About Ballet West From Balanchine to Bournonville, Petipa to Tharp, Ballet West boasts a rich and varied repertoire, elegant and versatile artists, and an American style and legacy that is as dynamic, expansive, and as unexpected as the Rocky Mountain region it represents. From its humble beginnings in 1963 as the only professional ballet company between Chicago and the West Coast, Ballet West has grown into one of America’s leading ballet companies. For 60 years, the Salt Lake City-based Company has entertained and excited audiences in Utah and worldwide by presenting the great classical story ballets, including America’s first and longest-running version of The Nutcracker, revivals of rarelyseen historical masterpieces, works by some of the world’s most renowned artists, and new cutting-edge creations by emerging choreographers. The Company also regularly tours both nationally and internationally.
willam christensen, founder of ballet west
Ballet West was established in Salt Lake City by co-founders Willam F. Christensen, often called the “Godfather of American ballet,” and Utah’s “First Lady of the Arts,” Glenn Walker Wallace. In 1951, Christensen established the first ballet department in an American university at The University of Utah. Over time, this program grew into the Utah Civic Ballet, Ballet West’s first incarnation. Prior to that, along with his brothers, Lew and Harold, Christensen made history by establishing the oldest full-ballet company in the western United States, the San Francisco Ballet. Since its inception, Ballet West has had five artistic directors, who have each helped build the Company’s unique and expansive profile – its founder, Willam Christensen, Bruce Marks, John Hart CBE, Jonas Kåge, and for the past 16 years, Adam Sklute, who has overseen the artistic product for the longest sustained growth of the Company since its founding. Ballet West continues to grow and evolve with 38 company members, 14 second company members, a thriving Academy, and one of the world’s largest ballet-based Education and Outreach programs, reaching over 100,000 children and adults throughout Utah and the Intermountain Region every year. The Frederick Quinney Lawson Ballet West (BW) Academy builds future ballet and dance artists and audiences by providing training in classical ballet, flamenco, character, contemporary, hip-hop, and theatrical dance training. The BW Academy has over 1,000 students between its four campuses, Salt Lake City, Trolley Corners, Park City, and Utah County. With newlyrenovated student housing, the BW Academy is home to local, national, and international ballet students, with more than 50% of BW Academy students joining Ballet West.

23–24 SEASON
15
From the Artistic Director Welcome to the second program of our 60th Anniversary season, which is also a tribute to our founder, Willam Christensen (Mr. C). Firebird is a triptych of works that celebrate the scope and vision of Mr. C, who was known internationally as the “Godfather of American ballet.” Born and raised in Brigham City, Utah, the Christensen brothers studied ballet and social dance from an early age. In the 1920s, they toured America with their wives in Vaudeville. They trained with renowned choreographers and teachers of the day such as Michel Fokine a young George Balanchine, and in the late 1930s, Mr. C founded the first full ballet company in America, the San Francisco Ballet, with the support of the famed founder of the San Francisco Opera, Gaetano Merolo. In San Francisco, Mr. C created the first American productions of Swan Lake, Coppelia, and The Nutcracker. In the early 1950s, Mr. C moved back to Utah, founding the first full ballet program in any university, The University of Utah’s Ballet Department - out of which was born The Utah Civic Ballet in 1963, later renamed Ballet West – to serve the entire Intermountain Region. For 60 years now, Ballet West has followed Mr. C’s lead to bring the highest quality, most diverse repertoire to the public in Utah and around the world, so I have selected this program’s repertoire to celebrate and honor that broad vision. The program opens with Mr. C’s own version of the historic masterpiece, The Firebird. Based on the traditional Russian fairy tale of a magical red bird who rescues a prince from monsters and then leads him to the woman he ends up marrying, The Firebird was originally commissioned in 1910 by the great Serge Diaghilev for his groundbreaking Paris company, Les Ballets