SAX IMPEY THE LIGHT AND THE VEIL
The Light And The Veil
In a nebulous chancy realm of mist and fog, wet eyes str aining in the moisture laden air, perceiving dim and dangerous shapes, por tents and wr aiths, r ivulets of light on eye , and which wor ld are they in, and which wor ld are we in now. Perception and imagination create this wor ld in equal measure , outside of time and place , our small circle within the fog. Stor ies tell of the fog that tr aps, of doomed ships still sailing in that other wor ld - this becomes, easily, remar kably, an unfanciful idea within the grey veil. Sail on, sail on. An eventual lightening, a glimmer, a breaking through, and a clear ing one hundred million scintillating droplets give for m to air, shining like cobwebs in a spar kling dew Idly musing on the par ameter s and possibilities allowed by this str ange attr actor, as a sphere of (mostly) bur ning hydrogen some 8 light minutes distant throws its dancing light upon these shifting water s Sax Impey

BIOGRAPHY Sax Impey was bor n in Penzance , Cor nwall in 1969. He completed a BA(Hons) Fine Ar t at Newpor t in 1991 and retur ned to Cor nwall in 1994. Since 2005 he has produced wor k der ived almost exclusively from exper iences at sea. A qualified RYA Yachtmaster, he has sailed many thousands of nautical miles deliver ing yachts at sea in many par ts of the wor ld. ‘The Light and the Veil’ is based upon specific exper iences encountered dur ing a sea voyage off the Iber ian Coast in 2011. Impey’s extensive tr ips at sea have had a profound impact on his life and subsequent development as an ar tist. Reconnecting to nature through this powerful element has the almost inescapable effect of calling to question some of life’s existential questions. This epiphanic moment of realisation, of revelation, is at the core of Impey’s oeuvre . Reflecting on and captur ing per sonal moments and making them univer sal, Impey’s wor k reaffir ms the impor tance of introspection and confrontation, found specifically when sur rounded by the natur al wor ld; “A mind can breathe , and obser ve , and reflect, away from the shr ill desper ation of a culture that, having for gotten that it is better to say nothing than something about nothing, invents ever new ways to fill ever y single space with less and less.” Sax Impey has occupied no.8 Por thmeor Studios since 2003, par t of an histor ic studio complex over looking Por thmeor beach in St Ives. He has been exhibiting with Millennium Galler y since 2002, where he has continued to have major solo exhibitions. In 2007 his wor k was selected for the ‘Ar t Now Cor nwall’ exhibition at the Tate St Ives where he was placed on the cover of the associated publication, the same year he was her alded in The Times as one of the ‘New Faces of Cor nish Ar t’. In 2010 Impey featured in the Owen Sheer s, BBC4 Documentar y ‘Ar t of the Sea (In Pictures)’ alongside Anish Kapoor, J M W Tur ner, Mar tin Par r and Maggie Hambling among other s. In 2012 he was elected an Academician of The RWA. Whilst maintaining a solo studio pr actice Impey has also engaged in numerous collabor ative projects, including film, theatre , perfor mance and installation wor ks. His paintings are in numerous collections including The Ar ts Council, Warwick Univer sity, The Connaught Hotel and other pr ivate collections wor ldwide .
