MILIEU Exclusively for Long Island Women

their experience and expertise, and sometimes all it takes for a girl to get interested in science is experiencing it hands-on. According to the National Council for Women and Information Technology, there will be more than 1 million computer specialist job openings in the United States by the year 2020, with women having the capability of filling 50 percent of those jobs. In order for that to happen, women need to earn a much larger percentage of STEAM degrees, so the need to nurture this talent has to start when they are young.
milieuli.com
“We open the center to as many people as possible,” explains Yvonne Grant, executive director of Suffolk County Girl Scouts. “We are coordinating with school districts and we have teachers who have volunteered their time.” The Discovery World Science & Technology STEM center is decorated in bright colors with a DNA-theme throughout. Most of the center’s design was conceived by Jenna Grant, whose use of LED-flower chandeliers and ceiling-lit constellations and shooting stars was well planned out. “At the center they can decide to pursue what really interests them. We give them that opportunity. All programs are hands-on, ” Grant says. With the Girl Scouts taking the lead in educating young girls about STEAM careers, many will find their career goals earlier in life, allowing them to go Full STEAM Ahead and explore exactly what path they would like to take. In 1886, New Yorker Lucy Hobbs Taylor overcame numerous obstacles and challenges to become the first American woman to graduate from a dental school. More than a century later, Maria Ryan of Laurel Hollow became the first female dentist to graduate from the State University at Stony Brook and go on to pursue a tenure track position, a prestigious designation that includes institutional support for research and the freedom to explore new ideas and interests, to teach and administrate. Her choice of careers was not without pitfalls, however, and the question of work-life balance had to be addressed. “There was concern on how I could do both,” explains Ryan. “My chair at the time, Israel Kleinberg, was one of the few who recognized that diversity was good and the profession itself was moving in that direction.” With her own sense of style, Ryan, though petite, walks confidently in her Christian Louboutin high heels as she navigates the halls of the school. Today, almost 50 percent of dental school graduates are women. What is lagging behind is the number of women who are committed to moving up the academic ladder by taking administrative positions as department chairs and deans. Ryan was a trailblazer who pursued a triple track: dentistry, administration and research, which she believes goes hand-in-hand with being an academic administrator. “It’s our role to help the profession move forward,” she says. “We need to diagnose, find new treatments and a cure. It’s our obligation to do that.” Ryan was selected to attend the Executive
26 MILIEU Exclusively for Long Island Women
Leadership in Academic Medicine (ELAM) program at Drexel University, the only indepth national program to prepare women faculty at schools of medicine and dentistry to effect positive change as institutional leaders. “The Drexel program was created to first help female physicians get the experience and training to run a school, to move into administrative roles and gain the experience and training that is necessary,” she explains. “It’s almost like a mini-MBA program and they expanded the program to include female dentists.” “The women who attend ELAM go up the ladder in medicine and dentistry,” adds Ryan. “I was fortunate that at an important time in my career development, our university president Shirley Strum Kenny was very supportive of me being a woman in a leadership role.” Traditionally it was never considered the track that women would take—the majority of women dentists still opt to work in a private practice setting —but according to Ryan, there are enough role models in place who can encourage them to go into academics and research. For Ryan, a family history of diabetes that brings a high-risk to her own health was the catalyst in her desire to research the disease.
milieuli.com
“Diabetes is an epidemic of our time, the numbers of those affected is growing rapidly,” she says. “Most people have no clue there is a correlation between your oral health and your overall health.” Since dentists can participate in screening for diabetes, Ryan is working with health insurance companies to offer coverage, ensuring optimal oral health for treatment. “If you don’t treat periodontitis, no matter how much you watch your diet, take medication and insulin, it’s very hard to gain control of your diabetes because oral inflammation will cause insulin resistance,” she explains. “You have to manage infection and inflammation to better control diabetes. It’s a vicious cycle.” Faculty members within Ryan’s department have also developed new drugs and products that are available nationally, including Smart Mouth and Colgate Pro Relief toothpaste. Laboratory studies in progress are focused on the development of new drugs to manage diabetic complications, the correlation of HPV and oral cancer and important stem cell research using teeth and pulpal tissue. For Ryan, her choices have given her the ability and satisfaction to be fully vested in her career. “I still treat patients on a one-on-one basis, but when you do research you can have an even greater impact,” she says. “You can contribute to the health of the population in general.” As an administrator, Ryan can see the impact her studies have had on a much larger scale, evident by the numerous awards, patents and accolades she’s received throughout her career. “I’ve lectured all over the world and it’s very exciting,” she says. “It’s a lot of work, but the opportunities for women are great.” To learn more go to: Dentistry.StonyBrookMedicine.edu Continued on page 28

LINDA CHAN
Senior IT Director Veeco Instruments
THE NEXT Big THING
As the senior IT director at Veeco Instruments for more than 14 years, Linda Chan of Smithtown helped the company consolidate and grow Information Technology globally by always following her motto: “Yes I can.” “They asked me to do a little programming, documentation—anything they asked, I said I could do,” she explains about her start at the company. Linda’s “Can-Do” attitude got her promoted into the IT department, where she thrived, working with the CFO for nearly a decade. Now, proud of the legacy she’s helped build and confident in Veeco’s future, Chan is seizing upon other opportunities to unleash untapped creativity, and is leaving to pursue a new career. “Everything is functioning fine at Veeco and I’m looking to reinvent myself now,” she says. “I love the people here and I’m really sad leaving, but I needed the next challenge.” It’s an inspiring leap of faith that all young women should take note of. Linda is looking to use technology to bring a competitive advantage in a new industry. “I’m very excited to make a transition,” she says. “I see a huge opportunity in data analytics to make the invisible, visible, and to form a competitive advantage using information technology and connecting it to the business.” Working with the chief marketing officer using data and analytics and melding it to other data to find out what is going to drive revenue will be key to success. “The data is out there and is a treasure 28 MILIEU Exclusively for Long Island Women
trove of information,” she explains. “It will be my job to find out how to use data to make the most of it and learn why people are going to buy a particular product or idea more than another. What’s going to be the next big thing?” As a technology expert, Chan is up on what’s new and useful, especially the latest apps. So are her children, she says. “My daughter has been in the theater since she was 7 years old and she uses her technical skills to update the website and social media,” she explains. As the mother of three—now 20, 13 and 11—Chan believes “You don’t have to be a superhero, you need to outsource and delegate.” “I was watching a Sara Jessica Parker movie the other night called I Don’t Know How She Does It and I said to myself, ‘She didn’t have the right apps,’” she laughs. Chan’s App of the Moment? “Life360.” It’s a family locator, messaging tool and
communication application all in one, which creates a private “Family Circle” so members can know each others’ whereabouts and stay in constant touch. “I can see where my children are, if they missed curfew, and it lets you know about any crime activity in the area,” explains Chan. “I can also set up alerts and a panic alert if they are in trouble.” For Chan, the term “technology” means so much more than what most perceive. For her, it’s about reinventing this world for the better, into something wonderful, beautiful. “Technology is much more than putting together wires, coding or just sitting behind a computer,” she explains. “With technology you can use anything. I’m going to follow my passion and dream to use technology towards transformation.” To learn more, go to: Veeco.com Continued on page 30

