Millbrook School
Development Report
It is a great pleasure for me to formally acknowledge the generosity of so many members of the Millbrook family during the past year. The collective support to Millbrook — which totaled more than $6.6 million in 2011-2012 — is deeply appreciated as we advance our school. You helped to establish another record for the Annual Fund in 2011-2012 by contributing a total of $1,521,663. You also provided the capital leadership that enabled the board of trustees to vote to move ahead with two major building projects over the summer: the complete renovation of the Barn into a modern student center and the construction of four new squash courts in the Mills Athletic Center to complement the existing Reese Courts. At this time both projects are well underway and are slated to be ready for use this fall. The board has identified future capital priorities including a new dormitory and a new dining hall, both of which await further planning and additional funding. From my seat as director of development for the past 38 years, and now from my new vantage point as assistant to the headmaster for external relations, I am very proud of Millbrook’s past, and I am incredibly excited about the Millbrook of today and tomorrow. Millbrook’s future begins now. My colleagues and I look forward to working with you to realize our goals. Your support truly embodies the school’s motto, Non Sibi Sed Cunctis (Not for oneself, but for all). Thank you again for your continued interest and support.
Robert W. Anthony ’65 Assistant to the Headmaster for External Relations
ANNUAL REPORT 2011-2012 3
Dear Members of the Millbrook Community, As I write my final letter to the Millbrook School community with news of another banner year of financial support for our school, I am reminded once again of the important difference our donors make in the ability of Millbrook School to provide our boys and girls with an outstanding educational opportunity. We’ve again exceeded last year’s total for the Annual Fund and have set new records for giving and participation. On behalf of the board of trustees, I want to thank each and every one of you who gave to the Annual Fund, our endowment fund, or the various capital projects on campus. I also want to thank our parent and alumni volunteers who gave of their time to make Millbrook a better, more resourceful place for the kids.

My connection to Millbrook School began with my arrival on campus in the back seat of our family station wagon in September of 1972. The place was not quite as spiffy as it is today. Taking note of some peeling paint and areas sorely in need of renovation, my mother commented that the great universities of Europe also had a well-worn look. When touring a school, it is said that the parents focus on the buildings, and the kids look at the other kids. So, true to form, I cared nothing for the buildings and moved directly toward meeting the other students (all boys that first weekend) and the adults who ran the place. I was filled with anticipation and anxiety but was very quickly put at ease by the warmth and friendliness of the dorm leaders and faculty members I met in those early hours and days. The other new boys were just as nervous as me, so it was comforting to be with them. The returning students were kind, although somewhat amused at our general un-worldliness. On that first Monday a yellow bus arrived at what is now the Holbrook parking lot, bringing our day students, including 23 girls, to campus. We were off to a brand new school year under the care of a deeply committed faculty, and I began a 40-year love affair with Millbrook School.
and making progress on the improvement of our overall academic achievement as an institution. In September we will open a totally renovated Barn and will be moving forward, during the next several years, with significant improvements to our residential facilities, including new dormitories and a new dining hall.
As an alumni volunteer, a trustee, and leader of the board, I have been a part of the remarkable transformation of our facilities and financial capabilities over the last two decades, all the while keeping the close knit community and very supportive faculty that I found in 1972. During this period, we have been blessed with a strong school leader in Drew Casertano, whose deep understanding of our mission and ambitious program for renewal has achieved great results for our students and their families. As always, there is more to do, and we are moving steadily toward our goal of a net endowment of $100,000 per student
Your support has made possible all of our success at Millbrook School, and I invite you to continue with us to the next chapter of this wonderful story.
Millbrook School
Fortunately, Drew Casertano is committed to leading the school through the realization of these exciting goals, and the board of trustees, under the very capable leadership of Bill Menard ’78, is poised to oversee the institution with good governance, thoughtful strategy, and capital. I have worked with Bill since he joined the board in 1993, and I know he will take the board and the school to a new level of excellence and achievement. He is the father of three Millbrook graduates and has been a trustee leader in the areas of development, school life, and strategic planning. Beyond an impressive resume as an attorney and entrepreneur, he is the vice chair of the Edward E. Ford Foundation, an organization dedicated to strengthening and supporting independent schools. He is deeply committed to supporting the faculty at Millbrook and is a living example of our motto Non Sibi Sed Cunctis – “Not for oneself, but for all.”
Thanks again.

