F ROM T H E A RT I S T IC DI R E CTOR Welcome, I established Ballet West’s annual Innovations series in 2008 and it is amazing to see how this program has developed over eight years. Innovations is a platform for new and experimental creations for ballet. It is a testing ground for untried, emerging, and established choreographers, in particular our Ballet West dancers, giving them an opportunity to take chances and experiment. This is a luxury we do not often have. But by making the program all about risk taking and exploring untried territory, our choreographers and our audiences alike can immerse themselves in the creative process and hopefully enjoy the journey as much as the destination. Over the years, Innovations has presented works by a handful of established choreographers including giving Utah audiences their first glimpse of the work of Ballet West’s Resident Choreographer Nicolo Fonte with his 2009 The Immeasurable Cadences Within. We have created a launching point for several emerging choreographers and this year I am proud to produce a work by Utah native Garrett Smith. The program has promoted the work of female choreographers by presenting pieces by nine different women. And we have presented 25 new creations by thirteen different Ballet West Artists. This year we open with newly named Principal Artist Emily Adams’ Homage inspired by Salvador Dali’s Sculpture ‘Homage to Terpsichore.’ Emily has a unique way of moving dancers through space and a delicate, sometimes quirky sense of musicality that I find so intriguing, Homage is Emily’s first full-act commission. The program also includes First Soloist Adrian Fry’s new Pulse. Dealing with the workings of the human heart Pulse will explore both the physical mechanics and the emotions that come out of our hearts. In 2013 I had Nicolo Fonte create his dynamic Presto for our 50th Anniversary Gala and it has met with great acclaim on tour but this will be its formal Utah premiere for the general public. Also Demi-Soloist Katlyn Addison will present her first commission for Ballet West – The Hunt. With a live drummer on stage audiences will experience the animalistic “heartbeat” pounding of drums and how it drives us to move. The program closes with Garrett Smith’s Facades to an arrangement of baroque and contemporary music. Originally from Salt Lake City, Utah, Garrett currently dances with Norwegian National Ballet and has just been named Resident Choreographer of Milwaukee Ballet. Facades is a study of people from the Baroque era, their mores, intrigues and loves. Innovations is necessary in my opinion. For our dancers having the opportunity to create expands their horizons as artists. Equally important is the opportunity to be created on and by exposing Ballet West artists to outside voices it helps illuminate their own visions and expands the boundaries of possibility and expectation for them and for you our audience. As always I am grateful for your patronage and hope you enjoy Innovations 2015.

F ROM TH E E X ECU TI V E DIR ECTOR

When I sat down last fall to write my playbill letter for the opening production of the season, Giselle, I was filled with anticipation, enthusiasm, and excitement. I knew the season would exercise Ballet West’s resources: we would open a new building, tour to Washington D.C., New York, and Canada, and that the year would be filled with quintessential ballets and vigorous new works. Last fall, the finale to the season literally seemed thousands of miles away. Now, in a blink of an eye, our 2014-15 season is coming to a close and Ballet West has received accolades at home in Utah and from around the world on so many different levels. Our tours were soldout, ticket sales at home have broken records, and we’ve settled into our new home, the spectacular Jessie Eccles Quinney Ballet Centre. By any measurement, this season has been unprecedented. In addition to these feats we find ourselves not just bidding farewell to a record-breaking year, but also saying goodbye to a dancer who has represented the very best of Ballet West. As you know, Christiana Bennett, our prima ballerina has decided to retire at the end of this season. She has inspired a generation of young dancers, and delighted audiences for 16 years. As we witnessed during this season’s Swan Lake and Giselle, Ms. Bennett leaves at the pinnacle of her career. Her perspective, grace, and talent will be missed. While this season has been quite remarkable, next season’s repertoire promises to be just as spectacular. With modern, sophisticated new works, mixed with beautiful, luscious classics like Romeo and Juliet. I know we’ll be saying hello again very soon. In closing, thank you for everything you’ve done to support this amazing Company. We are eternally grateful. We look forward to seeing you in the fall! Sincerely,

Scott Altman Executive Director

With Presto, choreographer Nicolo Fonte takes the dancers into a new realm. The ballet is at once sculptural and abstract but profoundly emotional and intense. One of Nicolo’s great gifts as a choreographer is to reinvent and indeed even distort the classical idiom; creating a new and exciting movement quality that perfectly represents ballet in the 21st Century. — Adam Sklute. CASTING THE HUNT CHOREOGRAPHY: Katlyn Addison MUSIC: Cameron Hodges, drummer and Mychael Johnson, producer COSTUME DESIGN: David Heuvel LIGHTING DESIGN: Nicholas Cavallaro

My inspiration comes from combining two things to create this piece: my love for the powerful sounds of the drum of a heartbeat and the animalistic movement qualities of the dancers. It was important for me to have a live drummer in my piece. The musical process has been a learning experience with Cameron Hodges, a very talented drummer and Mychael Johnson, the producer, who has helped the vision come to life. Working with them has allowed me to explore my musical creativity. Although this is all very new to me as a choreographer and dancer, it has been an exciting journey. — Katlyn Addison FRI 5/15 — THURS 5/21 — SAT 5/23 EVE

