Millbrook School

Development Report It gives us great pleasure to announce another record year in fundraising at Millbrook School for 2013-2014. Gifts to the school amounted to over $8 million and featured increased participation by alumni, parents, friends, and neighbors who comprise our Millbrook family. The members of the Board of Trustees continue to lead this transformational effort with optimism, determination, and generosity. Their wise governance and shared ambition support Headmaster Casertano’s clear vision for the Millbrook of today and tomorrow. As Drew begins his 25th year as Millbrook’s sixth headmaster, the school is in a strong position to continue to realize outstanding success in the years ahead. The 2013-2014 Annual Fund totaled $1.862 million, which was a 9% increase over the previous year’s result. During the year our young alumni competed in and were victorious in the “February Face-off ” against nine other schools (Avon, Williston, Hotchkiss, Taft, Berkshire, Gunnery, TrinityPawling, Westminster, and Salisbury). The goal was to increase Annual Fund participation from alumni who graduated in the past twenty years, and Millbrook’s graduates should be proud to have solidly defeated our neighboring schools in this regard while increasing their overall participation in Millbrook’s Annual Fund by 10%. In another very positive development, the parents of the Class of 2014 raised more than $300,000 to support the beautiful new stone bridge that now marks the entrance to the main campus. Following on the heels of the Class of 2013’s effort to name and fund the new terrace attached to the renovated student center in the Barn, this year’s senior class parents set the bar even higher for future graduating classes. The capital campaign progress picked up solid momentum in the last 12 months, and commitments for bricks and mortar and endowment projects neared $40 million out of $65 million, our total goal to reach by 2017. Millbrook’s growth and development have been game changers in recent years. Our new dormitory, which houses forty-four girls and four faculty families, has openeed its door this fall, and the new solar field is complete. Once it is up and running, will reduce our electricity costs by $30,000 this year. There is still a great deal to be accomplished and the priorities for the year ahead are clear: they include raising funds for a new dining hall and increasing Millbrook’s endowment. All of us in the Development Office are excited about the future, and we thank you for being our partners in the advancement of Millbrook School.

ANNUAL REPORT 2013-2014 3

Dear Members of the Millbrook Family, I write to you this fall with more excellent news on Millbrook’s continued strategic progress. Inspired by the leadership of our headmaster Drew Casertano, our school has laid out purposeful and ambitious plans for improvement on a number of fronts, and with your help we are achieving those goals. On nearly every measure – admissions, development, student success – the past year was the best in Millbrook’s history. It is not an overstatement to say that Millbrook School has never been stronger nor the experience for our students better. Over the past year we have continued to make great progress on our campus master plan with the completion of West Dorm, the first new dormitory built just for girls that not only provides additional attractive spaces for our students but anchors the west end of campus. Other dormitories received renovations over the summer as well, enhancing the residential life program for all of our students. Our 7-acre solar field, a partnership with our local utility provider, outside investors, and the State of New York, was completed and will soon provide 100% of our electricity on campus while moving us closer to our ambitious goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2020. And plans are moving ahead with the design and construction of a new dining hall. While we continue to make improvements in our facilities, we remain committed to realizing our goal of being the finest small college preparatory boarding school in the country. Enabled by dramatic growth in our endowment and Annual Fund, we are implementing plans that allow us to attract and retain excellent faculty, supporting them with increased funding for professional development and moving us closer to our goal of increasing the number of courses taught by master teachers. Our improved financial position allows us to devote greater resources to enrolling a diverse and qualified student body and to strengthen all aspects of our educational program. My dedicated board colleagues and I continue to focus on our fiduciary responsibilities of guiding the school that we love into the future, a future that preserves the best of Millbrook’s proud history and tradition while making improvements that enhance the lives of our students and provide a foundation for continued success and sustainability. In this regard we are extremely fortunate to be partners with Millbrook’s headmaster of 25 years, who shares this vision with us and who has guided the school with steady leadership following the path established in 1931 by Founding Headmaster Edward Pulling. Drew Casertano has touched the lives of generations of Millbrook students and their families and continues to approach his work with the same conviction, energy, and success that has marked his long tenure of service to our school. I am fortunate to have been able to work with him for my twenty years of service on the board, a sentiment echoed by my board colleagues, Drew’s administrative, faculty and staff colleagues and generations of students, parents, and alumni. I know you all join me in expressing our gratitude to Drew for his great service to our school and in looking forward to many more years of his leadership of Millbrook School. Best regards,

William L. Menard Chairman of the Board of Trustees

2014 Alumni Weekend On June 6th and 7th Millbrook alumni who were back on campus for Alumni Weekend resoundingly said the same thing: Millbrook has changed so much, yet it remains so much the same!

