About Ballet West
From Balanchine to Bournonville, Petipa to Tharp, Ballet West boasts a rich and varied repertoire, elegant and versatile artists, and an American style and legacy that is as dynamic, expansive, and as unexpected as the Rocky Mountain region it represents.
From its humble beginnings in 1963 as the only professional ballet company between Chicago and the West Coast, Ballet West has grown into one of America’s leading ballet companies. For 60 years, the Salt Lake City-based Company has entertained and excited audiences in Utah and worldwide by presenting the great classical story ballets, including America’s first and longest-running version of The Nutcracker, revivals of rarelyseen historical masterpieces, works by some of the world’s most renowned artists, and new cutting-edge creations by emerging choreographers. The Company also regularly tours both nationally and internationally.
Ballet West was established in Salt Lake City by co-founders Willam F. Christensen, often called the “Godfather of American ballet,” and Utah’s “First Lady of the Arts,” Glenn Walker Wallace. In 1951, Christensen established the first ballet department in an American university at The University of Utah. Over time, this program grew into the Utah Civic Ballet, Ballet West’s first incarnation. Prior to that, along with his brothers, Lew and Harold, Christensen made history by establishing the oldest full-ballet company in the western United States, the San Francisco Ballet.
Since its inception, Ballet West has had five artistic directors, who have each helped build the Company’s unique and expansive profile – its founder, Willam Christensen, Bruce Marks, John Hart CBE, Jonas Kåge, and for the past 16 years, Adam Sklute, who has overseen the artistic product for the longest sustained growth of the Company since its founding. Ballet West continues to grow and evolve with 38 company members, 14 second company members, a thriving Academy, and one of the world’s largest ballet-based Education and Outreach programs, reaching over 100,000 children and adults throughout Utah and the Intermountain Region every year.
The Frederick Quinney Lawson Ballet West (BW) Academy builds future ballet and dance artists and audiences by providing training in classical ballet, flamenco, character, contemporary, hip-hop, and theatrical dance training. The BW Academy has over 1,000 students between its four campuses, Salt Lake City, Trolley Corners, Park City, and Utah County. With newlyrenovated student housing, the BW Academy is home to local, national, and international ballet students, with more than 50% of BW Academy students joining Ballet West.
With this eclectic and ever-expanding outlook, Ballet West is truly an American pioneer in dance. By honoring the history and traditions of our great artform, while constantly moving forward with new and untried concepts, we continue to keep ballet in Utah and the world alive and thriving into the 21st Century and beyond.

