ANNUAL REPORT 2015-2016 1

Dear Members of the Millbrook Family, On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I want to thank all of you for your generous support for Millbrook School over the past year. Your generosity and partnership with the school, along with the tireless efforts of our dedicated faculty, staff, and administrators, have resulted in a richer, more meaningful experience for Millbrook students and have allowed us to build a stronger, more enduring foundation for a school that will continue to serve generations of boys and girls in the future. It all starts with your financial support, for which we are deeply grateful. We are nearing the successful close of the school’s capital campaign, and your support has been broad and deep. The past year saw us break records both for total giving to the school and Annual Fund total, monies that enable us to fund the programs that make Millbrook, Millbrook. The most obvious example of this is the new dining hall that was completed this spring. It represents the most significant building project in recent memory, a building that will shape the lives of generations of Millbrook students for decades to come while providing an immediate benefit to current students as a place for the entire campus to gather and break bread. More than just a beautiful, comfortable space, upgrades to the kitchen facilities will result in an improvement in the quality of food service, allow us to better integrate the school garden into meals and our curriculum, and enable us to be even more intentional in making nutrition and health choices a core aspect of our program. Increased funding and a new home for our Maintenance Department allow us to pursue new physical plant priorities while adequately caring for and maintaining the beautiful campus that we already have. This year we have also begun a major renovation of the historic Mill into a zoo visitor and education center, and we’ve continued to improve lighting and landscaping around campus. And most significantly, we have taken major steps in our covenant with our faculty, breaking ground on a new faculty housing complex that will significantly expand our inventory of housing, fulfilling our promise to provide these outstanding, dedicated men and women comfortable homes where they can raise their own families.

Millbrook School

As impressive as the growth of our physical campus has been, it is the increased financial support from our parents, alumni, and friends that has enabled us to continually enhance the educational, athletic, residential, and leadership programs we offer to our students. It is our ability to provide unparalleled opportunities for students to discover and develop their best selves through exploration and learning in academics, arts, and athletics while being mentored by an exceptional and dedicated faculty in an intentionally small, caring community setting that continues to be the hallmark of a Millbrook education. Preserving, maintaining, enhancing, and perpetuating this mission is what continues to drive the board and our distinguished headmaster every day. As Drew Casertano begins his second quarter century of service to Millbrook School, we have much to be grateful for and many successes to celebrate but also much unfinished business and many ambitious plans. The future is very bright, and we thank you for your wonderful support of this institution and the people who bring it to life. I look forward to a continued partnership with you as we move onward. With many thanks and every good wish,

William L. Menard ’78 Chairman of the Board of Trustees

ALUMNI WEEKEND 2016

A time to

Celebrate and be

Thankful In early June alumni journeyed down School Road once again to celebrate, reconnect, and reminisce with friends and faculty on campus. Those in attendance celebrated four Millbrook graduates, who were recognized for serving their school with distinction, and honored Rick McWilliams, who retired after 40 years as a Millbrook teacher, coach, advisor, and mentor. The weekend also included special reunion dinners for the classes of 1966 and 1991, master classes with Bill Hardy and Mark Clizbe, the annual Alumni Parade and assembly in the chapel, and dancing under the tent. Alumni were thrilled to enjoy lunch and dinner in the just completed, beautiful new dining hall.

2016 Alumni Weekend

Alumni applauded the tremendous amount of good news shared by Headmaster Drew Casertano in his annual State of the School Address. He confirmed that Millbrook’s mission remains clear and true to what Mr. Pulling intended in 1931—to prepare our students for college and for lives of meaning and consequence—and he elucidated the many ways that we continue to strive for excellence in all that we do. Alumni learned about the growth of our enrollment to 310, the renovations of our historic buildings and addition of new facilities, the conversion of our entire campus to 100% solar power, and our continuing goal of raising the endowment to support competitive faculty wages, continuing campus improvements, and financial aid for deserving students. In Headmaster Casertano’s words, “All of this is made possible by the exceptional work of our board of trustees, led by Bill Menard ’78, the exceptional work of the faculty, and the support of our friends, parents, and alumni. For your pride, your encouragement, and your loyal and generous support, we thank you.”

Cum Laude Book Signing We gladly welcomed back returning alumni who had been inducted into the Cum Laude Society as students, and we held a special book signing for this group in front of our new Cum Laude display in Schoolhouse. We look forward to continuing this new tradition each year during Alumni Weekend. Those in attendance included Ken Brown ’65, Doug Curtiss ’66, Katie Simonds Krug ’96, Peter Murphy ’76, and John Dubaz ’76.

banking, philanthropy, commerce, and industry. Additionally, the John Frank Art Fund at Millbrook has provided support for the acquisition of various paintings and sculptures that grace the exterior spaces around our campus and the interior of the Holbrook Arts Center. And it was John who was responsible for the construction of the attractive stone walls along School Road. John is a collector of art and of friends who admire his service, his eclectic taste, and his dry sense of humor.

Kristyn E. Reid ’74 was awarded a Millbrook Medal for her long and devoted service to our school and to so many in this community.

When John was a young student here, he became involved in numerous and varied activities on campus. He played squash, served as baseball manager, worked on the aquarium, the Milk Bar, and the Library Committee, chaired the Chapel and Dramatics committees, was on the Fire Department, served as editor-in-chief of the Tamarack, and sang in the Glee Club. He was a young man for all seasons. Today, it is his joy of quiet involvement and behind the scenes work where John likes to make a difference in the lives of people and institutions. At Millbrook especially, John has enhanced the quality of our school in numerous ways. Along with the Burton D. Morgan Foundation he established the John V. Frank Lecture Series to bring outstanding young entrepreneurs to campus to speak with our students about their work in varied fields including economics, finance and

THE MILLBROOK MEDAL and improved Millbrook’s landscape right away. Kris quickly became a popular and outgoing student, and she and her new band of sisters and brothers set about to make Millbrook a special place and one they have cared deeply about ever since. Immediately after her graduation in 1974, Kris played an active role in Millbrook affairs. She joined our Alumni Executive Committee right after her graduation from Skidmore College, and she found meaningful ways to interact with our students on a regular basis. Kris returned to campus every year to perform community service—whether it was planting trees or painting the old red stables, she was eager to make a contribution. She then suggested and became involved in leading “Career Days,” when she and other alumni returned to campus to talk with our undergrads about the unlimited possibilities and rewarding and interesting career options that were just a few short years ahead of them. For a time Kris served as the first female president of the Alumni Association, serving as a board member for 15 years from 1988 to 2003.

Dan bleeds Millbrook blue in every way. Ever since his graduation from Millbrook 30 years ago, he has remained closely connected to his alma mater. While earning his BA in Journalism and Metropolitan Studies at NYU, Dan first began serving as a class agent for the Class of 1986. He was one of our most loyal and effective class agents, and he set the bar high for others who are now filling his shoes. For many years Dan has run his own filmmaking company, Undara Productions, and Millbrook School is chief among his impressive and lengthy list of clients. Working in tandem with our Communications Office since 2005, Dan has interviewed hundreds of students, faculty, alumni, and trustees as an essential first step in the process of making three critically acclaimed films about our school: Down School Road, chronicling Millbrook’s first 75 years, Across the Pond, focused on the prominent role the Trevor Zoo has played at Millbrook since 1936, and Better By Design, highlighting the first quarter century of Drew and Linda Casertano’s leadership at our school.

