About Space Camp Established by the MCEC Board of Directors in 2001, the Bernard Curtis Brown II Memorial Space Camp Scholarship was created in memory of 11 year-old Bernard, a passenger on the hijacked airliner that crashed into the Pentagon on September 11, 2001. The scholarship gives military-connected children the opportunity to have a fully paid, week-long experience combining the worlds of science, service and learning. Campers delight in their week of exploration, and experience science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) programs in action. For more information about Space Camp, and how to apply go to http://www.MilitaryChild.org/public/upload/images/SpaceCampApplication_Web.pdf This camp has given me new inspiration for working towards my goals. Not only did I learn about space, I learned about teamwork and leadership, and met kids who were brilliant, like me! Scholarship recipient, grade 7 For more detailed information about Space Camp, visit their website at <www.spacecamp.com>. I Will Miss You I will miss you Like a dog misses chasing after a squirrel on a warm summer’s day Like a student misses going out during summer to play Like horses miss eating that fresh sweet hay I know that I have to go and I wish that I could let you know That I can write and share about my experiences in the new place that I will be in And all the fun I will have with my new friends, all while missing you And I hope that you will write me too about the places we used to go together And the fun we used to have at those places that you are now enjoying with your other friends Just so you know, I will never forget the time I spent with you Just like all the friends I had and will never forget, in all the different places I have lived All because my dad is in the Military

I drew this artwork because I know how hard it is to be a military child and how happy you are once they return. You don’t know how hard it is to have a loved one away or maybe never return. All that you can think while they’re gone is are they gonna make it home? Really, all you can do is hope and pray that they will ever return. That’s what inspired me to create this artwork about a military child.

Being a military child is somewhat like being a bird. You may feel secure in your home, but in an instant, that branch can break and everything changes. You’re forced to let go of your home and fly away to a new one, away from family and friends and settle in a new place.

Military Girl I don’t wear any uniforms, no blues or greens. But I am in the military, in a rank never seen. I have no job on my shoulders, salutes I never give. But the military world, is the place where I live. I am not in the rank of command, orders I do not get. But my daddy is the one who does, this I cannot forget. I am not the one who fires the weapon, who puts my life on the line. but my job is just as tough, I am the one that left friends behind. My dad is a patriot, a smart and kind man With the job to serve his country, not all understand. My dad works to keep this country free, My dad makes the sacrifice, but so does my mom, brother, sister, and me. Even though it might get a little wild, I stand with the rank known as the Military Child.

How Your Support Helps Multiple deployments coupled with extended family separations have strained our military families, and the impact will be felt for years to come. To help military families and their children thrive in this challenging environment, the Military Child Education Coalition (MCEC) has developed evidence-based programs to support military and veteran-connected children and youth from pre-kindergarten through grade 12. At MCEC, we strive to empower military and veteran-connected children and the community that surrounds them. This includes parents, educators, school professionals, and military, civic and business leaders…this includes YOU! Please join us as we work to meet the challenge of ensuring the children of our service men and women have everything they need to reach their full potential. Help us cultivate our country’s future leaders! Your tax-deductible donation to MCEC, a 501(c)(3) organization, funds programs for students, parents and professionals, providing vital peer and community support systems. MCEC will be honored to be the recipient of your charitable contribution designated in one of the following areas: • Student/Youth Initiatives • Parent Initiatives • Educator/Professional Initiatives Together, we will grow a community of support
...for the sake of the child.

Space Camp Winners Most were at the top of their class academically, and many excel in science and math and are active in Boy Scouts or Girl Scouts. Some plan to be astronauts. The 2014 winners of the Bernard Curtis Brown II Memorial Space Camp scholarships are all exceptional. Encourage students to apply and join the 160 kids who’ve experienced the thrill of space exploration!

Our kits are designed to develop early literacy skills in children from birth through second grade. All GLU Kits are built around carefully chosen resources that parents and child care providers can expand upon, adapt to the needs of their own children, and use over and over again as children continue to grow and learn. Each kit includes ideas and activities adaptable to a range of ages and developmental levels.
How to be a Friend Preschoolers through Second Grade..............$62.95 Aimed at preK through second grade students, the How to be a Friend Kit offers activities and ideas to help kids better understand the complex components of friendship. This kit is founded on the idea that in order to be a good friend, children must first have a strong and secure sense of self. Activities included in this kit explicitly teach basic social skills and provide the tools kids need to begin and build healthy relationships and to identify and avoid negative relationships. Books include How to be a Friend, Travels with Toot and Puddle, and Leonardo the Terrible Monster.
For the almost 2 million children with a parent or loved one serving today in the United States military, this year may bring a deployment of their parent or loved one, an order to move to a new base across the country, or a life changed forever by injury or death. It is these trying circumstances – in these trying times of extended deployments – that remind us of the sacrifices, bravery and courage of the youngest among us: the military child. What is the most important way each of us can honor those who serve our country so bravely? Make a 12-month effort to keep the spotlight on these amazing children and the loved ones who support them.
Here are some ways to do this: Reach Out - Military-connected children are in every school, every town, and every community, so ask around at your workplace, church, or your local recreation center to find military-connected children and learn how you can help.
Keep Standards High - Military-connected children are kids first and military children second. Offer them the same opportunities as every child and maintain the same high expectations for their success.
Know Your Neighbor - Life gets hectic, but take time to meet the military families in your community and learn their story so you can better understand what they are going through.
Stay Flexible - Also remember that deployment of a parent or loved one means the family is operating with one less spoke in the wheel. Offer your help instead of criticism if the child is a few minutes late to soccer practice or forgets the juice on snack day.
Bring Brownies or Offer to Drive to Brownies - Deployment often means the waiting parent becomes a single parent, so help out by offering to carpool to activities, or bring over a home-baked meal or goodies for the family to enjoy.
Be a Mentor - Step up to offer support for the child by becoming a part of their daily life, or serving as a positive role model.
Reassure, Encourage, and Praise - Reassure children that they are safe and loved and doing a good job. Share Your Strengths and Resources - Volunteer to share your webcam so a military family can see their loved one serving abroad, or use your computer’s scanner to e-mail their drawings and photographs. Do Routine Things Routinely - Especially in times of transition and change, children need routine and structure. Maintain their daily routines, and stick to a schedule to ensure balance and comfort in the child’s life.
Support the Deployed Troops - Make an effort with military-connected children to reinforce pride in their parent who is serving, and to recognize the nobility of their service. Help the child send a care package to their parent, or help prepare signs for the homecoming celebration! Military children are your neighbors and your child’s classmates and playmates. They are the children next to you at religious services each week, and the children you see at school and on the playground every day. For their sacrifices, their honor, and their courage, they deserve the best. Art by Amayrani • Grade 5, E. A. White Elementary School • Fort Benning, GA • US Army

Different hairstyles and fashions for the countries to show Every new place there’s something new to know This life is as unique as can be Unlike most families you see Even though I’m a chid My life experiences are not mild New dialects, clothes and religions as I go So many things this world has to show