Alumni returning to campus were excited to reconnect with classmates, friends, and faculty in campus venues old and new. They toured their old haunts and explored the latest facilities on campus designed with purpose and thought to complement Millbrook’s iconic and historical structures. New to many alumni were the Math and Science Center just outside the zoo gates, the renovated Barn, and the nearly completed girls dormitory, which now anchors the west end of campus just behind the chapel.

players and people. Despite the somber occasion, spirits were high and many great, and oftentimes humorous, stories were shared. In the afternoon, the traditional alumni parade led the entire community into the Flagler

Memorial Chapel. Robert Anthony ’65, assistant to the headmaster for external relations, welcomed everyone to the alumni assembly and presented awards to very deserving recipients. The Alumni Achievement Award in Education

In addition to traditional weekend festivities along the lines of dining, dancing, and taking the annual alumni walk, alumni, faculty, family, and friends also gathered for a very special celebration in honor of Coach Mike Fuller. From 2001-2004 Coach Fuller made his home with Gina, Zack, and Maddie Fuller at Millbrook, and he died suddenly in the spring of 2004 while coaching on the lower fields. He shared his passion for the sport of lacrosse and his clear ideas on sportsmanship, character, and the qualities necessary to become champions with every student with whom he had the pleasure to work. His players knew that he demanded their best, and at a memorial luncheon they acknowledged that this made them better

2014 Alumni Weekend was presented to Sumaya Abu-Haidar ’89, and Erin Stuckey ’00 earned the Edward Pulling Community Service Award. Bill Crossman ’74 earned a standing ovation when he accepted the Millbrook Medal. After congratulating each award winner, Headmaster Drew Casertano delivered the State of the School address to further update alumni on the important projects happening on campus and all that the future holds at Millbrook. Visit our Millbrook in Motion page on our website (www.millbrook.org/millbrookinmotion) to watch the State of the School address in its entirety.

THE MILLBROOK MEDAL Bill Crossman ’74 was honored for his continued association with and for his many contributions to Millbrook. From the special citation presented by Bob Anthony ’65 to Bill during Alumni Weekend 2014, where he was joined by his wife, Alison, his daughter, Padget, and his son, Brooks ’09: During his undergraduate days at Millbrook and at Lake Forest, Bill always “bled” Millbrook blue. The school is simply in his DNA. He is as loyal and true as the day is long. When he travels, he wears our school on his sleeve. And no matter where Bill and his family have lived over the years, he has encouraged his friends and acquaintances to visit the campus and to bring their sons and daughters for an interview.

S p e c i al A w ards Edward Pulling Community Service Award Dr. Erin Stuckey ’00 was honored for extending the principles and the spirit of community service in her life beyond Millbrook. From the special citation presented to Erin: During her college days at Washington University in St. Louis, Erin was selected to participate in the International Leadership Program there. Soon she was off to study and work abroad, and she hasn’t slowed down since! At Washington University, Erin earned her BA in Comparative Literature and International Studies. She then received her MS in Control of Infectious Diseases at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. She recently earned her PhD in Epidemiology at the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute in Basel, Switzerland, where she is now an expert in malaria, an enormous public health issue in many developing countries. A large percentage of Erin’s professional, academic, and volunteering efforts have focused in three major areas: malaria, HIV/AIDS, and mentoring and teaching of K-12 school children. Her writings on malaria have been published in a variety of scientific journals. Before becoming an expert in malaria, Erin served as technical advisor for HIV/AIDS for Population Services International (PSI) in the South Sudan from 2007-2009; there she managed and built the department. Her responsibilities included program design and strategic direction, targeting programs for HIV prevention, care, and support. She was involved in monitoring and evaluation for HIV, malaria, and safe water while at PSI as well. In addition to public health issues, Erin has extensive history in mentoring and teaching students. She taught various lessons to “at risk” inner city students in St. Louis and English to students in Chile, and she is currently involved with “CDI Apps for Good” for students across the UK. If and when malaria is finally eradicated, we suspect that Erin will have played an important role in that triumph.

Alumni Achievement Award in Education Sumaya Abu-Haidar ’89 was honored for her exceptional achievement and contributions in her chosen career, and for helping to improve the quality of other peoples’ lives. From the special citation presented to Sumaya: Following her graduation from Millbrook, Sumaya earned a BA in philosophy and education at Dartmouth College and her doctorate in education at the University of Colorado at Boulder. In 2001 Sumaya and her husband, Jason Berv, founded the Watershed School in Boulder. She also served as a founding trustee of this independent middle school and high school that emphasizes a meaningful experiential curriculum, academic excellence, and a nurturing community in a setting that promotes engaged learning and exploration. Sumaya was well qualified for this task as she already had extensive experience in the classroom having taught and coached at the Randolph School in Huntsville, Alabama. She was also a writing instructor at Upward Bound at Northfield Mount Herman School during the summer, before becoming a member of the teaching faculty at the University of Colorado at Boulder for their Teacher Education Program. Sumaya credits Tom Post, her former Millbrook philosophy teacher, with instilling a fascination with the subject that has lasted throughout her career. Sumaya is currently an adjunct professor at Western State Colorado University, where she teaches political science, philosophy, and honors courses focusing on democracy, citizenship, education, and Middle East politics. She is all about “excellence in academia,” and she has invested her energy, time, and resources in current and future generations of students.

