You are

Miller Four years have passed since Miller was born but there is something that has never changed and that is the eagerness with which we began. This eagerness continues being what drives us to continue creating specific products for each rider and modality. During these years, we have learnt a great deal with our team of riders, collaborators and artists, clients and friends, adjusting ourselves to meet their needs at each moment. Our motto continues to be the same: “YOU ARE MILLER. We still need you, your way of seeing things, of enjoying the little things in life, how you value each little detail, details that are important to us and encourage us to continue growing in everything connected to skateboards and this form of life we have chosen.

A legendary spot in Madrid

West Park The Paseo de Camoens is in the Parque del Oeste (West Park), a park located in Madrid, between the road towards La Coruña, the University City and the district of Moncloa. Back in the day, this area was the main rubbish tip of the city, but fortunately, in 1906 the authorities changed the use for it to be used and enjoyed by the inhabitants of Madrid. It then became a place for walks and rest, a green area that, with the passing of time, has become a place to escape from the city, meters away from the Madrid Historical Centre.

Fortunately for athletes, and in particular, for skaters and longboarders, in 2003, the City Council of Madrid approved cutting off the traffic on Paseo de Camoens and Calle Ruperto Chapí during weekends and bank holidays with the purpose of preserving this green area and offering an outdoor space close to the city centre. Skate and longboard riders did not go to this place much before 2006-2007, but after, and coinciding with the boom of longboard disciplines, no weekend or bank holiday went past without riders doing their tricks, dancing, practising slalom or simply carving away in this now legendary spot that the riders themselves have baptised as WEST PARK. The West Park is an ideal spot for riders of all levels because it has a first very large area with a slight inclination but sufficient to practice slalom, dancing, carving or freestyle. A more prominent downward slope follows this, with four bends for those seeking stronger sensations and more speed and skids. This more prominent area is ideal for fast carvings. The best thing about it is that it is surrounded by trees and green areas that help you forget about being in such a bustling and stressing city, like Madrid. Many are the riders that have visited this incredible spot and did their little bit to give it more standing

and acknowledgement. Many renowned riders like Ra, Quique, Jabirras, Marjetes, Jörge and Bea (lachicadelacurva), the Caribbean family, Álvaro Rivas, Ricardo Damborenea (RD), Red (40sk8), Javi and Dany Navarro (Javiboards), Sergio, Willy, Jaime (Roadrider), David (Nothink), Sophie and many more that gathered there on Sundays to share something as simple as a hobby, to feel the wind on their faces and in short, be children again, have ridden down its asphalt. The best thing about this is that we will never be able to forget this spot now thanks to the efforts of photographers and filmmakers like Gordon Dionne (MyProfe), Alberto Alepúz (PERROPRO) and Juan Rayos, who have portrayed both the magic and the riders of this spot in many of their photos and videos. In particular, MyProfe has also been taking photographs of practically every rider that has ridden the asphalt at WEST PARK each Sunday since 2009. So, if you have skated on this spot, it is very likely that you have been caught on his camera. Juan Rayos and Perropro have also delighted us with the most cinematographic or documentary side of this spot in some of their videos. Thank you for this!

Also, the WEST PARK has hosted several skate and longboard events and, in some cases, has brought together more than 500 people united by a piece of wood with a pair of trucks and four wheels. Some examples are the 1 st Spanish Slalom Championship, the International Longboard Day or events like the Noche en Negro and El Patín más Rustiko. Do not miss this spot in spring and summer, because in these times of the year, skating sessions begin in the morning and do not cease until sundown with a picnic in-between, much laughter and a unique atmosphere. SURF & SKATE CAMPS The new summer camps By Iván García Arozamena

waves, to learn how to skate and to perfect the positions or correct bad postures on land, which would otherwise be harder to achieve in the water. Skate camps are also more and more common; a safe and fast way of learning and meeting new friends at the same time. An example of a skate camp is RIDERLAND in Chiclana, Cadiz, in the south of Spain, captained by José Panes (PITU), an all-time skater.

