UTE PLAYER PROFILE Following a Father’s Lead Junior guard Sedrick Barefield was groomed to be a basketball player from a young age by his father, who played in college and professionally.

Junior guard Sedrick Barefield played in 24 games with three starts in his first season on the court with the Utes in 2016-17.

S

edrick Barefield’s basketball beginnings came at a younger age than it does most players. With a father who played collegiately as well as overseas, Barefield benefitted from having a major basketball influence in his life going back to his days as a toddler.

“I started playing basketball when I was about two years old. My parents bought me the Little Tikes basketball hoop,” Barefield recalled. “From there, I just learned from my dad. After playing in college at San Diego State he played professionally in Europe and Germany, so I picked up my passion from him. My love for the sport took off from there.”

After Barefield’s early start with hoops, he played AAU basketball for the Compton Magic and attended Centennial High School in his hometown of Corona, Calif. He led Centennial to a 29-4 record and the CIF state championship while averaging 14.4 points, 4.4 assists and 2.2 rebounds during his junior year.

He earned multiple all-area honors as a prep standout, including being named to the Southern Section All-Open Division team, Los Angeles Times AllArea team, Riverside Press-Enterprise All-Area Player of the Year, High School Game-Time Boys’ Basketball Player of the Year, Big VIII League MVP and All-CIF third team following the 2015 season. Barefield then signed with Southern Methodist University to begin his college career.

“I went to SMU originally to play for Larry Brown,” Barfield said. “It was just a great city and a great program. They were also a top 25 program at the time, and just a really good school. Nothing but good things going on with that program,” Barefield said.

However, during his freshman year, after he played in just six games for the Mustangs, Barefield decided to transfer to Utah.

“SMU went through some sanctions and ultimately Coach Brown left. There was a lot going on over there and we were getting a lot of negative attention. I just felt like I needed to get a fresh start,” Barefield explained. “I think coming to the University of Utah was the best decision I could have made for my basketball career.”

In his first season with the Utes as a sophomore transfer, Barefield played in 24 games with three starts. He averaged 9.0 points a game, including a season-high 35 points against San Francisco, while shooting 42 percent from the field and 39 percent from 3-point range. He also had 47 assists and 19 steals on the year. (continued on page 6)

A

fter a pair of winning seasons and its first Pac-12 Tournament win since 2014, Utah men’s tennis looks to take the next step. With the loss of just one player from its rotation, the Utes will try to make a dent in the powerful “Conference of Champions,” a league that placed five teams in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s Top 25.

The top player for the Utes could be junior Dan Little. The London native was ranked headed into the fall season and also picked up the biggest win for the program, defeating No. 16 Spencer Papa of Oklahoma at the ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla.

Little prevailed in 13 matches last season, including wins against players from No. 5 UCLA and Washington.

“Dan had a great win at ITAs,” head coach Roeland Brateanu said. “This is the healthiest and happiest he has been since arriving at Utah. He is a big hitter that can beat anyone on any given day.”

David Micevski was the No. 1 player for the Utes last season and captured 15 singles victories,

including wins against Washington and Arizona. The All-Pac-12 performer from Macedonia also competed for the Utes at the ITA All-American Championships and then reached the quarterfinals of the ITA Regional.

“David played all summer, including some tough competition at the ITF Futures event,” Brateanu added.

“He was ranked entering the season last year and had a rough go of it at times. He takes his game very seriously and professionally and played as our No. 1 in most conference matches. In this league, that’s tough to ask of anyone.”

Slava Shainyan had a solid freshman campaign after arriving from Russia, progressing from the No. 6 position to No. 3. With 15 wins by season’s end, he started this year by winning his first six matches, including a singles title at the Utah Intercollegiate.

“Slava also played ITF’s this summer after a strong freshman season,” Brateanu said. “He developed nicely as the season progressed and will compete for one of our top three spots this year. At the Utah Intercollegiate, he beat some top players and really stepped up.”

Santiago Sierra had eight singles victories for

Utah and also represented Mexico in Davis Cup play before having issues with his shoulder that required off-season surgery. An ITA Scholar Athlete and cocaptain, he should be at full strength by the spring.

“Santi had his surgery in the summer and is just a true workhorse for us,” Brateanu stated. “His first action was at the ITA Regionals and he has been a consistent player for us in the middle of the lineup. His leadership is another attribute we covet with this team.”

Joe Woolley was another Ute who was able to capture 15 singles victories last season, his first of active competition at the Division I level. Woolley has developed into one of Utah’s best doubles players as he and Little advanced to the semifinals of the ITA Mountain Regional. He teamed with Egbert Weverink to win a flight at the Utah Intercollegiate.

“Joe had an up-and-down first season after sitting out in 2016,” Brateanu said. “He changed his game to focus more on his offense. We have helped him with how he serves in order to provide a little more consistency, and with that we have seen his confidence improve on a daily basis.”

Weverink, in addition to capturing the doubles crown with Woolley, went to Provo, Utah, and won the consolation singles title at the ITA Mountain Regional.

Without question, the senior co-captain has started the season strong with 10 victories in the fall.

“Eggy is starting to play to his 6-foot-8 frame,” Brateanu stated. “He needed to come into this season

UTE PLAYER PROFILE Sedrick Barefield (continued from page 4) After a solid start to his career as a Ute, Barefield has high aspirations for this year.

“I would say I want to continue improving everything from last season, from tightening up my ball handling, to improving my shooting. My focus has really been to get into the paint and make plays for my teammates, and score the ball a little bit more too. Instead of relying on my outside shot, which I still practice every day, it has been a different focus so far,” said Barefield.

With this being his junior season and the team featuring a lot of new faces, Barefield now finds himself in more of a leadership position. He is trying to lead both vocally and by example.

“I would say I’m just a guy with a lot of energy and I really try to uplift my teammates,” Barefield said. “I really just like to go out there, have fun and score the ball, while also making my teammates better. I just want to do whatever it takes to help my teammates succeed.”

In addition to his busy schedule filled with basketball and school, Barefield knows the importance of enjoying some hobbies in his free time and giving himself a chance to recharge.