chapel to also recognize Farnham’s dedication and powerful influence, particularly as a faculty member at the school for many years. Farnham was, in fact, Caroline’s history teacher, and she lauded his wisdom and grace in the classroom. There were other very special events that took place during Alumni Weekend, including dedications for two Millbrook alumni who lost their lives at a young age. Taylor Vit, class of 2007, was honored at a tree dedication next to the soccer field where he played as a Millbrook Mustang. Taylor passed away in a tragic car accident in October of 2010, and nearly 40 of his Millbrook classmates returned to this Alumni Weekend to honor his memory and recount stories, which spoke of Taylor’s work ethic, competitive spirit, intelligence, leadership, compassion, and friendship.
Members of the class of 1962 share many memories from their time at Millbrook fifty years ago.
2012 Alumni Weekend Alumni from all classes were invited to attend the 2012 Alumni Weekend, and most reunion classes saw a wonderful turnout for the many activities that allow alumni to reconnect with each other while rediscovering all that they love about their alma mater. On June 8th and 9th Millbrook alumni enjoyed special celebratory feasts (for the 25th and 50th reunion classes), a casual dinner gathering under the tent on Pulling Quad followed by music and dancing, master classes in science and in the arts, a wine tasting courtesy of Ted Elliott ’62, and the traditional Alumni Parade across the Flagler Quad to the Flagler Memorial Chapel. It

was in the chapel that Director of Development and Alumni Affairs Robert Anthony ’65 awarded Farnham F. Collins, Millbrook class of 1953, with a Millbrook Medal for his distinguished service to his school. After Bob Anthony presented Farnham with a special citation, Caroline Wamsler ’87, a current Millbrook trustee, spoke to the crowd of more than 200 gathered in the
Also honored, at what would have been her 25th reunion, was Emily Roosevelt, class of 1987. Emily also died suddenly in 2010, and it was at that time that her family decided that the best way to remember her would be to establish an ongoing prize for current students at Millbrook, students who exemplify public service, inquisitiveness, and determination. Two students — Winston Boney ’12 and Hope Nicyper-Meryman ’12 — have been awarded the Roosevelt Prize for Public Service thus far. But the ceremony, next to a beautiful tree just outside the chapel, was to honor Emily’s own empathy, inquisitiveness, courage, and determination, which defined her daily life. Another special event celebrated the culmination of 75 years of the Trevor Zoo. The Chelsea Morrison Theater was crowded on Saturday night as former zooies and non-zooies alike came to watch the film Across the Pond, produced and directed by alumnus Daniel Cohen ’86 and co-produced by the Director of Communications Michelle Blayney. The film recounts the history of the Trevor Zoo, from its founding by Frank Trevor through Jono Meigs’ 40-year tenure, and includes a tribute to Jane Meigs’ leadership in environmental stewardship and conservation
2012 Alumni Weekend education and an overview of both the strong academic and community service aspects of this unique facility. It also highlights alumni who have been inspired to pursue careers in zoology, biology and conservation, veterinary medicine, and more. The zoo film will be available on on DVD at the Trevor Zoo and in the School Store in the near future. The entire weekend was an enjoyable and meaningful celebration, full of good memories, and the Millbrook faculty and members of the Alumni Office were delighted to welcome everyone back!

In every way, he was a master teacher. He was a master in another area of his life, as well, as he found time to serve as a Joint Master of the Millbrook Hunt for thirty years. The Hunt used to meet at Millbrook School, and when Farnie taught, he would come in from hunting in time to teach his class whether

He served as a trustee until 2000 and continues as an honorary trustee to this day. S p e c i al D e d i cat i o n s Words By The Reverend Cam Hardy on Saturday, June 9th
Emily Roosevelt
Taylor Vit
It has been said of Emily that empathy, inquisitiveness, courage, and determination defined her. Though she quietly expressed this at Millbrook, it clearly blossomed in her adult life and took many forms, but could be best expressed in her passion for public service. This is why, too, her family has decided to honor her by an annual commencement award in her name for public service.
We are honored that you are here, Kathie and Bill, Zack and Cameron. It is strengthening for all of us that you would make the journey up here, because it cannot be easy. But it is good for all of us to be bound in remembrance of your son and brother Taylor, our friend and classmate and student and teammate. All of what we remember of him, a small portion of which was shared today, is extraordinarily good.
This tree is another beautiful reminder that her spirit continues to live and grow in this community through the seasons and years. As a memorial, I ask that we call upon that which is our source of power and strength and compassion our lives, who from ancient times has joined us in covenants and constitutions, anything by which we create a humane society; we ask for your presence and blessing upon us who think of Emily and who are inspired to serve the common good in our own ways. That we may do so in joy and remembrance.
At this dedication of a living tree that stands between the two places of happiness and strength and integrity for Taylor, we ask for God’s presence and blessing, as we express our gratitude for the gift of Taylor’s many virtues expressed here, not the least of which were his genuine care and understanding of his many friends, his devotion to his family and community, and his personal strength in trying new ideas, while he stood steadfastly with what was right and good in life. For being a consummate leader, who did not take himself so seriously that he didn’t truly enjoy life, we give our thanks. As this tree continues to grow through the seasons, may it be constant and gentle reminder of the powerful legacy of the life of Taylor Wyatt Vit in ours.