Tribute Zoo Education Center

Named in Honor of

Jonathan ’65 and Jane Meigs

Following the opening Headmaster Drew Casertano was thrilled to announce the naming the zoo education building as the Jonathan and Jane Meigs Education Center, and we share below an exerpt from his remarks. Soon after, honors were further bestowed on Jono and Jane at the annual Faculty Honors Dinner; as the Meigs prepared to retire, long-time friends and colleagues offered additional words of praise for their many years of service to students and to the school: Headmaster Drew Casertano: Passionate, determined, visionary, multi-talented, wise, fun, and inspirational—these are just some of adjectives that describe Jane and Jono Meigs. Two more words would be enduring and transformational— these especially describe the contributions that Jane and Jono have made over 40 plus years at Millbrook. In response and to acknowledge their extraordinary service to Millbrook, I’m delighted and honored that the trustees have decided unanimously to name the zoo education center The Jonathan and Jane Meigs Education Center.

Dr. Alan Tousignant:

Celebrating 40+ years of Enduring and Transformational Contributions A large contingent of alumni zooies and friends of Jono and Jane Meigs and the Trevor Zoo gathered at the zoo during Alumni Weekend to celebrate the opening of a new Climate Change Exhibit, an exhibit that beautifully illustrates the Meigs’ stalwart support for Millbrook’s mission of being ever green.

You will never find two people more passionate about teaching anyone who will listen, and often those who won’t, about the natural world and how we all share a responsibility for it. I learned more about the natural world in my first year as the zoo intern (back in 1984) than I did in four years at college. Jane and Jono are consummate educators and rarely let a teaching moment pass without imparting some kernel of wisdom to the audience. Always the teachers and always looking to bring out the best in people—that is what both Jane and Jono have done, and continue to do, at Millbrook.

Cindy McWilliams: I so admire Jane for her loyalty, faith, courage, tenacity, and how she has been an inspiration to so many. She has been a true and loving partner with Jono. As you move into this new phase of your lives I wish you health, happiness, and peace. The word retirement just doesn’t fit. It has the connotation of being put out to pasture or retreating. I have a different perspective of the situation. I learned from a dear friend that there is the perfect word in Spanish JUBILARSE – the root, means jubilation, joy. Isn’t that the perfect outlook? Go forth joyfully, get behind the wheel, and stay in touch!

Commencement 2014 On a picture-perfect Sunday afternoon the Class of 2014 bid Millbrook farewell under the commencement tent on the Flagler Quad. It was a celebration of growth, success, community, and tradition - from Prize Night to Last Night to the commencement walk and the cry line - and hundreds of friends and family were on hand to congratulate the graduates.

Sunday was a grand affair as underform classmates, faculty, staff, and family celebrated this milestone with the class of 2014. George T. Whalen III, Millbrook board member and parent of Sarah ’06, George ’09, Kathryn ’10, and Caroline ’14, welcomed the graduates, underform students, faculty, and families. Board member Christopher Holbrook ’82 was the perfect speaker for this year’s Commencement Address, as he knows Millbrook through and through. The Holbrook connections to Millbrook run deep: Chris’s father, uncle, sister, cousin, and wife Alice are all Millbrook graduates, as are his three children, Cameron ’11, Ali ’12, and Parker ’14. Mr. Holbrook advised the graduates going forward to use a filter comprised of Millbrook’s core values and the cumulative lessons they learned here:

“You don’t need to change the world tomorrow, this summer or in the next year. Ultimately, you will find yourself in position to make a difference in the world. You will wield great influence and you will be able to effect great change, because you will take Millbrook with you, wherever you go.” The VIth formers elected classmate Lucy Papachristou to deliver this year’s VIth Form Commencement Address. In her widely lauded and very memorable presentation, she reflected on her time at Millbrook and urged her class to remember each of their days spent at Millbrook, regardless of whether the day was good, bad, or somewhere in-between, as “memories are truly an expression of love.” We encourage you to read Lucy’s speech, which is available on Millbrook’s website. Headmaster Drew Casertano presented three special awards during commencement: the Sportsmanship Cup was awarded jointly to Lake Miller and Julia May, the Community Service Cup was presented to Mansell Ambrose, and Caroline Whalen earned Summa Cum Laude for Millbrook’s Class of 2014. After hugs and handshakes in the receiving line, there was nary a dry eye as graduates began to officially turn the page on their Millbrook careers and begin the next chapter of their lives as Millbrook alumni.

