Focke-Wulf 190 Wurger (Shrike) Designed by Kurt Tank and first flown in 1939, the “Butcher Bird became operational with the German Luftwaffe in 1941. A powerful and robust fighter, the Fw-190 quickly joined the Bf-109 to become the primary German fighters of WWII. It was effective as a day and night fighter, as a fighter bomber and in ground attack roles. More than 20,000 were built in eight different factories, one of which was located at the Cottbus airport, with the A8 version being the most common.
