Letter from Bill Menard
Every time I visit Millbrook School for board meetings or other events, I am once again thrilled to experience the Millbrook School that I knew as a student, parent, and long-serving trustee. The school's momentum only continues to pick up across all areas of school life, and WE CONTINUE TO
ACCOMPLISH THE MANY GOALS THAT BRING
US CLOSER to making Millbrook the finest boarding school in the country.
In 2021-2022 alone, we raised over $5 million in capital funds for endowment and brick-and-mortar projects and surpassed our Annual Fund goal of $2.4 million. Those latter funds go directly to our operating budget to support programs and financial aid, helping make a Millbrook education affordable to all. Last year we provided financial aid to 32% of our students, an increase over previous years. We also saw our community become more diverse, increasing our population of domestic students of color to 23%.
Capital fundraising allowed us to complete our counseling center, and we are poised to finish the transformation of Pulling Circle. In these days of turbulent labor markets, we added significantly to our salaries and benefits for faculty and staff while expanding our efforts to provide professional support through our faculty growth and renewal program. In this way, we ensure that our greatest assets—the men and women who teach, coach, and mentor our students—are well-trained, supported, and compensated. Families have taken notice of our continued growth and momentum; we had a record-high number of applications, nearly 800, for just over 100 spots. Increasing pride among our alumni body also resulted in the largest attendance at Alumni Weekend ever this summer, including more than forty members of the Class of 2017.
Our ambitions remain squarely mission-centric. We continue to work toward realizing the goals in our Vision 2025 strategic plan, which include expanding our athletic facilities to create a true community sports center focused on competitive athletics, student and faculty wellness, and school pride. Groundbreaking on new housing for six additional faculty families will begin soon, and we will build a new boys dormitory in the not-too-distant future.
Our most important recent success has been selecting Millbrook’s seventh head of school. Jon Downs’ leadership has been nothing short of remarkable, and the support of so many—the board, a phenomenal administrative team, a singularly dedicated faculty and staff, and the entire Millbrook community—inspires Jon to move Millbrook into the future under the banner of our motto, Non Sibi Sed Cunctis. Your support makes Millbrook School an unstoppable and unbeatable proposition. Because of you, I cannot wait for the future!
With every good wish and unrelenting gratitude,
William L. Menard ’78 Chair of the Board of Trustees
Letter from the Development Office
We are excited to report that Millbrook enjoyed another outstanding year in all respects in 2021-2022. THE THOUGHTFUL AND
CONSIDERABLE
GENEROSITY of so many members of our Millbrook family provided invaluable resources to the school’s annual and capital priorities, and gifts to our school totaled $8,306,111. Millbrook’s bright future—to borrow an aviation meteorology term—is “CAVU,” Ceiling And Visibility Unlimited.
The campus has been abuzz with activity, and we are grateful to share highlights with you. On Pulling Circle stands a new Pulling House, which is a same-but-better, more modern version of the original. Next to that is Anthony House, new home to Millbrook’s Alumni & Development Office and welcome center for visiting alumni. Well-designed spaces for our alumni and development colleagues will allow them to continue their important work: propelling the school forward as we approach Millbrook’s centennial in 2031.
That important work includes the Annual Fund, which covers 10% of annual operating costs and continues apace as we reached our ambitious target last year of $2.4 million. VIth form parents worked with energy and enthusiasm to contribute nearly $400,000 of that total and name the Class of 2022 Terrace on the north end of Casertano Hall in honor of their children.
The 2022-2023 academic year is now in full swing, and we have a lengthy to-do list. Looking forward over the next three years, Vision 2025 includes significant expansion and facility upgrades to the Mills Athletic Center, the relocation of the tennis courts, a new boys dormitory, and a host of other projects including implementing a long-range master plan for Millbrook’s Trevor Zoo. With your belief, commitment, and loyal partnership, we will achieve our future goals and make our school ever stronger as we further the mission our founders envisioned 91 years ago.
CAVU! We look forward to this journey together,
Nancy
I. Stahl Robert W. Anthony ’65 Director of Advancement Assistant to the Head of School for External RelationsDown School Road ALUMNI WEEKEND 2022
There is nothing quite like getting to reconnect with familiar faces excited to be back at the place many called home in their teenage years. This feeling was in abundance as Millbrook hosted the first in-person Alumni Weekend in three years. All reunion classes got the chance to mingle, connect, explore campus, and honor fellow classmates on their old stomping grounds.
The weekend began with gatherings for classes celebrating their 50th reunion—the classes of 1970, 1971, and 1972. Coming together to reminisce and reconnect, some for the first time in many years, they met for dinner on Thursday night and enjoyed panel discussions before recording their oral histories on Friday. These 50th reunion alumni enjoyed extra tours of campus and the Trevor Zoo and partook in master classes in the Holbrook Arts Center and at the farm. They were joined on Friday evening by members of the classes of 1995, 1996, and 1997 for the annual 25th and 50th reunion dinner.
On Saturday, campus filled with members from all other classes. Classmates greeted each other joyfully and there was plenty of time for everyone to catch up. Plucking their class banners from the green grass of Pulling Circle, classes rallied for the walk across the Flagler Quad and into the chapel for the traditional Alumni Assembly. After giving an update on the state of the school, Head of School Jonathan Downs ’98, with the help of Senior Master Robert Anthony ’65, honored two alumni. Norman B. Bird ’69 was presented with the Edward Pulling Community Service Award, and Frank Borges ’70 was honored with a Millbrook Medal. Mr. Downs and all alumni in attendance also took the opportunity to thank and honor Drew and Linda Casertano, who spent the afternoon and evening enjoying reunion activities, for their dedication to the school and community over more than three decades.
Following the assembly, all alumni spent time reconnecting, enjoying food and cocktails in Casertano Hall, and dancing on the Class of 2022 Terrace.
SPECIAL AWARDS
Two
MILLBROOK MEDAL
Frank Borges ’70
A humble gentleman, no one deserves our recognition and gratitude more than Frank, who has truly embodied Millbrook’s mission and values throughout his life and served his school in so many distinguished ways.
Frank’s story is a personal and powerful one. After graduating from Trinity College in 1974, he earned a law degree from the University of Connecticut and then served as associate counsel for The Travelers Insurance Companies from 1978-1981 before becoming deputy mayor of Hartford, Connecticut. Twice he was elected treasurer of the State of Connecticut, an office he held from 1986-1993. He left the political arena to work for GE Capital’s Financial Guaranty Insurance Company before joining Landmark Partners as chairman and chief executive officer.
All along, Frank serves or has served on several boards including Millbrook School, where he was first elected in 1980. He was Millbrook’s first board member to be coaxed back to the board with his re-election in 2013, and he remains a wise and highly respected trustee today. He has also served on the boards of Trinity College and the NAACP, and he is currently chair of the Knight Foundation. Other board positions include Selected/Clipper Funds, the Connecticut Public Broadcasting Network, the University of Connecticut Medical/Dental School and Health Center, and the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving.