Senior Profiles

Caroline Whalen College attending: University of Notre Dame Major or area of interest: history and political science, pre-law Senior prizes: Summa Cum Laude, Class of 1978 Award, Art History Award, 4-year Varsity Letter Known for her competitive nature, it’s no surprise that Caroline earned the nickname “Killer” in athletics. She also “killed it” in the classroom, earning the high honor roll during every semester of her four years at Millbrook. “Natural intelligence and formidable work ethic” are two phrases used to describe Caroline, and she brings those innate qualities to Notre Dame this fall where she expects to enjoy the very best of what she experienced at Millbrook: an amazing sense of community and an amplitude of opportunities to become involved in both the on-campus and local communities. About Millbrook she says, “Never in my life have I been in a place where so many people were truly invested in my experience and dedicated to helping me succeed.” And while Caroline succeeded famously here, she was always about sharing her knowledge to benefit the experience of other students, thus earning her the Class of 1978 Award. It’s not surprising that Caroline will study history and political science on a pre-law track, since Constitutional Law was one of her favorite classes at Millbrook. “[Mr. Clizbe’s class] challenged me intellectually in a way that I had never been challenged before. It pushed me to study past cases of the Supreme Court, but also apply them to current day issues. Most of all though, the class pushed me to become more comfortable speaking in public through the mock trials, and helped me realize that this is something I actually really enjoy.”

16

Alex Zhou College attending: University of Southern California Major or area of interest: math and engineering Senior prizes: Cum Laude, Sykes Mathematics Prize Alex is Millbrook’s first graduating male student from China. During his four years at Millbrook, he challenged himself incrementally. Math may have come easily to Alex, but reading Shakespeare as a non-English speaker in the III form required a whole lot of perseverance and dedication. Alex set high expectations for himself, both in the rigor of his classes and in his academic achievements, and he contributed substantially to the intellectual discourse with other students, particularly around topics of math and science. While he will appreciate the warmer climate of southern California this year, his professors and classmates will undoubtedly appreciate his love of learning.

Dustin Sloan

College attending: Carleton College

College attending: Georgia Institute of Technology

Major or area of interest: Russian and other pursuits still to be decided

Major or area of interest: science, design, engineering

Senior prizes: Cum Laude, English Writing Prize, Blaine Essay Prize, Clark Language Prize

Senior prizes: Cum Laude, Science Prize, Abbott Cup

Lucy arrived at Millbrook already in love with reading and writing, but once she settled in she took accordion lessons and then found herself falling in love with math. Lucy continued to reveal her talents by creating a humor magazine, The Yolk, earning the Blaine History Prize, and by being elected by her peers to be the class speaker at commencement. As Lucy pursues her studies at Carleton she is delighted with their trimester system, which means she can explore and discover more interests. After spending two years at a suffocatingly competitive high school, Lucy admits that she “felt strangled” in that environment. Millbrook gave her an aura of calm, reinforced her respect for people’s individuality, and challenged her intellect. “Mr. Clizbe pushed me like no other teacher. ‘Why’ is probably his favorite word. It was hard at first to reconsider every point I’d said or written, but after a while I caught on that it was actually working. He seemed to know what I was capable of before I knew myself.”

Teacher and advisor Mr. Matt Dilley describes Dustin’s universe as “one of pure imagination that has a rate of cosmic expansion comparable to that of the Big Bang.” In fact, Dustin did have his hand in all manner of creation during his four years at Millbrook— from an award-winning 4-foot tall ceramic ice cream cone to a ceramic fire-breathing dragon to a 3-D computer animated film and honors CES to a propane-powered potato cannon. Mr. Dilley credits Dustin’s successes—not only in the arts and in engineering, but across the board— to his commitment to originality. Dustin often took the unseen path to solving difficult problems and applied key physics principles to bottle rocketry to reach new heights. It is Dustin’s hunger for knowledge, persistence in acquiring it, and the sense of play that he brings to everything he does that will ensure his continued success in college and beyond.

College attending: Elon University

College attending: Howard University

Major or area of interest: undecided

Major or area of interest: broadcast journalism

Senior prizes: Headmaster’s Merit Award

Senior prizes: Headmaster’s Merit Award, 4-Year Varsity Letter

To Duncan community and family are synonymous with Millbrook, and his experience at Elon so far has been much the same. Off to a strong start in classes, he is looking forward to playing club hockey and enjoying all that college life has to offer. While at Millbrook Duncan’s role as student body president helped develop confidence and comfort in speaking in front of large groups, so it is no surprise that he aims to choose a career path that keeps him actively engaged with people. He credits Mr. Clizbe’s Constitutional Law class as where he learned to effectively defend his arguments in the face of opposition and believes those skills will carry him far, at Elon and beyond.