Janice Jijina, Partner at Cameron Engineering is a Professional Engineer,Marine Biologist and Urban Planner. Photo by Flo Siemsen
JANICE JIJINA
Partner, Cameron Engineering & Associates
Mission: Possible
Janice Jijina wanted to create comprehensive plans for communities—the extraordinarily effective, streamlined approach to making action-oriented policy decisions. So, the Bellmore resident studied to become an urban planner. It wasn’t until she met a marine biologist during a Nassau County summer internship that her dreams began to take flight, altering her course of study and ultimately, her life. Jijina’s mentor was Dr. Anita Freudenthal, of the Marine Ecology Section of the Nassau County Health Department. “Talk about powerful women and mentors,” recalls Jijina, who eventually earned her Master’s degree in marine biology and began working for the county. “That internship was a wonderful experience. She taught me there was nothing a woman can’t do.” One of her most rewarding tasks, she says, was creating a database of the plants and animals that live in Long Island waters. Freudenthal started an environmental science committee, and Jijina went on to chair not only that but become president of the nonprofit New York Water Environment Association (NYWEA). At NYWEA, she became involved in school programs and public education efforts on “floatables” contaminating Long Island’s beaches and waterways. It was there that Jijina’s life took yet another turn professionally when she met John Cameron, founder and managing partner of Cameron Engineering, who offered her a position as an environmental scientist. “I learned a lot about engineering,” ex-

plains Jijina, “and Cameron encouraged me to sit for the PE [Professional Engineer] Exam. “I passed it on the first try. So I came to become an engineer in a roundabout way.” Jijina says that planning and engineering often go together: “How are we going to do this? What’s the cost and how do we get it done?” There were still obstacles to overcome. “I would go to all these dinners and meetings and it was me and about 60 guys,” she recalls of her time as a member and then Long Island chapter chair of NYWEA. She complained about the gender disparity to the membership. Their answer? “Then do something about it.” Jijina took them at their word, inviting women engineers and scientists to meet, which transformed into women mentoring each other and giving advice about work-related issues and familial matters. Jijina was also asked to put together an issue of NYWEA’s Clearwaters magazine specifically devoted to women in the environmental field. “I wrote an article about women and engineering and science with my daughter, who was an intern at the firm,” she recalls.
milieuli.com
“It was really fun to share that experience with her.” NYWEA distributed thousands of copies to guidance offices around the state in an effort to encourage young women to pursue environmental careers. “There has been a huge shift in the past 20 years of women getting into the field,” says Jijina. At Cameron, Jijina discovered the diversity of engineering, planning and environmental science as the perfect combination for her career. “I use a little bit of everything here,” she explains. “We’ve done waterfront projects, restoration plans for West Meadow Beach— I’m still very involved with the water. That’s all come together, and planning has been at the forefront after Sandy.” Working with the government and communities affected by Sandy also gives Jijina job satisfaction. “We find out what are the damages are, their needs, what opportunities were presented and come up with strategies to help put the community back together,” she explains. Some of those projects included shoreline stabilization, drainage systems, generators for fire houses—anything that would make those communities more resilient. Ultimately, Jijina’s been applying her skills and education to make a difference in the lives of many —utilizing engineering as a vehicle for change. “After Sandy, I was doing all of this recovery work while my own house was damaged,” she says. “It gave me a real understanding of what everyone was going through.” To learn more, go to: CameronEngineering.com Continued on page 32

Comptroller George Maragos, Levine’s vision was touted as an “amazing art venture.” The preview show was a huge success with more than 300 attendees. Levine’s efforts gathered 55 artists who exhibited more than 100 works of art. “The Endless Summer” exhibit, which included more than 150 submissions from both men and women, brings another dimension to her shows: charitable fundraising.
JILL RADER LEVINE, MA
Artist, Curator and Photojournalist
AVANT-GARDE “Let’s go into your imagination and take a visual tour of summer as expressed by a multitude of Long Island’s talented artists and photographers,” says Jill Rader Levine as we recently toured her newly curated art exhibit “Endless Summer—Visions of Long Island” at the LIU POST University Center’s Hutchins Gallery in Brookville. Levine explains that her role as curator is to display the artwork of the artists and photographers that she invited to exhibit in this show so that each flows together cohesively. Each submission is the artist’s interpretation of life on LI through photographs, digital art, pencil, fabric arts, multi-media, oil, watercolor and iPad-generated art. “Endless Summer,” is Levine’s second exhibit on view this year. Her first debuted this past March, when Levine saw an opportunity to recognize LI women artists who have made a contribution to the arts. “I’ve always enjoyed reaching out to the community and have worked on local events for years,” she says. Levine’s idea was to show a moment in the life of a women’s experience, from her point of view. The exhibit was called “Women of the World” and coincided with National Women’s History month. “I started reaching out to women artists I admired that I’d met at exhibits and attending workshops with,” she says. Word spread, and many artists asked to be included in the show. With the support of Nassau County 32 MILIEU Exclusively for Long Island Women
“She came to visit me and we went on a whirlwind tour of museums, the Met, MOMA and Nassau County Museum of Art,” says Levine. “I told her when she goes home perhaps she can spearhead an event for charity.” “I was born an artist and am an artist first,” she continues. “I was an art educator and went into interior design for many years. I received my Master’s degree in photography, a field that I didn’t study before. Design

“There is a wonderful synergy between art and charities,” she says. “Each artist contributed a minimum donation that was set for the exhibit.” Levine chose the Nassau County Fire Fighters Wounded Warriors as the charitable recipient from her “Endless Summer” exhibit. Levine’s birthday is Nov. 11, which is Veteran’s Day. “So I have a special interest in our veterans,” she explains. Included in the exhibit were two oil paintings by Levine’s granddaughter, Lindsey, 15.