Frank is all about giving people opportunities while bolstering their spirits and enhancing their chances to lead successful and meaningful lives. He seeks and draws out the humanity in everyone while treating all whom he meets with dignity and respect. For his service and devotion, we honor him with a Millbrook Medal.
EDWARD PULLING COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD
Norman Bird ’69
Following graduation from Goddard College, Norman married his wife, Diane, and they settled in Connecticut. The Birds had three sons, one of whom, Hayden, became a Millbrook graduate in 2005. Norman worked at Otis Elevator’s North American and world headquarters for 36 years; he became both a legend and a mentor.
Norman has stated that he has been guided for the past 50-plus years by Millbrook School’s motto: Non Sibi Sed Cunctis (Not for oneself, but for all). A member of the volunteer fire service for more than half a century, he has also helped at Special Olympics events locally and abroad since 1983. He ran his town’s youth soccer program while serving as a coach and overseeing the renovation of the town’s playing fields. He has been a member of the National Ski Patrol since 1993 and has participated in charity bike rides since he turned 60, raising more than $50,000 for the Closer to Free Ride, which supports Smilow Cancer Center. These days Norman keeps busy as the chief of the Riverton Volunteer Fire Department.
Three years ago, Norman volunteered to help his class celebrate their 50th reunion. Few, if any, have ever done a better job of gathering his classmates for a truly remarkable weekend. Since then, he has worked diligently to keep in touch with his Millbrook schoolmates, and as a class, they are united in their shared goal of leaving a lasting legacy to Millbrook. We salute Norman, who, in a distinctive way, has extended the principles and the spirit of community service in life beyond Millbrook through his continued service as a first responder and volunteer extraordinaire.
ALUMNI WEEKEND 2022
COMMENCEMENT 2022
Millbrook’s 91st Commencement marked a return to tradition while celebrating the accomplishments and aspirations of the mighty Class of 2022. Sunny skies lit the large white tent on Flagler Quad as friends and family gathered to salute the 89 graduates. Jonathan Downs ’98 presided over his first Commencement as Millbrook’s seventh head of school, bridging past and future.
Commencement exercises were truly a family affair, beginning with remarks by Trustee William “Fritz” Souder, proud parent of Hattie ’22. As he welcomed all on behalf of the Board of Trustees, he beseeched the Class of 2022, to “please do me one favor: never forget. Never forget how fortunate you are to have experienced life at Millbrook.”
Class of 2022 member Emma Levy next took to the podium to introduce her grandmother, keynote speaker Judge Judith Sheindlin, for some words of wisdom. TV’s Judge Judy reminded the class that they should do everything possible to “reach your full potential in whatever you do. If you don’t, you’re really just cheating yourself.” After reminding graduates to never be too busy to take a call from their mother, she closed by encouraging the graduates to always be themselves and to “never let anyone but you define you.”
Nominated by his peers, Elijah Grant-Pereira delivered the Sixth Form Commencement Address, focused on the unity of the Class of 2022 and expressed gratitude for the community they created together. “Our class cares about tradition, we care about culture, and most importantly,” said Elijah, “we care about making others care because we know that’s where it all starts.” Following some goodnatured ribbing of Mr. Downs, Elijah led his classmates in applause for the members of the Millbrook community who had been instrumental in seeing them through to graduation.
Mr. Downs then
bestowed
the following special Commencement Awards:
The Edward G. Allen Sportsmanship Cup to Thomasina Nash
The Community Service Cup to Precious Esielem and Evelynn Najork
The Casertano Cup to Joe Masterson
Summa Cum Laude to Adam Beck
The Class of 2022 faced pandemic-related challenges with grace and fortitude, using love and humor to support each other as they blossomed into campus leaders. As they embark upon various new adventures, they take something of Millbrook with them, as surely as they leave a bit of themselves behind.
CONGRATULATIONS TO THE CLASS OF 2022!

WAKE FOREST
I am attending Wake Forest because of their holistic approach to learning. Like Millbrook, students are treated as individuals and learners beyond basic test scores. At Millbrook I learned how valuable a community can be and how important it is to be a positive member of any group of which you are a part. Going forward at Wake, and in life, I am always going to strive to be that positive contributor because I know how much impact a strong community can have on people and places. Simply put, everyone deserves to be known and needed, and I hope to help make that a reality wherever I am.
EDUCATOR’S INSIGHT:
Freddy proved himself to be one of the most competitive, most tenacious, and most resilient members of his class. When Freddy is challenged, he is at his absolute best. He thrives under adversity because he knows how to work and that the path forward is to be diligent, to ask questions, and to take intellectual risks. Freddy loves school, more specifically, Millbrook, and he has given a part of himself to this community.

DARTMOUTH
I’m attending Dartmouth because I want to be at a prestigious, smaller school where I can build close relationships with my professors like I did at Millbrook. I was also impressed with the emphasis Dartmouth places on the undergraduate experience and how they help students keep their long-term goals in sight. I want to impact the world, and I believe a Dartmouth education will help me clarify my plans. Millbrook pushed me to be known and needed and to step up in every space possible. Millbrook fostered the curiosity and drive to go above and beyond, and these are skills that I’ll definitely use at Dartmouth.
EDUCATOR’S INSIGHT:
Precious is admired by her teachers for her relentless grit, her willingness to push herself, and her persistent drive to dig deep in her courses, doubling up on math and science in her final two years so she could take almost every course we offer in those two fields. Precious is esteemed by her classmates as a patient student tutor, a warm and empathetic human development facilitator, and a motivated and dedicated DEI leader. She inspired all of us to work harder, to think of others, and to strive to be our best selves.

Tracy He EMORY
I chose Emory because of its reputation, location, and strength in biology, specifically in the medical field. I’m most looking forward to building connections with professors and classmates and exploring new academic avenues. In high school I worked hard, and I always felt supported and respected for my efforts. Inside and outside the classroom, Millbrook engrained in me the value of service and a true love for the natural world. The combination of these values has become a guiding force in my life and will influence what I do in the future.
EDUCATOR’S INSIGHT:
Tracy’s diligence and persistence always pays off. Be it her consistently hard work in absolutely every class and willingness to explore, understand, and expand her knowledge, or her truly impressive service project to improve the lives of stray cats in her native city of Shenzhen, Tracy never gives up. Her ability to identify and address a need to the betterment of all is uncommon and effective.

COLORADO
SCHOOL OF MINES
Colorado School of Mines has everything I want in a school, including open-access labs and extensive research opportunities at all levels. It is also a prime location with access to recreation, industry, and job opportunities. I am most looking forward to what new possibilities might arise while I am there and getting to know more people in my field. When I started at Millbrook, I wasn’t comfortable asking for help or communicating with people that could help me. I quickly learned that if I wanted or needed something, I could ask for it, and there were plenty of faculty and staff around and eager to support me. Post-Millbrook, I realize the value of communication and that it can be beneficial to collaborate. I was able to be more successful at Millbrook because the size and closeness of the community meant that I could count on support from others. Being a better communicator made me a better community member, a skill I know will help me greatly in the future.
