Millbrook School
Development Report The 2014-2015 year proved to be another outstanding and record-setting year in fundraising for Millbrook School. It is with tremendous gratitude that we inform the greater Millbrook family that the Annual Fund exceeded $2 million for the first time in our 84-year history. In addition, annual and capital gifts totaled more than $9.4 million to top last year’s record of $8 million. Our sincere thanks begin with the Board of Trustees and extend to every constituency—alumni, parents and parents of alumni, grandparents, friends, and neighbors. Class agents, parent chairs, and parent volunteers were all responsible for the broad support received from alumni (39%) and current parents (93%). Their dogged determination is responsible for the overall success and positive momentum that has put Millbrook at the forefront of independent secondary schools in fundraising. This spring we were informed by the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) that Millbrook was recognized for overall performance in the development field along with three other schools: Groton, St. Paul’s, and Milton. We are delighted to be included in this group of schools, and it is our hope and intention to continue to improve each year in the future. This past year marked Drew and Linda Casertano’s 25th year at Millbrook. The leadership, vision, ambition, and continuity that they have provided have been essential to Millbrook’s substantial growth and development over this period. We look to the future with optimism and purpose and an abiding commitment to make our school stronger as we implement our mission on a daily basis. In a hugely successful Annual Fund, two specifics stand out. This year’s Headmaster’s Challenge was another resounding success in building increased participation and enthusiasm from our younger graduates, and the parents of our VI formers joined together to leave their stamp in the form of the Class of 2015 Stairway. These parents contributed a total of $350,000 to cover the cost of these sorely needed and attractive steps that now lead from the Holbrook Arts Center parking lot up to the Durand Quadrangle. We have much to be thankful for as we address the challenges and opportunities in the year ahead. Construction of the new dining hall is now well underway, and we continue to make steady progress toward our capital campaign target of $65 million. We are eager to keep you informed as we work together for the future growth and health of our school community.

ANNUAL REPORT 2014-2015 3
Dear Members of the Millbrook Family, The 2014-2015 school year was another year marked by impressive progress and improvement in so many areas throughout our school. My board colleagues and our administrative team do not take these annual reports of our successes for granted but recognize that this is the result of the extraordinary planning, hard work, commitment, and support of members of the entire Millbrook family. On behalf of the board, I take this opportunity to celebrate our many achievements together and to recognize and thank you for the support crucial to making 2014-15 so successful. This year we celebrated Drew Casertano’s 25th year as head of school, a remarkable tenure that has been marked by so many achievements and noteworthy advances. Millbrook School has truly been the beneficiary of this remarkable leader’s dedication and commitment, and we look forward to his continued leadership for many years to come. Nowhere has the sense of shared vision and purpose, so well articulated and embodied in Drew Casertano’s leadership, seen greater success than in our current capital campaign. With its $65 million goal, the first major formal capital campaign in our school’s history has been built around a shared vision and set of strategic priorities that include $35 million for campus improvements and $25 million for endowment. Those shared ambitions have enabled us to make strides we could not have even imagined a few years ago. And this year our Annual Fund—perhaps the best barometer of support for the school—smashed all previous records, raising more than $2.1 million and continuing the trend of ever increasing participation. Those fundraising successes have enabled us to break ground on a new dining hall, a building that will be able to house the entire school community, provide healthy and delicious meals, and be an inviting place where the important daily social interactions between students, faculty, and staff can take place. Our strengthened financial position has also allowed us to undertake an important initiative, our Covenant with the Faculty. This comprehensive program better enables us to attract, retain, and support our most precious resource, and the benefits of a strengthened faculty have already begun to show themselves, with outstanding student achievements in the classrooms, on the athletic fields, and in service to the school community. Finally, I would like to address special thanks to Bob Anthony ’65 who not only completed his 41st year of service to Millbrook School, but who also celebrated his 50th Millbrook reunion this summer. Known to each of you for his warmth, wit, and wisdom, Bob was both honored by and bestowed honor upon the Class of 2015 by delivering its Commencement Address last spring, inspiring our graduating seniors with his love of this school and his advice to strive, to shake life by the lapels, to travel, and to build cathedrals. What better way to reflect upon the Millbrook School journey of 2014-15 than through Bob’s words and his lifetime example. For the Millbrook School experience is a journey taken together by adolescents and their adult mentors and succeeds best when both are fully committed to that journey and to each other. Teachers inspiring students. Students amazing teachers. Parents providing the essential glue through their love and support. Together last year, we accomplished so much, and together we will continue to achieve great things. With every good wish,
William L. Menard ’78 Chairman of the Board of Trustees

2015 Alumni Weekend Alumni visiting for the annual Alumni Weekend celebrations had a taste of time-honored traditions while relishing the opportunity to explore a wellpolished and expanded campus, enjoy time with old friends, and renew discussions with favorite teachers.
The weekend was packed with activities from which to choose—from a golf outing to zoo feeds, art gallery visits to ceramics classes, soccer games to book talks, and so much more. There was every opportunity to visit favorite “old places on campus while touring some of the new and renovated spaces including the beautiful West Dorm and the solar field now powering the entirety of the campus. There were also several special gatherings beginning with dinners honoring the 25th and 50th reunion classes. The traditional Alumni Parade and gathering in the chapel brought classmates together, while two movie showings and a demonstration of the iGlobe in the Climate Change Exhibit encouraged generations of Millbrook alumni to gather.

