About Ballet West From Balanchine to Bournonville, Petipa to Tharp, Ballet West boasts a rich and varied repertoire, elegant and versatile artists, and an American style and legacy that is as dynamic, expansive, and as unexpected as the Rocky Mountain region it represents. From its humble beginnings in 1963 as the only professional ballet company between Chicago and the West Coast, Ballet West has grown into one of America’s leading ballet companies. For 60 years, the Salt Lake City-based Company has entertained and excited audiences in Utah and worldwide by presenting the great classical story ballets, including America’s first and longest-running version of The Nutcracker, revivals of rarelyseen historical masterpieces, works by some of the world’s most renowned artists, and new cutting-edge creations by emerging choreographers. The Company also regularly tours both nationally and internationally.

willam christensen, founder of ballet west

Ballet West was established in Salt Lake City by co-founders Willam F. Christensen, often called the “Godfather of American ballet,” and Utah’s “First Lady of the Arts,” Glenn Walker Wallace. In 1951, Christensen established the first ballet department in an American university at The University of Utah. Over time, this program grew into the Utah Civic Ballet, Ballet West’s first incarnation. Prior to that, along with his brothers, Lew and Harold, Christensen made history by establishing the oldest full-ballet company in the western United States, the San Francisco Ballet. Since its inception, Ballet West has had five artistic directors, who have each helped build the Company’s unique and expansive profile – its founder, Willam Christensen, Bruce Marks, John Hart CBE, Jonas Kåge, and for the past 16 years, Adam Sklute, who has overseen the artistic product for the longest sustained growth of the Company since its founding. Ballet West continues to grow and evolve with 38 company members, 14 second company members, a thriving Academy, and one of the world’s largest ballet-based Education and Outreach programs, reaching over 100,000 children and adults throughout Utah and the Intermountain Region every year. The Frederick Quinney Lawson Ballet West (BW) Academy builds future ballet and dance artists and audiences by providing training in classical ballet, flamenco, character, contemporary, hip-hop, and theatrical dance training. The BW Academy has over 1,000 students between its four campuses, Salt Lake City, Trolley Corners, Park City, and Utah County. With newlyrenovated student housing, the BW Academy is home to local, national, and international ballet students, with more than 50% of BW Academy students joining Ballet West.

From the Artistic Director Welcome to Willam Christensen’s The Nutcracker. On Christmas Eve in 1944, Ballet West’s founder, “Mr. C,” presented the first full-length American production of this holiday treat in San Francisco, thus beginning a national tradition. After moving back to Utah in 1954, he premiered it with his newly formed Utah Civic Ballet, the predecessor to Ballet West, and it has been presented every holiday season since (with the exception of 2020, when the production was televised), making it the longest running Nutcracker in America and perhaps the world. The Nutcracker premiered in 1892 in St. Petersburg, Russia, featuring a score by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky with choreography by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov. Petipa wrote the libretto himself, which he based on the Alexandre Dumas adaptation of E.T.A. Hoffmann’s story, The Nutcracker and the Mouse King. Only two hours long with one intermission, it was considered a short ballet and served as an opening “act” for Tchaikovsky’s opera Iolanthe. Ironically, as beloved as The Nutcracker has become, critics at the time considered Petipa’s plot to be an over-simplistic rethinking of the cumbersome Hoffmann/Dumas story. Additionally, they did not appreciate the extensive use of children in the leading roles and were bothered by the fact that the principal ballerinas had only short opportunities to dance. It probably didn’t help that the first performances in 1892 were presented in July, an odd choice for a ballet with a Christmas theme. Tchaikovsky’s score also received mixed reviews initially, but when it was rearranged and shortened to become The Nutcracker Suite, its infinitely hummable music found its way into the hearts of many. It is interesting that now, the extensive use of children and the multiple roles for dancers are the very things that help this work remain so endearing and enduring." Like many of you, my first ballet was The Nutcracker. Growing up in the San Francisco Bay area, the first version I saw was Lew Christensen’s (Mr. C’s younger brother who took over running San Francisco Ballet after Mr. C moved back to Utah). Lew’s version had many similarities to his brother’s, and from what I have been told, they would often share choreographic ideas between them. Every year, seeing The Nutcracker would fill me with wonder and joy. I got to know it so well that I waited breathlessly for each section—whether it was the doll and the bear in scene one, the growing tree, the fierce battle with the mice, or the exotic array of dances in act two. Viewing each new scene was almost like opening presents or unpacking beloved ornaments that hadn’t been seen for a year. The Christensen brothers understood this magic, as did George Balanchine, who unveiled his iconic version in 1954. Now, if we travel around the country and world, there are many great and unique takes on The Nutcracker that have become centerpieces of their individual communities' holiday season.

