About Ballet West From Balanchine to Bournonville, and Petipa to Tharp, Ballet West boasts a rich and varied repertoire, elegant and versatile artists, and an American style and legacy that is as dynamic, expansive, and unexpected as the Rocky Mountain region it represents. Ballet West has toured the world several times over, presenting the very best in American classical ballet.
willam christensen, founder of ballet west
Ballet West was established in Salt Lake City in 1963. Willam F. Christensen was the company’s first artistic director, co-founding the company together with Utah’s “First Lady of the Arts,” Glenn Walker Wallace. In 1951, Christensen had established the first ballet department in an American university at The University of Utah, and with the tireless assistance of Mrs. Enid Cosgriff, this program grew into the Utah Civic Ballet, Ballet West’s first incarnation. But this was not the first ballet company Willam Christensen founded. Along with his brothers, Lew and Harold, Christensen made history by establishing the oldest ballet company in the western United States, the San Francisco Ballet. There, he went on to create the first full-length American productions of Coppélia, Swan Lake, and his evergreen production of The Nutcracker, which remains in Ballet West’s repertoire to this day. With 37 company members, 16 second company members, and a thriving academy that trains dancers of all ages, many of whom have gone on to professional careers with Ballet West and companies around the world, Ballet West ranks among the top professional ballet companies in America. Since its inception, the Company has had five artistic directors—its founder Willam Christensen, Bruce Marks, John Hart, Jonas Kage, and currently Adam Sklute, each of whom has helped to build Ballet West’s unique and expansive profile.
GLENN WALKER WALLACE, CO-FOUNDER OF BALLET WEST
For more than 50 years, Willam Christensen and Ballet West have developed and influenced innumerable great artists in the ballet world. Some notable figures include Bart Cook, Finis Jhung, Jay Jolley, Victoria Morgan, Tomm Ruud, Michael Smuin, Richard Tanner, and Kent Stowell. With an eclectic and ever expanding outlook, Ballet West is truly an American pioneer in the world of dance.

From the Artistic Director Welcome to Ballet West’s Fifth Choreographic Festival. This festival is designed to present and nurture the creation of new works for the ballet stage, providing you with a robust flavor of all the different types and styles of choreography that are being developed across the globe. It is also an opportunity for companies from around the world to come together and share ideas, styles, and our art form—to learn from each other and to celebrate our unique and extended community of ballet and dance. In 2007, when I started at Ballet West, I realized it was vital to create a platform for the development of new ballets, so we introduced our annual Innovations Series. Given the success of Innovations, I expanded the concept to invite guest companies to present their new and cutting-edge choreography alongside Ballet West, building a festival that could be for dance what the Sundance Film Festival is for film. To date we have hosted nine US companies and one International company—The Scottish Ballet. Two years ago, we unfortunately had to cancel our planned festival due to the pandemic, and for the same reason last year we brought the festival back to its more “in-house” roots, presenting only company choreographers. So it is with great excitement that this year we welcome the world-renowned Dance Theater of Harlem to join us as our first guests in three years. It is an honor for Ballet West to be dancing alongside this mesmerizing company as we join forces to present this program of four unique works—two presented by BW and two by DTH! I have loved the Dance Theater of Harlem since I first saw the company in the early 1980s. It is a company of passion, versatility, and dynamics. Founded in the late 1960s by former New York City Ballet star Arthur Mitchell, it has since 2013 been run by the brilliant Virginia Johnson, former DTH prima ballerina and founder (also former Editor-in-Chief) of Pointe Magazine. Virginia has not only continued Mr. Mitchell’s legacy, but she has brought the company into the 21st century with vibrant new works by a diverse range of choreographers. For Ballet West’s Choreographic Festival this year, DTH offers Higher Ground by their resident choreographer, Robert Garland, which just premiered in January 2022. 14
From the Artistic Director Using the music of Stevie Wonder, generously agreed to by the iconic musical genius himself, choreographer Garland finds a wonderful flow of inner meaning in some of Stevie Wonder’s lesser known songs. They are also bringing Balamouk by internationally celebrated choreographer Annabelle Lopez Ochoa. In Balamouk, Lopez Ochoa weaves a fascinating tapestry of dynamics that superbly shows off the DTH dancers. For this Festival, the two choreographers I have chosen to create new works on Ballet West are both rising stars. Brazilian choreographer Juliano Nunes has now set works across the globe to great acclaim. His new creation for BW—Orange—is a meditative exploration on the joy of being alive. French choreographer Sophie LaPLane’s new Galantheae derives its title from a genus of flower related to the Amaryllis – delicate but strong, in Sophie’s words, the group of these flowers are “inspiringly known as a tribe”. Utah audiences may remember her work Sibilo which the Scottish Ballet presented as our guest company for the 2019 Choreographic Festival. Both Juliano and Sophie have created large-cast ballets at my request to stay in keeping with the spirit of our entire season—celebrating togetherness and community. Indeed, these four works, together with Dance Theater of Harlem and Ballet West, side by side on our stage, presenting four very different choreographic visions of dance, is inspiring and fills me with hope for the future of our art form and the world. We are grateful as always for your patronage of this program and our entire 21/22 Season, which has truly been “Back to Live”! We look forward to seeing you next season, a thrilling lineup including three grand-scale, full-length story-ballets, four historic BW/Utah premieres, and much, much more. Thank you and enjoy,