Mona Spector, a geneticist at Cold spring harbor laboratory, seeks to inspire young girls who harbor a love of science. Photo by Flo Siemsen
MONA SPECTOR, PHD
Staff Geneticist, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, DNA Learning Center
“WHY” IS JUST A CROOKED LETTER Mona Spector of Cold Spring Harbor says she was always inquisitive and loved science. Yet achieving her dream of working in that field required a journey of discovery no one could have ever predicted. Growing up in Brooklyn, she recalls asking her mother so many questions she would eventually answer, “Why is just a crooked letter.” “I grew up in a family where no one had gone to college,” she explains. “I was supposed to graduate from high school and get a job.” Wanting to continue her education, Mona lived at home and worked part-time so she could attend college. She graduated with a merchandising degree and worked as a buyer in the garment district. “It was not for me, I missed science,” she recalls of that time. So Spector went back to school thinking that a career in physical therapy would soothe her craving for science, but says she cried every day. Finally, a mentor brought Spector into a working laboratory and showed her an experiment they were working on with snails. “From then on I was hooked,” she says. Scientists have been saddled with a reputation of being humorless and overly analytical and Spector dispels that myth with her rich and vibrant personality. “Scientists come in every day and discover something new. You don’t sleep, you dream about what you’re going to do next. You’re discovering data, interpreting the data, thinking of new experiments. I can’t imagine doing anything else.” Spector ultimately earned her doctorate studying cell-division control at Memorial
34 MILIEU Exclusively for Long Island Women
Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. “Cancer is a disease of normal cells going awry,” she explains. “If you can understand how normal cells work you can figure out what went wrong with them and intervene.” “What happens to normal cells after they are damaged?” Spector asks. “Why do cancer cells keep dividing out of control and why do they lack a process which allows them to die like damaged normal cells? They ignore everything in the environment.” And while Spector was devoting her career to studying cancer cells, she was diagnosed with breast cancer herself—the diagnosis further fueling her passion for finding a cure. Spector was in the laboratory seeking answers, and it brought a perspective to her research. “There was no such thing as night,” she says during that period of working almost 24/7. She is a survivor, 11 years now. Spector’s enthusiasm never wavered for her vocation, and now, Big Data—data sets so large it’s very difficult to synthesize potential revelatory findings—is at the top of her list. “It’s important for people to understand that we can sequence whole genomes now,” she says. “The human genome has 3 billion base pairs of DNA. We used to sequence a thousand. It’s an enormous amount of data. You have to manage that data, store it and analyze it. We need to collaborate with other
milieuli.com
scientists on that.” Spector has already been credited with finding two previously unknown gene mutations as a result of studying a patient’s DNA with mast cell leukemia. “I sequenced the genomes of both the cancer cells and normal cells and I looked for mutations in cancer cells,” she explains of the remarkable discoveries. “If you can find the mutation you can target the cancer cells with drugs and not treat the whole person, sparing the normal cells. That’s the goal for targeted chemotherapy.” Spector simply cannot keep her passion of science bottled up. In addition to having spent countless hours in the lab, she feels compelled to share her knowledge with the rest of the world, both furthering its impact and inspiring others on their own roads to discovery. She recently co-taught a two-week workshop for university professors from around the country about Big Data. “I led them through a workshop of next generation sequencing so they could bring it back to their universities,” she says. “They are very motivated to get their students into their resource programs and labs.” She is on a mission to introduce as many people as she can to the wonder of science and the potential to change the world. “I want to get students engaged and excited about science,” she says. “At the learning center we engage middle and high school students in real experiments and they love it.” “We have to get science out there more,” continues Spector. “Somebody introduced me to science and I have to give back. “Although I loved science, I grew up without being exposed to scientific career options, and would like to reach those kids, ones who might never have the opportunity otherwise.”

Melissa Joan Hart, the local girl who stole America’s heart as a teenager in Clarissa Explains It All and Sabrina the Teenage Witch, is all grown up. We caught up with Hart at Richard Salgado’s annual “Big Daddy Golf Classic” at Oheka Castle this past June. Hart has been busy and has appeared onstage, competed on Dancing With the Stars, has directed several television episodes and written her own memoir, Melissa Explains it All: Tales from My Abnormally Normal Life, and is the spokesperson for Nutrisystem. This fall, she will be launching King of Harts, a clothing line for boys.

lthough Hart, 38, has settled in Connecticut with her husband, musician and singer Mark Wilkerson, and their three sons Mason, 8, Braydon, 6 and Tucker 2, she splits her time between the East and West coasts. She is currently starring on the ABC Family series Melissa & Joey, shot in Los Angeles. “When we begin shooting again I have to move my family back to LA for six months,” she said. “I loved playing Sabrina, but Mel from Melissa and Joey is my favorite role because I can be silly, quirky, and it also has a great storyline. Melissa and Joey has a Sabrina-esque ‘witchy’ element to it that I’ll be directing in an episode this fall.” Originally, Melissa and Joey was pitched as a movie, but when Joey Lawrence was cast as the male lead, they loved working together so much it was turned into a series. Hart is not only the female lead, but director and executive producer as well.
place was Sayville Town Pizza. We also loved Kingston’s Clam Shack. Once in a while we rode our bikes to Poppa-Mia Lemon Ices on the corner of Oakdale and Sayville.” These days, her adventures take her to some more upscale places, though she does enjoy keeping it local. “My brother grew up with Mike Wilson, who is the chef at Monsoon in Bay Shore,” she said. “The last time I was home to visit I went there for my mom’s birthday party. It’s a really beautiful building and the food is as good as it looks. All of our family birthdays are close together and we celebrated at Monsoon.” Before she was in ABC’s Sabrina The Teenage Witch, Hart starred in Nickelodeon’s Clarissa Explains it All. At the time, Hart was a little embarrassed that she was a teenager on a children’s network, but she loved the premise of the show and how real it was. Not only was Clarissa Explains it All home to the careers of Michelle Trachtenberg and Wayne Brady, it also paved
“I loved my childhood, growing up playing in the neighborhood, playing baseball, riding my bike to school with neighbors, getting excited for the first snowfall of the season,” said an enthused Hart. “I really loved my ballet classes at South Shore Dance. Ralph Macchio took dance classes there as well. I wanted the same life for my three sons, so that’s why we moved to a suburban area in Connecticut.”
“Directing is the most fulfilling role for me,” she said. “It’s a lot of work; I just finished directing a Christmas movie in Connecticut. With acting, you’re for hire. You can make choices and decisions based on your character, but only to an extent. With directing I have control of my project and still am able to come home to my kids.” Clarissa and Sabrina made Hart a television icon with characters who spoke directly to the ’90s generation. Born in Smithtown, she grew up in Sayville. That Long Island experience is one she is looking to replicate with her own children. I wanted the same life for my three sons, so that’s why we moved to a suburban area in Connecticut.” Although she spends much of her working life in Los Angeles now, the East Coast will always be home. And the Long Island storefronts, the family-owned businesses that catered to families like her, made a lasting mark on Hart. “My parents were ‘hippies’ and raised us without a lot of money so we often ate at home, we had a lot of pasta, and sometimes got lamb chops if my family was lucky, even though I hated them,” she said. “When we did go out as a family, our favorite