Millbrook School
Commencement On Sunday, May 27th, Millbrook parents, family members, students, faculty, and staff celebrated the class of 2012 and all that they had accomplished during their time at Millbrook. Deep-rooted traditions made commencement activities especially meaningful. Prize Night was a celebration of every graduate, as parents and students gathered for one last dinner together under the tent on Pulling Quad. At the Last Night Ceremony, faculty and students gathered together in the chapel one final time for words of farewell, and the following morning just before their graduation ceremony began, young men donned Millbrook ties and the young women fastened necklaces engraved with Millbrook’s shield, gifts from the Alumni Office. Peter Chapman (father of Eliza ’12 and Molly ’11) delivered a sage, witty, and memorable Commencement Address encouraging the graduating class to fail. He quoted Robert Kennedy saying, “Those who dare to fail greatly can achieve greatly.” After
enjoying the Sixth Form Commencement Address by Sam Jaffe, seventy-eight graduates proudly took to the stage to receive their diplomas from Headmaster Drew Casertano and Chairman of the Board Bill Menard ’78. Bill stood proudly as his two youngest children – twins Teddy and Davis – followed in their dad’s and sister’s (Lindsey ’09) footsteps across the graduation stage. Many more precious moments – including the shedding of a few tears – came as the graduates filed past their teachers in the receiving line on the Flagler lawn as well-wishes and hugs were doled out in a continuous stream. Never is it more apparent than during these final farewells the incredible connections shared between Millbrook students and faculty – connections that will last a lifetime.

Sam Jaffe
Major or area of interest: biochemistry/ pre-medicine
College attending: Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music, Tisch School of the Arts, NYU, New York City
Senior prizes: Summa Cum Laude, Cum Laude, Science Prize, Blaine History Essay Runner-up
Major or area of interest: music production, theory and business
Arianne chose to attend Villanova because it offers a great community as well as excellent academics and extracurriculars. She believes she will be successful because of what she is taking away from Millbrook: the belief that she can succeed as long as she works hard and never ignores an opportunity to learn something new. She hopes to have college professors who will be like Mr. Powers (her Millbrook history teacher). “Going into his Anthropology class, I was always looking forward to the next great discussion, and leaving his class I always knew I had learned something unusual and viewed something from a different perspective.”

Senior prizes: Peter Jon Wallace Commencement Prize, Art History Prize, Music Prize, Cum Laude Sam is looking forward to using his own music to develop his “brand” as he studies music and the music industry over the next four years at NYU. Having learned to be comfortably independent while at Millbrook, Sam is confident in his skills and abilities moving forward as a “performer entrepreneur.” He gives much credit to Mr. Steve Siktberg, who had the greatest influence on Sam since he arrived at Millbrook as a III former. “He was one of the first people to forwardly believe in me as a musician and encourage me to pursue music seriously. His laid back approach to teaching and playing illustrated to me… [the importance of ] a good set of ears and the ability to connect with other musicians on a personal level.”

Senior Profiles
Chloe Gbai College attending: Gallatin School of Individualized Study, NYU, New York City Major or area of interest: will craft an individualized program over 4 years, beginning with video activism, documentary film, and political theater Senior prize: Art History Award, Theater Award, Cum Laude, Four-Year Varsity Letter Winner NYU’s program of individualized study is the perfect fit, and Chloe is excited at the opportunity to combine all the things she loves – community service, film, English, art history, and theater – in a major that truly represents who she is and what she enjoys. That self-awareness, as well as a deep respect for others, was born at Millbrook, where she feels students are encouraged to be environmentally, socially, and academically aware and responsible. Chloe also feels that all of her Millbrook teachers had a big impact on her life, but probably no one more than Mrs. Martha Clizbe, who, as her dorm parent, teacher, and advisor “was like a second mother. I would love to find another [Mrs. Clizbe] in college, although I find it unlikely.”
Alex Selz College attending: NYU, New York City Major or area of interest: undecided but perhaps liberal arts, engineering, or design Senior Prizes: Cum Laude, Four-Year Varsity Letter Winner Described by his advisor, Mr. Todd Feitelson, as having a quirky creativity and mischievous intellectualism, Alex is a student who constantly looks for connections to other ideas. In the classroom at Millbrook, he was always willing to share his ideas and push the entire class to think better – he’s looking forward to continuing this only at a much bigger school in a much bigger city, as he puts his skills to practice “navigating life.” Mr. Feitelson (also his calculus teacher) and Mr. Waters (his astronomy teacher) were influential because of their “straightforward and interesting” teaching styles.

