10 BALLET WEST

About Ballet West

From Balanchine to Bournonville, and Petipa to Tharp, Ballet West boasts a rich and varied repertoire, elegant and versatile artists, and an American style and legacy that is as dynamic, expansive, and unexpected as the Rocky Mountain region it represents. Ballet West has toured the world several times over, presenting the very best in American classical ballet.

Ballet West was established in Salt Lake City in 1963. Willam F. Christensen was the company’s first artistic director, co-founding the company together with Utah’s “First Lady of the Arts,” Glenn Walker Wallace. In 1951, Christensen had established the first ballet department in an American university at The University of Utah, and with the tireless assistance of Mrs. Enid Cosgriff, this program grew into the Utah Civic Ballet, Ballet West’s first incarnation. But this was not the first ballet company Willam Christensen founded. Along with his brothers, Lew and Harold, Christensen made history by establishing the oldest ballet company in the western United States, the San Francisco Ballet. There, he went on to create the first full-length American productions of Coppélia, Swan Lake, and his evergreen production of The Nutcracker, which remains in Ballet West’s repertoire to this day.

With 36 company members, 16 second company members, and a thriving academy that trains dancers of all ages, many of whom have gone on to professional careers with Ballet West and companies around the world, Ballet West ranks among the top professional ballet companies in America. Since its inception, the Company has had five artistic directors—its founder Willam Christensen, Bruce Marks, John Hart, Jonas Kåge, and currently Adam Sklute, each of whom has helped to build Ballet West’s unique and expansive profile.

For more than 50 years, Willam Christensen and Ballet West have developed and influenced innumerable great artists in the ballet world. Some notable figures include Bart Cook, Finis Jhung, Jay Jolley, Victoria Morgan, Tomm Ruud, Michael Smuin, Richard Tanner, and Kent Stowell.

With an eclectic and ever expanding outlook, Ballet West is truly an American pioneer in the world of dance.

From the Artistic Director

Welcome to The Sleeping Beauty with brand new sets for the first time since Ballet West’s initial production of this great classic in the mid-1980’s.

In so many ways, Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s name is synonymous with ballet. More often than not, when we think of ballet music, his exquisite melodies come to mind. But it is interesting to think that Tchaikovsky actually only composed three ballet scores. His first, Swan Lake in 1876, was initially met with relatively negative reviews. It was considered too melodramatic and unstructured for a ballet. His second ballet, The Sleeping Beauty in 1889, was hailed as a success, both for its elegant orchestrations and its soaring themes, but was long and somewhat unwieldy. Tchaikovsky’s last ballet, The Nutcracker in 1892, was first thought to be too simplistic, underdeveloped, and not profound enough. Sadly, Tchaikovsky did not live long enough to see his now-revered ballet scores become the most enduring music for the art-form; The Nutcracker and Swan Lake perhaps becoming the most popular ballets of all time.

But it’s of The Sleeping Beauty that Tchaikovsky was proudest. Indeed, many consider this score one of the finest of all of his works with its beautifully developed themes and leitmotifs. There is a purity to this score. That beauty and purity translates to the dance originally choreographed by Marius Petipa, that makes it one of the most demanding ballets ever performed. Even in its many adaptations over the years, it still requires absolute clarity, specificity, and control, all while creating believable characters to tell the beloved fairy tale. This is not just from the leads, but from the entire cast of company and students. For all these reasons, The Sleeping Beauty is considered by many in the dance world to be the supreme test for any classical ballet company.

Over the years, Ballet West has presented three different versions of The Sleeping Beauty. In 1986, the company unveiled its first version, originally conceived by the former Artistic Director Bruce Marks, and put on the stage by his successor John Hart CBE, with staging by Denise Schultz and Louis Godfrey. This production brought the elegance and stylistic specificity of the English school of dance and England’s long history with the ballet. In 2000, my predecessor, Jonas Kåge, produced his own version drawing on his broad history with “Beauty,” having danced and directed the work with American Ballet Theatre and around the world.

In 2011, I decided to redo this monumental work, and my goal was to adhere to its many traditions, but bring out the fairy tale magic of the ballet and its emotional heart by distilling the characters’ qualities and emphasizing their archetypal nature. I enlisted our Principal Rehearsal Director Pamela Robinson-Harris to re-choreograph sections of the Prologue and Act 2 and our late Rehearsal Director Mark Goldweber to do the same with Acts 1 & 3. Together, we reinvented Ballet West’s Sleeping Beauty in a way that maintained and honored a broad scope of historical stylistic details but, brought a contemporary energy to the storytelling. For example, the first entrance of the fairies that bless and guard the princess Aurora. In historic versions, they walked on - elegantly escorted by their cavaliers, who were dressed very much like classical ballet princes. In our version the fairies are lifted in uniquely and differently – almost as if they are flying in through the

18 BALLET
WEST

From the Artistic Director

windows. Their cavaliers also look much more elven and magical. We also reenvisioned the evil fairy Carabosse to be as young and beautiful as her sisters – just evil to the core.