2015 Alumni Weekend This Alumni Weekend also marked Drew Casertano’s 25th year as Millbrook’s headmaster, and to celebrate alumni gathered in the Chelsea Morrison Theater to view a special film directed by Dan Cohen ’86. While the film looks back on the incredible progress made at Millbrook during Drew’s tenure, it also celebrates the many future aspirations for the school. Film segments will soon be available on our website.
THE MILLBROOK MEDAL Dr. Daniel Lindley ’51 was honored with a Millbrook Medal for his distinguished service to Millbrook School. From the special citation presented by Bob Anthony ’65 to Dan: In 1987 he opened a private practice in psychotherapy and psychoanalysis in Evanston, IL. Dan has also authored numerous articles on teaching, rhetoric, photography, and Jungian approaches to fairy tales. He has written several books including This Rough Magic: The Life of Teaching and On Life’s Journey: Always Becoming. Dan has freely shared his expertise on teaching with our faculty, in workshops on campus, observing young teachers in our classrooms, and as a teacher trainer to our faculty. His After his student days here, Dan went on to Yale University, where he received a B.A. in English, and then to Harvard, where he earned his Master’s in Education. He also picked up a PhD from Florida State University and a
Three Millbrook alumni were also recognized in a special presentation in the chapel. Bob Anthony ’65 had the true pleasure of presenting his classmate and friend, Dr. Michael Thompson ’65, with an Alumni Achievement Award for his long and distinguished service in the field of education. Cummings Zuill ’58 also came to the podium to receive a special award—the Edward C. Pulling Community Service Award—in recognition of a life of good works, and Daniel Lindley ’51 was recognized as an outstanding mentor and supporter of the faculty and entire school community as he was presented with a Millbrook Medal. All three alumni were lauded for their roles in making Millbrook and the world around them a better place.

S p e c i al A w ards Edward Pulling Community Service Award Cummings Zuill ’58 was honored for extending the principles and the spirit of community service in his life beyond Millbrook. From the special citation presented to Cummings: After graduating from Trinity College, Cummings returned to his home in Bermuda where he began his distinguished career with the Bank of Bermuda. In his spare time he devoted himselft to non-profit work and community projects, choosing to become involved in The Atlantic Philanthropies and using his time and skills to try to improve race relations in Bermuda. Cummings grew up in a segregated Bermuda. and he has been quietly working on healing racial divisions for more than two decades. Twenty years ago he attended the first diversity workshop at Bermuda College and then became a co-facilitator for the bank’s diversity training programs. He went on to help found the Diversity Institute at the college. Cummings also founded and guided the Centre on Philanthropy in order to promote and tap into the island’s innate spirit of generosity and to create an organized structure for philanthropy to help assist citizens and charities. Cummings became a trustee and director of the US-based Atlantic Philanthropies, and in 2008 he was honored with a $2 million education endowment named for him for people in the non-profit sector in Bermuda. The Cummings V. Zuill Scholarship was established in recognition of Cummings’ pioneering contribution to philanthropy and the development of the not for profit organizations in Bermuda. The program’s goal is to nurture, sustain, and grow this vital area by supporting educational and training opportunities and to increase the skill level of individuals in this sector. That very same year Cummings was made a member of the Order of the British Empire.
Alumni Achievement Award Dr. Michael Thompson ’65 was honored for his long and distinguished career and service in the field of education. From the special citation presented to Michael: Following his graduation from Millbrook, Michael went on to Harvard University and subsequently earned his Master’s in Education there before moving on to the University of Chicago where he received his Ph.D. Michael opened a private practice in psychotherapy, and when that proved to be somewhat isolating and draining, Michael began consulting with schools. That move led to his running workshops for teachers. Then the National Association of Independent Schools tapped him to be the facilitator for the Institute for New Heads, the workshop for first-time heads of independent schools. He was responsible for training over 500 heads of schools, and with his rolodex full of great contacts, he became a school consultant. Michael has visited more than 700 independent schools around the world and has worked with faculties, administrators, and parent groups on his journeys. Leading workshops led to his writing articles and ultimately books about child development. In 1999 Michael coauthored a book about the psychology of boys, Raising Cain: Protecting the Emotional Life of Boys. It was published six days before the shootings at Columbine High School, and, as a result of that tragedy, Michael was enlisted as a public commentator on the inner lives of boys. He went on to write eight more books about children. Michael has appeared on the Oprah Winfrey Show, the Today Show, and ABC’s 20/20, and he has accomplished all of the above while also holding down a day job as supervising psychologist for the Belmont Hill School. We are proud that Michael is a Millbrook alumnus and happy to share all that he has accomplished in his work with children and in his care and feeding of heads of school and teachers for more than 35 years.