EDUCATOR’S INSIGHT:
Tom’s time at Millbrook has been transformational for him and, in many ways, for the science department overall. He has seized every opportunity to help strengthen department programs, initiating and creating a design and fabrication lab that is available to all campus scientists and creators. Tom has leveraged every opportunity and brought his personal ambition to bear for the entire community.

Abby Ainley
BOWDOIN
I chose Bowdoin because in a lot of ways it felt like Millbrook. The highly competitive academics and athletics mean that I will continue to be challenged and to grow as a dedicated student athlete. I am most looking forward to hitting the ice at the next level with girls from around the nation and different parts of the world. I expect my transition to Bowdoin to be smooth because I learned to be open and outgoing at Millbrook. So many good things can happen when you take the first step to meet new people and smile at unfamiliar faces. Being part of the welcoming and inclusive community at Millbrook made a huge impact on how I feel about myself and my ability to thrive in a new situation.
EDUCATOR’S INSIGHT:
Abby achieved high honor roll every single marking period and is a machine when a task is at hand that needs to be accomplished—just consider it done. Her constant pursuit of excellence and her high standards have made our Millbrook School culture much stronger.

Adam Beck NORTHWESTERN
My interest in sports journalism made Northwestern my number one choice. A student on my campus tour described internship opportunities at Sports Illustrated and the chance to talk Northwestern Big 10 sports on the radio, so I chose Northwestern for the combination of programs like these. Plus, Northwestern offers challenging but flexible academics close to Chicago. I’m psyched to meet new people, make new friends, and immerse myself in the sports culture in college.
As an incoming IVth former at Millbrook in 2019, I was very shy and reserved, but by my VIth form year, I’d found a home. I became a student leader, found my voice, and grew comfortable interacting with pretty much everyone. Millbrook culture encourages you to self-advocate and pushes you to seek opportunities to address issues or initiate change you want to see. Living away from home necessitated independence and standing up for myself, but Millbrook’s culture, especially, prepared me to be successful in college and beyond.
EDUCATOR’S INSIGHT:
Adam took on Millbrook’s hardest classes and set new standards for excellence in all of them. From his very first day at school, his teachers crowed about his ability and intellectual curiosity. We have come to expect excellence and integrity at every turn. His integrity and humility have made him a generous learner, always willing to support his fellow students.

VANDERBILT
I was initially attracted to Vanderbilt because of its emphasis on a liberal arts education and personal development, just like at Millbrook. People here are kind, and the campus, with its traditional style in a small and lively city, is welcoming. So many of my Millbrook experiences continue to help me succeed. Living away from home strengthened my independence and organizational skills and encouraged me to become fully engaged within the Millbrook community. With every opportunity to jump into leadership roles, I’ve not been afraid to interact with older students, create relationships with adults and professionals on campus, or ask for help if needed. I’m grateful for Millbrook for helping me to become a better person and better student and for providing a lifetime community of friends and family.
EDUCATOR’S INSIGHT:
Evelynn is an academic powerhouse and has been prepared and at the top of her class in every class. Her achievement is rooted in her curiosity, work ethic, and intellectual firepower. She also seizes every opportunity to show her mastery by helping her peers in the classroom, always raising the level. While Evelynn has repeatedly achieved the highest marks in academics, she also shows her unrelenting desire to leave our community better than she found it.

Jaylen Thatcher
UCLA
The independence I gained at Millbrook was a huge factor in my decision to attend UCLA, all the way across the country. Millbrook taught me to advocate for myself and to feel confident making the leap from a small preparatory school with supportive, engaged teachers and coaches in every realm to a massive public university. As a day student dorm leader, the leadership training I received at Millbrook and involvement in dorm life was great training for living in the large group setting I will find at UCLA. I know I will be able to be a positive part of the community.
EDUCATOR’S INSIGHT:
Jaylen may be the Millbrook student who talks the least but says the most. He is also confident, powerful, dynamic, influential, and fiercely loyal. Jaylen has powered through his four years at Millbrook, quietly leading in the classroom, in athletics, and in student life. He thrives in every role while earning top grades in a remarkably rigorous schedule. Jaylen has quietly made an impact that will last for years to come.
– Shannon VollmerThe Culminating Experience for Seniors (CES), a longstanding signature program for all Millbrook VIth formers, creates a space for participants to pursue a project connected to their experiences and interests at school. The resulting work, presented to the community, is often both unique to the student and to Millbrook.
This year’s crop of CES honorees included an album of original music, a short film, interpretative photos of campus landmarks, a mental health assessment of community members, a philanthropic project, several issues-oriented essays, and an attempt to build a supersonic rocket from spare parts.
Individuality is a hallmark of CES, and honorees are those who have been able to share their best efforts with the community while demonstrating their own growth. As culminating as CES is, it is also a starting point for VIth formers, as they leave Millbrook armed with the ability to identify, pursue, and complete a long-term passion project.
ELIJAH GRANT-PEREIRA I MADE AN ALBUM
Elijah’s CES went far beyond the basics of contemporary recording techniques and solidified his love of music and command of the medium. While creating his original music, Elijah considered and confronted the challenges an artist can face in bringing an idea to fruition, and, ultimately, the five songs he presented to an enthusiastic audience in the Holbrook Arts Center demonstrated his creativity and the joy of collaborating with supportive peers.
DANIELLE
SINGER
MILLBROOK BLUES
Danielle connected her love of photography to Millbrook’s sense of place through iconic images processed as cyanotypes.
Having embraced photography as her medium of choice early in her Millbrook career, she learned about cyanotype in her Alternative Processes class and pursued it further in Honors Photography. The cyanotype process renders images in blue hues so that they may appear stark and moody. In her selection of a subject like the Flagler Memorial Chapel, Danielle invites viewers to see the familiar in a new and unfamiliar way.
EVELYNN NAJORK
THE HYDE AMENDMENT:
Disproportionately Denying the Right to Abortion for Native American Women
Evelynn’s engagement with women’s health and reproductive rights throughout her Millbrook career and her more recent exploration of her own Native American heritage coalesced into a particularly personal and thoughtful Blaine Essay that she presented at the CES Festival. An examination of the systemic denial of constitutional rights to a profoundly disadvantaged community, Evelynn’s essay was exhaustively researched, clearly presented, and very convincing.
SENIOR SMILES
JD built his project on the CES of Isabella Puccinelli ’19, in which she created a portrait series of the Class of 2022 as they began their Millbrook journey.
JD took Isabella’s project to its logical conclusion by photographing every member of his class as VIth formers. JD’s love of photography blossomed at Millbrook, and his CES was a true celebration of his experience and his progress as a student and artist. Wrangling nearly all his classmates to sit for portraits was itself a massive undertaking, and the joyful images capture in moments the personalities of his classmates.
ALLESSIA
CARLO
THE STRUGGLE OF UNDOCUMENTED IMMIGRANTS IN AMERICA
In her Blaine Essay, Allessia described the difficulties of undocumented immigrants in coping with the COVID-19 pandemic. Using a variety of sources, she examined the obstacles to vaccination and healthcare that disproportionately affect those seeking to enter the United States both legally and illegally.