“In my free time I like to read, meditate and hang out with friends. Pretty basic stuff, like watching TV and Netflix shows,” he said.

Once Barefield’s collegiate career is over, he would like to follow in his father Ray’s footsteps one more time and play professionally. Ray played at San Diego State from 1990-93 before embarking on a lengthy career oversees.

With two seasons still left at Utah to develop his great potential, Barefield has a lot to look forward to in his days on the hardwood.

Randy Cory is a newcomer who was ranked as the No. 6 doubles player in the nation and No. 1 singles player in the Northern California area. In the fall, he advanced to the round of 32 at the ITA Mountain Regional.

“Randy is a talented left-hander that was a nationally-ranked doubles player in high school,” Brateanu said. “He will have to work harder at this level and be more disciplined but he can be a difference-maker for us.”

Chase Stoner redshirted last season and was ranked as high as No. 104 in the nation after playing at Brighton High School.

“Chase made a big commitment to his game and played really well at the fall events,” Brateanu stated. “The redshirt year really paid off and he deserves the credit for that. He challenged himself and turned himself into a very competitive player.”

Another young player who has used his redshirt season is Azat Hankuliyev. He won both singles matches he took part in last season and also captured four seven doubles matches in 2017.

“Azat is fighting along with Chase to break into the lineup,” Brateanu said. “He is an offensive player who spent the summer working hard with local pros to improve his game.”

The University of Utah was rated No. 1 for commercializing technology innovations according to the Milken Institute’s 2017 ratings, generating $211.8 million in licensing income and recording 69 startups from 2012-15, and attracting $417.2 million in research spending in 2015.

Geneticist Mario R. Capecchi received the 2007 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his work on gene targeting. Çağan Şekercioğlu, assistant professor of biology, won the Scientific and Technical Research Council of Turkey’s highest prize for 2014.

Peter J. Stang, distinguished professor of chemistry, received the 2013 Priestley Medal and 2011 National Medal of Science for his pioneering work in supramolecular chemistry.

The U.’s entertainment arts and engineering program was rated second in the nation according to Animation Career Review in early 2017 and has earned a top three rating seven years running. The University’s School of Computing, which earned a top 60 world ranking in 2016, was founded in 1965 and began a pioneering legacy in computer graphics and visualization that continues today. The internationally-recognized Scientific Computing & Imaging Institute is a leader in creating new scientific computing techniques, tools and systems to help solve wide-ranging challenges of human life. The College of Engineering’s undergraduate program was ranked 56th and the graduate school 51st according to U.S. News & World Report in 2016.

MEDICINE

University of Utah Hospitals and Clinics, a Level I trauma center, was ranked No. 1 in the nation in quality, safety and accountability in 2016. It marked the seventh-straight year that UUHC ranked among the nation’s top 10 academic medical centers. U.S. News and World Report recognized the school of medicine’s primary care program (34th), pharmacy program (17th), physical therapy program (20), and the school of nursing’s doctorate (22nd) and master’s (31st) programs.

The U.’s surgeons were the first in the world to conduct a permanent artificial heart implant in 1982.

More recently, the Utah Genome Project is one of several innovative medical research programs at the U. Other notable programs include the nationallyrecognized Huntsman Cancer Institute, the Clinical Neurosciences Center and the Moran Eye Center.

BUSINESS SCHOOL

The David Eccles School of Business’ undergraduate program has been rated among the top 50 by U.S. News & World Report in the past four years.

In the magazine’s most recent rankings, the executive MBA program was ranked 21st in the nation while the full-time MBA program jumped 22 spots to No. 57. The school also has been placed in the top 25 for entrepreneurship six straight years by the Princeton Review. The U.’s graduate accounting program was rated top 35 in the nation in 2016.

LAW SCHOOL

The S.J. Quinney College of Law, which opened a new building in the fall of 2015, was ranked 45th among ABA-approved U.S. law schools in 2016. For the second year in a row, Utah retained its position as a top 10 program for environmental law.

CAMPUS LIFE

JON M. & KAREN HUNTSMAN BASKETBALL FACILITY

T

he Jon M. and Karen Huntsman Basketball Facility, a state-of-the-art, $36 million, 101,000-square-foot structure, opened northeast of the Huntsman Center arena on Oct. 1, 2015. The four-story building features a legacy hall, separate glass-enclosed upper levels for both the men’s and women’s programs, and a rooftop terrace.

The ground floor entrances to the facility lead into the Kem and Carolyn Gardner Legacy Hall. Banners bearing images of the former Ute basketball greats hang from a 38-foot-high ceiling. A pictorial history of the men’s and women’s basketball programs lines the walls alongside a massive 30-foot raised circle and feather logo. The 6,000-square-foot hall is bathed in natural light from clearstory windows.

Expansive viewing balconies overlooking the men’s and women’s practice gymnasiums are accessible via Legacy Hall. The configuration of both gyms is ideal for practice because it allows coaches to run five simultaneous drills without impacting one another. The courts are an exact replica of the one in the Jon M. Huntsman Center. The gymnasiums also contain a video editing area, courtside taping tables and cardio equipment. A glass-enclosed yoga room shared by both teams overlooks the women’s practice court.

Other features of level one include a shared space for pre-game meals and donor functions.

Both teams have separate theaters complete with projection screens and whiteboard walls, as well as player lounges with six 55-inch televisions, custombuilt furniture and gaming consoles. The team locker rooms, which are 700-square-feet in size, are also found on level one. In addition to custom lockers, showers and restrooms, they boast in-ground hot and cold tubs that face 80-inch television screens.

The women’s and men’s basketball offices, recruiting lounges, conference rooms and coaches’ lounges are located on levels three and four, respectively. All assistant coaches have window offices and private balconies. Across the hall are offices for administrative and video staff.

The head coaches have L-shaped 935-squarefoot offices encased in floor-to-ceiling glass with private balconies. They are equipped with fireplaces, 60-inch televisions that retract into the ceiling when not in use, and surround sound.