Photo: Rocio Muriel

One day, he realised that what he did best in the world was skate and share his experiences with new skaters. Seeing the skate parks full of children skating and learning as best they could, it was very clear to him: He was going to open a skate camp! At the same time, our friend “Captain Jairock” mentioned the project and the possibility of giving Pitu a hand. After this, everything came easy and the RIDERLAND school/camp is now a reality, not to mention one of the best valued by students, parents and skaters that visit it. We are strongly committed to new generations and anyone that steps onto a skateboard for the first time. This is the reason Miller Division actively collaborates with a great number of skate and longboard associations and schools, as well as surf & skate camps from day one. Providing the necessary material and everything they can to give many children the opportunity of skating or learning about the skate, who would otherwise find it hard.

Photo: “Los Locos” Surf School

Lately and especially in summer, surf schools, surf camps and skate camps are really easy to come across. They have become part of our environment and daily life, but this was something nearly unimaginable until not so long ago. Surf and skate were minority sports and everyone learnt as best they could. All this has changed now; the number of riders has increased and the amount of people wanting to learn has led to the success of all these schools and camps.

Who does not remember their first ollies or their first skid? The sensation of happiness lasted all day! At Miller, we would like to continue seeing those beaming faces!!! These sensations and what the children transmit is what leads us to support schools, associations and camps.

These camps and schools have also begun to teach longboard skate courses and hold activities, for when there are no Photo: “Los Locos” Surf School

Every detail counts Edges, concaves, wheelbites...

At Miller, we know the importance of every single component of a longboard: board, trucks, wheels, bearings, sandpaper, concave, etc. as well as the benefits every improved detail can offer. That’s why we adapt each improvement to each modality or use as much as possible, ensuring that everything fits perfectly.

Edges ROUNDED EDGE

Drop lowered

ROUND SQUARE EDGE

SQUARED EDGE

This shape of the board is designed so that the gravity center is lower to achieve more stability.

SUPER SQUARED EDGE

Contribute to the traction of the foot to the board. More rounded edges free your feet (dancing, freestyle) and, conversely, more squared edges have a better grip (freeride, slide.. ).

Countersink trucks By countersinking the trucks the screws are flush to prevent you from stumbling if you move your feet to the nose or tail of the board..

Wheel wells Concave at the height of the wheels, to achieve an added space between the wheels and the board. With this, we prevent the feared wheelbites, a guide to know where your feet are and a better grip on heels and pointer.

Rock finish Rock finish (worn effect) to make the wheels skid from the first day.

Concaves EXTRA-LIGHT CONCAVE

LIGHT CONCAVE

MEDIUM CONCAVE

MEDIUM-HIGH CONCAVE

DOUBLE CONCAVE

The different concaves fit with each model, to adapt to the modality for which each longboard has been designed. A subtle concave allows moving freely on the longboard (dancing, cross step, etc.), while a medium to high concave grabs the foot to the board better (slide, freeride, etc.). We also have the double concave that helps adjusting the foot to the maximum for a more ergonomic grip (freeride, downhill).

12

Grip and design, all in one

We have visually enhanced the form of the grip tape on some of the models with the intention of introducing graphics on the upper side of the longboards.. Stylish on the top and bottom.

Seismic Wheels

Founded back in 1992 and based in Boulder, Colorado, Seismic Skate Systems is one of the oldest longboard brands. The company designs and manufactures the wheels that have achieved more podiums at the highest level. Using the most advanced materials and engineering technologies to radically improve the riding experience of all elite riders who are looking for the highest performance.

The Hot Spot, possibly the fastest wheel in the world, is the wheel that the skater, Mischo Erban, who holds the Guinness World Record and IGSA Record of 130.08 MPH, uses. Its argument is simply to provide the urethane formula with more grip and rebound, with lower resistance to rolling than any other formula on the market. In addition, its core with Hub technology makes these wheels surprisingly lightweight and with a greater acceleration, the most versatile Seismic wheel around. Miller, as the champions of the world do, trusts in the Seismic wheels.

