After long and highly distinguished careers with other collaborators, Richard Rodgers (composer, 1902–79) and

Oscar Hammerstein II (librettist/lyricist, 1895– 1960) joined forces in the early ’40s to create the most successful partnership in the American musical theater. Oklahoma! (1943), the first Rodgers & Hammerstein musical, was also the first of a new genre, the musical play, blending Rodgers’ sophisticated style of musical comedy (which he had perfected in a 25-year partnership with lyricist Lorenz Hart) with Hammerstein’s innovations in operetta (conceived in collaboration with such composers as Sigmund Romberg, Vincent Youmans, Rudolf Friml and Jerome Kern). Over the next 16 years, R&H wrote eight more Broadway musicals: Carousel, Allegro, South Pacific, The King and I, Me and Juliet, Pipe Dream, Flower Drum Song and The Sound of Music. They wrote one movie musical, State Fair, subsequently adapted to the stage, and one for television, “Cinderella.” First broadcast live with Julie Andrews in 1957, remade with Lesley Ann Warren (1965), and again with Whitney

The Gateway

What to do Downtown Before or After the Show By Nick Como, Downtown Alliance

Regent Street On the backside of the Eccles Theater is Salt Lake City’s newest festival street: Regent Street. Home to several restaurants and a pedestrian plaza, Regent connects City Creek Center to Gallivan Center, as well as accessing parking at the Walker Center garage. Being centrally located to downtown’s best cultural and entertainment options is quickly turning Regent into the heartbeat of the city. Over $2 million dollars will be invested in public art along this block, so a visit to Regent will look and feel different each time. Perfect for a stroll, a slice of pizza at Fireside on Regent before or after a show, or to catch one of the many programmed outdoor performances on Regent Street’s McCarthy Plaza rounds out the Eccles Theater experience.

The Gateway On downtown’s west side a renaissance is underway. Just as the Eccles Theater changed the face of Main Street, The Gateway Regent Street

is experiencing a facelift of its own. The ubiquitous clock tower is decked out in LED boards, and events from gospel brunch to yoga and chalk art to Italian festivals ensure there is always a litany of activities at The Gateway. While several shopping options exist - think Sur la Table, Buckle, Abercrombie & Fitch - the focus has quickly shifted to entertainment. Mainstays for children, including Discovery Gateway and Clark Planetarium offer imaginative and educational options for the whole family. The Larry H Miller Megaplex features blockbuster movies (pun intended) and dozens of restaurants, including several new options, provides fuel for a full day of activity at The Gateway.

Family-Friendly Dining Finding casual and formal options is never a challenge downtown. At City Creek Center diners can choose from Cheesecake Factory, who truly have something for everyone on their menu, BRIO for Italian or Blue Lemon for healthy eats. City Creek’s food court is like a greatest hits album (or is that CD or playlist now?) of Utah favorites. Red Iguana, Bocata, McDonalds, Sbarro and much much more are all available. With centralized seating, families can choose meals from a variety of options and enjoy together. Temple Square has several options as well: The Roof Restaurant for incredible views and a traditional Utah menu, the Lion House has the state’s (possibly the world’s) best rolls and Nauvoo Cafe’s cafeteria style setup is great for something quick.

Pleiku meal

A quick walk along Main Street offers up cuisine from any corner of the world. Michelangelo’s on Main serves Italian, Boulangerie’s French pastries, baked items and sandwiches are slice out of Paris, the venerable Lambs Grill is a throwback to American classics and Pleiku’s rice and pho satisfy a craving for Vietnamese and Asian fusion dishes. Venture a halfblock east or west off Main and the options become limitless, all within less than a five or ten minute walk. Enjoy the show!
