About Ballet West
From Balanchine to Bournonville, Petipa to Tharp, Ballet West boasts a rich and varied repertoire, elegant and versatile artists, and an American style and legacy that is as dynamic, expansive, and as unexpected as the Rocky Mountain region it represents. From its humble beginnings in 1963 as the only professional ballet company between Chicago and the West Coast, Ballet West has grown into one of America’s leading ballet companies. For 60 years, the Salt Lake City-based Company has entertained and excited audiences in Utah and worldwide by presenting the great classical story ballets, including America’s first and longest-running version of The Nutcracker, revivals of rarelyseen historical masterpieces, works by some of the world’s most renowned artists, and new cutting-edge creations by emerging choreographers. The Company also regularly tours both nationally and internationally.
Ballet West was established in Salt Lake City by co-founders Willam F. Christensen, often called the “Godfather of American ballet,” and Utah’s “First Lady of the Arts,” Glenn Walker Wallace. In 1951, Christensen established the first ballet department in an American university at The University of Utah. Over time, this program grew into the Utah Civic Ballet, Ballet West’s first incarnation. Prior to that, along with his brothers, Lew and Harold, Christensen made history by establishing the oldest full-ballet company in the western United States, the San Francisco Ballet. Since its inception, Ballet West has had five artistic directors, who have each helped build the Company’s unique and expansive profile – its founder, Willam Christensen, Bruce Marks, John Hart CBE, Jonas Kåge, and for the past 16 years, Adam Sklute, who has overseen the artistic product for the longest sustained growth of the Company since its founding. Ballet West continues to grow and evolve with 38 company members, 14 second company members, a thriving Academy, and one of the world’s largest ballet-based Education and Outreach programs, reaching over 100,000 children and adults throughout Utah and the Intermountain Region every year.
The Frederick Quinney Lawson Ballet West (BW) Academy builds future ballet and dance artists and audiences by providing training in classical ballet, flamenco, character, contemporary, hip-hop, and theatrical dance training. The BW Academy has over 1,000 students between its four campuses, Salt Lake City, Trolley Corners, Park City, and Utah County. With newlyrenovated student housing, the BW Academy is home to local, national, and international ballet students, with more than 50% of BW Academy students joining Ballet West.
With this eclectic and ever-expanding outlook, Ballet West is truly an American pioneer in dance. By honoring the history and traditions of our great artform, while constantly moving forward with new and untried concepts, we continue to keep ballet in Utah and the world alive and thriving into the 21st Century and beyond.

17 23–24 SEASON
From the Artistic Director
Welcome to Ballet West’s Choreographic Festival VI and the final program of our 60th Anniversary Season.
All season we have presented a wide and varied spectrum of repertoire designed to highlight the scope of Ballet West’s mission to produce - with unwavering attention to stylistic details - classic full-length story ballets, historic masterpieces, works of the world’s most renowned choreographers, and new, untried, cutting-edge creation.
One of the first things I did when I began as Artistic Director of Ballet West seventeen years ago, was to create a program that would be a platform for new choreography, giving choreographers – both emerging and established – an opportunity to develop their ideas into fully realized works and giving our audiences an opportunity to be part of the discovery of the next great new work and choreographer. The first iteration of this festival was our Innovations program, which combined the presentation of new works by Ballet West company dancers and outside choreographers. It was important for me that all the choreographers felt they were producing works for a “real” program and not just a workshop situation. As the Innovations series grew, I chose to expand it into our Choreographic Festival, where we bring in guest choreographers to create on BW dancers and guest companies who perform alongside BW in their own new creations, and our Works from Within Series, where we focus exclusively on BW dancers as choreographers. My goal for these two programs is to alternate them from year to year, thus building a true laboratory for dancers, choreographers, and companies to experiment and take chances in ways that are rarely possible as part of most ballet companies’ main stages. I have dreamed of Utah becoming a hub for new choreography just as it has become for film. Indeed, in 2017 Dance Magazine dubbed Ballet West’s Choreographic Festival “The Sundance for Dance,” a moniker I hope we continue to live up to and build upon.
