About Ballet West From Balanchine to Bournonville, Petipa to Tharp, Ballet West boasts a rich and varied repertoire, elegant and versatile artists, and an American style and legacy that is as dynamic, expansive, and as unexpected as the Rocky Mountain region it represents. From its humble beginnings in 1963 as the only professional ballet company between Chicago and the West Coast, Ballet West has grown into one of America’s leading ballet companies. For 60 years, the Salt Lake City-based Company has entertained and excited audiences in Utah and worldwide by presenting the great classical story ballets, including America’s first and longest-running version of The Nutcracker, revivals of rarelyseen historical masterpieces, works by some of the world’s most renowned artists, and new cutting-edge creations by emerging choreographers. The Company also regularly tours both nationally and internationally.
willam christensen, founder of ballet west
Ballet West was established in Salt Lake City by co-founders Willam F. Christensen, often called the “Godfather of American ballet,” and Utah’s “First Lady of the Arts,” Glenn Walker Wallace. In 1951, Christensen established the first ballet department in an American university at The University of Utah. Over time, this program grew into the Utah Civic Ballet, Ballet West’s first incarnation. Prior to that, along with his brothers, Lew and Harold, Christensen made history by establishing the oldest full-ballet company in the western United States, the San Francisco Ballet. Since its inception, Ballet West has had five artistic directors, who have each helped build the Company’s unique and expansive profile – its founder, Willam Christensen, Bruce Marks, John Hart CBE, Jonas Kåge, and for the past 16 years, Adam Sklute, who has overseen the artistic product for the longest sustained growth of the Company since its founding. Ballet West continues to grow and evolve with 38 company members, 14 second company members, a thriving Academy, and one of the world’s largest ballet-based Education and Outreach programs, reaching over 100,000 children and adults throughout Utah and the Intermountain Region every year. The Frederick Q. Lawson Ballet West (BW) Academy builds future ballet and dance artists and audiences by providing training in classical ballet, flamenco, character, contemporary, hip-hop, and theatrical dance training. The BW Academy has over 1,000 students between its four campuses - Salt Lake City, Trolley Corners, Park City, and Utah County. With newlyrenovated student housing, the BW Academy is home to local, national, and international ballet students, with more than 50% of BW Academy students joining Ballet West.

From the Artistic Director Welcome to the opening of Ballet West’s (BW) 60th Anniversary Season and Ben Stevenson’s extravagantly dramatic, spooky, fun-filled, and elegantly classical telling of Dracula. We premiered Stevenson’s version of this gothic tale in 2011 and revived it in 2021. It has emerged as one of our company’s most requested works and so, due to popular demand, we bring it back this year just in time for one of America’s favorite holidays — Halloween! Ben Stevenson is arguably one of the world’s greatest story ballet choreographers. As such, I like to describe his Dracula as a wild ride through the Haunted Mansion at Disneyland. Ben Stevenson has brilliantly adapted Bram Stoker’s dark tale to the ballet stage, modeling it after such beloved 19th century classics as Swan Lake, The Sleeping Beauty, and Giselle. Using the music of Franz Liszt as arranged by John Lanchbery, Stevenson restructures and simplifies the Stoker novel for the dance stage, much as opera and ballet librettists have done for centuries with great pieces of literature. Stevenson opens the ballet with a classic “White Act,” but instead of a corps of Swans, Willis, or Shades, we have a corps de ballet of Dracula’s vampire brides reveling in their un-deadness as Dracula’s henchman, Renfield, ushers in his master’s next victim, Flora. In Act Two, we are introduced to the village below Dracula’s castle. The act is replete with traditional peasant character dances, a beautiful grand pas de deux performed by our young lovers, Fredrick and Svetlana, and finally a mad scene by poor, bitten Flora, culminating in the abduction of Svetlana by the fiendish Dracula. In the Act Three ending, similarly to many of the 1930’s classic horror movies, Dracula is vanquished in a sensational ending when Fredrick and the villagers storm the castle and expose the vampire to the sun. We have had a wonderful time sinking our teeth into this meaty choreography! My dancers have devoured their assignments with a ghoulish relish. But Ben Stevenson’s Dracula is more than just theatrical entertainment and fun hijinks; it truly is a classical work that has challenged the Ballet West artists both physically and artistically. If you enjoy the spectacle of this production, we hope you will join us for this entire 60th anniversary season. Directly following Dracula, we honor our founder Willam Christensen with a revival of his sumptuous ballet The Firebird, paired with the world premiere of former BW Demi-Soloist Joshua Whitehead’s Fever Dream and George Balanchine’s rousing Stars & Stripes. In December, Mr. C’s beloved evergreen classic, The Nutcracker, returns after our fifth invited trip back to Washington D.C.’s Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. In February, we bring back my version of one of the world’s greatest ballets — Swan Lake. April brings Love and War, with the BW premiere of renowned contemporary choreographer William Forsythe’s Blake Works I, making us one of only three American companies given the rights to dance this challenging work, appearing alongside the long-awaited revival of dynamic Red Angels to solo electric violin and the profound return of Kurt Jooss’ 1934 anti-war masterpiece The Green Table. Rounding out the year is our Family Classics presentation of Beauty & the Beast, 16
BALLET WEST
From the Artistic Director and finally, our Choreographic Festival returns with Asian Voices, a celebration of new creations focusing on Asian choreographers, musicians, and designers, including two world premieres by emerging choreographers Caili Quan and Zhongjing Fang. As always, we remain grateful for your patronage. Ballet West is your company, and we are proud to be cultural ambassadors to Utah, bringing the highest caliber of dance, both here at home and around the world.
Adam Sklute Artistic Director Ballet West Since 2007, Adam Sklute has expanded Ballet West’s outlook, repertoire, and visibility with exciting Company and world premieres, increased touring, heightened public exposure, and greater focus on the Ballet West Academy. He began his career with The Joffrey Ballet, rising through the ranks from dancer to Associate Director. His stewardship of Ballet West has been marked by both financial growth and elevated artistry, and was the subject of The CW Network’s docu-drama, Breaking Pointe, which aired for two seasons. From September 2016 to October 2017, Sklute took on the dual position of CEO and Artistic Director, overseeing both administrative and artistic operations of Ballet West. An internationally sought-after teacher and adjudicator, Sklute has received numerous awards, including Utah’s Enlightened 50 (2014), The Bronze Minuteman Award for Outstanding Service to Utah and The Nation (2015), and Utah Diversity Connection’s Business Award for outstanding commitment to diversity initiatives. Most recently, Sklute was included in Deseret Magazine’s 25 Changemakers of the West for his efforts to build greater equity and inclusion in classical ballet.