Daniel S. Cohen ’86 was honored with a Millbrook Medal for his countless contributions and absolute devotion to Millbrook School.

Additionally, his work with current Zoo Director Alan Tousignant has brought international fame to the Trevor Zoo with live cameras, both at ground level and in the treetops, filming our birds and other zoo residents and sharing our animals’ (including endangered species) real-time and often captivating experiences via multiple social media outlets.

Special Awards Edward Pulling Community Service Award Julian Strauss ’54 Julian Strauss lives, breathes and embodies Millbrook’s motto: Non Sibi Sed Cunctis (Not just for oneself, but for all). During Alumni Weekend we were delighted to acknowledge his selfless work both globally and locally. After graduating from Millbrook, Julian moved on to Cornell University where he majored in Animal Husbandry and Rural Sociology, earning his Bachelors of Science degree in 1960. The following year, Julian received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from New York State Veterinary College. He continued his studies at Harvard University’s School of Public Health, where he majored in Tropical Public Health and received his masters in 1967. In 1961 Julian was a staff veterinarian at the Albert Schweitzer Hospital in Haiti. In addition to establishing a veterinary clinic, Julian successfully organized farmers’ cooperatives in that region. He was responsible for initiating the first public health efforts in terms of latrine building, school immunizations, and hygiene classes. He trained Haitian veterinary assistants, and together they developed a hospital, dairy and beef herd, and poultry flock. Various other posts took Julian to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, where he served as veterinarian for Malaysia’s National Zoo, and he was Administrative Secretary for the Inter-American Development Bank in Washington, D.C, overseeing the construction of new buildings and equipment purchase for two colleges, six secondary schools, and an experimental farm in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. From 1971 to 1974, Julian was a Research Fellow at Harvard School of Public Health. We especially appreciate his professional expertise and work with our students and staff here at the Trevor Zoo. As our consulting veterinarian, he has performed surgeries and necropsies on site, ably assisted by our zoo community service groups. His patient and calm demeanor are instructive and invaluable guideposts.

Commencement 2016 In a celebration of growth, success, community, and tradition, hundreds of friends and family joined us on the Flagler Quad for Commencement on May 29, 2016. The weekend was both emotional and celebratory as the Class of 2016 bid farewell to Millbrook. Commencement traditions began with Senior Dinner, and the graduates and their families were thrilled to be the first to enjoy a meal in our new dining hall. The grand 23-foot ceilings, traditional aesthetic, and floor-to-ceiling windows, welcomed our guests and made for a spectacular backdrop for celebrating our VIth formers. Prize Night and Last Night services rounded out Saturday evening. The Millbrook community gathered then on Sunday morning to celebrate our graduates. Francisco Borges ’70, Millbrook board member, alumnus, and uncle to Dan Correia ’16 and Caleb King ’13, welcomed all in attendance. “Today, a fourth member of my family, my nephew Daniel, joins his cousin Caleb and his uncle Peter (Class of 1976), as a Millbrook alumnus. They, and I, benefitted immensely from the impressive abilities and extraordinary dedication exhibited every day by the men and women of the Millbrook faculty and administration.” Robert Koenigsberger, Millbrook board member and father of Amber ’13 and Ilayda ’16, gave the commencement address, which was rich in advice for our new graduates. Students and faculty very much appreciated Mr. Koenigsberger’s thoughtful and wise words: “Remember what makes Millbrook, Millbrook,” said Mr. Koenigsberger, who encouraged students to continue living Non Sibi Sed Cunctis as they embark on their post-Millbrook adventures. The VIth formers elected classmate Olly Cohen to deliver this year’s VIth Form Commencement Address. He reflected on his time at Millbrook and his lessons learned. He urged his classmates to be passionate, take time to stop and reflect, maintain a positive attitude, and take risks. Headmaster Drew Casertano then presented three special awards to VIth formers: the Sportsmanship Cup to Liesje Bluestone, the Community Service Cup to Heidi Reiss, and Summa Cum Laude to Maggie Guo. He also honored Rick McWilliams with a Sportsmanship Cup in recognition of his 40 years of service to Millbrook as a longtime athletic director, coach, and teacher: “In the history of Millbrook School, no one has done more to advance the culture of sportsmanship.” After the presentation of diplomas and the ceremony’s conclusion, students and faculty moved to the “cry line” to exchange words, hugs, and handshakes. It was an exciting and emotional day as another class in the Millbrook family began the next chapter of their lives.

Senior Profiles

Maggie Guo College attending: Rhode Island School of Design Major: graphic design Commencement awards: Summa Cum Laude, Cum Laude, Nathaniel B. Abbott Cup

Alex Chalk College attending: Hamilton College Major: to be decided, but definitely explorations in science and art

Art can be seen as something that defined Maggie’s Millbrook experience. As a new student living in a foreign country, English was a daunting challenge. Art was initially her “escape” but quickly became a way for her to interact, communicate, and practice her English skills. Practice certainly paid off—Maggie graduated Summa Cum Laude, top of her class. While four years ago, she could not have imagined that writing an analytical essay could be easy, she credits Millbrook for helping her develop excellent writing skills. One of her favorite courses, Art History, taught by Mr. Zeiser and Mr. Hardy, also exposed her to the intricacies of philosophy, poetry, and visual arts, which allowed Maggie to develop a complex and unique style in her own art. It will be interesting to see how her style evolves as she learns and grows at the Rhode Island School of Design in the coming years.

16

Millbrook School

Commencement awards: Cum Laude, Science Prize, Roosevelt Prize In his time at Millbrook, Alex had a passion for two things: photography and the sciences. At the science symposium he proudly displayed the data and samples he acquired while studying the effect the Trevor Zoo has on Millbrook’s biological footprint. Through his research Alex managed to capture some truly captivating photos of the microscopic specimens he was studying. It is this intersection of Alex’s interest in science and art that makes Hamilton College the best place to continue his education. The open curriculum will allow Alex to surround himself with students who are taking classes because of their interests rather than mandated requirements. He hopes that his future teachers bring the same level of enthusiasm for their subject matter as Ms. Goodale did in his time at Millbrook—“Her love of science and the environment is contagious!”

Commencement 2016

Senior Profiles

Olly Cohen College attending: Washington University, St. Louis Major: undecided Commencement awards: Peter Jon Wallace ’60 Commencement Prize, Cum Laude, Clark Language Prize As this year’s class speaker at Commencement, Olly exuded confidence. This confidence is something that grew during his time at Millbrook, and it is what is going to take him around the world for a gap year before starting his studies at Washington University. Though his major is undecided as of now, he might find what he is passionate about while he is volunteering in Chile, participating in the Diving and Marine Conservation Program in Thailand, or living on a kibbutz in Israel. He’ll certainly be asking plenty of questions along his journey, as he says he learned to do in Mr. Zeiser’s English classroom, and he’ll be constantly re-evaluating how he looks at the world, a lesson he is thankful to Mr. Powers for teaching. His advisor, Mr. Clizbe, is sure he will continue to attack every challenge with an iron will while applying a laser focus to whatever task is in front of him. “He is that unusual dedicated scholar with a great sense of humor, not least about himself.”