For this year’s festival, I have chosen to feature Asian and Asian-American leadership in classical ballet and recognize their integral contribution to the art-form. For an art form that has had so many brilliant Asian performers, ballet and dance in America has far too little Asian representation in choreography, composition, and directorship. And while it is my honor to celebrate Asian leadership in this program, I hope given time, we see more and more great Asian creators and leaders to bring ballet further into the 21st century.
We open the program with the world premiere of Play on Impulse by Caili Quan. Originally from Guam, Quan is a former dancer with BalletX out of Philadelphia. Quan is becoming a sought-after choreographer who combines her extensive ballet and contemporary training to create a fresh approach to dance. By combining movement that ranges from very pedestrian to highly complex technical steps, Quan creates a dialogue between dancers using different idioms. For this ballet, she has chosen a mix of different music to create a tapestry filled with humor, joy, and expression. Phil Chan is the founder of Final Bow to Yellowface – an organization committed to addressing and re-thinking how Asians and Asian culture are presented in ballet and the classical performing arts, thus building a more respectful representation. Chan is also a choreographer and stage director in his own right, recently having created new, re-thought production La Bayadere and Madame Butterfly around the United States. I am excited to present the Utah premiere of his personal choreography – the pas de deux Amber Waves to a musical score by Huang Ruo, as commissioned by Min Huang.
Another vibrant new voice in choreography is Zhong-Jing Fang. Fang is a soloist dancer with American Ballet Theater, who started her dance training in Shanghai. Her style is expansive and dramatic, taking ballet to a realm both classically pure, but with a contemporary outlook that
18 BALLET WEST
From the Artistic Director
is very much her own. Fang pulls from her own extensive performing experiences dancing in some of the world’s leading ballets and with many of the world’s most renowned choreographers, but like all the choreographers on display in this program, her voice is uniquely her own. We are proud to be presenting the world premiere of Fang’s Somewhere in Time with a striking commissioned score by Deanna H. Choi.
Finally, it is an honor to host another company as our guest – the wonderful BalletMet from Columbus, Ohio, currently under the leadership of Edwaard Liang. My goal with bringing in guest companies is two-fold – to expose our local audiences to the wealth of exciting new works being presented around the country and world, and to create a true collaborative feeling with our Choreographic Festival so it can be a true celebration of our artform and joining of styles for us all to exchange ideas and learn from one another.
Liang, who was born in Taipei, Taiwan, raised in the U.S. and danced as a soloist with the New York City Ballet and The Netherlands Dance Theater, has choreographed extensively for major companies around the world. In 2019, I commissioned him to create Constant Light as part of our Choreographic Festival IV. Liang has been Artistic Director of Ballet Met since 2013. At the time I invited them to take part in this festival, he was the only Asian Director of an American ballet company (I am excited to say that Ma Cong, resident choreographer of the Richmond Ballet – another company we have hosted in the past – has recently been named Artistic Director there). Additionally, Liang has just been named the new, incoming Artistic Director of the Washington Ballet in Washington, D.C. for next season, so I am thrilled he was able to join us for this festival. BalletMet brings Edwaard Liang’s beautiful Seasons to the Max Richter re-composition of Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons. It is such a pleasure to be able to join forces on the stage, with this lovely company.
Immediately following the Choreographic Festival VI here in SLC, Ballet West has been invited to appear – for the second invitation this season – on the stage of The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington D.C. where we continue this celebration of Asian leadership in Classical Ballet as part of their own Festival – 10,000 Dreams. This festival came about as a collaborative brainchild of Phil Chan, Ballet West, and The Kennedy Center and will be a weeklong celebration of three different programs, including The Houston Ballet, The Washington Ballet, The Singapore Ballet and Ballet West, and others. Not only is this a wonderful way to recognize the important contribution of Asians and Asian Americans in Ballet, it is a thrilling way for Ballet West to complete or 60th Anniversary!
Thank you all for your continued patronage and support of Ballet West. We are grateful and hope you enjoy this unique collaborative performance.