Bria is settling in and getting comfortable in her new city setting at Howard University in Washington DC. Despite the fact that Howard has almost 10,000 undergraduates, Bria sees many similarities to Millbrook, particularly in their sense of community and how students are pushed to try new things and never settle. “Millbrook gave me a sense of self. I was able to develop as an individual in a small, accepting community. I was granted the chance to learn my level of comfort and how to step outside of that. College is no time to forget that.” Bria is hoping to have professors whose dedication rivals that of her history teacher at Millbrook, Mr.Hart. “I wish that all of my college professors will take the time to make sure that I confidently know the material. [Mr. Hart] was always patient and enthusiastic about my performance and improvement as a student. Donuts during review sessions were a nice perk too.”

George DeWitt College attending: New York University

Julia May College attending: Southern Methodist University Major or area of interest: pre-medicine Senior prizes: Cum Laude, Sportsmanship Cup, McSweeney Tour Guide Award Fully expecting to be challenged in SMU’s rigorous pre-med program, Julia has felt very well prepared after taking Advanced Biology in her VIth form year with Mrs. Stewart. Hard at work this fall, she is excited not only about her classes but also about opportunities she will have to volunteer in hospitals, shadow doctors and more. She’s confident in her success not simply because she’s willing to work hard, but because she has learned how to self-advocate. “This is the first time I’m in a class with more than 18 students, and if you want answers you have to speak up. I understand that with a class of 75+ students it’s hard for professors to remember names, so I visit office hours as much as I can so they at least know who I am and what my questions are.” She gives credit to both Mr. and Mrs. Clizbe, who each taught her the importance of questioning and pushing beyond her self-ascribed limits.

Major or area of interest: mechanical engineering and entrepreneurship Senior prizes: Cum Laude Attending NYU in the heart of New York City, George is looking forward to terrific cultural experiences and plentiful internship opportunities. He selected NYU because of its rigorous curriculum and opportunities to engage, and he’s already looking forward to an invention group project this fall and a “hands on” engineering design course next spring. George is focused on mechanical engineering and entrepreneurship—no surprise considering his excellent contributions to Millbrook’s Engingeering Club and his very successful CES project involving the conversion of a gasoline truck to electric. George puts 110% effort into everything he does, and he feels that the perseverance that he learned and practiced here will carry him far. George credits Mr. Somerset Waters for challenging him, both in the classroom and out—through classwork in Advanced Physics and long hikes and other outdoor experiences, Mr. Waters always encouraged George and others to raise the bar and pursue their goals.

Michael Cronin III

College attending: Sewanee University of the South

College attending: University of Richmond

Major or area of interest: education

Major or area of interest: undecided

Senior prizes: Community Service Cup, Photography Award

Senior prizes: Cum Laude

Recognized by the entire faculty for her dedication to the Millbrook community through service to others, it’s no surprise that Mansell wants to continue being an active member and integral part of a community in college. Sewanee University of the South is just the right size and offers a similar community feel, making Mansell feel right at home. She brings to Sewanee the confidence she gained at Millbrook and the assertiveness to take advantage of all that is available to her—from tutoring in the writing center to hiking in the beautiful surrounding area. Mansell is a go-getter who will someday make a fantastic teacher herself. She says she will model one of her favorite teachers, Ms. Kathy Havard, “because her enthusiasm for everything she taught us made me want to work harder and always helped me to better understand the topic.”

During his time at Millbrook, Michael was adept at the three R’s: reading, writing, and ‘rithmetic. His advisor, Drew Casertano, proposes that he was especially good at the three S’s: serious, skeptical, and scholarly. Known for being a serious student, Michael is curious, motivated, and always ready to engage in a good debate. He likes to question—“prove it,” “show me,” and “explain that” are all part of his intellectual repertoire. And though serious in attitude and effort, Michael will allow a wry smile, but only when the joke is nuanced and worthy. Michael is a budding scholar. He enjoys ideas; he likes to think; he appreciates the life of the mind. For these reasons and his excellent academic achievement, Michael earned Millbrook’s highest academic distinction and will surely succeed at the University of Richmond.

Delaney Bailey

Parachute A dancer, singer, and actor, Delaney was inspired to create a performance art piece entirely from scratch.

