small classes with wonderful professors Chose Millsaps for its academic standing, because the people are friendly and welcoming, and for the “small class sizes where I could form a relationship with the professors and classmates and not be one student in a sea of faces.”

Since coming to Millsaps has “become more independent…and begun to concretely define myself and create deep roots that will benefit me for the rest of my life.”

MAJORS IN NEUROSCIENCE AND PLANS TO GET A DOCTORATE IN PHYSICAL THERAPY.

COMMUNITY

Recommends you try three of her favorite Jackson restaurants, La Caz, Keifers and Pizza Shack, but insists you try Mugshots’ burgers, because nothing else “could seriously be that BIG and that TASTY! Go hungry!”

Found “volunteering in One Campus, One Community (1C1C) activities with children from the neighborhoods surrounding Millsaps’ campus” to be her most memorable extracurricular experience so far, but also highly recommends the annual Watermelon Bust because “it’s a blast!”

Is delighted that the people she has met at Millsaps have become “some of the closest companions and sincere friends that I could have ever asked for. I never thought I would meet such wonderful people.”

Still keeps in touch with her study abroad host family from last summer’s Costa Rica Immersion Program. “My desire to learn Spanish changed from simply mastering the language to communicating comfort, joy and peace to the people I worked with in the local nursing home and children’s shelter. My Costa Rica experience gifted me with MUCH more than a Spanish 2000 credit!”

Advises that “you will be academically challenged at Millsaps, but those trying times will make you stronger and help you to become the person you hope to be.”

CURRICULUM Believes “Millsaps is a great place for studying, and an excellent place for discovering.”

Chose Millsaps for the rigorous academic environment, its great programs for international students, and the liberal arts curriculum which will allow him to gain “a wide range of knowledge that will help me to discover my own interests.”

Is surprised that Millsaps is even more beautiful in person than it is in pictures.

Will never forget how warmly he was treated when he arrived at Millsaps and how many hugs he received. “The hugs melted away the strangeness of being in a new country and made me ready to enjoy college life.”

Is amazed at the relationships Millsaps students have with faculty and how “professors encourage students to think for themselves and make their own choices,” instead of just imposing their ideas on them.

the life of a student athlete Lives out his dream of playing collegiate athletics as part of the Millsaps football team.

Believes “it was the best decision of my life,” to attend Millsaps. Not only is he part of the team, but he actually got playing time and the opportunity to travel with the team as a freshman! Though football is very important to him, the opportunities to “have it all” are what matter most!

GUNNAR LIVES HIS DREAM ON THE FOOTBALL TURF WHILE PURSUING A MAJOR IN MATHEMATICS AND A MINOR IN BIOLOGY.

lives his dream

on the FOOTBALL TURF “Coming from a large high school, it has been a great bonus to be part of such a close-knit community. I have been struck by just how nice everyone is! And if you need help, it is always just around the corner. This is one of the greatest benefits of a small school.”

Freshman year is one of the biggest transitional times in life, and coming to Millsaps made it all so much easier. I have the support of my teammates, coaches and professors, as well as fellow students. Getting involved has been easy!

Plans on going to medical school and is confident that his academic path at Millsaps will prepare him well! While the academic rigor may be challenging, “I know that I have the support of the Millsaps community to ensure my success!”

Knows that making the decision of where to attend college is one of the hardest things a young person has to decide, but the key for him was in knowing that, by choosing Millsaps, his academic and athletic goals could all be achieved!”

“And the food in Jackson is awesome!!”

JENNIFER IS DOUBLE-MAJORING IN BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION AND COMMUNICATIONS.

founded the

MAJOR MELODIES music ensemble

Now understands what it meant when people told her that “Millsaps would teach me how to think, not what to think.”

Sings with Major Melodies, a campus ensemble that performs top 40 songs and show choir music, which she founded as a freshman. “We now have about 50 members and were featured in the New York Times and USA Today!”

Likes to stay busy, to put it mildly. Her diverse activities range from being a Resident Assistant to performing with the Purple Pride dance ensemble, working as a Millsaps Ambassador for the Office of Admissions, and of course, lending her voice to Major Melodies.