Above level four is a rooftop terrace, bordered by a garden with low-water and drought-resistant plants, offering a 360-degree panoramic view of the Wasatch and Oquirrh Mountain ranges, the University of Utah campus, downtown Salt Lake City and the Great Salt Lake. It includes a fire pit, gas grill and Utah-themed patio furniture.

A series of existing tunnels connects level one to the HPER facilities, the Sorenson High Performance

Center and Burbidge Family Athletics-Academic Center—which serve all of Utah’s student-athletes— as well as the Jon M. Huntsman Center.

“I truly feel that the Huntsman Basketball Facility is one of the nicest facilities on the planet,” said head men’s basketball coach Larry Krystkowiak. “I have been around a lot of the facilities in the country at both the NCAA and NBA levels, and this is the nicest. I say that not only because it is ours, but because the unrivaled amenities inside are complimented by the spectacular views in every direction.”

Added women’s basketball coach Lynne Roberts, “From a standpoint of taking care of student-athletes and showing them how important men’s and women’s basketball is at Utah, there’s no better statement than this facility. It is truly unbelievable and is going to be a huge asset for us in recruiting. We’ve been able to walk recruits through it already and they are picking their chin off of the ground the entire time. It’s the definition of a ‘wow’ factor.”

The Jon M. and Karen Huntsman Basketball Facility was built in conjunction with the state-ofthe-art Sorenson High Performance Center, which opened in May 2015. The 20,000-square foot facility has conditioning and strength training space; an athletic training, rehabilitation and hydrotherapy area; and a refueling/nutrition station.

SORENSON HIGH PERFORMANCE CENTER

T

he state-of-the-art Sorenson Legacy Foundation High Performance Center, a two-story, 20,000-square-foot structure located northwest Jon M. Huntsman Center, opened in the summer of 2015.

The facility provides everything a student-athlete needs to achieve their peak level of performance— ranging from nutrition, strength and conditioning, sports medicine and rehabilitation, and sports psychology—all within close proximity to maximize time efficiency.

The ground floor features a 9,500-square-foot sports medicine facility and a 500-square-foot fueling station, while an expansive 10,000-squarefoot strength and conditioning center resides on the top floor. Two exterior entrances are located off the southeast corner of the building, while a refurbished tunnel system connects the performance center to the existing HPER complex, the Jon M. Huntsman Center and the new Jon M. and Karen Huntsman Basketball Facility.

18 treatment tables—including one traction table—six taping stations, a hydrotherapy area, a functional rehabilitation space and cardio area, and three exam rooms.

The rehab area features Optojump and forceplate machines, and a Delos postural proprioception system.

A pair of Wattbikes and two Alter-G treadmills, which use air pressure to alleviate body weight so that athletes can start conditioning earlier after injury, are also included. The treatment area offers several modalities, including Game Ready, Dynatron with thermoprobe, Diathermy Hivamat, and NormaTec recovery systems.

The expansive hydrotherapy area includes a plunge pool in the shape of a block U, half containing cold water and half hot water with a capacity of 20 people per side. It also houses a Hydroworks 2000 underwater treadmill equipped with cameras and television monitors, allowing athletes to watch their subsurface work.

Six offices for the full-time staff and one

office for graduate assistants are also included, as well as an area to make custom orthodics, mouthpieces and splints.

The second-floor strength and conditioning center has 12 work stations, allowing athletes to train efficiently in a sport-specific program. It also includes a PLAE turf running surface, measuring five yards wide by 35 yards in length. Agility and plyometric sprinting drills performed in this area allow athletes to enhance movement patterns that transfer to their sport.

Keiser air pressurized equipment has been installed, allowing for greater training variation while providing instant feedback of athletes’ movement power. avid W. Pershing proudly celebrates four decades of service to the University of Utah. Named as the 15th President in 2012, President Pershing leads a diverse team of faculty and staff as the chief executive at one of the world’s top research universities.

President Pershing joined the University of Utah as an Assistant Professor of Chemical Engineering in 1977. He was named a Presidential Young Investigator by the National Science Foundation in 1984, became Dean of the College of Engineering in 1987, and was named a Distinguished Professor of Chemical Engineering in 1995. In 1998, Dr. Pershing became the Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs responsible for approximately 1,000 faculty and 25,000 students in the colleges of the main campus. Now, as President, Dr. Pershing continues his commitment to the undergraduate experience with initiatives and programs aimed at

enriching academic excellence on campus.

A gifted teacher and prolific researcher, President Pershing is the recipient of the University of Utah’s Distinguished Teaching and Distinguished Research Awards and the U’s Rosenblatt Prize for Excellence.

He has authored more than 80 peer-reviewed publications, won more than 20 research grants totaling approximately $60 million, and earned five patents. He was named Engineering Educator of the Year by the Utah Engineering Council in 2002 and is a winner of the Governor’s Medal for Science and Technology. He was director of the University of Utah’s Center for Simulation of Accidental Fires and Explosions, fueled by a $40 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy.

President Pershing holds a bachelor’s degree from Purdue University and a Ph.D. from the University of Arizona, both in chemical engineering.

ust 37 years old when he was appointed as Utah’s director of athletics, Chris Hill, Ph.D. has led the school’s athletics programs to unprecedented success since his hiring in October of 1987. Now in his 31st year at Utah, he is the nation’s longest actively tenured athletics director at the same school in the NCAA FBS. Hill’s most monumental accomplishment was spearheading Utah’s move to the Pac-12 Conference in 2011. In their first six seasons in the “Conference of Champions,” the Utes have won three Pac-12 gymnastics championships (2014, 2015, 2016), one baseball title (2016) and a football South Division co-championship (2015).

Utah has won 10 NCAA team championships during Hill’s tenure—six by the ski team (including the 2017 NCAA title) and four by the gymnastics team.

The Utes have also placed second in the nation 16 times since he took the helm, including the 1998 men’s basketball team’s NCAA runner-up finish and a No. 2 final national ranking by the football team after its win over Alabama in the 2009 Sugar Bowl.

Hill has hired three coaches who won National Coach of the Year honors at Utah: football coaches Urban Meyer (2004) and Kyle Whittingham (2008), and men’s basketball coach Rick Majerus (1998).