Liesje Bluestone College attending: Skidmore College Major: education, math Commencement award: Sportsmanship Cup, Four-Year Varsity Letter Award As a four-year varsity athlete, Liesje was a member of several teams recognized for sportsmanship. It is no surprise then that Liesje says that one of the most important things she learned at Millbrook is that the little things matter and can add up. In other areas of school life, guidance from teachers like Mrs. Clizbe helped Liesje to focus on the positive while pushing her to strive to her fullest potential. The size of Millbrook and the personal connections that she was able to develop here influenced her college search, as she knew she wanted a similar environment at the next level. As she begins at Skidmore College, she intends to study education and mathematics; she hopes to one day make meaningful connections with students and spread the power of positivity to future generations.

Senior Profiles

Patrick Qian College attending: Vanderbilt University

Heidi Reiss

Major: psychology, medicine and health

College attending: University of Southern California

Commencement awards: Cum Laude, Blaine Essay Prize, Sykes Mathematics Prize

Major: pre-med

Patrick truly embraced his curiosity at Millbrook and was unafraid to explore ideas outside of his comfort zone. Following Mr. Clizbe’s encouragement, he strove to challenge his conventional beliefs and see things from a different perspective. It is this attitude that earned Patrick honors recognition for his CES presentation that explored meditation and its effect on academic performance, a topic he only became interested in as a VIth former. With a sharp academic focus, Patrick is hoping that the culture of Vanderbilt University, an environment full of passion and energy, will push him to explore more as he considers degrees in psychology and medicine, health and society.

18

Millbrook School

Commencement awards: Cum Laude, Community Service Cup, Four-Year Varsity Letter Award, McSweeney Tour Guide Award Heidi presented at the CES Festival on the topic of sports physiology, having studied some of Millbrook’s top athletes in order to help improve performance and prevent future injury. She plans to continue similar research on a larger scale at The University of Southern California where she intends to pursue a pre-med degree. Heidi says that Millbrook taught her to develop the grit necessary to succeed by always working hard, accepting obstacles, and not making excuses, so she should have no problems excelling in a field she is already passionate about. She hopes to have professors at USC similar to Mr. Clizbe, who encouraged her to step back from the note-taking and just engage in the conversation. There is no doubt that Heidi will engage at USC and make the most of her experience there. As her advisor, Mrs. Downs, told the school audience on Prize Night, “When she’s committed to something, she’s focused and fierce, tough and tender. And she demands the very best from herself and her peers.”

Commencement 2016

Senior Profiles

Dan Correia College attending: Quinnipiac University Major: business Commencement awards: Class of 1978 Award, Four-Year Varsity Letter Award Managing academics while being a prefect and multisport athlete can be difficult task to navigate, but Dan made it look easy. Aside from learning the valuable skill of time management, he was able to take advantage of Millbrook’s ideal size to make lasting connections with his teachers and peers. Teachers like Mr. Powers kept Dan excited and engaged and made him want to dig deeper in the learning process. Dan is hoping to find the same level of engagement with his professors as he sets out to study business at Quinnipiac University. The size of the school, location, and rigorous academics suit Dan’s personality well, though chances are he would have no problem finding his place at any college.

Rives Milbank College attending: University of Virginia Major: architecture Commencement awards: English Poetry Prize Rives loves learning for the sake of learning and always looks beyond the surface to understand things at a deeper level. At Millbrook she dove into her passions fully and brought her curiosity and caring to the classroom and to the Trevor Zoo as a curator. Now she is intent on having an active learning experience at the architecture school at UVA, where she looks forward to designing functional and artistic living spaces. An avid reader and writer of poetry, Rives appreciates the prolific feedback Ms. Tarnasky provided her, which allowed her to continually improve her writing skills, and she hopes that her professors at UVA treat students there with the same genuine respect she felt everyday in Mr. Zeiser’s classroom.

Senior Profiles

Isabella Buccellati Carter Malleolo College attending: Boston College Major: undecided, focus on business

College attending: Syracuse University Major: undecided Commencement awards: Cum Laude, Headmaster’s Merit Award, Vocal Music Award

Commencement awards: Cum Laude At the next stage of his education, Carter wants to enjoy the very best attributes that Millbrook offered him including class sizes that prevent him from being just another face in a classroom and competitive sports, where he can hit the sidelines and rally behind teams no matter the season. Boston College is just the place Carter was looking for. Though his specific major is undecided, he plans to study business. Driven to succeed, Carter has never been afraid to push his limits, and Millbrook faculty taught him never to be afraid to ask for help. Confident in himself and unafraid to be vulnerable, Carter will take on this new chapter with the same determination and motivation that were so apparent at Millbrook.

20

Millbrook School

Fellow classmate and graduation speaker Olly Cohen described Isabella as the most confident performer on the Millbrook stage. Her undeniable vocal talents contributed to many memorable arts nights and winter musical performances, and we are excited to follow Isabella as she hits the stage at Syracuse University, a school with endless arts offerings and an arts program held in high regard. She is hoping to have professors like Mrs. Lifter who can encourage her passion in the face of new challenges. While Isabella says that one of the biggest values she learned at Millbrook was independence, she was also fond of the sense of community and school spirit here. Syracuse will be lucky to have Isabella, as she was arguably the loudest and most animated participant during this year’s Winter Weekend Pep Rally.

Senior Profiles

Alessandro Buccellati College attending: New York University, Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music

Siena Buffa College attending: University of Denver

Major: recorded music

Major: business management

Commencement awards: Instrumental Music Award

Commencement awards: Cum Laude, Headmaster’s Merit Award, Four-Year Varsity Letter Award

NYU’s outstanding faculty and prime campus location will provide Alessandro with distinct advantages as he pursues a career in music while focusing on entrepreneurial studies, deal making, mixing and mastering, and music marketing strategies. It’s also the sense of community, something he loved most about Millbrook, that he is looking forward to at college, as faculty help him network with other songwriters, producers, and singers both at NYU and outside of school. His friendships with a diverse group at Millbrook and lessons on working with a wide variety of people taught him the importance of communication and working together to achieve the best results in any project, and teachers like Mr. Hart and Mr. Powers imparted valuable life lessons and skills (like organization and staying politically educated) that he carries with him at NYU. Over the next four years he looks forward to continuing to learn from compassionate educators like them.

An honors student, prefect, three-season varsity athlete, and dorm leader, Siena certainly had many opportunities to become a leader on campus. Siena credits Millbrook faculty for helping her identify her weaknesses and develop the skill sets to constantly improve—lessons that will impact her for the rest of her life. Recognizing challenges and digging in to rise above them is what she learned from teachers like Mr. Clizbe, Mrs. Clizbe, and Mr. Zeiser. Formulating thoughtful arguments and supporting them with convincing evidence will be her continuing goal in her classes at the University of Denver.

Playwrights, scientists, humanitarians, photographers, historians, musicians, and more took their place on the CES stage in May to share their insights, struggles, lessons, passions, fears, and joys. The following summaries represent the honors-winning independent research and subsequent presentations on the grand ideas that germinated and blossomed as a result of their experiences at Millbrook.

Scars and Tattoos

Tie-ing Up The Millbrook Experience

Julia took photographs of the scars and tattoos of members of the Millbrook community and crafted a beautifully designed hardcover book to tell the stories behind the body art. Her own story is included therein. Through interviewing and photographing members of the Millbrook community with scars and tattoos, Julia was able to reflect on those life experiences that “leave a mark.” She compiled her favorite images and interviews into a book, which was donated to the Flagler Memorial Library and tells stories of perseverance, mourning, accomplishment, and so much more.

