Who’s Who in the Cast DOUGLAS McGRATH (Book) is a filmmaker and playwright. His play Checkers opened the 30th anniversary season at New York’s Vineyard Theatre. He collaborated with Woody Allen on the screenplay for Bullets Over Broadway, for which they were nominated for an Academy Award. His first film as writer/director was his adaptation of Jane Austen’s Emma. He has also written and directed Nicholas Nickleby, which won the Best Ensemble Cast from the National Board of Review; Company Man; Infamous; and His Way. His essays have appeared in the New Yorker, The New Republic, Vanity Fair and The New York Times. GERRY GOFFIN (Words and Music). Born in Brooklyn in 1939, Gerry Goffin met Carole King at Queens College, and their musical collaboration began almost immediately. They married in 1959, and that same year wrote their first hit song “Will You Love Me Tomorrow?” (The Shirelles). The duo penned more than 50 Top-40 hits including “The Locomotion,” “Natural Woman” and “Up on the Roof.” In 1987, Goffin and King were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990. Goffin has left an indelible mark on American music. CAROLE KING (Words and Music). Pop music would be very different without the contributions of Carole King, who at age 17 wrote her first #1 hit with Gerry Goffin, “Will You Love Me Tomorrow,” for the Shirelles. The dozens of chart hits Goffin and King wrote during this period became legendary, but it was 1971’s Tapestry that took King to the pinnacle, speaking personally to her contemporaries and providing a spiritual musical backdrop to the decade. More than 400 of her compositions have been recorded by over 1,000 artists, resulting in 100 hit singles and six Grammys. four seasons - a million reasons
Downtown: Eat, Shop & Play in The Capital City By Nick Como, Downtown Alliance
The beehive is a buzz of year-round activity, with plenty to see and do before the curtain drops and after the cast takes their final bow. With world-class dining, unique shopping options and a plethora of public spaces, downtown Salt Lake City is flush with amenities to bookend your theater experience. Make a day, evening or even weekend of it! PRE-SHOW BITES Head to Martine Cafe (22 E 100 S), a short half-block north of the Eccles Theater. If you parked at City Creek Center (pro tip: first two hours are free) this historic redstone building is right on your way. Offering a theatre menu running the gamut from brussel sprouts to pork belly along with the requisite salads, this Salt Lake dining institution promises to have theater-goers out in time to grab their seats for the show. Martine is offering 2 for 1 Bar Bites and/or Small Plates for theater-goers between 5pm–6:30pm on show nights and also offers a well appointed wine list, as well as creative cocktails.
COCKTAILS AND A LATE BITE The options are really limitless on any given evening downtown. Italian? Yup (Caffe Molise - 55 W 100 S). Tapas? We’ve got that, too (Eva’s - 155 S Main). Looking for variety, in a cosmopolitan setting? Bambara,
located in the uber-hip Hotel Monaco is a favorite amongst astute travelers and savvy locals, alike. The adjacent Vault, which is a former bank vault form the building’s heyday, is now the restaurant’s bar and is open late offering plates from the Bambara kitchen. Chef Power’s House Cut Blue Cheese Chips are a decadent starter to die for; don’t miss it. Couples and groups can choose from cheese boards, seafood and game from just the appetizer menu to nibble on while reminiscing highlights from the theater experience. The dinner menu is served late for especially hungry diners. The Vault serves beer, wine and a full list of creative cocktails and friendly bartenders (look for my favorite, Julie), and once the evening is ready for the next act, step next door to The Red Door (57 W 200 S). This classic martini bar, with one of the most original cocktail lists in the city and, of course, classic drinks are available as well. The decor at the Red Door is just as bold as a strong drink: drenched in deep reds and blacks, this slice of Salt Lake could easily be in Paris, Moscow or New York. Decked out in your best theater-ready outfits, you’ll fit right in. Advertorial
Downtown: Eat, Shop & Play in The Capital City
SHOP TIL YOU DROP City Creek Center, stretching across Main Street with its signature skybridge, is a destination unto itself. Shopping for jewelry the afternoon before the show? Pandora or Tiffany & Co. have you covered. New suit for the guys? Head to Brooks Brothers. Window shopping has been redefined at the Center: a stream follows in your footsteps under a retractable glass roof. Nature and urban combine for an unforgettable shopping experience at City Creek Center in the heart of Salt Lake.
The Broadway district (300 S, from State Street to 300 E) features one-ofa-kind shopping options just a block and a half south of Eccles Theater. These unique mom & pop style shops run the gamut from antique toys (Jitterbug 243 E 300 S) to fine art (Modern West 177 E 300 S) and include vintage and rare options, too: furniture (Green Ant 179 E 300 S) and books (Ken Sanders 268 S 200 E) can be found only steps apart.

SEE, AND BE SEEN Salt Lake City’s number one tourist attraction, Temple Square, is worth a visit in every season of the year. One of the finest urban gardens in summer gives way to an impressive holiday light display in winter. Take in the stunning architecture of the Salt Lake Temple, which took four decades to build over a century and a half ago, as well as the Tabernacle and Conference Center buildings all within the two-block center of the city. Best of all, entrance to Temple Square is free, and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints also offers complimentary 45-minute guided tours for visitors. And speaking of free tours, the Jingle Bus, a holiday-themed free hop on, hop-off bus offers around downtown through Dec 31. With stops at Temple Square, City Creek, Gallivan Plaza and The Gateway the Jingle Bus is perfect for getting in the holiday spirit on a tour of downtown’s best light displays and shopping destinations.