the way for some of the best writers in television history. Alexa Junge, television writer, producer and screenwriter, worked onset and is best known for her work on the series Friends. Paul Lieberstein went on to work on the hit show The Office. Hart gained valuable experience watching her mother, Paula, juggle career and motherhood. She explained that her mother was a mother first and a businesswoman second. She served as Hart’s manager, casting director and executive producer, helping Hart’s career grow very quickly and helped her daughter navigate what could have easily become treacherous waters. Together, Hart’s agent and mother always ensured that she was surrounded by morals and ethics. Hart feels fortunate that Sabrina The Teenage Witch aired before reality television became a programming staple. What had come about as the result of labor strikes created a lasting genre that no one thought would ever survive, least of all Hart. Do not go looking for a Kardashian-like show about Hart and her mother, however. “Reality has created stars for no apparent reason,” shared Hart. “It’s not even being socialites! It’s just being famous for being famous. I don’t know what would happen if that went on during my childhood. I wasn’t even allowed to wear black as a kid because my mother didn’t find it appropriate.” When Hart grew older, she became business partners with her mother, producing the 2001 ABC television movie Child

Star: The Shirley Temple Story, based on Temple’s autobiography. Hart described it as a labor of love. “My grandmother introduced me to the movies as a little girl,” she said. “Being able to work on this movie was a dream of a lifetime. We met Shirley Temple and she trusted my mother and I to honor her mother’s memory in the film. We shot the movie in Australia during the same time Sabrina was filming.” She hopes to show her boys Temple’s 1935 classic The Little Colonel someday soon. Although Hart might be a wildly successful—and busy—Hollywood star, her mother’s strong influence helped her keep it real. If you follow Hart on social media, you’ll catch glimpses of her life with pictures of her boys and homespun status updates that sounds just like the girls who grew up next door to you. Shrugging, Hart explains that she likes to document her children growing up as much as the rest of us do, and putting out candid pictures of her home life satiate the paparazzi, who then don’t swarm over her children. In fact, you can catch her picture on Facebook with a bucket of ice water dumped over her head in the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, just like everybody else on Long Island. Just maybe, she looks a little better getting cold and wet than we do.

Cherrywood Foot Care A BREAKTHROUGH LASER
ADVERTORIAL
TREATMENT FOR TOENAIL FUNGUS Many people suffer from a condition called Onychomycosis (onni-koh-my-ko-sis), which is better known as toenail fungus. This condition is noticeable by a thickened, yellow or cloudy appearance of an individual’s toenail plate. The toenail can become rough and crumbly or can separate from the nail bed. There is usually no pain or other bodily symptoms unless the disease is severe. The condition can often affect a person’s ability to enjoy the simple things in life such as going barefoot or wearing sandals. Is there hope for sufferers of this condition? Cherrywood Foot Care in Nassau County has just introduced a medical breakthrough by offering the newest in laser technology for toenail fungus: the Cool Breeze Laser. Cherrywood Foot Care, led by founder Dr. Joseph Burke, has been a part of the Long Island community for over 24 years. They offer quality medical and surgical foot care. The facility features cutting-edge emerging technologies such as a diagnostic ultrasound and a state-of-the-art operating room on premise and this new laser treatment for toenail fungus. Dr. Burke and his qualified staff have the most advanced training and use the most advanced techniques in the treatment of this condition and your entire foot and ankle healthcare. Cherrywood Foot Care and Dr. Burke are leading the industry with this revolutionary treatment that quite simply can eliminate toenail fungus. The laser treatment destroys pathogens that cause toenail fungus. This is a serious and powerful medical advancement that the public needs to learn more about. This revolutionary new laser treatment appears more effective than all previous treatment options. Laser therapy for toenail fungus is completely safe, painless and has no side effects. In most cases, usually only one treatment is needed. This treatment leaves patients with a significant improvement in the health and appearance of their toenails. The laser operates in a very tight spectrum of near-infrared light. The laser light passes through the toenail without causing damage to the nail or the surrounding skin. The beam created 42 MILIEU Exclusively for Long Island Women