Being passionate about fashion, community, and their alma mater resulted in Grace and Noah designing and creating new Millbrook ties that are currently on sale in the School Store. They spent months producing various designs and gathering feedback from the Millbrook community. Ultimately, Noah and Grace chose a “quieter” design that they felt blended Millbrook’s traditional aesthetic with contemporary fashion trends, and they produced 100 silk ties and bowties. Noah and Grace designated profits from the sale of all of their ties to benefit the Allen Fund.

Siena Buffa

83 Pictures Later By creating a portrait for each member of the VIth form, Siena was able to reflect on her Millbrook experience through photography. “Millbrook’s motto is Non Sibi Sed Cunctis, and I wanted my CES project to illustrate that I learned the importance of being a part of something larger than myself during my time here,” said Siena. Beyond taking and editing each photo, she also interviewed each classmate and reflected upon the meanings of unity and teamwork throughout her process. Her final display of portraits was captivating, and each photo provides a unique perspective on the VIth form experience.

Alex Van

The Art of Narcissism Alex explored an essential question about how painting self-portraits helped her discover her identity as an artist and person. In her presentation Alex conveyed how a good portrait goes beyond physical looks or appearances and is more centered on “the emotions being conveyed through the process of painting.” Using examples of work from Frida Kahlo, Vivian Maier, and William Utermohlen, Alex enlightened faculty and peers by showing how these artists explored their inner selves, before she used examples of her own art to show both struggle and resolve. Her faculty judges and peers clearly saw the connections she made of “art as an expressive vehicle and self as a perpetual unknown.”

Arthur Meadowcroft

Bounty of the Brook Arthur set out to create a book that captured his “customized Millbrook experience” by sharing his favorite things to do over long weekends and during his free time. His final product, a 44-page book, is a compilation of the best places to eat, stay and get active in Millbrook and the surrounding areas, and it is now published as a resource in the Admission Office for visiting families. While Arthur shared specific favorites of his own, he felt it was important to represent a wider voice, so he interviewed students and faculty and surveyed alumni to ask for their opinions. His book includes overviews, personal narrative, lists, and many photos, and it will undoubtedly be a fantastic resource for visiting families.

Ariana Montenegro

Tell My Story We are the stories we tell—finding connections in our humanity. Ariana interviewed 17 members of the Millbrook community, recorded and transcribed the interviews, and then selected five to “perform” at the CES Festival. Basing her performance on the documentary theater style of Anna Deveare Smith, Ariana aimed to capture the intonation, physical stance, setting, and costume that she envisioned when each story was originally told to her. Through her work Ariana was able to find connections among a wide range of individuals and discern resonant themes including grief, misunderstanding, loss, love, hope, and triumph.

Olivia Galli

Traditional Prints, Modern People As an American student with Argentine and African roots, Olivia used textiles to bring her heritage to the school community. Pulling African textiles from a shop near her home in Chicago, Olivia used them within portraits of Millbrook students and faculty, pairing up subjects with patterns that she felt related to their personalities. Olivia chose to display her framed photographs in the chapel because of its primary importance as a gathering place for the entire Millbrook community. When she arrived at Millbrook, Olivia had little intent to pursue art beyond what was simply required. She quickly fell in love with photography and took courses all four years, ultimately applying to and being accepted at the Art Institute of Chicago, where she continues her study of photography today.

Sophia Hartman

Lemurs That Learn As a Trevor Zoo student curator, Sophia worked with our black-andwhite lemurs over the period of several months, teaching lemurs how to count! How many other high school students can say that? Sophia’s research centered around the higher cognitive function found in primates and whether or not lemurs in captivity, with daily handling by humans, are still able to activate the parts of their brain that control pattern recognition and memory. Using index cards labeled with dots (one through nine), she trained them to quantify the cards and to understand that nine has a greater value than one, with the ultimate goal of having them put the cards in number order. By touching the cards correctly, the lemurs were awarded with treats. Sophia’s project paralleled undergraduate and even graduate research, and now she looks forward to further research in college!

Alex Chalk

Why Did the Zoo Cross the Road? Alex’s ambitious project took him throughout Millbrook’s campus and across state lines to Hotchkiss and Salisbury—in this rather “dirty” job he analyzed bacterial growth and types of bacteria present. The spot with the greatest number of bacteria and most varied kind? The Trevor Zoo, of course! He sampled bacteria from multiple locations, monitored his petri dishes closely as the bacteria colonies multiplied (over 12,400 to be exact), and identified the bacteria type within each colony. His science teacher, Ava Goodale ’01, commended Alex for his ownership, autonomy, resourcefulness, innovativeness, and his adhering to the strictest of scientific standards. An avid fan of the sciences at Millbrook, Alex loved this project more than any other during his four years here because it was one he designed and led through completion.

Gavin Schneible

BritQuick BritQuick, an iPhone app, was Gavin’s brainchild to allow users to quickly search and translate common words and phrases that differ between American English and British English. Growing up in New York but having parents of British descent, Gavin was exposed to words and phrases at home that would confuse his friends and classmates when he used them in school. He had always searched for a way to translate these differences quickly and easily. Enter BritQuick. Gavin developed this iPhone app, consisting of more than 1700 searchable words and phrases, to help others bridge the language gap. The app shows a corresponding translation, a definition, the part of speech, the region of the British dialect and an example sentence. Though BritQuick currently lives only on his computer, Gavin has plans to improve the app as his knowledge of coding grows, and hopes to one day soon make the app available to everyone on the App Store.

Patrick Qian

When You Mix Hippies and Nerds As a VIth former, Patrick took to meditation as a new hobby to help him clear his mind and organize his thoughts. Being an analytical student interested in numbers and associations, Patrick wanted to explore the effects of meditation on academic performance. He designed an experiment to measure his peer’s performance of simple tasks after short periods of guided meditation. Optimistic about his results, Patrick encouraged all Millbrook students to explore the value of meditation, something he hopes to do further as he learns the techniques that benefit him most.

Alex Wattles

My Bridge If you build it, they will run.

Heidi Reiss

Exploring Exercise

As an underform student on the cross country team, Alex logged countless miles on the cross country trail. Year after year Alex took notice that one of the bridges along the trail in the woods continued to deteriorate. As a self-proclaimed lover of building and tinkering, he thought he would increase his scope and build something bigger for his CES. Alex spent countless hours planning, measuring, and constructing a new bridge for the cross-country trail, and as he heads off to college with plans to be an engineer, he is excited to have left a physical legacy that will benefit the school for years to come.

As a tri-varsity athlete, Heidi found herself wondering if there were ways of increasing performance by giving targeted feedback based on analytical data to both female and male athletes that excel in different sports. With the help of video and biometric measuring tools, Heidi measured the performance of her peers and compared them to averages for athletes performing at the Division 1 level in college. Based on the data she found, Heidi was then able to advise athletes on specific exercises, stretches and techniques to help them improve problem areas and optimize performance in their respective sport. Thanks to Heidi, some of Millbrook’s top athletes were able take measureable steps to improve their performance as they went head to head with their biggest rivals.

