ANNUAL REPORT 2016-2017 1

Dear Members of the Millbrook Family, As we close the books on another record setting Annual Fund, I take this opportunity to thank you on behalf of my Board of Trustees colleagues for your generous support. Your financial support is essential to the programs that make Millbrook, Millbrook, and all that we do is measured against the standard of whether it will improve the educational experience of Millbrook’s students and better prepare them to grow into healthy, happy, and productive citizens who will live lives of meaning and consequence. Thus, the annual and capital funds raised in 2016-2017 allowed for progress in so many areas of school life. We have continued to upgrade and improve the spaces in which students live and learn, in our outdoor classrooms at the farm and the wetlands of south campus and at The Mill, which will become a central meeting place for our sustainability groups and will so beautifully introduce 35,000 annual visitors to our school and to our zoo. We also completed our new maintenance facility, providing the first true home for our physical plant and the men and women who work tirelessly to make the school’s campus beautiful and safe. We continued our efforts to attract, retain, and reward a strong and dedicated faculty by redoubling our commitment to the Faculty Covenant, a comprehensive program to increase faculty compensation, benefits, and training, and opening six new faculty housing units this summer. We are committed to the men and women who dedicate their lives to educating our students. For years our school has accomplished so much with so little. But in order to sustain our programs, maintain our campus, and increase the aid we provide to deserving families, we have to significantly increase our endowment. For that reason we are thrilled that Robert and Dilek Koenigsberger have committed $4 million to an endowment challenge that, when successful, will add $20 million to our endowment, a

significant increase over current levels. The income drawn from that endowment will help us fund our priorities and provide financial stability and sustainability in a challenging, competitive landscape. The pace and scope of change that I have seen our institution experience over the past two decades is nothing short of breathtaking. We have not only successfully navigated market, demographic, and financial challenges over that period, but we have prospered and advanced our school because of the unparalleled leadership of our headmaster, Drew Casertano, and the partnership he has forged with each of you, his dedicated faculty and staff, and my trustee colleagues. We thank Drew for his energy, commitment, and leadership, and we thank you for your financial support, partnership, and pride in Millbrook’s essential past and bright future. With many thanks and every good wish,

William L. Menard ’78 Chairman of the Board of Trustees

ALUMNI WEEKEND 2017

A Return to Life on the Quad More than 200 alumni from 25 reunion classes traveled back down School Road this June. Whether gathering in the Flagler Quad on the chapel steps, walking to the marshes, playing on the athletic fields, or touring the renovated Mill before visiting the Trevor Zoo, all in attendance enjoyed reliving their high school days with friends and faculty.

The Class of 1967 had a stellar turnout for their 50th reunion and took time to not only reminisce but to actively explore the Millbrook of today. In an intimate gathering with Headmaster Drew Casertano in the Chelsea Morrison Theater, they discussed the progress of the school, the programs that continue the Millbrook tradition of excellence, and the people who bring those experiences to life for today’s students. On June 10th all alumni joined in the festivities, which included master classes, tours of the Trevor Zoo, soccer on the turf field, and wine tasting with local Millbrook Vineyards Winery.

2017 Alumni Weekend

That afternoon the class of 2007 and friends from other classes came together in a very special tribute to Taylor Vit ’07, who died tragically in a car accident several years ago. Mr. and Mrs. Vit reconnected with so many of Taylor’s friends before all took to the softball field for a friendly, albeit competitive, game. Softball and soccer players, wine enthusiasts, and all others joined the traditional alumni parade into the Flagler Memorial Chapel, and Robert Anthony ’65 welcomed everyone before presenting special awards to very deserving recipients. The Edward Pulling Community Service Award was presented to Eric G. Kocher ’65, and Millbrook Medals were presented to Caroline A. Wamsler, PhD ’87 and William R. Hettinger ’77.

Cum Laude Book Signing (Left) Class of 2007 Cum Laude inductees John Dubaz, Charlotte Pfeffer, and Maren Rhodin with Drew Casertano. (Right) Father and son, John Dubaz ’76 and John Dubaz ’07, were welcomed by Drew Casertano before signing the Cum Laude book in Schoolhouse.

Headmaster Casertano delivered the State of the School address to update alumni on the many projects underway and recently completed on campus. This included an update on the spectacular new dining hall, the completion of renovations to The Mill, the construction of a new maintenance facility, and the start of renovations to Case Hall. On the heels of much positive news about the health and development of the school, alumni enjoyed gathering in Millbrook’s newest renovated space, Prum Meeting Hall, which has come a long way from its dining hall days. All made an easy transition to dining and dancing, the latter which lasted well into the wee hours of the morning.

ALUMNI Awards Three special awards were handed out to deserving Millbrook alumni on Saturday, June 10th. Following are excerpts from the citations, written and presented by Bob Anthony ’65

THE MILLBROOK MEDAL Caroline A. Wamsler, PhD ’87 was awarded a Millbrook Medal for her distinguished service to Millbrook as a true partner in Millbrook’s progress. Back in 1984, Caroline took a courageous leap of faith when she decided to leave Germany and cross the ocean to attend boarding school in America. She set out on her journey with a positive attitude and fierce determination, which led her from

Millbrook to Wellesley College. In NYC Caroline worked in the Education Department of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, which inspired her to continue her studies at Columbia University and to earn her PhD in art history with a special focus

on the Italian Renaissance. Caroline is a self-made teacher, professor, and independent scholar. She currently lectures at Columbia University, and she has also lectured at Vassar, Bard, and Wesleyan. During her spare time, she has also found time for independent writing and publishing. Since her election to Millbrook’s Board of Trustees in 2010, Caroline has stepped forward to lead at every turn. She feels strongly about the importance of diversity. In fact, it was chiefly due to her persistent efforts in working with our faculty and fellow trustees that Millbrook has a well-crafted diversity statement that appears prominently in our publications and is a living document to guide our behavior and policies. Caroline was instrumental in working on and advocating for The Covenant with our faculty, which has helped to enhance and support the experience of our faculty members through additional and adequate housing, increased health care benefits, improving salaries, and a shared vision to care for and support our dedicated professionals. She cares deeply about teachers, and Millbrook School is a better place because of her dedication and vision.

THE MILLBROOK MEDAL Bill Hettinger ’77 was awarded a Millbrook Medal for his long and devoted service to our school and to so many in this community. Bill Hettinger was a quiet and thoughtful adolescent when he was a Millbrook student, and he went on to Trinity College where he earned his bachelor’s degree in 1981. In the early 80s he and another Millbrook classmate started a small computer business in Pawling, NY, close by the

Hettinger homestead. During a visit to Europe, Bill met his wife, Corinna, and they returned to the states to set down roots and start a family, having two children, Caroline Foss ’01 and Charlie Hettinger ’04. Their journey has taken them from Pawling to Key West, where they started and ran a

resort hotel and an airline, then up to Boston and more recently to Tampa, where he and Charlie have formed a company that makes specialized wristwatches for airplane pilots. Following in his father’s footsteps, Bill joined Millbrook’s board in 1986. He served as an active trustee for thirty years, and a year ago was elected an honorary trustee. Without any fanfare, but with their wisdom, vision, and absolute devotion to Millbrook and the Trevor Zoo and their inherent belief in the school and the zoo’s potential, Bill and his parents set out to transform the zoo. They encouraged then Zoo Director Jono Meigs to dream big and to develop a plan that would put the zoo on the map and would complement the good work that was taking place across School Road on our main campus. The Trevor Zoo today is a facility that is a tremendous asset to our educational program, and the zoo has been a model for later projects along School Road: the renovation of Abbott Hall, the construction of the Hamilton Math and Science Center, the green parking lot, the Murphy Bridge, and now the complete renovation of The Mill, the zoo’s new front door through which 35,000 visitors will make their way each year. Bill’s board service included his wise counsel as a member of the Executive Committee and his calm and steady perspective and demeanor around the board table. We all try to teach our students and our children to leave a place in better condition than we found it. Thanks to his grandparents and parents, Bill Hettinger learned that lesson a long time ago, and he continues to share it with Millbrook.