I also worked closely with our Director of Costume Production Emeritus, David Heuvel, to reimagine the costumes in a more fanciful way and incorporate many of the different storybook characters from Charles Perrault, who wrote this version of The Sleeping Beauty in the late 1600s. With each successive presentation over my fifteen-year tenure, we have continued to modify the overall look of the costuming to further individualize the cast.

Now, I am thrilled to introduce a new take on the sets by renowned set designer Alain Vaes for the Prologue, Act 1, and Act 3. He ingeniously moves us from the late 17th century courts of Aurora’s birth and her sixteenth birthday to 100 years later when she is awakened by the kiss of true love and celebrates her wedding to the prince. His vibrant vision for the sets is designed to work with Heuvel’s magical costumes to create a dynamic new look for this beloved classic.

The Sleeping Beauty is a ballet with great history. It is also a fairytale. Every time we revive it, I find more and more layers to bring out. Each new revival gives us an opportunity to further distill subtle aspects of technique that enhance the characters, with the ultimate goal of creating an exciting and nuanced story that is recognizable and surprising at the same time. With the exciting addition of these new sets, we continue to expand on this majestic work, while honoring its legacy. As always, it is with deep gratitude to our donors and patrons for your generosity. Your gifts, both large and small, help to make this art form eternal. My sincere thank you for allowing us to tell timeless stories, to delight young and old, and to dream of a bright future.

Since 2007, Adam Sklute has expanded Ballet West’s outlook, repertoire, and visibility with exciting Company and world premieres, increased touring, heightened public exposure, and greater focus on the Ballet West Academy. He began his career with The Joffrey Ballet, rising through the ranks from dancer to Associate Director. His stewardship of Ballet West has been marked by both financial growth and elevated artistry, and was the subject of The CW Network’s docu-drama, Breaking Pointe, which aired for two seasons. From September 2016 to October 2017, Sklute took on the dual position of CEO and Artistic Director, overseeing both administrative and artistic operations of Ballet West. An internationally sought-after teacher and adjudicator, Sklute has received numerous awards, including Utah’s Enlightened 50 (2014), The Bronze Minuteman Award for Outstanding Service to Utah and The Nation (2015), and Utah Diversity Connection’s Business Award for outstanding commitment to diversity initiatives. Most recently, Sklute was included in Deseret Magazine’s 25 Changemakers of the West for his efforts to build greater equity and inclusion in classical ballet.

19 22–23 SEASON

From the Executive Director

My first encounter with The Sleeping Beauty fairytale was as a child watching the seminal Walt Disney film that used Tchaikovsky’s magnificent score and spectacular groundbreaking animation. The combination of the plot and music captivated me, and when I learned as an adult the same plot was used to create a ballet, I was thrilled. It’s been a favorite of mine ever since, one that brings back fond childhood memories.

Ballet West’s revival of The Sleeping Beauty is exciting on many levels. Some of the principal roles are danced for the first time by our next generation of dancers, who bring their own unique artistry to the stage, highlighting the incredible talent and versatility of Ballet West. Thanks to an extraordinarily generous lead gift from John and Andrea Miller and additional support from the George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Foundation, the production also features new sets designed by renowned French artist and painter Alain Vaes. The Sleeping Beauty also features beautifully handcrafted wigs created by our own Yancey Quick, Ballet West’s Wig Master and Footwear Coordinator. I promise you will find the entire performance visually captivating and replete with superb choreography and such a magnificent score that you may find yourself humming melodies as you exit the theater.

Our winter season follows one of the most successful runs of Willam Christensen’s The Nutcracker in the past 15 years. More than 37,000 people attended the production at the Capitol Theatre, with an average attendance of 1,555 per show and capacity exceeding 93%! Revenue, which was just shy of $2.7 million, has never been higher in the Company’s history. We were honored to have Governor Cox issue a proclamation that was presented on stage at the Christmas Eve performance designating December 24th Ballet West Nutcracker Day in Utah, a tribute to America’s first and longest-running Nutcracker, performed exclusively by Ballet West. The magic of this holiday classic remains strong as ever in its 78th year!