From the Artistic Director
Welcome to Ballet West’s Spring mixed repertory program, Love & War.
Love & War is designed to reflect our humanity, showing us our individual soulful divinity, our power and defiance, and also the consequences of our basest actions. The program takes us on a journey from the elysian fields of William Forsythe’s Blake Works I, to the dynamic struggle between the sacred and the profane in Ulysses Dove’s Red Angels, and finally to one of the greatest anti-war statements ever created, Kurt Jooss’ The Green Table - a work that takes no sides, but tells us that the only true winner in war is death.
William Forsythe is widely regarded as one of the worlds foremost living choreographers. He began as a dancer first with The Joffrey Ballet and then The Stuttgart Ballet where he started to choreograph. His unique use of the classical ballet vocabulary mixed with an extreme extension of the body and his acute musicality made his work groundbreaking and he became a much sought after choreographer. In 1984, he was named the Artistic Director of the Frankfurt Ballet, which became his artistic home until 2004.
In 1986, at the invitation of the renowned ballet artist Rudolph Nureyev, Forsythe was commissioned by The Paris Opera Ballet to create what is now considered his bestknown work - In the Middle, Somewhat Elevated (a ballet in Ballet West’s repertoire that we have presented twice in past years). Forsythe’s work can be described as powerful, dynamic, unexpected and pulse pounding – stretching the body to its extremes and moving artists with great speed through space in surprising and unexpected ways. But in 2016, he created a new work for The Paris Opera Ballet - Blake Works I - and in my opinion it is one of his most lyrical and “classical” works ever. All of Forsythe’s speed of attack, unique hyper extension of the body and intricate musicality are part of this great work, but there is a purity that comes out in this ballet, along with subtle nods to historic classical ballets and an overall, unexpected sense of stately elegance which I believe derives in large part from Forsythe’s choice in music. Blake Works I uses seven songs by the British singer songwriter James Blake and his album The Colour in Anything. Between Blake’s soulful singing and the nuanced rhythms of his music, the work is propelled in manners both gentle and exciting, extending not just the artists, but Forsythe himself into a new realm.
In 1994 American dancer/choreographer Ulysses Dove created Red Angels for New York City Ballet’s Diamond Project, a program of new choreography similar to Ballet West’s Innovations or Choreographic Festival. Ulysses Dove had trained in modern dance with the great choreographers Merce Cunningham, Pearl Lang, and Anna Sokolow before training with Alvin Ailey and becoming one of Ailey’s leading dancers. Dove’s choreography has been noted for its rhythmic power and sensuality. I first brought Dove’s Red Angels to Ballet West in 2008 as part of one of the first Gala performances I presented. The work is dynamic and sexy. It shows off the dancers’ technique and power as performers. But look under the exterior veneer of bravado and one can see a deeper drama – an internal battle of yearning and a split need for control and acceptance. This is what makes this brief work so intriguing. Again, it’s the score that propels it as the almost jarring music of Richard Einhorn’s Maxwell’s Demon, played live by Mary Rowell - one of only two musicians in the world who play this complex work – and it drives Red Angels breathlessly forward from a stark beginning through to its powerful ending.
18 BALLET WEST
From the Artistic Director
We close with our revival of Kurt Jooss’ astounding The Green Table. This remarkable ballet is a piece of dance history. Created in 1932, it is a work that forever changed the trajectory of dance and reimagined how dance artists could present the human struggle. Kurt Jooss trained as a dancer, actor, and singer and was a disciple of Rudolph van Lagen, who created one of the very few dance notation systems in the world. Jooss conceived of The Green Table in the late 1920s and produced this profound work as a statement against war. He based the ballet off of the medieval woodcuts depicting the specter of death leading archetypal figures of humanity to their demise.
Presented in eight tableaux, The Green Table is a supreme example of German expressionism from between the two World Wars. From the almost comical beginning of caricature politicians debating incessantly and declaring war for apparently no reason, we move to the figure of Death marching forward with an unstoppable force of destruction and each successive tableau presenting various stories of humanity during wartime, the fight, the suffering, and the loss that is inflicted on them because of the politicians’ decision. In each scene Death takes another individual in a different manner – be it violently with the soldiers at the end of the battle, or quietly and gently with the old, refugee mother, everyone eventually succumbs except the politicians and the cowardly profiteer who escapes Death only to continue taking advantage of others’ suffering for another day.
The score for two pianos, by Fredrich Cohen, is a small miracle in my opinion. A constant developing set of variations on the initial tango theme that accompanies the sleazy politicians. The theme morphs to embody the quality of each character in each scene telling us their tales with deep emotion, beauty, and an almost mathematical clarity.
When The Green Table premiered in 1932, it was instantly hailed as a masterpiece and in 1933 Germany’s new Chancellor – Adolf Hitler, invited Jooss to become one of Germany’s new leading artists, with one condition, that Jooss stop working with his composer Cohen, a Jewish man, and the other Jewish members of his troop. Jooss refused and he, his family, and the entire troop immediately fled Germany to live out World War 2 and beyond in England’s countryside. The Green Table is a work that honors the people who are trapped in the middle of war, and it urges us to feel compassion for their suffering. The Green Table has been revived numerous times around the world since its premiere. Sadly, it never seems to stop being relevant.
As always, we are so grateful for your patronage. We hope this journey through Love & War will be inspiring, thought provoking, and moving to you all.
With Gratitude and Appreciation,
Adam Sklute
Artistic Director, Ballet West
Since 2007, Adam Sklute has expanded Ballet West’s outlook, repertoire, and visibility with exciting Company and world premieres, increased touring, heightened public exposure, and greater focus on the Ballet West Academy. He began his career with The Joffrey Ballet, rising through the ranks from dancer to Associate Director. His stewardship of Ballet West has been marked by both financial growth and elevated artistry, and was the subject of The CW Network’s docu-drama, Breaking Pointe, which aired for two seasons. From September 2016 to October 2017, Sklute took on the dual position of CEO and Artistic Director, overseeing both administrative and artistic operations of Ballet West. An internationally sought-after teacher and adjudicator, Sklute has received numerous awards, including Utah’s Enlightened 50 (2014), The Bronze Minuteman Award for Outstanding Service to Utah and The Nation (2015), and Utah Diversity Connection’s Business Award for outstanding commitment to diversity initiatives. Most recently, Sklute was included in Deseret Magazine’s 25 Changemakers of the West for his efforts to build greater equity and inclusion in classical ballet.
19 23–24 SEASON
From the Executive Director
Remarkble! Just one word best describes Ballet West’s 60th Anniversary season. Remarkable artistry and stellar performances, coupled with exceptional financial results, places Ballet West in the national spotlight as a true success story.
The performance you are about to see sums up how truly special our company is. Having permission to perform the works of William Forsythe is an honor for any company, and one as challenging as Blake Works I places Ballet West in very elite company. This Ballet West premiere will push our dancers to their limits, once again proving our dancers are among the most talented anywhere. Ulysses Dove’s high energy Red Angels, which returns to the repertoire after a lengthy hiatus, is followed by another long-awaited revival, The Green Table by Kurt Jooss. A landmark work that is both dance and theater, The Green Table is, sadly, as relevant today as it was when it was created in 1932. As you leave the theater, I expect you will agree that Ballet West is offering Utah audiences artistry at a level found in major cities throughout the world.
All of us at Ballet West are immensely proud of the work we bring to you. We hold ourselves to very high standards, knowing our audiences deserve to see the very best in classical ballet and contemporary dance. Our 60th Anniversary season exceeded all of our expectations, from record-breaking sales for Dracula, The Nutcracker, and Swan Lake, to double-digit growth in our subscription base and strong financial results.
Our success is made possible by you. Your continued, loyal support as ticket buyers and donors is more than meaningful. It is our very lifeblood and we do not take it for granted. On behalf of all of us at Ballet West, we are honored by your commitment and our gratitude goes beyond words.