Special Awards Edward Pulling Community Service Award ERIC g. Kocher ’65 For Eric’s selfless service and good works on behalf of our citizens at home and those in need abroad, we were honored to present him with this special award. Eric was born in Brussels, and he arrived at Millbrook in 1961 from Amman, Jordan. He earned a B.A. in political science from American University in 1969 and his law degree from Boston College Law School in 1972. It was in our nation’s capital where Eric developed an interest in politics, and he juggled his college work with political responsibilities on two Kennedy family campaigns before signing up for the Washington, DC National Guard. After passing the bar exam in Georgia, his first job was with Georgia Legal Services representing the poor in a 17-county area. Eric established a branch office on the Georgia coast, and a two-year commitment turned into more than four decades of service. After starting a legal aid program, Eric set up a pilot Public Defender Office in Georgia, and he became the first director of the State Bar of Georgia’s Pro-Bono Program. In five years Eric established a fund in support of death penalty defense and mental health advocacy. Eric’s role was crucial in handling death penalty and other serious criminal cases and in providing advocacy on behalf of the dispossessed and the poor. More recently, Eric established and served as the legal director of the Law Center for the Homeless in the state. In the last several years, Eric traveled to the Greek island of Lesbos, where he helped refugees as they arrived on rafts from Turkey as part of the vast migration of refugees from all over the middle east who are trying to get to Europe. This spring, Eric went to Iraq where he worked outside of Mosul helping refugees to escape the ISIS occupation. Many of them were attacked or shot at by ISIS as they escaped. With other volunteers, Eric was involved in setting up a medical center about 30 miles from Mosul, where the battle rages on today.

Commencement 2017 In a celebration of growth, success, community, and tradition, hundreds of friends and family joined us on the Flagler Quad during the final weekend in May for Millbrook’s 2017 commencement activities. Festivities began on Saturday evening, as VIth formers, their parents, and advisors enjoyed the traditional Senior Dinner in our new dining hall. The grand 23-foot ceilings, traditional aesthetic, and floor-to-ceiling windows, provided a spectacular backdrop against which we celebrated our graduates. Prize Night followed under the main tent on the Flagler Quad, and underformers and faculty joined family and friends to recognize VIth form outstanding achievement in all areas of school life. The Millbrook community gathered on Sunday, May 28th, to celebrate the Class of 2017. Carolina A. Wamsler, PhD ’87, Millbrook board member and alumna, welcomed all and delivered a heartfelt address born of her experiences both as a student and board member; her deep affection for the school came shining through. Jean-Pierre Conte, father of William Conte ’17, delivered the Commencement Address, which was rich in advice for our new graduates. “You only grow when you are uncomfortable,” said Mr. Conte, who encouraged students to take risks and stay humble. The VIth formers elected classmate Benjamin Berg to deliver this year’s VIth Form Commencement Address. A day student, Ben reflected on his time at Millbrook and the people who shaped his Millbrook experience. “Although Millbrook is not my house, it is still my home. Home is not where you sleep, home is where your heart is. And I know that my heart will be at Millbrook for a very long time…Millbrook sets a standard of community that has made me redefine what it means to be a true friend. I doubt I’ll ever be a part of another community as strong as Millbrook’s, but it’s what I’ll always strive for… What makes Millbrook Millbrook, to me—it has always been the people.” Headmaster Drew Casertano presented Millbrook’s special commencement prizes: the Sportsmanship Cup to Olivia May and the Community Service Cup to Thomas Denney, Olivia May, and Valerie Tan. Valerie Tan also earned the highest academic achievement, Summa Cum Laude.

Valerie Tan College attending: University of Southern California Major: Film Special Recognition: Summa Cum Laude, Cum Laude, Community Service Cup, Frank W. Trevor Cup, Nathaniel B. Abbott Cup During her three years at Millbrook, Valerie perfected the art of time management as an extremely productive member of the community. She was, literally, everywhere on campus! When she wasn’t in her art studio space creating a life-sized self-portrait for her CES, you might find her in the tech booth planning lighting for a performance, at the zoo analyzing data for her Independent Science Research class, or in a classroom in the Kenan Language Center working with her peers as a student tutor. As much as she was a truly academic student, Summa Cum Laude in her class, Val was equally adept as a creative artist. With access to a bounty of resources and introductions to new mediums made possible by Mr. Hardy, Valerie explored drawing, painting, art history, and more. She chose to join one of the top film programs in the country at USC, and with access to leading professionals in the field and industry standard equipment, the possibilities of what she will be able to create are limitless.

Will Conte College attending: Princeton Major: Political science with minor in environmental studies Commencement awards: Cum Laude, Clark Language Prize Will worked closely with Millbrook faculty in planning for and growing Millbrook’s farm over the past four years, and he takes great pride in having helped transform the grassy landscape on the north campus into the well-organized, beautiful, and bountiful agricultural space that it is today. Focusing on sustainability initiatives that could be carried on by other students, Will brought bees to campus, helped establish the new colonies, and created a program that will continue to provide honey for the dining hall indefinitely. His ambitions led him to Princeton, where he plans to major in political science or philosophy and minor in “an inspiring environmental science program. He feels perfectly prepared for new challenges, empowered with critical writing skills honed by master teachers like Mr. Zeiser. Will is ready to advocate for what he is passionate about, and he hopes to leave other important legacies beyond Millbrook.

Senior Profiles

Lucinda Mills College attending: Trinity College, Dublin Major: Mathematics and economics Special Recognition: Cum Laude, Sykes Mathematics Prize Perfectly focused is how many would describe Lucinda on horseback. She rides with poise and grace, while being calculated and confident. It is no surprise that she is headed to college with a plan and a major in mind. At Trinity College in Dublin she will be able to specialize early and focus on her favorite subjects, economics and mathematics. Her college choice was made easier by the fact that while in Ireland she will be able to spend more time with her extended family and her horses. Although being far from her home in Florida will present certain challenges, Lucinda credits Millbrook for making her a more selfassured, independent, and critical thinker, so she feels prepared for university and beyond.

