Development Report

It is indeed a pleasure for us to report another successful and productive year for Millbrook School and the development team. We are delighted and grateful to again acknowledge the loyal generosity of an ever-increasing number in the Millbrook family in 2012-2013. Along the way you helped the school to another record year in the Annual Fund, which totaled nearly $1.7 million. We owe a huge debt of thanks to all who participated and led the charge in this vital effort to maintain a balanced and healthy annual operating budget. One particular highlight was the special effort of the 2013 sixth form parents, who collectively contributed $250,000 to name the new terrace attached to the west side of the Barn in honor of their graduating sons and daughters. We are proud and thankful that 97% of the senior class parents joined to make this effort enormously successful. Overall, gifts to Millbrook this past year amounted to $7,342,000, the highest total in Millbrook’s history. The emphasis centered on the school’s capital priorities in the bricks and mortar and endowment areas. With the renovation of the Barn and the squash court expansion completed, the focus has turned to construction of the new girls dormitory and to upgrading and enhancing the main entrance to the school. Additionally, gifts to endowment have boosted that figure to just short of $30 million, which is the high water mark for Millbrook. All of this growth and development is occurring as the school plans for an enrollment of 300 in the years ahead. We remain committed to raise the capital required to meet the goals of the Student Life Master Plan, which, in addition to the many projects already completed and begun, include building a new dining hall and relocating and completing a new physical plant facility. This is an exciting time to be associated with Millbrook. Our dedicated colleagues and we look forward to continuing our partnership and shared dream with you to make Millbrook the very best school of its kind. Thank you again for your abiding trust and support.

ANNUAL REPORT 2012-2013 3

Dear Members of the Millbrook Family, This year marks my second year as chairman of the board of trustees and my 22nd year as a trustee. For seven years I was a Millbrook parent (I count three of my four children as fellow alums), and this summer I joined my class of 1978 classmates in celebrating our 35th reunion. I have seen Millbrook School from a number of different vantage points, through a number of different eras in its history and evolution, and with different leadership and faculty. Our school has never been healthier than it is today. It almost goes without saying that Millbrook School has benefited greatly from the leadership of Drew Casertano. But it is a message worth repeating loudly and often, for the success of the past two and a half decades starts and ends with Millbrook’s sixth headmaster. My fellow trustees share Drew’s ambitions for the school, and each of them knows firsthand or through their children the impact our school has had on the lives of young men and women. Drew is fortunate to be surrounded by senior administrators who possess longevity, passion for the institution, and expertise in many areas. We have a team of dedicated, caring and professional faculty that live the mission of Millbrook School daily and make it a reality. And most important of all, we are blessed with 280 students and their parents who truly value a Millbrook education. Last year we raised more than $7,300,00 thanks to your incredible generosity and support, and we are excited to have begun construction on the next phase in our Student Life Master Plan. We broke ground this fall on a new girls’ dormitory complex, and a new dining hall will follow in order to accommodate an increase in our enrollment to 300. This development supports our ambitions and will enhance our existing programs while allowing us to remain true to our mission. We are a powerful, intentional, and engaged academic community where adults and students forge meaningful relationships. We live in an environment where young adults can grow up by taking appropriate risks, knowing they will be celebrated when they succeed and supported when they inevitably fail. Guided every day by that mission, we exercise disciplined oversight over our budget and operations and think boldly and audaciously in support of maintaining the essence of what makes Millbrook, Millbrook. This work fills me with optimism, and our journey, while never complete, will be a successful one. I thank you for being such an important part of the collective Millbrook experience. Best regards,

William L. Menard

2013 Alumni Weekend

2013 Alumni Weekend On June 7th and 8th, alumni returned to Millbrook in record numbers to enjoy a weekend of celebration and reunion activities. Nearly 250 Millbrook alumni reconnected and golfed, lunched, dined, and danced with old friends and new. They reminisced about Millbrook as they remembered it, and they toured the newest facilities on campus including the beautifully renovated Barn. As much as things have changed they have remained the same, and Millbrook’s quintessential charm resonated for all in attendance.

The weekend began with milestone celebrations at special Friday night dinners for the 25th and 50th reunion classes. Saturday morning activities began bright and early with a traditional bird watching walk led by Jono Meigs ’65 followed by a zoo feed. Master classes in science, math, and the arts followed mid-morning, and Warner Gallery

Michael Winn ‘52 and Malcolm Barlow ‘53 led the 2013 Alumni Parade.