23–24 SEASON

From the Executive Director Happy 60th birthday, Ballet West! Utahns have much to be proud of this fall as Ballet West embarks on an ambitious and celebratory season marking its milestone 60th anniversary. Long noted as one of Utah’s cultural treasures, Ballet West has become one of America’s most highly regarded ballet companies. With artistry that rivals that of other national and international companies, Ballet West’s role is that of a cultural ambassador, bringing programs by leading choreographers to audiences worldwide. There is no ballet that more aptly signals autumn than Ben Stevenson’s Dracula. While this season marks only the third time Ballet West has presented Dracula, it returns after only two years, given the strong demand when last performed in 2021 after a 10-year hiatus. To accommodate this demand, an eighth performance has been added, enabling more people to enjoy the spectacle of this production that rivals any Broadway show yet with superb ballet! If you haven’t yet purchased a subscription, you should mark your dates for our next series entitled Firebird, which opens November 3rd at the Janet Quinney Lawson Capitol Theatre. The program opens with our founder, Willam Christensen’s, The Firebird, set to Stravinsky’s iconic score and created for Ballet West in 1967. The Firebird is followed by former Demi-Soloist Joshua Whitehead’s Fever Dreams, set to an original score composed by Josh himself! George Balanchine’s patriotic and rousing Stars & Stripes brings to a close an evening that showcases the remarkable versatility and artistry of our dancers with three very distinct works. Speaking of subscriptions, audiences continue to show their love of Ballet West with the third consecutive season of double-digit growth in the number of subscribers. Subscribing early gives you the most options for securing the best seats, especially amidst the surge in demand for tickets to our season. The growth in our audiences has been fueled by younger and more diverse patrons coming to Ballet West, an exciting trend as we kick off the 60th season! Add to this Ballet West’s strongest financial position in decades, and you have the ingredients for a future that holds great promise. As I begin my seventh season with Ballet West, I look back at the organization’s many accomplishments with pride and gratitude. Utahns love their Company, and this affection for Ballet West has enabled us to add programs, increase our presence in the community, and expand the scope of training offered by the Frederick Quinney Lawson Ballet West Academy across four campuses. Remarkably, these successes have been achieved with balanced budgets — thanks to you, our dedicated audience and donors.

BALLET WEST
From the Executive Director On behalf of this great organization, I am pleased to welcome you to our 60th Anniversary Season, and I am honored to join Adam Sklute in leading Ballet West into the future. With sincere gratitude,
Michael Scolamiero Executive Director Michael Scolamiero joined Ballet West after an extensive international search led by Michael Kaiser, President Emeritus of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Mr. Scolamiero previously served as Executive Director of Miami City Ballet for three years, during which time the organization achieved a significant reduction in debt, as well as robust growth in ticket revenue, contributions, and touring income. Prior to Miami City Ballet, Mr. Scolamiero was Pennsylvania Ballet’s Executive Director for 17 years, the longest tenure in the Company’s history and among the longest of any leader of a major ballet company. During his tenure, Mr. Scolamiero led the organization’s first capital campaign, which raised $11.9 million (against a $10 million goal) to build an endowment and fund repertoire expansion. At Ballet West, Mr. Scolamiero has played a key role in transforming the organization’s financial health. No longer using external financing to meet cash needs, Ballet West’s balance sheet is strong after realizing operating surpluses for three consecutive fiscal years. Mr. Scolamiero is currently working with the Board and management on a new strategic plan that will serve as a blueprint for Ballet West’s aspirations as the organization enters its 60th season and beyond.