20 BALLET
WEST

From the Executive Director

All of us at Ballet West are honored to have such incredible support for our Company among all ages and communities throughout Utah and neighboring states. Stronger than ever, your beloved Ballet West is well positioned to bring you the very best in dance, along with superior training and one of the largest outreach programs in the United States. We are proud of what we do and we couldn’t do it without you.

Enjoy the show!

Warm wishes,

Michael Scolamiero joined Ballet West in 2017 after an extensive international search led by Michael Kaiser, President Emeritus of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Mr. Scolamiero previously served as Executive Director of Miami City Ballet for three years, during which time the organization achieved a significant reduction in debt, as well as robust growth in ticket revenue, contributions, and touring income. Prior to Miami City Ballet, Mr. Scolamiero was Pennsylvania Ballet’s Executive Director for 17 years, the longest tenure in the Company’s history and among the longest of any leader of a major ballet company. During his tenure, Mr. Scolamiero led the organization’s first capital campaign that raised $11.9 million (against a $10 million goal) to build an endowment and fund repertoire expansion. At Ballet West, Mr. Scolamiero is set to implement a newly-completed strategic plan and excited to guide a growing and robust Company.

PROLOGUE

The Christening

The King and Queen have invited all the Fairies of the land to the christening of their daughter, the Princess Aurora. Each fairy presents her gift to the newborn Princess, imbuing her with the qualities of Kindness, Joy, Beauty, and Temperament. Suddenly the proceedings are interrupted by Carabosse, the Fairy of Jealousy. She is in a rage because the Major Domo of the Court, Catalabutte, neglected to invite her. That oversight is costly as Carabosse casts an evil spell on Aurora: one day, when she least suspects it, the Princess will prick her finger on a spindle and die. The entire court is in despair until the Lilac Fairy, the Fairy of Wisdom, steps forward to bestow her gift. Although she cannot counteract the curse, she can mollify it by declaring that instead of dying, the Princess Aurora will fall into a deep slumber from which she can be awakened only by the kiss of true love.

ACT I

The Spell

Three old women are busy creating a gift for Princess Aurora’s sixteenth birthday. One woman sits at a spinning wheel, flanked by another who holds the thread, while another knits furiously. The peasant children arrive with garlands and tokens of appreciation. Their festivities are interrupted when two guards arrest the old crone as a result of the years-old ban with spinning on penalty of death. The King and Queen arrive just as the guards are about to put the women to death, but because it’s a joyous occasion, the King pardons the old women of their transgressions. Princes from the four corners of the earth have come to win Aurora’s hand in marriage, and the young princess revels in their adulation. As the princess dances with joy, one of the crones approaches Aurora and presents her with a strange gift. Enraptured, Aurora shows the unique present to her parents, who recognize it as a spindle they have banned. They try to urge her to drop the spindle - but it’s too late! Aurora pricks her finger and everyone is aghast as Aurora falls lifeless to the ground. The crone reveals herself as Carabosse and vanishes in triumph. The Lilac Fairy appears and casts her spell of sleep over Aurora, the King and Queen, and all the people in the land. The palace is covered by a forest until the promised awakening.

Intermission ACT II The Vision

It is a hundred years later, and Prince Desire is leading a hunting party through the woods. Bored with his courtly duties, he entertains himself with flirtatious diversions. The prince dismisses his assistants to meditate on his longing for ideal love. Fairies appear, led by the Lilac Fairy, and show him a vision of Princess Aurora. Enthralled, he begs the Fairies to lead him to this beautiful vision and together they travel through challenging landscapes until they reach the hidden castle. Carabosse and her minions have been jealously guarding the castle and attempt to stop anyone from coming near, but her evil magic is overpowered by the wisdom of the Lilac Fairy. Prince Desire awakens Princess Aurora with a kiss, breaking the spell and causing the defeated Carabosse to disappear forever.

Frederick Quinney Lawson Ballet West Academy

The Frederick Quinney Lawson Ballet West Academy, the official school of Ballet West, is Utah’s premier source of dance training, providing the highest caliber of ballet instruction to professionally-bound students, as well as to those who simply wish to enjoy this beautiful and athletic art form. Academy students experience a structured curriculum offered in a nurturing, respectful, and positive environment, celebrating and exploring each student’s individual strengths and abilities. The Ballet West Academy and its distinguished faculty are led by Evelyn Cisneros-Legate, an ever-growing and dynamic leader in the international field of dance. Pre-professional students are given the unique opportunity to be observed regularly and take classes with Ballet West Artistic Director, Adam Sklute, and are considered for future positions with Ballet West. Avocational students build strength, coordination, and confidence through focused and joyous top-level dance education.

Classes begin at age three and are available at four locations including: Salt Lake City (two locations), Utah County and Park City.