A terrific turnout for the class of 2003

Director Bill Hardy was joined by Caroline Whalen ’14, who expertly walked alumni through the Ron Haviv Exhibit, Testimony, she and her art history classmates had curated. After a luncheon and reception to honor Rick McWilliams’ 301st win for Millbrook soccer and his 37th year coaching, many alumni headed down to the athletic fields. Former soccer players vied for the ball during the Rick McWilliams Honorary Soccer Game, and others headed to the turf field to take part in the 4th Annual Mike Fuller Memorial Lacrosse Game. Some played in both! Others enjoyed relaxing in Schoolhouse and taking part in a wine tasting with Blair Collins Maus ’88.

2013 Alumni Weekend The traditional alumni parade into the Flagler Memorial Chapel was followed by special awards presented by Bob Anthony ’65. He proudly introduced three alumni who were being honored for their exceptional achievements and contributions. The Alumni Achievement Award was presented to Dr. Peter E. Jackson ’58, and Robert M. Otter ’93 was named an Edward Pulling Community Service Award winner. Alumni offered a standing ovation to Dr. Thomas E. Lovejoy ’59 as he accepted the Millbrook

Medal. Headmaster Drew Casertano concluded the Alumni Assembly with a brief update on the school, including the terrific progress being made on facilities improvements, including the plans to begin building a new girls dormitory. Jono and Jane Meigs have moved into new roles on campus as of September, and on the Saturday afternoon of reunion weekend, they were honored with a special celebration in the Chelsea Morrison Theater. Joined by their colleagues, former zooies and curators, and

family (including children Holly ’94, Bridget ’96, and Garrett ’00), Jono and Jane enjoyed a tribute by Dr. Alan Tousignant and a special video presentation of their colleagues’ reflections on their extraordinary careers at Millbrook and at the Trevor Zoo. In her remarks, Jane added up to nearly 100 cumulative years of service—and counting—the Meigs family has contributed to Millbrook. It truly was a reunion to remember, and we were delighted to welcome so many alumni back!

THE MILLBROOK MEDAL Dr. Lovejoy was honored for his continued association with and for his many contributions to Millbrook over the past 58 years. From the special citation presented to Dr. Tom Lovejoy ’59: After Millbrook launched Tom in 1959, he went on to earn his B.S. and Ph.D in biology from Yale. Dr. Lovejoy is now an internationally recognized champion for the conservation of biological diversity. Tom’s career has been rooted in public service and is considered a model for scientists interested in translating biological research into environmental conservation. As a result of Tom’s work, the world was alerted to the problems of tropical deforestation, the special demands on tropical conservation, and the importance of Amazonia as a cradle of biodiversity. Tom’s career has included leadership positions with the Smithsonian Institution, the World Wildlife Fund, and the World Bank. He co-founded the public television series Nature and served as its principal advisor for many years. Tom served as the president of the H. John Heinz III Center for Science, Economics and the Environment. Currently, he is a university

S p e c i al A w ards Edward Pulling Community Service Award Bob Otter ’93 was honored for extending the principles and the spirit of community service in his life beyond Millbrook. From the special citation presented to Bob: When Bob was a Millbrook student, he fully embraced and embodied the concept and philosophy of community service. A student leader and prefect in Prum Hall, a three sport varsity letter winner, and a senior zoo curator, Bob was respected and admired by peers and faculty alike. From his earliest days at Denison University in Granville, Ohio, Bob joined the student emergency response team and the Granville Fire Department. Bob took classes at the fire academy in Columbus during his junior year, and he earned his EMT and Fire certifications.

Following graduation, Bob continued his volunteer work and training in the communities where he lived while he pursued a sales career. Settling with his wife, Lee, in Granville, Ohio, Bob joined the Granville Fire Department and quickly rose up through the department’s volunteer program to achieve the highest civilian rank of captain. According to his fire chief, Bob is the best combination of character, skill, and enthusiasm. Bob Otter lives and breathes Millbrook’s motto: Non Sibi Sed Cunctis (“Not just for oneself, but for all”).

Alumni Achievement Award Dr. Jackson was honored for his dedicated work, discovery, innovation, and entrepreneurship, and for helping to improve the quality of other peoples’ lives. From the special citation presented to Dr. Peter Jackson ’58: The sciences have played a prominent role in the education of every Millbrook student for the past 82 years. Master teachers have encouraged promising young scientists to pursue their dreams in their respective areas of interest. As a result, a number of alumni have gone on to study in graduate schools in various disciplines including but not limited to ecology, environmental studies, medicine (both human and veterinary), zoology, engineering, and information technology.