Aldin Medunjanin College attending: Skidmore College, Saratoga Springs, NY Major or area of interest: exercise science Senior prizes: Class of 1978 Award, Frederick W. Knutson Trophy Aldin is excited about attending Skidmore, an excellent small liberal arts college, in the fall. He is expecting to be challenged both in the classroom and on the athletic fields and courts. He is ready for those challenges, feeling prepared by his experience at Millbrook where he learned not only to work hard, but also to form relationships with a wide variety of people. It was his connections at Millbrook that truly made his high school experience that much more rewarding. Aldin credits his English teacher Mrs. Erin Downs for creating “the perfect balance between learning and humor” in her class, which incorporated plenty of creative writing and poetry, and he will miss her class next year!

Major or area of interest: fine arts through an interdisciplinary approach Senior prizes: Nathaniel B. Abbott Cup, Cum Laude, Blaine History Essay Runner-up A student who “loves testing many waters,” Paige is looking forward to exploring the interdisciplinary approach offered at the Art Institute of Chicago, where she will mix new forms of art media and become an active part of the professional art world. She will bring to Chicago the curiosity that drove her to succeed at Millbrook and the confidence to take advantage of every opportunity. She appreciates how Mr. Mark Clizbe, Mrs. Martha Clizbe, and Mr. Bill Hardy taught her to question everything and see things from many different angles, and how Mrs. Clizbe, her advisor, helped her become an independent problem-solver. Having worked one-on-one with Mr. Hardy both in studying drawing and in curating a Warner Gallery exhibit, Paige credits him for helping her “realize that everything is subjective and nothing in life is limited.”

Senior Profiles Thea Lewis College attending: Barnard College at Columbia University, New York City Major or area of interest: undecided and looking forward to figuring out what is intriguing enough to dedicate four years of learning to Senior Prizes: English Writing Prize, Dance Prize
Teddy Menard College attending: Pitzer College, Claremont, CA Major or area of interest: undecided, English Education and music will be areas to explore
A performer, artist, writer, and all-around curious student, Thea will be right at home at Barnard College, even though she’ll be far from her parents’ home in Atlanta, Georgia. She is excited to attend such a strong women’s college while still having the ability to access all the resources of a large research university. Her initial plans include taking courses in poetry, studying with the top dance teachers in New York City through Barnard’s dance program, and engaging in photography at Columbia. Through it all she will apply her herself with patience, a virtue she believes she learned at Millbrook. “I [also] learned to value opinions different from my own. I learned how to appreciate people I originally felt I had very little in common with.” Next year she will miss Mr. Powers, who always provoked questions and new ways of thinking, and Mr. Hardy, who was an inspiration and mentor. Perhaps most of all, she will best use the lessons taught by Mr. Clizbe, “Mr. Clizbe never helped me take the easy way out. He helped me listen, understand, [and] breath, and, ultimately, he helped me laugh at myself.”
Senior prizes: Music Prize, Cum Laude Teddy was drawn to Pitzer College for its rigorous academics and five core values, which mirror closely the values Teddy absorbed and practiced at Millbrook – social responsibility, intercultural understanding, interdisciplinary learning, student engagement, and environmental sustainability. He credits Millbrook for helping him to learn how to engage successfully within a community, and he plans to establish strong relationships, invest himself in activities, and participate actively in his college classrooms. He hopes to learn from professors who present their subject matter in an interesting, informative, and challenging manner, just as Mr. John Siegenthaler did in his classes here.