Commencement 2015 On a picture-perfect Sunday afternoon the Class of 2015 gathered with family, friends, and faculty to celebrate growth, success, community, and tradition—from Prize Night to Last Night to the commencement walk and the cry line. Commencement festivities began on Saturday evening with the traditional Senior Dinner for the VI formers, their parents, and advisors on Pulling Quad. From there, the community gathered under the main tent on the Flagler Quad for Prize Night, during which seniors were recognized for outstanding achievement in all areas of school life. Following a blessing by Chaplin Cam Hardy, Christina Lang-Assael, Millbrook board member and parent of Robert Lang-Assael ’15, welcomed the graduates, underform students, faculty, and families. On the eve of his own Millbrook 50th reunion, Robert Anthony ’65 gave a Commencement Address that was rich in advice, humor, and insight. In his address he advised the graduates to enjoy the journey of life, a journey that is much more enjoyable and fulfilling than the end results. The VIth formers elected classmate Nicholas Ogilvie-Thompson to deliver this year’s VIth Form Commencement Address. He reflected on his time at Millbrook and urged his classmates to find their passions and actively live life. Nicholas stressed, “there’s a reason your windshield is so big and your rearview mirror is so small—you need to focus on the road ahead.” Headmaster Drew Casertano presented three special awards during commencement: the Sportsmanship Cup was awarded to Catherine MacKenzie, the Community Service Cup was presented to Sylvia Tan, and Arthur Xiao earned Summa Cum Laude for Millbrook’s Class of 2015. Immediately following the commencement ceremony, students and faculty exchanged words, hugs, and handshakes, and there was nary a dry eye in the line as graduates began to officially turn the page on their Millbrook careers and begin the next chapter of their lives.

Arthur Xiao College attending: Amherst College Major or area of interest: philosophy, physics, mathematics Senior prizes: Summa Cum Laude, Mathematics Prize Arthur heads off to college with the intention of discovering and developing his true passions through his enormous intellectual curiosity. Appreciating the open curriculum and diverse, yet inclusive, student body at Amherst, he is looking forward to exploring a broad range of intellectual endeavors as he works toward a planned double major. Similar to his classroom experience at Millbrook, he will be immersing himself in classes that allow him to collaborate with his peers and continue to develop meaningful and lasting relationships. Influenced by his Millbrook teachers and advisors, Arthur is approaching college, and life, with a professionalism and sense of perspective that is well beyond his years.

Starsi Howell College attending: New York University Major or area of interest: film and global studies Senior prize: Cum Laude Starsi is fully immersed in a gap year adventure which includes: interning with a film company in LA, scuba diving to research marine life in Belize, volunteering in Thailand, Cambodia, and Laos, and immersing herself in French language and culture in Paris. She’ll begin her college career in 2016 at NYU’s Gallatin School. Starsi came to Millbrook passionate, engaged and generous, but she credits her time at Millbrook and one of her favorite teachers, Mr. Mark Clizbe, for teaching her to develop her own opinions and to present them to others, while maintaining her respect for opposing opinions and different cultures. Starsi hopes to have more professors at NYU who are like Mr. Clizbe, who encourage her to dig deeper and find her true voice. Already a consistent and accessible leader, the outlook is nothing but positive for her time in college and the path beyond.

Senior Profiles
Edward Opoku College attending: University of Virginia Major or area of interest: business Senior prize: 4-year varsity letter winner Making favorable life-changing decisions is something that Edward has gotten pretty good at. The same level-headed thinking and eagerness to better himself that brought him to Millbrook now takes him to the University of Virginia. It is no secret that Edward is an exceptional athlete, but he is not going to college just to play soccer. Although he hopes to play at a professional level, he knows that a solid education is what will carry him through life and back to Ghana to help make a difference for others in his home country. With that in mind, Edward is hitting the books just as hard as he is playing on the field, pursuing a degree in business. Edward says Millbrook taught him to take risks yet be responsible, and to not be scared to try new things. Given Edward’s journey so far, those qualities may have already been ingrained. He has shown that he has the drive and determination to be a star on the field, in the classroom, and in life. Edward’s story up to now is nothing short of incredible, and we will continue to follow his many future successes.
Emma Garschagen College attending: Kenyon College Major or area of interest: writing, fine arts, and anthropology Senior prizes: Cum Laude, Art History Award, English Writing Prize Emma says that she enjoyed her time at Millbrook in part because her teachers were “contagiously passionate” about teaching. Well, she must have caught that bug. An intellectual standout, Emma approached her studies with an insatiable curiosity. Her eagerness to explore her true interests led her to Kenyon College, which bears similarities to Millbrook with small class sizes and diverse course offerings. As Emma pursues her varied interests in her studies, she hopes to foster close relationships with her professors and become a positive, contributing member of the student body, all while maintaining a good balance between her personal responsibility and a responsibility to the greater community. If her time at Millbrook is any indicator, Emma will have no problem proving herself to be a standout, both in and outside of the classroom.