by this specially designed medical device kills the embedded pathogens in the nail plate and nail bed, leaving normal healthy tissue undamaged. Only minimal adverse reactions, injuries, disabilities or side effects have been reported in clinical studies with this new laser technology and treatment. In contrast, topical treatments are minimally effective. “Oral medications available today can cause side effects to the liver, kidney and eyes, and may even affect your senses of taste and smell,” states Dr. Burke. At the time of the procedure, the toenail will not become instantly clear, it takes time to grow out. A new healthy nail will be seen emerging from the cuticle area as the nails grow naturally. The average toenail replaces itself every six to nine months. Within one to three months of the procedure, a healthy new growth will be visible. The laser treatment is very effective, according to clinical studies performed in Sacramento, Calif. Most patients experience significant improvement. In most cases, the fungal nails are improved with a single treatment. The vast majority of our clients require only one treatment, which usually takes about 30 minutes. No anesthetic or injections are ever used and you will be able to resume all of your normal activities immediately after the treatment is done. It is recommended that after the treatment (just like you practice good oral hygiene to keep your teeth and gums healthy), you will need to practice good foot hygiene to keep your toenails healthy. Find out how to end your struggle with toenail fungus by visiting Cherrywoodfootcare.com or call Dr. Joseph Burke for a free consultation. Their professional medical staff will help you to feel welcome, relaxed and comfortable with a caring office experience. Cherrywood Foot Care can have you barefoot and smiling with confidence once again with this revolutionary new laser technology. It can eliminate unsightly toenail fungus giving you clear healthy toenails with an affordable one-time treatment! If the Claw Fits: A Bully Story By Jaime Franchi jfranchi@moreypublishing.com
I stood up to a 10-year-old kid the other morning before I even had my first cup of coffee. Let me qualify that—I stood up to someone else’s 10-year-old kid that morning. Although I have a hard time reconciling mama bear mentality with a minivan-driving suburbanite, I’ve found that sometimes, the claw fits. I’ll give you context. We’ve all been made aware of the bullying epidemic on school playgrounds. What had been almost a rite of passage in the previous generations’ experience has heightened in intensity and viciousness. Social media has brought a whole new dimension to what had previously been a 2-D problem. Now it’s even more in your face, following kids from classrooms and playgrounds home to their outside lives. My 9-year-old isn’t smart-phone savvy yet. He is Twitter-less. But you and I know that this relative innocence has an expiration date. I’ve got to prepare him to live in a world where the Internet exists, even as he is still more content with Legos than X-Boxes. Cut to the 10-year-old I threatened. My son had been upset the night before, telling us about the continued torment at the hands of this child. Not really physical, but more of an ongoing campaign to malign my kid, to get others to ostracize him. The latest incident had all the boys playing handball erupt into chants of “Boo!” whenever my son touched the ball. It would almost be easier if there were simple old-fashioned physicality going on. A call to the principal and it would be monitored and taken care of. But this was something more vaporous. And more insidious. You can force children to keep their hands to themselves, but you can’t make kids be kind to one another. Or to like each other. And life is never easy for the tattletale. Mary Calamia, a clinical social worker who works with children, confronts the issue of bullying with many of her patients. And while she cautions that there is no blanket answer to deal with bullying once and for all, they all must be dealt with. “Each situation has to be judged on its own merit, but each situation needs to be addressed. “ How it is addressed varies depending on each individual situation. Sometimes the right thing is for the parent to step in. Sometimes, if it’s safe, the child will feel more empowered by standing up for him or herself. There are times when all of the victims of one particular bully
44 MILIEU Exclusively for Long Island Women
band together in solidarity and rise above the abuse with safety in numbers. “As we know, bullies are not born,” Helen LaLousis, of Billy the Anti-Bullying Foundation, tells Milieu. “They are made.” She counsels others to remain as empathetic as possible in a bullying situation, to recognize the human element behind the abuser and to get educated about the best ways to handle each situation from a young age, so that bullying situations could be nipped in the bud as early as possible. Helen has introduced Billy The Bull—a symbol of a boxing kangaroo—to accompany her educational program designed for children. “What we’re trying to do is to bring this awareness forward,” she explains. “He’s portrayed as a symbol of safety. We’re all familiar with ‘S.O.S.’ This is a little different than the traditional means of ‘help.’ Ultimately what we’d like to do is have Billy go to schools, speak to the children. “Bring this in early in life is going to enable these children to be aware as they go through school,” she continues. “They’ll know how to approach these situations rather than acting out in a negative way or even, in a worse-case scenario, with their lives.” She has introduced Billy the Bull stickers for display on the backs of cars for kids who need help. Just as Tot Finder stickers alert firemen to children’s bedrooms in the case of fire; these stickers will let kids know that there are adults who have made the commitment to help in a bullying situation. Sometimes that help takes the form of a concerned mom. Like me on the morning I spied that 10-year-old in the midst of a group of his friends in front of the school. Something took over me. I rolled down my car window and called to him. He looked behind both shoulders. “Who me?” his eyebrows asked me. Oh, yes, kiddo. You. He swaggered to my car. The confident step of his walk, built on the backs of picked-upon
milieuli.com
kids that came before my own, solidified my goal. I was going to take this kid down. What came out of my mouth was something that took me by complete surprise. I hadn’t planned what to say, I just knew I had to take this opportunity offered to me on the blacktop of the elementary school driveway. Something akin to a possession by a Bruce Willis-type character took over my body, and I—I just got out of the way. “I heard you’ve been picking on my son,” I announced, in Bruce’s strong voice. “This stops now.” He protested. Of course he did. He was already formulating tattletale backlash even as his elbow was draped casually in my car. “A lot of people don’t know this,” I told him, “but my friends? They are the aides in this school. They are the teachers. The principal eats dinners at my house,” I lied. His tiny Adam’s apple made a small movement. “Everything that happens in this school gets back to me. Everything,” I reiterated, wiggling my eyebrows for effect. Oh this Intel came from higher up than my own kid. Sure it did. “Now they tell me that you haven’t been acting very nicely. That’s going to change right this minute. See this?” I showed him the face of my iPhone, where his mother’s contact information sat. (Thank you soccer roster.) “If I hear that you are bullying my son for another minute, I’m going to call your mother.” He finally spoke. “I’m sorry,” he said, quietly. I made him say it again. “What?” He looked up. “I’m sorry,” he repeated, louder this time. “Don’t apologize to me,” I said. “Go say you’re sorry to my son. I’ll watch from here.” He shuffled away from my car to where my kid stood at the front of the school doors, waiting for the day to start. That 10-year-old turned to look at me, checking to see if I was still watching. I gestured with my two fingers from my eyes to his. I see everything, I telecommunicated. Swaggerless, he walked to my kid and offered his hand. Maybe too eagerly, my child shook it. He had a good day that day. And when the social media days come, I’ll deal with it. I started following Bruce Willis on Twitter, just in case, for when the day comes when I need to channel him.

Co-Parenting Your Children After Divorce It’s a well known fact that children have a difficult time adjusting to their parent’s divorce. Have you ever stopped to think about the reasons that cause them so much upset? You might be surprised to know that after the initial anger, fear and confusion is dealt with, the children’s concerns focus mostly on the necessary day to day changes that will occur in their lives. They want to know that both parents still love them; that they will continue to see and spend time with each parent; that they can still live in the same house; stay in the same school and maintain the same friendships they have known. More importantly, children want to know that their parents will stop fighting and not force them to “take sides” against the other parent. When you ask children of divorced parents what they want most in the world their reply usually involves their parents getting back together again. While this may be true in some instances, you will also find that some of them just want to return to the world as it was before the divorce. It doesn’t necessarily mean they want their parents to be back together (to continue the fighting, screaming and name calling); but what they do want is to continue their lives
S ep t em ber / o cto ber 20 14
as they were. Re-uniting is not necessarily what the children are looking for. Sometimes they just want to know that their lives will be stable. To enable children to maintain a strong relationship with both parents following divorce, parents must learn to co-parent in a way that allows children to be comfortable communicating, visiting and living with each parent at various times. Focusing on the needs of the children rather than on the other parent is usually the best way to accomplish this goal. Co-parenting is constructing a relationship that involves both parents dealing with the day to day needs of their children in a way that puts the needs of the children in the forefront of the relationship. Many adults have had to learn to deal with a difficult boss or an annoying coworker on a day to day basis in order to keep their job, but fail to use these same techniques when it comes to dealing with a difficult Ex-spouse. Because children look to their parents for signs that the family can and will get through this difficult period in their lives, divorced parents who work together are more successful at meeting their children’s short and long term needs. Divorce can be very frustrating and
painful, but the number one goal for both parents should be to shelter their children from post-divorce conflict. Post-divorce conflict negatively impacts children and is considered a major stress factor for children caught in the middle. Because divorcing parents often use their children to manipulate and/or control the other parent around a variety of personal, social, and financial issues, it is not uncommon to see an increase in children’s risk factors for behavior problems, such as teen pregnancy, school failure, suicide, depression, delinquency and substance abuse. Parents who express their rage toward their Ex by asking children to carry hostile messages, by denigrating the other parent in front of the child; or by not allowing the child to mention the other parent in their presence are creating stress and loyalty conflicts in their children. Not surprisingly, when parents do not put their children in the middle of their conflicts, these children’s behaviors do not differ from children whose parents had no marital conflict or divorce. Remember – as divorced parents you can make it better or make it bitter for your children.

