About Ballet West From Balanchine to Bournonville, and Petipa to Tharp, Ballet West boasts a rich and varied repertoire, elegant and versatile artists, and an American style and legacy that is as dynamic, expansive, and unexpected as the Rocky Mountain region it represents. Ballet West has toured the world several times over, presenting the very best in American classical ballet. Ballet West was established in Salt Lake City in 1963. Willam F. Christensen was the company’s first artistic director, co-founding the company together with Utah’s “First Lady of the Arts,” Glenn Walker Wallace. In 1951, Christensen had established the first ballet department in an American university at The University of Utah, and with the tireless assistance of Mrs. Enid Cosgriff, this program grew into the Utah Civic Ballet, Ballet West’s first incarnation. But this was not the first ballet company Willam Christensen founded. Along with his brothers, Lew and Harold, Christensen made history by establishing the oldest ballet company in the western United States, the San Francisco Ballet. There, he went on to create the first full-length American productions of Coppélia, Swan Lake, and his evergreen production of The Nutcracker, which remains in Ballet West’s repertoire to this day. With 42 company members, 14 second company members, and a thriving academy that trains dancers of all ages, many of whom have gone on to professional careers with Ballet West and companies around the world, Ballet West ranks among the top professional ballet companies in America. Since its inception, the Company has had five artistic directors – its founder Willam Christensen, Bruce Marks, John Hart, Jonas Kage, and currently Adam Sklute, each of whom has helped to build Ballet West’s unique and expansive profile. For more than 50 years, Willam Christensen and Ballet West have developed and influenced innumerable great artists in the ballet world. Some notable figures include Bart Cook, Finis Jhung, Jay Jolley, Victoria Morgan, Tomm Ruud, Michael Smuin, Richard Tanner, and Kent Stowell. With an eclectic and ever expanding outlook, Ballet West is truly an American pioneer in the world of dance.

From the Artistic Director Welcome to Ballet West’s 63rd annual production of Willam Christensen’s The Nutcracker! “Mr. C” originally created this Nutcracker in 1944 for his San Francisco Ballet and then brought it to Utah in 1955. It remains the oldest and longest running full American production of this holiday classic. Filled with charm, verve, humor, and pure beauty, The Nutcracker has all the stuff of great theater. No matter how many performances I watch, I never get tired of it. It is perfect for ballet aficionados, children, and newcomers alike. Last season, we unveiled all new sets and costumes as well as additional special effects, some Mr. C had always wanted. It is interesting to note that throughout his lifetime, Mr. C changed his sets and costumes four times. Ballet West had been presenting the previous version since the late 1980’s. As glorious as it was, after approximately thirty years, it was time for another change. Envisioning the changes, my goal was to honor and respect Mr. C’s own vision and choreography while creating a fresh look to this evergreen classic. I look at it as if we are reframing a beloved piece of art or photograph. A whole generation grew up on our last production. Now a whole new generation can grow up on this one. Over the last several years, we have continued to put eight different casts of principals and soloists on the stage! The scope of talent in our beautiful Ballet West is that deep. By rotating casts, it allows many of our artists the opportunity to take on challenging roles they might not get to in other ballets. It also allows our audiences to see a wide variety of great performers any time they come to the theater. So, if you enjoyed this performance of The Nutcracker, perhaps you will consider coming back for another show with more of your favorite artists. This year, we were invited back to Washington, D.C. to present Mr. C’s The Nutcracker at The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts for the third time in ten years–running December 5 through the 9. What an honor it was for Ballet West to represent the arts in Utah at our nation’s capital. From Salt Lake City to Washington DC; New York to Scotland; China to Texas; Victoria BC to Minnesota; and many more, Ballet West is committed to being cultural ambassadors for Utah, the nation, and the world.
20
From the Artistic Director We hope you enjoy Mr. C’s The Nutcracker, we perform it with honor and great pride! Thank you for your patronage. May God bless you, one and all!
Adam Sklute, Artistic Director Since 2007, Adam Sklute has expanded Ballet West’s outlook, repertoire, and visibility with exciting Company and world premieres, increased touring, heightened public exposure, and greater focus on the Ballet West Academy. He began his career with The Joffrey Ballet, rising through the ranks from dancer to Associate Director. His stewardship of Ballet West has been marked by both financial growth and elevated artistry, and was the subject of The CW Network’s docu-drama, Breaking Pointe, which aired for two seasons. From September 2016 to October 2017, Sklute took on the dual position of CEO and Artistic Director overseeing both administrative and artistic operations of Ballet West. An internationally sought after teacher and adjudicator, Sklute has received numerous awards, including Utah’s Enlightened 50 (2014), The Bronze Minuteman Award for Outstanding Service to Utah and The Nation (2015), and most recently Utah Diversity Connection’s Business Award for outstanding commitment to diversity initiatives.

