F ROM T H E A RT I S T IC DI R E CTOR Welcome to “Almost Tango”, a triple bill of three remarkably innovative works. Every ballet in the program is at once an exploration into untried territory but also a self-conscious commentary on the world that it explores. The program begins with George Balanchine’s charming and fiendishly difficult 1957 ballet - Square Dance. Balanchine loved America, and he loved Baroque music, and when he listened to these early 18th Century compositions by Antonio Vivaldi and Arcangelo Corelli he heard rhythms and sounds that reminded him of American Square Dance tunes. Balanchine ingeniously conceived of a ballet that incorporated a square dance caller to call the steps to this European music. This is a ballet at once classical and demanding in its technical requirements, and down-home American in its energy and fun-loving joy. I have a special relationship to this wonderful ballet as I have performed the role of the square dance caller numerous times in the past with The Joffrey Ballet. So I am excited to be making my Ballet West performing premiere, leading the dancers through this “killer” work. Our resident choreographer Nicolo Fonte’s Almost Tango explores the development of tango from its roots in the slums of Argentina to its chic and sexy current incarnation. Nicolo’s ballet is completely abstract in its structure and form but in subtle ways he brings to life the development of this powerful art-form. The dance originated in the late 1800’s as a means of storytelling and bonding between European immigrants to Latin America. At that time male immigrant workers far outnumbered the women and in this ballet, like in the tango, men often had to dance with each other. As the tango progressed to its more formalized incarnation in the 1910’s and 20’s, it was often considered shocking for its overt nature but finally by the 1930’s it evolved into the sophisticated, provocative and sensual dance it is today. In 1987, American choreographer William Forsythe astounded the world with his chic and electric In the Middle, Somewhat Elevated. With its almost techno style score by Thom Willams, it turned our concept of ballet on its head. The dancers present the ballet in a cool, detached manner that belies the work’s incredible technical demands. To the driving music they walk on and off the stage, glancing at one another and beginning and finishing their dancing with an almost arch sense of disinterest. There is very much a 1980’s club atmosphere throughout but “Middle” is, in truth, a highly refined classical theme and variations. Here we have another brilliant melding of classical ballet and popular culture. We hope you enjoy our thrilling “Almost Tango” program. The entire show is an inspiring challenge to your Ballet West and I am grateful for you joining us to experience it.

We’ve been a part of something extraordinary this year. I’ve been involved in arts organizations for over three decades and I’ve never witnessed a company produce the complex artistry and experience the tremendous growth Ballet West has appreciated this year. Our profile has not only expanded locally, but has been elevated nationally by our recent tour to The Joyce Theater in New York City, where we received great coverage in The New York Times and other publications. Later this spring we’ll travel to Texas and Victoria to continue presenting the very best of the Beehive to the rest of the world. The artistry of Ballet West has been nothing short of phenomenal this season. At Adam Sklute’s direction, the season has been successful, not only at the box office, but has exalted the art form and reiterated Ballet West among the ranks of the very finest ballet companies in America. The season’s progression has brought us to Almost Tango, a triple bill that we’ve been anxiously awaiting all season. We’re excited to see the precision in Square Dance (along with Adam in the role of caller)! The severity and innovation involved with In the Middle will be ethereal. And finally, resident choreographer, Nicolo Fonte will surely delight with his physical and sensual, Almost Tango. These pieces are markedly different than our previous productions this season and demonstrate the diversity and ability of our fine Company. For those who love the company, (and for those who love to have fun) I encourage you to purchase a ticket to Spring Celebration: A Rooftop Party to Benefit Ballet West. It’s a not-to-be-missed party in our new home where you can dine, dance, and party on the roof of our new home, overlooking the city lights. Join me, June 6th for this inaugural event that will leave you wishing every day you could be at the ballet! Sincerely,

Scott Altman Executive Director

Antonio Vivaldi (c. 1675-1741), perhaps the greatest of Venetian composers, was an extraordinarily prolific virtuoso whose reputation was strangely obscured for two centuries. He kept himself somewhat apart from the Roman classical school lately founded by Arcangelo Corelli (c. 1653-1713) a master violinist and composer and a friend of Handel and Scarlatti. While not formal partners, Vivaldi and Corelli laid the foundations for the future potentialities of the violin. Their rhythmic mastery provides perfect metric for the classic dance. In their music George Balanchine heard rhythms and sounds that closely resembled American Contra dancing and so for three of the movements he inserted a caller in the old American tradition who would call out and often improvise doggerel which ostensibly governed the form of the dances. The ballet disappeared for many years after its ballerina the American Virtuoso Patricia Wilde stopped dancing, but in 1975 Balanchine revived the work but chose to omit the caller in this incarnation. Ballet West remains one of only a very few companies in the world to present this joyous masterpiece in its original form. FRI 4/10 7:30PM — WED 4/15 7:30PM — FRI 4/17 7:30PM — SAT 4/18 7:30PM