Marco LaPadura and David Lau make up the Team MD at Charles Rutenberg Real Estate covering Queens and western Nassau county. Although “MD” stands for their names and not for medical doctors, they bill themselves as the “cure” for your real estate needs. With a combined experience of over 30 years in the business and exemplary reviews on the online real estate marketplace website Zillow, they just might be what the doctor ordered. The two joined forces after David went through Marco’s training program when they both worked for another realtor which closed and the two researched real estate companies in the area and discovered Charles Rutenberg. “They’re a very good company, a very well run company,” Marco tells Milieu. “As a matter of fact, they are probably the strictest company I’d ever worked for in my entire career in terms of paperwork and code of ethics.” Together, they have amassed listings all over Queens and into Nassau in the New Hyde Park area where David moved with his wife and is now raising his family. But they are quick to add that location is not what makes a great real estate agent and that their Team could put together deals virtually anywhere. “We really go wherever we need to go, but we’ve developed our business in such a way that we can morph ourselves into whatever we need to market as,” explains David. “So whatever the opportunity is, if we’re marketing a condominium or we’re marketing a home, it doesn’t matter what area we’re in. The techniques that we use seem to work very well for wherever we are.” Those techniques have been developed over time and perfected into the machine that is Team MD. David brings his vast experience in both the mortgage industry and in advertising. “It’s worked out great because I have that marketing background, and the mortgage background certainly helps, I can pre-qualify people,” he says. Marco left IBM to work with his cousin in real estate and never looked back, he found success in his first week as a realtor and it’s safe to say he found his calling. “There are very few jobs in the world where you have the intrinsic rewards that you get from selling real estate,” says David. “I always say, how many people do you know where you’re doing a job, you’re helping someone get rid of something they don’t want, you’re helping someone get into something they do want, and at the end of the day, everybody loves you because you made it happen and you get paid?” A friendship built of success, a desire to help people, and vast experience in the real estate industry. Sounds like just what the doctor ordered. S ep t em ber / o cto ber 20 14

Anthony Griffin & Kevin Glynn Founders of Lace to the Top
Guys Who Get It By Jaime Franchi
LACE TO THE TOP
Ask Anthony Griffin how he met Kevin Glynn, and he’ll regale you with a story about how they stood next to each other on the soccer field watching their kids play. About how Anthony dropped a Star Wars reference that Kevin quickly got. And how the discovery that they were both teachers passionate about their students led to a friendship born over morning runs and long, long bike rides. It sounds like a marriage. And it is, of sorts. They are wedded to a cause. Lace to the Top is their baby. Named by Kevin’s wife Taryn, their advocacy group has now grown to include more than 13,000 supporters across the state who all display bright green shoelaces to convey their message that kids are more than test scores. Anthony, 40, who teaches English at Central Islip High School, believes that making kids fit into the standardized tests fostered by the Common Core curriculum reduces their potential. “If that’s the goal: that you can make them do well on a test that you could prep anyone for, then we’ve lost so much,” he explains. “Love,” he says with conviction. “That’s the word that is always left out of the rhetoric coming from the other side. It doesn’t replace the love that comes from your family, but isn’t it nice to know

that if you’re sending your kid to their second home, that you know that your kid is loved there? He’s not just a data point that’s going to reflect a school district’s effectiveness.” Glynn, 36, a third grade teacher at Middle Country School in Brookhaven, came into education via business: the testing business. He worked for Pearson, the company that creates the standardized tests for New York State for five years, starting his second year of teaching. His resistance to the disproportionate importance the Common Core education reform put on testing began in 2012, when it came down from on high that before the children ever put pencil to bubble sheet, only 30 percent of them would pass. “I made the state tests,” says Kevin. “What changed it, at least for me, and what got me involved in this process was a month before the test was given, they said, ‘We’re going to have a 70 percent failure rate.’ With my math background, I thought that just doesn’t make any sense mathematically. How could you possibly do this? How could you know that 70 percent of these kids are going to fail this test? I knew what was on the test beforehand and I didn’t see any way, shape, or form that these kids were going to fail it.” What followed that year is what education experts described as a manipulation of the cut scores—the grade decided on after the tests were evaluated to determine what constituted passing and failing. For Kevin, this was “the defining moment of it’s time to speak up. We can’t allow this to happen.” And so Lace to the Top, a cause independent of politics, which refuses to accept money for appear-
milieuli.com
ances and will never endorse a candidate, remains focused on a single subject: the kids. As fathers, educators, and community members, they saw the Common Core education reforms, which depended on standardized test scores to function, as fundamentally failing the children they cared about. In June 2013, they joined more than 10,000 teachers on buses bound for Albany to make their voices heard, but discovered that the empowering feeling of making a lasting difference wore off by the time they got home, people who’d advocated so strongly distracted by other things. Lace to the Top was a way to create a symbol that would stay constant in people’s minds. With their sensible shoes and suits, they wore bright green, impossible-to-ignore shoelaces. When people asked them why, they would answer quite simply, “Because I love my kids. They mean more to me than a score.” A simple message. A powerful message. And one Lace to the Top supporters hope will convey to the children in New York that they are valued far beyond the manipulated test scores of Common Core. “Leading up to [the creation of Lace to the Top] were just frustrations with the whole system and the overwhelming challenge of changing a system that was like a juggernaut that was not going to be stopped, yet was so wrong and so destructive to the kids,” Anthony tells Milieu. “And it just has to be stopped because it’s so bad. And what we’re talking about is so good—and the good has to win.” Their cause has taken them all across the state, cheered on by their wives Taryn and Gosia, as they’ve spoken at rallies and forums, spreading the word that children deserve a quality education, and that teachers who put their very hearts and souls into nurturing environments where students are inspired to love learning—a maligned idea whose time is due—merit respect. Shortly after these dads met, Anthony and Kevin began coaching their sons’ pee wee soccer league together—and lost almost every single game. “But the kids loved it. They all wanted to be on our team,” Kevin says. “They all still love soccer.” “And they’re all great soccer players now,” Anthony chimes in. Which is precisely the point. To the younger ones, they didn’t emphasize drills, strategy, or discipline. They fostered a love of the sport, from which the skill the players would need later to win could be refined over time, in step with the kids’ growth. A love of the sport. A love of learning. Love. This is their vision. This is what the green laces you might notice around town on Long Island signify. If you know a Guy Who “Gets It” and would like to nominate him for a future profile, email Beverly@MilieuLI.com.