Russes. The work had extravagant costumes by Avant Garde artist of the time Leon Bakst, a now-iconic musical score by a young Igor Stravinsky, and choreography by Ballets Russes’ most celebrated choreographer, Michel Fokine. The work was an instant hit. In 1949, George Balanchine produced a version of this now-revered ballet as a way of building audiences for his newly-established New York City Ballet. For this production, Balanchine used spectacular designs by Marc Chagall. In 1967, Mr. C, who had been a pupil of both Fokine and Balanchine, decided to produce his own version of The Firebird. I think it’s one of Mr. C’s best works, with sets and costumes by Ronald Crosby and his special brand of theatricality and showmanship. It has been lovingly re-staged by BW Archivist and Rehearsal Director Bruce Caldwell, who celebrates his own landmark 62 years with Mr. C and Ballet West. In a very different way, I chose to celebrate Mr. C with the world premiere of former Ballet West Demi-Soloist Joshua Whitehead’s creation, Fever Dream. For this work, Whitehead, who began with Ballet West as one of our very first Ballet West Academy Trainees, went on to have an extensive and powerful career as a dancer with the company for 12 years. Whitehead is a multi-talented individual as a photographer, videographer, and composer, actually composing the music for this new work, along 16
BALLET WEST
From the Artistic Director with the choreography. Fever Dream is a non-narrative work that immerses us in the world of dreams and the distorted and exaggerated way dreams represent our very common feelings and experiences. He first produced this ballet as a draft for the Ballet West Academy/artÉmotion 2022 Choreographic Workshop. I was so taken with his artistic voice that I commissioned him to fully produce Fever Dream on the main Ballet West company. I wanted to recognize Mr. C›s commitment to new works by producing this creation. He was always championing new choreographers, working to expose our audiences to the very best of ballet, be it classic or contemporary. Finally, we close the program with our revival of George Balanchine’s unabashed celebration of America, Stars & Stripes, created in 1958. This joyous, high energy, and technically demanding one-act ballet is a tour-de-force showpiece for any company and really shows off the strength on the entire ensemble. With music by the “March King” John-Philip Souza, as arranged by Hershy Kay, it is both pure classical ballet and tongue-in-cheek hijinks both elegant and funny. On a poetic note, at Ballet West’s first formal performance, Mr. Balanchine sent his principal artists, Melissa Hayden and Jacques D’Amboise, the original leads in Stars & Stripes, to perform the featured pas de deux on that opening performance. I also programmed this ballet to celebrate the world class company that Mr. C created and hopefully honor him as we move his company into the next 60 years. Willam Christensen’s story is uniquely American and his company in turn is a reflection of that pioneering spirit. All of us at Ballet West are proud to honor Mr. C’s achievements and consider his legacy with every forward, future step we take. Thank you for your support and patronage,
Adam Sklute Artistic Director, Ballet West The Willam Christensen Director’s Chair Sponsored by Peggy Bergmann
Since 2007, Adam Sklute has expanded Ballet West’s outlook, repertoire, and visibility with exciting Company and world premieres, increased touring, heightened public exposure, and greater focus on the Ballet West Academy. He began his career with The Joffrey Ballet, rising through the ranks from dancer to Associate Director. His stewardship of Ballet West has been marked by both financial growth and elevated artistry, and was the subject of The CW Network’s docu-drama, Breaking Pointe, which aired for two seasons. From September 2016 to October 2017, Sklute took on the dual position of CEO and Artistic Director, overseeing both administrative and artistic operations of Ballet West. An internationally sought-after teacher and adjudicator, Sklute has received numerous awards, including Utah’s Enlightened 50 (2014), The Bronze Minuteman Award for Outstanding Service to Utah and The Nation (2015), and Utah Diversity Connection’s Business Award for outstanding commitment to diversity initiatives. Most recently, Sklute was included in Deseret Magazine’s 25 Changemakers of the West for his efforts to build greater equity and inclusion in classical ballet.