Completed three internships by the end of her sophomore year “which have really helped me narrow down what fields I’m interested in.” She gained marketing, management, finance, accounting, research, writing, editing, and interviewing experience through her time as a business intern with NetApp, a newsroom intern with WBAP-FM, and a production intern with WJTV, the CBS affiliate in Jackson.

Advises that “If you want a place that will have your best interest as their first priority, choose Millsaps. At other schools, I felt like I had to beg for attention… but Millsaps is truly a school that strives to meet the needs and wants of the students.”

Millsaps teaches you how to think, not what to think Has discovered “so many amazing topics that I would have never been aware of without Millsaps core curriculum classes.

Believes that to get the full Millsaps experience, all students should at least once: 1. Jump in the fountain 2. Make a caf creation 3. Sit in the Bowl 4. Feed a Mill-cat 5. Take a class you never would have

getting involved is ridiculously easy Hangs out with friends, and even occasionally studies at the Rez (Jackson’s Ross Barnett Reservoir).

Thinks getting involved at Millsaps is ridiculously easy. “You almost have to try to not make friends or join a club because everyone is so friendly and all of the organizations are very welcoming. However, you must know your limits and resist the urge to over commit!”

ALEX

STUDIES BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION AND PSYCHOLOGY AND IS CONSIDERING STAYING AT MILLSAPS TO COMPLETE THE FIFTH YEAR MBA PROGRAM BEFORE WORKING IN THE HUMAN RESOURCES FIELD.

planned

MAJOR MADNESS 2011

Is proud that his classmates ”are very aware of what’s going on in the world no matter what their major is. I love how I can fiercely debate almost any topic with almost anyone and still be friends with them afterwards.”

Was elected the Executive Director of Programming for the Student Body Association as a sophomore. “This was a major accomplishment for me as well as a way to give back to the Millsaps community. The biggest event I have overseen was Major Madness 2011, which included a huge concert and crawfish boil.”

Is amazed at the freedom Millsaps students have to research whatever topics interest them and to analyze their findings as creatively as they wish.

Highly recommends the Oreo pie at the Caf.

Wants you to know that “At Millsaps you will question almost everything you have ever been taught and learn to think for yourself, reach your own conclusions and define your own beliefs. Millsaps truly does change lives; it’s not just something we say!”

ERIN

PLANS TO USE HER MILLSAPS ENGLISH MAJOR AND FILM STUDIES MINOR TO LAND A JOB EITHER IN PUBLISHING OR ADAPTING LITERATURE INTO FILM, AFTER ATTENDING GRAD SCHOOL.

studied

ENGLISH LITERATURE in London UNIVERSITY OF WESTMINSTER

Chose Millsaps for “the number and caliber of opportunities it presents. I knew I wanted the personal atmosphere of a small school, but I didn’t want size to limit me. After speaking to students and professors, I quickly realized that Millsaps is truly a place where I could accomplish and experience anything.”

Feels she has a voice on campus since “Millsaps takes student feedback very seriously. I have definitely seen students’ ideas and suggestions implemented around the school.”

Was thrilled to “talk one-on-one with directors, producers, and screenwriters about their personal experiences creating films as part of the Southern Circuit Film Series. Without even leaving the campus, I received hands-on training and advice and made valuable contacts with filmmakers from across the country.”

In a one hour span “learned a traditional Irish dance, got a henna tattoo, and ate Russian borscht as part of Millsaps annual Diversity Festival, a celebration of world cultures that I honestly don’t think I’ll ever forget.”

Had “an incredible once-in-a-lifetime experience studying English Literature at the University of Westminster in London last summer. As an English lit buff, I was in absolute Heaven. Reading and studying the literature can only take you so far; I got to live it.”

a place where I can accomplish and experience anything Advises new students not to miss the free movie nights at the local theater just before exams begin, or Dessert Day, when “Chef Dave makes a holiday-themed pyramid (literally) out of desserts in the middle of the cafeteria. It’s magical!”