Hill has served on several national boards, including the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Committee (2004-09), chair of the NCAA Championships/Competition Cabinet (1997-98) and the NCAA Management Council Administrative Committee. He was on NACDA’s executive committee from 2002-06.

a bowl in the 22 years preceding Hill’s appointment as athletics director, is 14-4 in bowl games during his term. Utah’s other athletic programs have also thrived under his leadership. The men’s basketball team has played in 15 NCAA Tournaments—advancing to the Sweet 16 six times and the Elite Eight twice. In 1998, the Runnin’ Utes played Kentucky for the NCAA Championship. The women’s basketball team also has 15 NCAA appearances, making the Sweet 16 twice and the Elite Eight once. The gymnastics team has made 20 NCAA Super Six appearances while qualifying for the NCAA Championships all 30 years with Hill as AD—and the ski team has finished first or second in the nation 15 times under his watch.

He has received a number of awards, including the following: 2011 National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) Under Armour West Region Athletic Director of the Year, finalist for the 2011 Athletic Director of the Year by SportsBusiness Journal and SportsBusiness Daily, 2011 Utah YMCA Man of the Year, 2004 Mountain West Conference’s Commissioner’s Award, 1981 Milton Bennion Fellowship, 1984 Utah Recreation Therapy Association Outstanding Service award and 1996 Utah MS Sportsperson of the Year.

The New Jersey native was inducted into the Jersey Shore Hall of Fame in 1998. In 2001, the National Consortium for Academics and Sports awarded him its Degree Completion and Outreach and Community Service Honor Award.

Hill has served in five capacities at the U., starting in 1973-74 as a graduate assistant basketball coach on Bill Foster’s staff. After coaching boys’ basketball at Salt Lake’s Granger High from 1975-79 (he was the 1975 4A Coach of the Year), Hill returned to the U. as an assistant coach to Jerry Pimm (197981). From 1983-85, he taught in the University’s special education department before becoming the athletic department’s Crimson Club director (1985-86).

In 1987, he was named the director of athletics.

Hill was the executive director of United Cerebral Palsy of Utah from 1981-85, during which time he developed a housing project for people with severe physical disabilities.

As an undergraduate, Hill won three letters in basketball at Rutgers and co-captained the 1971-72 team. His bachelor’s degree from Rutgers is in math education (1972). He holds a master’s in education (Utah, 1974), and a Ph.D. in educational administration (Utah, 1982).

His wife Kathy, a faculty member in the U.’s Department of Special Education in severe disabilities, received the 2010 College of Education Service Award and the 2012 ASUU Student Choice Award for

Excellence in Teaching. They have two children, Aly and Christopher; three granddaughters, Addie, Lily and Ayumi, and a grandson, Jack.

Aly played soccer for the University of Oregon and has a master’s degree in social work from Utah.

She teaches students with severe disabilities in the Salt Lake City School District. Christopher holds a bachelor’s and law degree from the U. He works in business strategy for ESPN and is married to Darci Motoki, who received her bachelor’s degree from Boston College and her master’s degree from Claremont Graduate University. She is a consultant for Accenture.

arry Krystkowiak heads into his seventh season as head coach of the Utah Runnin’ Utes. With more than 100 wins over the course of his first six seasons, to label his rebuilding of the program anything but a success would be an understatement.

Krystkowiak has accumulated 115 victories in his six seasons as head coach, which includes four consecutive 20-win seasons, a pair of NCAA Tournament berths and two NIT appearances. He is just the fifth coach in school history to register at least 100 wins with the program, joining former legendary coaches Vadal Peterson (385 wins), Jack H. Gardner (339), Rick Majerus (325) and Jerry Pimm (173).

Under Krystkowiak’s leadership, Utah is the only school in the Pac-12 to have a player selected in the first round of the NBA Draft over the past three seasons. Along with Delon Wright (2015, No. 20) and Jakob Poeltl (2016, No. 9), Kyle Kuzma went No. 27 overall in the 2017 NBA Draft.

During the 2016-17 campaign, Krystkowiak led the team to a 20-12 overall record, which included

going 11-7 in Pac-12 play and finishing fourth in the conference standings. Krystkowiak guided Utah to a 27-9 overall record and the second round of the NCAAs in 2015-16, which led to his being named the U.S. Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) District VIII Coach of the Year.

Utah defeated its highest-ranked opponent since 2002 when it took down No. 7 Duke at New York’s Madison Square Garden in December 2016. The Utes closed out the regular season with a program-best seven straight wins in Pac-12 Conference play to finish as the league runner-up for the first time ever. Utah also played in its first Pac-12 Tournament title game since it joined the league in 2011.

Jakob Poeltl earned 2015-16 Pac-12 Player of the Year honors–the program’s first POY since 2009. Poeltl would go on to be named the program’s second-consecutive consensus All-American under Krystkowiak, while also taking home the Pete Newell Big Man of the Year and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Center of the Year awards.

In 2014-15, Krystkowiak led the Utes to a 26-9 record, a berth in the NCAA Sweet 16 and a No. 15 final national ranking. Utah was ranked in the Top 25 for 19 weeks – the most time spent in the national polls since the Final Four campaign of 1997-98. Delon Wright won the 2016 Bob Cousy Award and was a Wooden All-American selection. The senior guard was also named a second team All-American by the USBWA and the NABC.

Academically, Utah’s program has achieved a 100 percent graduation rate under Krytkowiak and has one of the top three Academic Progress Report (APR) scores in the Pac-12. Brandon Taylor was named the program’s first-ever Pac-12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 2016.

Striving for success, both on and off the court, are trademarks of the Krystkowiak era. Due to improvements in both areas, the Utah head coach was rewarded with a contract extension that runs through the 2023-24 season.

The resurgence of Utah basketball under Krystkowiak has also ignited Utah’s fan base. The Utes have averaged more than 12,000 fans at home over the past three seasons.

Krystkowiak was introduced on April 4, 2011 as the 15th men’s basketball coach at the U., with prior head coaching experience in the NCAA, CBA and NBA.