THANK YOU for making this season memorable, rewarding, and a resounding success.
Warm wishes,
Michael Scolamiero
The Elizabeth Solomon Executive Director SUNDAY
Michael Scolamiero joined Ballet West after an extensive international search led by Michael Kaiser, President Emeritus of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Mr. Scolamiero previously served as Executive Director of Miami City Ballet for three years, during which time the organization achieved a significant reduction in debt, as well as robust growth in ticket revenue, contributions, and touring income. Prior to Miami City Ballet, Mr. Scolamiero was Pennsylvania Ballet’s Executive Director for 17 years, the longest tenure in the Company’s history and among the longest of any leader of a major ballet company. During his tenure, Mr. Scolamiero led the organization’s first capital campaign, which raised $11.9 million (against a $10 million goal) to build an endowment and fund repertoire expansion. At Ballet West, Mr. Scolamiero has played a key role in transforming the organization’s financial health. No longer using external financing to meet cash needs, Ballet West’s balance sheet is strong after realizing operating surpluses for three consecutive fiscal years. Mr. Scolamiero is currently working with the Board and management on a new strategic plan that will serve as a blueprint for Ballet West’s aspirations as the organization enters its 60th season and beyond.

The Colour in Anything. Since making his first piece, Urlicht, for Stuttgart Ballet in 1976, Forsythe has never ceased experimenting with choreography, often mixing text, video, songs and electronic music into the live action. Fascinated by ballet’s rigorous formality, he has gradually returned to the classical vocabulary, and in Blake Works I he makes sure nothing distracts from its physical ingenuity and emotional expressivity.

Inspired by a medieval Dance of Death and the aftermath of World War I, The Green Table won first prize at the international competition organized by Rolf Maré, founder-director of Les Archives International de la Danse, Paris. It depicts various facets of war, beginning with a conference and going through mobilization, combat, war profiteering, refugees, and again, the conference, with Death present in every scene.