STEPHEN PESCHEL
RUSSIAN POETRY, ACTIVISM & ART
Truly one of Millbrook’s academic powerhouses in math and science, Stephen also excelled in AP French and undertook an independent study to learn Russian with the help of a Ukraine-based tutor.
In Stephen’s CES presentation, he read aloud, in Russian, several original poems and songs while displaying their English translations. His readings were accompanied by illustrations in the form of photographs and art. Stephen’s interest in Russian culture has roots in his family, and his connection to a Ukrainian tutor during the turmoil of the war with Russia made this project all the more personal and culminating.
TOMMI NASH AND MORGAN REED
MENTAL HEALTH IN RELATION TO
MILLBROOK STUDENTS
Tommi and Morgan teamed up to shed light on mental health challenges among their Millbrook peers.
They completed a campus-wide survey designed to assess the overall mental well-being of the community and then drew on personal experiences to craft evocative photos intended to destigmatize mental health discussions. As an honors photography student, Morgan communicated complex and personal ideas with her camera. In collaboration, Tommi became the subject of Morgan’s photos, sharing personal experiences for the betterment of the community.
TOM POWELLENGINEERING & DESIGN: An Exercise in Murphy’s Law
Tom’s project was carefully conceived, planned, initiated, and…terminated.
His interest and expertise in engineering led to a plan to design and build a supersonic model rocket that would use no off-the-shelf components. An undeniably ambitious goal, Tom built his flight computer, wrote code, and began to fabricate his rocket and prepare for launch day. However, supply chain issues, FAA regulations, and other vagaries of amateur space flight conspired against him, and he effectively aborted the mission. His computer models provided a look at what might have been: a rocket achieving an altitude of 11,952 feet and a maximum speed of 1,167.68 mph during a four-minute flight. Faced with challenges at every step, Tom’s CES demonstrated his creative problem-solving and ability to change course and adapt to circumstances beyond his control.
GROWING MILLBROOK KICKS CANCER
Since arriving as a IIIrd form student, Freddy has been an activist and champion for all things Millbrook, so it was a natural fit for him to lead the Millbrook Kicks Cancer (MKC) group on campus.
For years he has organized events to raise money and awareness for the fight against cancer. The yearly Pink the Rink hockey games for boys and girls has become a beloved tradition and the group’s featured fundraising event. As part of his CES, Freddy proposed transforming the group into a community service. The added time and structure would allow for more planning and preparation so MKC can increase its awareness efforts. Freddy’s work with MKC is a legacy that is sure to inspire others to get involved.
KYLE PROCKTER
THE ART OF MAKING A SHORT FILM
Kyle has always been interested in cinema and was a member and leader Millbrook’s Film Club. He set out to share his passion with the entire school by writing, directing, and producing Flood, a psychological thriller about overcoming mental barriers. In a panel discussion after the film’s screening, his cast and crew commented on Kyle’s professionalism and clear vision for his work.
BRYSHA SCHMIDT
WEIGHTLIFTING CLINIC
A tri-varsity athlete, Brysha’s success comes from hard work in the weight room, a space that she has, at times, found to be negative and unwelcoming, especially for girls and less-experienced athletes. Through weightlifting clinics, Brysha correlated greater access to the weight room with greater success for Millbrook girls’ sports. Her clinic demonstrated that the weight room can and must be a more productive place for all through some simple adjustments of attitude and a commitment to inclusivity.
ADAM BECK
ESTABLISHING ATHLETIC COMMENTARY AS A COMMUNITY SERVICE
On Adam’s YouTube channel, he is a sports stat machine with thoughtful and insightful opinions. Bringing his insight and color to Millbrook games via live commentary during winter games, Adam and a few friends produced broadcasts of basketball and hockey games with energy and character. Taking it to the next level, Adam proposed making live commentary a more permanent program as some combination of community service and sport alternative.
MillbrookEngage
by MillbrookEngage Program Director Trish RexhouseFounded in 2015, the MillbrookEngage internship program quickly became a part of the modern-day fabric of our school. The program is mission-centered, an embodiment of Millbrook School’s motto, Non Sibi Sed Cunctis, and core value of service. Since its inception, 60 students have participated in this unique program, serving not-forprofit organizations during the summer before their VIth form year.
MillbrookEngage continues to be a win-win-win: for our students, the not-for-profits they serve, and Millbrook School. The program's significant growth—more than doubling in size in the last two years despite the challenges of the pandemic—affirms its success. Working beyond the borders of Millbrook’s campus this summer, 15 students brought Non Sibi Sed Cunctis to new regions, sectors, and organizations and returned to campus in September with newly gained real-world experiences to share during the annual MillbrookEngage Chapel Talk. A deep commitment to service connects Millbrook students past and present. The legacy set forth by alumnus Herb Shultz ’63 when he conceived of and initially funded MillbrookEngage is alive, well, and growing.
ROGAN FAUCI
Rogan spent eight weeks working at Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital at NYU Langone in New York City, where he had been a patient as a young child. Remembering the important work done by child life specialists at the hospital, Rogan tailored his MillbrookEngage internship to his interests, expertise, and experience. He brought his love of music, discovered while he was a patient, to many children at the hospital by playing for them and with them, giving them something to look forward to each day. Rogan found MillbrookEngage to be extremely rewarding and worthwhile. “No matter what you do, you’re helping,” he said. “Millbrook taught me to always be willing to jump into things to make a difference.”
IntroductionNOLA GREENBERG
Nola found both her creative voice and drive to serve at Millbrook. Chinatown Soup is a group dedicated to supporting artists and growing grassroots arts culture in Nola’s home of New York City and includes a café and gallery space as well as studio space for resident artists. During her term there, Nola managed their social media, worked with artists and entrepreneurs using the space, performed administrative tasks, and assisted in applying for grants. She was able to forge connections with all kinds of people, a skill she’ll continue to develop at Millbrook and beyond.
MARGAUX LEVINE
Margaux’s internship for the Connecticut chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) gave her deep insight into the workings of a busy non-profit while providing them with hours of needed support. As the world’s largest private funder of suicide prevention research, the work of the AFSP depends greatly on the fundraising efforts of local chapters. Margaux was instrumental in planning events, maintaining existing partnerships, and connecting with potential donors, all in service of raising suicide awareness. This internship allowed her to develop new personal connections with AFSP staff and volunteers, many of whom had firsthand experiences with mental health challenges, and realize the importance of destigmatizing discussions about mental health.
LUCY LI
Lucy gained hands-on and administrative experience in the medical field through her MillbrookEngage internship with the Association of Chinese American Physicians. Though she spent some time writing notes and filing reports, a majority of her work was patient focused. Lucy was trained to perform several nursing tasks, including administering EKGs and other tests, and she developed close working relationships with several doctors and nurses. Lucy maximized her time and sums up her experience: “I am now determined to pursue a pre-med track in the future thanks to MillbrookEngage.”