During his professional career, Stevenson received numerous awards, including 3 gold medals at the International Ballet Competitions of 1972, 1982, and 1986. His contribution to ballet, as a dancer and choreographer, influences the art of ballet at an international level. In December of 1999, Queen Elizabeth II named Stevenson an Officer of the Order of the British Empire. Ben Stevenson is a recipient of the 2000 Dance Magazine Award and was recognized in 2018 by the Chinese government as an influential foreign expert across four decades during China’s Reform and Opening Up policy. He is celebrated as a Texas legend, winning the Texas Medal of Arts in 2005 for achieving greatness through his creative talents. Mr. Stevenson is one of the great storytellers of ballet. Known for creating splendor on stage, his choreography is both world-renowned and in high demand across ballet companies worldwide. His full-length works include: The Sleeping Beauty, Swan Lake, Romeo and Juliet, Cinderella, The Nutcracker, Coppelia, Don Quixote, Peer Gynt, Dracula, The Snow Maiden, and Cleopatra.
FRANZ LISZT Composer
Franz Liszt was a Hungarian virtuoso pianist and composer. He studied and played at Vienna and Paris, and for most of his early adulthood toured throughout Europe giving concerts. His virtuosity earned him approbations by composers and performers alike throughout Europe. His great generosity with both time and money benefited the lives of many people: victims of disasters, orphans, and the many students he taught for free. He also contributed to the Ludwig van Beethoven memorial fund. His piano compositions include works such as his Piano Sonata in B minor, and two piano concertos, which have entered the standard repertoire. He also made many exuberant piano transcriptions of operas, famous symphonies, Paganini Caprices, and Schubert Lieder. As would be expected from a pianist-composer of Liszt’s virtuosity, many of his piano compositions are amongst the most technically challenging in the repertoire.

Profiles DOMINIC WALSH Staging
In 2002, Dominic Walsh, Principal Dancer and Choreographer with Houston Ballet, founded Dominic Walsh Dance Theater. After the company’s debut in February 2003, Dance Magazine declared, “At last Houston has a contemporary dance company on par with its symphony, opera and ballet companies.” The company’s roster included works by Walsh, Mats Ek, Jiří Kylián, Mauro Bigonzetti, and Matthew Bourne. Walsh was born in Elgin, Illinois and started his training with Lisa Boehm, Frank Boehm, Warren Conover, and Larry Long in Chicago. He joined Houston Ballet in 1989, and was promoted to Principal Dancer by 1996. Walsh danced throughout Asia, Europe, and North America. Walsh has danced all the major classics including Swan Lake, Giselle, Don Quixote, Romeo and Juliet, and Manon with international stars such as Nina Ananiashvili and Alessandra Ferri. He danced Houston Ballet’s entire contemporary repertoire, and Ben Stevenson created numerous roles for him, including Marc Antony in Cleopatra. In 1998, Walsh created Flames of Eros on Houston Ballet. This work won the Choo-San Goh Award for Choreography. He created three more works for Houston Ballet and in 2004, Walsh left to pursue Dominic Walsh Dance Theater full-time. Walsh won a second Choo-San Goh Award in 2007 and received a 2008 Princess Grace Award, both for The Trilogy: Wolgang Amadeus Mozart. In 2012, he was inducted into the Fox Valley Hall of Fame. Walsh continues to receive commissions to set and create works nationally and internationally. Walsh served as the Resident Choreographer for Sarasota Ballet of Florida, creating/staging Wolfgang for Webb (2008), The Trilogy (2009), and Time out of Line (2011), Claire de Lune (2011) and he travels throughout the U.S. and abroad as a guest teacher and coach for both companies and academies. Walsh also stages the works of his longtime mentor, Ben Stevenson. The Carl Jung Center has shown interest in Walsh’s creative process and he has given lectures at Houston’s Jung Center. He has written for various publications on dance, and was a regular columnist for Origin Magazine. Walsh made his film debut as a co-director at the Brussels Short Film Festival in Spring 2015 with Malta Kano, TX. In 2015, Walsh became a proud father and closed DWDT after 12 seasons. In December 2015, he launched his 200-page photo book he created with company photographer, Gabriella Nissen, titled simply “Dominic Walsh Dance Theater”. In September of 2018, Walsh was Costume Designer for Stevenson’s Cinderella with National Ballet of China.