From the Executive Director It is my pleasure to welcome you to Willam Christensen’s The Nutcracker! In an era when some television shows last for just a few episodes and movies are lucky to have a couple weeks in the theater, Ballet West’s The Nutcracker is a nothing short of a phenomenon. Ours is the longest running Nutcracker in the United States—possibly the world, and it continues to break attendance and box office records. It is universally loved, and I think I know why. Nothing speaks to the magic and spirit of the holiday season more than The Nutcracker. It is joyous and whimsical for all ages. In a time of ‘condensed’ attention spans, this artistic masterpiece takes us on a delightful journey and allows us to dream and escape the realities of the world in which we live. Since I have been honored to lead ballet companies most of my career, The Nutcracker has been an annual part of my life. And yes, I actually look forward to it more and more. Part of the reason is the marvelous talent on the Ballet West stage that Artistic Director Adam Sklute has cultivated. Another reason is Mr. C’s great choreographic storytelling that is full of excitement, beauty, and drama. I may not be completely objective but you don’t have to take my word for it! The New York Times dance critic, Alastair Macaulay, called it one of the best he has ever watched. As you may suspect, The Nutcracker greatly contributes to the overall success of our company. It brings audience members and accolades from around the world. It allows us to produce inventive and daring new works so that we may further explore and expand this art form. Productions like John Cranko’s Onegin in April, a Ballet West premiere, and the Choreographic Festival in May that will feature several world premieres that would not be possible without the support of The Nutcracker as well as the help from foundations, sponsors, and the POPS and ZAP programs. Yes, ballet is an expensive art form to produce, but with the help from wonderful supporters, and the sheer volume of revenue generated by The Nutcracker, we are able to keep ticket prices low and offer tickets for every production starting at just $24, making ballet accessible to all. I am grateful to our entire community for your support that makes Ballet West a vital part of Utah’s cultural fabric. Finally, I would like to give my thanks to the dancers, administrators, musicians, crew, and all the children’s cast
22
From the Executive Director (and their families), who give 100 percent this time of year to stage this incredible production. It takes an army, and I cannot thank them enough for their commitment and talent. From our family to yours, we wish you a safe and joyful holiday season!
Michael Scolamiero Executive Director Michael Scolamiero joined Ballet West in 2017 after an extensive international search led by Michael Kaiser, President Emeritus of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Mr. Scolamiero previously served as Executive Director of Miami City Ballet for three years, during which time the organization achieved a significant reduction in debt, as well as robust growth in ticket revenue, contributions, and touring income. Prior to Miami City Ballet, Mr. Scolamiero was Pennsylvania Ballet’s Executive Director for 17 years, the longest tenure in the Company’s history and among the longest of any leader of a major ballet company. During his tenure, Mr. Scolamiero led the organization’s first capital campaign that raised $11.9 million (against a $10 million goal) to build an endowment and fund repertoire expansion. At Ballet West, Mr. Scolamiero is set to implement a newly completed strategic plan and excited to guide a growing and robust Company.

The Story THE NUTCRACKER begins at the Stahlbaum home on Christmas Eve. Mr. and Mrs. Stahlbaum and their children, Clara and Fritz, are busy preparing for the evening festivities. The guests arrive, including Clara’s Godfather, Dr. Drosselmeyer. Dr. Drosselmeyer has fashioned a special gift for Clara, a Nutcracker designed in the form of a small soldier. Clara falls in love with her Nutcracker at once. That night, Clara is unable to sleep without one more look at her beloved Nutcracker. She tiptoes back into the living room and cradles it once more before falling asleep. She is not sure if she is dreaming or not, but before her eyes are huge mice playing in front of the Christmas tree that has grown to a tremendous size. The Nutcracker fights with the Mouse King and, in the heat of the battle, Clara takes off her slipper and throws it at the Mouse King. While he is distracted, the Nutcracker stabs him with his saber. After the battle, the Nutcracker is magically transformed into a handsome prince and, grateful to Clara for saving his life, invites her to accompany him on a journey to the fabled Kingdom of the Sugar Plum Fairy. En route, they pass through the exquisite land of the Snow Queen and King. Act II begins in the land of the Sugar Plum Fairy, where Clara is entertained by an array of divertissements, including Spanish, Arabian and Chinese dancers, as well as Mother Buffoon, with her many children who appear from under her gigantic skirt. The evening concludes with the grand pas de deux performed by the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Cavalier. Following the pas de deux, Clara is whisked away with her prince in a sleigh, while waving goodbye to the Sugar Plum Fairy and her magical kingdom.