Royce Paris College attending: Marist College, Poughkeepsie, NY Major or area of interest: undecided but looking forward to exploring everything Senior prize: Headmaster’s Merit Award Royce is never one to shy away from a challenge. As a team leader on the boys varsity basketball team for the past two years and all-school prefect his senior year, Royce learned a lot about leading with diplomacy and grace, gaining trust from his peers, and how to live every day with thoughtful consideration of those around him. We fully expect that he will bring his leadership skills to both the classroom and the basketball court at Marist. Royce credits the faculty at Millbrook for inspiring him, not only with their knowledge of their subject matter, but more importantly with their presence outside the classroom and the examples they set, as they gave up most of their personal time to live with the students, provide extra time and help with school work, and participate in all school events.

Greta Ohaus College attending: Cornell University, Ithaca, NY Major or area of interest: fashion design and fiber science Senior prizes: Drawing & Painting Award, Cum Laude A writer and blogger, artist, mathematician, scientist, art historian, and fluent Spanish speaker, Greta will pursue above all of this her passion for fashion when she attends Cornell this fall. During her four years here, Greta found that Millbrook provided a safe place where she was allowed to discover who she really was. She tried a little bit of everything, and while she could look for guidance, she was given space to really learn for herself. Since Mr. Bill Hardy opened her eyes to the world and language of art, she has learned to put her creativity into the physical world. Hopefully someday in the near future, Millbrook students will be wearing an original Greta Ohaus design.

Ji Yoon Lee College attending: NYU, New York City Major or area of interest: biology, in order to pursue her dream of becoming a vet
Davis Menard College attending: Pomona College, Claremont, CA following a gap year Major or area of interest: liberal arts, a diverse program of study Senior prizes: English Writing Prize, Cum Laude Davis is taking an increasingly popular path to college via a gap year, which will include travel abroad and immersion in different cultures, music, writing, and ceramics. He is looking forward to settling at Pomona next fall and becoming a part of its wholly academic community with a similar dynamic to what he experienced at Millbrook, particularly the closeness between the students and faculty. One Millbrook faculty member who had a considerable influence on Davis was Mr. John Siegenthaler, his advisor, teacher, coach, dorm parent, and college counselor. “He taught me a lot in these different areas, but also how to be an upstanding person and to relish every opportunity you have, both for yourself and for others.”
Senior prizes: Sykes Mathematics Prize, Cum Laude Ji Yoon is moving not very far from Millbrook, but she will continue to be far from home — 6,889 miles, in fact, from her home in Daegu, Korea. A four-year senior, Ji Yoon has learned to be comfortable living away from home, and, due to her dogged determination to be involved in as many things as possible, she has learned a whole lot more. Her advisor, Mrs. Cynthia McWilliams, recalled during Prize Night Ji Yoon’s V form year when she took 7 classes (including 2 honors and an AP), was a dorm leader, head of the zoo community service, and a member of both SCAPE and Model U.N. Going forward, she will undoubtedly put to good use the enthusiasm and joyfulness which are a natural part of who she is. Ji Yoon credits Millbrook, and specifically Mrs. McWilliams, for teaching her self-confidence and independence, and as she heads to college, she has full confidence in her own ability to search out the answers to her questions and make good and thoughtful decisions.

When the ground is white And the powder sticks to my boots I remember what it’s like to walk on the clouds. When the wind dusts my cheeks with rose And I come home to the smell of hot chocolate, I remember what it used to be like When I dug up worms and danced around With a crown on my head. When the sun seeps through the windows in perfect blocks And Daddy lights the fire I remember imagination, creation and building snowmen with mommy. When the snow tickles the sky, and freckles my jacket I remember the freckles that dotted my face And I realize They are still there Still on my nose, my ears And then I know I can still walk on clouds.

An excerpt from an essay by Davis Menard ’12, one of the winners of the English Writing Prize. The assignment: Along the edge of ancient maps it used to say “Here there be monsters.” What does it say at the edge of your map, and why does it say that? At the edge of the map I carry in my pocket along with a compass at all times, there is an inscription that says, “Here there are monsters.” My mapmaker, evidently, is quite the astute grammarian. When I was given this map, as a wee lad toiling away in the eighth grade, the writing both puzzled and terrified me. Firstly, I had been told countless times by my teachers and parents that monsters did not exist. Apparently they never had bedroom closets as children. Secondly, I trusted my mapmaker so wholly that I had to believe his inscription was true, a chilling realization indeed. Monsters were real. I looked at my map and saw all the well-defined regions, the continents I had learned about in school years past. Although I’d never been to most of these places, I felt comfort in knowing even the slightest thing about them. The edge, however, gave me no such comfort. I had no idea of what lay in the fringes of my map, save that they were inhabited by monsters. The timing of this revelation could not have been much worse. I was going off to boarding school just a few months after receiving my map, and did not know what to expect. Boarding school was on the edge of my map, and thus, I reasoned, must be filled with monsters…”