ANN NAJORK
Ann’s MillbrookEngage internship brought her to the Hudson Valley Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (HVSPCA). Ann, a zoo curator, sought a role that would further her career goals while also serving an organization in need. She spent most of her time in the cattery, training and socializing kittens for adoption and arranging placements in forever homes. HVSPCA personnel praised Ann as one of the best-prepared volunteers ever, and, in the true spirit of MillbrookEngage, she left the shelter better than she found it.
Maddie
THEO WILTON
Theo interned at CCTV, an independent broadcaster committed to using television to engage citizens with local government and community in Burlington, Vermont, by broadcasting town meetings, hearings, and other local programming. Theo served as a true utility player, shooting video in-studio and on location, editing and archiving, and planning coverage and programming. Theo has practice in journalism as editor-in-chief of The Silo, Millbrook’s student newspaper, and he thrived in the fast-paced environment of news gathering while honing his ability to problem solve and think on his feet.
Kosmas Brandenberg interned at the Lenape Center, an organization creating programs, exhibitions, workshops, performances, symposia, land acknowledgment, and ceremonies to continue the Lenape presence in New York and educate people across the United States.
Nick Chen interned as a docent at the King Manor Museum in Queens, New York. He also worked on programming related to climate change and deforestation.
Hannah Coon undertook a research project on the Trevor Zoo's marmosets using behavioral ethograms and analysis of their corticosterone hormones to report on their stress levels.
Sophia DeStazio interned at Hope On A Mission in Poughkeepsie, New York. She maintained an online thrift store, recruited volunteers, and did other work in support of homeless and underserved constituencies.
Toby Morrow interned in the Department of Media Studies at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie.
Ryan Pink worked in fundraising and on social media in support of Athletes vs. Crohns & Colitis of Westchester, New York. The organization encourages young people to participate in sports while coping with a chronic illness.
Johnny Rigolino worked as a camp counselor with Edge Athletics in Poughkeepsie, where he organized and facilitated youth basketball clinics.
Forrest Schmitt helped to connect immigrants with legal assistance and other resources at the Berkshire Immigrant Center in Pittsfield, Massachusetts.
AZA ACCREDITATION EARNED IN AUGUST 2022
The Trevor Zoo has once again earned accreditation from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, affirming its status as a safe and healthy home for over 70 species.
The AZA undertakes an all-encompassing in-person survey every five years—of animal welfare and well-being, facilities and husbandry practices, and physical and behavioral health records, plus evaluation of the guest services and visitor experience—before a group of accreditation experts bestows its seal of approval. AZA accreditation is the gold standard and is very difficult to earn and maintain, and the Trevor Zoo is one of only 239 fully accredited zoos in the nation.
The highly scrutinizing, fastidious inspection resulted in a report that made clear the need for future facility updates but praised the strengths of the zoo’s programs and people. The AZA visiting committee noted that “The Trevor Zoo is exceptional in its commitment to conservation of natural resources. They promote this philosophy and are an outstanding example of conservation in action…The staff is also highly motivated and enthusiastic about the institution and the roles they have in its success." Attaining AZA accreditation is a major accomplishment and a tribute to the dedication of the Trevor Zoo staff and Millbrook School students to keep our animals healthy and safe.
FUTURE OF THE TREVOR ZOO
No other high school students in the world can say:
• they have hands-on experience at their high school, learning about the challenges that endangered species face in the wild
• while caring for endangered newborns, their parents, and several other endangered species in a zoo accredited by the AZA.
As a non-profit organization, the AZA is dedicated to advancing zoos and aquariums in the areas of conservation, education, science, and recreation. They manage several conservation initiatives and programs including the Species Survival Program (SSP), which identifies ways to protect the populations of endangered animals at AZA-accredited zoos and aquariums by sustaining a healthy and genetically diverse population in captivity. These animals act as ambassadors to their wild kin and provide important information about the species so we can collectively work to protect them in the wild.
AZA accreditation makes participation in programs like these possible. Without accreditation, the zoo would not have the access to the endangered species we currently have on exhibit, including the red pandas, red wolves, golden lion tamarins, ring-tailed lemurs, black-and-white ruffed lemurs, white-naped cranes, keas, African cichlids, chinchillas, Blanding’s turtles, and the Kaiser’s spotted newts, among other vulnerable and threatened species. Students’ education is exponentially enhanced by caring and providing enrichment for these animals. Additionally, they have opportunities to shadow the veterinarian and study the behavior of these species through two unique courses: Animal Behavior and Independent Science Research.
A Master Plan: Building on Education and Conservation
The incredible educational programming that happens at Millbrook's Trevor Zoo can only continue within modernized facilities, and planning has begun to address the zoo’s aging infrastructure. As we already look ahead to our next accreditation in five years, we have many shortterm plans in addition to a long-term master plan and the next major development of zoo facilities. The school has hired two firms, Slam and Becker & Perry, to help create a vision for a modern facility and continuing excellent educational programming for students. There is no doubt: the future holds so much promise for species on both sides of School Road.
CAREER NIGHT
Alumni and other members of the school family shared their time and experiences with current students at Millbrook’s first Career Night.
Following an illuminating Friday Forum by Jordana Kier, a local entrepreneur, co-creator, and co-CEO of LOLA, a feminine care brand focusing on high-quality, sustainable products, students moved through presentations by Millbrook alumni, parents, and friends eager to share their experiences and professional insights in their chosen fields.
The program connected students to Millbrook alumni finding success in a multitude of careers: medicine and healthcare, international affairs, marketing, entertainment/talent management and casting, fine arts, law, engineering, journalism, finance, filmmaking, entrepreneurship and more. Seven parents, nine alumni, and three friends of the school led sessions in-person and virtually with students who had opportunities to ask many good questions.
Among the alumni presenters were Dan Cohen ’86, Devon Yates ’96, Mary Nelson Sinclair ’03, AJ Links ’07, Erin Kennedy ’07, Andrew Hughes ’10, Caleb King ’13, and Arthur Xiao ’15.
Thank you to all guests for sharing your time and experiences with Millbrook!
MELANIE FARRINGTON Retiring After 22 Years of Service
Beginning in 2000, Melanie Farrington became the face of Millbrook. Over 22 years, from the front door of Callard House, she greeted not only prospective families but all who visited our campus—alumni, friends, and parents alike. Warm and caring, kind and sweet, genuine and hospitable—these are just a few of the compliments passed on by those visitors whom she made feel instantly welcomed and right at home.
Melanie began in Millbrook’s Alumni & Development Office before transitioning to the Admission Office fairly early in her Millbrook career. While her outward persona has been the characteristic most recognized and appreciated, she was dedicated behind the scenes to keeping the Admission Office well prepared and running smoothly. Whether organizing tours and following up with tour guides, fluffing pillows in the living room of Callard House and getting hot chocolate for eager students on a cold New York afternoon, or preparing mailings to follow up on prospective student inquiries, she did everything with her whole heart and the greatest attention to detail.
A lifelong resident of Millbrook, Melanie and her husband, Guy, reside just a few short miles from campus. Don’t be surprised to see them at the upcoming Millbrook basketball games. Melanie is surely a Millbrook fan for life, and we remain always grateful to have her in the Millbrook family.