BALLET WEST

From the Artistic Director The Nutcracker has truly become an annual tradition, and for many, the holidays wouldn’t be complete without it. This is a gift that largely started in the United States and, in so many ways, is thanks to our founding Artistic Director – Mr. C. This is also a gift to ballet companies worldwide. Not only does it bring in large audiences, it allows us to offer multiple opportunities for many different artists at different levels of the company. That is what makes this ballet vital in helping to foster growth and artistic development throughout our ranks. For all these reasons and simply because of its overwhelming joy and beauty, I never grow tired of this fanciful ballet, which brings so much happiness to so many. Thank you for your patronage,

Adam Sklute

Since 2007, Adam Sklute has expanded Ballet West’s outlook, repertoire, and visibility with exciting Company and world premieres, increased touring, heightened public exposure, and greater focus on the Ballet West Academy. He began his career with The Joffrey Ballet, rising through the ranks from dancer to Associate Director. His stewardship of Ballet West has been marked by both financial growth and elevated artistry, and was the subject of The CW Network’s docu-drama, Breaking Pointe, which aired for two seasons. From September 2016 to October 2017, Sklute took on the dual position of CEO and Artistic Director, overseeing both administrative and artistic operations of Ballet West. An internationally sought-after teacher and adjudicator, Sklute has received numerous awards, including Utah’s Enlightened 50 (2014), The Bronze Minuteman Award for Outstanding Service to Utah and The Nation (2015), and Utah Diversity Connection’s Business Award for outstanding commitment to diversity initiatives. Most recently, Sklute was included in Deseret Magazine’s 25 Changemakers of the West for his efforts to build greater equity and inclusion in classical ballet.

23–24 SEASON

19

From the Executive Director December brings with it no shortage of Nutcrackers performed by ballet and dance companies throughout the country and the world. Many have endured for generations, while many others are new takes on the E.T.A. Hoffman story that bring a local connection to the story. We are particularly proud of the place The Nutcracker holds at our Company since our version, choreographed by Willam Christensen for San Francisco Ballet in 1944, is the first full version of the ballet created in America. No other version has endured for so many years, which speaks to the genius of Mr. C’s production that celebrates the holidays through the eyes of children and their dreams. Some 79 years after its first performance, Mr. C’s The Nutcracker remains beloved by audiences here in Utah and on tour, with more than 40,000 people attending our performances last season in Salt Lake City and Ogden. I am often asked if the artists lose interest in this ballet with its rigorous schedule and the demands associated with 30 or more performances annually. In truth, the artists actually enjoy the opportunity to dance different roles, often learning new solos and being featured differently from season to season. Furthermore, it is exhilarating for them to share their art with so many children, whose enthusiasm and love of the ballet is palpable from the moment the curtain is raised. For Ballet West, we certainly appreciate the many thousands of ticket buyers who return year after year. Yet The Nutcracker can also be an introduction to ballet for many more thousands as well, providing Ballet West with the opportunity to develop new generations of dance patrons. With audiences attending our productions in record numbers, it is no surprise that Utahns love their Nutcracker as much, if not more, 79 years after its premiere. The production you see this evening was made possible thanks to the incredible generosity of the George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Foundation, which provided a lead gift to underwrite new sets, costumes, and props, as well as gifts from hundreds of other donors. The resources required to present weeks of performances are considerable, and Ballet West is proud to recognize the dedication and passion of our artists, musicians, production staff, and administrative employees whose collective efforts ensure that every performance runs smoothly.

20

BALLET WEST

From the Executive Director In today’s turbulent world, productions such as The Nutcracker provide an escape for all of us to experience the joy and warmth of the holidays among family and friends. The Ballet West family wishes all of you the very best this holiday season, and we are deeply grateful for your continued support and love for our beloved company for more than half a century.

Michael Scolamiero Executive Director Michael Scolamiero joined Ballet West after an extensive international search led by Michael Kaiser, President Emeritus of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Mr. Scolamiero previously served as Executive Director of Miami City Ballet for three years, during which time the organization achieved a significant reduction in debt, as well as robust growth in ticket revenue, contributions, and touring income. Prior to Miami City Ballet, Mr. Scolamiero was Pennsylvania Ballet’s Executive Director for 17 years, the longest tenure in the Company’s history and among the longest of any leader of a major ballet company. During his tenure, Mr. Scolamiero led the organization’s first capital campaign, which raised $11.9 million (against a $10 million goal) to build an endowment and fund repertoire expansion. At Ballet West, Mr. Scolamiero has played a key role in transforming the organization’s financial health. No longer using external financing to meet cash needs, Ballet West’s balance sheet is strong after realizing operating surpluses for three consecutive fiscal years. Mr. Scolamiero is currently working with the Board and management on a new strategic plan that will serve as a blueprint for Ballet West’s aspirations as the organization enters its 60th season and beyond.

