2012 Printmaking I n v i tat i o n a l

I quickly made a list of about 20 printmakers. The artists I chose were established and well known in the printmaking community. It surprised me that all of the nine artists I initially contacted accepted.

Miller Gallery, Kutztown University

The 2012 Printmaking Invitational encompassed the power and drama of Frances Jetter’s linocuts and magnificient drawing in the prints of Michael Goro, Rostislav Spitkovsky, Bruce Waldman and Ivanco Talevski. There were beautiful and subtle surfaces created by Richard Hricko and Rosalyn Richards. The masterful woodcuts of Endi Poskovic added color and Rochelle Toner’s strong etchings bordering between realism and abstraction rounded out the exhibition.

In the spring of 2012, I was asked to curate an invitational print exhibition to open in September 2012 at Kutztown University’s Miller Gallery. This involved selecting 8 to 10 artists, asking each to loan 6 to 10 prints, in some case selecting the prints and lots of e-mails. It was exciting and challenging for me because, as an artist, I’ve always been on the other side of this process. A curator can design an experience for the viewers. This is creative and it can be educational, emotional and inspiring. Working on this show was a learning experience for me and I now have a better appreciation of a curator’s role. There is so much excellent contemporary printmaking and so much variety. I decided to feature artists who specialized in printmaking. This has always made sense to me. The ideas of sole authorship and works by specialists were central to the exhibition. There have been many exhibitions of prints by painters and sculptors, some very good. These are printed in workshops with technicians having a significant role. Individual efforts interest me more.

I am well aware that an exhibition like this is a cooperative effort that couldn’t happen without the work of many individuals. I want to thank all the people who made this exhibition possible. The artists generously loaned their work for the exhibition – Michael Goro, Richard Hricko, Frances Jetter, Endi Poskovic, Rostislav Spitkovsky, Rosalyn Richards, Ivanco Talevski, Rochelle Toner and Bruce Waldman. Each made a strong individual statement and each one added to the quality of the exhibition. I also want to thank Karen Stanford, the Acting Gallery Director, for an outstanding job. Michael Goro’s art is a continuous creative search for raw authenticity in urban environments and human forms that are constantly changing. Individuals change as they experience life and cities develop and/ or decay through time.

Exhibitions and Awards

People and places have history and experience. Cities are weathered by time and through use, taking on a personality of their own from the people and the elements that have interacted with them. It is a combination of all of these factors that creates authenticity. Looking for subject matter Goro finds simple things that we see every day, things that become symbolic once they are taken out of context. He experiments with the juxtaposition of places, faces, and architectural designs that reflect diverse personal experiences. His story is a vivid illustration of the end of the last century—a time of deconstruction, discontinuity, and dislocation. Goro finds that black-andwhite prints convey contradictory images better than any other medium by reducing them to the most basic color contrast. His work provides the full spectrum of techniques ranging from renaissance engraving to digital photogravure.

In his graphic work, Endi Poskovic invokes influences as disparate as early cinema, classic Japanese woodcut prints, devotional pictures, and Eastern European propaganda posters. By combining visual representation with text, Poskovic shifts the reading of the image by providing a new context for the viewer to continually reinterpret. Reminiscent of youthful whimsy and playful fantasy, the unsettling juxtapositions and invented constructions in Poskovic’s prints convey a sense of the habitual, like a window into the everyday reality of a different world. The hybridized narratives of toy-like objects and fantastic landscapes in Poskovic’s work imply stories from personal and social histories, referencing themes of displacement, shifting cultural identity, environmental transformation, migration, and alienation—all of which are presented in images that are as tragic as they are magnificent. w w w. end i p o s k o v i c . c o m

In recent prints and drawings Richards has been exploring the visual and metaphorical intensities of the natural world, and is continually influenced by scientific imagery from fields such as biology, geology, and particle physics. She employs found imagery, and often uses multiple plates in printmaking. Richards works in an improvisational manner with a tension that develops between appropriation and the inventive generation of marks, lines, and chance occurrences. Through this process of editing and layering, she also explores a micro-macro dynamic in how the images suggest the natural world and its processes. w w w. ga l l er y- gray. c o m

These watercolor drawings and prints, as well as the other drawings and prints that Toner has made over the past few years, have the collective title Nature, Pleasure, and Innuendo. In her work she is fascinated by the way abstraction evolves from a process of observing, distilling, and internalizing information in a synthesis of conscious and sub-conscious interactions. Toner’s work explores the juncture between abstraction and representation, the point at which the referent may be felt in the work without the intrusion of the literal. w w w. r o c h e l l et o ner . c o m