Return On Pressure Its zebra bamboo plies and its two layers of fiberglass make this longboard a true spring, thanks to its flex, ready to accelerate the return energy of each turn.

BAMBOO

FIBERGLASS

ZEBRA BAMBOO

FIBERGLASS

If you are looking for a longboard for cruising, pumping or carving, this will be your best ally.

BAMBOO

Bamboo makes it flexible and very light. The two layers of alternately laminated fiber will provide the necessary resistance to flex again and again without losing its pop and original flex.

Xtreme Reverse King pin X.R.K.P

Your turns will have no limits with the new special geometry front xrkp trucks! Thanks to their extreme turning angle, superior to conventional rkp (reverse king pin) trucks, you will be able to do surprising turns, and at the same time, increase the pumping and a boost similar to when you carve on a wave. All this without contraptions, bearings, springs or useless pieces, reducing the weight and volume but increasing their useful life, because they hardly have any additional maintenance compared to traditional trucks with bushings. 13

CRUISER SERIES

Back in the 70’s, people used skates in a very different way. There were no major tricks and people simply did turns simulating being on

a wave. Nowadays, these types of skates, the smaller ones, are perfect for getting around fast and performing one or two old school tricks.

SURF SKATES SERIES

Surfing the asphalt has never been so easy. We present the new Surf Wheels collection by Miller. Feel total freedom to turn!! Thanks to its special geometry front trucks, the turning angle is higher compared to conventional trucks RKP (reverse kingpin). The back trucks (standard geometry) will give you the stability you need. Both trucks are also higher, so you don’t have to worry about the feared wheelbites. This enables

20

you to do surprising turns, and it also gives you pumping and a boost similar to when you carve on a wave. You won’t need to use your foot to gain impulse and you can even increase speed! All this without contraptions, bearings, springs or useless pieces, which reduces the weight and volume, and increases their useful life, because they hardly need any maintenance.

Mundaka A model inspired by one of the best lefthanders of the world with a sandy seabed located in the North of Spain. Carve, pump and successfully overcome any obstacle that comes your way with its front XRKP truck, its 30” single kick board and 70 mm wheels.

Hopi Kachina Collection Myths and legends

A

t Miller, we feel inspired by nature. This is why, in this new collection illustrated by the artist Pablo Burgueño “Cue”, we have wanted to honour a tribe that represents all the values for how they care for nature: The Hopi Tribe. The history of this tribe has left a very special footprint over the years in how they treat the living beings surrounding them and how they live in harmony with nature. The Hopi Tribe are natives of North America based in Arizona. They are the oldest known inhabitants of America. There are many myths and legends on their origin, but they know very well that they came to this planet from another world and they still conserve dolls or small figures with helmets and astronaut suits dating back over 2000 years from their old handicrafts. According to these people, these figures represented beings that came from the stars. These beings left, but promised to return, and made it clear to The Hopi Tribe that they were the custodians of a wisdom that must be transmitted to humanity. They pass this knowledge on by teaching people about nature, and how to live with it to keep a painstaking conservation of the planet Earth. They insist on treating all forms of life as sacred: animals, trees, vegetation, water, and the entire planet... They are aware of a universal plan for the creation and conservation of our beautiful world and have integrated this concept into their daily lives. The Hopi prophecies, written on two stone slabs that they have kept for over 10,000 years, gather an entire collection of instructions on how to live in peace and harmony with the universe. These slabs also warn us about what could happen

26

if we do not take heed. The Hopi Tribe has never ceased to warn us that we are at the last shaking of the earth. They call this era “ The Times of Transformation”, where we must live in harmony with the environment, with the Earth and with our neighbours. All the natural disasters could be minimised with a change of conscience, but if we don’t change, our civilisation will be condemned to disappear. The KACHINAS are ancestral spirits that are at the midpoint between gods and men, some with good powers and others with evil powers. These Kachinas are represented by colourful paintings, dolls with feathers, masks, dances and ceremonies. They intercede with the spirits of the other world on behalf of their Hopi brothers living on the Earth. They can bring rain; bountiful harvest and well-being provided the appropriate ceremonies are held, which usually consist of dramatised dances where they represent the personality of each Kachina making use of colourful masks. Many of these dances are carried out around a bonfire, in an environment with great fervour, music and fun due to its double meaning: religious and social. These dances display the kindness of this village towards Mother Nature. These are happy days for the younger generations of Hopi, because the Kachinas will provide large quantities of corn, beans, melons and peaches, and as a gift for the younger people, the Hopi carve the KACHINA dolls that are handed down to the children for them to familiarise themselves with the many Kachinas and lean about life matters. Each Kachina has its own name and it is said that there are approximately 300 to 400 Kachinas. Source: w w w.ind ioshopi.com