Mimi Li
Archer loved Millbrook so much that he wanted to find a college that was perfectly similar—with small classes and a tight-knit community in a rural setting. “Just… less winter.” Hopefully it is nothing but warm weather, close friends and engaging classes for him at Washington & Lee University. Although he grew fond of the sciences in Mr. Waters’ physics and astronomy classes, he is set to study writing and history. At Millbrook Archer was able to find the right balance of work and play. He excelled in the classroom yet always had time for his friends, socializing, or exploring the far reaches of the campus. He mastered the skill of prioritizing his time, making sure not to miss a homework assignment or a game of football on the quad. Archer will surely take full advantage of what college and life has in store for him, and have a great time doing it.
College attending: Brown University
Millbrook School
Major or area of interest: Modern Culture and Media Senior Prizes: Cum Laude, Music Award While at Millbrook, Mimi had a curiosity that led her to explore her talents beyond the classroom and express herself through her arts and music. The open curriculum at Brown University will allow her to continue her personal exploration while deciding if a degree in Modern Culture and Media is right for her. She departed Millbrook with a broadened world perspective and an open mind, thanks in part to AP English, which she claims is “beyond an English class.” Pulling together language, philosophy, religion and anthropology, Mr. Zeiser helped open Mimi’s mind to new and fresh ideas. Mimi will miss the one-on-one interactions with her favorite teachers, Mr. Siktberg and Mr. Hardy, but is eager to meet and continue to learn from the global community at Brown. Her talent and artistry mixed with humility is sure to impress her future teachers, friends, and colleagues.
Commencement 2015
Senior Profiles
Micah Adams College attending: University of Washington Major or area of interest: biology Senior prize: Cum Laude Micah, a self-proclaimed “animal nerd,” applied to Millbrook enticed by the idea of attending the only high school in the country with a zoo. He took advantage of every opportunity to learn about animals academically and assist in overseeing their care and well-being as a zoo curator. It is this love for animals, and his pursuit to study and better understand them, that takes him across the country to the University of Washington. Building upon the foundation he established at Millbrook, it is fitting that he embarks at a college with one of the top-ranked biology programs in the world. Micah takes with him the mindset that he will accomplish the tasks laid out before him, even if that means seeking help from others. Studying animal behavior should be a piece of cake for him, as he feels incredibly well prepared by the “high level intellectual debates of Mr. Zeiser’s [AP English] class.”
Mary McCartney College Attending: Boston College Major or area of interest: theater, middle-eastern studies, and Arabic Senior Prizes: Cum Laude, Theater Award Hoping to one day light up the stage or screen, Mary will major in Theater Arts and continue her exploration of Islamic Cultures and Arabic at Boston College. The school’s holistic approach, broad liberal arts curriculum, and big city setting will help Mary round out her skills as an actor, broadening her already diverse perspective on the world, people, and cultures. She’s not expecting an easy path, but Mary has always had a love for learning and is not afraid to make mistakes. She has been known to keep her cool even when Ms. Lifter was pulling her outside of her comfort zone. She carries herself with poise and grace and has a keen ability to not sweat the little things. If you are looking for Mary in the near future you will likely find her close to the stage, but if she isn’t there, check the stands at the BC hockey game.

ANNUAL REPORT 2014-2015 23
Playwrights, scientists, humanitarians, photographers, historians, musicians, and more took their place on the CES stage in May to share their insights, struggles, lessons, passions, fears, and joys. The following summaries represent the honors-winning independent research and subsequent presentations on the grand ideas that germinated and blossomed as a result of their experiences at Millbrook.
Catherine Luchars
You Must Be This Age to Die Catherine conducted meaningful and thorough research on the topic of death and dying and choice. Pursuing questions related to the human existence, justice, and freedom, Catherine learned that a girl about her age from the same state in which she lives was confined and forcibly subjected to chemotherapy over her own objections and those of her mother. She argued that such actions violated not only the constitution but also fundamental conceptions of human autonomy and dignity. Outside reader and Cornell professor Philip Lorenz applauded her paper and how she connected the pathos of a single human life to the biggest questions about government and human existence. Catherine’s CES was also her Blaine Essay, which took top prize this year among the six finalists.

Millbrook School
Alan Feng
Water and Millbrook Alan tested and analyzed water quality on campus in an independent research project that made him explore more of his home away from home. Alan travelled regularly to eight different sites on campus—including the zoo pond, two streams, and the marsh—where he measured water quality and compared different parameters. As a IIIrd former travelling so far from his home in Shanghai, China, Alan found the naturalness of Millbrook’s 800 acres in stark contrast to the city surround from where he came. Marsh mucking was an incredibly foreign idea—“What on earth are we doing??” was his initial reaction. Four years later, his CES project took him outside, even in the middle of the winter, on a campus that had become such a familiar place to him, his second home. Two of his most prominent findings: sites closer to the road had higher salinity and nitrates were higher near the zoo.
Charlotte Kasmin
The Perception of Beauty Charlotte created paper lithographs to demonstrate and contrast two different ways society has viewed beauty. In an effort to debunk the “beauty myth,” Charlotte’s paper lithography technique represented the bodies of modern Barbies as compared to statuary bodies in ancient Italy. Beginning with her own digital photographs, she superimposed the images and used a laser printer and Xerox machine to degrade the quality and detail. Her goal: to push back against beauty “standards,” which are never constant but always in flux.
Danielle Tartaro
How Difficult Can This Be? Danielle’s research focused on dyslexia and the struggles that face dyslexic students. Danielle was inspired by research done by a student in the graduating class before hers and asked Millbrook students to perform everyday tasks with a twist—they were designed as if they were being completed by someone with dyslexia. A task that was supposed to be easy, suddenly became very difficult. Reading was no longer an unconscious act for her subjects—it became a conscious and time consuming decoding task. In pre and post activity surveys, Millbrook students admitted they had no idea what it felt like to have a learning difference. She helped open their eyes and validate the experiences of students who do have learning differences. Extending her research, Danielle visited nearby Kildonan School, where learning differences are the norm and students learn strategies to compensate and achieve success.