In his previous collegiate head coaching post, Krystkowiak led his alma mater, the University

of Montana, to a 42-20 record and two NCAA appearances from 2004-06 before joining the NBA coaching ranks. Hired as an assistant coach by the Milwaukee Bucks in 2006-07, “Krysko” was elevated to head coach with 17 games remaining in the season.

He was retained as the Bucks’ head coach in 2007-08.

Among the players he coached was former Ute AllAmerican Andrew Bogut. Krystkowiak’s other head coaching experience was in the CBA with the Idaho Stampede in 2003-04.

After a nine-year NBA playing career in six cities, Krystkowiak’s first coaching job was as an assistant coach at Montana from 1998-2000. The Grizzlies were the Big Sky champions in 2000. He then moved on to Old Dominion as an assistant in 2001-02 before signing on as the head coach of the CBA’s Idaho Stampede. In his lone season with the Stampede in 2003-04, he led the team to a 38-14 record and a berth in the CBA Finals.

Krystkowiak spent the next two seasons as the head coach at Montana. The Grizzlies were Big Sky champions in 2004-05, winning the conference tournament and earning an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. They appeared in the Big Dance in 2006 as well, earning an at-large bid and advancing to the second round with an upset victory over fifth-seed Nevada. It was UM’s first NCAA tournament win since 1975. Montana finished the season with a 24-7 record, after going 18-13 in Krystkowiak’s first season, losing

The only three-time Big Sky MVP in league history and two-time Academic All-American for Montana from 1982-86, Krystkowiak is still the school’s all-time career leader in points (2,017) and rebounds (1,105). He was selected in the second round (28th overall pick) of the 1986 NBA draft by the Chicago Bulls and played in the league for nine years with San Antonio (1986-87), Milwaukee (1988-92), Utah (1992-93), Orlando (1993-94), Chicago (199496) and the Los Angeles Lakers (1996). Over his NBA career, he averaged 8.1 points and 4.1 rebounds a game with his best season in 1988-89 when he averaged 12.7 points and 7.6 rebounds a game for Milwaukee.

Krystkowiak made the Dean’s List four times at Montana, including in 1996, when he completed the degree he began over a decade earlier in business administration. He graduated with honors, boasting a 3.5 grade point average.

Krystkowiak and his wife Jan have five children, sons Cam, Luc, and Ben, along with twin daughters Samantha and Finley.

ommy Connor is in his seventh year as a Utah assistant coach under head coach Larry Krystkowiak. During the summer of 2014, Connor was elevated to the title of associate head coach.

This is Connor’s second stint with the Utes, following four years as an assistant under the late Rick Majerus from 1994-97. Connor, a former Utah player (1986-88, 1990), returned to his alma mater after a very successful 12-year stint as the head coach at Westminster College (NAIA).

Connor was a four-year starter for the Runnin’ Utes at point guard. After graduating with a B.S. in Exercise and Sport Science, he spent three years as a graduate assistant and another four years as an assistant coach at Utah under Majerus. During his time on the bench, Connor helped guide Utah to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen and Elite Eight as well as the NIT “Final Four”, while capturing four Western Athletic Conference championships.

In a stellar 12-year career at Westminster, Connor led the Griffins to a 264-114 (.698) overall record, while proving even more dominant in Frontier Conference play with a 126-40 (.759) mark.

Those numbers become more impressive when considering that Connor built the program from scratch after it was reinstated prior to the 1999-2000 season.

Under Connor, Westminster posted 10 seasons with at least 20 wins, including nine straight from 2002-2011.

The Griffins won seven regular-season Frontier Conference championships and two conference tournament titles.

Connor was a five-time Frontier Conference Coach of the Year and his teams qualified for nine NAIA National Championship appearances.

Connor coached 17 players to NAIA All-American status and had one NAIA National Player of the Year. The Griffins also had five players named Frontier Conference Player of the Year and saw 36 players earn all-conference honors. Westminster was also successful in the classroom as 44 players earned NAIA Scholar Athlete honors and 108 players were named Academic All-Frontier Conference.

DeMARLO SLOCUM

D

eMarlo Slocum is now in his seventh year as an assistant coach with the Utes following a threeyear stint in the same position at Colorado State.

In his now eight seasons overall at both Utah and CSU, Slocum has worked primarily with the guards and shared recruiting responsibilities. Before coming to Colorado State, Slocum served as an assistant coach at the University of Idaho.

Prior to joining the Idaho Vandals, Slocum was the head coach of the Las Vegas Prospects AAU team for five years. During his tenure, the Prospects were ranked among the top five AAU teams on the west coast. Slocum has worked at various collegiate basketball development camps across America, as well as the West Coast All-Star Camp and the Adidas Superstar Camp.

Slocum, a native of Las Vegas, also served one season as an assistant coach at Dixie State College before moving on to the University of Southern California to become the Trojans’ Director of Basketball Operations. In one season with USC, Slocum was in charge of on-campus recruiting, team travel, scouting and camp coordination.

As a student-athlete, Slocum spent two years at Dixie State before playing his final two seasons at Georgia Southern, where he earned a degree in public recreation/kinesiology in 2001. During his junior season at Georgia Southern, he was the team’s second-leading scorer, before finishing fourth in scoring as a senior.

Slocum just recently earned a Masters in Educational Leadership, receiving the degree from Grand Canyon University in the Summer of 2016.

ndy Hill is in his seventh year as an assistant coach with the Utes. He came to Utah from Montana, where he spent seven years in the same role, including two seasons under current Runnin’ Ute Head Coach Larry Krystkowiak.

In his seven seasons at Montana, Hill helped the Grizzlies to three NCAA Tournament appearances, most recently in 2010, as well as a CBI bid in 2011.

Montana also reached the Big Sky Conference Tournament championship game in four of his seven seasons. In Hill’s two years under Krystkowiak from 2004-06, Montana went 42-20 and earned an NCAA Tournament berth both years, advancing to the second round in 2006.

Among Hill’s duties at Montana were assisting with scheduling of games, coordinating camps, oncourt coaching and recruiting. Additionally, he was instrumental in coordinating the annual coaching clinics and also worked closely with the fund-raising efforts of UM’s Roundball Club.