Brandon Hyun

It’s All in Your Head Brandon used artistic expression to portray how the human mind gathers information and develops ideas. Discovering his passion for art during his VIth form year, his CES project offered him his first opportunity to work from a concept and create an installation. This was a welcome challenge as Brandon felt that a project of this scale would culminate his experience as an artist at Millbrook. His final works, which were crafted from plaster, wood, strategically chosen objects, and paint among other materials, illustrate the timeline of the development of human ideas from his perspective.

David Yu

Mission Impossible: Overthrowing the North Korean Government

For effective dissent, David suggests simply looking to the past. David’s CES was an extension of his compelling Blaine essay about a more effective way for the North Korean people to dissent against the government. In an age of sharing everything on social media, David argues that an underground, print-based way of discussing grievances would provide a foundation for more active dissent. He thinks that North Korean dissidents could model their efforts on the samizdat system used by Soviet dissidents in the middle of the 20th century, and that this could be an effective unified effort. David’s research and presentation not only earned honors recognition for his CES, but he was also one of five finalists chosen for the Blaine Essay Award.

Emma Westermann

Complexions 2.0 Emma created and designed her own choreography to illustrate her growth as an individual and dancer during her time at Millbrook. Formally trained in ballet, she first learned about contemporary choreography in the Millbrook dance studio. As a result, she pursued a two-week dance intensive with a company, Complexions, in New York City during the summer of 2015. There, she found a passion for the blending of traditional ballet technique and contemporary movement, which she decided she wanted to bring back to Millbrook as her CES Project. Emma led a group of four dancers through five rehearsals in preparation for her culminating performance. It was her first time choreographing a piece for a group and leading a group through rehearsals. Given that she discovered her passion for contemporary choreography and developed her leadership skills at Millbrook, it was fitting that her CES project brought together her love of dance and an opportunity to lead. Bravo, Emma!

Tori Merkle

What Makes Television Tick? Combining her creative passion for writing, film, and directing, Tori drafted scripts to express different television genres, then filmed and edited a short piece for each. Tori’s CES project offered her the opportunity to channel these three passions to create three very entertaining and creative pieces. Focusing on television challenged her to create very different genres of work and to reflect on what characteristics make each genre unique. Her project also required her to balance her creativity with organization, patience, and focus, in order to complete her project on time. At her final presentation she shared what she learned from the experience, the three television pilot trailers that she created, and even a fun bloopers reel!

Facilities

Dining Hall “The new dining hall will be the most important building constructed at Millbrook since the chapel.” So said Gil Schafer ‘80, chairman of the Physical Resources Committee of the Board of Trustees, when presenting this new facility for their consideration. He was exactly right. In a school where everything we teach is in the context of community, the dining hall is where the community—students, faculty and staff and their families—gather multiple times every day.

Construction of the 12,000 square foot dining hall was completed under budget and two months in advance of the target date, allowing the class of 2016 and their parents to enjoy their Senior Dinner in this beautiful new space. Shortly thereafter, alumni who returned for reunion festivities in early June were amazed at how the new building, so beautiful and substantial, is seamlessly integrated into the campus they remember. Upon the opening of school in September, students and faculty alike were thrilled with the new facility, and, as anticipated, it is at the center of the Millbrook community. Headmaster Drew Casertano spoke at the first seated advisor lunch, a new addition to the schedule this year: “The new dining hall represents our values in every way—from being built and designed to the highest environmental standards, to being directly linked to the campus farm. And with our enrollment now over 300, we are enjoying this new facility daily.”

Facilities

The Chapel The Flagler Memorial Chapel has been at the center of our community since its completion in 1949. Millbrook’s thoughtful and intentional evolution has brought us to a full enrollment of 313 students, resulting in a need for increased seating in this important gathering space. In 2015 we began the process of determining how to accomplish this goal without altering the traditional aesthetic, and we found a local carpenter who was

Cavanaugh Field and Callard Field

able to create replicas of our original pews, which were placed in back when the existing pews were all moved up very slightly. While visually it looks the same, the Flagler Memorial Chapel can now seat an additional 26 people, a slight but important difference.

Leveled from the hillside in the early 2000s, our upper fields have been put to good use since for soccer, field hockey, and lacrosse. It was just recently that they were officially named, and two new scoreboard signs were installed over the summer. The first, on the field closest to campus, is now Cavanaugh Field, named in honor of Jen ’03, Brooke ’04, and Allie ’08 Cavanaugh. Donors John and Nancy Cavanaugh were always proud parents and have now become proud grandparents as Hannah ’18 started at Millbrook this fall. Callard Field, the furthest of the upper fields, was donated by Jesse Bontecou ’44 in honor of longtime faculty member, Assistant Headmaster and Headmaster (1969-1970) Henry Callard. Jessie played guard and end during his football career at Millbrook, so it is fitting that Millbrook’s new 8 man football team will kick-off for the first time on this field in October.

Faculty Milestones: Rick McWilliams 40 years

It was a joy for us to celebrate Rick McWilliams long and meritorious career—he achieved so much and had such great impact on so many lives during his Millbrook tenure as a teacher, coach, dorm parent, advisor, and athletic director. Students, faculty, and alumni gathered at his final soccer game last fall to mark his incredible coaching career. We named Rick an honorary coach at our Alumni Hockey Game in February, and, with the help of former headmaster Don Abbott ’63, we splashed Rick’s name and a congratulatory message across the Fenway Park scoreboard last spring. In May the board of trustees acknowledged and saluted Rick’s service at a formal dinner, and during Commencement, Drew Casertano awarded Rick the Sportsmanship Cup. Most meaningful of all, Rick and his wife, Cindy, were joined during Alumni Weekend for a truly special event. Son Trevor ’01 and daughter Carly ’05 spoke, as did Paul Simons ’83, Jean Kindred Wilmerding ’85, Bob Otter ’93, and Tim Healy ’97, and current students shared messages of thanks, personal stories, and heartfelt best wishes throughout the year as Rick prepared to retire. Here, we share part of Headmaster Drew Casertano’s tribute during the 2016 Faculty Honors Dinner:

During Reunion Weekend so many alumni spoke about how they are much the better for Rick McWilliams’ caring, commitment and skill. So, too, is Millbrook. Those thanks and Rick’s legacy will live on with the naming of McWilliams Field, to be dubbed McWilly Field in the campus lexicon. As Trevor McWilliams said in his beautiful and moving tribute to his father, “On a boarding school campus, nicknames (those that can be said out loud and in public anyway) are hard earned and a sign of respect. So, McWilly Field it will be.” A wise friend of mine once wrote that each of us should be able to summarize our lives in one sentence. Rick, as my thanks to you, here is my version of your sentence, “He is a good and authentic man, who, with Cindy, raised impressive children, and who achieved much and contributed more in the career and life he chose and loved.”

Dr. Alan Tousignant 25 years

Alan Tousignant has played an integral role in the development of the Trevor Zoo over the past 25 years, and in the summer of 2013 he stepped easily into the role of zoo director, which is but one of his many roles on campus. He is, most importantly and always, a teacher, whether working with students in Animal Behavior class, teaching new zooies how to feed an animal, or helping members of zoo squad add new branches to an exhibit. From introduction by Headmaster Drew Casertano at the 2016 Faculty Honors Dinner:

As comfortable and effective on a backhoe as he is in the classroom or running a marathon or planning a project, Alan is truly a protean figure, whose broad abilities, deep commitment, unwavering optimism and exceptional work ethic have resulted in his being effective and respected in every corner of the campus. Amidst Alan’s myriad accomplishments and contributions to Millbrook, what stands out is his uncommon ability to help young boys become young men. More often than not, Alan puts them to work; he gives them real responsibility with sturdy tools and healthy doses of understanding and sage advice. Then, the transformation begins.

