From the Artistic Director Welcome to the world premiere of our new Family Classics ballet, Snow White. The Ballet West Family Classics series provides a way for children and their families to enjoy ballet and learn how to appreciate its unique combination of music, movement, and storytelling. The series is also designed to create a performance platform for our world-class second company and students. In approximately 90 minutes, your entire family will be entertained by the dancers of Ballet West II and the students of the Frederick Quinney Lawson Ballet West Academy. The performance is also accompanied by a narration that tells the tale while the dancers dance the roles. Our production of Snow White is based on the classic fairy tale as told by the Brothers Grimm, and its score is an arrangement of various pieces by composers Edvard Grieg and Johann Strauss II. The ballet is choreographed and overseen by Ballet West’s Principal Ballet Master, Pamela Robinson Harris, who also wrote the libretto and arranged the music. Her assistant choreographer for this production is Ballet West First Soloist Christopher Sellars. The whimsical costumes were designed by Director of Costume Production David Heuvel and the sets by Thomas George. Overall, Snow White offers a unique blend of beauty, charm, and humor, especially thanks to the marvelous cast of Ballet West Academy students, under the supervision of Student Ballet Master Heather Thackeray, and Ballet West II, our “Farm Team,” under the direction of Calvin Kitten. Combining storytelling, magic, comedy, and the sheer beauty and excitement of dance, Snow White is a perfect ballet for children and adults from all walks of life. In these fast-paced times, this ballet is a wonderful opportunity for you and your family to slow down for a short while and experience theater, art, music, and togetherness. Thank you for joining us. We hope you enjoy.
Adam Sklute Since 2007, Adam Sklute has expanded Ballet West’s outlook, repertoire, and visibility with exciting Company and world premieres, increased touring, heightened public exposure, and greater focus on the Ballet West Academy. He began his career with The Joffrey Ballet, rising through the ranks from dancer to Associate Director. His stewardship of Ballet West has been marked by both financial growth and elevated artistry, and was the subject of The CW Network’s docu-drama, Breaking Pointe, which aired for two seasons. From September 2016 to October 2017, Sklute took on the dual position of CEO and Artistic Director overseeing both administrative and artistic operations of Ballet West. An internationally sought after teacher and adjudicator, Sklute has received numerous awards, including Utah’s Enlightened 50 (2014), The Bronze Minuteman Award for Outstanding Service to Utah and The Nation (2015), and most recently Utah Diversity Connection’s Business Award for outstanding commitment to diversity initiatives.

From the Executive Director I am delighted you have joined us for the world premiere of Snow White, Ballet West’s fourth production in our Family Classics Series. This is an exciting and ambitious production where Ballet West II and students of the Frederick Quinney Lawson Ballet West Academy have the opportunity to perform on the grand Capitol Theatre stage. The Family Classics Series, including Snow White, are a concise one-hour and fifteen minutes and feature guided narration, enabling the youngest audience members to fully understand the drama and beauty on stage. The stars of this show are the dancers of Ballet West II, a troupe that has recently grown into a 16-member touring ensemble. These dancers, among the best of Utah and beyond, are young and talented individuals from Brazil, Canada, Switzerland, and a dozen points in between—each of them choosing Salt Lake City as their professional home. For Ballet West II, dance is no longer an avocation, but a career. They are in the studios from 10am to nearly 7pm, five days a week. When they are not rehearsing for Snow White, or performing with the main company, they are Ballet West ambassadors performing in community centers, schools, and churches. As they hone their talent, they spread the joy of dance to those who may not have the means or ability to see ballet in a traditional theater. Sincerely,
Michael Scolamiero
Michael Scolamiero joined Ballet West in 2017 after an extensive international search led by Michael Kaiser, President Emeritus of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Mr. Scolamiero previously served as Executive Director of Miami City Ballet for three years, during which time the organization achieved a significant reduction in debt, as well as robust growth in ticket revenue, contributions, and touring income. Prior to Miami City Ballet, Mr. Scolamiero was Pennsylvania Ballet’s Executive Director for 17 years, the longest tenure in the Company’s history and among the longest of any leader of a major ballet company. During his tenure, Mr. Scolamiero led the organization’s first capital campaign that raised $11.9 million (against a $10 million goal) to build an endowment and fund repertoire expansion. At Ballet West, Mr. Scolamiero is set to implement a newly completed strategic plan and excited to guide a growing and robust Company.

Synopsis In a far-away land, a good king and queen dream of having a child. After a long wait, they are blessed with a baby girl, whom they name Snow White. Shortly after Snow White’s birth, the good queen dies. The king remarries, but this time to a proud and vain queen who values her beauty above all else. Snow White grows older and lovelier and, on her sixteenth birthday, meets a handsome prince. The vain queen begins to fear that Snow White’s beauty will surpass her own. She orders her huntsman to take Snow White into the forest and kill her. But the huntsman spares her life, and Snow White finds refuge in the comfort of the forest animals, who lead her to the cozy cottage of seven friendly dwarfs. The vain queen learns from her magic mirror that Snow White is still alive, and forms a new plan to kill the young girl. Disguised as a peddler, the vain queen visits the dwarfs’ cottage and tempts Snow White with a poisoned apple. Snow White cannot resist, and falls to the ground after one bite. The dwarfs return home from their mines to find Snow White’s body, and place her in a glass coffin. Then one day, the handsome prince Snow White met on her 16th birthday finds the dwarfs’ cottage while traveling through the forest. With true love’s kiss, he awakens Snow White from the poisoned apple’s spell. Snow White and the prince return to the kingdom together and live happily ever after.
