From the Artistic Director Welcome to Ballet West’s annual Choreographic Festival. This festival is designed to present and nurture the creation of new works for the ballet stage, providing you with a robust flavor of all the different types of and styles of choreography that are being developed around the world. When I arrived at Ballet West 12 years ago, I knew that the organization needed an ongoing outlet for new works. From this, our Innovations series was born. Its purpose was to give our company dancers an opportunity to create, and to present renowned and emerging, national and international choreographers. Given the success of Innovations, I wanted to expand the concept and invite guest companies to present their new and cutting-edge choreography alongside Ballet West and hopefully build a springtime festival, here in Utah, that could be for dance what the Sundance Film Festival is for film. The result—the Choreographic Festival. To date, we have had eight different companies from the United States, and this year we are thrilled to welcome our first international company – Scottish Ballet. Based out of Glasgow, Scottish Ballet is Scotland’s national dance company, celebrating 50 years this year. They bring the U.S. premiere of Sibilo by their resident choreographer, and company dancer, Sophie Laplane. We are honored to be part of their 50th Anniversary Celebration. Developing company dancers as choreographers has always been a priority for me, and since 2008, we have produced over thirty new works by eleven different Ballet West dancers. For our 2019 festival, we are presenting the Salt Lake City premiere of three works that actually premiered on tour. Ballet West Principal, Emily Adams’ But a Dream and First Soloist, Katlyn Addison’s Hidden Voices were first performed last season in St. George, Utah and Demi-Soloist, Trevor Naumann’s disquiet appeared in an earlier incarnation, Grief and Integration, in 2017 in Park City. It is vital to give works multiple presentations allowing a choreographer to develop, modify, and hone their creations. I am excited that all three of these company choreographers have the opportunity to do so. Finally, it is with great pleasure that we welcome worldrenowned choreographer Edwaard Liang. A former dancer of the New York City Ballet and the Netherlands Dance Theater, he is now the Artistic Director of Ballet Met in Columbus, Ohio and his work is sought after worldwide. This will be his first premiere for Ballet West and it is clear to me why he
10
is in such demand. Using his unique and elegant brand of movement and musicality, he has created a work that is in sync with our dancers, giving them a vehicle that both highlights and challenges their abilities. Additionally, this season we expand our programming to create a true citywide festival, that incorporates other media and locations. In the mezzanine, please enjoy “Art of Ballet” an art exhibit displaying the works of Nathan Florence, Karen Horne, and Beau Pearson that show the athleticism and beauty of dance from another medium. Opening the festival, a Utah premiere of Danseur, a film from Scott Gormley that explores gender inequality in ballet, and shines a light on bullying, homophobia, and other barriers for young men in the industry. A panel discussion following the screening, led by dance journalist, Kate Mattingly will explore this topic even further. Finally, overlapping the Choreographic Festival, Ballet West Academy is performing at the Marriott Center for Dance at The University of Utah May 9-11, and the Eccles Center in Park City May 11, where audiences will see the next generation of great dancers and choreographers. On a very personal note, one of the things I love most about Ballet West’s Choreographic Festival is the camaraderie and joy that comes out of sharing and learning from each other. This is what I have been told repeatedly by our guest companies and our Ballet West artists. Sharing classes and rehearsals, stories and ideas, stylistic differences and commonalities, and finding out how different and how similar we are, expands us as artists. I hope that seeing all these new creations from around the world will do the same for you, our beloved audience. As always, thank you for your on-going patronage and support.
Adam Sklute Artistic Director
Since 2007, Adam Sklute has expanded Ballet West’s outlook, repertoire, and visibility with exciting Company and world premieres, increased touring, heightened public exposure, and greater focus on the Ballet West Academy. He began his career with The Joffrey Ballet, rising through the ranks from dancer to Associate Director. His stewardship of Ballet West has been marked by both financial growth and elevated artistry, and was the subject of The CW Network’s docu-drama, Breaking Pointe, which aired for two seasons. From September 2016 to October 2017, Sklute took on the dual position of CEO and Artistic Director overseeing both administrative and artistic operations of Ballet West. An internationally sought after teacher and adjudicator, Sklute has received numerous awards, including Utah’s Enlightened 50 (2014), The Bronze Minuteman Award for Outstanding Service to Utah and The Nation (2015), and most recently Utah Diversity Connection’s Business Award for outstanding commitment to diversity initiatives.