Fac u lt y FA RE W E L L S Liz Duhoski Morrison Of her 28 years as an educator, Liz Morrison (fondly referred to by students and many alumni as “Du”) spent 19 of those years at Millbrook as a teacher, coach, and college counselor. After many years as the director of College Counseling, Liz was appointed dean of students in 2010 and then assistant head of school two years later. While Liz’s two children, Xan ’10 and Ben ’14, grew up on campus, she was a “second mom” to countless other students. Liz leaves Millbrook for a very good reason, as she was named the new head of school at the Antilles School in St. Thomas. They are fortunate to have her, and she will surely make a difference there as she continues on her course to oversee an excellent academic program that educates each student as a whole child. Several colleagues paid tribute to Liz at the yearend faculty dinner to express their love, admiration, and best wishes, and this summary represents thoughts shared by Cam Hardy, Nancy Keller-Coffey, Kathy Havard, and Drew Casertano: During her time at Millbrook, Liz balanced a busy life as an administrator and single mom with an open door policy; through it all she was a rock-star role model to her son and daughter and a second mom to the steady flow of fac brats through that open door. Her home on campus was always an open, safe, judgement-free, fun, challenging and honest space to be any time of day or night.

38

Millbrook School

Clever and lighthearted is a reflection of her personality; she is also fearless, with a constant desire to challenge herself and others. Conversations with Liz, many over a cup of coffee, have helped all of us grow into our best selves. She has been a true friend, and through so many challenges she has helped us be better parents, more thoughtful educators, and truer selves. Liz is now ready for a new adventure. Her understanding of, interest in, and affection for students (teenagers, especially), is extraordinary. She is smart and multi-talented. She has boundless energy, and she possesses an uncommon ability to focus on what is right and what matters.

Somerset Waters After a career in business that included a top administrative position with Duracell International, Somerset started his second career as a teacher when he came to Millbrook in 2001. He retired in June of 2016 after 15 years teaching physics and astronomy, and the following excerpt is from a tribute by Science Department Chair Matt Dilley: Somerset considers things deeply—he develops a plan, and then he does it without any fanfare or grandstanding, delivering on the promises he makes to himself and to others. Somerset’s fans are legion, not just because he can do things men 25 years his junior cannot, but because he is a Renaissance man and understands the importance of persona. He graces our campus with his teaching, he raises the cultural and intellectual bar with each of his contributions—be it rallying a bus full of teenagers to see Beethoven at Hotchkiss or firing his green laser into the night sky to identify a star. He has lived well, and he will continue to do so in his own inimitable style.

Trustees

Boa r d of T ru st e e s N e ws Here we honor and thank trustees who are stepping down from the board after years of service, and we welcome our newest members.

Following the annual meeting of the Board of Trustees in early May, four outstanding board members stepped down after contributing to our school in substantial ways during their years of service.

Bill Hettinger After thirty years as a Millbrook trustee, Bill Hettinger ’77—father of Caroline ’01 and Charlie ’04—stepped down from active service and was elected an honorary trustee. No one is more deserving of this recognition and honor. Bill has provided leadership and vision in copious amounts, and his wisdom and common sense added tremendous value to his board service. Bill, his parents, and his wife, Corinna, and their two adult children have collectively worked with the school to re-imagine and develop the present day Trevor Zoo as well as to help support every new facility that has been built on campus during the past quarter of a century. We owe Bill a true debt of gratitude, and we are very pleased that he will remain closely involved in the years ahead as an honorary member of the board.

Tracy Merrill Tracy Merrill served Millbrook’s board for six years as a steady and quiet member. She made outstanding contributions on the School Life and Physical Resources Committees. She was an integral part of the planning of the renovation of the Barn and in the construction planning for West Hall and the new dining hall. Tracy and her husband, Joe, hosted countless well-attended admissions receptions in their New Canaan home. Therefore, it is not surprising that there is a fine group of families and students who

40

Millbrook School

attended these gatherings and subsequently became a part of the Millbrook family. Three of the Merrill’s four children are Millbrook graduates: Charlie ’09, Carrie ’11, and Emma ’13. Tracy and Joe have been, and remain especially interested in and focused on, supporting the Millbrook faculty in substantive ways. Our school has truly benefitted from Tracy’s and Joe’s vision and dedication, and the real and lasting impact of their work will guide the school community for years to come.

Christina Lang-Assael In addition to her board service for the past three years, Christina LangAssael is a wonderful and caring friend and neighbor. Mother of Robert ’15, Christina has been a key member of the Physical Resources and School Life Committees. She approached every project with tremendous attention to detail, and she lent her support to virtually every capital priority on campus including the renovation of the Mill. Christina was also a quiet but ardent believer in helping promising and talented students. She has made a real difference in transforming a number of students’ lives. We will miss her board service, but we are comforted that she will remain close by.

Bob Hallett In his three years on the board, Bob Hallett had a remarkable impact on our school and its future. An experienced educator and former school head, Bob brought vital expertise and energy to the table, working tirelessly to strengthen the experience for our faculty. A Maine resident, Bob braved several snowstorms to attend board meetings. He leaves Millbrook’s board to become chairman of the Edward E. Ford Foundation board. We thank Bob for his dedicated work. He has helped chart a path that will benefit Millbrook School and the faculty well into the future.

TED CHAPIN ’68 Making Things Happen, Creatively It was a short while after he graduated from Millbrook that Ted Chapin says he realized what an incredible experience his high school years had been; his affection for his alma mater was only enhanced when his daughter, Zoe ’03, decided that she would follow in her dad’s footsteps to Millbrook. The Millbrook experience was different but similar in many ways for father and daughter. Under the headmastership of Edward Pulling, Ted clearly remembers powerful lessons about discipline, community service, sportsmanship, and camaraderie. While he recalls fondly individual experiences—movies on Saturday nights in the Barn, speakers during chapel service, plays put on once a year—it is the big picture of his Millbrook experience that he still carries with him today. Ted credits Millbrook for developing his skill to “figure things out” and work creatively to problem solve with others, a skill that he puts to work constantly as the president and chief creative officer of Rodgers & Hammerstein. “Stephen Sondheim once paid me a true compliment by saying that I made creative things happen. I take that as a badge of honor. My career has been about figuring out how to do just that, make things happen… sometimes very hands on, sometimes just introducing the right people to each other. Learning how to negotiate among people, knowing we are all in service to something larger than ourselves—that started at Millbrook without any question.” From the beginning of his IIIrd form year, Ted was asked to use his skills to serve the common good. “I was tapped to play the organ for chapel services and castanets for a big dinner in the gymnasium to honor Mr. Pulling. These things needed to be done, so I took them on as a bit of an adventure.” Ted approached his entire Millbrook experience with this attitude, taking advantage of every opportunity to learn from the unique opportunities he was offered. “I had no interest in science, but I took Advanced Biology with Frank Trevor because I recognized he was probably one of the best teachers I would ever have.” Ted had a great interest in theater and participated in different ways in each of the plays during his four years. He’s come a long way from the stage in the Barn, as he has spearheaded over twenty award-winning Broadway and

Ted with daughter Zoe, on their way to the Tony Awards

London revivals, as well as several film and TV movie remakes and numerous recordings. Among other projects is the current new Broadway stage adaptation of the Irving Berlin movie Holiday Inn. At Millbrook Ted remains actively involved as an alumnus and past parent and a regular contributor to the Annual Fund. Having watched an uncle, a cousin, and his father (all Millbrook graduates) actively give back to Millbrook in the unique ways that they could, he has followed suit. Perhaps most importantly, Ted remains a true ambassador for Millbrook, “There have been a number of times over the years when people have heard I have a connection to Millbrook, and they reach out to ask about the school for sons or daughters. I am always happy to sing the school’s praises, and I will take at least partial credit for encouraging some good students to sign up.”