Hannah Hill and Anna Waldschmidt
Monkey See, Monkey Do Hannah and Anna focused on animal behavioral training, holding multiple training sessions with six different animals at the Trevor Zoo. They learned much about what goes into animal training and how easy it is for a training session to become ineffective. They used noise queues as a specific training tool to point and guide the animals. Ultimately, their research proved that the primates and animals that had some training in their past were the quickest to learn behavior, while the reptile did not respond at all.
Jack Dolan
Fly Rod Fun Jack loves to fly fish, and he spent much time enjoying the outdoor splendor that is Millbrook’s campus. His CES focused on building a split cane fly rod from scratch—a fishing rod that he will use for many years to come.
Gray Palmer
Is That Hedwig? Gray developed her idea of a collaborative audio tour in English, French and Spanish so that Trevor Zoo visitors might learn more about the animals. As an AP French student and a very active zoo curator, Gray’s passions met perfectly in this project. Having spent many months gathering information and animal descriptions, she prepared a tour that included the temperament of the animals in a more informal (less scientific) language she hoped would attract younger zoo visitors. She provided the text to Ms. Gatski’s AP Spanish class for their translation and then recruited Spanish students, French Canadians, and English Department faculty to read each part of their tour. Gray managed well the beginning of what we hope to be a truly viable educational tour for future zoo visitors.

Jack set up a workshop in the math and science center where he worked on this ambitious project over many months. He wanted to begin the process from scratch, ordering bamboo stalks and building the rod using techniques that craftsmen have used for a very long time, well before fiberglass rods became popular. He researched his information from books and the internet and managed to wade through many obstacles including how to properly use borrowed tools. In keeping with the whole project, he began to fabricate parts out of found materials (like the handle made out of wood he picked up from his parents property, shaped and sanded, and a spoon he cut up and used to make the reel seat). His was a CES of passion and purpose and it demonstrated a love of the process and the final product.
CES Program
Mary McCartney
Philadelphia State of Mind Mary, who is used to performing and following someone else’s artistic direction on stage, turned the tables and took to directing for her CES presentation. Mary found faculty who were interested in performing (Jon Downs, Billy Thom, and Elaine Lifter) and got to work. Her biggest challenge was learning how to take on her role as a teacher/director rather than a student/actor. So used to the faculty-student classroom dynamic, she felt she had to develop a new mindset to give direction, which she did beautifully as her faculty group performed the humorous Philadelphia State of Mind on the stage of the Chelsea Morrison Theater.
Mary Ma
Sensations of Sleep Mary’s large canvases were artfully displayed on the stage of the Chelsea Morrison Theater as she spoke to the audience about how she translated the human dream state into a waking experience through art. Rather than traditional canvas, Mary used bed sheets and pillowcases as her starting point, as if when waking up one might leave dreams on the surface of the materials. The images she created represent what you might remember in a dream state, abstract, in the same way dreams are not realistic.
Lucy Marquez Todeschini
SOS Venezuela Lucy was literally climbing the walls to complete her CES, which was presented on the back wall of Prum Hall. Her culminating project was a combination of stunning photography projected on the wall of the building and oversized prints plastered above windows and in other strategic sites on the wall. Brightly lit by large focused lamps, Lucy spoke to the audience about the cultural transition from her home country, Venezuela, to the United States.

Nick Ogilvie-Thompson
Gross Garb Nick made cool clothes by putting bodies on jackets and jeans. His question: why we hide our bodies in the first place? An advanced photo student, alternative processes really peaked his interest. Using photographs printed onto cloth, he aimed for a punk rock aesthetic in his unique jean jackets and pants. First converting cloth into a printable surface, he ran it through a printer to create graphic black and white images of eyes and other body parts and then had students model his wearable art.
Meg Lahey Morgan Moffat
Life-sized Portraiture: Life in Blue Morgan created a life-sized cyanotype photomontage showing boxing in action. Boom! Extremely detail oriented, Morgan made 40 cyanotypes depicting parts of entire bodies, then put them together to make a life-sized representation of a student learning how to box. Her project was an artistic and mathematical feat that, when complete, looked more like an animated collage. Quite appropriate since her CES was all about motion in the art of boxing.