Hill served as a graduate assistant coach during the 2003-04 season at Eastern Washington, which won the Big Sky Conference that year. While at EWU, Hill was involved in the promotion of the Eagles’ camps and assisted in recruiting as well.

During the 2001-02 and 2002-03 seasons Hill served as an assistant at Lewis-Clark State College in Lewiston, Idaho. In his two seasons, the Warriors advanced to consecutive NAIA National Tournaments.

He was also an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Whitworth College in Spokane, Wash., during the 2000-01 season.

Hill graduated from Eastern Washington in 2000 with a degree in education.

He is married to Skye Lazaro of Hot Springs, Montana and they have one son, Garrett.

BASKETBALL SUPPORT STAFF assistant at Westminster College from 2003-04 before making his way to the U.

Jones played collegiately at Utah for two seasons (1993-94) and was part of the 1993 team that won the Western Athletic Conference regular season championship and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

He graduated from Utah in 1994 with a bachelor’s degree in sociology.

CHRIS JONES Director of Operations hris Jones returned to the University of Utah prior to the 2016-17 season and will now head into his second season with the Utes as Director of Men’s Basketball Operations.

A familiar face to the program, Jones previously served as the video coordinator for the Runnin’ Utes from 1995-97 under former head coach Rick Majerus. He later served as the director of ops from 2005-07 before making the move to the bench as an assistant coach from 2006-08.

Jones was a member of the staff for Runnin’Ute teams that went to the NCAA second round in 1995, the Sweet 16 in ‘96 and the Elite Eight in ‘97.

During that time, Utah had an 84-17 overall record and a 45-7 mark in WAC play, winning three regular-season championships. The Utes posted a 29-4 record in 1996-97, finishing the season ranked No. 2 in the Associated Press poll and No. 6 in the coaches poll. Jones helped develop All-Americans Keith Van Horn, Andre Miller and Michael Doleac.

Jones spent the previous eight seasons as an assistant coach at Utah State where his primary duties included coaching the guards, as well as in-state recruiting. He was also in charge of a USU defense that led the Western Athletic Conference in points allowed four times in five years, and in field goal percentage defense for three out of five years.

Jones began his coaching career in London, England as the head coach of Wurthing Bears from 1998-99 before spending three years as an instructor at Champions Athletic Academy. He then returned to the collegiate ranks as an

A Utah native, Jameson graduated from Taylorsville High School in 1987.

He and his wife, Angie, have five children: Tui, Moevanu, Malia, Tavita and Masina.

Director of Sports Medicine revor Jameson is in his 19th year as an athletic trainer with the University of Utah. In 2008, he also accepted the position of Director of Sports Medicine for the Utah Athletic Training program. His primary responsibility is working with the Runnin’ Ute basketball team.

Before coming to Utah, Jameson spent four years as an assistant athletic trainer and instructor at DePauw University in Indiana. In addition to working with DePauw athletes, Jameson assisted in the development of the department’s CAAHEP accredited athletic training education program and provided clinical instruction for students.

Prior to his appointment at DePauw, Jameson worked as a graduate assistant trainer at Indiana State University. Jameson received his master’s degree in athletic training from Indiana State in August of 1996 and earned the Outstanding Professional Award for his graduating class.

Jameson received his bachelor’s degree in physical education and athletic training from Brigham Young University in 1995. He worked in the Cougar sports medicine department for over two years.

SCOTT McBYRNE Video Coordinator cott McByrne is in his seventh year as the Video Coordinator for Utah Men’s Basketball. McByrne originally joined the Utes midway through the 2011-12 season after spending two seasons with the New Jersey Nets of the NBA.

With the Nets, McByrne was an assistant video coordinator under head coach Avery Johnson from 2010-11 and an intern under previous head coach Lawrence Frank, from 2009-10.

During the 2010-11 season McByrne also worked alongside current Utah head coach Larry Krystkowiak, who was then an assistant coach with New Jersey. Other notable coaches McByrne has worked with include Popeye Jones, Del Harris, John Loyer, Sam Mitchell and Kiki Vandeweghe.

McByrne is originally from Newtown, Pennsylvania, where he attended Council Rock High School South and was captain of the basketball team. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Secondary Social Studies Education from the University of Tampa in 2008.

McByrne married the former Carly Xaiz in the summer of 2017. The couple have a daughter, Emma.

CHARLES STEPHENSON Director of Men’s Basketball Sports Performance harles Stephenson, who joined the Utah men’s basketball staff as the first basketball-specific strength coach in the program’s history, enters his sixth season with the Runnin’ Ute program.

Stephenson brings nearly 25 years of experience as a strength coach at the collegiate level. Most recently, he was the strength coach for men’s basketball at North Carolina State from 1996-2011 and previously held the same position at Auburn from 1994-96.

Prior to Auburn, he was an assistant strength and conditioning coach at the University of Virginia from 1987-94.

Stephenson earned his master’s degree in exercise physiology from UVA in 1989 and did his undergraduate work at the College of William & Mary, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in physical education.

Stephenson and his wife, Diane, have four children, Tyler, Shea, Quinn and Carsyn.

UTAH’S GREATEST TOP TEAMS AAU National Champions – 1916

After the Utes beat the defending national champion Olympic Club of San Francisco by 20 points on March 1 in Salt Lake City, a groundswell of support raised enough money to send the team to Chicago in search of a national title. The Utes defeated the Olympic Club again in the semifinals and took down the Illinois Athletic Club, 28-27, for its first national title and an 11-0 season.

NCAA Runner-Up – 1998

Utah took down defending national champion Arizona, 76-51, in the West Regional final and No. 1-ranked North Carolina, 65-59, in the national semifinals at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.

The Runnin’ Utes fell to Kentucky in the title game as a deep Wildcat team overcame a double-digit second half deficit. Utah, led by head coach Rick Majerus and All-Americans Andre Miller and Michael Doleac, tied the school record with 30 wins.