Adam Sklute Artistic Director Ballet West
Since 2007, Adam Sklute has expanded Ballet West’s outlook, repertoire, and visibility with exciting Company and world premieres, increased touring, heightened public exposure, and greater focus on the Ballet West Academy. He began his career with The Joffrey Ballet, rising through the ranks from dancer to Associate Director. His stewardship of Ballet West has been marked by both financial growth and elevated artistry, and was the subject of The CW Network’s docu-drama, Breaking Pointe, which aired for two seasons. From September 2016 to October 2017, Sklute took on the dual position of CEO and Artistic Director overseeing both administrative and artistic operations of Ballet West. An internationally sought after teacher and adjudicator, Sklute has received numerous awards, including Utah’s Enlightened 50 (2014), The Bronze Minuteman Award for Outstanding Service to Utah and The Nation (2015), and Utah Diversity Connection’s Business Award for outstanding commitment to diversity initiatives. Most recently, Sklute was included in Deseret Magazine’s 25 Changemakers of the West for his efforts to build greater equity and inclusion in classical ballet.
CHOREOGRAPHIC FESTIVAL V 21-22 SEASON
15
From the Executive Director I am pleased to welcome all of you to the concluding program of our 58th season, Choreographic Fest V, an innovative showcase for new work, which is an important part of our mission here at Ballet West. Commissions keep our art form fresh and relevant, giving choreographers an opportunity to express themselves with their own unique vocabulary of movement on our exceptional company of dancers. We are also proud to present Dance Theatre of Harlem, an extraordinary company founded in 1969 by Arthur Mitchell and Karel Shook and now led by former DTH dancer Virginia Johnson. In its first Salt Lake City appearance in eight years, DTH’s two powerful works on this program will complement and contrast nicely with the works performed by Ballet West and choreographed by Sophie Laplane and Juliano Nunes. The 2021-2022 season has been remarkable in a number of ways. Ballet West returned to live with a season carefully planned by Adam Sklute designed specifically to celebrate our return to experiencing great art in our beloved Janet Quinney Lawson Capitol Theatre while showcasing the versatility and prowess of Ballet West’s incredible dancers. Audiences turned out in record numbers, with many performances throughout the season sold out and ticket revenue reaching a 10-year high. Subscriptions increased as well with more than 1,000 new subscribers; contributions from individuals and corporations also exceeded expectations. Finally, our Second Annual Spring Soirée raised a record $200,000 for the Frederick Quinney Lawson Ballet West Academy scholarship fund and Ballet West.
16
From the Executive Director Although Ballet West’s home is located in a region with far fewer people than major metropolitan centers on the East and West Coasts, we have a remarkably loyal and vibrant arts-going public that has made Ballet West one of the leading ballet companies in the United States. With fewer resources, we have created exceptional art and built one of the nation’s most highly regarded schools at the Frederick Quinney Lawson Ballet West Academy. The rich tradition of support for the arts for which Utah is known has never been more visible than today. Our community has embraced all that we offer with a generosity of spirit that is the envy of many other cities. All of us at Ballet West are humbled by the support we receive day after day, yet we do not take any of it for granted. Our future is bright thanks to you. We want to make you proud on stage and off for many years to come and showcase for the nation the depth and beauty of this Utah-based company known as Ballet West. With deep appreciation,,
Michael Scolamiero Executive Director
Michael Scolamiero joined Ballet West in 2017 after an extensive international search led by Michael Kaiser, President Emeritus of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Mr. Scolamiero previously served as Executive Director of Miami City Ballet for three years, during which time the organization achieved a significant reduction in debt, as well as robust growth in ticket revenue, contributions, and touring income. Prior to Miami City Ballet, Mr. Scolamiero was Pennsylvania Ballet’s Executive Director for 17 years, the longest tenure in the Company’s history and among the longest of any leader of a major ballet company. During his tenure, Mr. Scolamiero led the organization’s first capital campaign that raised $11.9 million (against a $10 million goal) to build an endowment and fund repertoire expansion. At Ballet West, Mr. Scolamiero is set to implement a newly completed strategic plan and excited to guide a growing and robust Company.