Dr. Peter Jackson ‘58 was awarded Millbrook’s first Alumni Achievement Award

Dr. Jackson is a noted longtime telecommunications and Internet expert. A graduate of Duke University, where he met his future wife, Judy, Peter earned his doctorate degree in electrical engineering at Duke as well. Dr. Jackson enjoyed a long and distinguished career working at Bell Laboratories, Northern Telecom, Southwestern Bell Technology Resources, DSC Communications, and Qualcomm – all the while on the cutting edge of telecommunications, including satellite and cellular communications research. In the 1970’s Dr. Jackson worked on the Department of Defense project ARPA network or “ARPANET,” which evolved into what is today’s Internet. Dr. Jackson developed the mathematical underpinnings for the first digital network. And at Qualcomm, Dr. Jackson was instrumental in developing the Globalstar system, which became the only successful global satellite mobile system that supports communications anywhere on land or sea.

2013 Alumni Weekend

Tributes Rick McWilliams A large contingent of alumni soccer players, faculty members, close friends and competing coaches, gathered at a luncheon to honor Rick McWilliams’ 37-year coaching career at Millbrook and his 301 wins on the soccer field over that period of time. Headmaster Drew Casertano presented the following tribute:

9

We all know that Rick’s eyesight is poor. Poor, that is, except when he’s scanning the pitch, teaching his boys. Then he has the vision of an eagle. He anticipates the 2v1. He knows that the players’ spacing isn’t quite right, or the goalie is off his angles. He understands and sees soccer with exceptional clarity. More important, he sees when a young man needs to work harder, have more discipline, be more humble, when a young man needs a pat on the back or the chance to vent or some sage advice. Rick sees when the team needs to laugh to lighten the mood or to focus to regain its form and intensity. Rick is Millbrook soccer. He is a winner. His 301 victories are ample evidence of that. So too are his four New England championships, with three in the last four years. Today we acknowledge that remarkable success. We honor Rick because of what he sees in students, because he is an extraordinary teacher.

Commencement 2013 Millbrook moments happen every day, and commencement is the time when we celebrate the culmination of our best traditions, classroom experiences, hard-fought wins, meaningful contributions, and deep connections formed during our time here. The Prize Night and Commencement ceremonies in 2013 brought those moments into clear focus as we honored all that our graduates had achieved. Celebrations began on Sunday evening as the new Barn terrace was dedicated in honor of the Class of 2013. Parents, seniors and their advisors then gathered to break bread one final time together under the tent on Pulling Quad. During Prize Night the entire school gathered to recognize the VI form class before the faculty and seniors gathered in the chapel for the Last Night ceremony. Commencement Day was again a family affair as underform classmates, faculty, staff, alumni, and family members were on hand to celebrate this milestone with the class of 2013. Nancy Hathaway, head of school at Dutchess Day School, delivered sage

advice during her Commencement Address, encouraging the graduating class to work hard, and Haley Harckham delivered the Sixth Form Commencement Address, having been elected as class speaker by her peers. She stressed the importance of every unique Millbrook moment and reflected on her own meaningful interactions with faculty, tremendous academic opportunities, and a number of “only-at-Millbrook anecdotes” that shaped her experience. Immediately following the Commencement program, faculty formed what is now called the “cry line” in front of Schoolhouse, as graduates said their goodbyes before officially turning the page on their Millbrook careers and beginning the next chapter of their lives.

Senior Profiles

Ashlyn Kang Summa Cum Laude Hometown: Seoul, Korea College Attending: Johns Hopkins University Intended Major: Pre-medicine From the minute Ashlyn stepped on campus as a III former, she demonstrated grit, persistence, and a dogged determination to succeed. And that she did. She speaks three languages, is an accomplished student in the sciences, the humanities, and the arts, and earned the highest academic honor in the class of 2013, Summa Cum Laude. She began in the Johns Hopkins pre-med program this fall and is excited about the opportunities ahead, including working in a research lab and getting hands-on experience with real doctors and real patients as early as her sophomore year. She believes that she already has a leg up on some of her Johns Hopkins classmates, as her Millbrook teachers encouraged her to always be curious and ask questions. “Curiosity is the most important thing I have taken away from my time at Millbrook because college is a place where you have to find answers to questions on your own. If you don’t inquire, you don’t learn.” While biology is her passion, one of her favorite classes at Millbrook was AP English with Mr. Zeiser. In her Expository Writing class these days, she thinks outside the box and is ever conscious of improving her writing skills thanks to Mr. Zeiser’s in-depth analysis of written work and excellent class discussions.

16

Millbrook School

Yan “Kevin” Wang Hometown: Shanghai, China College Attending: Boston College Intended Major: math or science An extremely effective dorm leader in Burton during his VI form year, Yan led by quiet example, and he was well-liked by students and faculty alike. In the classroom he excelled and embraced the most challenging coursework possible – a perfect example of this was the 17-page paper he wrote on nuclear fusion and fission, when only 5 pages were required. He proved that his talents extended into the arts, as he showcased last year his magnificent voice when he performed solo and with other students during assemblies and international week; his beautiful rendition of a Chinese folk song earned thunderous applause. Yan’s stellar academic record also earned him high praise and Cum Laude during the 2013 Commencement Exercises. Now in his freshman year at Boston College, Yan is looking forward enthusiastically to the next step in his life’s journey.

