About Ballet West
From Balanchine to Bournonville, Petipa to Tharp, Ballet West boasts a rich and varied repertoire, elegant and versatile artists, and an American style and legacy that is as dynamic, expansive, and as unexpected as the Rocky Mountain region it represents. From its humble beginnings in 1963 as the only professional ballet company between Chicago and the West Coast, Ballet West has grown into one of America’s leading ballet companies. For 60 years, the Salt Lake City-based Company has entertained and excited audiences in Utah and worldwide by presenting the great classical story ballets, including America’s first and longest-running version of The Nutcracker, revivals of rarelyseen historical masterpieces, works by some of the world’s most renowned artists, and new cutting-edge creations by emerging choreographers. The Company also regularly tours both nationally and internationally.
Ballet West was established in Salt Lake City by co-founders Willam F. Christensen, often called the “Godfather of American ballet,” and Utah’s “First Lady of the Arts,” Glenn Walker Wallace. In 1951, Christensen established the first ballet department in an American university at The University of Utah. Over time, this program grew into the Utah Civic Ballet, Ballet West’s first incarnation. Prior to that, along with his brothers, Lew and Harold, Christensen made history by establishing the oldest full-ballet company in the western United States, the San Francisco Ballet.
Since its inception, Ballet West has had five artistic directors, who have each helped build the Company’s unique and expansive profile – its founder, Willam Christensen, Bruce Marks, John Hart CBE, Jonas Kåge, and for the past 16 years, Adam Sklute, who has overseen the artistic product for the longest sustained growth of the Company since its founding. Ballet West continues to grow and evolve with 38 company members, 14 second company members, a thriving Academy, and one of the world’s largest ballet-based Education and Outreach programs, reaching over 100,000 children and adults throughout Utah and the Intermountain Region every year.
The Frederick Quinney Lawson Ballet West (BW) Academy builds future ballet and dance artists and audiences by providing training in classical ballet, flamenco, character, contemporary, hip-hop, and theatrical dance training. The BW Academy has over 1,000 students between its four campuses, Salt Lake City, Trolley Corners, Park City, and Utah County. With newlyrenovated student housing, the BW Academy is home to local, national, and international ballet students, with more than 50% of BW Academy students joining Ballet West.
With this eclectic and ever-expanding outlook, Ballet West is truly an American pioneer in dance. By honoring the history and traditions of our great artform, while constantly moving forward with new and untried concepts, we continue to keep ballet in Utah and the world alive and thriving into the 21st Century and beyond.

From the Artistic Director
Welcome to the 80th anniversary of Ballet West founder Willam Christensen’s renowned and magical ballet, The Nutcracker - America’s first full-length Nutcracker. Mr. C’s production paved the way for countless versions of this beloved holiday classic throughout the country (and the world). It is not only a local treasure; Mr. C’s Nutcracker is now an official Living Landmark for the state of Utah –perhaps the first of its kind in that respect as well.
On Christmas Eve of 1944 in San Francisco, Mr. C gave American audiences their first full production of this now national phenomenon. When he moved back to Utah, Mr. C brought his Nutcracker with him and it has been performed consistently here ever since. Now, around the country, Nutcracker productions, both professional and student, ranging from classical to modern, to hip-hop, in both fulllength or abbreviated forms, have become an American holiday tradition. Notably, Ballet West continues to perform Mr. C’s version to this day, making it perhaps the longestrunning Nutcracker production in the world.
So, what is the great appeal of The Nutcracker, particularly here in America? Why is Mr. C’s production so enduring?
The Nutcracker first premiered in 1892 in St. Petersburg, Russia, featuring a score by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky and choreography by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov. Despite its popularity today, the ballet was not an immediate success. Petipa wrote the libretto himself, which he based on the Alexandre Dumas adaptation of E.T.A. Hoffmann’s story, The Nutcracker and the Mouse King. Critics at the time considered Petipa’s plot to be an over-simplistic rethinking of the cumbersome Hoffmann/Dumas story. Additionally, they did not appreciate the extensive use of children in the leading roles and were bothered by the fact that the principal ballerinas had only short featured opportunities. Tchaikovsky’s score also received mixed reviews initially, but when it was rearranged and shortened to become The Nutcracker Suite, its infinitely hummable music found its way into the hearts of many.
Between 1919 and 1934, multiple revisions of The Nutcracker were presented throughout Europe. During this time, the ballet’s lead roles were given to adults so that Clara, her Prince, and others had more extensive dancing opportunities and greater character development. The Nutcracker was first seen in America in 1940, as a one-act, abridged version choreographed by Alexandra Fedorova for the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo.