Story - The Green Table
The Green Table at 92
By Josh Jones (April 2017)
NINETY-TWO YEARS AFTER KURT JOOSS’ GROUNDBREAKING DEBUT OF THE GREEN TABLE, THE NARRATIVE IS JUST AS RELEVANT, AND THE DRAMA IS JUST AS SEARING AS THE DAY IT WAS PRODUCED.
Witnessing his country being torn apart by nationalism, populism, and antiSemitism, Kurt Jooss choreographed a 30-minute ballet in 1932, The Green Table subtitled “A Dance of Death in Eight Scenes.” Jooss and his collaborator, Jewish composer Fritz Cohen, had an affinity for art that addressed moral issues, and they abhorred plotless dances. With fascism on the rise in Germany, they worked together to create a ballet with a strong anti-war statement. To this day, it remains one
of the most powerful ballets in the compendium of dance.
The Green Table opens with diplomats in grotesque masks, arguing. When negotiations fail, guns are pulled and shots fired. The next six scenes portray the horrors of war, with the character of Death consuming everything the stage presents, from patriotic soldiers wanting to serve, to their weeping mothers, as well as fleeing refugees. The piece ends as it began, with the “Gentlemen in Black” around the green table, indifferent to the ravages of war. The ballet uses classical ballet and a technique Jooss called “Essentialism,” which tries to capture the essence of each movement or pose.
On July 3, 1932, Jooss presented The Green Table at a Choreographic Festival in Paris. He danced the role of Death

himself. The originality of the piece won him first prize and marked an important step in his career. On the very same day as the competition, 12,000 Nazis paraded in Munich, Germany, marching for upcoming elections.
Shortly after Adolf Hitler was elected Chancellor on January 30, 1933, the Nazis came to Jooss and asked him to dismiss his Jewish company members. He refused, and was forced to flee Germany with Cohen and other members of his Company. They took refuge in the Netherlands before escaping to England. After the war, Jooss returned to Germany and continued teaching and doing choreography, but The Green Table remains his perennial work. The New Yorker recently called the piece, “the world’s most famous antiwar ballet.” And The New York Times still calls it an “indisputable masterpiece.”

KURT JOOSS
Choreographer, The Green Table
Kurt Jooss was born in Wasseralfingen in Southern Germany. In 1920, while studying piano, voice, and drama at the Stuttgart Conservatory, Jooss met Rudolf von Laban and became his student, then leading dancer, and later assistant. Jooss received his first appointment as “movement regisseur” at the Municpal Theatre in Münster, where together with his colleagues, Aino Siimola (who later became his wife), Sigurd Leeder, F.A. Cohen, and Hein Heckroth he formed his first company – Die Neue Tanzbühne. During the same period, Jooss and Leeder toured with their program Two Male Dancers and also travelled to Paris and Vienna to study classical ballet. In 1927, Jooss moved to Essen, he was co-founder of the Folkwangschule (an Academy for Performing Arts) and director of the Dance Division. He also re-formed his company which subsequently became the resident company at the Essen Opera House. With this company, the Folkwang Tanzbühne, he won the first prize for The Green Table at the International Competition of Choreography in Paris in 1932. Jooss was forced to leave Germany for political reasons in 1933. The entire company emigrated with him and found a new home at Dartington Hall in England, where the Jooss-Leeder School of Dance was also founded in 1934. Between 1932 and 1947, the now internationally famous Ballets Jooss toured worldwide. In 1949, Jooss returned to Germany as a British citizen to help rebuild the Folkwangschule and to form a new company. Until his retirement in 1968, Jooss worked as director, choreographer, and teacher. He finally agreed to stage his works for outside companies in 1964; these now continue to be in great demand in the international dance repertoire.

HEIN HECKROTH Costume Design, The Green Table
Born in Hesse in 1901, Heckroth soon left his native town for nearby Frankfurt to become an art student. By the early nineteen-twenties he was designing sets and costumes for the German national ballet. He then began an association with the Kurt Jooss dance company for whom he would design a number of ballets over the next two decades, including the award-winning The Green Table. He later moved to England where he designed for films such as The Red Shoes and Matter of Life and Death.
This experience was a key factor in his promotion at the Archers, his first film as production designer with them being the ballet movie The Red Shoes. In the nineteen thirties Heckroth refused a desirable teaching position in Dresden because the authorities imposed the condition that he would have to leave his Jewish wife, the artist Ada Maier, if he wanted the job. Blacklisted by the Nazis he and Ada fled to Holland and then France and finally to England in 1935.