As docents, the students became responsible for guiding visitors through the exhibits and explaining not only each piece on display but the overall movement and history that supported the artist’s development and creativity. These opportunities became available as Art Department Chair Bill Hardy developed remarkable relationships with foundations through the assistance and generosity of past parents and Millbrook alumni, including Lisa de Kooning (The Willem de Kooning Foundation) and Peter Kunhardt ’01 (The Gordon Parks Foundation, A Division of the Meserve-Kunhardt Foundation). Bill made another important connection back in 2009 following a show he attended at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. The show featured the works of Greene & Greene, California-based architects, and artwork and

Art History Students Curate Greene & Greene Surely one of the most unique opportunities offered to high school students in this country, Millbrook’s art history course provides access to artwork, foundations, people, and resources beyond the reach of even most college students. In 2009 the art history course morphed from a more general exploration of art in various cultures and time periods to a very specific and focused discovery of the work of a particular artist, that artist’s life, and the larger movement of which he was a part. Thus, the works of Willem de Kooning and then the photography of Gordon

Parks became the singular yearlong focus for students in art history in the 2009-2010 and 2010-2011 school years respectively. Not only did students study the artists and their work, they had the incredible opportunity to work with the foundations that manage the artists’ legacies, and, as a final culminating project, to curate an exhibit

In May the students opened their exhibit in the Warner Gallery. Having selected for the exhibit several large images of the Gamble House, Stickley furniture, other furniture and jewelry made by local artisans, and ceramics from Byrdcliffe, the students drafted didactics to educate visitors. The group designed the show and the publicity, assuming the full curatorial process under the guidance of Bill Hardy and faculty member David Greenwood. Each student then served as a docent during the opening and subsequent days of the show, speaking to large groups of people and answering questions about the exhibit and what they had learned in the process.

furniture created in the style of the Arts & Crafts movement. Following dinner with Ted Bosley, director of the Gamble House, Bill knew knew the direction the art history course would take in 2011; the concept for the Greene and Greene art history course was born. From September, through May students explored the Arts & Crafts movement, how it began, who was responsible, and how it evolved. Students considered the aesthetic implications and questioned how craftsmen, then and now, truly maintain the integrity of their work. They began by studying the Gamble House itself and the furniture within, working with the archivist at the Huntington Library in Pasadena to choose images of both the interior and exterior of the house to include in the exhibit. They also traveled locally to historic places and artists’ workshops including Val-kill Estate (home of Eleanor Roosevelt) and Byrdcliffe (an artists’ guild in Woodstock) where they learned about

This year’s art history class will focus on photojournalism and the work of Ron Haviv. Student discussion will center on how photographers use images to convey messages, and the class will study the photo documentation of conflict, working directly with Ron Haviv himself.

Bill McNamara ’75
Seventh Chairman of the Board of Millbrook School A trustee for 21 years and chairman of the board for the past twelve, Bill McNamara has served Millbrook School with absolute dedication. For his distinguished service to Millbrook School, Bill was honored at a dinner in April of 2012, during which he was awarded a Millbrook Medal. Headmaster Drew Casertano and Assistant to the Headmaster for External Relations Bob Anthony ’65 shared the following praise:
“Bill has worked hard and smart for Millbrook. Indeed, he has been always available and immediately responsive. Through a war, an insurance crisis, an oil crisis, and a financial crisis... through our enrollment growth from 160 to 270 and the financing and construction of Mills, Holbrook, the Harris-Kenan Language Center and MASC and the renovations of Harris, Abbott and, now, the Barn, Bill has been — as finance chairman and then board chairman — a steady, wise, thoughtful, inspirational and ambitious hand on the tiller of our beloved ship of school.”
~ Headmaster Drew Casertano
“Bill has worked closely with Millbrook’s 6th headmaster, as he and Drew became an extraordinary team dedicated to fulfilling the school’s mission and propelling Millbrook to the forefront of the independent secondary school landscape. Bill’s exceptional leadership for the past 12 years inspired his fellow trustees and the school’s administrators and faculty as he exhibited the perfect combination of ambition, optimism, clarity, judgment, communication, and good humor as he moved the board to consensus and a call to action… In this fragile and interdependent world, we are frequently reminded to leave a place better than we found it. Bill McNamara has certainly done that at Millbrook. He has left an indelible mark for our current and future leaders to measure up to.”