LEADERSHIP

Adam Sklute BALLET WEST ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

As Artistic Director of Ballet West, Adam Sklute has expanded the company’s repertoire and visibility with exciting company premieres, increased touring, heightened public exposure and greater focus on Ballet West Academy. Under Sklute’s leadership BW has toured extensively, appearing three times at Washington DC’s Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts (2008 Ballet Across America – Serenade, and two week-long runs of The Nutcracker in 2012 and 2014); a 2013 engagement at Chicago’s famed Auditorium Theater with his The Sleeping Beauty and a mixed repertory program; twice at New York City Center’s Fall for Dance Festival (Les Biches, 2009; Grand Pas Paquita, 2012); and twice at the Chicago Dancing Festival (Serenade 2010; Sinfonietta 2011). In the past five years, the company has also appeared at Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts in 2011; The Laguna Dance Festival in 2010; Las Vegas with Nevada Ballet Theater in both 2010 (Sinfonietta) and 2012 (Jewels in collaboration with NBT and PNB); and Aspen, CO., New York, NY, Victoria, BC and Dallas, TX all during the 2014/15 season. In 2009, BW graced the cover of Dance Magazine for the first time in 25 years and again was on the cover in 2013. Since 2007, the company has garnered numerous reviews and articles in such publications as The New York Times, The Washington Post, Dance Magazine, Ballet Review, and Pointe to name a few. In 2012 and 2013 Ballet West was the subject of the BBC Worldwide Production’s docudrama television series Breaking Pointe which aired on The CW channel. Sklute has introduced BW to renowned, contemporary choreographers such as Nicolo Fonte, Jiri Kylián, Mark Morris, and Twyla Tharp, among others, while expanding the company’s Balanchine repertoire and adding early 20th century Diaghilev-era masterpieces. In addition to reintroducing lost elements of Christensen’s production of The Nutcracker and reconstructing his The Firebird, Sklute conceived and produced new versions of Swan Lake, The Sleeping Beauty and Giselle. He developed BW’s wildly successful annual Family Series and Innovations programs . A native of Berkeley, California, Sklute began dancing at the age of 16. His early training was at the Oakland Ballet and San Francisco Ballet schools. After only two years of formal study he joined The Joffrey II Dancers (The Joffrey’s apprentice company). Two years later he was asked to join The Joffrey Ballet. Sklute was one of the last two artists personally chosen by Robert Joffrey. He danced with The Joffrey from 1985 to 2000 and then rose through the ranks to Associate Director in 2005. Sklute became Artistic Director of BW in 2007. He has extensive television and film credits and is an Adjunct Professor at The University of Utah and is an internationally sought after a teacher, lecturer, coach and judge for ballet worldwide.

CHOREOGRAPHERS Nicolo Fonte RESIDENT CHOREOGRAPHER

Choreographer Nicolo Fonte has created over 40 new works for dance companies spanning the globe, garnering praise and generating excitement for his daring and theatrical approach to dance. The Australian Ballet, Royal Danish Ballet and The Dutch National Ballet, among many others, all have works of his in their repertoire. Whether made to Ravel’s brash Bolero or the quiet intricacy of a Bach violin piece, Fonte ballets have common ground: “The choreography is inventive, creating expressive original shapes built on an undercurrent of implicit human relationships” (Foyer/Dance Europe). “What impresses the most is that his choreography is obviously the result of a personal reflexion - distinctly and unmistakably Fonte, proof of a rare quality” (Michel Odin / Danse). In addition to dancing his overwhelmingly successful “Bolero" and the enigmatic "Immeasurable Cadences Within", since becoming Resident Choreographer for Ballet West in 2012, Nicolo has created the very powerful and exciting "The Rite of Spring" and the jarringly beautiful “Presto", both to audience and critical acclaim.

Garrett Smith CHOREOGRAPHER

Choreographer Garrett Smith was born in Salt Lake City, Utah and began his training with the Utah Regional Ballet. Garrett danced in the 2002 Winter Olympics Opening Ceremonies, and toured Austria in the Tanszsommer Festival. Garrett was named a Presidential Scholar in the Arts where he was honored to meet George W. Bush at the White House and perform his choreography at The Kennedy Center. Garrett studied at the Houston Ballet Academy where he created five works for Houston Ballet II’s repertoire, which were taken on tours through the United States, China, Hungary, and Toronto as part of the Assemble Internationale 2013. Garrett later joined Houston Ballet. During this time he created his first work on the company through an award presented to him by Peter Martins from the New York Choreographic Institute Fellowship. Garrett was later commissioned by Houston Ballet to create a new work in their seasons opening quad bill program. Garrett currently dances with Norwegian National Ballet, and guests with Salt Contemporary Dance. Garrett has had the great pleasure to work personally and dance works by choreographers Jiři Kylían, Nacho Duato, Jorma Elo, and Alexander Ekman. He has danced other works by choreographers William Forsythe, Nicolo Fonte, Christopher Bruce, Liam Scarlett, Stanton Welch, and Medhi Walerski. Garrett has created other works for Norwegian National Ballet, and was selected to create for the National Choreographers Initiative 2014, and was recently accepted as a finalist for the Milwaukee Ballet’s Genesis Choreographic Competition 2015 where his new creation “Mortal Form” took 1st place. Garrett will create a new work for Milwaukee Ballet as a part of this award. Houston Ballet has also commissioned Garrett to create a new work to premiere in September 2015.