A spectacular circuit, both for its perfect surface and slope inclination, and its bends, as if carefully traced with a drawing pen, like those of a real F1 circuit!

T

he weather in the North of Spain is very unpredictable in spring and the clouds threatened to linger for quite a long time during the last week of April. However, the weather changed on the 2nd of May, enabling over 100 Riders from all over Spain to enjoy a weekend jampacked with Freerides and Downhills. This was the beginning of the “1st Miller Division Freeride - El Soplao, one of the most cherished projects of the Cantabrian brand, born from the experience during the past three years, in the sponsorship and collaboration of Freerides in Europe. Where did it take place? There was no doubt about it: the new La FloridaEl Soplao road, which leads to the famous El Soplao cave. Discovered at the beginning of the twentieth century with the mining industry of La Floica, it is considered one of the major wonders of geology, attracting thousands of visitors each year. A spectacular circuit, both for its perfect surface and slope inclination, and

its bends, as if carefully traced with a drawing pen, like those of a real F1 circuit! With all the safety measures (2 ambulances, inspectors on each bend, a race director, extra straw bales on the entire circuit, etc.) and, of course, a fast way back up (2 buses) which made the countless descents much faster. The first descents began on Saturday morning. Some areas were wet at the beginning but gave way to dry asphalt shortly after. For many, this was an unknown spot, but for others a very frequented place. For Fede and Santos Múgica (Race Director and a Miller Rider), this is their perfect spot. Unlike everything else in Freerides and Downhills, the organisation decided not to stop for breaks at midday, nor while getting back up or during descents; (completely non-stop!) so, the circuit was open all day and the riders were able to descend and rest whenever they pleased, which was great for them. The first eliminating rounds began in the afternoon, because, in addition to Freeride, there was also a two-leg race. People crowded around to see the riders on each bend, but, above all, on bend 3, where they arrived at full speed and where there was bound to be a show. On Sunday, the circuit also awaited with dry asphalt and a special warmth. Above all, the road was really looking forward to receiving the riders and visitors again, of enjoying the amazing descents again and the most awaited finals. The classification, after super-fast legs, was the following: 1º Javier Tato, 2º Adria Arquimbau, 3º Alfred Cano Bipo. In short, an unbeatable weekend, where all the riders ended up exhausted from skating in a spectacular circuit, which everyone ended up falling in love with, until their legs could do no more. We would like to congratulate the Race Director, Santos Múgica and Enrique Becerril for all their effort and dedication and, of course all the riders for raising the bar so much and the audience that cheered and warmed the event. Check our Facebook page for the 2016 dates!!! See you at the next event! 57

MISCHO ERBAN The fastest man in the world!