SABRINA (ACKERMAN) BLUESTONE ’82 When Opportunity Knocks, Embrace the Adventure Sabrina’s four years at Millbrook were filled with opportunity, which was just what she needed, particularly when her mother died during her junior year. “Millbrook carried me through that grief. There was so much for me to choose from, and the doors that opened for me—that is when I gained my self-confidence and saw that I could do anything that I wanted to do. I remember how helpful Aileen Tellerday was on my first day of soccer practice, I was so nervous. I had no soccer cleats, just Keds and a stupid t-shirt and no hair tie. She was a senior and took the time to help me out and give me all this stuff. Soccer became my #1 sport—I played four years at Millbrook and then at Skidmore.”

The Millbrook community was welcoming and supportive, and as Sabrina jumped into school life and sports, she learned to never fear failure. Every new event in her life has become an adventure, and that attitude has led to a successful career in asset management while raising four children, one of whom is handicapped. She learned early that you are as good as the people who work around you, and she focused on balancing just the right number of clients with family life until her two youngest children, Harrison ’15 and Liesje ’16, were enrolled at Millbrook. Her goal then was to double the size of her company—she tripled it! Sabrina’s work is not only about making a profit but also giving back to her community—another strong lesson she took away from Millbrook. She offers assistance to women who are leaving a battered home life and cannot find adequate housing. Looking beyond credit reports and “proper documentation,” Sabrina offers rental units when other property managers will not. “I look at the person as a whole. This is complicated work that requires confidentiality and trust, and there certainly are things that can go wrong with angry and disruptive fathers and husbands. But I have been in this business for so long that I have gained the trust of others. Now I am in a network where they seek me out.” Over the past few years as Sabrina read papers that Liesje wrote on the topic of community service at Millbrook, she thought about how service is really just another part of daily life, and, whether serving on the PTA for a decade or organizing dorm feeds at Millbrook, it’s all about being a part of the community and giving back. “You go to your job, you eat dinner, you volunteer your time...it should be all a part of someone’s lifestyle.” With her eye on the future, she hopes Millbrook will continue to be that school that pushes every student to become his/her best self. Her best self is still evolving, and she envisions that her future might include life on a farm, making cheese, growing hops, and continuing to work with people to provide affordable housing.

For now, she will continue to do what she can to support Millbrook by volunteering and giving to the Annual Fund. When Mark Cartland ’80 originally approached her about supporting projects on campus through an Annual Fund donation, she really didn’t understand the role the Annual Fund plays in the day-to-day operation of the school. Since then her donations have been consistent and based on what she can afford. “Some people might not donate at all if they think their donations don’t equate to great success. They need to understand that any amount counts. It is a way to show up.”

BRAM LUTTON ’91 Conservation, Community Service and Cartilaginous Creatures Bram missed his 25th reunion in June, but for good reason. In his sixth year as a summer visiting scientist and now residence life director at the Mt. Desert Island Lab near Acadia National Park, he had responsibilities he could not shirk. Bram leads a busy productive life the other ten months of the year as an associate professor at Endicott College just outside of Boston, husband to wife Lori, and father to eight-year-old daughter Lucy. His work with the many animals at the Trevor Zoo during community service correlates directly to the work that Bram does today. “When I left Millbrook, I knew that I would continue to work with animals in some way. Sharks, skates, and stingrays were my animals of choice. I was passionate about them! So I followed that passion to serve the community while working in an academic setting.” His path began at Colby College and then Boston University before beginning joint appointments as a research fellow at Mass General Hospital and Harvard Medical School. Now in his eighth year at Endicott College, his passion for teaching, research, and the animals he studies is obvious, and the spark for that passion he credits to former Science Department Chair Bruce Rinker, who was hugely influential during his time at Millbrook. Bram also credits Bruce and other faculty members including Kathy Havard, Todd Feitelson, and Jonathan Meigs, for teaching him how to study. His entrance test score (13th percentile back then!) was certainly not a good predictor of his future success, as Bram would graduate with advanced honors in the top three in his class. “Millbrook taught me confidence and communication—that if I put in the work, good would come out of it.” Having studied cartilaginous fish (sharks, skates, and stingrays) for decades now, his good work has earned him the respect of other scientists around the world who look to Bram as a shark expert. A comparative physiologist and marine biologist, he works to understand the immune and reproductive systems of these fish on an evolutionary basis. “I study them to protect the species themselves. The more we know about the species, the more we care about them and the more likely we are to protect them. There’s the conservation and community service piece I get from Millbrook. There’s also the biomedical piece of it—the research I’m doing with these animals at the cellular and molecular level gives us new knowledge about how blood vessels

Bram and Lori with daughter Lucy at Acadia National Park

grow, which is important for diabetes and cancer research, and how stem cells, like those in our bone marrow, are activated and how they function. This is important for bone marrow transplantation, cancer, and so forth.” Bram is very happy that as Millbrook has grown, it has not lost any of its “small school” community sense, and he loves seeing all of the positive news as the school’s infrastructure and opportunities for current students get ever better. “Community service, the level of support that you get from the staff and faculty, those things that made me love Millbrook haven’t changed. I think Drew has done a tremendous job, and I would love to see a continuation of the past.” Giving back is something he also learned at Millbrook, and Bram feels strongly that it is the right thing to do. “I always say that Millbrook changed my entire life. I was there for just three years, but it completely shifted the trajectory of my life. This is not hyperbole. I was either going to go one way or the other. It’s thanks to Millbrook I went the other. I think it’s necessary to give back. I want to see the school succeed. I want to see the school grow. I want young people to have the same experiences I had. I’ve dedicated my life to doing what Bruce Rinker, Del Shilkret, and all of the wonderful faculty did for me. I want other people to have that, and I want to help Millbrook make that possible.”