Bill Menard ’78
Eighth Chairman of the Board of Millbrook School A dorm proctor, a prefect, president of the student council and editor in chief of the Silo, Bill Menard accomplished a great deal as a student at Millbrook School before graduating Summa Cum Laude in 1978 and heading off to Williams College. He has led a busy and productive life since. A political science major, Bill went to work for the democratic presidential campaigns in the 1980s and then switched gears to attend Georgetown University’s Law Center, graduating Magna Cum Laude in 1992. He has practiced law for more than 20 years, and along the way, following a family vacation in Italy, he has crafted a parallel career in the Italian imports business and tourism industry. With a passion for all things Italian, particularly Italian food, Bill and his wife, Suzy, now organize annual Umbrian food and wine tours for groups who rent their family villa in the central Italian region of Umbria. In 2004, the Menards opened Bella Italia, a specialty importer and retailer of Italian arts and gourmet food products, in Bethesda, Maryland. They also recently acquired two Italian food businesses – a Rome-based supplier of pork products and a midsized producer of ready-made pasta products. While Italy is alluring, Bill has remained grounded here in the U.S. He and Suzy have raised four children – Austin, the oldest, attended St. Albans School in Washington, D.C., and Lindsey, Teddy, and Davis are all Millbrook graduates. It has been important for Bill to be involved in organizations supporting children and education – thus, he took on the roles of president of Northwest Washington Little League and board member of the Edward E. Ford Foundation, which is dedicated to strengthening and supporting independent secondary schools. He is currently the vice chairman of their board. Bill has served on Millbrook’s board of trustees since 1993 under the leadership of both Lucy Cutting and Bill McNamara. He has chaired the School Life Committee, the Committee on Trustees, and the Development Steering Committee, in addition to chairing strategic planning task forces. A Millbrook graduate, a Millbrook parent, a board member, and now board chair – Bill Menard knows Millbrook School through and through and supports the school’s values and important mission to become the finest small boarding school in the country.
“I hope to live up to the high standards of leadership and service demonstrated by [Lucy Cutting and Bill McNamara] and look forward to working with Drew, the board, the administration, faculty and staff of the school, as well as the parents and other constituencies as Millbrook moves forward into its bright and exciting future.”

Facilities
A Field Fit for Champions Made possible by the generous donation of Robert and Dilek Koenigsberger P ’13, ’16, a beautiful new athletic facility, Champions Field, became a reality this spring for the girls varsity softball team. The field was dedicated during Spring Parents Weekend in April, just as the team prepared for the 2012 season in hopes of winning their second consecutive Class “C” Western New England Prep School championship. Playing on the new field surely made their 2012 championship win on May 20th that much sweeter. Head Coach Jenna Harvey thanked the Koenigsberger’s on behalf of the entire team and spoke about Mustang pride and Millbrook athletics:
Millbrook is the kind of school that any studentathlete would be proud to represent, and being a Mustang and competing for the pride of this school is an honor that the girls softball team does not take lightly. This year, with the construction of [the new softball field], this sense of pride has hit a new high. Throughout the fall I was asked almost every day, “Have you seen the field? Can we go play catch on it? Are you sure it will be ready in time?” Interestingly, even before the season began, this

field was viewed as a sort of sacred space. In fact, many of our players refused to step onto it until the afternoon of our first practice. This field created a home for this team, one that they couldn’t wait to make their own. [Champions Field] is a symbol of the school’s pride in the accomplishment of these young women, of its belief in the power of sport to teach them important lessons, and of its knowledge that female athletes deserve top-notch facilities, because after all, this is the only field we have that is just for the girls. Most of all, this field symbolizes Millbrook’s commitment to the betterment of each player who dons the Mustang uniform.