Mischo was born in Prague in the Czech Republic. From there, he moved to Austria and then Canada, which is where he lives now. Behind the man holding the world speed record on a longboard, 130,08 Km/h ., there is a friendly, healthy and modest person, full of hopeful anticipation. We had the opportunity to meet him in Munich a couple of years ago and since then, we have always wanted to know more about the fastest man on earth. You spent your childhood between several countries… When a child goes through an experience like this it changes his life. When and where did you start skating? I owned a skateboard when I was young but never really used it other than to push myself around on one knee. It wasn’t until I was in university that I needed a convenient form of transport to get from class to class. It was then when I bought my first longboard. You could say that moving to Vernon, BC was the pivotal ingredient to fuelling my downhill career. If Silver Star Rd hadn’t been literally on my doorstep, I don’t think I would have become the rider that I ended up becoming. I could hitch-hike up the road as often as I liked… I definitely put in a lot of hours into that road! Competition is something that is always inside the human being. When did you feel the desire to start competing in the skate world? I didn’t feel the need to compete until after the first race that I entered. That is also when I got the desire to organise my own event for the benefit of others. Jody “Shnitzel” Wilcock was the person responsible for convincing me to enter The Attack of Danger Bay 3 which was the first race I took part in. It definitely set me on a path I didn’t expect. We strongly believe that there is a great backstory behind the decision to go for the Guinness Record. We´d really like to know all about it! I think it’s the best story ever! The story of “why not?!” It’s the same impetus behind my decision to beat downhill, to race, to travel and definitely to do the record. It was just natural to go for it considering the last record was well overdue and needed to be broken in order to reflect the current potential of downhill skateboarding. I simply acted on an idea, but that being said it wouldn’t have been possible without Recon Instruments who I am greatly indebted to for believing in my dream and me, and making it happen! Can you remind us the name of the road where you got the Guinness

Record? Why did you choose that place precisely? Is this choice the result of a deep meditation or did you simply feel that it was “the road”?

the next time I do another gravity record I would love to do it on a top mount.

I chose the road at Les Éboulement because it was a proven record setting road by the streetluge trio The Three Bobs. They set the streetluge record at a blistering 157.41 km/h with Bob Touchette taking the golden run. The road is safe and has a beautiful setting, overlooking the St. Lawrence River just and hour and a half away from Québec City.

We´re really interested in your feelings.. Rolling at 130 Km/h…Do you have time to think about anything or is your mind full of adrenaline?

Regarding the technical details, did you decide your set-up, wheels and axles to skate as fast? Did it take many trials before going straight for the Guinness Record?

The first runs are definitely filled with some adrenaline but the more you do the same run over and over again that excitement fades away and turns into time to focus and process your body position and all the ways you can squeeze out more speed. This all becomes futile after a while and you simply have to accept the given speed cap for the given parameters at play. It is wishful thinking that one day a road will be paved longer and steeper than what is currently out there.

There wasn’t much thinking really. I just went with the same setup that I had already used for top speed in Colorado. I suppose I could have tested some more but I knew it was a solid setup. I think

Is there any place you like to go or where you “hide” before an event of this kind? Do you need concentration or do you prefer to be with your friends and family? Tell us how you prepare yourself. There’s no need to hide! I just try to ride as often as possible and I had spent a lot of time riding Silver Star Rd before the event. Just be active and in shape and try not to stress. It’s just a run down a steep road… one that makes you smile a lot! ;) Surely some of our readers are considering obtaining a Guinness Record.. What do you recommend? Depends on where, when and what. The Guinness World Records website has all the information you need to attempt a record and to what extent you want their involvement. If you still have more questions, you can email them for more help. It’s rather simple if you get one of their representatives to be present at your event but be prepared to pay a lot more than you expect. You can always do it on a low budget with a lower cost, but if you go down this route, be prepared to do a lot more documentation work and verification of data and results. That all gets submitted to GWR for them to verify and approve your attempt. This all takes time. In the end, you get what you pay for. Finally, we would like to know something about your new RG on an electric longboard. What can you tell us about this? Next Generation Vehicles asked me to test their NEXTboard in May 2015 and I was hooked on the potential it had, especially when they told me how fast they wanted to take this board. We talked about setting a record and we ended up doing that in the fall. The new electric skateboard record was set at 95.83 km/h! A little bit slower than we had hoped for but there are still some obstacles that need to be overcome and I think we will be ready for another attempt in 2016. I can’t wait to have another chance! Thanks a lot Mischo, we are delighted to have you share your experiences with us. We really hope you continue inspiring riders as much –or more- than you´re doing now. Thank you very much! Skate safe, skate fast!