He developed BW’s wildly successful annual Family Series and Innovations programs . A native of Berkeley, California, Sklute began dancing at the age of 16. His early training was at the Oakland Ballet and San Francisco Ballet schools. After only two years of formal study he joined The Joffrey II Dancers (The Joffrey’s apprentice company). Two years later he was asked to join The Joffrey Ballet. Sklute was one of the last two artists personally chosen by Robert Joffrey. He danced with The Joffrey from 1985 to 2000 and then rose through the ranks to Associate Director in 2005. Sklute became Artistic Director of BW in 2007. CHOREOGRAPHERS Nicolo Fonte RESIDENT CHOREOGRAPHER

Choreographer Nicolo Fonte has created over 40 new works for dance companies spanning the globe, garnering praise and generating excitement for his daring and theatrical approach to dance. The Australian Ballet, Royal Danish Ballet and The Dutch National Ballet, among many others, all have works of his in their repertoire. Whether made to Ravel’s brash Bolero or the quiet intricacy of a Bach violin piece, Fonte ballets have common ground: “The choreography is inventive, creating expressive original shapes built on an undercurrent of implicit human relationships” (Foyer/ Dance Europe). “What impresses the most is that his choreography is obviously the result of a personal reflexion - distinctly and unmistakably Fonte, proof of a rare quality” (Michel Odin / Danse). In addition to dancing his overwhelmingly successful “Bolero" and the enigmatic "Immeasurable Cadences Within", since becoming Resident Choreographer for Ballet West in 2012, Nicolo has created the very powerful and exciting "The Rite of Spring" and the jarringly beautiful “Presto", both to audience and critical acclaim.

George Balanchine CHOREOGRAPHER

George Balanchine is regarded as one of the foremost contemporary choreographers in the world of ballet. He came to America in 1933 and established the School of American Ballet in 1934. In 1948, Balanchine established the New York City Ballet and presented its first program consisting of Concerto Barocco, Orpheus and Symphony in C. Balanchine served as ballet master for the New York City Ballet from 1948 until his death in 1983, choreographing the majority of the productions the company has introduced since its inception. An authoritative catalogue of his works lists 425 works created by Balanchine in his lifetime. Balanchine’s style has been described as neoclassic. A gifted musician himself, his response to the Romantic Classicism was to de-emphasize the plot in his ballets, preferring to let “dance and music be the star of the show.” Nevertheless, tantalizing hints of a story color his works in such ballets as Apollo, Harlequinade, Liebesliede Waltzer and La Sonnambula. The New York City Ballet and School of American Ballet remain dedicated to the preservation of Balanchine’s ideals.

C H O R E O G R A P H E R A N D S TAG I N G William Forsythe CHOREOGRAPHY

William Forsythe is recognized as one of the world’s foremost choreographers. His work is acknowledged for reorienting the practice of ballet from its identification with classical repertoire to a dynamic 21st century art form. Forsythe’s deep interest in the fundamental principles of organization has led him to produce a wide range of projects including Installations, Films, and Web based knowledge creation.

Jodie Gates, STAGING Jodie Gates is Director and Vice Dean of the Glorya Kaufman School of Dance at the University of Southern California. Under her direction, the dance school hosts a revolutionary new dance program, opening in Fall 2015. Her professional performing career includes; former principal ballerina with the Joffrey Ballet, Frankfurt Ballet, Pennsylvania Ballet and international guest artist touring and performing throughout the world. As an internationally recognized choreographer she has created over 50 original dance works. She has recently created works for Ballet West, Cincinnati Ballet, Staatsballett Berlin in Germany, Colorado Ballet, Complexions Contemporary Ballet, Kansas City Ballet, Washington Ballet, Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet among others. She is also responsible for teaching, staging and producing William Forsythe’s ballets. Her honors include recognition from the American Association of University Women for her leadership, dedication and contribution to the arts. She has been acknowledged by American Ballet Theater for her choreographic excellence named the Altria/ABT Fellow, Artist of the Year from the city of Laguna Beach, and is a recipient of the esteemed Jerome Robbins ‘New Essential Works’ program. Jodie is also the founding director of the award winning Laguna Dance Festival in Southern California.

Victoria Simon, STAGING Victoria Simon was one of the first dancers selected by George Balanchine to re-stage his ballets. Now, as Ballet Mistress for the George Balanchine Trust, she has staged over 25 of the master’s ballets for more than 80 companies on every continent in the world. Her love for the ballets and respect for the choreography are evident in her stagings. With her eye for detail and her emphasis on musicality, she is one of the most sought after and respected re-creators of George Balanchine’s masterpieces. Simon began her study of ballet in New York City at the School of American Ballet prior to becoming an apprentice with the New York City Ballet at age 17. A few months later, she was invited to join the company, where she went on to become a Soloist before taking on the challenging role as Balanchine’s representative around the world.

He began his career as Staff Conductor for the Sadler’s Wells Opera Company (now the English National Opera). In 1972, he became Music Director for the London Festival Ballet, a position he held for eight years. During this time, he made major ballet recordings for E.M.I. In 1980, he became the Music Director for the Scottish Ballet and later for the Joffrey Ballet. His freelance conducting with Ballet West led to a permanent position with the Company as Music Director and Principal Conductor in 1988, a role he held until 2012, when he transitioned to Ballet West’s Music Director Emeritus.