Commencement 2016 2017

Tahrieq Koonce College attending: Case Western Reserve Major: Aerospace engineering Special Recognition: Ceramics Award As captain of Millbrook’s inaugural 8-man football team in the fall of 2016, Tahrieq logged such an impressive season he was named Defensive MVP. His performance on the field further landed him a spot as an inside linebacker on Case Western Reserve’s football team. Tahrieq loves football, but he is even more excited about the opportunities he will be able to pursue in their aerospace engineering program. He’ll surely take advantage of every other opportunity to get involved, because that is his nature. As a four-year student at Millbrook, Tahrieq was an integral part of every facet of school life. He was an avid potter and built a portable pottery kick wheel so he could explore his creativity wherever he was inspired. Wanting to move out of his comfort zone, he spent his Vth form year studying in China and becoming fluent in Mandarin. Yet his presence on the Millbrook campus resonated so strongly that faculty awarded Tahrieq the Founders’ Prize that year and chose him as a dorm leader upon his return. We have no doubt that Tahrieq will remain a leader with a big heart (and a big smile) as he puts 110% into all of his college experiences.

Olivia May College attending: College of William & Mary Major: Undecided Special Recognition: Cum Laude, Community Service Cup, Sportsmanship Cup, Sykes Mathematics Prize, Four Year Varsity Letter Winner There is a reason that Olivia has the nickname “Smiley.” Whether on the quad with friends, in the classroom or on the playing field, she was always grinning. Her constant positivity and determination landed her the role of captain on each of the three varsity sports she played her VIth form year. She led her teams with grace and taught her teammates how to lose with dignity. Her can-do attitude did not go unnoticed, as Millbrook’s coaches awarded Olivia the 2017 Sportsmanship Cup. Her focus and persistence on the field and in the classroom earned her a spot at the College of William and Mary. Though she is undecided and her path isn’t exactly clear yet, whatever she chooses she is sure to do it with a smile on her face.

For Harry, many of these qualities seem innate. Living with IIIrd formers in Harris Hall, Harry led by example, and as comfortable as he was working with Millbrook’s youngest students, he was equally adept at conversing with faculty and administrators. Fascinated with politics as a child and further inspired by his Constitutional Law elective, he is ready to dig deeper into the inner workings of government in his studies at Bucknell. Much like Millbrook, Bucknell offers more intimate class sizes and a sense of community— a place where he can continue to make lasting connections and, given the right opportunities, a place to lead.

Samantha Cole College attending: Cornell Major: Engineering Special Recognition: Cum Laude, Science Prize, Sykes Mathematics Prize As a winner of both the Sykes Mathematics Prize and the Science Prize, Sam is no stranger to the math and science classrooms, and Cornell was her perfect school match. The state of the art labs and handson approach intrigued her, and Sam felt perfectly prepared for the challenges ahead at this Ivy League school. Making her decision easier was the fact that Cornell has a riding team, and she will be able to board her own horses there. She attributes her growth in self-confidence and “finding her own voice” to her Millbrook experience, and it will be exciting to follow her growth at the next level and beyond.

Owen Kelley College attending: Rhodes College Major: Political economy Special Recognition: Class of 1978 Award Moving out of his comfort zone, trying new things, and never questioning decisions based on what others thought of him—these are the lessons Owen learned during his four years at Millbrook. This explains why he was able to pivot 180 degrees his Vth form year, stepping away from hockey to land a leading role in the school musical. Owen takes that same level of confidence and curiosity with him to Rhodes College in Memphis, Tennessee, where he intends to fully involve himself in the things he loves. He is eager to explore a school in an urban environment and programs that place familiar emphasis on community and service. Owen hopes to make the same types of connections and lasting relationships with his peers and professors that he was able to develop at Millbrook; specifically, he hopes to find a teacher, like Mrs. Clizbe, who will embrace his colorful personality and curiosity.

A Signature Academic Program In a yearlong exploration of topics/interests/passions, our VIth formers learn how to develop an essential question to explore, research, and plan their final product, before practicing and then delivering their presentation to their peers and the Millbrook faculty. This mentored experience results in projects formed around each student’s unique interests, and whether the project generates a physical object, an ephemeral experience, a scholarly paper, or something else altogether, it is a testament to the student’s growth at Millbrook. The following summaries represent the very best CES projects in 2017—independent research and subsequent presentations on the grand ideas that germinated and blossomed as a result of their experiences at Millbrook.

Skye Casiano

A Look into Narnia Skye took on the gargantuan task of organizing the costume room in the Holbrook Arts Center by period pieces. As a stage manager for several Millbrook productions, she spent a lot of time in this room and quickly realized how difficult it was to find needed wardrobe pieces and props. Thanks to Skye, there is a new and ongoing organizing system check for all wardrobe pieces and props that allows users to efficiently check out and in what they need.

Samantha Cole & Jason Lei

The First Annual Millbrook Physics Olympics Sam and Jason relished the opportunity to represent Millbrook in Yale’s annual Physics Olympics. Sharing a passion for science, they both agreed that Millbrook would be an optimal site to host a similar science competition. Thus, Millbrook’s 1st Annual Physics Olympics was born, and Sam and Jason discovered the incredible amount of attention to detail and planning involved in creating a successful event.

Tommy Colman

Do You Even Bench? Tommy credits Millbrook with helping him to develop his appreciation for nature and service, and this inspired him to create a bench for the campus community to enjoy. The sturdy and inviting seat took Tommy approximately 20 hours to create and required him to research both carpentry and wood types so that the final product would be resilient and match the visual aesthetic of the school. Sitting on Ski Hill, the donated bench welcomes others to deepen their appreciation of nature just as Tommy did during his time at Millbrook, as it offers one of the most beautiful views of our campus landscape.

Will Conte

The Power of Bees During his four years on campus, Will was highly involved in sustainability initiatives and the establishment and growth of Millbrook’s farm. Thus, his CES tied together his passion for the environment and his hopes to grow sustainable programs at Millbrook. One program is the establishment of bee colonies with several goals: to protect and promote the power of bees, to understand the role that bees play in our ecosystem, and to cultivate our own honey on campus. He has left current students and faculty a “sweet” legacy - and more than 30,000 active buzzing bees!

Sophia Denney

Nudes By creating large-scale pastel drawings of the human anatomy in the context of athleticism, Sophia was able to reflect on her Millbrook experience through art. A fitness enthusiast and varsity soccer player for all three of her years at Millbrook, Sophia challenged herself to create meaningful art and to foster discussion around arts and athletics at Millbrook. “One of the unique things about Millbrook is that you don’t have to be pigeonholed into one activity. You can be both an artist and an athlete.” As she had never sketched the human body at such a large scale or with the pastels she chose to use, her CES process involved many hours of sketching and observation and plenty of trial and error. The final works are colorful and captivating and speak to her personal experience at Millbrook and the school’s commitment to helping students develop their best selves.

How Photography Saved My Life Grayce’s project emanated from her childhood experiences and tragedy following the death of her adopted mother. She explored her childhood emotions through her favorite medium, photography, creating an installation depicting other people and those emotions she finds universal. Her hope: that viewers would recognize these same emotions in themselves. Hers was a brave project, and Grayce told her story beautifully while presenting a wide variety of photographic techniques, digital processes that were very technically proficient, in a mixture of black and white and color.