From the Executive Director Dear Ballet West Family, What an incredible year! Starting with one of my favorite works, George Balanchine’s Jewels, the 55th season was a bounty of bold and arresting works that only a handful of companies could endeavor to produce. In between mounting monumental ballets like Swan Lake and Onegin, the company received accolades from the most prestigious stages in the nation, with tours to Washington D.C.’s Kennedy Center and New York’s Joyce Theater. However, our accomplishments off stage are just as impressive and heartwarming. For instance, during the month of March, dozens of children with special needs learned how to stretch, play, and dance with company dancers, all of whom donated their time to be a part of this very special Movement Mentor program. In November, small touring groups performed The Sleeping Beauty to some of the most rural schools in the state. “Some of these children will never have the opportunity to see ballet in their lives, this is truly magical for them,” declared one Tabiona elementary school teacher. Another program, Forward Steps is teaching ballet in correctional facilities. “For this one hour, I can dream,” said one participant. And, I cannot forget the Ballet West Academy—where just two weeks ago five students made their dreams come true and advanced to the finals of the famed ballet competition, Youth America Grand Prix. We make ballet, but sometimes we produce magic—many moments the public will not be able to witness. But, for those whose lives we touch, or even change, it is just as enchanting as what you are about to watch on stage. Ballet entertains, it brings joy. It nourishes, strengthens, and heals. Thank you for the important role you play in making Ballet West one of the nation’s most prominent highly regarded ballet companies. Sincerely,
Michael Scolamiero Executive Director Michael Scolamiero joined Ballet West in 2017 after an extensive international search led by Michael Kaiser, President Emeritus of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Mr. Scolamiero previously served as Executive Director of Miami City Ballet for three years, during which time the organization achieved a significant reduction in debt, as well as robust growth in ticket revenue, contributions, and touring income. Prior to Miami City Ballet, Mr. Scolamiero was Pennsylvania Ballet’s Executive Director for 17 years, the longest tenure in the Company’s history and among the longest of any leader of a major ballet company. During his tenure, Mr. Scolamiero led the organization’s first capital campaign that raised $11.9 million (against a $10 million goal) to build an endowment and fund repertoire expansion. At Ballet West, Mr. Scolamiero is set to implement a newly completed strategic plan and excited to guide a growing and robust Company.

Casting SIBILO
Choreography: Sophie Laplane Music: Alex Menzies Design: Scottish Ballet Lighting: George Thomson Lighting Recreation: Michael Mazzola Sibilo began as a silent duet based on the personalities of two dancers. By chance, I came across a piece of music by Fred Lowery called “Whistleitis” and it was an immediate match for the duet. This led me to think about whistling as something humans do in a variety of situations and I decided to construct a piece with the motif of whistling running through it. My starting point is often an observation of human behaviour, its quirks and attitudes, and what makes us human. Sibilo is a series of vignettes, with miniature portraits of personalities within the company, with all their individuality. The way clothes are used in the piece is about revealing what is behind the dancers’ everyday costumes. It’s another way of seeing the dancers, getting behind the façade, getting behind everyday routine. – Sophie Laplane

About Ballet West From Balanchine to Bournonville, and Petipa to Tharp, Ballet West boasts a rich and varied repertoire, elegant and versatile artists, and an American style and legacy that is as dynamic, expansive, and unexpected as the Rocky Mountain region it represents. Ballet West has toured the world several times over, presenting the very best in American classical ballet. Ballet West was established in Salt Lake City in 1963. Willam F. Christensen was the company’s first artistic director, co-founding the company together with Utah’s “First Lady of the Arts,” Glenn Walker Wallace. In 1951, Christensen had established the first ballet department in an American university at The University of Utah, and with the tireless assistance of Mrs. Enid Cosgriff, this program grew into the Utah Civic Ballet, Ballet West’s first incarnation. But this was not the first ballet company Willam Christensen founded. Along with his brothers, Lew and Harold, Christensen made history by establishing the oldest ballet company in the western United States, the San Francisco Ballet. There, he went on to create the first full-length American productions of Coppélia, Swan Lake, and his evergreen production of The Nutcracker, which remains in Ballet West’s repertoire to this day. With 42 company members, 14 second company members, and a thriving academy that trains dancers of all ages, many of whom have gone on to professional careers with Ballet West and companies around the world, Ballet West ranks among the top professional ballet companies in America. Since its inception, the Company has had five artistic directors – its founder Willam Christensen, Bruce Marks, John Hart, Jonas Kage, and currently Adam Sklute, each of whom has helped to build Ballet West’s unique and expansive profile. For more than 50 years, Willam Christensen and Ballet West have developed and influenced innumerable great artists in the ballet world. Some notable figures include Bart Cook, Finis Jhung, Jay Jolley, Victoria Morgan, Tomm Ruud, Michael Smuin, Richard Tanner, and Kent Stowell. With an eclectic and ever expanding outlook, Ballet West is truly an American pioneer in the world of dance.