Commencement 2013

Senior Profiles

Morgan Davis Hometown: Washington Crossing, PA College Attending: Colgate University Intended Major: English

Elli Case-Pethica Hometown: Woodstock, NY College Attending: Wesleyan University Intended Major: Studio Art plus English or Anthropology Given the chance to observe Elli’s work in the art department during her time at Millbrook, one could assume that art was her calling. But her advisor, Steve Siktberg, notes that “Elli loves to learn and is genuinely interested in the subject matter of every class she takes. Her prize-winning Blaine essay and her crossdisciplinary CES project merging art and biology are evidence of that.” Elli’s plans for her first semester at Wesleyan are further proof, as she is excited to visit an archaeological site with her paleoanthropology class, and she plans to contribute to the school newspaper, The Argus, just as soon as they start accepting new writers. She will pursue a major in studio art and will minor in anthropology or English, and she will continue to stretch herself by joining the crew team to compete in their regattas. She believes that Wesleyan is a perfect fit since the other students are “super passionate about their interests,” but she does admit to having a leg up on many of the other freshman. “Many of my friends feel really uncomfortable going to office hours and are unsure when or how to do that, but extra help [at Millbrook] really showed me the ropes with that!” While she misses the discussions and “immense amount of focus” in Mr. Zeiser’s AP English class and being in class with Mr. Powers and Mr. Hardy, Elli is confident that everything they taught her will take her far.

A three-sport varsity athlete, a dorm leader, and a top student, Morgan challenged herself with tough classes like AP English, AP Calculus, advanced science, and multiple history classes, and to each of these, she brought determination, commitment, curiosity, and an impeccable work ethic. She is now bringing her fierce determination in the classroom and on the soccer field to the next level at Colgate University. She is looking forward to balancing both the rigor of her academic life with a challenging athletic schedule. While majoring in English and focusing on becoming a successful student of literature and writing, Morgan is also excited about the opportunity to help the Colgate Raiders bring home the Patriot League championship for their second year in a row. She will have a full plate competing at the Division 1 level while focusing on her priorities in academics and believes that Millbrook taught her valuable time management skills: “I know when to socialize and when to buckle down and focus on my academics. I already see myself studying from 8-10 p.m. every night.” She hopes to have an English teacher that truly enriches class discussions, like Mr. Zeiser did in her AP English class. “The discussions on our books were heated and intense - but they were intellectual and memorable.”

Emma Feitelson Hometown: Millbrook, NY College Attending: Hamilton College Intended Major: undecided

Caleb King Hometown: Hamden, CT College Attending: Wesleyan University Intended Major: Political Science and Government Caleb choose to attend Wesleyan University due its strong sense of community and diversity, and he looks forward to stepping outside of his comfort zone and trying everything Wesleyan has to offer in the classroom, in sports, and in extracurricular activities. This is not at all surprising since as a dorm leader, prefect, and varsity athlete at Millbrook, Caleb was involved in in all aspects of school life. He also recognized how his interactions with faculty and with students contributed to the development of important leadership and communications skills. Mr. Powers was one of many teachers who always pushed him to achieve more and to learn more, and in Anthropology Mr. Powers challenged his students to dig deeper, understand their subject matter thoroughly, and question everything. That has perhaps inspired Caleb to major in political science and government in college.

18

Millbrook School

Growing up at Millbrook and graduating just two years after her brother, Jonah, Emma follows in both her father’s and her brother’s footsteps as a student at Hamilton College. Jonah had his own reasons for choosing his father’s alma mater, and for Emma it’s all about feeling like Hamilton is the right community for her. Without core curriculum requirements, Emma will be able to pursue anything and everything, and with no major decided, she is excited about pursuing a wide variety of opportunities in challenging classrooms. Exploring opportunities and making good connections was a valuable lesson for Emma at Millbrook, both in the classroom and out. “I learned in Mr. Clizbe’s U.S. History class that although getting good grades is important, it’s much more beneficial to focus on understanding material and applying it to real life, rather than just memorizing answers for an exam. He taught us by topic rather than in chronological order, so that we could dig deeper and find the connections that are otherwise missed when history is discussed in a purely chronological fashion.”