~ Okuda ~ Kaos Temple or the “Sistine Chapel of Skate”

With the limited series Yee Ha Born on the 19th of November 1980 in Skateboard “KAOS STAR by OKUDA”, inspired by the KAOS TEMPLE, Miller Division, by the hand of IAM GALLERY, is committed to opening a new space for artistic expression in his collections, incorporating

Santander, based in Madrid since 2000 and a graduate in Fine Arts at the Complutense University of Madrid. His works on railway tracks and abandoned factories of his hometown were clearly recognisable from his beginnings in 1997. In parallel to his street works, Okuda also began to produce more intimate works in his study, with which he evolved towards a more personal path from 2009 onwards.

organic forms in artistic pieces that could well be catalogued as Pop Surrealism with a clear street essence. His works often pose contradictions on existentialism, the universe, infinity, the meaning of life and the false freedom of capitalism, and they display a clear conflict between modernity and our roots; in short, between the human being and him himself.

His works of arts can be seen in the streets and galleries of all over the world: India, Mali, Mozambique, United States, Japan, Chile, Brazil, Peru, South Africa, Mexico and the entire European continent. Perhaps this is the most asked question in artists’ interviews, but it has to be asked all the same: Are artists born or created? Was Okuda born with his art or was it developed throughout his life and experiences? The artist is born, but with discipline, full dedication and self-belief, one grows bigger and better. When you first start to create art, it was on railway tracks, abandoned places... What was your “first-time” like? What did you feel? It was simply a game. I didn’t have such a strong feeling for everything I did as I do now. I was always out in the street and I was always drawing. It was obvious and natural to do it in

The Kaos Temple is The Skate Church. What is your motivation for this sport? Do you practice it now or have you done in the past? What modality? I practised it every day until I was 15, because due to my parents working in the hospitality sector, my brothers and I were always on the streets of my neighbourhood. Could this be a way of making a reference to fond memories on top of a skate? Is there something romantic or nostalgic in this? Yes, to a certain extent, the fact that the church has the supplement of a skate makes it even more perfect and nostalgic for me, of course. I guess the idea of making a limited series of a skateboard board came to you fast, what is the story behind it? Within our crowdfunding, created with my Ink and Movement team, the first element that came to us and that the space itself warranted was a skate board. As well as a series of stained glass windows, silk-screen printing, books... Incidentally, I need to thank Red Bull, Montana Colors, Socketines and Miller Division for their sponsorship and support in this project.

the street too. Even through the feeling you get when you see your name written in different and unique forms, in many places, was very special. And perhaps that was what motivated me never to stop.

What is the next artistic challenge you have in mind? Well, I have scheduled many projects for next year, such as attend the Art Beijing, China; several murals/buildings with the Jew Holocaust theme in Hungary, Bulgaria and Romania; and I hope to go to Australia this year too. In general, my intention is to continue growing and producing at this rhythm and this level... Don’t stop... I invite you all to follow me on my diary / Instagram @okudart +++ Love & thx to everyone +++

What goes through your mind when your works of art no longer decorate an abandoned factory in Santander, but streets all over the world? Well, I am nobody, nothing is too good, and I still have thousands of countries and cultures to capture my soul, my fingerprint and from which to absorb the experiences, people and places. No limits in the sky‌ From all the places you have created works of art, which one is your favourite? Which is most special to you? Perhaps before the church, I had several things that I am proud of: my Kaos Star sculpture located permanently in Gorky Park, Moscow, for Artmossphere in 2014. The fountain I painted for the Bonnarroo Festival in 2013 in Tennessee, or my largest work, the 16-floor building I did last September in Kiev. Kaos Temple. How does this project reach you? How did the idea come up? The magic of the Internet... I see Isma, my friend, on Facebook, who is a friend of the guys that manage the space, the Church Brigade, and it was at that instant when I fell in love with the place without even having seen it in person. With this project, you say you want to change the History of Art and after seeing the result, how do you think you achieved it? It’s not me that says it; it was simply a strong statement, not too far from reality, that we use to strengthen our crowdfunding. At the end, I think we have united worlds and to a certain extent, we have also changed history a little, because a street artist goes inside to paint one of the most classic elements of History of Art. 63