Millbrook’s Run For Hope Meg spent months planning a hugely successful Run For Hope to raise money for esophageal cancer. From laying out the course, to designing flyers and ads, to recruiting runners, and preparing all logistics for race day, Meg blended two of the most important aspects of her Millbrook career: art and athletics. On race day over 60 runners helped raise more than $3,500. A big win for Meg and for cancer research.
Zac Schymura
Illuminated Transition Within what might seem to be an ordinary box, Zac created a scenic silhouette of transition and personal importance. Growing up in New York City, Zac initially found the transition to Millbrook’s 800-acre campus rather strange. When he began thinking about college, transition once again became top of mind as he worked out this question for himself: “Where do I belong?” His CES project, which incorporated photographic images, silhouetted and printed on acetate, within a homemade projector box—represents the middle space between Millbrook and home, a country scape fading into a city. He crafted the box in the woodshop, dropped in the silhouetted images at one end, and used the flashlight from his iPhone through a hole in the other end to project his images during his evening presentation. Thoroughly illuminating!
Starsi Howell
Screenwriting With a love for the theater and movie making, Starsi knew her project would tie into these interests. She ultimately crafted her own screenplay from a non-fiction book she had read at Millbrook, Stand Before Your God. Taking it a step further, she recruited and rehearsed faculty and students to perform a read-through of her screenplay on the stage in the Chelsea Morrison Theater. Bravo, Starsi!
Sylvia Tan
Stress and Ethnicity Having interviewed a huge variety of students in hours of interviews conducted over many days, weeks, and months, Sylvia analyzed her research and ultimately drew conclusions on the effect of regional affiliation, gender, and high school grade level on salivary cortisol. Having set up stressful situations for many student volunteers (using a scientific method proven by others to induce stress in a safe way), Sylvia gathered saliva samples from each participant before and after and then, with the assistance of Dr. Alan Tousignant, ran bio assays at Vassar College to generate results for analysis. She ultimately concluded that there is an inverse relationship between cortisol (stress hormone) and oxytocin (feel good hormone). Having also gathered qualitative data—how did the test takers feel and how much stress did they perceive—she went on to conclude that American students have a statistically higher perceived stress level compared to Asian students when no statistical differences existed in their actual hormone levels. An unintended and perhaps greater lesson for Sylvia: how to manage people and schedules when on a strict deadline.

Class of 2015 Stairway Parents of the class of 2015 raised more than $350,000 in 2014-2015 to build a much needed stairway that now connects the parking lot between the Frederic C. Hamilton Math and Science Center and Holbrook Arts Center to the Durand Quad between Abbott and Harris halls. Like students’ years at Millbrook, the staircase symbolizes a stepping stone from one place to the next. Thank you to the parents of the class of 2015!

100% Solar Powered As of March 2015, Millbrook’s campus became 100% solar powered. Our 7-acre solar field is currently the largest producing solar field in Central Hudson’s service area! The field—it’s environmental impact and the science behind its power—is being woven into the curriculum across science courses, independent studies, and CES (Culminating Experience for Seniors) projects. It’s one of the tools that moves Millbrook ever closer to being carbon neutral by 2020.
Dining Hall Progress We broke ground on the new dining hall in June, and construction is well underway. Walls are taking shape, and the outline of the main hall—which will seat 400—is already complete with two-story fireplace. The dining hall will be ready for the start of the 2016-2017 school year. Faculty Milestones: William Hardy 25 YEARS Robert Wood Johnson, Jr. Chair in the Arts, Awarded 1996 Kenan Chair for Excellence in Teaching, Awarded 2005
From an introduction by Headmaster Drew Casertano at the 2015 Faculty Honors Dinner: The arts have long been important at Millbrook. Woldemar Neufeld, Nat Abbott, Rene Clark, and Lenny Beecher all contributed substantially to that legacy. Today the arts are integral to Millbrook, a major element of what makes Millbrook, Millbrook. Bill Hardy is the reason why—he is an exceptional teacher, who has inspired students wherever he teaches them. Along with inspiring students, Bill has, in his words, made the arts a “full partner” in the program at Millbrook. I would go further and say that he has made them a signature experience. Bill has remarkable insights about and skills with students; he is a generous and collaborative colleague, and he believes deeply in the power of community to inspire and to educate. All of that makes Bill a schoolman...a great schoolman.
Barbara Gatski 15 YEARS • Barbara has worn many hats at Millbrook since she arrived in 2000: World Language Department chair, Spanish teacher, Outreach faculty advisor, international student advisor, and parent programs director in the Development Office. • Under Barbara’s leadership Millbrook’s foreign language curriculum has become a model in language immersion programs for other independent schools that now come to Millbrook to study our curriculum and lesson delivery. • Barbara is also a leader in the College Board’s AP language assessment exam, having participated as a reader for the AP test since 1991 and a table leader since 1996. For the past 10 years, Barbara has been selected as a specialist to set standards for the reading of the Spanish AP exams. • In her role as director of Millbrook’s Parent Programs, Barbara has spearheaded important parent education programs while raising parent participation in the Annual Fund to an all time high of 93%.

Jonathan Downs ’98 5 YEARS • Graduated in the class of 1998 and went on to earn his BA and MA from Middlebury College and his MEd from Harvard. • Jon was thrilled to return to Millbrook in 2010 as the Director of Admission. He feels strongly that his experience as a student at Millbrook has influenced the broader scope of his life since, “My Millbrook education is the reason I was inspired to pursue a career in education.” • Admissions figures have continued to rise steadily since Jon arrived resulting in the highest number of interviews and applications in Millbrook’s history this past year—702 and 621 respectively. Selectivity is also up—while he and his team admitted fewer students than in years past, enrollments were full earlier than ever before.
Erin Downs 5 YEARS • Erin joined the Millbrook faculty in 2010 to teach English and assist in the Communications Department; she stepped into her role as the English Department Chair in the fall of 2014. Having a voice to influence curricular changes adds a complexity to her job that she appreciates— she is happy to continually review and support the reasons we are teaching the things we teach and what we are accomplishing in the big picture as an institution. • Erin leads a department in which seven out of eight teachers have (or will shortly have) one or more advanced degrees. Erin earned her master’s degree in English from Breadloaf at Middlebury College. • Erin and the members of her department teach with these top priorities in mind: to inspire a love of literature and to instill in our students the ability to be critical thinkers and readers and articulate writers and speakers.