Reflections on My 20-Year High School Reunion By Jaime Franchi jfranchi@moreypublishing.com
lmost everyone has a nemesis. A person from your past who sits like undigested food in your stomach, someone whose insults left lasting teeth marks on your psyche. Time heals many wounds, but those of us who’ve had an enemy in high school know that pain flares up at the most unexpected times when unrelenting memories decide to rise to the surface. Facebook might have made the high school reunion both redundant and unnecessary, but that tradition has yet to get the memo. And so as the 20-year mark approached this summer, text messages and emails flew with the inevitable question: “Are you going?” Only one thing held me back: her. I didn’t know if she’d even show up. No one had heard from her in years. I’d matured and moved on, rarely looking back. Yet, with the occasional glass of wine or sometimes watching my children venture into social situations where bullies abound, I’d think of her. I’d remember the stinging comments, the hurtful gossip, and the meanness she could conjure up. She criticized my clothes and my hair. She spent untold hours studying the imperfections of my face. My body never stacked up. In those awkward years, when just walking into a room of my peers was tough enough, I could count on her words to cut me down to size, knowing my weaknesses and cruelly exposing them. Sometimes the only solace I took was that she could be as nasty to others as she was to me. You can bet I’d be going to my reunion. And I decided if she dared show up, I would confront her.

They are my Class of 1994 Lindenhurst High School classmates: (L-R) Sammy Chu, me, Lisa Bertino, Sharon Nocella, Joseph LaSala
The party was held in a bar in Babylon, one town east from where we’d grown up in Lindenhurst. Less than a third of the graduating class came. Some had moved too far. Some didn’t find out about it in time. And some probably just stayed in that night, haunted by memories of their own adolescent ghosts. But not me. Bolstered with courage from a glass of wine held over from dinner beforehand with George, a friend who’d stayed constant throughout the 20 years, I walked confidently into Lily Flanagan’s. I was so thrilled to see so many faces I remembered, and some I hadn’t, that I didn’t even think of her. I ordered a strong drink from Brian, another Lindy alum, and caught up with some very old friends. When she finally showed up, it wasn’t like I’d imagined at all. It was gradual. One minute I was showing off pictures of my children when, another cocktail later,

I heard her voice. I would have recognized it anywhere. I heard her criticizing the outfits of my classmates. I heard her recount stories long buried—and for good reason. I saw her snub people who had just as much right to be there as she did. And for the first time in my life, I did what I should have done a long time ago: I took an honest look at her. I recognized insecurity where before I’d only seen ugliness. I saw immaturity and uncertainty, but underneath it all, a desperate need to fit in contrasted with an equal fear of getting lost in the masses. And so I decided to give her a break. Finally. After all, she was only 18 back then. When I accepted her, warts and all, relief flooded over me. Because I didn’t have to be her anymore. I went to my 20-year reunion to confront an old enemy: myself. And instead I forgave her.

• NY State adopted the apple as the state fruit in 1976. • 2,500 varieties of apples are grown in the United States. • The average person eats 65 apples every year.
Start an annual family tradition! Long Island is home to a variety of farms and orchards where you can pick your own apples. Not only is it lovely to be surrounded by fruit-laden trees, it’s great fun to pick your own produce.
• Apple trees take four to five years to produce their first fruit. • Apples are a member of the rose family. • The largest apple ever picked weighed three pounds. • It takes the energy from 50 leaves to produce one apple. • The first apple nursery opened in Flushing in 1730. • It takes about 36 apples to create one gallon of apple cider.

October is National Dental Hygiene Month
People are more aware of what they eat and they are concerned about their overall health. Keeping your teeth clean and healthy is an important part of this process. Your mouth is the first part of the digestive tract, if you can't chew properly, then you can’t break down food. If your teeth aren’t clean, the bacteria gets into your body, whether you are eating well or not! Usually dental cleanings are recommended every 6 months. Here is an analogy I use with my patients about why cleanings with a Hygenist are important: Cleaning your shower everyday helps keep it looking clean, but it needs a good scrub to make sure all the nooks and crannies are cleaned too. A Hygenist ensures that the areas you can't reach are clear of biofilm, plaque and calculus. Then the dentist can examine your overall mouth to see if it’s free of cavities, cancer and infection. Study: 3D Mammograms May Detect More Breast Cancers A recent study about 3D mammography published in The Journal of the American Medical Association has garnered significant attention from the national press for reporting that the exam may detect more breast cancers in women. The study, funded by Hologic (the manufacturer of the 3D imaging machine) and the National Cancer Institute, reported improved cancer detection as a result of the newer test (called “tomosynthesis”), finding cancer in 5.4 of every 1,000 scans compared to 4.2 with digital mammography alone. Some experts are even predicting that this test will some day replace mammograms as the standard of care. The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, USA Today, Time, Bloomberg, CNN, and Reuters were just a few of the publications and networks that reported favorably about the new study. Tomosynthesis (3D Mammography) is nearly identical to the routine mammogram most closely associated with testing for breast cancer, except that with the new test, the machine
moves over the breast. The result is a 3D image that gives doctors better visibility through overlapping breast tissue, allowing for a more comprehensive view that can increase the appearance of small tumors previously difficult to detect in dense breast tissue. The 3D mammography exam can thus improve cancer detection and reduce false-positive and falsenegative findings. Fewer women are being called back for additional imaging or for biopsies. During tomosynthesis, your breast will be under the identical compression of a mammogram. While the X-ray tube makes an 8 second arc over your breasts, 15 low-dose images are obtained at incremental angles. These images are computer processed to make hundreds of thin 1 mm slices, which are viewed in 3D. This eliminates overlapping shadows and uncovers hidden lesions. Zwanger-Pesiri Radiology is the leading breast imaging facility on Long Island with over 80,000 3D studies performed. All mammography units are 3D and offered in 11 of our locations.