23–24 SEASON
17
From the Executive Director This series of three vastly different works marks the second season in which Ballet West has followed its opening program with a mixed repertoire program. This represents an exciting period of growth for the organization, bringing more dance to our audiences and giving our incredible artists an opportunity to showcase their versatility and musicality, not to mention their incredible technique. Equally exciting is how quickly the public has embraced the expansion of Ballet West’s season, with subscriptions growing robustly year after year. Ballet West audience trends are not only encouraging, they are at odds with what many arts organizations are facing since bringing their art back to live audiences after the pandemic. Clearly, Utah wants live performances and especially those offered by their beloved Ballet West! In putting together this special anniversary season, Ballet West Artistic Director Adam Sklute has programmed a mix of familiar and new as well as audience favorites. This evening’s program pays tribute to our founder, Willam Christensen, with his 1967 The Firebird, set to Stravinsky’s iconic score. Former demi-soloist Josh Whitehead, also an accomplished composer in addition to being an innovative and talented choreographer, brings us Fever Dream, a work that originated as a commission from the Frederick Quinney Lawson Ballet West Academy artÉmotion for its choreographic workshop in 2022 and which he now reimagined for our company Closing the program is the popular Stars & Stripes by George Balanchine, a colleague and friend of Mr. C who supported Christensen’s work in the field in many respects. With its large cast and rousing patriotic score by John Philip Souza and arranged by Hershy Kay, Stars & Stripes will have you leaving the theater humming. Looking ahead, the Company’s long-awaited return to The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts later this month kicks off The Nutcracker season. All told, Ballet West will delight audiences with 35 performances of the nation’s first Nutcracker in Washington, D.C., Ogden, and Salt Lake City. Sales for the run at the Janet Quinney Lawson Capitol Theatre are strong, so delay getting your tickets at your own peril! The excitement around the 60th anniversary is palpable in so many ways. Aside from the electric performances by our dancers and strong demand for tickets, our work in the community remains more vibrant than ever. Ballet West serves more than 100,000 children and adults annually in schools, retirement communities, substance abuse treatment centers, and at the Janet Quinney Lawson Capitol Theatre. Ballet West is an integral part of the fabric of life in Utah and none of what we do would be possible without your tremendous support and generosity. All of us at Ballet West salute the

BALLET WEST
From the Executive Director role you play in making our beloved company one of America’s most highly respected and cherished dance organizations. Thank you for 60 wonderful years and we hope we earn your continued support for many years to come. With sincere gratitude,
Michael Scolamiero Executive Director Michael Scolamiero joined Ballet West after an extensive international search led by Michael Kaiser, President Emeritus of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Mr. Scolamiero previously served as Executive Director of Miami City Ballet for three years, during which time the organization achieved a significant reduction in debt, as well as robust growth in ticket revenue, contributions, and touring income. Prior to Miami City Ballet, Mr. Scolamiero was Pennsylvania Ballet’s Executive Director for 17 years, the longest tenure in the Company’s history and among the longest of any leader of a major ballet company. During his tenure, Mr. Scolamiero led the organization’s first capital campaign, which raised $11.9 million (against a $10 million goal) to build an endowment and fund repertoire expansion. At Ballet West, Mr. Scolamiero has played a key role in transforming the organization’s financial health. No longer using external financing to meet cash needs, Ballet West’s balance sheet is strong after realizing operating surpluses for three consecutive fiscal years. Mr. Scolamiero is currently working with the Board and management on a new strategic plan that will serve as a blueprint for Ballet West’s aspirations as the organization enters its 60th season and beyond.

In Memory Herbert C. Livsey, friend and supporter of Ballet West for over 30 years, passed away on Sept. 12, 2023. Herb was born August 20, 1941 and grew up in Salt Lake City. He attended the University of Utah and obtained his Juris Doctor from S.J. Quinney College of Law. He also obtained a Master of Laws LLM at New York University. He and Wilma Smith Livsey had six children. As a lawyer at Ray Quinney & Nebeker, Herb was handpicked by Joe Quinney to help administer the S.J. and Jessie E. Quinney Family Foundation. Herb also provided legal services for the Janet Q. Lawson Foundation, Frederick Q. Lawson Foundation, and the JoAnne L. Shrontz Foundation. Herb loved the arts and served on the Utah Opera and Utah Symphony Board. Although no one can be certain, and perhaps it was a dare, many years ago, Herb was casted as one of the Toreadors (living stage prop) in Bizet’s Carmen.