Emma Jaeger

Manners Born into a family of artists, Emma found herself completely at home in the Holbrook Arts Center. Thus, her culminating project tied into her love of photography, fashion, and design, and her Manners magazine was born. She spent months planning, interviewing, writing, and recruiting contributors before she began the arduous process of laying the magazine out in a professional editing program, choosing cover and interior photos, selecting fonts, and designing a masthead. It all came together beautifully in a 28-page magazine that perfectly represented the collaborative spirit of this talented Millbrook artist.

Jennifer Hughes

Connecting Two Worlds When Jen partnered with other students to volunteer at a literacy organization during Intersession her IVth and Vth form years, she was surprised by the high statistics of illiterate and functionally illiterate adults and children, both globally and right here in Dutchess County, NY. She immediately recognized the importance of this work and the power of literacy to break the cycles of poverty, poor health, and incarceration, and Jen pursued a regular and ongoing connection with a literacy group in Pawling. Her CES was naturally born from this passion for teaching and truly making a difference, and she created three beautiful ceramic globes to represent her experiences and the people she worked to help. Quotes from her students covered the globes and gave insight into what the reading sessions meant to them: “My motivation and my inspiration are my children.” “In English class there are people from all over the world – Mexico, Guatemala, Spain—and they all have different stories. But we are all here to learn.”

Lucy Loper

Invisible Cities: A One Act Lucy wrote her one-act play inspired by the works of three well known writers - Waiser, Calvino, and Kafka - and their connections to each other. Students performed her play in a modern-day setting - Lucy directed. Lucy was highly active in the theater during her three years at Millbrook, performing in both the fall play and winter musical all three years.

Victor Lou

The Preying Praying Mantis Victor was one of only six students who participated in Millbrook’s intensive Independent Science Research course, a unique offering for VIth formers that allows students to develop and implement their own scientific research throughout the academic year. Studying the strike rates of the praying mantis, he easily rolled these creatures into his CES and created a unique photography installation of the praying mantises. This project was culminating for Victor because it allowed him to share his passion for the sciences, which was central to his Millbrook experience. Victor conducted his research at the Trevor Zoo, where he raised and studied the Praying Mantis, and the Zoo hopes to keep the insects on display permanently for all to enjoy.

Lucinda Mills

Jump! At Millbrook there are vast landscapes of rolling hills, open spaces, and equine estates, which provides unique opportunities for student activities and for horseback riding, in particular. Riding has always been a passion for Lucinda, and Millbrook’s equestrian program was a central component of her high school experience. It was therefore fitting for Lucinda to create a horse jump for her CES project. Lucinda spent hours gathering supplies, testing designs, and building the sturdy structure, which she donated to the Millbrook community—a challenge that paid off with a structure current and future Millbrook riders will use.

Ael Pagny

Familiar Faces The monochrome tones of faces bleed through the dripping and dotted spots of developer. The subject’s face is veiled by white streaks or dots, strategically revealing a specific facial feature or expression. These are Ael’s photographs, and to say they are unique and thought provoking is an understatement. Inspired by the work of Timothy Pakron, Ael wanted to challenge herself creatively while expressing her colorful upbringing. She chose subjects that she felt best represented her cultural associations and used an alternative process to develop only certain portions of the photographs. The result is a series that is a truthful and insightful peek into Ael’s character, personality, and identity.

Tara Peckham

Submersion Tara developed her passion for photography at Millbrook and became interested in the concept of submersing oneself in the environment to create art in her honors studio course with Bill Hardy. As a part of that course, students studied how humanity is one with nature and explored this intimate relationship through art. For her CES project Tara chose to further pursue this concept, and created a photography exhibit of people that she decorated within nature. For each of her subjects, which included herself, Tara used the human body as a canvas, and created intricate and sometimes 3D art onto their bodies before photographing them in the environment that inspired her. “This was culminating for me because art was so central to my Millbrook experience,” says Tara. The final works displayed the natural elements that inspired her and that she felt most connected to within campus, as well as her many artistic talents.

Harry Simons

Millbrook, Millbrook With his father, Paul Simons ’83, being an alumnus and Millbrook School board member, Harry and his family have deep roots with our institution and a passion for the school’s history and thoughtful growth. This combined with his passion for photography is what inspired him to create a book that tells the Millbrook story through the words and images of our longest tenured faculty members. The final product, a beautiful hardcover book, is available in our library for our community to enjoy for years to come.

Sihyun Wei

Let’s Get in Formation When Si came to Millbrook she found a passion for arts that she didn’t know she had. In her IVth form year she started dancing and quickly found that much of her free time was being spent in the dance studio. Using techniques she learned throughout the years, she directed her classmates in a small hip hop dance troupe. Si navigated the logistics of scheduling, rehearsals, choreography, costuming, and technical elements including lights, sounds and music. She forged ahead on her project for the entirety of the year, performing a total of five fully designed dance works between Arts Nights performances and her CES presentation. The routines were a beautiful expression of Si’s understanding and dedication to her craft and demonstrated her growth and confidence as an artist.

Exploring Movement from Behind a Lens Emily combined her love of photography and dance, doing a photo shoot in the dance studio. She took photos of professional dancers from the D’amby Project. She tried different techniques including the use of a powder. She had to overcome scheduling problems, camera issues, and more, but in the end she produced a series of photographs that captured movement in stunning reproductions.

Blaine Presentations The Blaine essay prize is awarded each year to a graduating senior who offers the best essay concerning an issue of contemporary or historical significance. It is presented in memory of Harrison Tweed Blaine ‘38, a United States Marine who died during World War II. Established by Mr. Blaine’s parents, it was originally awarded through the mid-1960’s and was reinstated in 1982. The following seniors were recognized for their outstanding work in their Blaine essays, presented to the school via the CES Festival.

Eli Bannett Mas Suicide in the United States Eli argued that the comparatively high suicide rate in the US is a function of materialistic and self-centered cultural values.

Jack Buchholz Subsidized Homeownership Jack argued that federal housing subsidies not only do not promote “The American Dream,” but hinder it by promoting unsustainable practices and preventing social mobility.

Brenna Connolly Is Burning the American Flag Patriotic? Brenna argued that flag burning not only should not be banned, but is an act of patriotism. The issue is settled as a matter of law, because

the Supreme Court ruled 20 years ago that desecration of the flag was protected under the 1st Amendment, but it’s still controversial. When challenged by members of her audience, Brenna asserted her points respectfully, confident in her knowledge of the facts and details.

Olivia May Heritage of Hate: What Does the Confederate Flag Really Stand For? Olivia researched on two conflicting arguments related to the confederate flag and concluded that the flag is a symbol for racism and hatred rather than a nod to Southern pride. Having a keen interest in issues related to human rights, she chose this subject and found no lack of supporting documentation in her research, only strong opinions on either side. She ultimately made her conclusions due to the confederate flag’s strong historical ties to slavery, racism, and white supremacy and the psychological effects it has on members of society still today.

SERVICE LEARNING –

Millbrook’s Summer Internship Program Eight Millbrook students participated in this year’s “Serving the Community Summer Internship Program,” an initiative started in 2016 through the generosity of alumnus Herb Shultz ’63. The program offers financial support to students who have an interest in working for a non-profit organization during the summer months. This summer students pursued a wide variety of interests at various locations, including working with Habitat for Humanity, Street Squash NYC, Children’s Museum of the Arts, Koinonia Primary Care, Hudson River Housing, the Cary Institute, Central Square Theater, and even Millbrook’s very own Trevor Zoo. These experiences allowed students to give of themselves while they gained valuable professional experience.