An offshoot of Diaghilev’s famed Paris company, the Monte Carlo troupe toured the United States, from large cities to small towns. This Nutcracker Suite became a popular presentation, as Americans had already become familiar with the ballet’s music. (In 1940, Disney incorporated The Nutcracker Suite into a segment of Fantasia, allowing Tchaikovsky’s score to gain household recognition.)
In the early 1940’s, Mr. C made history by founding the first devoted ballet company in America – the San Francisco Ballet. (Prior to that, ballet in the United States was seen only as a “side-show,” and often connected to opera companies.) Mr. C presented America’s first productions of Swan Lake (1939) and Coppélia (1940) before beginning work on his fulllength production of The Nutcracker.
Mr. C likely had seen the abridged production by the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo; in fact, that company’s leading ballerina and main choreographer at the time were none other than Alexandra Danilova and George Balanchine, respectively. As children, both had been a part of the full-length Nutcracker back in St. Petersburg, Russia. Now, decades later, the two Ballet Russe alumni advised Mr. C on details about the story, the breakdown of scenes, casting, and more. As the legend goes, on one such visit, the three had been talking into all hours of the night when the ever-elegant Danilova kicked off her shoes to show Mr. C some
From the Artistic Director
steps. However, Balanchine intervened, saying, “Oh, no, Choura [the traditional Russian diminutive for Alexandra], he must find his own way.”
…And find his way he did. Taking what he had learned from Balanchine and Danilova, along with his own research, vision, and ingenuity, Mr. C created a Nutcracker that is both faithful to the original concept and lively in a uniquely American way.
First, Mr. C gave back all the leading roles to children. Perhaps this was out of practical need – amidst World War II, he may not have had enough trained adult dancers to fill the multitude of roles originally created for children. However, by reinstating so many children into the production, he brilliantly created not just a charming family show, but also a built-in audience for it as parents, grandparents, siblings, and whole families would come to see their relative perform on a major stage in a professional production.
Mr. C, along with his brothers and their wives, began his career in Vaudeville and he therefore understood how the second act of The Nutcracker, with its series of vignettes, or divertissements, could also play like a Vaudeville show. He insisted that the battle scene in the first act be funny, almost like a cartoon, and he kept the proceedings throughout moving along. This, in my opinion, is part of the ballet’s appeal.
The Nutcracker became the perfect vehicle for introducing a wider American audience to the art form of ballet. George Balanchine choreographed his own version in 1954 and, by the late 1960’s, The Nutcracker had become the literal bread and butter for most companies. Some choreographers chose to have the leading roles played by adults, for a deeper, darker psychological exploration of the story, but most chose to go in the direction of Mr. C’s model for pure family entertainment.
In the early 1950’s, Mr. C first presented his Nutcracker in Salt Lake City, with the Utah Civic Ballet (which would later become Ballet West). While Mr. C himself tinkered with his original work over the years, changing sets and costumes four times and even authorizing his successors to modify aspects of the choreography, he never lost sight of what made his ballet magical.
Since 2007, it has been my honor to steward Mr. C’s beloved production to its 80th anniversary and further into the 21st century. Thanks to you, our wonderful patrons, his pioneering efforts to create a uniquely American version of The Nutcracker have kept it alive and vibrant as we pass it on, with love, from generation to generation.
From all of us at Ballet West, we wish you the happiest of holidays!

Sponsored By Peggy Bergmann
Since 2007, Adam Sklute has expanded Ballet West’s outlook, repertoire, and visibility with exciting Company and world premieres, increased touring, heightened public exposure, and greater focus on the Ballet West Academy. He began his career with The Joffrey Ballet, rising through the ranks from dancer to Associate Director. His stewardship of Ballet West has been marked by both financial growth and elevated artistry, and was the subject of The CW Network’s docu-drama, Breaking Pointe, which aired for two seasons. From September 2016 to October 2017, Sklute took on the dual position of CEO and Artistic Director, overseeing both administrative and artistic operations of Ballet West. An internationally sought-after teacher and adjudicator, Sklute has received numerous awards, including Utah’s Enlightened 50 (2014), The Bronze Minuteman Award for Outstanding Service to Utah and The Nation (2015), and Utah Diversity Connection’s Business Award for outstanding commitment to diversity initiatives. Most recently, Sklute was included in Deseret Magazine’s 25 Changemakers of the West for his efforts to build greater equity and inclusion in classical ballet.