Sometime in the early 2000’s Ballet West desired to construct a new dance academy in Sugarhouse. The Quinney family, as well as others pledged their support for its design and construction. Through that process, Ballet West began to envision a dance academy next to the Capital Theatre instead of the Sugarhouse location. At that time the Capital Theatre was about to celebrate its 100 anniversary and was showing its age. Additionally, the Theatre had limited restrooms and ADA accessibility. A vision of what we all enjoy today was hatched. With tax credits about to expire, Herb worked with the Ballet and Salt Lake County to create a novel solution that married donors pledge agreements with new long-term financing. After all this work, there was a monetary shortfall and the project appeared doomed. As often happens in the best stories, at the darkest moments something magical happens. In this case, donors who believe in this community and the importance of the arts stepped forward. One after another they increased their support and backed Herb’s solution. And as they like to say, the rest is history. The Ballet is grateful to Herb and so many others who continually support our mission and vision forward. 23–24 SEASON

THE FIREBIRD Choreography: Willam Christensen Music: Igor Stravinsky Staging: Bruce Caldwell Scenic and Costume Design: Ronald Crosby Lighting Design: James K. Larsen Masks: Logan Long Featuring the Ballet West Orchestra Conducted by Music Director: Jared Oaks World Premiere: October 25, 1967, Ballet West, Kingsbury Hall, Salt Lake City, Utah Synopsis In a deep forest, encircled by a carved golden wall, is the castle of the sinister King Kostchei. In front of the wall are rows of statues – knights turned to stone while attempting to rescue their sweethearts, held hostage by the corrupt King Kostchei. Outside this wall grows a tree of golden apples. Ivan Tsarevich, a young prince, enters the garden. As he examines the gigantic wall, a remarkable bird flies down to feed on the golden apples. The bird is like no other, bearing feathers of flame and emanating an aura of magic. Ivan, fascinated by the illuminated creature, succeeds in catching her. She begs for freedom and, in a measure of kindness, he releases her. In gratitude, the Firebird gives Ivan one of her feathers and tells him that if he is ever in trouble, he need only wave it to summon her. As the Firebird flies away, the gates in the wall open, ushering in 13 beautiful princesses to dance and play in the moonlight. The evil King Kostchei allows his captive maidens one hour of freedom each day. If they do not return, they will die. The Tsarevna, the loveliest of all the princesses, entrances Ivan, and he leaves his hiding place to meet her. They dance together and then part with a vow of love as the princesses return to the depths of the castle. Ivan, determined to save his beautiful Tsarevna, attempts to open the gates when suddenly the garden is filled with grotesque monsters who seize him. King Kostchei appears and begins to turn Ivan to stone. In desperation, Ivan waves the Firebird’s feather. The wonderous bird arrives and lulls the monsters to sleep. She reveals the hiding place of a great egg, which holds the soul of Kostchei’s power. Ivan breaks the egg, thus destroying King Kostchei and freeing the princesses. The evil kingdom vanishes and the enchanted statues of the knights come back to life and reclaim their princesses as Ivan and Tsarevna are married.

FEVER DREAM Choreography: Joshua Whitehead Musical Composition: Joshua Whitehead Costume Design: Jason Hadley Lighting Design: James K. Larsen World Premiere: Nov. 3, 2023, Ballet West, Capitol Theatre, Salt Lake City, Utah Fever Dream is an enthralling contemporary ballet that takes the audience on a journey through a dreamlike world. Sequel to Whispers of the Sandman, Fever Dream delves into the surreal and sometimes unsettling realm of the subconscious mind. The story revolves around a dreamer who is torn between his desire to escape from the mundane aspects of his day-to-day life and the eerie allure of the dream world. With evocative choreography that seamlessly blends classical ballet with elements of hip-hop and contemporary dance, the audience is mesmerized by the fluidity and artistry of the dancers. The distinctive use of the color red to represent key characters adds a visually striking element to the production. As the dreamer navigates through this hypnotic and mysterious landscape, the boundaries between reality and fantasy are blurred, leaving both him and the audience captivated in this compelling Fever Dream.