Senior Profiles

Megan Ahern Hometown: Oswego, NY

Josh Webb Hometown: Sheffield, MA College Attending: University of Massachusetts, Amherst Intended Major: Mechanical Engineering A zooie for four years and head curator during his VI form year, Josh learned responsible habits day in and day out during his time at Millbrook. When not at the zoo, Josh could be found cruising down School Road on the skateboard he crafted himself, or playing one of his family-made ukuleles. With an admitted appreciation for math and the sciences, it was not a surprise when Josh made his decision to attend the Commonwealth Honors College at the University of Massachusetts to pursue a degree in mechanical engineering. He is excited about the opportunity to learn in the university’s fantastic facilities, and he hopes to have professors as passionate about their subject matter as advisor and science teacher Dr. T. was. “In Animal Behavior class I enjoyed going out in the field and observing the predictability and unpredictability of the world we live in.”

College Attending: Hamilton College Intended Major: Pre-medicine plus photography Megan’s advisor applauds her self-motivation, conscientious efforts in her schoolwork, and willingness to always take feedback and set the bar higher. A serious scholar, there is no doubt Meg will be successful in her academic endeavors at Hamilton College in Clinton, New York. With a beautiful campus and warm welcoming community, Hamilton really felt like home to Meg when she first toured their campus, as it is a perfect extension of her experience at Millbrook. A true scholar-athlete, Meg looks forward to playing both ice hockey and softball for the Hamilton Continentals. Still debating a specific academic track, she is considering a pre-med major while also pursuing her interests in the arts and, specifically, in photography. “Millbrook has really taught me how to be an independent thinker and how to pursue the things I want to achieve, while arming me with the tools to explore my passions.” She discovered many great role models at Millbrook, but credits her advisor, Mr. Mark Clizbe, for really paving the way for her success and for challenging her during her journey.

Storey Schifter Hometown: New York, NY College Attending: New York University Intended Major: Journalism, English, or Art History Storey is close to home at New York University, and she begins her freshman year exploring a possible major in journalism, English, or art history, with a minor in French. She will take full opportunity of NYU’s terrific internship opportunities in the city and possibly study abroad at one of NYU’s campuses in London, Paris, Shanghai, or Abu Dhabi. As she appreciates the diversity of Millbrook’s student body and the friends she made from so many countries, she looks forward to continuing to meet people from all over the world. Storey feels like she has an advantage going into college life, having lived away from home for three years in high school. And it was not just dormitory life that provided lessons, but the faculty who instilled in her responsibility and independence. She feels extremely well-prepared for the college classroom, as well, due to the challenging Millbrook curriculum. Mr. Hart’s U.S. History class, in particular, was always engaging, as his discussions were interesting and lively while his assignments were challenging yet fair. She hopes to have that balance of information, challenge, and interest in all of her college courses.

Gabe Fekete Hometown: Rhinebeck, NY College Attending: McGill University, Montreal Intended Major: International Management Having grown up and attended school through this VI form year in Dutchess County, New York, Gabe was ready for a new adventure in a completely new place. Attending McGill University in Montreal, Canada, he is enrolled in the Desautels Faculty of Management and pursuing an International Management degree. He plans to take advantage of every opportunity in order to get the most out of his time at college because, like at Millbrook, he knows four years will fly by quickly. During his time at McGill, he is hoping to have a professor much like Ms. Havard, who taught Gabe’s V form Honors English class. “Every day there was an ‘a-ha’ moment, and we studied topics and writers and areas of literature I never thought I would understand or enjoy. That type of eye-opening enlightenment, while remaining interesting and relevant, is what I hope to see more of in college.”

ANNUAL REPORT 2012-2013 23

New Girls Dormitory Opening September 2014 Millbrook’s campus has evolved tremendously over the past several years as facilities improvements have been made in almost every area of school life, and the school is continuing to develop in ways that are consistent with our mission and support our ambition to be the finest small, coeducational, college-preparatory boarding school in the country. To that end, our future holds an enrollment of 300 students and the implementation of these additional projects to support this growth: • a new girls dormitory, currently under construction on the west end of campus, to be completed during the summer of 2014 • a new physical plant facility • a new dining hall connected to Prum Hall via “Mainstreet Millbrook”

24

Millbrook School

Facilities

The dorm will house 44 boarding students and up to 24 day students on two floors. The main stair connects the large first floor twostory student lounge to the second floor hall and upper lounge. Highlights include: • spacious mud rooms • a hideaway kitchen for student use • a “phone booth” for private and emergency calls • bedrooms grouped in four clusters, each containing one single for a leader, five doubles, and one large shared bath • brightly colored and glassy bathrooms with iPod docking stations, cubbies and lots of mirrors • each bath also has a washing machine and two dryers

The dorm is designed and will be constructed to the highest environmental standards with a ground coupled heat source system, passive house standards for insulation, recycled materials, bamboo floors, and local sourcing for brick and roofs.