Choreographer Willam F. Christensen Choreographer, The Nutcracker
Recognized as one of the leading pioneers in American dance, Willam Christensen, known affectionately as “Mr. C,” played a key role in the artistic contributions to Utah and to the United States. Along with brothers Lew and Harold, Willam began his career with dance lessons from his uncle at the Christensen Academy in Brigham City, Utah. Together the brothers went on to a professional career in vaudeville, and then in 1937, established the oldest ballet company in the United States, the San Francisco Ballet. While with the San Francisco Ballet, Mr. C choreographed the first full-length version of The Nutcracker ballet ever performed in the United States. Christensen moved his family to Utah to nurse his wife’s ill health. In 1951, he founded the first ballet department at an American university, the University of Utah. Shortly thereafter, in 1953, he formed the University Ballet Theatre, the first ballet company ever incorporated into a university. Mr. C’s contributions to dance also include producing the first full-length version of Coppélia ever to be mounted by an American choreographer and producing the first full-length Swan Lake in the United States. In addition, Mr. C produced the first American Cinderella and his version of Stravinsky’s The Firebird. In 1963, Willam Christensen, in conjuction with Glenn Walker Wallace, founded Ballet West under the name Utah Civic Ballet. Willam served as Artistic Director for Ballet West, and, under his direction, Ballet West has grown to become one of America’s leading ballet companies. After retiring as Artistic Director in 1978, Mr. C founded the Christensen Academy and continued teaching well into his 90’s. He served as special artistic advisor of Ballet West’s annual performances of The Nutcracker up until the time of his death, October 14, 2001. Reporting of his death at the age of 99, the San Francisco Chronicle called him, “the grandfather of American ballet.”

Composer Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky Composer, The Nutcracker
Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840-1893) studied at the Conservatory in St. Petersburg, where George Balanchine later studied piano in addition to his studies in dance. Tchaikovsky is one of the most popular and influential of all romantic composers. His work is expressive, melodic and grand in scale, with rich orchestrations. His output was prodigious and included chamber works, symphonies, and concerti for various instruments, operas and works for the piano. His creations for the ballet, composed in close partnership with Marius Petipa, include Swan Lake, The Nutcracker, and The Sleeping Beauty.

Magical Moments of
The Nutcracker 70
by josh jones
Last year, Willam Christensen’s iconic Nutcracker debuted after a 2-year, $3-million renovation with grand, colorful new sets, polished props, sparkling costumes, along with whimsical special effects. The longestrunning Nutcracker in the world, Ballet West was thrilled to present this updated production with Willam Christensen’s historic choreography and Tchaikovsky’s beloved score. SCOPE OF RENOVATION ee Ballet West collaborated with Utahbased set designer John Wayne Cook and London-based Dick and Belinda Bird to create a magical world. The Utah Opera Studios took their designs to paint 24 monolithic drops that transport audiences into Clara’s dreamy world. ee Ballet West Director of Costume Production, David Heuvel and his team of stitchers, milliners, drapers, mask makers, and pattern cutters spent 15 months bringing his designs to life. There were more than 180 costumes created. Each tutu is hand-sewn with 16-yards of tulle and then adorned with 806 Swarovski crystals. With more than 40-hours of work in every tutu, Heuvel estimates they are worth $8,000 each. ee More than 200 props were recreated, including the Nutcracker himself. Using cutting-edge technology, a doll was molded in clay, then laser-scanned. Using computer models, the doll was
engineered into several pieces so that the mouth could move and magnet installed so the head could be removed (true to the original choreography.) Then, the design became reality using 3-D printing. Finally, a scenic painter spent two weeks painting the three dolls. ee The grandfather clock is the only prop that remains from the original production. Dr. Merrill Lessley, who originally carved it for Mr. C helped Ballet West restore it. ee Robert Allsopp & Associates has created some of the most recognizable costumes and masks for the film industry. From the helmet used by X-Mens’ Magneto, to the armor that Russell Crowe wears in Gladiator, his work is iconic. The London-based company has worked with Ballet West in the past and returned to produce masks for the monkeys, the bear, ten mice, mouse king, mouse prince, and two baby mice. ee The production takes flight (literally) thanks to Flying by Foy. The Las Vegas-based company works with Broadway, Cirque du Soleil, and Taylor Swift to get productions “off the ground.” The company designed a new sleigh and flight path that takes Clara and her Prince into the stars. This truly magical ending was a long-held dream for Mr. C, and one Ballet West is proud to finally incorporate.