World Premiere: Jan. 17, 1958, New York City Ballet, New York Utah Premiere: Sept. 28, 1983, Capitol Theatre, Revival April 2010 The performance of Stars and Stripes, a Balanchine Ballet® is presented by arrangement with The George Balanchine Trust® and has been produced in accordance with the Balanchine Style® and Balanchine Technique® Service Standards® established and provided by the Trust. This ballet, more than any other, symbolizes George Balanchine’s deep love and respect for America. He and Hershy Kay selected several of John Philip Sousa’s marches and used them in working out what can only be described as a balletic parade. The Five Campaigns, or movements, of this ballet use the following marches: Corcuran Cadets (1st Regiment), Thunder and Gladiator (2nd Regiment), Rifle Regiment (3rd Regiment), Liberty Bell and El Capitan (Pas de Deux), Stars and Stripes (Finale). This is quintessential Balanchine – pure, elegant, challenging, classical ballet presented with lighthearted and fun-loving showmanship.

Profiles WILLAM CHRISTENSEN
Choreographer, The Firebird
Recognized as one of the leading pioneers in American dance, Willam Christensen, known affectionately as “Mr. C,” played a key role in the artistic contributions to Utah and to the United States. Along with brothers Lew and Harold, Mr. C began his career with dance lessons from his uncle at the Christensen Academy in Brigham City, Utah. Together, the brothers went on to a professional career in Vaudeville, and then in 1937, they established the oldest ballet company in the United States, the San Francisco Ballet. While with the San Francisco Ballet, Mr. C choreographed the first full-length version of The Nutcracker ballet ever performed in the United States. In 1951, he founded the first ballet department at an American university, the University of Utah. Shortly thereafter, in 1953, he formed the University Ballet Theatre, the first ballet company ever incorporated into a university. In 1963, Willam Christensen, in conjunction with Glenn Walker Wallace, founded Ballet West under the name Utah Civic Ballet. He served as artistic director for Ballet West until 1978. Mr. C’s contributions to dance also include producing the first full-length version of Coppélia ever to be mounted by an American choreographer and producing the first full-length Swan Lake in the United States. In addition, Mr. C produced the first American Cinderella and his version of Stravinsky’s Firebird.
JOSHUA WHITEHEAD
Choreographer and Music, Fever Dream
Joshua Whitehead, from Chesapeake, Virginia, joined the Ballet West main company in 2010 and was promoted to Demi-Soloist in 2016. As a professional dancer, Joshua was drawn to the world of ballet and spent countless hours exploring all aspects of the art form such as choreography, music, and capturing movement with his camera, perfecting his craft. His performances are characterized by their fluidity, grace, and emotional depth, and he has a gift for captivating audiences. He has also worked as a dance instructor, sharing his knowledge and love for the art form with students of all ages.

BALLET WEST
Profiles GEORGE BALANCHINE
Choreographer, Stars & Stripes
George Balanchine is regarded as one of the foremost contemporary choreographers in the world of ballet. He came to America in 1933 and established the School of American Ballet in 1934. In 1948, Balanchine established the New York City Ballet and presented its first program consisting of Concerto Barocco, Orpheus, and Symphony in C. Balanchine served as ballet master for the New York City Ballet from 1948 until his death in 1983, choreographing the majority of their productions introduced by the company since its inception. An authoritative catalogue of his works lists 425 pieces created by Balanchine in his lifetime. Balanchine’s style has been described as neoclassic. A gifted musician himself, his response to Romantic Classicism was to de-emphasize the plot in his ballets, preferring to let “dance and music be the star of the show.” Nevertheless, tantalizing hints of a story color his works in such ballets as Apollo, Harlequinade, Liebesliede Waltzer, and La Sonnambula. The New York City Ballet and School of American Ballet remain dedicated to the preservation of Balanchine’s ideals.