From the Executive Director
Welcome to Willam Christensen’s The Nutcracker! In addition to enjoying a magical and entertaining performance that celebrates the beauty of the holiday season, you are also attending an historic event. This December marks the 80th anniversary of Mr. C’s beloved production, which is America’s first full-length Nutcracker and the longest running Nutcracker in America, and possibly the world. Mr. C had no idea he was starting a holiday tradition that has become the bread and butter of dance companies nationwide!
For Mr. C, it was all about the children. This production has more than 300 children in several casts performing throughout the run. Our Nutcracker introduces the joy and beauty of ballet to countless families each year, creating new generations of dance patrons. For the dancers, The Nutcracker provides them with opportunities to explore featured roles for the first time, helping them grow as artists. Our lengthy performance run of 25 performances over three- and one-half weeks provides an economic boost to the greater Salt Lake region. In addition to purchasing tickets and merchandise, patrons will often make a day or evening of their time downtown by adding lunch or dinner to their trip while shopping at nearby shops and patronizing the many parking garages downtown. Ballet West is proud to be an integral part of the holiday hustle and bustle downtown and the revenue The Nutcracker provides to local, county, and state governments.
Last season, Nutcracker revenue exceeded $2.8 million, double that of 10 years ago! Driving this trend, I believe, is families’ desire to return to simpler, more traditional holiday fare. Furthermore, the investment in new sets and costumes in 2017, thanks to a generous lead gift from the George S. and Delores Doré Eccles Foundation spurred renewed public interest in this timeless holiday classic.
Whether this marks your first, or 41st Nutcracker, we are delighted to have you join us for America’s first Nutcracker, and the first Living Historic Landmark designated by the State of Utah this year. Nothing gets us more in the mood for the holidays than this sparkling production, exquisitely danced and with Tchaikovsky’s iconic score performed by the incredible Ballet West Orchestra.
Thank you for being with us, for supporting this national treasure, and for being part of Ballet West’s tremendous legacy.
Warm wishes to you and your family this holiday season,
Michael Scolamiero
The Elizabeth Solomon Executive Director Chair
Michael Scolamiero joined Ballet West after an extensive international search led by Michael Kaiser, President Emeritus of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Since that time, Scolamiero has played a key role in transforming the organization’s financial health, eliminating operating deficits and building a cash reserve. With a strong balance sheet, Ballet West no longer requires external financing to meet cash needs and is growing its endowment. Under his direction, Ballet West has purchased and operates residential housing in downtown Salt Lake City for students at the Frederick Quinney Lawson Ballet West Academy.

THE NUTCRACKER begins at the Stahlbaum home on Christmas Eve. Mr. and Mrs. Stahlbaum and their children, Clara and Fritz, are busy preparing for the evening festivities. The guests arrive, including Clara’s godfather, Dr. Drosselmeyer. Dr. Drosselmeyer has fashioned a special gift for Clara—a Nutcracker designed in the form of a small soldier. Clara falls in love with her Nutcracker at once.
That night, Clara is unable to sleep without one more look at her beloved Nutcracker. She tiptoes back into the living room and cradles it once more before falling asleep. She is not sure whether she is dreaming, but before her eyes are huge mice playing in front of the Christmas tree that has grown to a tremendous size. The Nutcracker fights with the Mouse King and, in the heat of the battle, Clara takes off her slipper and throws it at the Mouse King. While he is distracted, the Nutcracker stabs him with his saber.
After the battle, the Nutcracker is magically transformed into a handsome prince and, grateful to Clara for saving his life, invites her to accompany him on a journey to the fabled Kingdom of the Sugar Plum Fairy. En route, they pass through the exquisite land of the Snow Queen and King.
Act II begins in the land of the Sugar Plum Fairy, where Clara is celebrated by dances from around the world, as well as the beloved Mother Buffoon with her many children who appear from under her gigantic skirt. Finally, Clara is whisked away with her prince in a sleigh, waving goodbye to the Sugar Plum Fairy and her international magical kingdom.

JARED OAKS
Music Director
Jared Oaks, one of the leading young ballet conductors in the United States, is Music Director of Ballet West. Since joining the company in 2008, Jared has maintained a rigorous conducting schedule, in addition to playing for rehearsals and classes. He has conducted performances for Houston Ballet and The Sarasota Ballet, and he has worked with the Anchorage Symphony Orchestra, the Chicago Sinfonietta, the Kennedy Center Opera House Orchestra, among others.
Jared’s numerous compositions include an oratorio about Joan of Arc, with poems by Suzanne Lundquist, and chamber ballets for Ballet West, Charlotte Ballet, and Mid-Columbia Ballet. Jared is also a fellow of the American-Scandinavian Foundation and co-founder of the Composer Discovery Initiative.
