From the Artistic Director Welcome to Beauty and the Beast. A number of years ago I created the Ballet West Family Classics as a way for children and their families to enjoy our art form of ballet and learn how to appreciate its unique combination of art, music, movement, and storytelling. It was also designed to create a performance platform for our world-class second company and students. In just over one hour, your entire family will be entertained by the dancers of Ballet West II and the Ballet West Academy accompanied by a narration that tells the tale while the dancers dance the roles. Our production of Beauty & the Beast, which we premiered in the Spring of 2016, is based on the original story by Jeanne-Marie LePrince de Beaumont and has a score arrangement of various pieces by composers Alexander Glazunov and Nikolai Tcherepin. The magical sets and costumes have many influences including Jean Cocteau’s brilliant 1946 film La Belle et la Bette. Producing the Family Classics Series is a wonderful collaboration and all the aspects of this production have been arranged and choreographed by Ballet West’s Principal Ballet Master Pamela Robinson Harris, and Associate Director of Ballet West II, Peggy Dolkas. Together they chose the selections of music from the composers I recommended and they wrote the libretto. They are the team that brought our previous Family Classics productions of The Little Mermaid and Aladdin to life, and I always marvel at their limitless creativity and the joy, pathos, and humor they are able to bring to their storytelling and dance. With the costumes designed by our Director of Costume Production, David Heuvel, and sets by John Wayne Cook, this Beauty and the Beast has a unique dreamlike quality mixed with charm and humor brought to life by a marvelous cast of Ballet West Academy students, under the supervision of Student Ballet Master Heather Thackeray, and Ballet West II, our “Farm Team,” under the direction of Calvin Kitten. The collaboration continues with the voiceovers. Listen for cameo voice appearances by Cati Snarr, Principal of the Peggy Bergmann Ballet West Academy Campus at Park City; Jane Wood, Ballet West Ballet Master; Gils Maidon, former Ballet West Principal Artist; Jeanne Potucek, longtime Ballet West donor and former board member; Ballet West donor Christopher Renstrom; Heather Thackeray as “Beauty;” and, with some digital alterations, the voice of the “Beast” is played by me, Adam Sklute. So you can see, this production truly is a family affair.

This Beauty and the Beast is a perfect ballet for children and adults from all walks of life. And in these fast paced times, this program is a wonderful opportunity for you and your family to take time and slow down for a short while and experience theater, art, music, and togetherness. Thank you for joining us. We hope you enjoy.
Adam Sklute Since 2007, Adam Sklute has expanded Ballet West’s outlook, repertoire, and visibility with exciting Company and world premieres, increased touring, heightened public exposure, and greater focus on the Ballet West Academy. He began his career with The Joffrey Ballet, rising through the ranks from dancer to Associate Director. His stewardship of Ballet West has been marked by both financial growth and elevated artistry, and was the subject of The CW Network’s docu-drama, Breaking Pointe, which aired for two seasons. From September 2016 to October 2017, Sklute took on the dual position of CEO and Artistic Director overseeing both administrative and artistic operations of Ballet West. An internationally sought after teacher and adjudicator, Sklute has received numerous awards, including Utah’s Enlightened 50 (2014), The Bronze Minuteman Award for Outstanding Service to Utah and The Nation (2015), and most recently Utah Diversity Connection’s Business Award for outstanding commitment to diversity initiatives.

From the Executive Director I am thrilled you have joined us for Beauty and the Beast, Ballet West’s third production in our Family Classics Series. This is an exciting and ambitious production where Ballet West II and students of the Frederick Quinney Lawson Ballet West Academy have the opportunity to perform on the grand Capitol Theatre stage. Family Classics, including Beauty and the Beast, are a concise one hour and fifteen minutes and feature guided narration so even the youngest audience members can fully understand the drama and beauty on stage. The stars of this show are the dancers of Ballet West II, a troupe that has recently grown into a 15-member touring ensemble. These dancers, the best of Utah and beyond, are young and talented individuals from Brazil, Canada, Switzerland, and a dozen points in between—each of them choosing Salt Lake City as their professional home. For Ballet West II, dance is no longer a hobby, but a career. They’re in the studios from 10:00 AM to almost 7:00 PM, five days a week. When they are not rehearsing for Beauty and the Beast, or performing with the main company, they are Ballet West ambassadors, performing in community centers, schools, and churches. As they hone their talent, they spread the joy of dance to those who may not have the means or ability to see ballet in a traditional theater. The Family Classics Series supports the development of new, young audiences, while nurturing the careers of tomorrow’s professionals. On both sides of the curtain, this is the future of dance. With new and dazzling costumes and sets, Beauty and the Beast advances the highest production values that guide all of the work created for our stage. Sit back and enjoy! Sincerely,
Michael Scolamiero
Michael Scolamiero joined Ballet West in 2017 after an extensive international search led by Michael Kaiser, President Emeritus of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Mr. Scolamiero previously served as Executive Director of Miami City Ballet for three years, during which time the organization achieved a significant reduction in debt, as well as robust growth in ticket revenue, contributions, and touring income. Prior to Miami City Ballet, Mr. Scolamiero was Pennsylvania Ballet’s Executive Director for 17 years, the longest tenure in the Company’s history and among the longest of any leader of a major ballet company. During his tenure, Mr. Scolamiero led the organization’s first capital campaign that raised $11.9 million (against a $10 million goal) to build an endowment and fund repertoire expansion. At Ballet West, Mr. Scolamiero is set to implement a newly completed strategic plan and excited to guide a growing and robust Company.