Adam Sklute Artistic Director, Ballet West
Since 2007, Adam Sklute has expanded Ballet West’s outlook, repertoire, and visibility with exciting Company and world premieres, increased touring, heightened public exposure, and greater focus on the Ballet West Academy. He began his career with The Joffrey Ballet, rising through the ranks from dancer to Associate Director. His stewardship of Ballet West has been marked by both financial growth and elevated artistry, and was the subject of The CW Network’s docu-drama, Breaking Pointe, which aired for two seasons. From September 2016 to October 2017, Sklute took on the dual position of CEO and Artistic Director, overseeing both administrative and artistic operations of Ballet West. An internationally sought-after teacher and adjudicator, Sklute has received numerous awards, including Utah’s Enlightened 50 (2014), The Bronze Minuteman Award for Outstanding Service to Utah and The Nation (2015), and Utah Diversity Connection’s Business Award for outstanding commitment to diversity initiatives. Most recently, Sklute was included in Deseret Magazine’s 25 Changemakers of the West for his efforts to build greater equity and inclusion in classical ballet.
19 23–24 SEASON
From the Executive Director
Ballet West’s commitment to new work is no more evident than in the program you are about to see:
Choreographic Fest VI: Asian Voices. In this program, Artistic Director Adam Sklute continues to showcase emerging choreographers – this year with a particular focus on Asian choreographers. Commissioned works by Zhong-Jing Fang and Caili Quan will be featured on a program that also includes Phil Chan’s Amber Waves and Edwaard Liang’s Seasons.
While audience favorites such as Swan Lake and The Nutcracker play an important role in building our audience and generating critical revenue from admissions, Ballet West recognizes that it is equally important to expand the dance repertoire with new work, which is vital to keeping our art form fresh and relevant. We pride ourselves on providing young choreographers with a platform to hone their craft and take risks, alongside our exceptional artists. The intimate Rose Wagner Theatre offers the perfect venue to experience these creations, where every seat allows audiences to feel connected in ways larger theatres cannot possibly offer.
Choreographic Fest VI: Asian Voices is our final bow in Utah to a remarkably successful 60th Anniversary Season. Yet the season continues in the nation’s capitol when Ballet West returns to The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts for the second time in one season, performing these works as part of The Kennedy Center’s 10,000 Dreams festival, June 18-23. We are proud that Ballet West was invited to perform on the festival’s two programs, as well as the special gala evening. It will be a fitting conclusion to a season that featured amazing work on stage, record ticket sales, and strong community support in countless ways.
Looking ahead to Season 61, I am pleased to report demand for subscriptions continues to outpace industry trends. Our Utah audience is not only growing, it is growing younger, a promising development for our future. Your Ballet West is at the top of its game, and we are deeply grateful for the role you have played in supporting our beloved company, and the feedback we receive from you is heartwarming and genuinely appreciated. Without your consistent, generous support year after year, we would not have risen to become America’s ninth largest ballet company based on budget size. This achievement is all the more remarkable given the larger companies are in the national’s largest metropolitan areas, including New York, Boston, Seattle, Houston, and San Francisco.
If you have not yet done so, reserve your seats for next season and lock in your preferred location while some good options remain. In the meantime, I extend to you
20 BALLET WEST
From the Executive Director
my very best wishes for a relaxing, safe and enjoyable summer and I look forward to seeing you at Jekyll & Hyde in October!
Sincerely yours,
Michael Scolamiero Executive Director
Michael Scolamiero joined Ballet West after an extensive international search led by Michael Kaiser, President Emeritus of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Mr. Scolamiero previously served as Executive Director of Miami City Ballet for three years, during which time the organization achieved a significant reduction in debt, as well as robust growth in ticket revenue, contributions, and touring income. Prior to Miami City Ballet, Mr. Scolamiero was Pennsylvania Ballet’s Executive Director for 17 years, the longest tenure in the Company’s history and among the longest of any leader of a major ballet company. During his tenure, Mr. Scolamiero led the organization’s first capital campaign, which raised $11.9 million (against a $10 million goal) to build an endowment and fund repertoire expansion. At Ballet West, Mr. Scolamiero has played a key role in transforming the organization’s financial health. No longer using external financing to meet cash needs, Ballet West’s balance sheet is strong after realizing operating surpluses for three consecutive fiscal years. Mr. Scolamiero is currently working with the Board and management on a new strategic plan that will serve as a blueprint for Ballet West’s aspirations as the organization enters its 60th season and beyond.