In Remembrance: Peter Meldrum Peter Meldrum received awards and plaques that could line hallways during his life. He had the ear of presidents, built an empire at Myriad Genetics, and was named one of the most visionary scientists of our time. Through it all, Peter remained humble and earthbound, even though his hobbies—from climbing mountains to supporting dance—took him skyward.
1947-2018
As Chairman of the Ballet West Board of Directors, Peter led the search for a new Artistic Director in 2007, while also guiding the company during a financial tsunami. “Beginning with Mr. C, Ballet West has had an excellent reputation. Under Adam Sklute, it is recognized as one of the leading ballet companies in the country,” said Peter in 2016. “In fact, it is more recognized today than ever before… we have dancers on the cover of international magazines, articles in The New York Times, and we’re touring the country—and this season to Cuba!” After his tenure as Chairman of the Board, Peter and Cathie continued to actively promote and support the company through The Meldrum Foundation and helped launch the Innovations series, which developed into the Choreographic Festival. Peter was proud of his Scottish heritage, so it is a serendipitous coincidence that Adam invited the Scottish Ballet to the third annual Choreographic Festival, which is posthumously being staged in Peter’s honor. “I remain eternally grateful to Pete. He headed the search committee that hired me for Ballet West,” recalls Artistic Director Adam Sklute. “Later, he was a remarkable, committed, and hands-on Chairman of the Board and he mentored me on so many levels. He was a champion of my work, indeed he was a champion of all arts, theater, and music both locally and abroad. Our Choreographic Festival would not have come to fruition without his passion for new and innovative work. I can honestly say I would not be the Artistic Director I am today without Pete’s guidance. I will miss him tremendously.”

Sophie Laplane was born in Paris, France and trained at The Conservatoire National Supérieur de Paris and Paris Opera Ballet School before joining Scottish Ballet in 2004. While dancing with Scottish Ballet, Sophie was given the opportunity to showcase her first choreographic piece: Oxymore was commissioned by CEO & Artistic Director Christopher Hampson and performed at the Edinburgh Festival in 2013. Sophie’s unique creative vision and undoubted natural ability as a choreographer would attract three further commissions: Maze, Sibilo, and the 360-degree film A Perfect Place (in collaboration with BBC Arts) during the remainder of her time at Scottish Ballet. In June 2017, Sophie retired from dancing and became Scottish Ballet’s Artist in Residence – Choreographer. In addition to works created for Scottish Ballet, she has created a number of independent pieces, including works for the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, Project Y Scotland Persist!, and the National Youth Ballet UK where her piece Watusi was shown at Sadler’s Wells Theatre, London in September 2018. Her final piece for 2018 was Vis-à-Vis, a duet created for the New York Choreographic Institute after being selected for the Fall Session. Sophie has also taken part in the 2018 Women in Dance Leadership Conference in New York where she presented her duet The Duel. In March 2019 she premiered CLICK! for Ballet Black at The Barbican in London, and Sibilo will have its US premiere in Salt Lake City in May 2019. She is currently undertaking an MA in Choreography at Central School of Ballet, London.

Profiles Edwaard Liang
Choreographer, Constant Light
A former dancer with New York City Ballet and Nederlands Dans Theater, Edwaard Liang has built an international reputation as a choreographer. Over the last decade, he has created work for the Bolshoi Ballet, Houston Ballet, Joffrey Ballet, Kirov Ballet, New York City Ballet, Pacific Northwest Ballet, San Francisco Ballet, Shanghai Ballet, Singapore Dance Theatre, and Washington Ballet. In 2018, he created a new ballet with Roberto Bolle for the opening of the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting in Davos, Switzerland. Born in Taipei, Taiwan, and raised in Marin County, California, Mr. Liang began his dance training at age five with Marin Ballet. After studying at the School of American Ballet, he joined New York City Ballet in 1993. That same year, he was a medal winner at the Prix de Lausanne International Ballet Competition and won the Mae L. Wien Award. By 1998, he was promoted to Soloist. In 2001, Mr. Liang joined the Tony Award® winning Broadway cast of Fosse. His performance in Fosse was later televised nationally on the PBS Great Performances series “Dance in America: From Broadway: Fosse,” which was subsequently released on DVD. By 2002, Mr. Liang was invited by Jiří Kylián to become a member of the acclaimed Nederlands Dans Theater 1. While dancing with NDT 1, Mr. Liang discovered his passion and love for choreography. Since establishing himself as a choreographer, his works have been performed by dance companies around the world and he has won numerous awards for his choreography including the 2006 National Choreographic Competition. In 2013, Mr. Liang was named Artistic Director at BalletMet where he continues to choreograph new works for companies both domestically and abroad. In 2017, he received an Emmy award for his short dance film, “Vaulted.”

Preparing for
the Second Act
The Artist Resource Fund supports continuing education for dancers to prepare for careers after dancing. Both dancers and Ballet West pay into the fund, but dancers oversee how the funds are governed and used.
The fund is helping Artist Lucas Horns receive his degree in Urban Ecology at the University of Utah.
Artist Jordan Richardson went to a Washington D.C. baking school and credits the fund with helping her begin a ‘sweet’ business as “The Ballerina Baker.”
Principal Arolyn Williams’ passion for the Gyrotonic Method took her to Boulder, Colorado to receive training, which she uses to help others exercise without joint pain.
Help dancers prepare for the future. Donate online at balletwest.org/artistresourcefund or leave a completed donation form, cash, or check in the collection box in the lobby. BACKGROUND PHOTO BY KATE TAYLOR, QUINCE AND MULBERRY STUDIOS