“Mrs. Farrington has been the handshake, heart, and hug of Millbrook.”

A WARM WELCOME HOME
ELIZA CHAPMAN ’12
Eliza has returned to Millbrook as director of alumni relations along with roles as head dorm parent in Guest House and head field hockey coach. Eliza made her home in Guest previously as a IIIrd former and as a dorm leader in her Vth form year. After graduating with a psychology major and education minor from Sewanee: The University of The South, Eliza was eager to return to the world of independent schools and worked at Indian Mountain School and Greenwich Country Day School. “After Millbrook, I knew I wanted to work in education,” she said.
Eliza maintained strong connections with many on campus, and when she heard about an opening in the Alumni and Development Office, she seized the opportunity. “It’s really easy for me to talk to people about Millbrook,” she said.
Eliza is eager to implement programming that will foster connections between alumni and current students and faculty. A proven way to maintain alumni engagement is to encourage past students to visit campus often. Located between Pulling House and Casertano Dining Hall, Anthony House, the new welcome center for alumni and offices for those dedicated to Millbrook’s alumni body, will make this idea more appealing than ever. “I can talk to recent alums as easily as someone from a much older class because we have this special place in common,” said Eliza.
Familiar Faces in New Places
JOE RACITI
Joe is Millbrook’s new chair of the Art Department. Taking over from former department chair and current colleague Sarah MacWright, Joe continues his tireless advocacy for the arts on campus, weaving music, dance, drama, and the visual arts into the fabric of the community. In his eighth year at Millbrook, Joe leads our vocal music program, teaching songwriting and music production, leading Millbrook Singers, and working as musical director for productions in the Chelsea Morrison Theater. He is also a visual artist and teaches Millbrook’s computer programming course.
Joe shares that he is “excited to assume the role of Art Department chair and grateful to have had such an outstanding role model in my first six years at Millbrook. Sarah MacWright modeled thoughtfulness, generosity, care for her colleagues and students, and an exceptional work ethic. I’m thrilled to lead an exceptionally strong team of art educators, all deeply dedicated to creating joyful and transformative experiences in art and eager to help our students find their place in the Holbrook Arts Center.”
BRIAN COUGHLIN
Brian joined Millbrook’s faculty in 2018 as the director of instrumental music and is now also coordinating Millbrook’s unique Culminating Experience for Seniors (CES) program, working with VIth formers exploring their interests beyond their classes, sports, and activities. The CES program asks each senior to identify a topic that is meaningful to them and to work independently to develop their ideas into a project to be presented to the school community. The most “culminating” element of the program is often the honing and uncovering of their true personalities and passions as revealed over the course of the year.
Familiar Faces in New Places
DEVANDRIA BERNARD
Devandria is extremely excited to be back on Pulling Circle. Dev came to Millbrook in 2018, directly after college graduation, and left in 2021 for a little less than one year. While she enjoyed her time away, she was drawn back to Millbrook for its people and its community. She returns as a senior associate director of admission and alumni affairs and will work with families through both the Admission Office and Alumni & Development Office. Her additional responsibilities include advisor, dorm head of Prum Hall, and assistant coach of the girls' varsity basketball team. “I’m so thrilled to be back at Millbrook,” said Dev, “and look forward to working closely with prospective families, current students, and alums in meaningful ways.”
BROOKE BURKE
Brooke has added assistant director of athletics to her portfolio in the Mills Athletic Center. As head athletic trainer, Brooke’s commitment and expertise were evident in the hard work she put in to keeping Mustang athletes in peak form and health. Winning records and great performances are the result of top care in the training room, and she is now bringing that care and attention to helping to manage Millbrook’s athletics program.
“I'm really excited about the opportunity to work more closely with our coaching staff to support a coaching culture that is focused on development and growth,” said Brooke. “Taking on tasks that will support our student athletes in a fun, competitive, and spirited athletic program is a challenge that I’m extremely psyched about.” said Brooke.
People Who Make Millbrook, Millbrook Leading the Way:
BOARD OF TRUSTEES NEWS
Thank You For All That You’ve Done For Millbrook
SEAN MCMANUS P ’18, ’20
After five years of loyal and outstanding service to Millbrook School as a trustee, Sean retired from the board this past summer. Sean brought needed skills to Millbrook’s Board of Trustees—foremost being thoughtful leadership and collaboration—and Millbrook is fortunate to have had his voice around the board table. Sean continues his work as chairman of CBS Sports, which he cited as a reason to step down at this time. His travel schedule is especially grueling—particularly in the fall with NFL Football.
Sean served on Millbrook’s School Life Committee, and his attendance at board meetings was very impressive despite his career and family responsibilities. He went above and beyond to make Millbrook connections everywhere, including with longtime lead anchor James Brown on CBS’s The NFL Today show. Mr. Brown recorded a free day announcement for Millbrook students in 2018, which remains one of the most widely applauded videos on the school’s social media channels.
Sean and his wife, Tracy, are the proud parents of Maggie ’18 and Jackson ’20.
Introducing Millbrook’s Newest Board Members
STEVE RODGERS P ’24, ’25
Elected May 2022
While president of the board at New Canaan Country Day School, Steve Rodgers came to learn quite a lot about Millbrook School through then fellow New Canaan trustees Sean McManus P ’18, ’20 and Drew Casertano. As Steve and his wife, Kristen, discovered more about what makes a Millbrook education unique, they felt compelled to bring their oldest daughter, Ashley, to tour and interview.
Ashley knew immediately that she wanted to make Millbrook her home away from home, and she joined the Class of 2024. Younger sister Emily would follow in the Class of 2025. Steve says, “It is the community and culture of inclusion that made coming to Millbrook the absolute clear decision for us.”
Steve attended public school in his hometown of Rochester, New York, and then matriculated to Dartmouth College to study political science and government. After earning his undergraduate degree, Steve completed his MBA at Stanford University and then launched a career in investing. With nearly 25 years of experience, today Steve is a managing director of Morgan Stanley and a partner and head of healthcare investing at Morgan Stanley Capital Partners. As the newest member of Millbrook’s Finance Committee, Steve says his goal is to bring his “professional experience to bear on the long-term health and well-being of Millbrook School. I am impressed by the school’s financial management and well-disciplined fiscal planning, especially given the nature of competing priorities at schools.”
Steve has also joined Millbrook’s DEI trustee committee, excited about the school’s commitment to DEI initiatives and continuing development of school culture through devoted resources and time.
As a current member of the Morgan Stanley Investment Diversity Council, he hopes to share ideas from the business world that might be beneficially adapted to the Millbrook community’s needs.
JAMIE VITIELLO P ’23
Elected January 2022
“We fell in the love with the school, and we’re invested in Millbrook’s success.”
