NAME: Jacob Gwynn
(ARCH) DIOCESE: Venice, Florida
ARMED FORCES BRANCH: Navy RANK: LTJG
EDUCATION/DEGREES:
Saint John Vianney College Seminary, Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy; Saint Vincent De Paul Regional Seminary, currently working toward Master of Divinity.
HIGH SCHOOL: Palmetto High School
HOBBIES:
Reading, cooking, kayaking, and stand-up paddle boarding
TEAM SPORTS:
Crew team during my freshmen year of High School
WHEN WAS THE FIRST TIME YOU THOUGHT YOU MIGHT HAVE A VOCATION TO THE PRIESTHOOD?
As a child, one of my earliest aspirations was to become a priest.
WHO OR WHAT EVENTS INFLUENCED YOUR DISCERNMENT JOURNEY?
Monsignor Joseph Ferraro, a Navy Chaplain of 30 years.
WHAT WOULD PEOPLE BE SURPRISED TO KNOW ABOUT YOU?
I practiced kickboxing for nearly a decade, achieving the rank of brown belt.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE SCRIPTURE PASSAGE, WHY?
My favorite scripture is taken from Psalm 127, “If the Lord does not build the house, in vain do its builders labor; if the Lord does not watch over the city, in vain does the watchman keep vigil.” This verse serves as a constant reminder that all my endeavors are in service to the Lord.
HOW DID YOU COME TO KNOW JESUS CHRIST PERSONALLY?
From a young age, I developed a personal connection with Jesus Christ through the sacramental life of the Church and the inspiring example of my mentor, Monsignor Joseph Ferraro, who made Christ’s presence felt wherever he went.
WHAT SPIRITUAL EVENTS OR ACTIVITIES HELPED YOU DEVELOP AND SHARE YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH CHRIST AND HIS CHURCH?
When I began to consider the priesthood seriously, I was encouraged to pray in silence before the Lord in Eucharistic Adoration. Eucharistic Adoration has been a source of sustenance for me throughout my journey to the priesthood.
WHAT WAS YOUR PROFESSIONAL/ACADEMIC/MILITARY BACKGROUND BEFORE APPLYING TO BE A SEMINARIAN APPLICANT?
I entered into college seminary right after graduating from high school.
WHAT WAS THE NEXT TO LAST BOOK YOU READ, AND WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY READING?
I have recently finished reading MyDearPeople, a compilation of homilies by Monsignor Joseph Ferraro. I am currently reading 12RulesforLife by Jordan Peterson.
WHO ARE YOUR HEROES OR PEOPLE YOU SIGNIFICANTLY ADMIRE?
Besides Monsignor Joseph Ferraro, I also consider Father Vincent Capodanno, Servant of God, to be one of my personal heroes.
HOW WOULD YOU CHARACTERIZE YOUR PRAYER LIFE? WHAT COMPRISES YOUR DAILY PRAYER? DO YOU PARTICIPATE IN THE LITURGICAL LIFE OF THE CHURCH? WHEN, WHERE, HOW?
I would characterize my prayer life as a blend of contemplation and action, which fuels my love for serving others. From my early childhood, I have always had a profound interest in the liturgy, which has laid the foundation for my love towards the Mass and regular confession. In addition to the communal prayer life of the seminary, my day begins early in silent prayer before any other activities of the day. Lately, I have found that during my runs or hikes—times once previously filled with music or podcasts— I now connect with God through silence and nature. This has profoundly influenced not only my exercise routine but also my life of prayer. V

The National Eucharistic Congress, July 2024
Every movement needs a moment.
By Mark Moitoza, Th.D.The bishops of the United States are calling on each community from rural Alaska to urban New York and each U.S. military Catholic faith community, to send representatives to the 10th National Eucharist Congress in Indianapolis, Indiana, July 17-21, 2024. The goal is at least one member from every parish/community. Will you be there? Promotional material for the congress details the moment of this movement:
We know what happens when two or more are gathered in the Lord’s name – but what happens with 80,000? Join us in Indianapolis as we ask him to revive our love of the Eucharist, breathing life into our dry bones. Then, we will be sent back to our communities to invite others to know Jesus. Our nation and our world will never be the same.
Be a part of history. Sign up now!
The Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA, has a limited number of discounted passes for those that would like to participate in the National Eucharistic Congress as participants of the AMS delegation. The discounted passes, which cost $200 each, permit entrance to the activities of the congress. Mass, adoration, prayer, music, keynotes, breakout sessions, and the exhibit hall include some of the rich experiences planned. Housing, meals, and transportation are not included and must be self-arranged. Participants that register must include the name of the U.S. military installation and service branch of which they are a part. A code will be sent along with instructions for obtaining the number of passes purchased. Register now while passes are available, https://www.milarch.org/ resource/national-eucharistic-revival/
Individuals may also register directly, or with another group, to participate in this national gathering. Visit the National Eucharistic Congress website: https://www.eucharisticcongress.org/register. (Note: Families that would like to attend might consider registering directly via the Congress Family with Children Registration process, depending upon the number of children. The cost for parents is $299, and for children, it is $99.)
The whole Congress will be an experience of prayer: a liturgical act offering the Catholic Church—those in attendance in Indianapolis as well as across the country—to the Father, through the Son, and in the Holy Spirit. This reconsecration will result in a massive outpouring of grace and renewed missionary sending as participants are moved to share the Eucharistic love of the Lord “for the life of the world” (John 6:51).
If the demands of your military schedule or an anticipated move over the summer inhibit your participation, there are two ways you can connect:
First, explore the possibility of participating in part of the National Eucharistic Pilgrimage, even for a day or part of a day. Visit the route spreadsheet to identify where the four pilgrim routes will be traveling from May 17th through July 16th.
Second, if distance prevents you from joining one of the four routes, consider planning your own pilgrimage with the Eucharistic Mini-Pilgrimage Guide, https://www.eucharisticpilgrimage.org/plan-your-own-pilgrimage. See you there! V
