Onstage Ogden January/February Cover pre-printed

The start of a new year is always an exciting time, and this year, it feels especially meaningful as we continue to celebrate our 75th anniversary season. For Onstage Ogden, it’s not just a milestone—it’s a chance to reflect on the legacy built by hundreds, if not thousands of volunteers, board members, and staff since 1949.

We’re kicking off 2025 with a lineup that highlights the incredible range of live performance: the precision of Trinity Irish Dance’s JIG, the humor of One-Man Star Wars Trilogy, the artistry of harpist Maeve Gilchrist, and the bigcity sounds of Utah Symphony’s Bravo Broadway!. These performances remind us why the arts matter—creating shared experiences that inspire, unite, and celebrate, making Northern Utah a great place to call home. We’re also grateful for the community support that continues to sustain this work. Thanks to many of you, our recent year-end campaign was one of the most successful ever, bolstered by a $75,000 matching challenge from the Val A. Browning Charitable Foundation. There’s still time to participate in the match through the end of this season, doubling the impact of your generosity.

Thank you for being part of this journey. Your support— whether through attendance, donations, or simply talking about an amazing experience you had with friends and neighbors—ensures that the arts continue to thrive here in Northern Utah. We hope to see you at a performance again soon.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

JIG, a Trinity Irish Dance Company (TIDC) production, is a fresh take on TIDC’s internationally-renowned, alternative approach to a traditional form. Centered by a live band in a unique space, JIG immerses audiences in an authentic experience that celebrates the power of vibrations, rhythm and movement. Following its critically-acclaimed premiere season, JIG continues to redefine what is possible for Irish music and dance.

ABOUT THE COMPANY

TIDC is constantly in search of an original means of expression while maintaining a high regard for tradition. This cutting-edge nonprofit company was created to celebrate the pioneering work of Founding Artistic Director Mark Howard. Founded in 1990, Howard’s uniquely Irish-American company was the birthplace of progressive Irish dance, an innovative movement genre which opened new avenues of artistic freedom that led directly to commercial productions such as “Riverdance.”

Considered an American treasure by critics and enthusiasts worldwide, TIDC has performed sold-out tours in Europe, Asia, and North America, appearing in distinguished venues, such as New York’s The Joyce Theater, Washington D.C.’s Kennedy Center, UCLA’s Royce Hall, Ottawa’s National Arts Center of Canada, Tokyo’s Orchard Hall, and Chicago’s Auditorium Theatre, among many others.

For more about JIG and Trinity Irish Dance Company, visit trinityirishdancecompany.com

Howard is an Emmy Award-winning choreographer celebrated for his ability to transform craft into art and create innovative traditions. Born in Yorkshire, England, and raised in Chicago, he began dancing at age eight and started teaching at 17. By 20, he founded the Trinity Academy

of Irish Dance, leading them to multiple World Championship titles for the U.S.

In the late 80s, Howard shifted from competitive dance to the performing arts, which culminated in the establishment of the Trinity Irish Dance Company (TIDC) in 1990. TIDC has received critical acclaim worldwide.

A regular guest on The Tonight Show from 1989 to 1991, Howard has numerous television and film credits, including work with Disney and coaching actors Tom Hanks and Daniel Craig for Road to Perdition. He continues to choreograph and is developing a feature film screenplay titled SOLES. Recognized with multiple Choreographer’s Fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, he has been named one of Irish American Magazine’s “Top 100 Irish-Americans” three times and received honors from iBAM! and Chicago’s Lawyers For the Creative Arts.

At just 29, Chelsea Hoy has emerged as a significant force in the performing arts. A Denver native, she is known for her creativity and rebellious spirit, which have profoundly influenced TIDC’s latest works, including Communion, Soles, and Push. Hoy co-choreographed Taking the Mick with Howard, following their successful collaboration An Sorcas (The Circus), which premiered in Chicago’s historic Auditorium Theatre. Growing up dancing competitively with the Wick School of Irish Dance in Denver, Hoy joined TIDC in 2014 while studying at Loyola University Chicago, where she earned degrees in Psychology and Photography. In addition to being a professional photographer and dance instructor, she is dedicated to empowering children through the arts, shaping TIDC’s outreach programs. A passionate activist and artist, Hoy plays a vital role in guiding the company’s future.

THE BAND

BRENDAN O’SHEA (Guitar, vocals and composer) is a singer-songwriter originally from Killarney, Ireland who moved to the United States in the late 90′s. Since then, he has become a veteran of New York City’s songwriter scene and has released five albums that have garnered praise from critics and press around the world. TIDC’s lead singer for over 25 years, with or without a guitar in hand, O’Shea excels at drawing people in. His latest album “Midatlantic Ghost,” a beautiful acoustic record with songs of leaving and of love, is available on iTunes. Visit www. brendanosheamusic.com for more info.