Jamie and his wife, Lara, were married in nearby Rhinebeck, New York, and, as a horse-loving family, have been longtime residents of Dutchess County. They often took trips to the Trevor Zoo when their two children, Mikayla ’23 and Kai (current student at Indian Mountain School) were younger, and in recent years, they moved to Silo Ridge Field Club in Amenia, just southeast of Millbrook’s campus. Mikayla came to Millbrook in the fall of 2020 after a difficult year of remote learning. They believed Millbrook would best provide a normal academic experience for one “in-between” year before she returned to her previous school post-COVID. By the end of her IVth form year, however, Mikayla was thriving academically and socially and had found “a real community without the negative social hierarchy typically found in high schools.” The Vitiello family was all in and constantly offering to contribute to all areas of school life.
After graduating as an English language and literature major from the University of Hartford, Jamie intended to apply to law school. But when his older brother called and asked for some summer help, Jamie’s career in tech was inadvertently launched. That summer job led to a decades-long partnership, as their startup, Vitech Systems Group, became a leading provider of software to insurance, retirement, and investment organizations. Since selling the majority of his ownership in the company, Jamie has been actively involved in government initiatives in Dutchess County, initially as an MTA commissioner and audit chair of the MTA and currently as the county's deputy civil defense coordinator. As a member of Millbrook's Development Steering Committee, Physical Resources Committee, and School Life Committee, Jamie hopes to put his business and volunteer experiences to work helping Millbrook continue to grow in ways that best serve current students, families, alumni, and those who live and work here, Millbrook’s faculty and staff.
A TRIBUTE TO AN ALUMNI TRUSTEE
Peter Moffitt Holbrook ’65
Surrounded by his family, Peter died at his home in San Francisco on July 13, 2022, following a brief illness. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Stephanie H. Wharton (Fifi), two daughters, Sandy Holbrook James ’86 (Geoffrey) and Tania Holbrook Croft (Bruce), and two granddaughters, Daphne and Lucie James. He is also survived by his brothers, John Holbrook and Honorary Millbrook Trustee David Holbrook ’56, and his numerous Millbrook relatives, including nephew and current Millbrook trustee Chris Holbrook ’82 and his wife, Alice ’82, grandnephews Cameron ’11 and Parker Holbrook ’14, and grandniece Ali Holbrook Smith ’12. He was pre-deceased by his niece, Lee Holbrook ’83. The Holbrook family was the driving force behind the Holbrook Arts Center, which was built in 2001.
Peter grew up in Bedford, New York, and attended Rippowam Country Day School and Millbrook and spent a year at Upper Canada College before enrolling at the University of Denver. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in history and moved with his wife and daughter to San Francisco in 1970. He subsequently began a long career in banking with Crocker National Bank, Wells Fargo, and the Pacific Bank. With success as a trust specialist, Peter was recruited to start the Trust Company at The First Republic Bank from which he retired as senior vice president.
Peter enjoyed the game of golf immensely, and he belonged to the San Francisco Golf Club and the Burlingame Country Club. He also spent untold hours at the Pacific Union Club with his many friends playing dominoes and cards.
Peter served as a Millbrook Trustee from 2003-2009 and was one of the school’s most loyal graduates. He was a member of the board’s Finance and School Life Committees. In so many ways, he continually made Millbrook a better place to live and learn. As a student leader at Millbrook, Peter was a prefect, quarterback on a successful football team, a member of the varsity basketball team, head of the school store, and a member of the Chapel Committee. Peter was a popular role model for the entire school community.
A celebration of Peter’s life was held in September at San Francisco Golf Club.
Alumni Volunteers
Here, we shine a spotlight on some of our alumni who give their time, their heart, and their experience in service to Millbrook. Their contributions and service to our school help us bring our mission to life.
CAPTAIN JAMES CANNON IV ’71
After graduating from Millbrook, Jim earned a degree in nuclear engineering and worked as a shift engineer at nuclear power plants in New York and Virginia. He went on to join the U.S. Department of Energy and then the National Nuclear Security Administration, working on nuclear non-proliferation projects in the former Soviet Union countries of Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Armenia, and Russia.
In 1983 he joined the Navy Reserve and served aboard a submarine repair ship in Scotland and later as an engineer aboard a cruiser and a destroyer based in Norfolk, Virginia, before retiring in 2013.
He has led an active life devoted to our country, and he also remains one of Millbrook’s most loyal subjects for the past half century. Jim has been an effective class agent, a frequenter of Millbrook receptions in Washington, D.C., and an attendee at most alumni weekends. This past June, he and classmate Henry Rust successfully gathered a large group of their peers for a 50th reunion celebration. His love for Millbrook is always apparent, whether while barnstorming the country and the world to reconnect with school friends or bringing his Millbrook golf bag to courses all over the globe. Jim has always answered the call to serve wherever he is most needed, and for that, we presented him with the 2022 Millbrook Alumni Volunteer Award.
Little Egg, Big He“art”
In July 2022, Millbrook School invited local neighbors to a special Trevor Zoo Friends event to raise awareness of a developing master plan in support of a more modern zoo. Eliza Glaister ’04, chef and owner of Little Egg catering, generously donated her time and services to create the event menu and prepare and plate the food. In planning for the event, Eliza worked to source ingredients from local farms like Slow Fox Farm in Rhinebeck and Stonewood Farm and Quattro’s Farm Market in Millbrook, all of which donated produce and other ingredients or offered a generous discount to support the event. Eliza’s creative menu, based in part on the continents represented by our zoo animals, included melon and feta, sun-dried tomato bruschetta, mini lamb meatballs with tzatziki, smoked salmon with lemon-pepper and caper-berry horseradish, charcuterie, and more. The event was a huge success, in great part due to Eliza’s time, talent, and attention to detail.
Her talent and interest in creative arts have been evident throughout her life. She earned her bachelor’s degree in ceramics from Savannah College of Art and Design before pursuing her culinary dreams and enrolling at the French Culinary Institute (FCI). After graduating from FCI in 2011, she began her culinary career in New York City, working at The Grey Lady and at Prune with Chef Gabrielle Hamilton and Chef de Cuisine Ned Baldwin. The key to making superb food became clear: cook with simple and quality ingredients.
Eliza describes her own food as multi-cultural, elevated comfort food. “Nothing too tricky, wild, or fancy. It’s elegant but nourishing and comforting in the end.” For the past seven years, Eliza has been her own boss as the exclusive caterer for the Leash Club on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. Concurrently, she is running the kitchen at Ten Mile Distillery in Wassaic, New York, creating menus and cooking for all distillery events and private parties held on premises. She also caters for a wide variety of private events, like the Dutchess Land Conservancy Road Rally and weddings throughout the Hudson Valley, working with a dedicated, local, all-female staff. Reviews from her clients and their guests have spread by word-ofmouth, building her culinary reputation broadly.
Eliza’s artistry is, simply, delectable, and we are grateful for her continued dedication to Millbrook School and the Trevor Zoo.
Fun Connections & Correlations:
• While a zooie in her IIIrd form year, Eliza snuck feeding mice out of the zoo in her pockets to save them by giving them a new home in her dorm room (until her neighbor’s mac and cheese packets were mysteriously disappearing).