Amber Waves was created to a musical improvisation on the iconic “America the Beautiful” by composer Huang Ruo. This duet is a riff on the contrast between the idealism and optimism of the American Dream, and the sometimes harsh realities that immigrants face when arriving to our shores. Yet, we still hope and strive for that ideal — as if we have a choice?

By 2002, Mr. Liang was invited by Jiri Kylian to become a member of the acclaimed Nederlands Dans Theater 1.
While dancing with NDT 1, Mr. Liang discovered his passion and love for choreography. Since establishing himself as a choreographer, his works have been performed by dance companies around the world and he has won numerous awards for his choreography including the 2006 National Choreographic Competition. DEANNA H. CHOI
Composer, Somewhere in Time
Deanna H. Choi is a composer and sound designer splitting her time between Toronto and London. Her work is driven by curiosity and imagination, and she draws from her past as a neuroscience researcher, a classically trained violinist, and a competitive figure skater. She has designed live stage productions and installations across North America and her scores for film and television can be heard on Netflix, AppleTV, and CBC. Recent highlights include the Rhys Darby sci-fi comedy, Relax I’m From the Future, the conservation documentary Last of the Right Whales, the climate change documentary Apocalypse Plan B narrated by Jane Fonda, the spy thriller series Gray starring Patricia Clarkson, and the Toronto production of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead starring Dominic Monaghan and Billy Boyd. She is nominated for a Canadian Academy Award, and is the recipient of the Pauline McGibbon, two Doras, and numerous other accolades. Her award-winning ‘yellow fever’ cabaret show co-created with Maddie Bautista, Love You Wrong Time, embarks on a national tour starting in 2024.
HUANG RUO
Composer, Amber Waves
Composer Huang Ruo, born in Hainan Island, China, has been lauded by The New York Times for having “a distinctive style.” His vibrant and inventive musical voice draws equal inspiration from Chinese ancient and folk music, Western avant-garde, experimental, noise, natural and processed sound, rock, and jazz to create a seamless, organic integration using a compositional technique he calls “Dimensionalism.” Huang Ruo’s diverse compositional works span from orchestra, chamber music, opera, theater, and dance, and has been premiered and performed by the New York Philharmonic, Philadelphia Orchestra, Boston Symphony Orchestra, Cleveland Orchestra, San Francisco Symphony, BBC Symphony Orchestra, Netherlands Radio Philharmonic, National Polish Radio Orchestra, Santa Fe Opera, Washington National Opera, and more. He earned a Bachelor of Music degree from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, and Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees in composition from the Juilliard School. Huang Ruo is a composition faculty at the Mannes School of Music in NY, and is the artistic director and conductor of Ensemble FIRE.

MAX RICHTER
Composer, Seasons
Max Richter stands as one of the most prodigious figures on the contemporary music scene, with ground-breaking work as a composer, pianist, producer, and collaborator. From synthesizers and computers to a full symphony orchestra, Richter’s innovative work encompasses solo albums, ballets, concert hall performances, film, and television series, video art installations, and theatre works. He is classically trained, studying at Edinburgh University, the Royal Academy of Music, London, and completing his studies with composer Luciano Berio in Florence. In 2012, Richter “Recomposed” the infamous Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, winning him the prestigious ECHO Classic Award, and an established place in the classical charts. In recent years Richter’s music has become a mainstay for many of the world’s leading ballet companies. His latest recorded project, The New Four Seasons, was released in 2022 marking ten years of his Vivaldi Recomposed project, re-recording the piece with period instruments.