In Memory

For all we know, Merlin Taylor was the real Santa. For many years before he passed away recently, he volunteered as Santa during The Nutcracker special needs performances. Then he would rush from the stage to the lobby and greet every single child as they left Capitol Theatre. Kids swarmed him with wide eyes and wonder. He would stay until every child got a hug and a candy cane. Merlin then toured homeless shelters and senior centers. He was one of the most giving and thoughtful people and left a legacy of kindness that will endure in the hearts of all whom he came into contact with. 23–24 SEASON

BALLET WEST

The Story THE NUTCRACKER begins at the Stahlbaum home on Christmas Eve. Mr. and Mrs. Stahlbaum and their children, Clara and Fritz, are busy preparing for the evening festivities. The guests arrive, including Clara’s godfather, Dr. Drosselmeyer. Dr. Drosselmeyer has fashioned a special gift for Clara—a Nutcracker designed in the form of a small soldier. Clara falls in love with her Nutcracker at once. That night, Clara is unable to sleep without one more look at her beloved Nutcracker. She tiptoes back into the living room and cradles it once more before falling asleep. She is not sure whether she is dreaming, but before her eyes are huge mice playing in front of the Christmas tree that has grown to a tremendous size. The Nutcracker fights with the Mouse King and, in the heat of the battle, Clara takes off her slipper and throws it at the Mouse King. While he is distracted, the Nutcracker stabs him with his saber. After the battle, the Nutcracker is magically transformed into a handsome prince and, grateful to Clara for saving his life, invites her to accompany him on a journey to the fabled Kingdom of the Sugar Plum Fairy. En route, they pass through the exquisite land of the Snow Queen and King. Act II begins in the land of the Sugar Plum Fairy, where Clara is celebrated by dances from around the world, as well as the beloved Mother Buffoon with her many children who appear from under her gigantic skirt. Finally, Clara is whisked away with her prince in a sleigh, waving goodbye to the Sugar Plum Fairy and her international magical kingdom.

Profiles Willam F. Christensen Choreographer, The Nutcracker

Recognized as one of the leading pioneers in American dance, Willam Christensen, known affectionately as “Mr. C,” played a key role in the artistic contributions to Utah and to the United States. Along with brothers Lew and Harold, Willam began his career with dance lessons from his uncle at the Christensen Academy in Brigham City, Utah. Together, the brothers went on to a professional career in Vaudeville, and then in 1937, established the oldest ballet company in the United States, the San Francisco Ballet. While with the San Francisco Ballet, Mr. C choreographed the first full-length version of The Nutcracker ever performed in the United States. Christensen moved his family to Utah to nurse his wife’s ill health. In 1951, he founded the first ballet department at an American university, the University of Utah. Shortly thereafter, in 1953, he formed the University Ballet Theatre, the first ballet company ever incorporated into a university. Mr. C’s contributions to dance also include producing the first full-length version of Coppélia ever to be mounted by an American choreographer and producing the first full-length Swan Lake in the United States. In addition, Mr. C produced the first American Cinderella and his version of Stravinsky’s The Firebird. In 1963, Willam Christensen, in conjuction with Glenn Walker Wallace, founded Ballet West under the name Utah Civic Ballet. Willam served as Artistic Director for Ballet West, and, both under and following his direction, Ballet West has grown to become one of America’s leading ballet companies. After retiring as Artistic Director in 1978, Mr. C founded the Christensen Academy and continued teaching well into his 90s. He served as special artistic advisor for Ballet West’s annual performances of The Nutcracker up until his death on October 14, 2001. Reporting on his death at the age of 99, the San Francisco Chronicle called him “the grandfather of American ballet.”

CHINA BEFORE COMMUNISM

“A Life-Changing Experience.” —Stage Whispers

T

“Shen Yun is extraordinary— Everyone should come see it.”

hroughout history, artists in almost every culture looked to the divine for inspiration. Art was meant to uplift, bringing joy to those who created and experienced it. Today, Shen Yun Performing Arts pays homage to this tradition, weaving the wisdom and virtues of Chinese civilization with ancient legends and modern heroic tales on stage.

—Celeste Holm, Academy Award-winning actress

“The energy, the precision, the beauty... I’m just overwhelmed. It’s so beautiful!” —John Anthony, retired judge

Shen Yun brings to its audiences a whole new experience, revealing a China untainted by communist rule. Be prepared to traverse time and space and be mesmerized by the action, humor, and beauty of five millennia. It’s an experience that will uplift your spirit and touch your heart.

“I’ve never seen anything quite

so beautifully choreographed in my entire life.”

—Shirley Ballas, head judge, Strictly Come Dancing (UK)