• During COVID, Eliza was feeding 40-50 Dutchess County families weekly, preparing food out of her parents’ kitchen and having groceries delivered on an 18-wheeler. Morgan Whitridge ’11 contributed to her efforts, baking bread (the BEST sourdough bread, according to Eliza), while friends Mike ’06 and Alison (Blanksteen) Marsal ’06 donated produce and fresh honey from their local farm, which was managed at that time by Serena Whitridge ’06
• Millbrook friends and classmates have often jumped into action in Eliza’s kitchen over the years. Alex Wilson ’06 has been her grillmaster at large events, cooking meats and vegetables over 18’ of flames, and Nick Pandolfi ’04 rolled up his sleeves recently to assist at a large Manhattan party.
LIGHTING UP THE NIGHT
Conversations around lights for night games have been ongoing for a few years. In 2021 planning began in earnest, and as of mid-October, Millbrook’s turf field has on-demand lighting for practices, games, and other events leading into the evening hours. Four 80’ poles were installed, extending nearly 10’ into the ground, each topped with a light fixture consisting of 44 LED lights, providing more than 26,000 watts of illumination. Certainly, the lights make night games possible for sports like soccer, field hockey, and lacrosse, but the decision to add them was ultimately based on the additional benefits of flexibility and community-building.
Having lights provides flexibility in terms of scheduling, particularly around daylight savings time when darkness begins to settle in as early as 4:30 p.m. As it gets darker earlier in the Hudson Valley, we are now able to run later practices or play games that begin later in the day and better ensure our athletes’ safety. Also, when inclement weather prohibits certain teams from practicing on their grass fields, a well-lit turf field allows multiple team practices stacked one after another until after dark. “It creates a whole different dynamic and allows us to better care for our grass fields while also keeping needed practices for varsity athletes,” says Director of Athletics Vinnie Sorriento ’98.
A well-lit turf field is beneficial beyond guaranteeing practices and games; it helps bring our community together and enhances shared campus experiences. Two night games this fall—Girls Varsity Soccer vs. Berkshire and Boys Varsity Soccer vs. Cheshire—saw a majority of students and faculty turn out to cheer on their home team, and lacrosse teams will generate the same excitement in the spring. Already, Millbrook’s Student Life Office is illuminating the field on weekends to run recreational games and activities into the evening hours, and they are making more expansive plans to use the turf for all-school events like Winter Weekend.
As we begin to plan over the next year for major renovations to the Mills Athletic Center and programming tied to health and wellness, fitness, and community-building, our fields, including the potential for an additional turf field, will continue to be an important part of the conversation.
The Tradition of The VIth Form Gift
Millbrook’s Class of 2022 was so replete with high achievers in academics, athletics, and leadership that it’s no surprise the VIth form gift set new records in terms of funding and parent participation.
Co-chaired by Bill and Betsy Curtis and Kevin and Barbara McLaughlin, the campaign to fund the Class of 2022 Terrace was a true labor of love. More than ever, outdoor spaces at Millbrook are integral to life on campus. “Creation of the outdoor dining area was so key to Millbrook’s successful navigation of the pandemic,” said Mr. Curtis, “that we knew it would always be a special place and continue to be used.”
Mr. Curtis credited the diligence and persistence of Millbrook’s Development Office with getting the campaign off to a fast start and following-through to keep Class of 2022 families connected and motivated. The Curtis and McLaughlin families kicked in 25% of the funding goal during a cocktail party held during Fall Parents Weekend and encouraged others to call the Development Office directly instead of waiting to be asked. Their momentum never faded, and the pledge goal was exceeded. “The terrace is a wonderful legacy for the Class of 2022 to leave to the school, and
it will be a place to gather for many years to come,” said Barbara McLaughlin. “Thank you to everyone who helped make this possible—and we do mean everyone since there was such overwhelming participation!”
The Class of 2022 was especially spirited and closeknit, and their cohesive group dynamic translated to great success for the campaign. Expressing his hopes
for Millbrook’s future, Mr. Curtis emphasized the importance of continuing to raise funds for capital improvements and for technological advancements in education. “Keep pushing the boundaries,” he said, “keeping in mind that there’s so much about the school that is exactly right as it stands. The timeline of Millbrook is infinite.”
CLASS OF 2019
The tradition of a VIth Form Parent Fund was launched many years ago.
In this fundraising event, parents of our graduating class work closely with members of Millbrook’s Development Office to leave a lasting legacy for their children. The most recent gift, The Class of 2022 Terrace, is on the north side of Casertano Hall, an extension of the beautiful dining room that looks out on cultivated and colorful farm. Recent class gifts that remain in tribute to Millbrook graduates include the Class of 2013 Terrace outside the Barn, Class of 2014 Bridge at the entrance to campus, the Class of 2015 Stairway to the Holbrook Arts Center and Hamilton Math & Science Center, the Class of 2016 Amphitheater, the Class of 2017 Cupola in Casertano Hall, the Class of 2018 Meeting Room in Prum Hall, the Class of 2019 Throne and Class of 2020 Commencement Walkway on Flagler Quad, and the Class of 2021 Courtyard within the walls of Prum and Casertano halls.

Pulling Circle: BETTER BY DESIGN
The repositioning of Pulling House and the addition of Anthony House to Pulling Circle grew out of master planning completed several years ago, a collaboration between trustees, faculty, administration, architects at Voith & MacTavish, and Millbrook’s own talented architect Gil Schafer ’80. There was an understanding that the least served constituency in terms of buildings has been alumni, who have not had a singularly devoted space on campus. In erecting Anthony House, we acknowledge the importance of our alumni body and how the school is serving their needs. By placing Anthony House on Pulling Circle, we honor and recognize our alumni in the very heart of our campus and provide a uniquely Millbrook space for them, including a terrace overlooking the zoo pond, perfect for community gatherings.
Trustee Chris Holbrook ’82, P ’11, ’12, ’14, chair of Millbrook's Physical Resources Committee, shares his thoughtful perspective on the very intentional design of Pulling Circle. “I was not aware of the effect of architecture on Millbrook’s campus when I was a student. But there was a heart to the school, and to me that was Pulling Circle, the oldest part of campus with such beautiful black locust trees. In retrospect, as I started to spend more time as a member of the Board of Trustees beginning in 2000, I started looking at the campus through very different eyes and recognized how Pulling Circle encompasses so much of what makes Millbrook, Millbrook. The barn/farmhouse vernacular is very homey and welcoming. Then there is the classic Georgian architecture, characterized as more academic, in Prum, Harris, and now Anthony House. There is a tension between these two styles, and upon arrival on Pulling Circle, you instantly get a sense of interplay between academics, student life, and the school’s core values, including a commitment to stewardship of the environment. There is a great amount of work that has been done in the last decade—reimagining the Barn, repurposing Prum to a girls dorm and meeting space, extending the north side of the Barn to create a new counseling center and business office space, and now building a new home for alumni, Anthony House. When people return to campus, they will look around and think that Anthony House has always been there as part of the circle.”
Thank You CLASS AGENT
A heartfelt thank you to the Millbrook class agents for their dedication to supporting and shaping the Millbrook experience of today through volunteer and fundraising activities.