GABRIEL GORDON
Ballet West Guest Conductor
Gabriel Gordon has enjoyed a career conducting across the United States, Australia, and Europe. Mr. Gordon has conducted the Santa Fe Symphony, the Atlanta Symphony, and at Santa Fe Opera. He placed second in the Denver Philharmonic International Conducting Competition, and won the International Conductor’s Workshop and Competition in Atlanta. In 2001, Gabriel produced and conducted “The Concert for Humanity” in reaction to the events of 9/11 with his ensemble The Chamber Orchestra at Tower Hill. The performance of Beethoven’s 9th Symphony raised $30,000 for the Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund.
Since 2019, Gabriel has served as a cover and guest conductor for Ballet West conducting performances of The Nutcracker, Rodeo, Les Noces, Dracula, and Stars and Stripes. Gabriel made his debut with Oklahoma City Ballet with their production of Jorden Morris’s Peter Pan to wide acclaim. He will also make his Gwinnett Symphony debut as the winner of The International Conductor’s Workshop and Competition. Gabriel conducts The New American Philharmonic and is a frequent guest conductor with Chamber Orchestra Ogden and The Nova Chamber series. Gabriel is also the Orchestra Director at Syracuse Arts Academy, and is a board member on The Davis Arts Council.
AUBREY WOODS Concertmaster
Aubrey Woods’ rise as a professional violinist vividly demonstrates the versatility that is the sine qua non for twenty-first century musicians. Her artistic leadership and excellence as concertmaster for Ballet West are consistently on display at the Capitol, Rose Wagner, and Eccles theatres in Salt Lake City. She frequently performs with the Utah Symphony Orchestra. She appeared for several years with the Orchestra at Temple Square in weekly worldwide broadcasts and on recordings with the Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square and notable soloists, including Bryn Terfel and Renée Fleming. Aubrey is equally in demand as a studio recording artist for movies, television, and in backing tracks for many popular artists.
Her performances as a chamber musician include appearances with NOVA, Intermezzo, the Park City Chamber Music Series and, on the Baroque violin, with New York Baroque Incorporated, the Sebastians, and Musica Angelica. She may often be heard in company with her husband, Alexander Woods, as the duo Woodsmith. In her free time, Aubrey loves making sourdough bread and spending time with her husband and their five kids.

Willam F. Christensen
Choreographer, The Nutcracker
Recognized as one of the leading pioneers in American dance, Willam Christensen, known affectionately as “Mr. C,” played a key role in the artistic contributions to Utah and to the United States. Along with brothers Lew and Harold, Willam began his career with dance lessons from his uncle at the Christensen Academy in Brigham City, Utah. Together, the brothers went on to a professional career in Vaudeville, and then in 1937, established the oldest ballet company in the United States, the San Francisco Ballet. While with the San Francisco Ballet, Mr. C choreographed the first full-length version of The Nutcracker ever performed in the United States. Christensen moved his family to Utah to nurse his wife’s ill health. In 1951, he founded the first ballet department at an American university, the University of Utah. Shortly thereafter, in 1953, he formed the University Ballet Theatre, the first ballet company ever incorporated into a university.
Mr. C’s contributions to dance also include producing the first full-length version of Coppélia ever to be mounted by an American choreographer and producing the first fulllength Swan Lake in the United States. In addition, Mr. C produced the first American Cinderella and his version of Stravinsky’s The Firebird.
In 1963, Willam Christensen, in conjuction with Glenn Walker Wallace, founded Ballet West under the name Utah Civic Ballet. Willam served as Artistic Director for Ballet West, and, both under and following his direction, Ballet West has grown to become one of America’s leading ballet companies.
After retiring as Artistic Director in 1978, Mr. C founded the Christensen Academy and continued teaching well into his 90s. He served as special artistic advisor for Ballet West’s annual performances of The Nutcracker up until his death on October 14, 2001. Reporting on his death at the age of 99, the San Francisco Chronicle called him “the grandfather of American ballet.”
Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky
Composer, The Nutcracker
Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840-1893) studied at the Conservatory in St. Petersburg, where George Balanchine later studied piano in addition to his studies in dance. Tchaikovsky is one of the most popular and influential of all Romantic composers. His work is expressive, melodic, and grand in scale, with rich orchestrations. His output was prodigious and included chamber works, symphonies, and concerti for various instruments, as well as operas and works for the piano. His creations for ballet, composed in close partnership with Marius Petipa, include Swan Lake, The Nutcracker, and The Sleeping Beauty.