Her final CES presentation was a single choreographed musical piece that included a dance, that she danced, set to music that she sung, over instruments that were her own feet tapping! Deliciously original, Delaney overcame challenges that required technical mastery of vastly different skills: the editing of vocals and taps together, technical dance, elements of choreography, and vocal precision.

particular discipline and pursue ideas that have germinated and blossomed as a result of their experiences at Millbrook. At the beginning of their senior year, each senior submits to the relevant academic department an essential question he or she plans to investigate. Upon department approval, each student then spends a minimum of 15 hours researching, developing, and refining the project over the course of the year. Seniors are required to present their findings in a formal presentation to their peers and Millbrook faculty,

George DeWitt

No Engine, No Emissions, No Problem George began planning for his CES in his junior year. He purchased a truck, removed the engine and all gasoline and combustion-related components, and installed an electric motor and many batteries.

and a panel of faculty evaluators awards honors to those CES projects that were original, creative, and beyond the standard requirements. The largest percentage of honors presentations in the history of the CES program is represented on these four pages.

Mansell Ambrose

Grown Ups

Inspired by Brandon Stantons Humans of New York blog, Mansell spent months interviewing and photographing faculty and staff all over campus, asking them about a time in their life that contributed to their “growing up.”

Her goal: to tell a meaningful, and possibly revealing, story both through her photographs and through the words of her subjects. Mansell believes this project was the perfect culmination of her time at Millbrook, as faculty members here have helped her grow into the person she is today. Her portraits and interviews, which were framed and installed in the chapel, gave viewers a chance to learn more about the people they learn from or work with every day at school.

24

Millbrook School

With extensive help from his father and other local parts sellers and mechanics, George likely spent hundreds of hours on this project—well above the 15 hour minimum—and overcame numerous obstacles along the way. His presentation was engaging, accessible, well-rehearsed, informative, and interactive, as those in attendance looked under the hood and applauded his green truck in a red body.

Keiichiro Murata

Todesspiel

Keiichiro studied three Edgar Allan Poe short stories, and he identified key stylistic elements in them, which he then used to write his own creative short story.

Sheldon Freeman

The Murder of Emmett Till

Diego Márquez Todeschini

3 Horror Movies Diego created three short horror films that each explored a specific filmmaking technique.

He successfully used visuals, sound design, and narration to put the audience on the edge of their seats and even produce a few shrieks in the Chelsea Morrison Theater.

After finishing a unit on race and justice in his VI form English class, Sheldon decided to further investigate the details behind the murder of Emmett Till in Mississippi in 1955.

In his research paper and following presentation to the school, he discussed not only the facts of the case but also the national reaction that ensued and how coverage by black newspapers at the time generated much needed scrutiny on civil rights in Mississippi and across the country.

Christina Hughes

Pieces of a Dream Christina sought to discover if it was possible to cohesively combine six different technical dance genres into one working piece of choreography.

Taking notes in her choreography journal and exploring her bounds as a choreographer, she was met with the challenge of how to make varied movement (hip hop vs. ballet, for example) work together. By the end of her CES experience, Christina’s choreography journal alone was a piece of artwork full of thoughts, daydreams, inspirations, movement maps, photos and histories of dance greats who created similar projects. Her project earned honors based on its originality and thoroughness and her execution in front of a live audience, which demonstrated technical mastery and full production value in her consideration of lights, effects, costume, hair and makeup, music, additional casting, and more.

Katja Galli

Cien Años de Literatura Katja is an avid student of Spanish language, culture, and literature.

She applied that passion to her CES and explored 20th century literature in Argentina, making connections between this literature and Argentina’s economic highs and lows. Katja’s honors-earning presentation was made completely in Spanish.

Bria Horsley

The Talk with Your Host Bria’s vision was to create a news podcast about student life at Millbrook—athletics, activities, arts, and academics.

She showcased newsy segments interspersed with student interviews, filming and editing each segment using school equipment and skills she developed through tutorials in the Communications Office. She hoped her broadcasts could be beneficial and informative for anyone with a connection to Millbrook: a current student, a prospective student or alumni.

CES Program

Lucy Papachristou

I Like My Humor Sunny-Side Up Lucy compiled an “all-star” edition of her humor magazine, The Yolk. Wanting to go out with a bang, she thought what better way than giving some very funny people a forum for their talents.

According to Lucy, “The Yolk was an open mic night with a spotlight and a microphone for anyone who wanted to say something.” She learned two important things from running The Yolk. “The first was how incredibly funny some people were. The greatest feeling was getting a submission from some really quiet kid that turned out to be hilarious. Who knew? The second thing was how frustrating journalism can be, as a couple of days before every issue I was scrambling to fill empty spaces, going around to all the dorms and knocking on doors, sending frantic emails.” Lucy published 6 issues of The Yolk during her senior year.

Julia May

Moving Forward in a Backwards World Julia’s history CES was entitled Orton Gillingham and Early Childhood Education, and in her paper she argued that elementary schools are teaching reading in a fundamentally flawed way, and further that all students, but especially dyslexic kids, would benefit from a very simple change in the approach.

She advocated for the use of the Orton Gillingham Method of teaching reading. Her presentation during the CES fesitival demonstrated a remarkable command both of her material, as she investigated the subject with a combination of passion, humor, and rationality that called for the attention and respect of every member of the audience.