GALANTHEAE
WORLD PREMIERE
Choreography: Sophie Laplane Music: Frederic Chopin / Ernst Reijseger Music arrangement: Lucy Allan Costume Design: Jason Hadley Lighting Design: Joseph R. Walls World Premiere: May 11, 2022, Rose Wagner Performing Arts Center, Salt Lake City, Utah Galantheae is an abstract piece that draws on the imagery of the Galanthus flower also know as the snowdrop to honour the strength and resilience of dancers. These small, seemingly delicate, elegant flowers have sharp, steely tips enabling them to burrow through the frozen earth to blossom, the first flowers to signal the end of harsh winter. This is a determined, resolute plant, as described in the Ted Hughes poem which was an inspiration for this work. The snowdrop embodies the duality of strength/elegance which is at the heart of dance. Visually, the white tutus of the piece evoke the bell of the snowdrops; the music of Chopin and Reijseger contrast to echo the same duality. Finally, in the classification of plants, the genre Galantheae is inspiringly known as a “tribe.” -Sophie Laplane Nocturne in C Sharp Minor, by Frédéric Chopin. Performed by Ólafur Arnalds, Alice Sara Ott; Tell Me Everything, by Ernst Reijseger. Performed by Ernst Reijseger; Crystal Palace XXVI and XXVIII, by Ernst Reijseger. Performed by Ernst Reijseger; 8x3 4 T, by Ernst Reijseger. Performed by Ernst Reijseger, Larissa Groeneveld, and Frank Van de Laar; Les Sylphides: 1. Prelude in A major, by Frédéric Chopin. Profiles DANCE THEATRE OF HARLEM Founders: Arthur Mitchell, Karel Shook Artistic Director: Virginia Johnson Executive Director: Anna Glass Resident Choreographer: Robert Garland Interim General Manager: Melinda Bloom About the Company Dance Theatre of Harlem is a leading dance institution of unparalleled global acclaim, encompassing a professional touring company, a leading studio school, and a national and international education and community outreach program. Each component of Dance Theatre of Harlem carries a solid commitment towards enriching the lives of young people and adults around the world through the arts. Founded in 1969 by Arthur Mitchell and Karel Shook, Dance Theatre of Harlem is considered “one of ballet’s most exciting undertakings” (The New York Times). Shortly after the assassination of The Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Mitchell was inspired to start a school that would offer children — especially those in Harlem, the community in which he was born — the opportunity to learn about dance and the allied arts. Now in its sixth decade, Dance Theatre of Harlem has grown into a multi-cultural dance institution with an extraordinary legacy of providing opportunities for creative expression and artistic excellence that continues to set standards in the performing arts. Dance Theatre of Harlem has achieved unprecedented success, bringing innovative and bold new forms of artistic expression to audiences in New York City, across the country and around the world. Now a singular presence in the ballet world, the Dance Theatre of Harlem Company tours nationally and internationally, presenting a powerful vision for ballet in the 21st century. The 18-member, multi-ethnic company performs a forward-thinking repertoire that includes treasured classics, neoclassical works by George Balanchine and resident choreographer Robert Garland, as well as innovative contemporary works that use the language of ballet to celebrate Arthur Mitchell’s belief that belongs to everyone. Through performances, community engagement and arts education, the Company carries forward Dance Theatre of Harlem’s message of empowerment through the arts for all.

Her most recent work was performed at the Paris Opéra Garnier, as part of the exciting new production of Les Noces de Figaro directed by Netia Jones. Sophie’s interest in dance on film developed through Scottish Ballet's Digital Season, creating A Work in a Week: Idle Eyes which was live-streamed throughout the process. During the pandemic lockdowns Sophie produced several pieces for film: the aptly named Indoors was nominated for the UK National Dance Awards, best short dance film. She created a film adaption of Sibilo in 2020 for the Argentinian company Ballet Contemporaneo del Teatro San Martin which was shown at Julio Bocca’s charity gala Gran Gala por los Ninos. Her most recent film Dive, a collaboration with co-creator, James Bonas and film director Oscar Sansom explores the life and work of the artist Yves Klein. This “genuinely cinematic, absolutely invigorating feast for the senses.” (The National) was featured as part of the Biennale di Venezia official selection 2021.