Trustees
B oard of T ru st e e s N e w s We extend our most sincere appreciation to Bill Crossman ’74 who, after 29 years of service as a Millbrook trustee, has retired. Over the years Bill served on the Physical Resources Committee, the Audit Committee, and the Development Committee, chairing two of those three. He also chaired the Parent Leadership Annual Network while his son, Brooks, was a student at Millbrook, assisting in admissions and development initiatives. We are happy to say that Bill will continue as an honorary trustee.
Charlotte Carroll Tracy ’88
Theodore Karatz ’96
elected May 2015
elected May 2015 Charlotte holds a BA from Lynchburg College and an MA in Education from Mills College. After working in New York in account management at Y&R and Grey Advertising, she moved to San Francisco and began her career in education. She taught at San Francisco Day School and Burke’s School, and in 2007 Charlotte transitioned to teacher education at the Bay Area Teacher Training Institute while also becoming the director of the Associate Teacher Program at the Nueva School.
She has been an active volunteer in her community and has served on several boards and fundraising committees for various non-profits including the Development Committee at Marin Country Day School, The Parks Conservancy, Youth Speaks, and Children of Shelters. She regularly tutors under-privileged students through the organization Reading Partners. Additionally, she and her two sisters co-operate a family foundation. Most recently, after tapping into her love of design while remodeling a house on the Connecticut shore, she partnered with a fellow Millbrook alumnus, John Allee ’86, and opened meta44, a design store in Millerton, NY. Charlotte lives in her native city of San Francisco with her husband, Scott Tracy, and their three children, Charlie (12), Teddy (10) and Cate (10).

Teddy has been part of the Millbrook School family for more than 20 years since attending the school beginning as a III form student in 1992. After graduation, he went on to receive a BA at the University of Southern California and a Masters in Real Estate Development, also from the University of Southern California. Teddy currently lives in Los Angeles with his wife, Heather, and serves a director at GTIS Partners, a global real estate private equity firm, where he is responsible for the firm’s west coast office. His focus is on both urban and suburban real estate investments throughout California and the western states, covering both site analysis and acquisition while also structuring and negotiating joint ventures with operating partners. Mr. Karatz has already begun his committee work at Millbrook and serves on the Student Life Committee. On joining Millbrook’s Board of Trustees, Teddy shared, “I feel extraordinarily proud and fortunate to be an integral part of Millbrook’s future. Millbrook has given me so much more than I have given back, so I hope to change that and assist in ways that help the school both preserve its strong culture and enhance the experience offered to all of its students. I’m thrilled and ready to serve!”

A nn ual F u nd L e ad e rsh i p The successful growth of our Annual Fund could not happen without dedicated alumni and parent volunteers who have worked with us to raise the bar in annual giving and set a positive example for other members of the Millbrook family. Here we introduce some of those alumni and parent leaders, and we will continue to share more about our class agents and current parents who give of themselves to make Millbrook better by design.
Katrina Cox ’04 New Alumni Chair of the Annual Fund Katrina’s combination of long stewardship and history with Millbrook makes her a perfect fit for her new role as alumni chair of the Annual Fund. Serving as a class agent for over ten years, Katrina most enjoyed working with the alumni relations team and having the opportunity to connect with fellow alumni around the importance of supporting their alma mater. “The school has always been a part of my life,” says Katrina. Katrina has a lot of “blue blood” in her family as her father, Tom Cox, graduated from Millbrook in 1962 and served on the board, and her brother, Alexander Cox, graduated in 2007. After graduating from Millbrook, Katrina completed her bachelors of business administration from The George Washington University. She then began work in the healthcare public relations space and is currently an account supervisor at Chamberlain Healthcare PR. “Millbrook continues to be a very special place owing in great part to the generosity of both alumni and parents,” says Katrina who also says that the school impacted her in “truly life-changing ways.” It is clear that her history with, and passion for Millbrook will certainly propel her success in her new role.