SYLVIA TAN ’15 Learning by Doing: Engineering and Art Sylvia came to Millbrook because of the combination of strong academic and art programs, and today she is at Washington University in St. Louis pursuing a degree in mechanical engineering with an art minor. The most decorated graduate in her class (Sylvia was awarded the Community Service Cup, Cum Laude, the Nathaniel B. Abbott Cup, the Science Prize, and the Senior Art Award for ceramics in addition to being

named a Blaine Essay Finalist), she is sure to go as far as her imagination will take her. A master’s degree in either product design or industrial engineering could be on the horizon, and the possibilities thereafter are endless. Bill Hardy, director of the Holbrook Arts Center, helped connect Sylvia with former Millbrook faculty member, alumnus, entrepreneur, and potter Jono Pandolfi ’95. Jono offered Sylvia a summer internship at his New Jersey warehouse, where he and his employees craft thousands of pieces of dinnerware every month. Soon thereafter, she was walking to work from her small rental in Union City. Growing up in Singapore, Sylvia was not able to pursue her interest in art, and Millbrook truly opened up many new doors for her. This internship provided new opportunities, as she watched Jono’s company grow and discerned what contributed to that growth and change. “I can learn how to do ceramics anywhere, but I learned more about how to apply my knowledge from the classroom to the business. I have seen Jono welcome chefs into the studio and how he talks to them about his products. I couldn’t learn all of that in a classroom.” Coming from a culture where every opportunity is appreciated, Sylvia does not want to waste any given to her here. “I want to take advantage of everything, every chance to learn, even when it is a sacrifice not to go home and see my family. I eventually want to bring my knowledge and skills back to Singapore, where these types of opportunities simply don’t exist. One reason is that there just isn’t this type of space available in Singapore!” Sylvia loved being at Millbrook during a time of great expansion and change, and looking back now, a few years out, she realizes how much Millbrook continues to means to her and how much she learned. While volunteering at a fundraiser for Washington University, she realized that when everyone donates even a little bit, great things happen. At Millbrook, she wants to be a part of the great things happening, and that’s why she gives to the Annual Fund. “My sister, Valerie, is a current student now, and I just want to stay involved and show I care!”

Annual Fund Leadership

At the heart of the Millbrook experience: our parents

Why they love Millbrook, and why they give back Kelly (Macaluso) Coles ’86, P ’19 “During my time as a student at Millbrook, I found my voice, my passions, and my lifelong friends, and I learned things, both in and out of the classroom, that have forever after guided my path and my decisions. I want my daughter to experience these meaningful life lessons just as I did, and now life comes full circle! I am so pleased that my daughter, Isobel, is joining the Millbrook community as a IVth former. We are thrilled for Issy to be a part of an environment where she is truly “known and needed,” where she can live, learn and grow, achieving her best while contributing to the greater good through stewardship and community service.” Since graduation, Kelly has supported the Annual Fund as a decade chair and class agent—she appreciates the connections these roles have allowed her to maintain with other Millbrook alumni. She was also able to see firsthand how the Annual Fund ensures that the school continues to thrive, as tuition alone cannot sustain the rich and diverse opportunities that Millbrook School offers our children and its faculty. “We are all fortunate to be a part of a school that is small “by design,” and I look forward to furthering my commitment to Millbrook as a parent volunteer and gaining the opportunity to be more closely involved.”

Karen Simons, P ’17, ’19 Karen has two current Millbrook students, and while her sons, Harry ’17 and Will ’19, are very different, she is constantly amazed by how Millbrook is the perfect school for both of them. Millbrook’s intentionally small size has not only allowed them to make meaningful connections with both the faculty and their peers, but it’s empowered them to try new things and get involved. On a stunningly beautiful campus, Millbrook is a school that engages students and teaches respect, service, and curiosity in everything they do. “I’m grateful for the solid sense of community, which truly defines Millbrook, and I volunteer at Millbrook to support the community, particularly the faculty who wear many hats to make our children’s life on campus complete. It also allows me to connect with my kids!” There is no shortage of “good causes” to support, but Karen believes that by giving to Millbrook’s Annual Fund, she is not only supporting a good cause, but she can see and experience firsthand the impact her contribution has on the entire community.

Parent Profiles Deborah Kennedy-Brown P ’01, ’04 Sons Erin ’01 and Wells ’04 had very different but highly successful Millbrook experiences, and Deborah made every effort to be a part of those experiences, taking countless trips between Ohio and Millbrook to visit. “We always felt welcome on campus—we always felt a part of things. Our boys learned so much at Millbrook that they still carry with them today: team spirit, a huge sense of family, and confidence! They were comfortable on campus, felt safe, and knew people cared for them. That allowed both to go off into the world as more confident adults.” The boys’ education at Millbrook was made possible due to partial financial aid the school offered, and since then, Deborah and her husband, Bucky, have always felt the importance of paying that forward. “If everyone gives to the Annual Fund, whatever amount they can afford, then financial aid will be available to the students who need it.” While they really knew nothing about the Annual Fund when they first enrolled, they learned quickly just how much it matters. “We hope that all parents look at their kids and their successes and see how it all began at Millbrook. Giving to the Annual Fund is a parent’s way of saying ‘thank you’.”

Jane and Bob Keiter P ’91 Daughter Erika ’91 was looking for a school where she could be known and where she would know the other students. Size was definitely a factor in the Keiters’ decision, as was the campus and its location. “We fell in love with the incredible beauty of Millbrook’s campus and the surrounding resources in the heart of the Hudson Valley. When she heard Millbrook had a zoo, that sealed the deal!” At Millbrook Erika learned to study and prioritize her work, and by working at the zoo, she learned responsibility and empathy for all living things, which she has always carried with her. The Keiters have contributed every year to the Annual Fund. “We understand the importance of the Annual Fund. It is primarily used to cover the cost of educating students that tuition does not cover. We support Millbrook because we believe strongly in the quality of the education the school provides its students. Millbrook is not only preparing each child for college, but it is a caring place that makes each child feel valued, and it is strong thanks to the continuity of the teachers and leadership.”

The Headmaster’s Challenge The Headmaster’s Challenge launched this year at the Ainsworth in New York City, kicking off what was to be the most successful Headmaster’s Challenge yet. The Headmaster’s Challenge ran throughout the month of February, and alumni from 1990-2015 competed against each other for the highest percent participation in their class while alumni from 19401989 went head-to-head to generate the greatest dollar increase within their decades. This year the classes of 1997 and 2003 won bragging rights as winners in their divisions. For the 1990s, the class of 1997 set a new participation record with an astounding 77% participation, and for the second year in a row, the class of 2003 won for the Millennials with a strong 60% participation. Our dedicated class agents generated unprecedented engagement and activity from their classes, and these ever increasing participation rates continue to be an important measure of the health of our alumni community.

ANNUAL REPORT 2015-2016 83

Development Report As you have gleaned from the preceding pages, our fundraising efforts for 2015-2016 proved to be outstanding. The Annual Fund topped $2 million for the second consecutive year, and total gifts to the school added up to more than $9 million. The Board of Trustees again led this effort, and our thanks begins with them but extends to the more than 1,700 alumni, parents, parents of alumni, grandparents, and friends who generously and enthusiastically supported Millbrook. Our alumni (40%) and parent (90%) participation percentages have steadily increased in recent years to the point where we are now approaching the highest rungs on the independent school ladder against this important indicator. Several challenge grants were offered anonymously for both capital and annual fundraising, and they were not only met but were surpassed this year. The Headmaster’s Challenge again proved to be a resounding success, with the kick-off event taking place in Manhattan and generously underwritten by two young graduates. The sixth form parents joined together to name the new amphitheater in front of West Hall in honor of the Class of 2016, and the new dining hall opened in May on budget and ahead of schedule so that sixth formers and their parents were able to gather in this spectacular space during Commencement. Alumni, too, enjoyed lunch and dinner in the new facility during Reunion Weekend in June. Much remains to be accomplished in the year ahead as we approach the finish line of the capital campaign. Raising endowment funds is our top priority at this point. We welcome your continued support and leadership as, together, we build an ever stronger and healthier Millbrook to serve current and future generations.