NCAA Champions – 1944

The Utes were invited to both the NIT and the NCAA Tournament at the end of the 1944 season, but chose the former. At the time, the NIT was a much better tournament financially. After Utah lost to Kentucky in the NIT first round, head coach Vadal Peterson received a phone call from the NCAA asking them to participate in their tournament as a late fill-in for Arkansas, which was involved in an automobile accident. The Utes quickly accepted and headed to Kansas City, where they beat Missouri and Iowa State to advance to the championship game back in New York’s Madison Square Garden. Utah defeated Dartmouth, 42-40 in overtime to win the title. A few days later in a Red Cross Benefit game, Utah defeated NIT champion St. John’s, 43-36.

The Utes won the three games in the tournament by a total of seven points and took down Kentucky, 49-45, in the championship game. The starters from the 1947 NIT title team were (left to right) Wat Misaka, Fred Weidner, Arnie Ferrin, Vern Gardner and Leon Watson. Ferrin, Misaka and Dick Smuin were veterans of the ’44 NCAA Championship run but center Vern Gardner garnered tournament MVP honors. Fred Weidner also played a major part in the championship.

ith Kyle Kuzma being selected in the 2017 NBA Draft, Utah became the only school from the Pac-12 to have had at least one player taken in the draft the past three seasons. Kuzma, who was taken No. 27 overall by Brooklyn and traded to the L.A. Lakers, joins Delon Wright (2015) and Jakob Poeltl (2016), who were both selected by the Toronto Raptors.

It also marked the first since 1998-2000 that Utah had a player selected in three consecutive

seasons when Michael Doleac was selected 12th overall in 1998, Andre Miller went eighth overall in 1999 and Hanno Mottola was taken in the second round (40th overall) in 2000. This is the first time since 1997-99 that Utah has had a player selected in the first round of the NBA Draft in three consecutive seasons. The last time it happened, Keith Van Horn went second overall in 1997, followed by the selections of Doleac (1998) and Miller (1999).

The Utah men’s basketball team traveled abroad on a 10-day European Tour, which took the squad through Barcelona, Spain, and Paris, France. The Utes played a total of three games throughout their tour, taking on a pair of teams while in Barcelona and then playing one contest during their time in Paris.

he Utah men’s basketball team makes dozens of public appearances each year and gives back to the Salt Lake City community in numerous ways.

The Runnin’ Utes have taken part in Utah Athletics’ Fan Fest, the U.’s Employee Appreciation Day, the University of Utah Healthcare cancer awareness event, the Huntsman Cancer Center 5K, Fan

Appreciation Night at the Campus Store, the Holiday Food Drive with the Utah Food Bank, Christmas gift deliveries with the Utah Foster Care Foundation, visiting the VA Hospital, delivering season tickets to Utah fans, helping U. students move into the dorms, and delivering sandwiches and water to the homeless in Salt Lake City.

Ute players took part in the annual Fan Fest event last August at Rice-Eccles Stadium.

The Utes were on hand for the U.’s Employee Appreciation Day last fall.

Team IMPACT

The Utes have partnered up with Team IMPACT, a national nonprofit that connects children facing serious and chronic illnesses with a college sports team.

Through the program, they signed Nathan Watterson to a National Letter of Intent at signing ceremony in September with members of the Utah team and staff as well as Watterson’s family in attendance.

THE PAC-12 & ACADEMIC SUCCESS On To The NBA

Over the last five years, the Pac-12 Conference has produced 42 NBA Draft picks, including 23 firstround selections. Those totals are second only to the ACC, which has had 52 players selected overall and 30 in the first round. Fourteen Pac-12 players were taken in the 2017 NBA Draft, including six in the first round.

That number set a league record and tied for first among all conferences.

PAC-12 CONFERENCE

Built on a firm foundation of academic excellence and superior athletic performance, the Pac-12 Conference renewed its undisputed claim as the “Conference of Champions” in 2016-17, becoming the first conference to win 500 NCAA Championships.

The Pac-12’s success is as evident in men’s basketball as any sport, where league teams have captured a record 16 NCAA Championships. The Pac-12 also lays claim to 39 NCAA Final Four appearances, 93 Consensus All-Americans and 17 National Players of the Year.

The Pac-12 has sent at least half of its teams on to postseason play 26 times in the last 28 years, with four teams making the NCAA Tournament in 2017.

During that time, 13 league players have garnered National Player of the Year or National Freshman of the Year honors.

In 2016-17, a record three teams had 30 wins and four reached 25 wins for just the second time ever.

Three teams finished in the AP top 10, with Oregon at No. 3, Arizona No. 4 and UCLA No. 9.

All-Pac-12 Utes

Utah has had three players earn All-Pac-12 First Team honors over the last four seasons. Delon Wright was a first team selection in both 2014 and 2015, while Jakob Poeltl was named a first team selection in 2016.

Kyle Kuzma was a first team All-Pac-12 pick in 2017.

Poeltl also earned 2015-16 Pac-12 Conference Player of the Year honors while Brandon Taylor was named the 2015-16 Pac-12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year for men’s basketball.

Television Exposure

The Pac-12 Conference men’s basketball television package will feature a total of 224 contests telecast to national and regional audiences. Pac-12 Conference controlled broadcasts include 152 events to be aired on Pac-12 Networks (including seven preseason events and eight Pac-12 Tournament games), 45 games on ESPN/ESPN2/ESPNU, 23 on FS1 (including three Pac-12 Tournament games) and two nationally each on FOX and CBS broadcast networks.

Additional appearances will be made through other conference television agreements and various in-season tournaments to bring the comprehensive broadcast total to more than 260 events.

All 29 of Utah’s regularseason contests will be televised this upcoming season. The Utes will have a total of 15 games televised on the Pac-12 Network and 10 games aired on the ESPN family of networks, to include ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNU. The remaining five regular-season

games will be aired via Fox Sports broadcasts (FOX, FS1). All games aired on the ESPN family of networks will be available through WatchESPN, while contests on FOX/FS1 can be streamed via the Fox Sports Go app.

Any of Utah’s contests aired on the Pac-12 Network can be accessed via the Pac-12 NOW app.

