About Ballet West From Balanchine to Bournonville, and Petipa to Tharp, Ballet West boasts a rich and varied repertoire, elegant and versatile artists, and an American style and legacy that is as dynamic, expansive, and unexpected as the Rocky Mountain region it represents. Ballet West has toured the world several times over, presenting the very best in American classical ballet.

willam christensen

Ballet West was established in Salt Lake City in 1963. Willam F. Christensen was the company’s first artistic director, co-founding the company together with Utah’s “First Lady of the Arts,” Glenn Walker Wallace. In 1951, Christensen had established the first ballet department in an American university at The University of Utah, and with the tireless assistance of Mrs. Enid Cosgriff, this program grew into the Utah Civic Ballet, Ballet West’s first incarnation. But this was not the first ballet company Willam Christensen founded. Along with his brothers, Lew and Harold, Christensen made history by establishing the oldest ballet company in the western United States, the San Francisco Ballet. There, he went on to create the first full-length American productions of Coppélia, Swan Lake, and his evergreen production of The Nutcracker, which remains in Ballet West’s repertoire to this day. With 38 company members, 16 second company members, and a thriving academy that trains dancers of all ages, many of whom have gone on to professional careers with Ballet West and companies around the world, Ballet West ranks among the top professional ballet companies in America. Since its inception, the Company has had five artistic directors—its founder Willam Christensen, Bruce Marks, John Hart, Jonas Kage, and currently Adam Sklute, each of whom has helped to build Ballet West’s unique and expansive profile. For more than 50 years, Willam Christensen and Ballet West have developed and influenced innumerable great artists in the ballet world. Some notable figures include Bart Cook, Finis Jhung, Jay Jolley, Victoria Morgan, Tomm Ruud, Michael Smuin, Richard Tanner, and Kent Stowell. With an eclectic and ever expanding outlook, Ballet West is truly an American pioneer in the world of dance.

From the Artistic Director Welcome to Ballet West’s Fall 2020 program. Since March of this year, Ballet West has not performed live, so it is with great joy that we return to the stage, albeit in a unique performance that both addresses the challenges of our current world but also affirms the power of the human spirit. In March, our artists stopped dancing. Our studios closed down and as the year progressed and we were forced to cancel one program after another, we began to wonder if we would ever get back onto the stage. However, we were determined as an organization to push forward and find the safest ways to create art in the face of this global pandemic, despite the enormous financial hardship and uncertainty of the future. In late June, bucking national trends, our Academy held the only large scale in-person Ballet Summer Intensive in America. Our faculty and staff worked tirelessly in coordination with the Salt Lake County Health Department and created rigorous protocols and safety measures, which we continue to follow to this day. It was complicated, difficult, and required intense focus and attention to details from the entire organization. But we were able to host over 300 students, and guest faculty from around the United States and not one single illness! Our work over the summer gave us courage and while our academy continues in-person classes for our hundreds of students dancing in masks, while maintaining proper social distancing and hygiene, our next step was to bring our professionals back to work. By August we began the slow and careful process of “rehabilitation” classes. Dancers are such hard workers and while they did everything they could to stay in shape, there is no substitute for proper full-scale ballet training in a dance studio. Slowly we worked all together to build back their strength, flexibility, and articulation. Little by little increasing their speed and agility as they began to streamline again and regain their confidence we now turned our eyes to performing. Clearly our planned October blockbuster Dracula would simply not be possible with its huge cast and orchestra in the pit, its complicated production values and its promise of a packed audience. This was not the time for such an undertaking. Nevertheless, our newly planned “additional” fall program Nine Sinatra Songs presented a possible way back to the stage.

We are blessed at Ballet West to have many household couples among the dancers. I realized that by utilizing our married and cohabitating couples I could produce works that incorporated physical partnering and close contact between pairs – a vital aspect of our art form. Using Nine Sinatra Songs, an elegant suite of dances for seven couples, as the lynchpin and by adjusting the other two originally scheduled works, a whole show took shape. The program opens with Jennifer Archibald’s dynamic Tides. A graduate of The Ailey School, and a celebrated international choreographer, Archibald’s approach to classical ballet is not delicate. Instead, she brings out power and fierceness from the artists. And by combining genres, her movement has a fascinating quality at once unpredictable and inevitable. Ballet West audiences first experienced Archibald’s work as danced by the Cincinnati Ballet when we hosted them as part of our 2018 Choreographic Festival. I immediately invited her to create a new work on Ballet West, originally scheduled for our May 2020 Festival. I am so glad she was able to accommodate our changes. Tides, speaks to the ever changing eb and flow of this complicated time and our determination and strength in the face of adversity. Similarly, our Resident Choreographer, Nicolo Fonte’s Faraway Close is a beautiful dreamlike look at the human soul during this strange period in the world. Originally, I had planned the revival of Fonte’s excellent Almost Tango, but in speaking with him, it proved to be impossible right now. Instead, Fonte came forward with a new creation that speaks to the dichotomy of our current lives. Both Jennifer and Nicolo embraced the unique challenge, along with our dancers, of creating ballet while maintaining social distance, wearing masks, and only allowing physical partnering between life couples. Closing the program is Ballet West’s revival of Twyla Tharp’s iconic celebration of relationships as presented to the music of “Old Blue-Eyes” and through the medium of ballroom dancing. Nine Sinatra Songs is glamorous, charming, ironic, sly, and ultimately quite moving as Sinatra’s great anthem “My Way” closes the performance, reaffirming the indomitability of the human spirit. We are committed to assuring your health, safety, and comfort for these performances and we hope that we can offer joy to your lives and food for the soul. Now more than ever, thank you for your patronage and commitment to Ballet West. Stay safe, healthy, happy, and strong! With gratitude,