26

Millbrook School

Hoa “Ambie” Nguyen

Keep Calm and Recycle On Ambie’s goal was to create a model for the amount of plastic that ends up in landfills in the United States, and through her model she predicted the production rate of plastic waste over time and the amount of plastic waste present in landfills 10 years from today.

She mastered the subject, which was evident to all who saw her presentation, as she explained the problem through a clearly and confidently delivered presentation that included her mathematical calculations written without a script in the moment of her presentation.

John Norfleet

Great Blue Heron Camera Live Feed Born out of his interest in citizen science and conservation, John’s brainchild was to capture on camera the activities of a few of Millbrook’s Great Blue herons in their nest, 90-feet above the floor of the Trevor Zoo.

The result was a live video stream that captured the attention of thousands, nearby and around the world, as two herons, Heather and Hudson, mated, laid five eggs, and cared for the chicks until they fledged. John collaborated with the Trevor Zoo staff, local Millbrook friends, and alumnus Dan Cohen ’86 during this incredibly unique project that gained nationwide attention.

CES Program

Caroline Ronveaux

Blood Drive

Impressed by previous blood drives held at Millbrook, Caroline took on the the large task of planning and managing the spring blood drive this year.

She generated announcements and advertisements, signed up students and faculty, and hosted the Red Cross team the day of the drive. She did all of this in the most professional way, meeting deadlines, responding to questions, and ultimately generating near record-breaking results.

Dustin Sloan Daniel Pollis

More Than You Know Dan seemed to effortlessly put his love of photography and of Millbrook into his CES project, a project that grew from concepts he learned in Mr. Powers’ economics class.

The class was discussing brands and the reasons why people are eager to display a particular brand on an item of clothing, a car, a computer and so on. This discussion made him think about the other stories our possessions tell. He decided to explore this interest through photography and asked his peers to share objects that have a special significance in their lives. He paired these images with audio recordings of the stories that endear these objects to their owners and set the whole thing to a soundtrack by Dana Foote, class of 2013. His video presentation was an insightful and beautiful look into the deeper meaning behind each image.

Giulio Preti

2000 Years Later, A Lesson from Rome A one-year student at Millbrook, Guilio’s CES presentation was especially impressive since his first language is Italian, and he presented in English while reading passages in Latin.

His CES was a high-level extension of his passion for Latin, as he translated Vergil passages and then connected them to religion and social hierarchy in the modern world. Guilo’s CES was truly a scholarly presentation from start to finish.

A Cliff Hanger, 3D Animation Using self-taught 3D modeling and video editing computer software, Dustin created a humorous and thought-provoking 3D animated video of a cubicle worker who attempts to break free from his monotonous workplace.

The premise is a clever and funny daydream built around a character conceived and designed by Dustin, who regularly enjoys pushing technical and conceptual limits in his arts projects. While Dustin studied ceramics at Millbrook, this animation project relied on skills he perfected on digital platforms in graphics work at the Trevor Zoo.

Laurel Stine

Red Crocahogs & Other Imaginary Animals A stalwart supporter of Millbrook’s environmental efforts and a 4-year zooie and zoo curator, Laurel’s CES was the perfect expression of her passions.

She began by exploring different animal species that she believes have a good chance of long-term survival in today’s world. Her goal: to create her own species by selectively mixing together strongest qualities from each of these animals. In-depth research about the habits, constitutions, and biological diversity of each animal was a large part of her project, and ultimately she created her own new species, reclassified them, and drew dictionary-style images of what they would look like. Her CES presentation concluded how genetically right these animals would be for our future planet.

West Dormitory On Friday, October 3rd the community gathered in West Hall’s main lobby to officially celebrate the opening of our newest dormitory. Although Millbrook became co-educational in 1971, West Hall is the first dormitory on campus that was built specifically to house our female students.

This magnificent new dormitory, located between Burton Hall and the Mills Athletic Center and just to the west of the chapel, houses 44 boarding students and 24 day students and includes 4 faculty residences. Accommodations include spacious mud rooms, a modern kitchen for student use, a “phone booth” for private and emergency calls, washers and dryers in each bathroom, and much more. West Hall was constructed to the highest environmental standards, as are all new building projects on campus, with a ground coupled heat source system, passive house standards for insulation, recycled materials, bamboo floors, and local sourcing for a variety of building materials. Millbrook’s campus continues to develop in ways that are consistent with our mission and support our ambition to enroll just over 300 students. The construction of West Hall greatly supports this growth.