Class agent profiles
Alexander “Sandy” Podmaniczky ’72 Class Agent Alexander, or, as he likes to be called, “Sandy,” started serving Millbrook as an alumni association representative in the 1970’s. He became the head of that association in the 1980’s, which is when he says Bob Anthony recruited him to become a class agent. His involvement with his alma mater post graduation continued to grow as he joined Millbrook’s faculty as the director of admission from 1987-1994. Sandy says that he first realized the competitive advantage of a Millbrook education during his freshman year at Kenyon, where he felt more prepared both academically and socially in comparison to his peers. Today he is an assistant director at Enterprise Solutions Group, and the intrinsic values of stewardship and service developed during his time at Millbrook are a major force in his life. “I can’t walk by a lighted unoccupied room without turning off the lights or stopping a faucet from dripping,” he says. Knowing the lasting impact that Millbrook has had on Sandy, it is no surprise that daughter Sarah enrolled and graduated in 2004. “I had the great pleasure of watching my daughter thrive as a Millbrook student,” he says. He also frequents the Trevor Zoo when his grandchildren are in town. Sandy is a dedicated class agent and says, “I know that the Annual Fund is critical to Millbrook. I hope Millbrook continues to build on the best of its past to help young people to grow into productive adults ready to address the substantive issues of their future.”
Megan Crossman ’87 Class Agent Megan Crossman has been a class agent for twenty years and says that her long involvement in the Annual Fund is her way to thank Millbrook for her financial aid award and to show the rest of the community that participation counts. “Participation counts” is an ideology that has impacted her life in unexpected ways. She credits Millbrook with helping to instill a passion for volunteering. After marrying Patrick Crossman, cousin of Bill Crossman ’74 and Scott Crossman ’81, she stayed home with her three children for 12 years. During this time she volunteered often, from school to scouts. When she felt it was time to restart her career, she was told that one of the central factors in her being hired by her current employer, QStar LLC, was her volunteer history. Today, she has successfully climbed the ladder from administrative assistant to map producer, now creating maps for geologists. Megan says that she came to Millbrook as a shy girl and left as a confident young lady. She believes that a successful and growing Annual Fund will support not only the expansion and maintenance of Millbrook’s campus but also so many opportunities for students who might not otherwise be able to afford the cost of tuition.

Kate (Schoonmaker) Jenkins ’96 class Agent
“I carry a strong sense of community from my Millbrook experience. I was never just a number and always felt a part of something. From that, I have a sense of wanting to give back,” says Kate Jenkins, who has served as a class agent since 1996. Kate is passionate about supporting the Annual Fund because of the Millbrook faculty and the experience they helped shape. “When I attended Millbrook, every single faculty member had the same energy and interest in my success. It was a consistent experience in an environment that gave me a sense of competitiveness, a strong work ethic, and a high value on community service. Millbrook was a multi-dimensional education that pushed me in every way." She believes that it is important to continue to invest in faculty so that students today can have the same positive experience that she had. Today, as an executive director in the Asset Management Experienced Recruiting team at JP Morgan Chase, Kate says that the same values she speaks to at Millbrook as a class agent mirror what she is looking for in the job candidates with whom she works. “Having the Millbrook connection makes conversations about my field that much more meaningful,” she says. The weaving of her Millbrook experience throughout the different aspects of her adult life not only brings a special passion to her stewardship as a class agent, but it is also proof of the impact of a Millbrook education.
Ken Brown ’65 Class Agent Ken Brown credits Millbrook with teaching him the discipline he needed to have a productive and meaningful adulthood. “I wasn’t applying myself when I first got to Millbrook,” he says. But his transformation during his time at Millbrook allowed him to pursue a degree at Yale post-graduation. “The transition to Yale was a breeze,” because of his preparation at Millbrook. He learned some of this discipline doing community service in the biology labs, where he says he learned the importance of “doing your best.” Ken became a class agent in 1976, having been recruited by Bob Anthony, and has found it to be a rewarding passion ever since. He was deeply invested in the 50th reunion for the class of 1965 and felt that both the experience and turnout were “remarkable.” Seeing people reconnect, who may have not seen each other in fifty years, was fulfilling and proved the importance of alumni participation in the Millbrook community. “Financial health is important for the mission of the school,” Ken says. He is excited for Millbrook’s ambitious improvement plans and knows that the Annual Fund is crucial to keeping the pace. He brings a special passion to his service as a class agent that is rooted in his own Millbrook transformation and understands that supporting the financial strength of the school is imperative to affording every opportunity to future students.

These included, “a challenging program in a beautiful environment, the many unique academic offerings, and a warm faculty that make all of the students feel comfortable. Tiffany also has a passion for animals, and only at the Trevor Zoo could she work so closely with so many of them.” Sue shares that she has come to know how helpful the school faculty and staff are and how closely they interact with parents, which made her decision to volunteer with the M.O.M.S. group easy. There is no question that they have gone out of their way to understand our son and build on his strengths.” As chairs of the Parent Annual Fund, Mark and Rochelle believe their work is critical to the operation of Millbrook and a way that they can do their share to participate as members of the Millbrook community. “Like all independent schools, tuition does not cover the full cost annual cost of an education. Now that we have been involved for the past two years and have seen the level of participation and record breaking generosity, we understand how committed parents and alumni are to supporting Millbrook.” They both encourage parents to get involved in the Annual Fund as a way to give back, participate in the life of the school, and, along the way, meet many other wonderful parents, faculty and members of the administration.

Headmaster’s Challenge The Headmaster’s Challenge, a new Annual Fund competition in honor of Drew Casertano’s 25th year as headmaster, was enormously successful and generated more participation and dollars from young alumni than ever before. Additionally, the total dollars raised by the winning class from each of two decades (the 90’s and the 00’s) was designated for Millbrook’s faculty professional development program. The decade winners were the class of 1999 and the class of 2003, raising $16,685.06 / $5,587.64 with 74% / 66% participation respectively. In addition to increased participation and overall giving, this challenge resulted in two other notable outcomes. Two alumni raised the bar by offering a matching gift of $10,000 for the first $10,000 raised in either new or increased gifts, which was easily met, and Headmaster Casertano dyed his hair blue and gray in a tribute to the outstanding participation of those who have been students here during his 25-year tenure.