CHRISTOPHER DEVLIN (Guitar and vocals) is a Chicago-based musician who began playing guitar at 8 years old. He has since grown as a multi-instrumentalist trained in piano, drums, accordion, fiddle and more. Devlin has been a collaborator with varied musical

acts across the country and is currently playing with the Chicago band Rookie. Dedicated to community and culture, Devlin is a founding member of the Treehouse Collective, which owns one of the most prestigious recording studios in Chicago. Devlin is working on opening “The Workshop”: an accessible studio for Chicago artists in need of a space to create. Devlin took his first trip to Japan with the company in 2016, and is incredibly honored to share his talents with TIDC on international stages.

JAKE JAMES (Fiddle and bódhran) is a two-time All-Ireland fiddle champion, bódhran player, and dancer from NYC. He won the Mid-Atlantic Fleadh Cheoil 7 years in a row on bodhrán and the All-Ireland Fleadh Cheoil twice on fiddle. Jake has performed and taught at various venues including the Irish Arts Center, BB King’s, Gracie Mansion, and Carnegie Hall. Jake recently moved to Chicago. His debut solo album, Firewood, was released in 2018. Currently a member of the band Runa, Jake received his M.A. in composition from the Aaron Copland School of Music.

STEVEN RUTLEDGE (Percussionist) is a Chicago-based freelance musician and music instructor with a strong passion for playing and teaching music. A proficient drummer and percussionist, he is also wellversed in guitar, bass guitar, and keyboards. Growing up in Portland, OR, Steven studied at the University of Oregon and received a B.A. in Drums Set and Percussion performance from Columbia College Chicago. While there, he spent three years studying privately with Chicago-based musician Tom Hipskind, who is currently one of the most sought-after drummers in Chicago. Rutledge has worked with several premiere Chicago acts including Woo Park, Nasty Snacks, North By North, Hanna Ashbrook, and is currently the Percussionist for Chicago acts such as STREGA, Uma Bloo, and Ari Lindo. He joined the TIDC band in 2018 for his first tour of Japan and is in the midst of his fourth touring season.

Canadian actor Charles Ross may have the best job in the world: professional Geek.

As writer and performer of One-Man Star Wars and One Man Lord of the Rings, he has toured the globe for the last 20 years, delighting audiences with his unique and frenetic solo shows.

Born in a northern British Columbian town (closely resembling the Shire), Charlie spent his early years longing for galaxies far, far away.

It was the discovery of a passion for acting (and a move to more southerly climes) that brought this geek-at-heart back to earth. At university, Ross formed a friendship and collaborating partnership with actor/writer/director, TJ Dawe. TJ has directed four of Ross’s solo shows- the first being the wildly successful One-Man Star Wars. After sold-out tours of North America’s Fringe theatre festivals, One-Man Star Wars and One-Man LOTR have taken on a life of their own.

Licensed by George Lucas and Saul Zaentz : carrying the official banner of Star Wars and Lord of the Rings- it’s fair to say that Charlie now dwells in geek heaven. With thousands of performances, in hundreds of cities, across four continents: from off-Broadway NYC to the Sydney Opera House, or the West End of London to the sands of Dubaichances are these shows have been there. The worldwide love affair with these Trilogies is phenomenal- and it’s been a dream come true, for Charlie Ross, to celebrate that love with the generations of fans around the world.

Born and raised in Edinburgh, Scotland, and currently based in Brooklyn, New York, Maeve‘s innovative approach to her instrument stretches its harmonic limits and improvisational possibilities. She tours internationally as a band leader and composer as well as belonging to a number of innovative collaborations including the prestigious Silkroad Ensemble, Arooj Aftab’s Vulture Prince Ensemble, progressive folk-quartet DuoDuo (featuring percussive dancer Nic Gareiss, cellist Natalie Haas and Yann Falquet of Quebecois super-group Genticorum) and a more electronics based project with Nashville—based bassist Viktor Krauss. She has appeared

at such major music events as Celtic Connections in Glasgow, Tanglewood Jazz Festival, the World Harp Congress in Amsterdam and the historic opening of the Scottish Parliament. She has played with such luminaries as Yo-Yo Ma, Esperanza Spalding, Tony Trishka, Ambrose Akinmusire, Darol Anger and Kathy Mattea.

Maeve has released five albums to date, including her most recent 2020 recording, The Harpweaver which was hailed by the Irish times in it’s five-star review as “Buoyant, sprightly and utterly beguiling….a snapshot of a musician at the top of her game.” Other albums include three recordings for the Adventure Music label including her 2017 release with bassist Viktor Krauss, Vignette and a self-released solo-album, the Ostinato Project is a beguiling exploration of the possibilities of her instrument. In 2018 Maeve was a featured soloist on the Dreamworks blockbuster movie soundtrack, How to tame your dragon: The hidden world.

Maeve was the first lever harpist to be employed as an instructor by her alma mater, Berklee College of Music in Boston, where she taught for five years before switching to being a visiting artist in 2018. She has written several instructional books published by Hal Leonard Music and 80 Days Publishing. She is also an in-demand composer and arranger, with past commissions including a ground-breaking concerto for lever harp and symphony orchestra co-written with North Carolina-based composer Luke Benton and several works for harp and string quartet including her three-movement piece Pastures Red premiered at the Edinburgh International Harp festival in 2018.