Solar Installation Our mission of environmental stewardship has led us to boldly commit to reaching carbon neutrality by 2020, and the construction of our solar photovoltaic power field is a powerful step in that direction. Once connected to the electric grid (January of 2015), we will be able to lower our greenhouse gas emissions by 30%—a huge step towards carbon neutrality. Construction of the 7-acre solar field with 5,852 panels was completed this summer and will be able to produce 2.2 million kWh/year. Beginning in 2015, we expect that Millbrook will be spending at least $30-40,000 less for its electricity each year due to a 20-year power purchase agreement that will lock in our electric rates. In addition to the environmental and savings benefits, the solar installation will be an additional educational resource for our students. One VI former enrolled in our new Independent Research seminar is already analyzing how solar energy will actually be produced by our system and the many benefits Millbrook will reap. He will present his findings to the school community in the spring.

Climate Change Exhibit Millbrook’s new Climate Change Exhibit opened in the main hall of the Jonathan ’65 and Jane Meigs Education Center at the Trevor Zoo just in time for Alumni Weekend in June. Jono and Jane led the charge on this beautifully designed educational project, and at the opening they explained the process of creating the many informational panels, demonstrated the centerpiece of the exhibit (a fully interactive and customizable iGlobe), and encouraged the audience to approach the complex issue of climate change with an open mind. The Climate Change Exhibit was made possible through the generosity of the Richards family (Tim ’76, Janet, and Sam ’11), and they were thrilled to celebrate the opening along with other stalwart supporters of the Trevor Zoo including Brad Mills ’44, Dr. Tom Lovejoy ’59, and former headmaster Don Abbott ’59.

Faculty Milestones: Bob Anthony ’65 40 YEARS Bob Anthony is truly Mr. Millbrook. He has been and continues to be the second longest tenured faculty member in Millbrook’s history. A student under the founding headmaster, he has served four of the six who have lead the school. Bob is truly “the tie that binds”, the person who connects all Millbrook generations and who is universally admired for his extraordinary commitment to the school and his exceptional efforts to move it forward. He is truly “conservatively progressive.” When awarding the Millbrook Medal at Alumni Weekend in June, Bob proclaimed that Bill Crossman bleeds Millbrook blue. Well, “Bob bleeds Millbrook blue, and he turns it into Millbrook green,” which is a gift to his beloved school and to us all.

Board of T ru st e e s N e w s We welcome our two newest members to the Board of Trustees, as we extend our deep appreciation and sincerest thanks to departing members, Cynthia Gray P’07, ’11 and Bradley Reifler P’08 ’10, ’14.

Morgan Conrad ’99 appointed May 2014

Following his graduation from Millbrook, Mr. Conrad went on to Denison University, where he earned his BA in Economics. He began his career in finance as an analyst for John A. Levine & Co. before moving on to CIBC World Markets in New York City as an analyst in the Leverage Finance & Capital Markets groups. In 2008 Morgan became vice president at Atlantic Street Capital, a distressed and special situations focused private equity fund. There he focused on modeling and financial diligence and, later on, company growth or turnaround on a case-by-case basis. In 2011 he founded Morgan Investment Co., which is a holding company for the private companies in which he invests—predominantly lower middle market and entrepreneurially built. As a side project, he works with a number of former Millbrook classmates, advising them on acquisition, financing, management, and other general business matters. Morgan travels a great deal for business and for pleasure, and has been travelling back to campus more frequently recently for board of trustees meetings.

Lisa Selz P ’12, ’17 appointed October 2014

Mrs. Selz has been part of the Millbrook community since 2008 when her son, Alexander, began as a III former. Alexander ’12 is now a junior at New York University crafting his own major in engineering, design, and math. Younger son Andre joined Millbrook this fall as a IVth former. Mrs. Selz grew up in Mt. Kisco, NY and attended Bedford Rippowam-Cisqua School, Ethel Walker School and Goucher College, where she received a BA in Latin. Having worked in banking and retail in NYC for twenty years, she now serves on several boards including her alma maters as well as Allen Stevenson School, LaGuardia Community College, and the Nature Conservancy of New York. She and her husband Bernard live in New York City. Mrs. Selz has just begun her committee work at Millbrook and serves on the Student Life and Development Committees. In her new capacity as a board member she is excited to serve the school—the students, the faculty, and the administration—and contribute to the important decisions that will keep Millbrook on its current trajectory. As a parent of both an alumnus and a current student, she is particularly keen on attracting and retaining the best faculty, who make the experience as good as it possibly can be for our students.

Alumni Achievement Award This year’s Alumni Achievement Award goes to the classes of 1994-2013 for their outstanding and impressive win in the February Face-off. With 27.5% of our young alumni making donations to the Annual Fund in February, their Millbrook pride and determination soared past the other participating schools including Hotchkiss, Salisbury, Taft, Westminster, Berkshire, Avon, Trinity-Pawling, Williston, and The Gunnery.

We’re afraid we’ve scared off the competition…

stay tuned for the Headmaster’s Challenge!