Adam Sklute Artistic Director Ballet West Since 2007, Adam Sklute has expanded Ballet West’s outlook, repertoire, and visibility with exciting Company and world premieres, increased touring, heightened public exposure, and greater focus on the Ballet West Academy. He began his career with The Joffrey Ballet, rising through the ranks from dancer to Associate Director. His stewardship of Ballet West has been marked by both financial growth and elevated artistry, and was the subject of The CW Network’s docu-drama, Breaking Pointe, which aired for two seasons. From September 2016 to October 2017, Sklute took on the dual position of CEO and Artistic Director overseeing both administrative and artistic operations of Ballet West. An internationally sought after teacher and adjudicator, Sklute has received numerous awards, including Utah’s Enlightened 50 (2014), The Bronze Minuteman Award for Outstanding Service to Utah and The Nation (2015), and most recently Utah Diversity Connection’s Business Award for outstanding commitment to diversity initiatives.

From the Executive Director I am writing this letter to you on the anniversary of my third year at Ballet West. In all honesty, these past eight months have been trying, as I am sure all of you would agree. We have all felt the pressure of these unprecedented times. As Ballet West emerges to present on stage, in front of an audience, with stringent safety protocols, I am feeling proud. Although many performing arts companies made the heartbreaking decision to close their doors, we chose a different course. With more than 100 employees who depend on Ballet West for income, Adam and I, with the full support of our Board, agreed we must at least try to return to the studios and get back to work, always with safety in mind. The Frederick Quinney Lawson Ballet West Academy employs instructors at four campuses who train more than 1,000 aspiring ballet dancers. For our organization, the idea of closing did not feel right. And, perhaps the most important reason to stay open is for you! For our patrons who adore Ballet West, who come to the theater to escape and be lifted up. Thank you for returning to the theater with us, I hope you take joy and comfort in being together again. Even as we are physically distanced. I would be remiss on this anniversary not to thank you for the hospitality you have shown me. From the day I arrived, our Board of Directors, donors, and this community have been incredibly gracious. The dedicated individuals who bring you performances, both on stage and behind the scenes, have also made my tenure here rewarding during good times, and yes, when we are challenged as we are today. I have felt your love for this company. In turn, I too have fallen in love with it, as well as this city and its people. Sincerely,

Michael Scolamiero Executive Director Michael Scolamiero joined Ballet West in 2017 after an extensive international search led by Michael Kaiser, President Emeritus of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Mr. Scolamiero previously served as Executive Director of Miami City Ballet for three years, during which time the organization achieved a significant reduction in debt, as well as robust growth in ticket revenue, contributions, and touring income. Prior to Miami City Ballet, Mr. Scolamiero was Pennsylvania Ballet’s Executive Director for 17 years, the longest tenure in the Company’s history and among the longest of any leader of a major ballet company. During his tenure, Mr. Scolamiero led the organization’s first capital campaign that raised $11.9 million (against a $10 million goal) to build an endowment and fund repertoire expansion. At Ballet West, Mr. Scolamiero is set to implement a newly completed strategic plan and excited to guide a growing and robust Company.

We still have to stay faraway from each other but we remain close in soul and spirit. The outcome of the future seems so far away and yet we are so close. Everything so out of reach and yet upfront and real. “Faraway Close” comes from a desire to breathe, move and share with all of you, through the power and beauty of dance, the resilience and limitless potential of the human spirit to rise above adversity and fulfill its mission to unlock the gates of the soul and seek its divine essence. - Nicolo Fonte

Profiles NICOLO FONTE

Choreographer, Faraway Close Choreographer Nicolo Fonte has created over 50 new works for dance companies spanning the globe, garnering praise and generating excitement for his daring and theatrical approach to dance. In Hidden Seconds, one of three ballets Fonte created for Nacho Duato’s Compañia Nacional de Danza, while he was still a dancer with the company, was hailed as a breakthrough work of great impact with the poetic vision of a mature artist. Since then, companies such as The Australian Ballet, Pennsylvania Ballet, and The Dutch National Ballet, among many others, all have works of his in their repertoire. Whether made to Ravel’s brash Bolero or the quiet intricacy of a Bach violin piece, Fonte ballets have common ground: “The choreography is inventive, creating expressive original shapes built on an undercurrent of implicit human relationships” (Foyer/ Dance Europe). “What impresses the most is that his choreography is obviously the result of a personal reflexion - distinctly and unmistakably Fonte, proof of a rare quality” (Michel Odin/Danse). Well-known to Salt Lake City audiences for a stunning roster of works including Bolero, Presto, Fox on the Doorstep, The Rite of Spring and Carmina Burana, Fonte is recognized throughout the world as a choreographer equally comfortable with classical and contemporary dance forms. Mr. Fonte has been the Resident Choreographer for Ballet West since the 2012/2013 season. He also became Resident Choreographer at Oregon Ballet Theatre beginning with the 2016/2017 season.

She is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Philosophical Society, and an Honorary Member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters. In 1965, Ms. Tharp founded her dance company, Twyla Tharp Dance. Her dances are known for creativity, wit and technical precision coupled with a streetwise nonchalance. By combining different forms of movement – such as jazz, ballet, boxing and inventions of her own making – Ms. Tharp’s work expands the boundaries of ballet and modern dance. In addition to choreographing for her own company, she has created dances for The Joffrey Ballet, American Ballet 28