IGOR STRAVINSKY
Composer, The Firebird
Born in Russia, Igor Stravinsky (1882-1971) did not discover his musical talent until he enrolled in law school. There, under the influence of Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, Stravinsky soon found the limelight in composing for the Ballets Russes: Firebird (1910), Petrushka (1911), and The Rite of Spring (1913). The latter work caused a celebrated scandal at its first performance and remains one of the best-known and most influential pieces of 20th-century music. Stravinsky drew inspiration from a wide range of music, including contemporary artist Pablo Picasso, jazz movements in the United States, and a continuous interest in baroque and classical pieces. The restless, “spiky” rhythms and sharp, pungent harmonies run through Stravinsky’s work like an indelible musical fingerprint. These elements of his style, and the versatile ways in which he used them, help to explain his status as one of the 20th century’s greatest composers.

Profiles JOHN PHILIP SOUSA
Composer, Stars & Stripes Photo by Elmer Chickering
John Philip Sousa (1854-1932), the “March King,” was an important figure in the history of American bands and American band music. He enlisted as an apprentice in the Marine Band in 1868, serving for almost seven years. He joined Offenbach’s orchestra in 1876 at the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia. In 1880, at the age of 25, he became the leader of the United States Marine Band, a post he held for more than 12 years. A Sousa concert usually consisted of 25 to 36 pieces, one of which was, inevitably, “The Stars and Stripes Forever.”
HERSHY KAY
Music Adaptation & Orchestration, Stars & Stripes
Hershy Kay (1919-1981) established himself as a preeminent orchestrator of musicals with Leonard Bernstein’s On The Town in 1944. In addition to Stars & Stripes, his works for the ballet include Cakewalk, Clowns, Western Symphony, Who Cares, and Union Jack. His works for the musical theater include Peter Pan, Once Upon a Mattress, Candide, A Chorus Line, Evita, and Barnum. A composer in his own right, Hershy Kay also reconstructed Louis Moreau Gottschalk’s Grande Tarantelle for Piano and Orchestra, which later became the Balanchine ballet Tarantella. Mr. Kay’s work also includes a children’s record, Mother Goose.
BRUCE CALDWELL Staging, The Firebird
Bruce Caldwell began his ballet career in 1961 in the children’s roles of Willam Christensen’s The Nutcracker. He joined Ballet West as an apprentice in 1968 and rose through the ranks to become a Principal in 1972, a position he held for 18 years before joining the artistic staff in 1990. In 1989, he received the Salt Lake Chamber of Commerce Excellence in the Arts Award, presented by the Utah Arts Council. Caldwell was appointed to his present position of Rehearsal Director in 1997 and assumed the additional role of Company Archivist in 2007.

Profiles KARINSKA
Costume Design, Stars & Stripes
Varvara Jmoudsky, better known as Barbara Karinska or simply Karinska (October 3, 1886 – October 18, 1983), was an Oscar-winning costumier of cinema, ballet, musical and dramatic theatre, lyric opera, and ice spectacles. Over her 50-year career, which began at age 41, Karinska earned legendary status time and again through her continuing collaborations with stage designers including Christian Bérard, André Derain, Irene Sharaff, Raoul Pêne du Bois and Cecil Beaton; performer-producers Louis Jouvet and Sonja Henie; and ballet producers René Blum, Colonel de Basil and Serge Denham. Her longest and most-renowned collaboration was with choreographer George Balanchine for more than 70 ballets. The first known work was “The Celebrated Popoff Porcelain,” a one-act ballet for Nikita Balieff’s 1929 La Chauve-Souris with music by Tchaikovsky for which Karinska executed the costumes design by Sergey Tchekhonin. She began to design costumes for Balanchine ballets in 1949 with Emmanuel Chabrier’s Bourrèe Fantasque for the newlyfounded New York City Ballet. Their final collaboration was the 1977 Vienna Waltzes. Balanchine and Karinska together developed the American (or “powder puff”) tutu ballet costume, which became an international costume standard. She was the first costume designer to win the Capezio Dance Award, in 1962, for costumes “of visual beauty for the spectator and complete delight for the dancer.”