Rjay Brent ’18 chose StreetSquash because he had benefited from their programing prior to coming to Millbrook and felt the internship opportunity allowed him to combine his passion for the sport and helping youth. Like some of his peers, he would not have been able to participate without the support of Millbrook, as, until this summer, StreetSquash’s internship program has been open solely to college students.

“My internship at StreetSquash forced me out of my comfort zone. I found myself taking more risks that paid off not only in how they impacted the program, but also because they shaped my professional judgement.”

Kaitlyn Pike ’18 chose to pursue an internship that aligned with her passion for science, her career goals in medicine, and Millbrook’s motto of Non Sibi Sed Cunctis. At Koinonia Primary Care in Albany, NY, she organized medical records, made phone calls, facilitated patient orientations, and asked questions of the medical students with whom she worked.

“Millbrook’s program connected me to the right internship, which allowed me to have a meaningful experience, give back to my community, and connect with resources in the medical field.”

David Nesterov-Rappoport ‘18 got creative at the Children’s Museum of the Arts in NYC, while Kevin Drevitch ‘18 tackled event management and social media for Habitat for Humanity in Warren, NJ

All students who participated shared details of their summer experiences in an all-school chapel talk this October.

RIDING: There are so many unique benefits of participating in Millbrook’s riding program, beginning with the vast beautiful landscapes of rolling hills, open spaces, and equine estates that surround campus.

44

Millbrook School

Students who choose riding as their athletic alternative all agree: the setting is gorgeous, the riders and instructors are experienced, and the program is strong. The riding program has evolved significantly over the last eight years with support from neighboring Kildare Stables and Coole Park. Students practice during athletic time blocks throughout the week with staff dedicated to high-level instruction. Students always have the option of working with trainers at other local stables, and access to multiple facilities allows the program to be tailored to the individual needs of each rider and to their horses, should they choose to board them locally. Trainers at Kildare and Coole Parke push students to “ride to their ability,” with the goal of having them master cross country riding and jumping, and most Millbrook riders show year-round and earn accolades during the summer months. Sloan Pierpont ’18 placed 9th out of 50 at the NAJYRC this summer and earned 1st place in the junior competition at the 2017 Bromont CCI. Ava Humphrey ’19 won blue ribbon over fences in her first jumper class and reserved champion in the equitation classes in Kentucky this summer, and she also participated in the CHJA finals, where she received first over fences and third overall out of over 80 riders. Millbrook is proud to offer a robust program built upon the deep-rooted equestrian history of the region. We are also proud to recognize Director of Advancement Nancy Stahl, joint master of the Millbrook Hunt. Nancy and her husband, Bill, are the winners of The 2017 Fitch’s Corner Award for their leadership in the sport of foxhunting; they have welcomed Millbrook’s riders to join them on a hunt and see firsthand the great traditions of this sport.

Facilities

North Campus Dining Hall Courtyard, Farm, Maintenance With the completion over the summer of the new maintenance facility, landscaping of the interior courtyard of the dining hall, and continuing expansion of the farm, Millbrook’s north campus is more beautiful—and more productive—than ever. For the first time in the school’s history, the physical plant staff have a true home, a space designed specifically to meet their needs. Our maintenance crew is appreciating the efficiencies generated by having all staff under one roof, but all who live on campus will benefit. Just next door, the dining hall courtyard is now dressed with red brick walkways, lush grass, and young trees, and the farm, with growing crops of tomatoes, onions, potatoes, and more, is now enclosed with a deer fence to protect what many students and faculty have labored to grow. What was once a space filled with empty pastures and parking spaces, North Campus is now a favorite destination.

Facilities

The Mill The renovation of the Mill is noteworthy for many reasons. An historic space and the oldest building on campus, it was home to the arts and community service programs for decades. As plans to restore this building began to develop, it made sense to involve members of the Millbrook community who could help secure the important history that is contained within its walls. Thus, Jono Meigs ’65, 40+ year zoo director, got the ball rolling with Larry Neufeld ’67, whose dad, Woldemar, taught art in the Mill so many years ago. John Allee ’86, P ’19 took on the project as architect, working with Charlotte Carroll-Tracy ’88, a current trustee, who added her retail experience and design eye to this project. Dan Cohen ’86 helped integrate new technology and leverage the space for many different purposes, and Bob Sanford ’77, CP ’16 and Chris Hatfield P ’18, ’21 also contributed supplies, materials, and support. Zoo Director Dr. Alan Tousignant has been involved every step of the way; he takes special pride in partnering with Millbrook alumnus Julian Strauss ’54 to mill a Slippery Elm tree across the stream that was at the end of its life. It has now taken on a new life—both as the outside deck and also as the main desk in the welcome area. With more than 35,000 visitors expected to come through the Mill (as the new entrance to the Trevor Zoo), this renovated space will allow us to better educate visitors about the school, the zoo, and the importance of environmental stewardship. It will also provide immense opportunities for current students who interests range from zoology to conservation to marketing and sales of local and sustainable goods.

Faculty Housing Millbrook’s board of trustees is committed to attracting and retaining the most talented and qualified faculty and intentionally developing a school culture that is supportive of faculty in a variety of ways. In support of these goals is the Covenant with Faculty, which includes appropriate and quality housing. Thus, the trustees allocated $3,000,000 for three new townhouses with six faculty apartments, and these were completed in the early summer months. Situated on the west end of campus on Fraleigh Hill Road, the beautiful new 2-bedroom homes offer privacy in a tranquil setting, just a short walk to the main campus.

Faculty Milestones: Cindy McWilliams

40 years 40 years have passed in a wink, it seems. Cindy has contributed a great deal to the school since 1977. She was initially the linchpin in the Admissions Office before assuming the role of Director of Admissions in the 1990s. She has met thousands of potential applicants and has ushered many of them into the Millbrook family. She has maintained her relationship with countless students, former advisees, faculty, alumni, and parents over the years, and she continues her work today as a member of the Alumni and Development team. The mother of two Millbrook graduates, Trevor ’01 and Carly ’05, Cindy has also been a surrogate mom to her advisees and to Rick’s soccer players over the years. She is a soccer mom to the Nth degree and has attended almost as many games as her husband has coached. Millbrook has been very fortunate that Cindy has been a member of our school community for four decades.

Gordie MacKenzie

30 years Gordie MacKenzie first made his way to Millbrook’s faculty as a soccer coach and biology teacher in 1987. Fast-forward thirty years, and Coach Mack is at the center of both science study and school culture at Millbrook. He taught biology to IIIrd formers for many years and played an integral role in the reimagining and resequencing of our science curriculum; he now teaches biology as the capstone science for our Vth formers. Gordie also continues to teach a number of science electives including discovery in science, anatomy and physiology, and forensics. In class, Gordie is clear, demanding, and funny, and he loves keeping his students on their toes—including literally, by taking them deep into Millbrook’s marsh on a regular basis. An advocate for place-based scientific study, Gordie has recently partnered with the Island School in Eleuthera to lead summer trips for Millbrook students to work with the Eleuthera Institute’s marine research scientists. Outside the classroom, Gordie has been head coach of the girls varsity soccer program for thirty years and has coached boys lacrosse at all levels. For eighteen years, he was a resident of Case Hall, leading the big red to more Winter Weekend victories than any dorm parent in Millbrook history. Gordie is the proud parent of two Millbrook alumnae, including Cora ’12 and Cate ’15. Cora now also serves on Millbrook’s faculty as the school’s athletic trainer. Colleagues have enormous respect for Gordie’s work ethic, groundedness, and genuinely collaborative nature.