What’s in the Cards SEpTEMBER / OCTOBER
Pathway to Positivity
BY PSYCHICDEB
Virgo August 23 to September 22
the 7 of Swords – you need to apply your mental energy in a very prudent way. Don’t behave aggressively but use diplomacy to achieve your desired results. If in conflict with someone or up against a difficult situation, then clear thinking will help you through.
Libra September 23 to October 22
the 5 of Swords – this card represents the need to accept the reality of things. Don’t try to force your partner to make a decision right now. It will only backfire and leave you feeling diminished. There is no point in trying to assert yourself because the forces you are up against are stronger than you are.
Scorpio October 23 to November 21
Psychic is a Greek word meaning soul energy. You have the ability to participate consciously in your soul energy. Pathway to Positivity will give you the tools and a safe place to open up your mind and learn about your spiritual nature.
the Sun – this card represents contentment and happiness. The darkness is dispelled and you can now see how to resolve any problems. Your positive attitude means that you are now able to enjoy life and be successful in whatever you do.
Sagittarius November 22 to December 21
the World – this card indicates the successful completion of one cycle or stage of life and the beginning of another. You may be experiencing a deepening spiritual connection and strong sense of oneness with everyone and everything.
Autumn Equinox
Capricorn December 22 to January 19
the King of Wands – you feel confident now and it is time to act on your intuition and move forward with confidence in what you are doing. You can now achieve a tremendous amount and will be enabled to deal with any setbacks along the way.
Our Souls have seasons, just as the Earth reflects upon the ocean as it kisses the shore, as the leaves fall off the trees, as the snowflakes hit the ground, as the bees pollinate the flowers and as the Sun warms the breeze at the same powers our Soul. We collectively go through cycles of cleansing, healing and rebirth on a continual basis.
Aquarius January 20 to February 18
the 10 of Cups – a cherished wish will be granted. Family life is a source of much happiness and the birth of a child may be indicated. You have gained a feeling of peace and everything is working for the best.
Equinoxes occur twice a year—in the spring and autumn, when night and day are equal lengths, when the Sun crosses the Equator.
Pisces February 19 to March 20
It is important to recognize on a Soul Level that we shed the inner emotions connected with negativity with each passing season as the Earth sheds its remnants of good, bad or indifferent.
the King of Cups – this card indicates that it is time to get in touch with your own inner feelings. Your significant other will help you become more open and let you access your inner world.
As the autumn equinox occurs we see light slipping further and further as the sun continues to descend and the nights become longer than the days. The resulting change of season from autumn to winter, symbolizes a stage of inner preparation in the process of enlightenment—to make way for the Son to be born within the winter solstice.
the 6 of Pentacles – you will soon be in a position to share your resources with others. You may reap the rewards of your investments or receive a gift. Equally, someone who is in a position of power or influence may help you. This is a time for charity.
Aries March 21 to April 19
Taurus April 20 to May 20
the 9 of Pentacles – everything is going according to plan. You are reaping the rewards of your endeavors and this gives you a wonderful feeling of happiness and security. You have reached a stage in your life when you feel good about who you are and you do not need the validation of others.
We as Spirits housed in the Physical body must cleanse and release with each new season. Just as any living thing, I suggest we use each season as a reminder to allow continual rejuvenation within our being throughout the seasons and trust our intuition to bring us to new heights.
Gemini May 21 to June 20
the Ace of Cups – a fresh chapter is beginning in your emotional life. It may mark the beginning of a relationship or a new stage in an existing one. Engagement, marriage, or the birth of a child is another indication of this card. Develop your psychic abilities and strengthen your intuition.
This allows for perfect balance and flow from within and also on the outside. The Autumn Equinox can be a powerful alignment and create balance within your life. Fix the inside and it will shine out the outside. Spirit will assist you if you ask and you will be on your way to a cycle of seasons to release old emotions and attachments that no longer serve you. Learn and move on . Use those times as a stepping stone to a higher mind.
Cancer June 21 to July 22
the 6 of Swords – you may be ready to make a move to a new location. Your outlook is much more positive than in recent times, and you are moving away physically and mentally from the turbulent past. Good times are coming!
Leo July 23 to August 22
the Emperor – it is time to have the courage of your convictions and play an active role in organizing matters. Taking control of a situation puts you in a position of power and will enable you to direct the course of your life. You may have the opportunity to start a new business or establish a new home.

I love driving out to the east end in the heart of Autumn. The foliage is a beautiful sight and the weather is lovely. The Spa and Studio at East Wind offers a “circle of friends” package which I’ve booked numerous times. We begin with a delicious spa lunch at Desmonds Restaurant and then we slip into comfortable robes and catch up on life in the relaxation lounge before our massage or facial. Be prepared to enjoy the most amazing 55 minutes of bliss. (East Wind Caterers Inn and Spa, Wading River, EastWindCaterers.com)

I love to take a drive along 25A to Stony Brook Village. The shops are beautiful, I especially love Flair Designer Boutique, and every year the Girl Scouts create scarecrows that are displayed all through the village. A trip to the old fashioned school house or the carriage museum is also a nice treat. (StonyBrookVillage.com)

Caffeine is my lifeblood and Starbucks is the mothership. My calendar revolves around the seasonal offering that is the pumpkin spice latte. It’s perfect accessory to cozy sweaters and suede boots and will keep your insides warmed up - until Peppermint Mochas arrive on the scene.

Autumn means it’s pie season on Long Island, and with the abundance of fresh fruit available here, you don’t have to travel far to indulge in delicious homemade pie in a variety of flavors. Fresh Apples = fresh apple pie, and nothing beats that. Serve warm with a scoop of ice cream and you’ve got yourself a treat.

Accompanying my favorite season is back to school shopping. Even now, I love looking at all of the cool, new notebooks and pens and pencils that fill up local shopping ads. My favorite back to school item has to be pencil cases, and this year, monogrammed pencil cases. It’s the perfect go-to item so you can avoid searching the bottom of your bag for that elusive pen; my favorite is the pink chevron style found on Etsy.