CLASSROOM CHAMPIONS

For everything the Runnin’ Utes have achieved on the court, they have been equally successful in the classroom. In Larry Krystkowiak’s program, the focus is on developing well-rounded studentathletes. The graduation rate of Utah basketball players within six years from the time they enrolled as freshmen is 100 percent.

Utah ranked second among Pac-12 schools with a total of two players on either the Academic All-Conference first or second teams in 2016-17. David Collette and Parker Van Dyke were on the second team and Jake Connor earned honorable mention.

Over the last five years, Utah has placed 11 players on either the Pac-12 All-Academic first or second teams, and six others have earned honorable mention. Brandon Taylor and Jeremey Olsen were both three-time Pac-12 All-Academic First Team selections.

The Scholarship Circle is a group of Crimson Club members – individuals and companies – who generously support student-athletes at the University of Utah by providing full and annual scholarships. Richard was the one who really helped me to get better as a player and as a big man.”

Jokl’s decision to make the move away from his family in the Czech Republic ended up being the right choice to further his basketball career. Jokl had always wanted to pursue playing basketball in the United States, and attending the Canarias Basketball Academy allowed him the opportunity to be seen by colleges that recruiting overseas, which included Utah.

“I really liked Utah because of the coaching staff and facilities,” Jokl said. “But one of the biggest reasons I came was because I knew Jakob Poeltl, and we had talked about college and that type of stuff. He is a big man like me from Europe and he was able to help me see where I would fit in the most.”

While the idea of coming to the U.S. to play NCAA Division I basketball seemed exciting, there was also a huge culture shock for Jokl. He was faced with many changes from his lifestyle in Europe.

“Everything is different for me now,” Jokl explained. “I have to speak English all the time, do my schoolwork in English, and I am so far away from my family. The language has definitely been the hardest part. I started learning English in elementary school but I hadn’t used it as often as I have to now. I am starting to get a lot better with more practice.”

“It is also hard being away from home, but technology allows me to call and FaceTime my family and friends a lot, which makes it not so bad. During the summer, I get to go home for about a month and a half, so I am happy that I can see them then.”

Not only have the cultural and social parts of Jokl’s life changed, so has basketball. Gaining a better understanding of the English language has been a huge component of improving his game since Jokl has had to learn the terminology in a different language and comprehend what the coaches are trying to get across. Jokl has also been forced to adapt to the differences in the rules and style of play between the European and American games.

“Here in the U.S., basketball has more to do with running plays and having specific systems set up. In Europe, basketball for me was about making more of my own decisions. The style of play had more passing and not really any set plays. Both are styles are good, but are just different,” Jokl explained.

Even though fulfilling his dream of playing college basketball forced Jokl to change continents, he has certainly enjoyed his time in Utah and believes strongly in the choice he made. Besides enjoying the coaches, the facilities and competing against Pac-12 programs, Jokl has built a new family away from his loved ones in the Czech Republic.

“Even though I am so far from home, I really like Utah because of my teammates. Everyone is so nice and cares about each other. Our whole group has become like family, and it is special for me to have that because my own family isn’t around for me. To have my teammates be like my brothers, it is great.

I am really excited to see what we can do this year,” Jokl said with a smile.

rowing up in a family with a rich basketball tradition can be great; and it can be tough. After all, the pressure to follow in the footsteps of those who came before you can be overwhelming for some. But that didn’t affect Beau Rydalch.

Starting at a young age, Rydalch knew that basketball was the sport for him. He sensed it the first time he picked up a ball. Rydalch also played football when he was younger and stayed with the game until his freshman year of high school when he injured his knee. After that, Rydalch decided to focus solely on basketball.

“I first started playing basketball when I was

around two or three years old,” Rydalch remembers.

“My dad got a sport court in our backyard and I first started playing out there with my brothers. We lowered the hoop at first, and as we got older we would gradually move the hoop up.”

Coming from a basketball family, Rydalch was very fortunate to have a great mentor in his father, Craig, who lettered for the Utes from 1990-92 and was a team captain at the end of his career. His uncle Mark played at the U. from 1993-96. Having a father who knows what it takes to play at a high level was tremendous help in Rydalch’s development.

“My dad has been a big influence to me on the court,” Rydalch said. “He has been a coach for me my whole life and that has really helped me develop as a basketball player.”

Off the court, Rydalch says that both of his parents have taught him well and helped him develop the core values that he lives by and can pass on to his children.

“There is kind of a give and take side to it with both my mom and my dad. My dad especially has been a big influence to me on and off the court, and my mom has been such a big moral supporter,” Rydalch explained.

For Rydalch, the move from playing in Class 2A, one of the Utah’s smaller size high school levels, to NCAA Division I was already going to be tough. But add a two-year LDS church mission into the equation, and that has made the transition much harder.

“It was a huge, huge jump,” Rydalch confided.

“Right after high school, I went on my mission and I lost a lot because I wasn’t able to play when I was in South America. It was definitely a huge transition getting back into shape after I came back.”

When Rydalch returned from his mission to Ecuador, teammate Parker Van Dyke was coming back from his mission as well. Rydalch and Van Dyke played on the same AAU team, so the two decided to work out together as they got prepared to get back into competitive basketball.

Rydalch, who is 6-foot-6, studied many NBA players while growing up so he could implement the things they did into his own game. That helped Rydalch become a complete player who was a dominant force his senior year of high school when he shot 56 percent from the field and 42 percent from 3-point range.

“Because I played at such a small school, I had to play everything from point guard to the five spot,” Rydalch explained. “I would watch a lot of Larry Bird and LeBron James just to see how they would play multiple positions during their careers.”

As the season gets underway, Rydalch has set a few goals that he would like to accomplish, and he believes those goals can help him make a positive impact on the team. Rydalch is a big believer that achieving small goals will be good stepping stones toward becoming an impact player off the bench for the Utes.

“I’d like to get more consistent reps in, especially during practice time,” Rydalch said. “I feel I’ve been starting to make more of an impact on my teammates, whether it’s leadership from the sideline or on the court, and just helping people understand what they are supposed to do in certain sets.”

Rydalch is determined to reach his goals even more this season as he enters his second year with the program.