Ann Matthews

20 years Ann Matthews joined Millbrook’s faculty in 1997 and has ably served as the school’s counselor for the past twenty years. She has been instrumental in beginning and evolving key programs to foster health and wellness in this community—programs we now consider essential to what makes Millbrook, Millbrook. For example, Ann helped to conceive the Community Concerns program at a critical time in the school’s history. She established a vibrant peer counseling program through which Vth and VIth formers chosen for the role receive extensive training in how to provide compassionate, healthy guidance to their peers. Under Ann’s guidance, these peer counselors now teach our yearlong Human Development course to IVth formers. Ann has worked tirelessly with colleagues to shape the Human Development program itself and to evolve its curriculum as issues and community needs have arisen. Everyone in the community—from the most homesick IIIrd former to the headmaster, from students to teachers to parents—relies on Ann’s clear, compassionate judgement, wisdom, and funny, life-affirming perspective about how to preserve and foster our mental and emotional health in the good work we do together.

Jarratt Clarke

10 years Jarratt Clarke joined the English faculty at Millbrook after several years of teaching and coaching at Virginia Episcopal School. Ms. Clarke is a selfproclaimed introvert and book nerd who has become one of our most effective advocates for, and cultivators of, quiet leaders on campus. Her self-deprecating emails and hilarious one-liners are legendary among students and colleagues alike. Ms. Clarke begins her Vth form honors American Literature classes every day with a period of extended quiet reflection on the previous night’s reading of The Scarlet Letter or The Great Gatsby, after which student discussion bursts forth and often continues throughout the period. For the past seven years, Jarratt has been the academic dean for the Vth and VIth forms and has implemented Millbrook’s academic honesty policy with clarity, consistency, and integrity. Jarratt has also been a steadfast dorm parent in Abbott (go orange), has served as head coach of the girls varsity field hockey program and assistant to varsity softball, and has urged every student she can to “Do Your Homework!”

Trustees

B oard of T ru st e e s N e w s This past spring two board members stepped down after a number of years. We thank them for their selfless and devoted service.

Anne Putnam ’95 Anne Putnam was elected to the board in 2006, and during her decade plus as a trustee, she served in different roles on a number of committees including as chairperson of the Committee on Trustees, chair of the Audit Committee, and member of the Development Steering, Investment, and School Life committees. She was also president of the Alumni Association for a term. After graduating from Bucknell and before she went on to earn her MBA from Case Western, Anne also worked in Millbrook’s Alumni & Development Office for two years where she traveled extensively and was a true and trusted ambassador for the school.

George Whalen, III P ’06, ’09, ’10, ’14 George Whalen was elected a trustee in 2011. He already knew the school well, as three of his four children were Millbrook graduates and one was a current student. George was invaluable as chairperson of the Audit Committee and as a member of the Finance Committee. The school benefited enormously from George’s experience and knowledge of the financial landscape and of the Dutchess County region. George knew how to get things accomplished in a quick, efficient, and timely manner.

Millbrook School is an infinitely better place due to their many contributions.

WELCOME To OUR NEW TRUSTEEs Paul Simons ’83, P ’17, ’19 elected January 2016 Paul has been an active member of the Millbrook community for almost 40 years, as a student, alumnus, parent, and now trustee. Paul is currently managing director and head of private capital at Seaport Global Asset Management in New York City. Prior to this, he spent over 30 years in private wealth asset management, investment banking, and financial technology, including various positions at Merrill Lynch from 1988–2006, as co-head of Credit Suisse’s U.S. Private Banking division from 2006-2011, and as CEO of several early stage financial technology ventures from 2013 - 2016. Parents of three, including two Millbrook students (Harry ’17 and Will ’19), Paul and his wife, Karen, reside in Purchase, NY, and spend time in Park City, UT, and Martha’s Vineyard, MA. Karen is also actively involved at Millbrook, including as chair of Millbrook’s Parent Leadership Annual Network (PLAN). In addition to Millbrook, Paul is an alumnus of Duke University (’87) and the Executive Leadership Development Program at the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania. For the last 10 years he has served on the board of directors of Intonation Music Workshop, a Chicago music-based education program founded by his brother Mike Simons (Millbrook ’87) that serves inner-city youth.

As a student at Millbrook, Paul fondly recalls his experiences as a student and athlete including playing three varsity sports (soccer, hockey, and lacrosse, the latter of which was Millbrook’s very first boys varsity team). He is excited and honored to have the opportunity to continue to give back to Millbrook and intends to play a meaningful role in the school’s continued growth and evolution.

Sean McManus P ’18 elected October 2017 Sean McManus was named chairman of CBS Sports in February 2011, overseeing all sports properties across all CBS Sports operations. He also serves as executive producer of THE NFL ON CBS. Sean served concurrently as president of CBS News and Sports for more than five years prior to being named chairman. He was named president of CBS Sports in November 1996 and president of CBS News in October 2005. He is only the second person to hold both division titles simultaneously; Roone Arledge held both at ABC from 1977-86. Sean is the son of the late legendary sports broadcaster Jim McKay. He was graduated cum laude from Duke University in 1977 with a degree in English and history. Sean lives in New Canaan with his wife, Tracy, and is the father of Maggie, Millbrook ’18, and Jackson, who attends St. Luke’s.

FIELD REICHARDT ’67 Supporting Service, Scholarship & Diversity Growing up in a very small Midwestern town had its advantages. Everyone knew everyone else, and it was a safe

possible. “Over the past several years, I’ve been really impressed by the progress the school is making, and I looked at our 50th reunion as a chance to get my classmates to see the changes in the school through their own eyes. After making a major effort, we were quite successful, with more than half of us returning. We all had the chance to appreciate that the school is really an incredible place with a spirit remaining true to Edward Pulling’s vision and mission. How many schools have a solar field? A school farm where the students produce some of the food consumed in the dining hall? It really shows responsibility in this increasingly challenging time in which we live.”

place for children to roam and play. But in the early sixties as Field entered the 7th grade, his parents realized that this idyllic, all-Caucasian, small-town life was doing Field and his brother a disservice, limiting their perspective and their access to diversity of race and religion, of culture, and of thought. Boarding school became an option, and of the 15 different boarding schools on their list to visit, Field and his parents stopped at Millbrook first and he knew that he had found his home away from home. After graduating from Colby College, Field balanced a role in his family’s retail business with positions in various political campaigns, working for Nelson Rockefeller in 1968, for Pete McCloskey in 1972, for Gerald Ford in 1976, and for George H.W. Bush, as a senior consultant to his campaign, in 1988. As head of the State of Michigan International Programs, he was involved in trade development, foreign investments, policy, and protocol. In 1994 he headed the staff that studied the effectiveness of state government in Michigan, and after providing recommendations to the governor, more than 60% of his ideas were implemented. Entrepreneurial at heart, Field managed the family retail business from 1974 to 1989. With his sister he started the first European internet wine company before building an import business offering organic olive oils from small overseas farms. In civic life he has given his time to local causes, volunteering as a board member with the local symphony, with a workshop for people with mental and physical challenges, and with an adult literacy program, among others. His professional and personal lives have been anchored by the philosophy, “Think globally, act locally.” At Millbrook, Field learned and practiced the idea of being a good citizen, and citizenship continues to inform his life today. In June Field and his classmates celebrated their 50th reunion. With four classmates he spearheaded the effort to persuade as many back to campus as