Facilities Brief: From Facelifts to Full Fabrications As we go to press for the 2011-2012 Annual Report, many improvement projects, which will better our students’ experiences, are underway across facilities on campus. Most of these will be complete or near complete as you receive this printed publication. We are happy to share the progress that we’ve made to date, and we will be sure to provide updates as projects are completed.
The Barn One of the oldest original buildings on campus, the Barn is undergoing a complete renovation, which began in March and will be complete just before the start of school in September. Always the center of student activity, the Barn will continue to be the hub of activity in the students’ daily life. It will continue to be home to the student center, the snack bar, and the school store, and it will house spacious new digs for the College Counseling Office. A TV room, recreation/game room, and meeting rooms upstairs and a new café downstairs will be beautiful and comfortable spaces for students to meet, gather with friends, or study. A new outdoor elevated patio will also provide a sunny place for students to get together during the fall and spring. Most importantly, the renovations included major updates to the heating/cooling system and use of sustainable
and environmentally friendly materials throughout, designed with the goal of achieving the gold level of LEED certification. This will be Millbrook’s 2nd gold LEED certified building on campus, the Math and Science Center being the first. More information and photos will be published on Millbrook’s website as the students and faculty celebrate in grand style the official opening of the Barn in September.
(for 12 girls), a lounge, two girls bathrooms, and a faculty apartment. Record inquiries and applications for the 2012-2013 school year prompted administrators to find additional living space for students, and no new building was required for this project. The Miller Brown Health Center will be temporarily relocated to a modular space for the next couple of years while a new and expanded health center is designed and built. The temporary health center space will have six beds, improved equipment, upgraded documentation, and updated medication administration systems.
The Reese Squash Courts
The Annex and Miller Brown Health Center
Another project that will be finished by the start of school is the conversion of the space that housed the Miller Brown Health Center into new dorm rooms for girls. The Annex sits on ground floor of Harris Hall, and, once construction is complete, will include six new dorm rooms
An ever increasingly popular sport at Millbrook, squash now accounts for 90+ players on five teams during the winter athletic season. Our athletic program struggled to accommodate all of the practices and matches on the four existing international courts, so a plan was put in motion to build an additional four courts. With construction commencing on the exterior wall on the south side of the Mills Athletic Center, the courts could be added with little or no disruption to activities and spaces in the rest of the building. Construction began in late May and is expected to be completed in October, well before the start of the 2012-2013 squash season.

The New Zoo Lot & Path: Sustainable, Practical & Perfectly Millbrook Millbrook’s most recently completed facilities project is a vision in green, another testament to the school’s commitment to building in a responsible and sustainable fashion. Generous donors made possible a new path to the Trevor Zoo, which takes visitors on a safe journey from the new green parking lot to the zoo’s entrance. Visitors, including school groups and families with young children, no longer have to walk on School Road to get to their destination. The new path is made of Flexi-Pave®, a material consisting of ground up recycled tires and gravel. It is more tree-friendly than asphalt and extremely porous, thus allowing rainwater to move directly into the soil. It also requires a thinner layer of gravel, thereby protecting the tree roots. Flexi-Pave® itself can also be reused to make more Flexi-Pave®. The path is accessed from a large new parking lot created with Drivable Grass®. The 2 x 2 foot concrete lattice-style sheets were placed on top of a carefully constructed bed of gravel, sand, and soil with high permeability, and they were seeded with a shortgrowing fescue. Our goal is to have a low mow or no mow area that will be a green, oxygen-producing carpet of grass. There are additional green features of the new lot that make it a vast improvement over a traditional hot asphalt parking lot. Pitched to the center, the lot acts as a giant biofilter allowing oil and gas impurities to be washed down through the soil, thus protecting the bordering stream from contaminants and excess runoff. The lot is also home to a substantial number of new trees and shrubs, which will produce additional oxygen and provide shade.

The Grace Badger Murphy ’12 Bridge The bridge that carries visitors from the new zoo parking lot across the stream to the new walkway has been named in memory of Grace Murphy, a courageous member of the class of 2012 who valiantly battled brain cancer for many years of her young life. During her brief time at Millbrook, Grace came to love the Trevor Zoo and the animals therein, she made deep connections with her classmates, and she inspired those who knew her. The plaque reads in part, “This bridge is dedicated to Grace who, in her short life, showed how important it is for us all to have bridges to the natural world.”

Millbrook’s Mission Millbrook School is a small, coeducational, college preparatory boarding school where close, nurturing, and stimulating relationships between students and their teachers have been the school’s hallmark since its founding. Our goal is to promote in each student the intellectual, emotional, spiritual, and physical growth, which will lead to a life both individually satisfying and valuable to the greater society. Every aspect of our curriculum is intended to develop • curiosity and a commitment to intellectual excellence, critical thinking, and the joy of learning; • respect for oneself and for others; • a moral framework based on personal integrity; • a commitment to serve as stewards of the natural world; • a readiness to use one’s knowledge and skills in service to others. To fulfill this mission, Millbrook School offers a rigorous, varied and comprehensive curriculum, which is individually oriented, includes all aspects of learning, and requires meaningful, active involvement in the daily life of the school. Equally important, we attract and maintain a faculty with a demonstrated commitment and the ability to teach in a variety of roles, as well as a capable, motivated, and diverse student body.
