Park Trades Center & Beyond Artists of Kalamazoo County

The Park Trades Center has stood for more than 100 years. Originally a manufacturing facility, today it houses a large creative community of artists, artisans, designers, entrepreneurs and small business men and women. It’s a place of ingenuity and it’s always growing, changing and seeking ways to tie the cultural synergy occurring inside to the Kalamazoo community and beyond. The building now includes a small gallery (Saniwax), and, in addition to its contingent of resident emerging and established artists, it is also home to Kalamazoo College art students, the entire art faculty from Western Michigan University, and two nonprofit guilds; West Michigan Glass Society and the Kalamazoo Book Arts Center.

These people are more than friends and creative colleagues. All are among the first contacts I made on joining the Park Trades Center community.

Simply stated, they make a difference in the lives

of others. All explore new ideas in creating artwork for themselves, as well as for others to own and enjoy.

West Michigan Glass Society/PTC They are also the first to help, to join in, to make an effort, to support a new idea.

and make a commitment to each other, to the creative community of artists and artisans with whom we shared (and continue to share) creative space (working studios).

I hope this publication will be the first of several, for there are now, many others who have joined the ranks of artists working from the Park Tardes Center, and/or have moved on to affect the world in positive and creative ways.

Kim Clark Glass Artist Kalamazoo

This is just a start.

There are so many to identify, to credit with the successes, the long-term viability and impact the artspace movement (and the artists themselves) has made on our country over the past 50 years.

In Kalamazoo, credit John Thingstad (principal behind the Park Trades Center/PTC), Lesa Sanchez and the PTC staff on behalf of the artists they’ve supported in so many ways. To Kalamazoo (a not-so fictitious place), and all U.S cities fortunate enough to have a similar facility...I hope you understand and appreciate the value of your artspace and the artists who create among you.

Thank you!... ...for taking time to look through this document, and to consider the inherent value artists bring to the world and to you (yourself), your family, friends and children.