Drafted kicking and screaming into Millbrook’s fundraising fold by Bob Anthony ’65, Field continues as a class agent and has given back to his alma mater in the form of an Annual Fund donation almost every year since graduating from college. He appreciates how the Fund and the current capital campaign support financial aid for students who are ethnically and economically diverse, “The increasing diversity of Millbrook’s community is so important. That, coupled with the remarkable broad community service program, helps all members of the school to understand that we are all on this planet together, and that we all have responsibilities to our fellow man. My hope is that an increased number and value of scholarships continue to support students, especially those from minority and less-privileged backgrounds. This is one reason I have perhaps given more than I can afford to the campaign to increase the school’s endowment.”

JOSH NEWMAN ’82 A Service Ethic That Began at Millbrook “It’s an immense privilege to represent people and to play a role in making their lives and the state better. I couldn’t ask for a better job. My hope is that I can make a material difference, whether incremental or profound on any given day, on closing the gap between the rhetoric, people saying that they’re thankful for veterans’ service, and the programs that actually serve veterans.” A United States Army veteran, community activist, non-profit founder, and State Senator for the 29th Senate district of California, Josh Newman’s personal and professional life has been driven by his desire to give back to his community. That community service ethic began for him at Millbrook, and the school’s motto – Non Sibi Sed Cunctis – has been a guidepost throughout his life.

Developing interests in civics, current events, history, and politics while a student at Millbrook, Josh continued to focus on these subjects at Yale, majoring in American History and studying politics in the 20th century. Entering the Army as an officer in 1986, Josh’s active duty assignments included service with a specialized nuclear weapons unit stationed in South Korea, and with a conventional, nuclear-capable artillery battalion stationed in Hawaii. He returned to civilian life in 1990 and landed leadership roles in marketing, public relations, business development, and sales at Internet media and mobile technology companies. While successful, Josh continued to think of how he might better serve others, and ArmedForce2Workforce was born. This nonprofit assisted young veterans in the Orange County/Greater Los Angeles area in the pursuit of rewarding, career-oriented employment. In 2016 Josh made a successful run for state senate, and today he chairs the Senate Committee on Veterans Affairs and sits on the Business and Professions, Health, Insurance, and Human Services Committees. Focused on common sense, pragmatic solutions to improve the quality of life for California families, he has introduced eighteen pieces of legislation in his first year on the job. Josh returned to Millbrook in 2015 to address students on Veteran’s Day and share the value he derived through service to his country. Visiting and speaking about his experiences was one of the ways he gives back to Millbrook. “I am so impressed at how far Millbrook has come—how much it has grown, how thoughtfully and thoroughly the school’s leadership has advanced Millbrook as compared to other boarding schools its size. My hope is that Millbrook will continue to thrive and grow and excel all while supporting that fundamental essence of Millbrook, Non Sibi Sed Cunctis. I am continually reminded about the gifts that Millbrook gave me. I was shaped by my Millbrook experience; it had an immense impact that was profound and overwhelmingly positive in lots of ways. So giving back is my way of staying connected and making sure that Millbrook can do for the next generation of students what it did for me, that is developing students as a whole person. A Millbrook education has never been simply about academics. It was never solely about athletics. It was about membership in a larger community and all the different ways that is important. That’s the essence of Millbrook, and that’s what I am grateful for. That’s been the biggest positive impact on me.”

The thing that I always say about my boarding school experience is that we all contributed—we all made the campus run, and we were a team, making everything work and making everything better. It was such a great experience to have everybody doing the work together, whether raking leaves or vacuuming the halls in the dorm, or doing dishes in the dining hall. Those things have really stuck with me and are part of my general approach to life. Anything can be enjoyable if you are doing it for the greater good, and you’re doing it with friends, together.” Now a landscape architect in California, Alex attended Cornell after Millbrook, majoring in art history, and went on to earn her master’s degree in landscape architecture from Harvard University. In her current work at Rios Clementi Hale Studios, she designs large residential projects and also enjoys working on various public landscapes including school campuses, park designs, and streetscapes. She finds one of the benefits of working for a larger firm is the opportunity to collaborate with many other design professionals whose focuses range from graphic design to product design to architecture. Alex credits Millbrook for introducing her to and developing her love of the arts—theater, dance, music, and fine arts—and for opening her mind to the possibility of a career in a creative field. Learning the importance of teamwork and working hard to make great projects with other people at Millbrook has translated beautifully in a professional career where success is dependent upon teamwork. Alex’s high standards for environmental awareness were also set at Millbrook. “Being environmentally responsible, combining beauty and aesthetics in support of the environment, science, and nature—that all began when I was a student at Millbrook and allowed me to begin my college education with this great diverse look into the world of arts and sciences. It was an amazing foundation for me.” Living in the city center in Los Angeles with her husband, Peter, and 13-yearold son, Theo, Alex finds that work and family life keep her extremely busy

nowadays, but the service ethic that was ingrained at Millbrook inspires her to give back to her local community as much as possible. When she was new to L.A., she connected with LA Works, a clearinghouse for volunteer opportunities, and volunteered with like-minded people to help meet the needs of various communities within the city. Today, she continues to volunteer in other ways: joining neighborhood committees and clean-ups, acting as a design critic at the graduate programs at USC and UCLA, and donating to cultural organizations like local theaters and museums. Supporting Millbrook is also high on Alex’s list, whether by attending a school gathering or contributing every year to the Annual Fund. Her hope is that Millbrook will continue to inspire more people to be conscientious contributors in their communities and beyond, participating in their world, and she wants to promote that philosophy and message. “I’m incredibly grateful that I was able to be a part of such an amazing place and get a great education in so many ways. I had so many wonderful teachers, and I had some incredibly mind-opening experiences in my classes. For me, supporting education and teaching is vital.”