Campus Landscape Master Plan At Millbrook, we are planners. We have to be with all the progress and change we have accomplished and all we anticipate in the next phase of the school’s development. We have lesson plans, practice plans, a strategic plan, a campus master plan and, now, a landscape master plan.

In the mid-90’s, the school completed its first ever landscape master plan with Andropogon Associates. Fifteen years later, we felt the need to update the plan with attention paid to our needs for improved lighting, parking, signage, and campus paths, along with guidelines for tree replacement. After considering proposals and presentations from five landscape architects, the Physical Resources Committee of the board of trustees selected Stephen Stimson Associates of Cambridge, MA. Stimson’s commitment to green design and sustainable practice was a major factor in our decision. The first project is a new bridge just south of the Mill. This structure will be a major improvement functionally and aesthetically as a much larger culvert is designed to handle the flow of a hundred year flood, and the handsome country stone bridge will signal to all that they have arrived at our beautiful core campus. We are especially pleased that Larry Neufeld ’67, who worked with Jono Meigs ’65 to build the modern zoo, will be the stone mason for the bridge. Construction should be completed by the time this Annual Report is in your hands.

supremely interesting for Starsi, as the group traveled to Cairns, Australia, where they volunteered at Wooroonooran National Park and a wildlife center and refuge in Port Douglas. They worked with kangaroos, wallabies, snakes, koalas and an assortment of other Aussie animals including the very cool Cassuwary bird, a large, colorful, but dangerous bird, which has incredibly sharp claws. Her trip was capped off with the opportunity to earn her advanced scuba license as she completed 10-12 dives, including night dives in which she swam with sharks and many other colorful fish.

Classrooms Across the World

Our students are innovative thinkers and bold leaders, and we encourage them to pursue their brave ideas through genuine experiences. Here some of our students share their summer experiences. You will see that curiosity, integrity, respect, stewardship, and service extend far beyond the classroom walls at Millbrook, and that, in fact, our motto, Non Sibi Sed Cunctis, is truly being lived every day, even when school is not in session.

Starsi Howell ’15 spent part of her summer on a month-long adventure in Australia and Fiji through the Adventures Cross Country program. Living with a host family in a traditional Fijian village bure on Beqa Island, sleeping on dirt floors and showering in local waterfalls, Starsi felt as if she was truly a part of the family. “It was spectacular to learn about another culture and meet so many wonderful people.” She and the other 17 students in her group spent their time in Fiji teaching English to primary school children and helping to construct a footpath in the village. A dedicated zooie at Millbrook, the other half of the trip was

Ruojing Wang ’14 attended a two-week summer pre-college program at Marist College, where she focused on fashion design. She thoroughly enjoyed the program and the opportunity to make many friends with interests parallel to hers. “I had a chance to actually get a feeling of what it’s like to be in college, and I got to know what Marist has to offer if I end up pursuing my degree there. Marist has an especially strong fashion design program. Most of the faculty members have once worked in the fashion industry and have lots of experiences and connections.” Ruojing particularly appreciated the facilities, including one of the nicest sewing studios she had ever seen. During the program she designed fabrics and printed out samples of those fabrics with Marist’s fabric printer. “It was a great experience, and the program makes feel more certain about my love for fashion design and the potential of studying it in college.”

Summer Programs

Reid Kugler ‘14 spent his summer pursuing his interests and delving into sports medicine and psychology. Attending the Oxbridge Academic Program in Cambridge, England, he was able to craft his own academic program from many majors. An avid athlete who enjoys playing multiple sports, Reid decided to study sports medicine, having been injured and rehabilitated himself. “There are a lot of doctors in my family, and I am also really interested in the learning the psychology behind sports – the mental aspect of the game.” One of the best parts of this experience was that he was able to study with other students from all over the world. Even his teachers had traveled internationally from Croatia and Canada to be a part of this learning program. But it wasn’t all about academics. Reid was also able to play a variety of recreational sports including cricket, punting, and rugby, and he lived in a dorm on the campus of Jesus College, one of the oldest colleges in Cambridge and the very school where Isaac Newton had studied.

Ariana Montenegro ’16 spent her summer both learning and teaching in North and South America. In July Ariana volunteered at her primary school, P.S. 8 Luis Belliard in Washington Heights at the north end of Manhattan, a bi-lingual school that offers a Head Start program to students ages one-year through pre-k. She worked with the 2 to 4-year-olds in their daylong program, reading to them, taking them to the park, and helping the Head Start teachers in their classroom. For her it was a simple way to give back and create opportunities for younger students. While she grew up in Washington Heights, her family moved to the United States from Ecuador, and a trip there this summer offered the opportunity to not only reconnect with family but to also assist in classrooms there. Quito, her mother’s hometown, was their first stop, and Ariana worked with Ecuadorian professors and taught English to college-aged students: “I helped with translations and answered their questions, and they would repeat phrases after me. We learned a lot from each other.” She was also a student in Ecuador, practicing her Spanish writing skills and digging into a chemistry course. Ecuador became her classroom as she explored her family’s culture, visiting Incan areas in El Centro del Mundo (the middle of the world) and Riobamba.