SIERRA FLANIGAN ’05 Spearheading Sustainable Collaboration Sierra grew up in Southern California, and Millbrook, NY was a faraway place where her great-grandfather had started a small boarding school for boys in 1931. Sierra never had the opportunity to visit Millbrook as a child, so the idea to leave her West Coast home her senior year in high school, travel across the country, and attend Millbrook was bold, but Sierra was convinced that she needed to step outside her comfort zone and start afresh. She says it was the best decision she could have made and one that ultimately shaped the rest of her life. From Millbrook, Sierra attended Wheaton College, and there she was involved in campus sustainability initiatives. Before her graduation from Wheaton in 2011, she left her legacy there by planting an apple orchard in the college president’s backyard. “Millbrook was formative in inspiring my college choice and my determination to plant an apple orchard on campus in the President’s backyard during my time as a student. Why? Because I knew that institutions could do more to drive and model the change we need in the world.” Her passion for sustainability continued as Sierra began her professional career and spearheaded the campus services division of her father’s California-based energy and environmental firm, EcoMotion. Through unique partnerships, research, and experience working with schools at Ecomotion, Sierra developed a replicable process for adopting and ingraining sustainability as an institutional priority, and in April of 2016, she launched a startup, Coalesce, in Boston, with business partner Talia Arnow. Their goal is to create cohesive and enduring campus sustainability initiatives through facilitation and coaching and by making connections between the schools and a wide range of experts. Independent school clients include St. Mark’s School, Thayer Academy, Tabor Academy, and Milton Academy, and they are also consulting with colleges and universities. A firm believer in the need for cross sectoral partnerships, Sierra has also been involved with the launch of Impact Hub Boston, the founding of Boston’s Sustainability unconference, and the facilitation of ongoing Sustainability Collaboratives, which she hosts monthly through the Venture Cafe Foundation in Boston. She has contributed to multiple books and has spoken

at many conferences including the United Nations Rio+20 and American College and University Presidents Climate Summit. Sierra currently serves on the Advisory Council of AASHE and regionally focused Earthos Institute. Through her work with EcoMotion and now Coalesce, Sierra has visited and worked with hundreds of schools across the country. “In my experience, no school compares to Millbrook, whose values, community, and campus beauty are unmatched. I am a service-oriented person, and I am proud to say that Millbrook is a part of everything I do in my life. My experience taught me about myself and the world and what it means to be a global citizen. I couldn’t be prouder of the school and how it has blossomed over the years from a dream in the early 1900s to a flourishing community shaping the next generation of civic leaders.” Sierra says this of her work with Millbrook as a class agent, “I am honored to remain closely involved with Millbrook, and I hope to continue to deepen my involvement for the rest of my life. More than the people, Millbrook is a home and anchor in my life, and I can only hope that more and more students are fortunate enough to attend. I continue to hold the values and mission and motto of Millbrook so close to the heart, and I know future students will too. I am eternally grateful to Millbrook School.”

Annual Fund Leadership

At the heart of the Millbrook experience: our parents

Why they love Millbrook, and why they give back Paul and Diane Reilly P ’17 What’s To Love? We love Millbrook, its mission, the faculty, the parents, and the students, and we have found it to be a cohesive school with a true sense of its mission and identity. Millbrook has enjoyed strong and consistent leadership that has created a distinct culture and community. Each student is treated as an individual with a clear focus on maximizing their potential. Millbrook is a school with a soul! A warm, welcoming school with a mindful eye on the whole child, Millbrook was truly a ‘home away from home’ for our daughter. She felt known, needed, appreciated, and challenged within a nurturing environment. Caroline entered Millbrook as a freshman, and after four years her confidence and sense of self and purpose flourished. There are abundant opportunities for leadership positions in so many areas of the school. Millbrook students are challenged academically, athletically, and artistically and graduate feeling confident in their future pursuits.

Why Give? The Annual Fund is an essential part of helping Millbrook. We strongly believe in Millbrook, its leadership, and its mission. The school makes a real impact on the students that attend, so we feel confident that our involvement in the Annual Fund is well worth the investment.

Parent Profiles

Edward and Natalie Isler P ’17, ’19 What’s To Love? Millbrook’s school community radiates energy and purpose, and we were very attracted to those qualities for our kids, Katie ’17 and Will ’19. Of course, the academics are rigorous, but that comes with an optimistic focus on the future. That optimism appears to us to permeate everything, from the faculty approach to teaching, to even the design and sustainability of the architecture throughout the gorgeous and inspiring campus. Personal responsibility is part of every day at Millbrook, and we’ve seen our children develop right before our eyes into confidant, responsible, and independent young adults. The school is challenging yet supportive in both academics and life outside of the classroom. Millbrook teaches in ways that go far beyond homework and exams, although it does that thoroughly too. Students experience independence in a controlled environment. Parents hope that a child becomes a fully independent, happy, and engaged adult. Millbrook provides the space,

guidance and challenges for that journey. It is not always easy. The faculty role models are exceptional, and the values instilled from school traditions (like formal dinner, chapel talks, and Winter Weekend) offer lasting lessons. Important growth and learning happens in these moments too.

Why Give? Participating in making the future better is a universal responsibility. Millbrook will endure for generations to come only with support like the Annual Fund. The world needs more forward-thinking, educated people that can problem-solve and contribute to the good of the broader community. That is exactly what Millbrook produces in its matriculates. Giving now to Millbrook is a way of passively participating in the school’s future. Giving back to Millbrook is paying forward so that future generations of students will grow and be shaped by the positivity that Millbrook offers.

The Headmaster’s Challenge The Headmaster’s Challenge launched this year again at the Ainsworth in New York City and ran the first two weeks of February while alumni from 1990-2016 competed against each other for the highest percent participation in their class. This year three classes won bragging rights in three different decades: the classes of 1997, 2003, and 2013 all raised the bar for alumni giving. Participation rates were off the charts as these three classes brought gifts in from 84%, 72%, and 59% of their classmates respectively. Our dedicated class agents continue to drive engagement and activity within their classes, and these increasing participation rates continue to be an important measure of the health of our alumni and school community.

Koenigsberger Matching Challenge for Endowment An update from Headmaster Drew Casertano on this incredible opportunity to raise the school’s endowment In an act of extraordinary generosity, Robert and Dilek Koenigsberger, parents of Amber ’13 and Ilayda ’15, will contribute $1 for every $4 we raise, up to $4,000,000 on their part. While this is a stretch following immediately on the heels of an ambitious campaign, it is a rare opportunity to increase our endowment by $20,000,000. Led, once again, by our trustees, we are making good progress and are confident that we will achieve our goal by the end of 2017.

ANNUAL REPORT 2016-2017 93

Development Report Millbrook’s Development totals for the 2016-2017 school year once again broke all previous records. It truly “takes a village,” and at Millbrook all constituencies in our school family responded to the call. This tremendous support enabled Millbrook to break last year’s record setting Annual Fund with more than $2,239,000 collected in support of our annual operating budget. Moreover, alumni and parents set high standards for participation. More than 40% of our graduates and more than 93% of our current parents added their names to our donor categories last year. Another record! When one includes gifts to the capital campaign and other special gifts, the school received more than $11 million in contributions! These outstanding results have boosted the capital campaign totals to more than $67 million. Our goal is to surpass $80 million by December 31st, 2017. If we are successful in our efforts, we will have been propelled across the finish line thanks to the leadership challenge grant for endowment offered by Robert and Dilek Koenigsberger, who are prepared to contribute $4 million to Millbrook provided we can raise $16 million in endowment commitments by year end. The board of trustees have set the pace from the beginning along this exciting path, and we are grateful to them and to the many others who have stretched to enhance our campus and grow our endowment. On behalf of our colleagues in Callard House and the administration, faculty, and staff, we salute you for your abiding belief and commitment to the importance of what takes place every day on our campus. We welcome your ongoing partnership as we move forward together. Onward!