Ramapo when they were in college, and after Casey’s first summer there in 2012, she decided that she would pursue a career in speech pathology and work with kids with autism. Her commitment to this career path was cemented during Intersession 2013, as she had organized a weeklong intersession at the Anderson Center, a home for autistic children and teenagers. Her Culminating Experience for Seniors (CES) will also focus on autism. “It’s so crazy and rather exhausting while you’re there, but in the best possible way. Every difficult moment is so, so worth it. You know it means the world to them that they are getting this attention and care.”

Delaney Bailey ’14 has danced since the age of two, and training with the Rockettes at Radio City Music Hall this summer was a dream come true. Auditions for the Rockettes Summer Intensive took place in February in New York City. Hundreds of girls from all over the world learned jazz and tap combinations, demonstrated their double pirouette, and showed off their best Rockette kicks during the audition. It was not until school had ended that Delaney found out she had been chosen to attend, and two weeks later she was in New York City at Radio City Music Hall dancing 8-9 hours per day. Current Rockettes led technique classes, and the group of students learned three dances in the Rockette repertoire, over 10 minutes of choreography, in a single week. Having focused on the perfect arms, head placement, and, of course, the perfect line kicks, the week culminated in a performance at NYU Skirball Center for the Performing Arts. The dancers make it look effortless, but Delaney knows firsthand how difficult it really is: “Standing in line, you don’t touch the girls next to you, you are completely holding your own. Thirty-two kicks can be exhausting!”

Casey Murray ’14 was at Camp Ramapo for a second summer this year, working as a counselor for children with behavioral and development disabilities including those on the autism spectrum. With a camper population of 150-200, Casey was one of just as many counselors, and the 1:1 ratio allowed every counselor to be completely committed to each and every child. Her parents met at Camp

Mansell Ambrose ’14 had just 18 hours at home between her 137-mile NOLS trip on horseback in Wyoming and her service trip to India with nine other Millbrook students. Winner of the 2013 Founder’s Prize, Mansell selected this trip and rode with her group for two weeks on pack horses, mapping out a route through steep ravines and camping along the way. She and the others had only themselves to rely on, and every day was a different trail, as the group worked together to find the best inclines and the easiest routes for the horses to get to their final destination. That sometimes made for a much longer day than they had anticipated. India was a completely different experienced, as there Mansell and nine other Millbrook students relied on the guidance of Millbrook faculty members and other adults to guide their group through Mumbai, one of the largest cities in India. They stayed at an orphanage outside of Mumbai, working with the Deep Griha Society, spending much of their time at City of Child, a rural “boarding school” for 45 boys from difficult family circumstances. Living mostly in one large bunk room during their time there, they tutored boys in the evenings, planted bamboo, fruit trees, and coconut trees during the day, and visited the local elementary school to teach a craft, sing songs, and play games. It was certainly an exceptional summer for Mansell.

Katja Galli ’14 is planning on studying to be a minimallyinvasive cardiologist, so she was excited to enroll in the three-week summer biochemistry program at Brown University in Rhode Island. Classes ran everyday from 12:45-3:45, and Katja spent an average of three hours every night working on homework. She understood after the first few days why they had cautioned her against doing two programs at once, which was her original plan! The lab-intensive accelerated program was taught by a Brown professor and teaching assistant, and Katja, along with 11 other students in the exclusive program, spent three weeks learning about research techniques in bio-chemistry. They tested enzymes in lactate pills to determine the difference between a generic and

30

Glowing E. coli

other more costly brands. (There was none.) They sequenced the DNA of fish muscle, testing for specific proteins, and they learned the technique of micro-pipetting. Katja especially appreciated the opportunity to see firsthand ongoing research in Brown’s labs and gain experience in the lab itself. Appropriately suited up, she and the other students grew their own batches of E. coli and injected them with a glowing enzyme. How many teenagers get to do that?

Arthur Xiao ’15 experienced his second win this summer in an international robotics competition in the Netherlands. Three years ago, Arthur was one member of a Chinese team that competed in the international robotics competition in Singapore. As the programmer and the youngest member of the team, he played a key role in winning that championship. In this year’s Robo Cup Junior competition, Arthur was the oldest member of his team, and they competed once again in the Rescue A division, where rescue robots had to identify victims within recreated disaster scenarios, varying in complexity from line-following on a flat surface to negotiating paths through obstacles on uneven terrain. Arthur kept everything in check in his group, coordinating everyone’s efforts strategically and managing all logistics. Their 8” robot competed both in the regular and in the super team competitions. (Super team competition matched up the 5-person Chinese team with the Swiss team to compete against other similarly matched teams from around the world.) Now, Arthur is hoping to help Millbrook’s Engineering Club make great strides at a December competition at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in Troy, New York.

Jessie Ribera ’15 is a seasoned space camper, having attended Space Camp at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center for the past three summers. This was her second year in the Advanced Space Academy, a special 12-day program where participants study the engineering of rockets, space history, mission history, robotics, and

Summer Programs more. One of 14 members of the “Molly Brown” team, Jessie and her teammates competed against two other teams in both mini and major challenges: landing a simulated space shuttle, purifying soda (just as they might purify water in the ECLSS purification system in space), fixing machinery in neutral buoyancy, precision landing with a toy helicopter in a jet stream, and vying to win a Jeopardy-style Spacebowl competition, which challenged their knowledge of space history. The teams also practiced space missions, where they simulated launching into space and had to complete 30 checklists within 8 minutes. In a 24-hour mission the teams had to dock onto the international space station, complete a secret mission and launch a satellite, before undocking and then landing. Jessie enjoyed the neutral buoyancy training, as teams dove in a special 40-foot deep tank for 40 minutes at a time, tossing 100 lb. balls back and forth, and playing basketball with bowling balls. Ultimately, she loves learning about space and meeting other students from across the country and world who have similar interests.

Harrison ’15 and Liesje ’16 Bluestone combined learning and service components in a summer trip for a small contingent of Millbrook students and faculty. While Harrison initiated the idea, his mom, Sabrina Ackerman Bluestone ’82, was highly instrumental in making this summer adventure a reality, and she, along with faculty member Tom Brown, accompanied Liesje, Harrison, Kelly Spector ’15, and Archer Biggs-Chiropolous ’15 on the first Millbrook group ascent to the top of Mt. Kilamanjaro. A two-week trip, the climb took seven days altogether. Liesje felt challenged early on in the climb, as Harrison and Archer seemed to be having such an easy time of it. By the time they were on the way back down, everyone was so ready to be back on flat ground, they pushed through the last part of the descent in one day rather than in two days as originally planned. One night in a hotel in Arusha provided a brief respite from sleeping in tents and sleeping bags, but then the group began their five-day safari, witnessing many cool things including lions on the hunt for wildebeest. (They ultimately feasted on their prey.) They came across a huge variety of animals in their natural habitat, including three cheetahs, perched

nonchalantly on a rock, a large herd of elephants, and a magnificent rhinoceros. Besides facing the physical challenges, Harrison and Liesje appreciated the opportunity to truly connect the earth and the animals, removed from modern life to a point where they did not even have to think about connecting to others electronically.

Miles Messinger ’14 enjoyed a very hands-on learning opportunity this summer in his hometown of New York City. Working for Cuttita LLP, a small law firm in the midtown Manhattan, Miles assisted the partners in their daily business, helping to write up wills, change leases, answer calls, send letters, assist with general real estate issues, and more. Miles became aware of this opportunity through the Mt. Batten Institute, an organization dedicated to fostering work experience and cultural exchange for students and young professionals, and he sought out an internship that would be interesting and provide good life experience. Having never worked in a law firm before, Miles believed an internship would, at the very least, provide him a reference point for a potential future career. “I learned a lot about real estate law and what it’s like to work in an office from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.” While it was interesting and “solid” work, Miles is leaning towards pursuing a career in business management and hopes to eventually run his own company.

Laurel Stine ’15 had traveled before to Japan with her family, but this was her first experience traveling alone to attend a 5-week language intensive program. The Kudan Institute in Tokyo, Japan offered Laurel the opportunity to live with a host family and participate in many out-ofthe-classroom activities that provided terrific insight into Japanese culture. Every other afternoon her group traveled to different locales in and around Tokyo, culminating with a climb to the top of Mt. Fuji at the end of the program. “The view was incredible. It felt like you were standing on the wings of an airplane, as you could see the clouds next to you. I wanted to stop and look around, but I wanted to reach the top even more.” She made what is normally a six-hour climb in only three hours! Laurel found that she picked up the language very quickly, and she was acutely aware of abiding by cultural norms, not wanting to unintentionally offend others in such a polite society with very strict rules. Perhaps her favorite part of the experience was the food – “There is an art to every food item, even fast food. But my favorite meal was at Kondo Tempura, where we were able to watch the chef prepare and personally present our food. There were layers of flavors, temperatures, and textures – almost overwhelming to your taste sensory!”
